Purpose: To assess the healing process of the extraction socket and the dimensional changes that occur after alveolar ridge preservation utilizing a polylactide-co-glycolide scaffold (PLGA). Materials and Methods: The present study involved the extraction of 28 teeth from 14 patients. The total number of sockets was 28, which were divided into two groups consisting of 14 test sockets and 14 control sockets. The study group (SG) was subjected to socket preservation with a PLGA scaffold while the control group (CG) was left for spontaneous healing. The dimensions were measured before and after operation at 1, 3, and 5 mm below the alveolar crest horizontally and the height of buccolingual bone vertically. Results: According to the histologic analyses, the PLGA scaffold was resorbed within 4 months. CBCT imaging revealed a decrease in the horizontal crest dimension at three distinct coronoapical levels in SG, measuring 2.05 ± 1.05 mm at -1 mm, 1.51 ± 0.89 mm at -3 mm, and 0.92 ± 0.7 mm at -5 mm. CG showed readings of 1.22 ± 1 at -1 mm, 0.92 ± 0.67 at -3 mm, and 0.73 ± 0.69 at -5 mm. In comparison to CG, SG showed a significant reduction in horizontal losses at -1 mm. Vertical crest dimensions decreased by 1.64 ± 1.11 mm for the buccal bone height and by 1.56 ± 1.08 mm for lingual bone height in SG; in CG, the buccal and lingual bone height had mean values of 2.08 ± 1.44 mm and 1.73 ± 1.27 mm, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference observed in the vertical losses between the groups. Conclusions: Following a period of 4 months, the PLGA scaffold was completely resorbed. UNLABELLED: Biodegradable plastics are urgently needed to replace petroleum-derived polymeric materials and prevent their accumulation in the environment. To this end, we isolated and characterized a halophilic and alkaliphilic bacterium from the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The isolate was identified as a Halomonas species and designated CUBES01. Full-genome sequencing and genomic reconstruction revealed the unique genetic traits and metabolic capabilities of the strain, including the common polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis pathway. Fluorescence staining identified intracellular polyester granules that accumulated predominantly during the strains exponential growth, a feature rarely found among natural PHA producers. CUBES01 was found to metabolize a range of renewable carbon feedstocks, including glucosamine and acetyl-glucosamine, as well as sucrose, glucose, fructose, and further glycerol, propionate, and acetate. Depending on the substrate, the strain accumulated up to ~60% of its biomass (dry wt/wt) in poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), while reaching a doubling time of 1.7 h at 30°C and an optimum osmolarity of 1 M sodium chloride and a pH of 8.8. The physiological preferences of the strain may not only enable long-term aseptic cultivation but also facilitate the release of intracellular products through osmolysis. The development of a minimal medium also allowed the estimation of maximum polyhydroxybutyrate production rates, which were projected to exceed 5 g/h. Finally, also, the genetic tractability of the strain was assessed in conjugation experiments: two orthogonal plasmid vectors were stable in the heterologous host, thereby opening the possibility of genetic engineering through the introduction of foreign genes. IMPORTANCE: The urgent need for renewable replacements for synthetic materials may be addressed through microbial biotechnology. To simplify the large-scale implementation of such bio-processes, robust cell factories that can utilize sustainable and widely available feedstocks are pivotal. To this end, non-axenic growth-associated production could reduce operational costs and enhance biomass productivity, thereby improving commercial competitiveness. Another major cost factor is downstream processing, especially in the case of intracellular products, such as bio-polyesters. Simplified cell-lysis strategies could also further improve economic viability.

Given the multitude of extracellular enzymes at their disposal, many of which are designed to degrade natures polymers (lignin, cutin, cellulose, etc.), fungi are adept at targeting synthetic polyesters with similar chemical composition. Microbial-influenced deterioration of xenobiotic polymeric surfaces is an area of interest for material scientists as these are important for the conservation of the underlying structural materials. Here, we describe the isolation and characterization of the Papiliotrema laurentii 5307AH (P. laurentii) cutinase, Plcut1. P. laurentii is basidiomycete yeast with the ability to disperse Impranil-DLN (Impranil), a colloidal polyester polyurethane, in agar plates. To test whether the fungal factor involved in this clearing was a secreted enzyme, we screened the ability of P. laurentii culture supernatants to disperse Impranil. Using size exclusion chromatography (SEC), we isolated fractions that contained Impranil-clearing activity. These fractions harbored a single ~22 kD band, which was excised and subjected to peptide sequencing. Homology searches using the peptide sequences identified, revealed that the protein Papla1 543643 (Plcut1) displays similarities to serine esterase and cutinase family of proteins. Biochemical assays using recombinant Plcut1 confirmed that this enzyme has the capability to hydrolyze Impranil, soluble esterase substrates, and apple cutin. Finally, we confirmed the presence of the Plcut1 in culture supernatants using a custom antibody that specifically recognizes this protein. The work shown here supports a major role for the Plcut1 in the fungal degradation of natural polyesters and xenobiotic polymer surfaces.IMPORTANCEFungi play a vital role in the execution of a broad range of biological processes that drive ecosystem function through production of a diverse arsenal of enzymes. However, the universal reactivity of these enzymes is a current problem for the built environment and the undesired degradation of polymeric materials in protective coatings. Here, we report the identification and characterization of a hydrolase from Papiliotrema laurentii 5307AH, an aircraft-derived fungal isolate found colonizing a biodeteriorated polymer-coated surface. We show that P. laurentii secretes a cutinase capable of hydrolyzing soluble esters as well as ester-based compounds forming solid surface coatings. These findings indicate that this fungus plays a significant role in biodeterioration through the production of a cutinase adept at degrading ester-based polymers, some of which form the backbone of protective surface coatings. The work shown here provides insights into the mechanisms employed by fungi to degrade xenobiotic polymers.