This study evaluated the universality of the TOMM 2 and provided a reference sample of cognitively intact adults living in Spain whose native language was Spanish. A total of 203 adults completed the TOMM 2 from June 2019 to January 2020. When using the original TOMM cutoff scores derived from English speakers, all participants scored in a range that would suggest that they passed the TOMM. When using a cut score less than 40 on Trial 1, only one participant in this study would be mistakenly classified as providing an invalid performance. Spanish-speaking adults in Spain from this study achieved a perfect score on Trial 1 at a rate more than double that of English-speaking individuals on the original TOMM. At the item level, all but one item met the minimum standard for performance validity; this item fell only marginally below the standard at 89%. This study found a very low failure rate for the TOMM 2, suggesting that the second edition has at least as high specificity as the original in Spanish adults.

Purpose/objective: Psychometric network analysis (PNA) is an application of dynamic systems theory that can inform measurement of complex rehabilitation phenomena such as depressive symptom patterns in veterans and service members (V/SMs) after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study applied PNA to the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a common measure of depressive symptoms, in a sample of V/SMs with TBI at Years 1 and 2 (Y1-2) postinjury., Research Method/design: A sample of 808 V/SMs with TBI participated, 594 contributing PHQ-9 data at Y1 and 585 at Y2. Participants were recruited while or after receiving inpatient postacute rehabilitation from one of five Veterans Affairs Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers., Results: The networks were stable and invariant over time. At both times, network structure revealed the cardinal depressive symptom "feeling down, depressed, or hopeless," as evidenced by its strength centrality. In the Y1 network, the suicidal ideation node was connected exclusively to the network through the guilt node, and in the Y2 network, the suicidal ideation node formed a second connection through the low mood node. The guilt node was the second most influential node at Y1 but was replaced by anhedonia node at Y2., Conclusions/implications: This study demonstrated the potential of PNA in rehabilitation research and identified the primacy of feeling down, depressed, and hopeless after TBI at both Y1 and Y2, with guilt being the second most influential symptom at Y1, but replaced by anhedonia at Y2, providing supportive evidence that the relationships among depressive symptoms after TBI are dynamic over time. Background: In the United States (U.S.), it is estimated that 17.6 % of adults have experienced Long COVID, a condition where symptoms newly develop and linger after initial COVID-19 infection. Long COVID is associated with significantly reduced quality of life (QoL), and patient-provider relationships have been shown to influence QoL for patients in general., Objective: The objective for this study was to better understand the role of patient-provider relationships in shaping QoL among U.S. adults with Long COVID., Methods: This study carried out an online survey among U.S. adult with Long COVID (N = 792)., Results: Respondents with at least a bachelor's degree reported higher QoL, and older respondents were more likely to report lower QoL; trust in providers was a significant predictor of higher QoL, while dismissal of Long COVID symptoms was associated with lower QoL (all p < .05)., Conclusions: Healthcare providers should be aware of the importance of trust in the relationship with their Long COVID patients and the impact this may have on patients' QoL. Background: This study provides a detailed examination of older Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and dementia and their caregivers, focusing on Veterans' demographic, clinical, functional, safety risk, and behavioral characteristics and caregivers' demographic, clinical, and care-related characteristics and well-being., Methods: Veterans' caregivers (N = 110) completed a telephone-based survey., Results: Veterans averaged eight comorbid health conditions, with over 60% having chronic pain, hypertension, post-traumatic stress disorder, or depression. Caregivers reported helping with an average of three activities of daily living, with the highest percentages of Veterans needing assistance with grooming, dressing, and bathing. Almost all Veterans needed assistance with shopping, cooking, medication management, housework, laundry, driving, and finances. Veterans averaged two safety risks, the most common being access to dangerous objects, access to a gun, and not being able to respond to emergency situations. Although Veterans averaged 14 behavioral concerns, caregivers reported that their family needs relating to TBI were generally met or partly met, and they voiced confidence in their ability to respond to behaviors and control their upsetting thoughts. Caregivers' mean burden score was severe, while mean depression and anxiety scores were mild. Caregivers reported an average of 10.5 h per day providing care and 20.1 h per day on duty., Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the increased presence of impairments, safety risks, and behavioral issues in Veterans with comorbid TBI and dementia, as well as increased impacts on families' burdens and care provision requirements. Clinicians should be alert for and educate TBI patients and caregivers on the warning signs of post-TBI dementia and its associated functional, behavioral, and safety risk profile, as well as challenges related to caregiver well-being. Healthcare policymakers must consider the increased caregiver demands associated with comorbid TBI and dementia, as well as the need for expanded long-term support and services.

Background: The lack of standardized reporting for crucial organizational factors in rehabilitation poses a significant barrier to understanding their impact on patient outcomes in clinical trials and meta-analyses., Aim: Based on the categories in the International Classification of Service Organization in Rehabilitation (ICSO-R 2.0), we aimed to develop reporting standards specifically for organizational factors in clinical trials., Methods: A comprehensive two-step process was conducted. In Step 1, important categories were identified. The identification was based on previous results from a Delphi survey with international stakeholder participation, two systematic literature reviews and results from focus groups with users in Germany, Indonesia and Norway. Step 2 involved the necessary reduction of categories and the proposal of reporting specifications, achieved through two voting rounds among key researchers, stakeholders and users., Results: The suggested minimum reporting set comprises Context and Setting as well as Quality assurance and management. The Context and Setting is proposed to include whether the intervention is delivered by Hospital, Community or Other service providers. The Mode of delivery is proposed to be specified as Inpatient, Outpatient, In-home, or Tele-rehabilitation. Furthermore, the Level of specialization (Primary/Secondary) and the Phase of service delivery Acute, Subacute or Long-term rehabilitation services should be reported. The Quality assurance and management should be reported as Yes or No, with the option Yes requiring description of the quality assurance applied in the methods section., Conclusions: This study proposed a compulsory and standardized reporting of organizational factors in clinical trials to facilitate the generation of scientific evidence regarding effective service provision and delivery in rehabilitation medicine. Authors are encouraged to consider the proposed reporting set to testing, criticism, and modification to enhance its applicability and robustness.

