Search

Unitarity sets upper limits on partial-wave elastic and inelastic cross-sections, which are often violated by perturbative computations. We discuss the dynamics underlying these limits in the non-relativistic regime, namely long-range interactions, and show how the resummation of the 2-particle-irreducible diagrams arising from squaring inelastic processes unitarizes both elastic and inelastic cross-sections. We provide a simple prescription to obtain the unitarized cross-sections from those that do not include resummation of the squared inelastic processes. The formation and decay of metastable bound states can deplete significantly the density of multi-TeV thermal-relic dark matter. The effect depends on the interplay of bound-state formation, ionisation, transition and decay processes. Existing calculations take into account bound-state ionisation and excitations due to the radiation of the thermal bath. However, the dynamics of Hydrogen recombination suggests that the resonant radiation produced in bound-state formation or de-excitations may backreact, ionising or exciting the bound states thus impeding recombination. In this paper we examine this effect in the context of dark-matter freeze-out. To this end, we employ the generalised Saha equilibrium equation for metastable bound states, and discuss its salient features. We show that, in sharp contrast to Hydrogen recombination, the radiation produced during dark matter freeze-out is more likely to thermalise or redshift, rather than ionise or excite the metastable bound states. This holds not only for the low-energy (resonant) radiation produced in bound-state formation and transition processes, but also for the high-energy radiation produced in dark-matter annihilations and bound-state decays. The formation and decay of metastable bound states can significantly decrease the thermal-relic dark matter density, particularly for dark matter masses around and above the TeV scale. Incorporating bound-state effects in the dark matter thermal decoupling requires in principle a set of coupled Boltzmann equations for the bound and unbound species. However, decaying bound states attain and remain in a quasi-steady state. Here we prove in generality that this reduces the coupled system into a single Boltzmann equation of the standard form, with an effective cross-section that describes the interplay among bound-state formation, ionisation, transitions and decays. We derive a closed-form expression for the effective cross-section for an arbitrary number of bound states, and show that bound-to-bound transitions can only increase it. Excited bound levels may thus decrease the dark matter density more significantly than otherwise estimated. The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation represents a class of single-field models with sharp deceleration of the rolling dynamics on small scales, leading to a significantly enhanced power spectrum of the curvature perturbations and primordial black hole (PBH) formation. Such a sharp transition of the inflationary background can trigger the coherent motion of scalar condensates with effective potentials governed by the rolling rate of the inflaton field. We show that a scalar condensate carrying (a combination of) baryon or lepton number can achieve successful baryogenesis through the Affleck-Dine mechanism from unconventional initial conditions excited by the USR transition. The Higgs doublet can mediate a long-range interaction between multi-TeV particles coupled to the Weak interactions of the Standard Model, while its emission can lead to very rapid bound-state formation processes and bound-to-bound transitions. Using the rates calculated in a companion paper, here we compute the thermal decoupling of multi-TeV WIMP dark matter coupled to the Higgs, and show that the formation of metastable dark matter bound states via Higgs-doublet emission and their decay decrease the relic density very significantly. This in turn implies that WIMP dark matter may be much heavier than previously anticipated, or conversely that for a given mass, the dark matter couplings to the Higgs may be much lower than previously predicted, thereby altering the dark matter phenomenology. We investigate the role of the Higgs \emph{doublet} in the thermal decoupling of multi-TeV dark matter coupled to the Weak interactions of the Standard Model and the Higgs. The Higgs doublet can mediate a long-range force that affects the annihilation processes and binds dark matter into bound states. More importantly, the emission of a Higgs doublet by a pair of dark matter particles can give rise to extremely rapid monopole bound-state formation processes and bound-to-bound transitions. We compute these effects in the unbroken electroweak phase. To this end, we consider the simplest renormalisable fermionic model, consisting of a singlet and a doublet under $SU_{L}(2)$ that are stabilised by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, in the regime where the two