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is widely used for its high strength‐to‐weight ratio, gas barrier properties, and chemical resistance. The growing PET use highlights the demand for a better recycling system. Enzymatic recycling, alongside mechanical and chemical methods, is eco‐friendly and yields properties similar to virgin PET. Substrate properties (Tg, crystallinity, and specific surface area [SSA]) and enzyme stability significantly impact conversion efficiency. Higher SSA and lower crystallinity tend to yield improved depolymerization when employing leaf compost‐cutinase (LCC‐ICCG) enzymes. This study explored melt extrusion and foaming as pretreatment techniques to modify PET structural properties, using a low‐cost chemical foaming agent (CFA). The monomer conversion rate and efficiency during depolymerization were measured and related to the processing, extrudate micro‐ and meso‐structure, and polyester type. Pretreated PET substrates showed reduced Tg, crystallinity, density, and enhanced SSA, resulting in a 90% mass loss for foamed RPET and VPET substrates within 2 days. In contrast, PET with ~30% of cyclohexanedimethanol comonomer exhibited a nearly 50% lower depolymerization rate, with zero BHET production. It indicates that the combination of low crystallinity, low Tg, and high SSA leads to improved monomer conversion. The furan/maleimide Diels–Alder (DA) reaction has been exploited to construct thermally reversible macromolecular structures, such as linear or cross-linked polycondensates, or to cross-link linear polymers, using the free end-type or pending furan and maleimide moieties as the diene and dienophile reagents. Here we report a different approach for the synthesis of homopolymers based on a diol, in which the DA adduct formed by the furan and the maleimide sits within the diol monomer structure. The OH end groups of the diol were used for the synthesis of a polyester and a polyurethane using conventional polycondensation methods and to study their retro DA (rDA) depolymerization through the thermal decomposition of their inner DA adducts. The relevant contribution of this study was however the possibility of synthesizing a copolymer by heating these two polymers together to induce their rDA deconstruction and then lowering the temperature in order to allow the ensuing fragments to recombine statistically by successive DA couplings, thus building the corresponding ester-urethane copolymer. 1H NMR spectroscopy and DSC analysis were employed to confirm the success of this promising approach. Microneedles are an emerging class of transdermal drug delivery systems for biomedical applications. These devices allow minimally invasive and painless drug delivery, making them an attractive alternative to hypodermic injections. This paper focuses on the study of polymer‐based solid microneedles fabrication process using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method. Biodegradable and biocompatible polymers are selected as printing materials. For this study, the thermoplastic polylactic acid (PLA), currently used for FDM microneedle preparation was selected. To overcome the potential brittleness of PLA during transdermal application, two other materials are also studied: polycaprolactone (PCL) and a PLA/PCL blend. The effect of 3D printing parameters on the dimensional accuracy of the microneedles is studied to determine the optimum printing conditions for each filament. In addition, the dimensions and/or geometry of the microneedles are modified to print its with minimal dimensions. Among them, polymers derived from the copolymerization of PO and CO2 have been widely studied because of their excellent properties. To meet the expansion of the application range of CO2‐based polymers, regulation of the CU in the polymer is imperative. Based on the understanding of the relationship between catalyst synergy and structure, we designed a new generation of polyester‐based polymeric catalysts APEPC‐R and RPEPC‐N with discretely distributed active centers to achieve the synthesis of CO2‐based polymers with regulated CU (from 50% to 90%). The discrete arrangement of catalyst active centers was demonstrated by 1H NMR and UV‐vis characterization. Benefiting from multi‐site synergy, high molecular weight (Mn > 100 kg/mol) CO2‐based copolymers with CU among 50%—90% were successfully synthesized and their properties were firstly investigated. This work not only contributes to enriching the scope of the application of CO2‐based copolymers but also provides a new platform for the development of a new generation of catalysts. Biodegradable polymers are gaining attention as alternatives to non‐biodegradable plastics to address environmental issues. With the rising global demand for plastic products, the development of non‐toxic, biodegradable plastics is a significant topic of research. Aliphatic polyester, the most common biodegradable polyester, is notable for its semi‐crystalline structure and can be synthesized from fossil fuels, microbial fermentation, and plants. Due to great properties like being lightweight, biodegradable, biocompatible, and non‐toxic, aliphatic polyesters are used in packaging, medical, agricultural, wearable devices, sensors, and textile applications. The biodegradation rate, crucial for biodegradable polymers, is discussed in this review as it is influenced by their structural properties and environmental conditions. This review discusses currently available biodegradable polyesters, their emerging applications, and the challenges in their commercialization. Highlights Recycled polypropylene (rPP)/crystalline cellulose (rPP/CC) composites are promising alternatives for reducing the detrimental environmental consequences of virgin PP. However, the incompatibility of the rPP/CC composites hinders their widespread application. In this study, PP functionalized with maleinized hyperbranched polyol polyester (PP‐g‐MHBP) was used as a compatibilizing and plasticizing agent for the rPP/CC composites. Furthermore, the effect of PP‐g‐MHBP content on the rheological, thermal, morphological, and mechanical properties of the rPP/CC composites was evaluated. The composites were prepared at a mixing speed of 50 rpm for 7 min and the PP‐g‐MHBP content was varied between 0 and 20 wt%. The torque stabilization time was less than 1 min. The activation energy of flow (Ea$$ {E}_a $$) decreased with increasing PP‐g‐MHBP content, with its values ranging from 0.78 × 102 to 1.42 × 102 kcal.mol−1. The flow index (n$$ n $$) followed the opposite trend with values ranging from 0.55 ± 0.0030 to 0.85 ± 0.0010. PP‐g‐MHBP enhanced the processability, thermal stability and conductivity. The crystallinity, interactions between rPP and CC, and tensile modulus of the rPP/CC composites were also enhanced. Furthermore, it reduced the agglomeration of CC particles. The torque stabilization was lowest for all composites. The composites displayed low activation energy of flow. Recycled polypropylene and crystalline cellulose exhibited good interaction. AbstractSince the safety of new-generation polyester-based internal coatings regarding the migration of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) is poorly documented, studies are needed to identify NIAS originating from these food-contact materials (FCM). The aim of this study was to identify volatile and semi-volatile NIAS from polyester-based coatings in order to assess their hazard and ensure consumers’ safety with regard to exposure from canned food. Extraction and migration tests were carried out on a single polyester-coated tin plate (5 batches) using two solvents: acetonitrile and ethanol 95%, then FCM’s extracts and migrates were analysed by GC-MS. An antioxidant degradation (hydrolysis) product, 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid or fenozan (CAS RN: 20170-32-5), was identified and confirmed by reference standard in all