Background: Traumatic injuries, defined as physical injuries with sudden onset, are a major cause of distress and disability, with far-reaching societal consequences. A significant proportion of trauma survivors report persistent symptoms and difficulties after the injury, and studies show unmet health care needs. Self-management programs delivered in the sub-acute phase after traumatic injuries are scarcely evaluated. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management program (SEMPO), delivered 3-4 months after moderate-to-severe traumatic injury., Methods: This study protocol describes a pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) with two classical RCT arms (intervention and control) and an explorative self-selection arm. 220 patients will be recruited from Oslo University Hospital, the largest Trauma Referral Centre in Norway. Patients aged 18-72 years residing in the south-east region of Norway, admitted to the Trauma Centre directly or within 72 h after having sustained a moderate to severe traumatic injury, defined as a New Injury Severity Score > 9, having at least 2 days hospital stay, and reporting injury-related symptoms and impairment at discharge from the acute hospital will be included. Patients will be randomly assigned to either a classical RCT randomization arm (intervention or control arm) or to a self-selection arm. In the randomization arm, participants are further randomized into intervention or control group. Participants allocated to the self-selection arm will choose to partake either in the intervention or control arm. The primary outcome is the level of self-efficacy in trauma coping assessed 6 months after completion of the intervention, with a similar time point for the control group. Secondary outcomes include symptom burden, physical functioning and disability, return to work and health care utilization, health-related quality of life, and communication competency. In addition, patients will be asked to nominate one domain-related measurement as their preferred outcome measure., Discussion: This RCT will determine the effect of a self-management program tailored to patients with moderate to severe physical trauma, and the self-selection arm incorporates the potential influence of patient treatment preferences on intervention results. Purpose: The aim of the current study was to examine differences in trajectories of pain, disability, and health related quality of life (HRQOL) between non-Norwegian and Norwegian patients with neck and back pain over 12 months., Methods: The study is based on data from the Norwegian Neck and Back Registry (NNRR). The data include demographics and patient-reported outcome measures such as pain rating, the Oswestry Disability Index and HRQOL. Data were collected at baseline, 6 and 12 months after consultation for neck and back pain in specialist health care., Results: A total of 5012 patients were included. We found a significant main effect of nationality. Non-Norwegian patients showed higher levels of pain and disability and lower HRQOL than Norwegian patients. Both patient groups exhibited an improvement in all three outcomes at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. The improvement was similar for pain with the greatest improvement taking place during the first 6 months and then slightly flattening out. For disability and HRQOL, we observed a differential effect over time as a function of nationality. Both groups reported an improvement the first 6 months, however, while the Norwegian patients continued their improvement to 12 months, non-Norwegian patients had increasing disability and lower HRQOL at 12 months., Conclusion: Both patient groups improved over the 12-month period. Non-Norwegian patients showed an overall higher level of pain, disability and lower HRQOL compared to Norwegian patients, with a differential effect over time as a function of nationality for disability and HRQOL. Background: Veterans with substance use disorder (SUD) are at high risk for cognitive problems due to neurotoxic effects of chronic drug and alcohol use coupled in many cases with histories of traumatic brain injury (TBI). These problems may in turn result in proneness to SUD relapse and reduced adherence to medical self-care regimens and therefore reliance on health care systems. However, the direct relationship between cognitive function and utilization of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) SUD and other VHA health care services has not been evaluated. We sought initial evidence as to whether neurocognitive performance relates to repeated health care engagement in Veterans as indexed by estimated VHA care costs., Methods: Neurocognitive performance in 76 Veterans being treated for SUD was assessed using CNS-Vital Signs, a commercial computerized cognitive testing battery, and related to histories of outpatient and inpatient/residential care costs as estimated by the VHA Health Economics Resource Center., Results: After controlling for age, an aggregate metric of overall neurocognitive performance (Neurocognition Index) correlated negatively with total VHA health care costs, particularly with SUD-related outpatient care costs but also with non-mental health-related care costs. Barratt Impulsiveness Scale scores also correlated positively with total VHA care costs., Conclusions: In Veterans receiving SUD care, higher impulsivity and lower cognitive performance were associated with greater health care utilization within the VHA system. This suggests that veterans with SUD who show lower neurocognitive performance are at greater risk for continued health problems that require healthcare engagement. Background: The responsibility of care for Veterans and Service Members (V/SMs) with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often defaults to informal family caregivers. Caregiving demands considerable knowledge, skill, and support to facilitate the health and well-being of V/SMs and themselves. Persistent and common TBI caregiver issues include strain, depression, and anxiety. While evidence-based, brief interventions have been developed and implemented for family caregivers in Veteran neurodegenerative populations, few interventions have been developed, adapted, or tested to support the unique needs of caregivers of V/SMs with TBI., Objective: This study will adapt and test an evidence-based, personalized, 6-session telehealth caregiver intervention, "Resources for Enhancing All Caregivers' Health" (REACH), to meet the unique needs of caregivers of V/SMs with TBI. If successful, a community-based participatory research team will develop an implementation plan to roll out REACH TBI across the national Veterans Affairs Polytrauma System of Care., Methods: This mixed methods, crossover waitlist control clinical trial will use a Type 1 Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation approach to adapt and then test the effects of REACH TBI on key TBI caregiver outcomes., Results: This study was funded by the Department of Defense in September 2023. Objective: To create a census-based composite neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation index (NSDI) from geocoded residential addresses and to quantify how NSDI aligns with individual-level socioeconomic factors among people with traumatic brain injury (TBI)., Setting: Community., Participants: People enrolled in the TBI Model Systems National Database (TBIMS NDB)., Design: Secondary analysis of a longitudinal cohort study., Main Measures: The TBIMS-NSDI was calculated at the census tract level for the United States