8. Medical Students' Satisfaction and Academic Performance with Problem-Based Learning in Practice-Based Exercises for Epidemiology and Health Demographics

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) on university students' satisfaction with and academic performance in a course on epidemiology and social and demographic health. The participants in this interventional study were 529 students (272 in the intervention group and 257 in the control group) enrolled in a medical degree programme during the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 in Spain. The intervention consisted of the use of a list of problems designed for small-group study in one of the practical sessions (Interpretation of Epidemiological Parameters). We compared students' satisfaction and performance after either PBL or conventional teaching methods. Students' satisfaction and academic performance were significantly better in the PBL group than in the traditional-learning group. Satisfaction with teaching was the main predictor of academic performance. After adjustment for level of satisfaction, the difference between groups in academic performance disappeared.

9. Evaluation of gluten-free layer cake quality made with okara flour

Abstract

In order to add value and develop alternatives for the use of okara, a by-product from the soy processing, this study examined the incorporation of 10 and 20% okara flour (OF) and its particle sizes effects (200, 500 and 1000 µm) on the characteristics of gluten-free layer cakes. Batter density and viscosity, cake characteristics (weight loss, specific volume, texture and color) and consumer acceptability were studied. By increasing the OF content batter density and viscosity increased. These changes resulted in a smaller specific volume of cakes with the greatest level substitution by OF. Textural properties of the samples revealed that cake hardness increased, while springiness and cohesiveness decreased in cakes with OF. Crust color of cakes enriched with OF were lighter, less reddish and less yellowish, while crumb color was not affected by the presence of OF. Cakes with 10%OF showed to have the highest acceptability. It was demonstrated that it is possible to make gluten-free layer cake, using OF as partial substitution of rice flour, with good physical characteristics similar texture and acceptability to the control cake.

Abstract

Milk quotas were introduced in the former European Economic Community in 1984 as a mechanism to prevent overproduction of milk because of support measures for the dairy sector. The quotas system was removed on 1 April 2015. In order to analyse the possible impact of this decision to remove the milk quotas system on dairy farms in Andalusia (Spain), a comparison was made of a time series of the data in the databases of the public administrations. The variables used were dairy production per cow and year, the number of cows per farm and dairy production per farm and year. The period 2010-2019 was considered, establishing two strata: 2010-2014 (period with milk quotas in force) and 2015-2019 (post quotas period). From 2010 to 2019, the number of dairy cattle farms in Andalusia decreased by 29.8 %, milk production increased by 25 % and the average farm size increased by 23 %. 11. Using flower strips to promote green lacewings to control cabbage insect pests

Abstract

Habitat management improves biological control by increasing the abundance and fitness of natural enemies through the provision of floral resources along field edges or between crops. Among the natural enemies reliant on flower resources, green lacewings often stand out due to their abundance, predation capacity and polyphagy. We evaluated the impact of tailored flower strips on the enhancement of natural enemies, especially green lacewings, in three organic cabbage (Brassica oleracea) farms in Southern Sweden. Insects were sampled from the flower strips, and cabbage pests and predators were visually recorded in the crop. In a laboratory assay, the pollen feeding preferences of Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens, 1836) were evaluated in a dual-choice test. The pollen consumed by the Chrysopidae was extracted from laboratory and field specimens, then quantified and identified. Flower strips were found to attract predators and parasitoids, whose abundance increased as flowers bloomed. Cabbage plants next to the flower strips showed lower pest infestation as compared to cabbage plant control, although no significant differences were observed in the number of predators. Chrysopidae used flower strips as feeding, reproduction and shelter sites and mainly consumed pollen from Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth. Under laboratory conditions, C. carnea showed a preference for P. tanacetifolia and Coriandrum sativum L. pollen over Borago officinalis L. and Fagopyrum esculentum Moench. We show that tailored flower strips could be an efficient tool for enhancing beneficial arthropods and should be considered in integrated pest management for cabbage crops.

17. Perennial flower strips for pest control in organic apple orchards

Abstract

Orchards often have low diversity of plant species, which limits the promotion of natural enemies to combat the important apple pests Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini) and Cydia pomonella (L.). We developed perennial, multifunctional flower strips with native plant species and trialed these in organic apple orchards in seven European countries. On average 73.7% of the sown plant species were established and plant diversity of flower strips was on average 43% higher than the spontaneous orchard vegetation. Intensive mulching of flower strips affected the plant community: species richness and ground cover by forbs and plants, which especially promote functional agrobiodiversity, decreased significantly. Visual assessments over two years revealed a higher number of natural enemies on plant parts, and specifically in D. plantaginea colonies, on trees in flower strip plots than on trees in control plots with standard orchard vegetation. Trees in the flower strip plots recorded a slower D. plantaginea population increase as compared with control plots, resulting in reduced fruit damage after the second fruit drop. Likewise, from 2016–2017, the number of preadult codling moths decreased more in the flower strip plots as compared to the control plots resulting in reduced fruit damage. Our study shows on a wide continental scale that the implementation of perennial flower strips in the alleyways between apple tree rows boosts natural enemies and reduces key apple pests and the associated fruit damage. This supports the role of functional agrobiodiversity as a way to potentially reduce insecticide use in orchards and thus further promote conservation of agrobiodiversity. Abstract