migrates. To assess fenozan’s toxicity, several in vitro bioassays, such as the Ames test (to assess point mutation), the micronucleus assay (to detect chromosomal aberrations), and the iodide uptake assay (to study one mode of action for thyroid disruption) were conducted. Fenozan was negative in the Ames test on three strains of S. typhimurium (TA98, TA100, and TA1535) and on one strain of E.coli (WP2), with and without metabolic activation system (S9 mix) using direct incorporation and pre-incubation methods. The in vitro micronucleus assay conducted on HepG2 cells also exhibited a negative response following a 4-hour treatment with the S9 mix, and a 48-hour treatment without the S9 mix. A weak inhibitory effect was obtained when testing fenozan in the iodide uptake assay using rat thyroid FRTL-5 cells. Significant inhibition started from 800 µM of fenozan, with a maximal inhibition of almost 47% at 1000 µM. The findings indicate that fenozan exhibits an anti-thyroid activity in vitro. This research aims to correlate poly(xylitol sebacate) (PXS) nanoparticle formation via nanoprecipitation in the presence of Pluronic® F-127 to changes in polymer reaction times. PXS is successfully synthesized using xylitol and sebacic acid via melt polymerization (MP) at 10, 15 and 20 h. 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR confirmed the successful formation of PXS branched structures by the conversion of hydroxyl groups to acyl groups and ester bond formation in two different environments. The degree of branching and gel fraction increased with longer reaction time, which resulted in the crosslinking of PXS-MP-20H, deeming it insoluble for nanoparticle formation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed the thermal stability up to ~ 200 °C and an amorphous nature with subambient glass transition temperatures (Tg). Among all polyesters, PXS-MP-15H showed best and only nanoparticle formation with average diameter size ranging from 112 to 132 nm for curcumin-loaded and unloaded respectively confirmed using dynamic light scattering (DLS). PXS-MP-15H nanoparticles had a curcumin encapsulation efficiency of 23.9%. This study shows the potential of highly branched polyesters such as PXS for use as drug carriers for targeted delivery. Poly(ethylene glycol 1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene isosorbide terephthalate) (PEICT) copolymers synthesized from isosorbide (ISB), 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), ethylene glycol (EG) and terephthalic acid (PTA) via polycondensation are a class of heat-resistant bio-based polyesters. The content of biomass-sourced ISB has an important influence on the various properties of the terpolymers but lacks detailed study. Herein, we synthesized a series of amorphous terpolyesters with different contents of ISB by melt polycondensation of ISB, CHDM, EG and PTA in a 30 L reactor, and investigated the effect of ISB content on the thermal, mechanical, optical and rheological properties. As the content of ISB increasing, the complex viscosities of terpolyesters were increased and the intrinsic viscosities were decreased. The tensile strength was increased from 45.1 MPa for poly(ethylene glycol 1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate) (PCTG)to 48.1 MPa for PEI13.2CTandthe Tg was increased from 83.5 °C for PCTG (ISB 0 mol%) to 98.8 °C for PEI13.2CT (ISB 13.2 mol%). Controlling the cooling rate experienced by a material during a manufacturing process is a challenge and a major issue. Industrial processing techniques are very diverse and may involve a whole range of cooling rates, which are sometimes extremely high for small and/or thin manufactured parts. For polymers, the cooling rate has consequences on both the microstructure and the time-dependent properties. The common cooling rates associated with conventional calorimetric measurements are generally limited to a few tens of degrees per minute. This work combines several calorimetric techniques (DSC, modulated-temperature DSC, stochastically-modulated DSC and Fast Scanning Calorimetry) to estimate the critical cooling rate required to melt-quench fast-crystallizing polyesters to their fully amorphous state, based on the example of a series of poly(alkylene trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PCHs) with a number of methylene groups in the main structure of the repeating unit n C H 2 varying from 3 to 6. The even-numbered ones require faster cooling rates (about 3000 K s−1 for n C H 2 = 4, between 500 and 1000 K s−1 for n C H 2 = 6) compared to the odd-numbered ones (between 50 K min−1 and 100 K s−1 for n C H 2 = 3, between 10 and 30 K min−1 for n C H 2 = 5). Polaritons are generated by strong interaction between photons and matter, with the hybridization fundamentally changing the energy landscape of the system. Future exploitation of polaritons will benefit from implementing low‐cost, flexible, and easily tuneable configurations, as electronics have before. Here, coherent coupling of the carbonyl stretch vibrations of polyester (poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET) films to the optical modes of a Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity is presented, in which the FP cavity is directly formed on flexible, free‐standing, and commercially available PET films. For 2‐µm thick PET films, the carbonyl stretch vibration of the PET overlaps with the half‐wavelength FP cavity mode, leading to the coupling of the two modes, a Rabi splitting above 160 cm−1, and associated anticrossing in angular dispersion measurements. The study demonstrates dynamic control of light‐matter interaction strength by modulating film thickness under tension, finding that a 25% tensile stretch can tune the light‐matter interaction from 20:80 mixing to near‐perfect 50:50 hybridization at normal incidence. Purpose: To describe the incidence and management of delayed infections following frontalis sling suspension with polybutylate-coated polyester suture (Ethibond). Methods: Retrospective, interventional case series of 177 eyes of 150 patients, who underwent frontalis suspension surgery with Ethibond (Johnson and Johnson, USA), at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India, between January 2016 and February 2022. Patients were assessed for chronic secondary sling infection, defined as infection/suture granuloma occurring beyond 6 weeks post-surgery. All patients received postoperative oral antibiotics. The clinical profile, microbiological evaluation, antibiotic sensitivity patterns, and management outcomes were analyzed. Results: Delayed infection following Ethibond sling suspension was noted in 14 eyes of 13 patients (7.9%). Of these, eight cases (61.5%) were females. The average time interval from surgery to presentation was 7.5 months (range: 2.5 months to 2.5 years). Eleven eyes underwent sling removal. Of the three who received initial antibiotic course, two eventually needed sling removal. Microbiological evaluation was available in seven eyes (50%), with Staphylococcus aureus as the most common organism. Of the six positive cultures, five (83.3%) were resistant to fluoroquinolones (FQs). Conclusion: Frontalis suspension with Ethibond has an 8% incidence of delayed infections, with Staphylococcus aureus as the most common organism. The authors recommend early sling removal in all patients with infection and recommend consideration of an alternative material in the event of future revision surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel metaled fatty polyesters were prepared using polytransesterification reactions between dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and different fatty metaled (Si/Ge) alcohol obtained from the undec-10-en-1-ol. The corresponding yields were excellent and the structure of the polyesters were determined by spectroscopic methods. Considering one hour of polymerization, the polymers exhibited acceptable molecular weights. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that these polyesters were more stable than their corresponding monomers and presented thermal degradation above 400°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of biobased aliphatic‐aromatic copolyesters, poly(pentylene dodecanoate‐co‐furandicarboxylates) (PPeDFs) were synthesized via an esterification and polycondensation melt process. The copolyesters were characterized using gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle x‐ray scattering, and tensile testing. The thermal transition behavior was strongly dependent on composition, with the melting and glass transition temperatures reaching a minimum at approximately equimolar ratio of D to F. All copolyesters were stable below 300°C with their R600 (the weight of material remaining at 600°C) values increasing with F fraction. PPeD to PPeDF30 (e.g., mole ratio D/F = 7:3) show sharp PPeD crystalline reflections only while broad PPeF reflections are shown in PPeF and PPeDF90. PPeDF40 to PPeDF80 showed both crystal structures. The fractional crystallinity for the PPeD was much higher than PPeF and the fractional crystallinity of the copolymers showed a minimum at D/F ratios closer to the latter. The stress at break and modulus both exhibited maxima at D/F ratios that were either high or low, but somewhat surprisingly a strong maximum in percent elongation at break of over 600% occurs at PPeDF40. For this composition, a typical plastic behavior curve was found including a yield point, high elongation at break, and strain hardening. Traditionally, most flexible food packaging is made of linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) which cannot easily be recycled, nor will it degrade in a reasonable timescale. In this work, a biobased biodegradable polyester alternative was investigated as a possible replacement for LLDPE. High molecular weight poly (pentylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) with a 40/60 adipic acid/terephthalic acid mole ratio was synthesized using direct esterification and polycondensation. Glycerol and hexane‐1,2,5,6‐tetrol were added as branching agents to better match the structure of the LLDPE which in turn might help the ability of these materials in film‐blowing. Thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the copolyesters were thoroughly investigated. All copolyesters had a weight‐average molecular weight of over 140,000 g/mol, which is necessary for proper rheology, and were thermally stable up to 350°C. The addition of branching agents led to a slight decrease in crystallinity, d‐spacing, melting temperature, enthalpy of melting, stress at break, and elongation at break. However, an increase in Young's modulus and complex viscosity at high frequency were observed compared to PPeAT60 without branching agent added. Although the improved crystallinity and mechanical properties of the copolyesters made them viable for film‐blowing, the slow crystallization rate creates a major challenge. Global microplastic (MP) pollution from primary and secondary sources is partly caused by the growing trend towards the use of plastics. One of the most important factors for the persistence of MP in the environment is their high resistance to degradation. The washing process has been identified as a risk and source of various pollutants in wastewater and numerous studies have been published. This study focuses on three different polyester fabrics: woven, knitted and double-faced plush fabrics, which were washed under standard conditions with the reference detergent ECE A at 60 °C for 40 min. Different methods were used to quantify the released fragments in a 5- and 10- cycle wash, to analyse the samples gravimetrically and to characterise the wastewaters by physicochemical parameters and filter cake. The results proved that the structure of polyester fabrics plays a role in shedding, although most fragments were released from all polyester fabrics in the first washing cycles. A novel diester monomer synthesized from 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, a compound which can be derived from lignin, was used to obtain aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters (P1–P4) by melt polymerization with 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and either 1,4-butanedioic acid, 1,6-hexanedioic acid, 1,8-octanedioic acid, or 1,12-dodecanedioic acid as aliphatic diacid. Structure-property relations for the copolyesters were established using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile testing. The weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of the samples ranged from 41,400 to 48,300 g/mol. As the spacer length in the aliphatic diacid was increased, the glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased from 90 to 51 °C, the melting point (Tm) from 175 to 147 °C, the tensile modulus from 1800 to 980 MPa, and the yield strength from 76 to 54 MPa, while the elongation at break increased from 270 to 320%. The thermal stability of the copolyesters also decreased for longer aliphatic diacid spacers. The copolyester derived from 1,12-dodecanedioic acid displayed the highest degradation rate in artificial soil, with 4.4% degradation after 30 weeks, and low ecotoxicity in an earthworm viability test. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the world's third-most widely manufactured thermoplastic, but has the lowest recycling rate. The development of PVC-like plastics that can be depolymerized back to monomer contributes to a circular plastic economy, but has not been accessed. Here, we develop a series of chemically recyclable plastics from the reversible copolymerization of cyclic anhydride with chloral. The copolymerization is highly efficient through the anionic or cationic mechanism under mild conditions, yielding polyesters with tunable structure and properties from multiple commercial monomers. Notably, these polyesters manifest mechanical properties comparable to PVC and polystyrene. Meanwhile, such polyesters are flame-retardant like PVC due to high chloride content. Of significance, these polyesters can be depolymerized back to starting monomers at high temperatures owing to the reversibility of the copolymerization, leading to a circular economy. Overall, the readily available monomers, simple synthesis, advantageous performance, and practical recyclability make the polymers promising for applications. Seaming performance of a fabric is an important property because seams on a garment play a major role in determining the quality of the garment. Seam efficiency is calculated by the ratio of seam strength to fabric tensile strength. Seam strength and fabric strength are affected by the fabric-related properties and the stitch-related