multiplets coannihilate. Using a multi-field stochastic approach, we investigate the vacuum expectation value (VEV) during inflation of a scalar field charged under a mildly broken global $U(1)$ symmetry that can play the role of baryon or lepton number, or possibly a dark baryon number or a combination of the three. Even for a CP invariant Lagrangian, the stochastic distribution of inflationary VEVs in general breaks CP spontaneously, allowing for successful baryogenesis via the Affleck-Dine mechanism. Indirect searches for dark matter (DM) have conventionally been applied to the products of DM annihilation or decay. If DM couples to light force carriers, however, it can be captured into bound states via dissipation of energy that may yield detectable signals. We extend the indirect searches to DM bound state formation and transitions between bound levels, and constrain the emission of unstable dark photons. Our results significantly refine the predicted signal flux that could be observed in experiments. As a concrete example, we use Fermi-LAT dwarf spheroidal observations to obtain constraints in terms of the dark photon mass and energy which we use to search for the formation of stable or unstable bound states., Comment: Approximately 40 pages and 20 figures. The formation of stable or meta-stable bound states can dramatically affect the phenomenology of dark matter (DM). Although the capture into bound states via emission of a vector is known to be significant, the capture via scalar emission suffers from cancellations that render it important only within narrow parameter space. While this is true for neutral scalar mediators, here we show that bound-state formation via emission of a charged scalar can be extremely significant. To this end, we consider DM charged under a dark $U(1)$ force and coupled also to a light complex scalar that is charged under the same gauge symmetry. We compute the cross-sections for bound-state formation via emission of the charged scalar, and show that they can exceed those for capture via vector emission, as well as annihilation, by orders of magnitude. This holds even for very small values of the DM coupling to the charged scalar, and remains true in the limit of global symmetry. We then compute the DM thermal freeze-out, and find that the capture into meta-stable bound states via emission of a charged scalar can cause a late period of significant DM depletion. Our results include analytical expressions in the Coulomb limit, and are readily generalisable to non-Abelian interactions. We expect them to have implications for Higgs-portal scenarios of multi-TeV WIMP DM, as well as scenarios that feature dark Higgses or (darkly-)charged inert scalars, including models of self-interacting DM., Comment: 33 pages, 20 figures

The thermal decoupling description of dark matter (DM) and co-annihilating partners is reconsidered. If DM is realized at around the TeV-mass region or above, even the heaviest electroweak force carriers could act as long-range forces, leading to the existence of meta-stable DM bound states. The formation and subsequent decay of the latter further deplete the relic density during the freeze-out process on top of the Sommerfeld enhancement, allowing for larger DM masses. While so far the bound-state formation was described via the emission of an on-shell mediator ($W^{\pm}$, $Z$, $H$, $g$, photon or exotic), we point out that this particular process does not have to be the dominant scattering-bound state conversion channel in general. If the mediator is coupled in a direct way to any relativistic species present in the Early Universe, the bound-state formation can efficiently occur through particle scattering, where a mediator is exchanged virtually. To demonstrate that such a virtually stimulated conversion process can dominate the on-shell emission even for all temperatures, we analyze a simplified model where DM is coupled to only one relativistic species in the primordial plasma through an electroweak-scale mediator. We find that the bound-state formation cross section via particle scattering can exceed the on-shell emission by up to several orders of magnitude., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

It has been recently demonstrated that the 125 GeV Higgs boson can mediate a long-range force between TeV-scale particles, that can impact considerably their annihilation due to the Sommerfeld effect, and hence the density of thermal relic dark matter. In the presence of long-range interactions, the formation and decay of particle-antiparticle bound states can also deplete dark matter significantly. We consider the Higgs boson as mediator in the formation of bound states, and compute the effect on the dark matter abundance. To this end, we consider a simplified model in which dark matter co-annihilates with coloured particles that have a sizeable coupling to the Higgs. The Higgs-mediated force affects the dark matter depletion via bound state formation in several ways. It enhances the