Das Ziel des Projektes EcoOrchard ist die praxisnahe Entwicklung geeigneter Strategien und Maßnahmen zur Förderung der funktionellen Agro-Biodiversität im ökologischen Apfelanbau. An dem Projekt sind neun europäische Länder beteiligt und es wird im Rahmen des CoreOrganic Plus-Programmes bis Ende 2017 gefördert. 2015 wurden in sieben Ländern (Schweden, Dänemark, Belgien, Deutschland, Polen, Schweiz, Italien) auf ökologisch bewirtschafteten Obstbetrieben Freilandversuche zur Praxiseignung mehrjähriger, standortangepasster Blühstreifen in den Fahrgassen angelegt. Die verwendete Blühmischung enthielt über 25 verschiedene krautige Pflanzen, die mehrjährig und besonders mulchresistent sind. Die Auswahl der Pflanzen erfolgte auch bezüglich ihrer Nutzbarkeit als Nektar- und Pollenlieferanten für Nützlinge, wie z.B. Schwebfliegen und Parasitoide. Diese sollen in die Reihen gelockt und dort etabliert werden, um das Auftreten von Hauptschaderregern wie der Mehligen Apfelblattlaus (Dysaphis plantaginea) und des Apfelwicklers (Cydia pomonella) zu minimieren. Begleitend zu diesen Versuchen wird das Themenportal "EBIO-Network" (European Biodiversity Orchards Network) entwickelt. Es soll Informationen zur Bedeutung, Erhaltung und Schaffung funktioneller Biodiversität im Kernobstanbau und ist als interaktives Kommunikationsinstrument zwischen den Akteuren der europäischen Obstproduktion auf verschiedenen Ebenen (Praxis, Wissenschaft, Beratung) gedacht. Die website ist im internet-Angebot des Julius Kühn-Instituts zu finden (http://ebionetwork.julius-kuehn.de). 24. Interactions Between the Nematode Heterorhabditis amazonensisJPM4 and the Predator Macrolophus basicornis: Two Natural Enemies of Tuta absolutaNative to South America

Abstract

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and predatory mirids are among the most effective natural enemies for the control of Tuta absoluta, a key pest of tomato worldwide. In the case of South America, the native EPN Heterorhabditis amazonensisand the predator Macrolophus basicornis(Stal) coexist in tomato. The intraguild interactions of two ENPs, H. amazonensisJPM4 and the widely used Steinernema carpocapsae, with the predator M. basicornis, were studied in laboratory setups with the objective of evaluating the potential interactions between them. We hypothesized that the two natural enemies do not interact negatively. The first nymphal stage of the predator was not affected when exposed to tomato leaves directly sprayed with both EPNs, which we attributed to the small size of its stylet. Individuals treated with H. amazonensisJPM4 had low mortality rates in all developmental stages with a maximum of 1.3%. Mortality was higher when the predator was exposed to S. carpocapsae(28% for adults) and correlated positively with increasing developmental stages. In prey choice tests between larvae infected with H. amazonensisand uninfected larvae, M. basicornisfed indistinctively showing no clear preference. When presented with choice larvae infected with S. carpocapsae, the consumption of healthy larvae was higher. In a no-choice prey acceptance experiment, M. basicornispreyed on both healthy and infected larvae with no difference in larvae consumed. Predators that had fed from infected larvae did not exhibit signs of nematode infection and survived. Our results indicate that the South American native H. amazonensisJPM4 and M. basicornisdo not show a negative interaction and are promising candidates for combined use in T. absolutabiological control.

Abstract

The European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis (Heteroptera: Miridae), inflicts serious damage to glasshouse crops, including cucumber, in which it causes distorted foliage, dead growing points and malformed fruits. In a research involving commercial growers, we tested the possibility of using a trap crop to control L. rugulipennis. We screened the attraction of sunflower and lucerne as trap crops using an olfactometer. Adults (females and males) were more attracted to the odour of either flowering sunflower or lucerne than flowering cucumber. In a glasshouse trial, potted flowering sunflowers were evaluated as a trap crop placed at the ends of each cucumber row. Although the trap crop showed much higher attractiveness than the cucumber crop, this effect was not sufficient to provide an acceptable level of control according to the commercial growers. The growers suggested developing artificial sunflower odour as a more efficient lure for removal trapping. As a first step in this development, we tested the attraction of the headspace odour collected from sunflower in olfactometer trials. Sunflower headspace attracted a higher number of adults compared to a blank or a flowering cucumber. The sunflower odour was analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass-spectrometry to determine compounds possibly involved in L. rugulipennis attraction. The chemical analysis of the plant odour showed a well-defined differentiation between sunflower and cucumber, with a number of monoterpenes released exclusively by sunflower. This, plus an emission rate from sunflower being at least four times more abundant, opens the possibility of using synthetic sunflower volatiles to attract L. rugulipennis within a cucumber background.