parameters. Therefore, as well as the effects of seaming parameters, dyeing, finishing, and laundering processes that the fabric is exposed to before the seaming processes have an effect on the seam efficiency. Polyester/viscose blended fabrics, which are frequently preferred in textiles, are used in this study, and the effects of bleaching, dyeing, finishing, laundering, and seaming processes on seam strength and seam efficiency, fabric tensile strength and fabric tensile elongation, air permeability, and thickness properties of these fabrics are examined. After the processes, there will be an increase or decrease in the properties depending on which process is examined in detail. The results are evaluated statistically. According to the results obtained, it has been observed that the mentioned processes are effective on seam efficiency. It can be said that seam strength and seam efficiency values are affected by the processes in different ways, and also that seam parameters are effective on seam strength values. Different effects of fabric direction on tensile strength and seam strength values were also observed. As explained in the study, these processes affect the other features differently. The latest studies agree that meniscal tears that require surgery should be repaired whenever possible to avoid early-onset osteoarthritis secondary to meniscectomy. Unfortunately, there are several limitations associated with meniscal sutures, making it difficult to put into practice the theory behind the concept of saving the meniscus. Meanwhile, there is an exponential growth in the use of tissue adhesives for surgery, but finding one suited to meniscal repair remains a struggle. This review has two main goals (1) to compile the various bioadhesives used in this field and (2) to list the criteria for an ideal meniscal bioadhesive. The review was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science in November 2023 without date restrictions. The inclusion criteria were: Studies published in English and focusing on meniscal repair using bioadhesives. The exclusion criteria were: Studies published in languages other than English. Adhesives used in combination with sutures, as the aim was to determine the adhesive's capabilities for meniscal repair alone. Synthetic adhesives such as polycyanoacrylates, polyethylene glycol, polyurethanes, and polyesters. Among the 11 bioadhesives found, fibrin is the only one that has been studied in humans. There are advantages and disadvantages to all the bioadhesives identified but none that fully meet the requirements for meniscal repair. The anatomy of meniscal tissue is complex and poses unique challenges that are compounded by arthroscopic stresses. The poly(phenolic ester)s are attracting growing attention due to their essential role in the application as biodegradable plastics. Thus, extensive efforts have been devoted to the development of methodology that allows facile preparation of poly(phenolic ester)s with controlled molecular weights for widespread utilities. However, it is highly challenging to introduce phenolic ester bond structure into polyesters from ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) to yield aromatic/semiaromatic poly(phenolic ester)s due to severe transesterification reactions. To synthesize poly(phenolic ester)s with desired structures and properties, scientists have developed various ring‐opening polymerization systems with distinct advantages. Here, we have summarized basic features and recent progresses of these methods, including the cyclic phenolic lactone polymerization system, the salicylic acid O‐carboxyanhydride polymerization system, and the dissymmetric cyclic phenolic lactide polymerization system, as well as other copolymerization routes. This study introduces phthalic anhydride (P) and glycerol (G)‐based polyester as an additive for upgrading lower‐grade bitumen to higher‐grade bitumen. The different colorless polyesters were synthesized using polycondensation of P and G as a monomer in the ratio of 1:1 and polymerization time of 1, 3, 5, and 7 h. A rheological analysis was performed on all the synthesized polyesters to check their performance with respect to their use in bitumen modification. The polyesters were blended with base bitumens (VG10) to obtain the modified bitumens that were tested for the rheological and physicochemical properties and to assess the performance based on the grade quality test. The quality test of the modified bitumens includes softening point (SP), penetration (PEN), kinematic viscosity (KV), dynamic viscosity (DV), and rheological properties as per standard ASTM test methods. Based on the performance evaluation, P1G1H3 polyester was found suitable for blending with bitumen, and further study was carried out with blending of P1G1H3 with 3, 6, 10, and 15 wt%. The finding illustrates that 6.0 wt% of polyester‐modified bitumen show an enhanced SP, KV, and DV by 23.6, 86, and 30%, respectively, while decreasing the PEN by 49% with respect to VG10. Polyester blending also improved the rheological parameters in terms of deformation resistance, load‐bearing capacity, and the viscoelastic nature of bitumen. The application and promotion of biodegradable plastics are hindered by the imbalance between their mechanical and degradation performance imbalance, as well as high costs. Herein, a series of poly(ethylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PEAT) copolyesters with excellent mechanical and degradation properties are synthesized by one‐step melt polycondensation. The influence of the proportion of aliphatic groups in the molecular chain on the structure and properties, especially the degradation performance, of the copolyesters was studied. The molecular chain flexibility and degradability of PEAT increases with increasing of adipic acid content and decreasing of ET fragment length (LET). The comprehensive mechanical properties of PEAT60 can be comparable to traditional packaging material poly(butylene adipateco‐terephthalate) (PBAT). The degradation performance of PEAT can be adjusted the molecular chain structure. PEAT with LET < 3 exhibit degradation performance, and PEAT with LET < 2.2 exhibit significant degradation acceleration. The excellent mechanical and degradable properties of PEAT copolyester make it expected to be used in degradable packaging and other fields to help solve plastic pollution, while its lower cost will aid in the promotion of degradable materials. Introduction: Orthodontic clear aligners and retainers have numerous advantages that is making them ever increasingly popular. However, they might, similar to any other oral appliance, contribute to biofilm formation and finally dental caries or white spot lesions or gingival inflammations. The literature on biofilm formation on orthodontic clear appliances is very scarce and limited to a few microorganisms and materials. Therefore, this experimental study evaluated the biofilm formation on 5 thermoformed and 3D printed CAD/CAM orthodontic retainers in 3 intervals. Methods: In this in vitro study, 345 specimens (270 test discs and 45 negative controls) were created from fabricated retainers. Retainers included a 3D printed CAD/CAM material (Detax) and four thermoformed retainers [Erkodent (polyethylene terephthalate glycol [PETG]); EasyVac (polyethylene); DB (polyester based on