capture cross-sections due to the attraction it mediates between the incoming particles, it increases the binding energy of the bound states, hence rendering their ionisation inefficient sooner in the early universe, and for large enough couplings, it can overcome the gluon repulsion of certain colour representations and give rise to additional bound states. Because it alters the momentum exchange in the bound states, the Higgs-mediated force also affects the gluon-mediated potential via the running of the strong coupling. We point out that current and planned telescopes have the potential of probing annihilating Dark Matter (DM) with a mass of O(100) TeV and beyond. As a target for such searches, we propose models where DM annihilates into lighter mediators, themselves decaying into Standard Model (SM) particles. These models allow to reliably compute the energy spectra of the SM final states, and to naturally evade the unitarity bound on the DM mass. Indeed, long-lived mediators may cause an early matter-dominated phase in the evolution of the Universe and, upon decaying, dilute the density of preexisting relics thus allowing for very large DM masses. We compute this dilution in detail and provide results in a ready-to-use form. Considering for concreteness a model of dark U(1) DM, we then study both dilution and the signals at various high energy telescopes observing gamma rays, neutrinos and charged cosmic rays. If dark matter (DM) couples to a force carrier that is much lighter than itself, then it may form bound states in the early universe and inside haloes. While bound-state formation via vector emission is known to be efficient and have a variety of phenomenological implications, the capture via scalar emission typically requires larger couplings and is relevant to more limited parameter space, due to cancellations in the radiative amplitude. However, this result takes into account only the trilinear DM-DM-mediator coupling. Theories with scalar mediators include also a scalar potential, whose couplings may participate in the radiative transitions. We compute the cross-sections for the radiative capture of non-relativistic particles into bound states, in unbroken perturbative non-Abelian theories. We find that the formation of bound states via emission of a gauge boson can be significant for a variety of dark matter models that feature non-Abelian long-range interactions, including multi-TeV scale WIMPs, dark matter co-annihilating with coloured partners and hidden-sector models. Our results disagree with previous computations, on the relative sign of the Abelian and non-Abelian contributions. In particular, in the case of capture of a particle-antiparticle pair into its tightest bound state, we find that these contributions add up, rather than partially canceling each other. We apply our results to dark matter co-annihilating with particles transforming in the (anti)fundamental of SU(3)c, as is the case in degenerate stop-neutralino scenarios in the MSSM. We show that the radiative formation and decay of particle-antiparticle bound states can deplete the dark matter density by (40-240)%, for dark matter heavier than 500 GeV. The unexpectedly strong 21cm absorption signal detected by the EDGES experiment suggests that the baryonic gas was colder at redshift $z\sim 17$ than predicted in the standard scenario. We discuss a mechanism to lower the baryon temperature after recombination. We introduce a stable, negatively-charged particle with a non-negligible cosmological abundance, such that the universe remains charge-neutral but the electron and proton numbers are no longer equal. The deficit of electrons during recombination results in an earlier decoupling of the baryon gas temperature from that of the CMB. This implies a smaller ratio of the gas and CMB temperature at $z\sim 17$. The parameter space of the mechanism where the 21 cm absorption signal is significantly enhanced is probed by the CMB spectrum, cooling of stars and supernovae, and colliders. Dark matter (DM) coupled to light mediators has been invoked to resolve the putative discrepancies between collisionless cold DM and galactic structure observations. However, $\gamma$-ray searches and the CMB strongly constrain such scenarios. To ease the tension, we consider asymmetric DM. We show that, contrary to the common lore, detectable annihilations occur even for large asymmetries, and derive bounds from the CMB, $\gamma$-ray, neutrino and antiproton searches. We consider the long-range effect of the Higgs on the density of thermal-relic dark matter. While the electroweak gauge boson and gluon exchange have been previously studied, the Higgs is typically thought to mediate only contact interactions. We show that the Sommerfeld enhancement due to a 125 GeV Higgs can deplete TeV-scale dark matter significantly, and describe how the interplay between the Higgs and other mediators influences this effect. Dark matter that possesses a particle-antiparticle asymmetry and has thermalised