population based on a principal components analysis of eight census tract-level variables from the American Community Survey. Individual socioeconomic characteristics from the TBIMS NDB were personal household income, education (years), and unemployment status. Neighborhood:Individual NSDI residuals represent the difference between predicted neighborhood disadvantage based on individual socioeconomic characteristics versus observed neighborhood disadvantage based on the TBIMS-NSDI., Results: A single principal component was found to encompass the eight socioeconomic neighborhood-level variables. It was normally distributed across follow-up years 2, 5, and 10 post-injury in the TBIMS NDB. In all years, the TBIMS-NDSI was significantly associated with individual-level measures of household income and education but not unemployment status. Males, persons of Black and Hispanic background, Medicaid recipients, persons with TBI caused by violence, and those living in urban areas, as well as in the Northeast or Southern regions of the United States, were more likely to have greater neighborhood disadvantage than predicted based on their individual socioeconomic characteristics., Conclusions: The TBIMS-NSDI provides a neighborhood-level indicator of socioeconomic disadvantage, an important social determinant of outcomes from TBI. The Neighborhood:Individual NSDI residual adds another dimension to the TBIMS-NSDI by summarizing how a person's socioeconomic status aligns with their neighborhood socioeconomics. Future studies should evaluate how both measures affect TBI recovery and life quality. Abstract: Patients with physical traumatic injuries frequently require long-term rehabilitation services. To strengthen rehabilitation services in the postacute phase, we need to assess characteristics of this population and their healthcare and rehabilitation needs in the community. This brief report summarizes the frequency of unmet rehabilitation needs in community-based rehabilitation during the first year after moderate and severe trauma. Additionally, the associations between sociodemographic, injury severity factors and unmet needs were examined. Data from a prospective multicenter cohort study of patients with moderate and severe trauma (New Injury Severity Score > 9) of all ages, discharged alive from two regional trauma centers in 2020 were used. Needs were estimated using the Needs and Provision Complexity Scale. Overall, 46% of patients had unmet needs at 12-mo postinjury, particularly related to the provision of rehabilitation services, specialist follow-ups, and social and family support. The probability of unmet needs was associated with age, preinjury comorbidities, and impaired functioning. Objective: To describe the incidence of self-reported COVID-19 history in a longitudinal cohort of individuals with complicated mild to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and describe demographic, injury and functional differences based on history of COVID-19 infection., Design: Individuals with complicated mild to severe TBI aged 16 or older at time of injury who were enrolled in the TBI Model Systems longitudinal cohort study, completed a baseline or follow-up interview between October 1, 2021-March 31, 2023, and provided information about COVID-19 history and timing of COVID-19 infection was collected., Results: Of the 3,627 individuals included in the analysis, 29.5% reported a history of COVID-19 infection. Those with reported COVID-19 history tended to be younger, not of a racial/ethnic minority background, and greater functional status at follow up based on the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended scale compared to those with no reported COVID-19 history (p < 0.05). Among those with COVID-19 history, 61.8% did not receive medical care, 27.6% received medical care but no hospitalization, and 10.5% were hospitalized. Of those hospitalized, 21.4% required ventilator use., Conclusion: Incidence of COVID-19 diagnosis and related hospitalization characteristics in persons with complicated mild to severe TBI was similar to national incidence between March 2020-2023. Objective: To examine the association between participation and satisfaction with life at 1, 2, 5, and 10 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in older adults., Setting: Community., Participants: Participants ( N = 2362) who sustained complicated mild to severe TBI, requiring inpatient rehabilitation, at age 60 years or older and had follow-up data on participation and satisfaction with life for at least 1 follow-up time point across 1, 2, 5, and 10 years. Age at each time period was categorized as 60 to 64 years, 65 to 75 years, and 75 years or older., Design: Secondary data analysis of a large multicenter database., Main Measures: Three domains (Productivity, Social Relations, Out and About) of the Participation Assessment With Recombined Tools-Objective (PART-O); Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS)., Results: SWLS increased over the 10 years after TBI and was significantly associated with greater frequency of participation across all domains. There was a significant interaction between age and PART-O Social Relations such that there was a weaker relationship between Social Relations and SWLS in the oldest group (75 years or older). There was no interaction between Productivity or Out and About and age, but greater participation in both of these domains was associated with greater life satisfaction across age groups., Conclusions: These findings indicate that greater participation is associated with increased satisfaction with life in older adults, across all participation domains over the first 10 years postinjury, suggesting that rehabilitation should target improving participation even in older adults. Objective: To generate normative data (ND) for executive functions tests in the Waranka minority population of Ecuador. Method: Four-hundred participants aged 6-17 completed the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Trail-Making Test (TMT), Modified-Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST), and Test of Colors-Words (STROOP). Scores were normed using multiple linear regressions, including age, age 2 , natural logarithm of mean parent education (MPE), sex, bilingualism, and two-way interactions as predictors. Results: Age by MPE and Age 2 by MPE interactions arose for SDMT, so that children with illiterate parents scored lower than those with literate parents. Girls scored higher in SDMT. All TMT and M-WCST scores were influenced by age 2 . Age by MPE interaction was found for TMT-A, so that children with higher MPE went faster; and age by bilingualism interaction for TMT-B, so that more bilingual children needed less time. Stroop-Word and Color were influenced by age 2 by MPE interaction, so that children, while older, scored higher, especially those with higher MPE. Also, age 2 by sex interaction arose, so that girls increased scores curvilinearly while boys linearly. Word-Color was influenced by age, while Stroop-interference by age 2 . Age by MPE interaction was found for MCST-Categories and Perseveration, so that perseverations decreased to then increased, especially in those with illiterate parents. M-WCST-Category scores increased to then decrease later on age in children with illiterate parents. Z-scores calculated through indigenous ND were significantly lower than generated through non-indigenous norms. Conclusions: ND for minority populations are critical since Waranka sample performed worse when using non-indigenous norms for z-score calculation.