terephthalic acid); and Clear Tech]. They were all 1 mm thick, and all completely fabricated, i.e., heated or printed. The discs were placed in 96-well plates. Microorganisms were cultured on 270 discs for 24 h (90 discs), 72 h (90 other discs), and 5 days or 120 h (90 other discs). Biofilm formation of the strains and negative controls was measured using the microtiter plate assay by ELISA reading. The microbes' ability to produce biofilm was categorized based on the comparison of average optical density (OD) of tests versus a cut-off point OD (ODc) calculated as the average of the OD of corresponding negative controls plus 3× its standard deviation: non-biofilm former [OD ≤ ODc], weak biofilm former [ODc < OD ≤ (2 × ODc)], moderate biofilm former [(2 × ODc) < OD ≤ (4 × ODc)], and strong biofilm former [(4 × ODc) < OD]. These were also converted to ranked scores between zero (no biofilm) and 3. The difference between ODs with control ODs were calculated. These were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA, 2-way ANOVA, and Tukey tests (α = 0.05, α = 0.008). Results: The 3-way ANOVA showed that the overall difference among the ΔODs of 5 retainers (all microorganisms and all intervals combined, n = 270) was not significant (F = 1.860, P = 0.119). Nevertheless, the difference among 3 intervals (F = 31.607, P = 0.0000) and the difference among the 6 microorganisms (F = 24.044, P = 0.0000) were significant. According to the Tukey test, the differences between the 1st interval with either of the other two intervals was significant (both P values = 0.000). There were significant differences between Candida albicans with all other organisms (all 5 P values = 0.0000). All other pairwise comparisons were insignificant (all 10 P values ≥ 0.1). After taking the averages of the 3 intervals, the order of the biofilm generation for different materials were as follows: Detax (average score: 1.56), Easyvac (1.67), Erkodent (1.78), Clear Tech (1.83), BD (2.28). Conclusions: As far as these 6 microorganisms are of concern, there might not be a significant overall difference among the clear retainer materials tested in this study. A significant overall increase was observed between the first and third days, which later did not significantly increase more until day 5. In the present work, N-substituted glutamic acid, polyethylene and polypropylene glycols have been used to design biocompatible copolyesters via Steglich reactions. Due to the presence of alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks in their structures, these copolyesters are able to form self-stabilized nanoparticle dispersions in aqueous media. The lipophilic core of these nanoparticles can solubilize poorly water-soluble compounds and release them into a model of lipids in a human body. Moreover, the obtained copolyesters possess no cytotoxic effects over a wide concentration range. Polyester-based, self-adhesive asphalt waterproofing membranes have garnered significant attention due to their extensive use in building-waterproofing projects, with their resistance to aging in complex environments being particularly crucial. This study evaluates the performance changes of these membranes under thermo-oxidative aging and freeze–thaw cycling conditions. The thermo-oxidative aging process was simulated using a thin-film oven and combined with freeze–thaw cycle tests to assess membrane performance at various aging stages. Changes in functional groups were analyzed via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and tests for low-temperature flexibility, tensile properties, and peel strength were conducted. The results demonstrated that aging significantly reduced the membrane's low-temperature flexibility and peel strength, accompanied by oxidative reactions and a loss of lightweight components. The ring‐opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides is emerging as a powerful method for the synthesis of polyesters with innovative structures and properties. In this work, a series of dialkyl‐aluminum complexes stabilized by Schiff‐base ligands with different functional side arms (pyridine, amine, or phosphine) and different substituents on the phenoxy moieties have been synthetized and tested as catalysts in the ROCOP of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and succinic anhydride (SA). The selectivity of the catalysts in the ROCOP was significatively depending on the nature of the pendant arm and/ or of the substituents of the ligand framework. The complexes designed to have a dynamic coordination sphere in which the side arms simulate the role of a neutral cocatalyst favored the desired selectivity, giving poly(CHO‐alt‐SA) with narrow dispersity and negligible ether linkage. Highlights The influence of filling by iron‐containing fillers on the heat release kinetics and mechanical properties of industrial unsaturated polyester resin PN‐1 is investigated experimentally. The iron ore concentrate, electrostatic precipitator dust, high alumina cement grade HAC‐1, shavings made of cast iron, fine grade sand are used as fillers. To improve the strength characteristics of polyester resin composites the small amount (0.2–1.0 wt%) of organosilicon additives such as synthetic silicone rubber, tris(trimethylsiloxy) phenylsilane, octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane are used. The heat release kinetics is studied for different ratios between accelerator (cobalt naphthenate) and initiator (cyclohexanone peroxide). The time to reach the maximum temperature of the heat release is significantly reduced when a large amount of iron ore concentrate is used as filler. The temperature of maximum heat release decreases and the time to reach it increases when adding electrostatic precipitator dust in small amount of 5 wt% to the high filled by iron ore concentrate (295 wt%) composite system. The optimum in strength indicators associated with the ratio of different fractions in systems consisting of two fillers of different properties and granulometric composition is found. The highest values of compressive strength in the cement–iron ore concentrate and sand–iron ore concentrate systems are observed. An increase in the strength characteristics of composites by 15%–20% with organosilicon additive introduction is observed. The addition of the silicone rubber increases the strength properties of samples the most among all additives considered. Effect of filling by iron‐containing fillers on the heat release kinetics and mechanical properties of polyester resin is found. In response to the health and environmental concerns associated with the plasticizer dioctyl phthalate (DOP), this research explores the utilization of methyl oleate (MO) derived from plant oil, 1,2,4‐Benzeneticarboxylic anhydride (TMA) and isobutyric anhydride (IA) as a precursor for synthesizing a hyperbranched polyester named IA‐MO‐TMA. This polyester serves as an alternative plasticizer for Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The chemical structure of IA‐MO‐TMA was thoroughly characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectra, and its molecular weight was assessed. The PVC film, plasticized with IA‐MO‐TMA, underwent comprehensive testing using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Notably, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the plasticized PVC