in the early universe, requires a larger annihilation cross-section compared to symmetric dark matter, in order to deplete the dark antiparticles and account for the observed dark matter density. The annihilation cross-section determines the residual symmetric component of dark matter, which may give rise to annihilation signals during CMB and inside haloes today. We consider dark matter with long-range interactions, in particular dark matter coupled to a light vector or scalar force mediator. We compute the couplings required to attain a final antiparticle-to-particle ratio after the thermal freeze-out of the annihilation processes in the early universe, and then estimate the late-time annihilation signals. We show that, due to the Sommerfeld enhancement, highly asymmetric dark matter with long-range interactions can have a significant annihilation rate, potentially larger than symmetric dark matter of the same mass with contact interactions. We discuss caveats in this estimation, relating to the formation of stable bound states. Finally, we consider the non-relativistic partial-wave unitarity bound on the inelastic cross-section, we discuss why it can be realised only by long-range interactions, and showcase the importance of higher partial waves in this regime of large inelasticity. We derive upper bounds on the mass of symmetric and asymmetric thermal-relic dark matter for s-wave and p-wave annihilation, and exhibit how these bounds strengthen as the dark asymmetry increases., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures. Dark matter (DM) charged under a dark U(1) force appears in many extensions of the Standard Model, and has been invoked to explain anomalies in cosmic-ray data, as well as a self-interacting DM candidate. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive phenomenological analysis of such a model, assuming that the DM abundance arises from the thermal freeze-out of the dark interactions. We include, for the first time, bound-state effects both in the DM production and in the indirect detection signals, and quantify their importance for Fermi, AMS, and CMB experiments. We find that DM in the mass range 1 GeV to 100 TeV, annihilating into dark photons of MeV to GeV mass, is in conflict with observations. Instead, DM annihilation into heavier dark photons is viable. We point out that the late decays of multi-GeV dark photons can produce significant entropy and thus dilute the DM density. We calculate the cross-sections for the radiative formation of bound states by dark matter whose interactions are described in the non-relativistic regime by a Yukawa potential. These cross-sections are important for cosmological and phenomenological studies of dark matter with long-range interactions, residing in a hidden sector, as well as for TeV-scale WIMP dark matter. We provide the leading-order contributions to the cross-sections for the dominant capture processes occurring via emission of a vector or a scalar boson. We offer a detailed inspection of their features, including their velocity dependence within and outside the Coulomb regime, and their resonance structure. If dark matter couples directly to a light force mediator, then it may form bound states in the early universe and in the non-relativistic environment of haloes today. In this work, we establish a field-theoretic framework for the computation of bound-state formation cross-sections, de-excitation and decay rates, in theories with long-range interactions. Using this formalism, we carry out specific computations for scalar particles interacting either via a light scalar or vector mediator. At low relative velocities of the interacting particles, the formation of bound states is enhanced by the Sommerfeld effect. For particle-antiparticle pairs, we show that bound-state formation can be faster than annihilation into radiation in the regime where the Sommerfeld effect is important. We consider indirect detection signals of atomic dark matter, with a massive dark photon which mixes kinetically with hypercharge. In significant regions of parameter space, dark matter remains at least partially ionized today, and dark atom formation can occur efficiently in dense regions, such as the centers of galactic halos. The formation of dark atoms is accompanied by emission of a dark photon, which can subsequently decay into Standard Model particles. We discuss the expected signal strength and compare it to that of annihilating dark matter. As a case study, we explore the possibility that dark atom formation can account for the observed 511 keV line and outline the relevant parameter space., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Many baryogenesis scenarios invoke the charge parity (CP) violating out-of-equilibrium decay of a heavy particle in order to explain the baryon asymmetry. Such scenarios will in general also allow CP violating scatterings. We study the effect of these CP violating scatterings on the final asymmetry in a neutron portal scenario.
