16. Role of Phosphorus and Triethylene Glycol Incorporation on the Activity of Model Alumina‐Supported CoMoS Hydrotreating Catalysts.

Abstract

Environmental regulations concerning fuel‐related sulfur emissions are currently experiencing worldwide expansion. This is motivating the research and development of improved hydrotreating (HDT) catalysts with carefully engineered synthesis methods that maximize activity as ultimate goal. In this contribution, the effect of phosphorus doping and triethylene glycol (TEG) incorporation on the genesis of the CoMoS phase of model HDT catalysts is assessed. Following a surface‐science approach, α‐Al2O3 single crystals with four orientations: C(0001), A(112‾ 0), M(101‾ 0), and R(11‾ 02) are used as model supports of the traditional γ‐Al2O3 support for the study of active phase‐support interactions at the molecular scale. The model catalysts are prepared by traditional impregnation of a solution containing metal and phosphorus precursors and TEG. The catalysts are characterized in the sulfide phase by XPS, XAS, TEM, and AFM, revealing that the calcination step is key in the emergence of distinctive metal‐support interactions, which are directly related to the nature of alumina surface sorption sites. In addition, TEG incorporation on dried catalysts increases metal sulfidation and enhances promotion with respect to non‐additivated systems, especially at mild sulfidation temperatures. The catalytic activity of the model catalysts is tested in a thiophene hydrodesulfurization reaction, revealing the following activity trend with respect to alumina surface orientations: A112‾0 ≫ M101‾0 >R11‾02 , C(0001). This trend is identical to the one observed for non‐phosphorus doped non‐TEG additivated model systems, confirming the predominance of surface effects on the catalytic activity over those exerted by P and TEG. By transposing these results to the industrial γ‐Al2O3 support, the (100) facet would provide surface sites that lead to better performing catalysts. 22. Design of a Pressure Swing Adsorption Process for Postcombustion CO2Capture

Abstract

The adsorption processes for postcombustion CO2capture are usually based on a temperature or vacuum swing (TSA or VSA). In the present contribution an alternative concept is presented, which is based on the regeneration of the solid sorbent (an immobilized amine) by a purge gas, low pressure vapor, under almost isothermal conditions. Because of the close to isothermal operation, the process consumes significantly less thermal and mechanical energy than conventional TSA and VSA processes, respectively. We present a rough design of such an isothermal concentration swing process based on a simplified, analytical model of a 2-step PSA (pressure swing adsorption) process. The analytical model allows a definition of the range of operating conditions that lead to the best compromise between energy consumption and productivity (size and number of the adsorbers). Moreover, it is possible to define the equilibrium and mass transfer properties of the ideal solid sorbent. The feasibility of the concentration swing process was finally validated by numerical simulations of a full PSA cycle under adiabatic conditions.

30. Indole Hydrodenitrogenation over Alumina and Silica-Alumina-Supported Sulfide Catalysts--Comparison with Quinoline.

Abstract

A detailed kinetic model was proposed to analyze experimental data obtained from indole hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) over γ-Al2O3 and amorphous silica-alumina (ASA)-supported NiMo catalysts. The goal was to investigate the support acidity effects on indole HDN and compare with a recent study on quinoline HDN. Similarly to quinoline HDN, indole HDN occurred via hydrogenation of the aromatic ring, followed by N-ring opening and exocyclic C-N bond breaking. The high support acidity of NiMo(P)/ASA exhibited a promoting effect for N-removal steps and adsorption of nitrogen compounds. However, in contrast to quinoline HDN, it did not clearly induce a positive effect for the hydrogenation step. The acidic function of ASA also favored the formation of byproducts such as toluene, cyclohexane, dimer, and trimer of indole. Catalytic conversion of a quinoline and indole mixture revealed a strong inhibiting effect of quinoline on indole HDN, whereas the inhibiting effect of indole on quinoline HDN was weak. The inhibition was weaker over NiMo(P)/Al2O3 than over NiMo(P)/ASA. This result is in agreement with a relative ranking of apparent adsorption constants of quinoline, indole, and their products on NiMo(P)/Al2O3 and ASA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