film exhibited a significant reduction from 75°C to −6.7°C. The plasticized film demonstrated an elongation at break of 318.1%, a tensile strength of 19.2 MPa, and a plasticizing efficiency of 109.9%. Moreover, the use of IA‐MO‐TMA as a plasticizer increased the initial decomposition temperature of PVC film from 235.6 to 264.1°C. A material capable of curing due to UV irradiation based on an alkyd oligomer and oligoorganosilsesquioxanes (OOSs) with functional thiol groups was obtained. Using microinterferometry, it was shown that the alkyd oligomer and OOS are completely compatible (mutually soluble). The resulting alkyd‐siloxane composition was cured under the action of UV irradiation due to reaction between double bonds of alkyd oligomer and thiol‐groups of silsesquioxane oligomer. The curing reaction takes 5 min with formation of coating, containing 99% of gel fraction, which is in 30 times faster in comparison with the classical method of alkyd curing in the presence of siccatives. The hydrophobicity of alkyd‐siloxane coatings also increases and varies depending on the content of OOS. The introduction of 50% OOS into the alkyd oligomer makes it possible to increase the water contact angle by 10° relative to the coating based on pure alkyd. A similar dependence is observed when studying the thermal stability of coatings. Thus, even with the introduction of 10% OOS into alkyd oligomer, the temperature at which a loss of 50% of mass occurs increases by 24°C relative to coatings based on a pure alkyd oligomer. With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, there is a growing focus on the synthesis of water‐solvent self‐emulsifying sizing agents. In this study, five types of anionic polyester sizing agents with varying molecular weights were synthesized to explore the effect of molecular weight on the interfacial bonding strength of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced vinyl resin composites. The results demonstrated that the molecular weights of the synthesized sizing agents were precise; the particles in the sizing agents were nanometer‐sized, monodisperse, and exhibited high thermal stability. When the molecular weight was 8000, it exhibited optimal wettability for CF, leading to a substantial improvement in the interlaminar shear strength, reaching 71.8 MPa, which represents a significant increase of 22.7% compared with commercial CFs (CFF). Additionally, the interfacial shear strength was maximized at 13.23 MPa, which was significantly increased by 14.2% compared with CCF. These significant improvements in surface properties and mechanical performance were attributed to the excellent wettability of the CF surface, effective spreading performance of the sizing agent, the presence of double bonds in the sizing agent facilitating reactions with free radicals on the CF surface, and the residual double bonds further undergoing curing with the vinyl resin, promoting the reinforcement of interface bonding. The application properties such as foam property, electrolyte tolerance, antibacterial activity and antistatic performance of the mixed systems of a novel Gemini quaternary ammonium salt with quadra‐cationic sites (TC‐GS) and sodium fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether carboxylate (AE9CNa) at various molar fraction of TC‐GS (αTC‐GS), were investigated systematically. Results show that TC‐GS/AE9CNa mixed systems with different ratios form a homogeneous and transparent solution, which exhibits excellent foam stability and antibacterial activity. The foam volume of the mixed system remains nearly constant from 400 s to 1000 s, and even when TC‐GS is 10 mg/L in the mixed systems, the antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) for 2 min. are all exceeded 99 %. The mixed systems of TC‐GS/AE9CNa at various αTC‐GS also demonstrate the superior electrolyte tolerance, their maximum tolerance of NaCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2 is severally beyond 270 g/L, 180 g/L and 180 g/L. In addition, both TC‐GS solution and the mixed systems have good antistatic properties, which can reduce the surface resistance of polyester fabric to ≤1010 Ω. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a widely used polymer additive manufacturing technique for polymer part manufacturing and prototyping. However, manufacturing speed, mechanical properties, and high costs, limit its suitability for industrial applications. In this study, researchers blended polyester and polyurethane resins with lattice structures to achieve a remarkable 70% reduction in production time and a 75% decrease in manufacturing costs. They explored five lattice structure geometries relevant to common literature applications. Lattice structures were manufactured using PA, PLA, PA-CF, and TPU filaments. The composite samples underwent comprehensive analysis, including SEM microscopic inspections, density measurements, and compression tests. Parameters such as density, yield strength, compressive strength, specific stress, modulus of elasticity, and toughness were evaluated. The findings revealed that polyester-based composites exhibited a remarkable 131% enhancement in mechanical properties, with toughness values increasing up to 12-fold. In this study, a series of aromatic hyperbranched polyester (Ar.HBPs) of different generations (G1-G4) were synthesized using one-shot solution poly condensation, and their structural, physical, thermal and optical properties were studied in detail. The formation of aromatic ester bond in the product was confirmed using spectral analyses (FTIR and NMR). Ar.HBP reaction kinetics was studied from the changes in acid-to-ester band using FTIR and the optimal reaction time is around 21 h (G1), 26 h (G2), 29 h (G3) and 31 h (G4). DSC thermal data revealed their glass transition temperature at around 120 °C. From TGA data, thermal degradation (T10, oC) of Ar.HBPs started at around 216 °C (G1), 230 °C (G2), 241 °C (G3) and 243 °C (G4). MALDI-TOF investigation confirmed the chemical structure and molecular weight of the synthesized Ar.HBPs. Their optical property was revealed in the UV region by the existence of a broad absorption peak at 580 nm. From the aforementioned characterization studies, the synthesized Ar.HBPs supported the formation of a highly branched structure and an improvement in thermal stability with increasing HBP generations from G1 to G4. Ar.HBP (G1-G4) synthesis reported in this work will serve as a guideline for understanding their reaction kinetics, and the influence of their final properties on applications such as energy materials, optoelectronic materials and devices. Many therapies require the transport of therapeutic compounds or substances encapsulated in carriers that reduce or, if possible, eliminate their direct contact with healthy tissue and components of the immune system, which may react to them as something foreign and dangerous to the patient's body. To date, inorganic nanoparticles, solid lipids, micelles and micellar aggregates, liposomes, polymeric micelles, and other polymer assemblies were tested as drug carriers. Specifically, using polymers creates a variety of options to prepare nanocarriers tailored to the chosen needs. Among polymers, aliphatic polyesters are a particularly important group. The review discusses controlled synthesis of poly(β-butyrolactone)s, polylactides, polyglycolide, poly(ε-caprolactone), and copolymers containing polymacrolactone units with double bonds suitable for preparation of functionalized nanoparticles. Discussed are syntheses of aliphatic polymers with controlled molar masses ranging from a few thousand to 106 and, in the case of polyesters with chiral centers in the chains, with controlled microstructure. The review presents also a collection of methods useful for the preparation of the drug-loaded nanocarriers: classical, developed and mastered more recently (e.g., nanoprecipitation), and forgotten but still with great potential (by the direct synthesis of the drug-loaded nanoparticles in the process comprising monomer and drug). The article describes also in-vitro and model in-vivo studies for the brain-targeted drugs based on polyester-containing nanocarriers and presents a brief update on the clinical studies and the polyester nanocarrier formulation approved for application in the clinics in South Korea for the treatment of breast, lung, and ovarian cancers. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to check the effectivity of plasma in the natural dyeing of polyester fabric using four natural dyes – Turkey red, Lac, Turmeric and Catechu using plasma and alum mordant. The surface modification on the polyester fabric by plasma along with the use of benign mordant alum is studied. The enhancement of dyeability in polyester fabric with natural dyes is the main focus. Due to surface modification, the wettability increases, which leads to better dye uptake. Better dye uptake and better dye adherence are the main objectives. Design/methodology/approach: Plasma-mediated natural dyeing is the main design of this research work. The effect of plasma treatment on surface modification of synthetic fabric polyester and its subsequent effects on their dyeing with different natural dyes, namely, Turkey red, Lac, Turmeric and Catechu are studied. The dyeability was further enhanced by the use of alum as mordant. The main focus is on the betterment of natural dyeing of polyester fabric using sustainable natural dyes resources for dyeing and to reduce wastewater contamination from the usage of toxic additive chemicals for cleaner production. Findings: Plasma-mediated and alum-mordanted dyeing method facilitated very good dyeability of all the four natural dyes, namely, Turkey red, Lac, Turmeric and Catechu. Color strength (K/S) values and fastness properties of plasma-treated samples were far better than untreated samples. The synergistic effect of plasma and alum mordanting has made natural dyeing of polyester very easy with very good fastness results. Natural dyeing of polyester after 2 min of plasma treatment showed excellent and desirable results. The process is also easy to be adapted by industries. Research limitations/implications: As polyester is hydrophobic, natural dyeing of polyester fabric is not very easy, but with plasma-mediated natural dyeing, it becomes a very facile dyeing method; thus, there are no limitations. Use of plasma has reduced the need for any chemical additives which are usually added during the dyeing process. Practical implications: This process of natural dyeing of polyester fabric can be scaled up to industrial dyeing with natural dyes. Plasma pretreatment of the fabric followed by premordanting with alum has facilitated the natural dyeing well. Social implications: Use of plasma in place of chemical modifiers can be a green and environmentally friendly approach for sustainable coloration of polyester fabric, providing a clean wet processing for textiles dyeing. Originality/value: The synergistic effect of plasma-mediated and alum-mordanted natural dyeing of polyester has not been attempted by any researcher. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is for the first time that pretreatment with atmospheric plasma followed by alum mordanting of polyester fabric has shown very good dye uptake and fastness properties as the dye molecules could penetrate well after 2 min of the plasma treatment. Innovative and renewable polymers and additives are the focus of increased research due to public and environmental pressure. There has been a recent uptick in interest from scientists in biobased "green" plasticizers that can be covalently bonded to replace harmful and migratory phthalate‐based plasticizers. Vegetable oils (VOs) are one of the biosources, as they are both plentiful and sustainable. This review aims to highlight the synthesis methods for soy‐based polyesters. Therefore, the chemistry of soybean oil as a polymeric material and its role in the synthesis of polyesters derived from soybeans are the primary topics of this review. This review covers the many ways in which soybean oil and its derivatives can be used to synthesize polyester, either directly or indirectly. The use of alkaline earth‐abundant metal catalysts as alternatives to transition metal catalysts in the depolymerization of plastic waste is a very important research area. In this work, the first method is described for the conversion of polyesters into value‐added compounds catalyzed by a magnesium catalyst. It is demonstrated that the commercially available, inexpensive and air‐stable, alkaline earth magnesium catalyst Mg(OTf)2 efficiently promotes the reductive depolymerization of several polyesters using pinacolborane (HBpin) as the reducing agent with good to excellent yields. This catalyst also remains very active in at least 12 consecutive polycaprolactone (PCL) reductive depolymerization reactions with yields between 89% and 81%. This magnesium catalyst is also efficient in the reductive depolymerization of the polycarbonate poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC.BPA). Furthermore, it is found that Mg(OTf)2 also successfully catalyzes the methanolysis of polyesters and polycarbonates at moderate temperature with excellent yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The performance of sustainable polymers can be modified and enhanced by incorporating functional groups in the backbone of the polymer chain that increases intermolecular interactions, thus impacting the thermal properties of the material. However, in-depth studies on the role of intermolecular interactions on the crystallization of these polymers are still needed. This work aims to ascertain whether incorporating functional groups able to induce intermolecular interactions can be used as a suitable systematic strategy to modify the polymer thermal properties and crystallization kinetics. Thus, amide and additional ester groups have been incorporated into aliphatic polyesters (PEs). The impact of intermolecular interactions on the melting and crystallization behavior, crystallization kinetics, and crystalline structure has been determined. Functional groups that form strong intermolecular interactions increase both melting and crystallization temperatures but retard the crystallization kinetics. Selecting appropriate functional groups allows tuning the crystallinity degree, which can potentially improve the mechanical properties and degradability in semicrystalline materials. The results demonstrate that it is possible to tune the thermal transitions and the crystallization kinetics of PEs independently by varying their chemical structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