Background: Seeking and obtaining effective health care for Long COVID remains a challenge in the USA. Women have particularly been impacted, as they are both at higher risk of developing Long COVID and of facing gendered barriers to having symptoms acknowledged. Long COVID clinics, which provide multidisciplinary and coordinated care, have emerged as a potential solution. To date, however, there has been little examination of U.S. patient experiences with Long COVID clinics and how patients may or may not have come to access care at a Long COVID clinic., Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 U.S. women aged 18 or older who had experienced Long COVID symptoms for at least 3 months, who had not been hospitalized for acute COVID-19, and who had seen at least one medical provider about their symptoms. Participants were asked about experiences seeking medical care for Long COVID. Long COVID clinic-related responses were analyzed using qualitative framework analysis to identify key themes in experiences with Long COVID clinics., Results: Of the 30 women, 43.3% (n = 13) had been seen at a Long COVID clinic or by a provider affiliated with a Long COVID clinic and 30.0% (n = 9) had explored or attempted to see a Long COVID clinic but had not been seen at time of interview. Participants expressed five key themes concerning their experiences with seeking care from Long COVID clinics: (1) Access to clinics remains an issue, (2) Clinics are not a one stop shop, (3) Not all clinic providers have sufficient Long COVID knowledge, (4) Clinics can offer validation and care, and (5) Treatment options are critical and urgent., Conclusions: While the potential for Long COVID clinics is significant, findings indicate that ongoing barriers to care and challenges related to quality and coordination of care hamper that potential and contribute to distress among women seeking Long COVID care. Since Long COVID clinics are uniquely positioned and framed as being the place to go to manage complex symptoms, it is critical to patient wellbeing that they be properly resourced to provide a level of care that complies with emerging best practices., (© 2024. This study developed and validated the Telepsychology Facilitators Scale (TFS), a novel measure that uses the theory of reasoned action and technology acceptance model as frameworks to assess factors that influence psychologists' openness to using telepsychology. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, an online sample of 2,619 psychologists completed initial items considered for the TFS, along with a measure assessing their actual use of telepsychology. The sample was split in half, with a preliminary exploratory factor analysis ultimately revealing a 13-item general scale with four distinct subscales (Positive Attitudes, Facilitating Infrastructure, Organizational Support, and External Policies). Higher scores on each subscale positively correlated with psychologists' percentage of patient treatment conducted with telepsychology. The exploratory factor analysis subscale structure was subsequently supported via confirmatory factory analyses of a four-factor structure and bifactor structure (tested separately) with the other half of the sample, revealing adequate model fit for both models and similar convergent validity. The TFS may help the field assess the potential barriers and drivers of telepsychology use among psychologists and be used to inform future organizational and policy efforts to increase telepsychology implementation and use across health service settings. Objective: To describe the needs for subacute inpatient rehabilitation and community-based healthcare services, rehabilitation, and social support in patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic injury in the first 6 months post-injury. Further, to explore associations between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and unmet needs., Design: Multicentre prospective cohort study., Subjects: Of 601 persons (75% males), mean (standard deviation) age 47 (21) years, admitted to trauma centres in 2020 with moderate-to-severe injury, 501 patients responded at the 6-month follow-up and thus were included in the analyses., Methods: Sociodemographic and injury-related characteristics were recorded at inclusion. Estimation of needs was assessed with the Rehabilitation Complexity Scale Extended-Trauma and the Needs and Provision Complexity Scale on hospital discharge. Provision of services was recorded 6 months post-injury. Multivariable logistic regressions explored associations between baseline variables and unmet inpatient rehabilitation and community-based service needs., Results: In total, 20% exhibited unmet needs for subacute inpatient rehabilitation, compared with 60% for community-based services. Predictors for unmet community-based service needs included residing in less central areas, profound injury severity, severe head injury, and rehabilitation referral before returning home., Conclusion: Inadequate provision of healthcare and rehabilitation services, particularly in the municipalities, resulted in substantial unmet needs in the first 6 months following injury.

Rationale: Direct exposure to gender identity-related discrimination and erasure among the transgender and gender independent (TGI) population are associated with healthcare underutilization, which may further exacerbate the health disparities that exist between this population and cisgender individuals in the United States (U.S.). Although the impacts of direct exposure to healthcare discrimination and erasure may have on TGI individuals are known, exposure to such harm vicariously (i.e., through observation or report) is underexplored., Objective: The present study examined the relationships among direct and vicarious gender identity-related healthcare discrimination and erasure exposure and past-year healthcare utilization., Method: Gender identity-based mistrust in healthcare was also assessed, as a mechanism through which direct and vicarious gender identity-related healthcare discrimination and erasure predict healthcare utilization behaviors among a sample (N = 385) of TGI adults in the U.S., aged 18 to 71 recruited online., Results: Results indicated direct lifetime and vicarious healthcare discrimination and erasure exposure significantly predicted past-year healthcare underutilization when participants anticipated encountering gender identity-related healthcare discrimination. Mediational analyses indicated that higher levels of exposure to direct lifetime and vicarious healthcare discrimination and erasure were related to higher levels of mistrust in healthcare, through which past-year underutilization was significantly related., Conclusions: These findings are vital to informing healthcare practice and policy initiatives aimed at ensuring the barriers that deleteriously influence the accessibility of healthcare among TGI individuals are ameliorated., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: This study compared rates of suicide attempt (SA) and suicidal ideation (SI) during the first 5 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI) among veterans and service members (V/SMs) in the Veterans Affairs (VA) and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) Model Systems National Databases to each other and to non-veterans (non-Vs) in the NIDILRR database., Setting: Twenty-one NIDILRR and 5 VA TBI Model Systems (TBIMS) inpatient rehabilitation facilities in the United States., Participants: Participants with TBI were discharged from rehabilitation alive, had a known military status recorded (either non-V or history of military service), and successful 1-, 2-, and/or 5-year follow-up interviews completed between 2009 and 2021. The year 1 cohort included 8737 unique participants (8347 with SA data and 3987 with SI data); the year 2 (7628 participants) and year 5 (4837 participants) cohorts both had similar demographic characteristics to the year 1 cohort., Design: Longitudinal design with data collected across TBIMS centers at 1, 2, and 5 years post-injury., Main Outcomes and Measures: History of SA in past year and SI in past 2 weeks assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Patient demographics, injury characteristics, and rehabilitation outcomes were also assessed., Results: Full sample rates of SA were 1.9%, 1.5%, and 1.6%, and rates of SI were 9.6%, 10.1%, and 8.7% (respectively at years 1, 2, and 5). There were significant differences among groups based on demographic, injury-related, mental/behavioral health, and functional outcome variables. Objective: To quantify the evolution, impact, and importance of normative data (ND) calculation by identifying trends in the research literature and what approaches need improvement., Methods: A PRISMA-guideline systematic review was performed on literature from 2000 to 2022 in PubMed, Pub-Psych, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria included scientific articles about ND in neuropsychological tests with clear data analysis, published in any country, and written in English or Spanish. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were included. Bibliometric analysis was used to examine the growth, productivity, journal dispersion, and impact of the topic. VOSViewer compared keyword co-occurrence networks between 1952-1999 and 2000-2022., Results: Four hundred twelve articles met inclusion and exclusion criteria. The most studied predictors were age, education, and sex. There were a greater number of studies/projects focusing on adults than children. The Verbal Fluency Test (12.7%) was the most studied test, and the most frequently used variable selection strategy was linear regression (49.5%). Regression-based approaches were widely used, whereas the traditional approach was still used. ND were presented mostly in percentiles (44.2%). Bibliometrics showed exponential growth in publications. Three journals (2.41%) were in the Core Zone. VOSViewer results showed small nodes, long distances, and four ND-related topics from 1952 to 1999, and there were larger nodes with short connections from 2000 to 2022, indicating topic spread., Conclusions: Future studies should be conducted on children's ND, and alternative statistical methods should be used over the widely used regression approaches to address limitations and support growth of the field., (© The Author(s) 2023. Introduction: A better understanding of how to promote disease mitigation and prevention behaviors among vulnerable populations, such as cancer survivors, is needed. This study aimed to determine patterns of and factors associated with COVID-19-related preventive behaviors among cancer survivors and assess whether the COVID-19 preventive behaviors of cancer survivors differ from the general population., Methods: In June 2020, an online survey of adults (N = 897) assessed predictors of COVID-19-related preventive behaviors, including socio-demographics, COVID-19 beliefs and perceptions (Health Belief Model [HBM] variables), and cancer statuses (cancer survivors currently in treatment, cancer survivors not currently in treatment, and individuals with no history of cancer). An average score of respondent engagement in eight preventive behaviors was calculated. Differences in HBM variables and preventive behaviors by cancer status were assessed using ANCOVAs. Hierarchical multiple regression analyzed associations among socio-demographics, HBM constructs, cancer statuses, and engagement in COVID-19 preventive behaviors., Results: Participants reported engaging in 3.5 (SD = 0.6) preventive behaviors. Cancer survivors not in treatment engaged in preventive behaviors significantly less than the comparison group. In the final adjusted model, after adding COVID-19 beliefs and perceptions, cancer status was no longer significant. All HBM constructs except perceived susceptibility were significant predictors of preventive behaviors., Conclusions: COVID-19 beliefs and perceptions were more robust predictors preventive behaviors than cancer status. Purpose/objective: The aim of this article is to evaluate the measurement invariance (MI) of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in a sample of individuals during the first 2 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI). MI was examined among racial/ethnic groups and over time to determine the utility of the PHQ-9 across these dimensions., Research Method/design: In total, N = 3,227 (20% of the total sample) at 1 year and N = 3,153 (19% of the total sample) at 2 years were included for cross-sectional analyses. For the longitudinal analyses, participants with the PHQ-9 at both time points ( N = 2,234; 14% of the total study sample) were included., Results: Results were that the PHQ-9 is fully invariant and maintains its unidimensional factorial structure across racial/ethnic groups during the first 2 years after TBI, suggesting the scale measures the same construct equally well for participants from each group., Conclusion/implications: Based on these results, clinicians should feel confident using the PHQ-9 with diverse TBI patient populations, and researchers can reliably and validly employ it in TBI studies across racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Given the high rates of depression among individuals after TBI and its negative impact on their lives, this instrument will continue to be a key tool to measure the prognosis and success of rehabilitation programs. Purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments in motor and cognitive function and reduced life satisfaction. TBI is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and disproportionately affects Native Americans, who have the highest rates of TBI among all races in the United States and elevated likelihood for fatality and severe complications. This study investigated whether disparities in functional and life satisfaction outcomes exist longitudinally over the 5 years after complicated mild, moderate, or severe TBI between Native Americans and White individuals; it further explored which demographic and injury-related covariates account for them., Research Method: The current study used a subsample of the national TBI Model Systems Database of 80 demographically and injury-severity matched Native American and White pairs (total n = 160)., Results: A series of longitudinal hierarchical linear models found that Native Americans experienced significantly lower Functional Independence Measure Cognitive and Motor trajectories than Whites; however, life satisfaction was comparable. Native Americans had declining cognitive function over time relative to a slight increase in White individuals. This differential movement dissipated with the addition of employment status at the time of injury and type of health insurance., Conclusions: These results demonstrate a profound need to further investigate the cultural and contextual variables unique to Native Americans that underlie these differences and highlight the importance of culturally responsive treatment and rehabilitation in bridging the gap in recovery. The U.S. military veteran population experiences elevated rates of suicide relative to demographically matched community samples. Understanding suicide risk factors in veterans is therefore of critical importance. Accordingly, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has implemented elevated vigilance for suicidal ideation in its health care. One potential risk factor for suicidal ideation or behavior may be attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is frequently characterized by impaired impulse control and experience of intense emotions. To determine whether ADHD, as diagnosed by VHA assessment, may represent an independent or interactive risk factor for suicidal ideation or suicide attempt, we examined potential linkages between VHA-assessed symptomatology of ADHD and suicide attempts or ideation, either with or without the presence of comorbid VHA-assessed psychiatric symptomatology. In a retrospective chart review, we compared severity of clinician-rated suicide risk in 342 veterans (82.5% male) referred to a VHA medical center for ADHD assessment, of whom 198 were diagnosed with ADHD. Contrary to our preregistered hypotheses, there were no main or additive effects of ADHD in terms of increased suicidal ideation, clinician-rated suicide risk or in incidence of lifetime suicide attempt. Motoric impulsivity in neurocognitive testing also showed no relationship with suicide risk or attempts. Rather, consistent with previous literature, presence of a mood disorder or other non-ADHD psychopathology was linked to suicide risk ratings and attempts, irrespective of presence of ADHD symptoms. These data suggest that once comorbid symptomatology such as depression is controlled for, ADHD alone is not associated with elevated suicidal ideation or attempts in veterans. The study's aim was to examine alcohol consumption patterns and predictors of consumption across time among Hispanics with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the U.S. within ten years post-injury. This longitudinal cohort study included 1342 Hispanic individuals (77.6% males) from the multi-site, longitudinal TBI Model Systems (TBIMS) database. The main outcome measures were consumption information, demographic, and injury characteristics. Across the full sample, alcohol consumption variables generally demonstrated quadratic movement characterized by an initial increase followed by a plateau or slight decrease over the ten years post-injury. The predictors of higher consumption were being men, single, with a history of excessive alcohol use, with a nonviolent mechanism of injury, shorter duration of PTA, and higher levels of education. Participants had a greater number of 5+ drinks/episode occurrences in the past month if they were men and had had a greater number of 5+ drinks/episode occurrences in the month before injury. There was no differential change in alcohol consumption over time as a function of these predictors. This study identified a profile of at-risk Hispanics with TBI for increased alcohol consumption. These individuals should be identified and targeted for early evidence-based alcohol intervention after TBI when results might be most favorable.

Background: Hispanics/Latinos are the largest racial/ethnic group among underrepresented populations in the U.S. and multiple sociodemographic, cultural, and linguistic factors have been found to impact their performances on cognitive testing. Despite this, few normative data are available for the heterogeneous Spanish-speaking population in the U.S., Objective: To generate normative data on the Trail-Making Test (TMT), Bells Test, Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and the Brief Test of Attention (BTA) for Spanish speakers residing in the U.S., Methods: The sample included 245 Spanish-speaking individuals aged 18- 80 from eight states across the U.S. (California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin). Participants were administered attention and processing speed measures as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. We used a Bayesian regression approach to estimate normative data, including covariates found to be important for predicting performances on measures of attention and processing speed., Results: Sociodemographic factors including education, time in the U.S., acculturation, age, and/or sex had differential effects on the TMT-A, TMT-B, SDMT, and the BTA whereas the Bells Test was not influenced by any of these sociodemographic factors., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that while sex, age, and educational attainment are important factors to consider, language and acculturation can also influence attention and processing speed performances among Spanish speakers in the U.S.

Assessing cognition in this group is complex as cultural and linguistic factors have been found to affect test performance., Objective: To generate normative data on the World Health Organization-University of California Los Angeles Auditory Verbal Learning Test (WHO-UCLA AVLT) in a sample of Spanish-speaking Hispanics residing in the U.S., Methods: The sample included 245 Spanish-speaking individuals aged 18-80 across the U.S. (California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin). Participants were administered the WHO-UCLA AVLT as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. A Bayesian regression approach was used to estimate normative data, including covariates found to be important for predicting performances on measures of learning and memory., Results: Bayesian models showed a logarithmic link between education and all WHO-UCLA AVLT trials, except recognition. For delayed recall, increased Spanish proficiency benefited women's performance exclusively. Time in the U.S. was a significant predictor for total recall, indicating worse performance with longer residency., Conclusion: Recognizing cultural factors like language proficiency and duration of U.S. residence is essential for accurately evaluating cognitive function among Spanish-speaking Hispanics. This research emphasizes the importance of accounting for cultural nuances in developing norms for neuropsychological assessments, thereby improving their relevance and effectiveness in diverse communities.

Background: The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT) and the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) are commonly used in clinical practice. The ROCFT measures constructional praxis, visual perception, and visuospatial learning and memory, and the CDT assesses for visuospatial, constructional, and executive difficulties. Several neurological disorders are associated with visuospatial and visuo-constructional impairments, yet reliable normative data accounting for sociodemographic and acculturative variables are scarce for Hispanics living in the U.S., Objective: To generate normative data for the ROCFT and CDT in a Spanish-speaking adult population living in the U.S., Methods: The sample consisted of 245 cognitively healthy adults recruited from several states in the U.S. Each participant was administered the ROCFT and CDT as part of a larger cognitive battery. The ROCFT and CDT were normed using a Bayesian approach. Age, age2, education, sex, acculturation, and language proficiency were included as predictors in the analyses., Results: ROCFT performance was associated with education and age, particularly as they interacted with Spanish language proficiency and time spent in the U.S. Education was significantly associated with recall abilities and a lower memory recall on the ROCFT. Age was found to vary depending on a person's bilingual abilities. Sex did not emerge as a predictor of performance, and it did not interact significantly with other variables., Conclusion: This is the first study to include acculturation and language proficiency variables in the creation of norms for the assessment of visuo-constructional abilities. This study will have a large impact on the practice of neuropsychology in the U.S.

Background: Hispanics are the largest growing ethnic minority group in the U.S. Despite significant progress in providing norms for this population, updated normative data are essential., Objective: To present the methodology for a study generating normative neuropsychological test data for Spanish-speaking adults living in the U.S. using Bayesian inference as a novel approach., Methods: The sample consisted of 253 healthy adults from eight U.S. regions, with individuals originating from a diverse array of Latin American countries. To participate, individuals must have met the following criteria: were between 18 and 80 years of age, had lived in the U.S. for at least 1 year, self-identified Spanish as their dominant language, had at least one year of formal education, were able to read and write in Spanish at the time of evaluation, scored≥23 on the Mini-Mental State Examination, <10 on the Patient Health Questionnaire- 9, and <10 on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale. Participants completed 12 neuropsychological tests. Reliability statistics and norms were calculated for all tests., Conclusion: This is the first normative study for Spanish-speaking adults in the U.S. that uses Bayesian linear or generalized linear regression models for generating norms in neuropsychology, implementing sociocultural measures as possible covariates.

Background: The Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) is a widely used performance validity measure that is available in both English and Spanish. The Spanish version, however, has historically lacked normative data from samples that are representative of the U.S. Hispanic/Spanish speaking population., Objective: The aim of the current study was to collect normative data on the update TOMM 2 for Hispanic individuals residing in the U.S., Methods: Normative data on the TOMM 2 was collected across 9 sites from different regions of the U.S. The total sample consisted of n = 188 cognitively healthy adults aged 18 and over with no current or prior history of neurological or psychiatric disorder. Descriptive analyses were performed on total raw scores., Results: Participants obtained a mean score of 48.15 (SD = 2.81) on trial 1 of the TOMM 2, 49.86 (SD = 0.487) on trial 2, and 49.84 (SD = 0.509) on the recognition trial. Scores are provided for traditional cutoff scores as well as some popular cutoffs reported in the literature. Item level analyses were conducted as well as evaluation of performance based on a variety of demographics., Conclusion: When compared to the English-speaking normative sample used for the original TOMM, this sample demonstrated better performance on the TOMM 2 indicating better cultural appropriateness of the items. This is the first study conducted that provides culturally appropriate descriptive norms for use with Spanish speakers living in the U.S.

Background: Normative data for Spanish-speaking populations, particularly Hispanics in the U.S., is notably scarce., Objective: This study aims to establish normative data for executive function tests (Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Stroop Color and Word Test) among Spanish-speaking Hispanics in the U.S., Methods: We assessed 245 individuals aged 18-80 from eight U.S. states (California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin) and employed Bayesian regression to estimate norms, considering various sociodemographic factors influencing performance., Results: The posterior distribution suggests a high probability that age impacts SCWT performance, with older adults likely to show greater declines, particularly among those with high proficiency in Spanish. The posterior distribution suggests a stronger effect of age on M-WCST performance among individuals with longer U.S. residency. Educational attainment demonstrates a robust positive impact on M-WCST outcomes, with lower levels of education associated with a higher probability of increased errors. An interaction between education and Spanish proficiency was observed, influencing SCWT scores differently across proficiency levels. Sex and acculturation levels interact to affect SCWT performance, with distinct patterns observed between men and women. This suggests that the impact of acculturation on cognitive test performance may vary by gender., Conclusion: Establishing culturally sensitive normative data can enhance accurate identification of executive dysfunction and reduce misdiagnosis risks. This study underscores the importance of considering sociocultural factors including acculturation and language proficiency in neuropsychological assessments to better serve diverse populations.

Background: Linguistic deficits are common across neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. Currently there are limited neuropsychological norms available for Spanish-speaking adults residing in the U.S., Objective: To generate norms for two verbal fluency tests and the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in a Spanish-speaking population in the U.S., with adjustments for demographic and cultural variables., Methods: The sample consisted of 245 adults from the U.S. Participants completed phonological and semantic verbal fluency tests and the BNT. A standardized four-step statistical procedure was used., Results: For the phoneme F, interactions between Spanish proficiency, age, and education arose. Better performance on phonemes A, S, and M was related to education. Spanish proficiency, acculturation, and time in the U.S. were associated with the phonemes S, A, P, M, and R. An age by education interaction was found for phonemes M and R. The FAS and PMR triads were related to age, sex, time in U.S., and Spanish proficiency. For the semantic verbal fluency tests, an interaction between education and Spanish proficiency arose. For the BNT, test scores were related to education, and significant interactions were also found based on education's interaction with Spanish proficiency and acculturation., Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of accounting for sociodemographic and acculturative factors when developing normative data for verbal fluency tests and the BNT for dominant Spanish-speaking adults in the U.S. These sociodemographically-adjusted norms will help improve accuracy of diagnosis and interpretation of linguistic test performance in Spanish speakers living in the U.S.

Background: Sexual changes are an area of primary concern for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their partners, but the topic has gone largely unexplored in the research literature., Objectives: This study examined how individuals with SCI in Latin America experience their sexuality and what issues they and their partners face in this area., Methods: A total of 248 individuals with SCI from Latin America completed an online 60-item survey regarding sexuality., Results: The majority of participants (87.7%) reported that they had noticed changes in sexuality after the injury, mainly physical problems (50.7%), emotional problems (38.7%), and changes in relationships with partners (27.5%). Regarding sexual desire, 47.2% indicated that desire remained the same after SCI. The majority of participants (81.9%) indicated not having received any information about sexuality after SCI during their hospital stay but reported that they would have liked to have received information (98.1%). Of all participants, 66.1% reported never having been asked about problems or difficulties in their sexual life after SCI by any health professional., Conclusion: Interventions designed to educate individuals with SCI regarding the effect of injury on their sexual functioning, responsiveness, and expression, as well as to support them in maintaining and enhancing their sexual well-being, may be extremely beneficial, particularly in Latin America. Objective: Although racial/ethnic disparities have been documented in numerous outcomes after traumatic brain injury (TBI), research has yet to explore differences in rehabilitation outcomes based upon nativity (foreign-born vs US-born individuals). The purpose of this study was to compare the functional outcomes over the first 10 years after TBI for individuals born in the United States with those who were foreign-born., Setting/participants: A sample of 10 695 individuals in the TBI Model Systems database with a coding for country of birth the United States ( n = 9435) versus other than the United States ( n = 1260) was used., Design/main Measures: Outcome measures at 1, 2, 5, and 10 years after TBI included the Motor and Cognitive subscales of the Functional Independence Measure and the Supervision Rating Scale., Results: Foreign-born individuals exhibited lower motor functional independence trajectories than those born in the United States, even after controlling for demographic and injury-related covariates. However, foreign-born individuals generally showed a stronger upward quadratic trajectory in motor functional independence with the greatest gains between the 5- and 10-year time points, whereas those born in the United States improved more quickly but then plateaued between the 5- and 10-year time points; these differential effects over time dissipated with the addition of demographic and injury-related covariates. Foreign-born individuals also exhibited lower cognitive functional independence trajectories, as well as greater supervision needs trajectories, than those born in the United States, even after controlling for demographic and injury-related covariates., Conclusion: These findings dovetail with literature suggesting that racially/ethnically diverse groups exhibit reduced functional independence after TBI. The findings may also suggest potential systematic barriers such as healthcare access and language barriers that may influence the frequency, rate, and quality of care received. Objective: The construct of participation after traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be difficult to operationalize. Psychometric network analysis offers an empirical approach to visualizing and quantifying the associations between activities that comprise participation, elucidating the relations among the construct's components without assuming the presence of a latent common cause and generating a model to inform future measurement methods. The current research applied psychometric network analysis to the Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools-Objective (PART-O) within a sample of service members and veterans (SM/Vs) with a history of TBI at 1 and 2 years ( T1 and T2 ) postinjury., Participants: Participants ( N = 663) were SM/Vs with a history of TBI who completed comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC)., Setting: Five VA PRCs., Design: Cross-sectional, retrospective analysis of data from the VA TBI Model Systems study., Main Measures: PART-O., Results: Network analysis demonstrated that the PART-O structure was generally consistent over time, but some differences emerged. The greatest difference observed was the association between "spending time with friends" and "giving emotional support" to others. This association was more than twice as strong at T2 as at T1 . The "out of the house" item was most central, as demonstrated by dense connections within its own subscale (Out and About) and items in other subscales (ie, Social Relations and Productivity). When examining items connecting the 3 subscales, the items related to giving emotional support, internet use, and getting out of the house emerged as the strongest connectors at T1 , and the internet was the strongest connector at T2 ., Conclusion: Providing emotional support to others is associated with greater participation across multiple domains and is an important indicator of recovery. Being out and about, internet use, and engagement in productive activities such as school and work shared strong associations with Social Relations. Postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum anxiety (PPA), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among birthing people have increased substantially, contributing to adverse maternal/infant dyad outcomes, with a high prevalence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Despite calls for trauma-informed care in the NICU and high rates of post-traumatic stress, little research has examined the rates of or the relationships between peripartum mood and adverse child experiences (ACEs) in NICU mothers or evaluated which peripartum traumas are most distressing. This study employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore whether peripartum-related traumas and NICU-related stressors mediated the associations between ACEs and mental health outcomes in 119 lower-income, racially diverse mothers in a Level IV NICU. Mental health concerns were prevalent and highly comorbid, including 51.3% PPA, 34.5% PPD, 39.5% post-traumatic stress, and 37% with ≥4 ACEs. The majority (53.8%) of mothers endorsed multiple peripartum traumas; NICU admission was the most common trauma (61%), followed by birth (19%), pregnancy (9%), and a medical event in the NICU (9%). Our SEMs had good fit and demonstrated that ACEs predicted peripartum distress. Trauma-informed care efforts should employ transdiagnostic approaches and recognize that women commonly present to the NICU with childhood trauma history and cumulative peripartum traumas.

Participation is of major importance for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study evaluates participation over a period of one year among persons with TBI in the chronic phase and explores sociodemographic, psychological, and environmental predictors of levels and trajectories of participation. One hundred and twenty home-living survivors of TBI with persistent injury-related consequences at least two years post-injury who participated in a goal-oriented randomized trial were assessed at baseline and after four and twelve months. Linear mixed-effects model analysis was applied to evaluate height, trajectory slope, and predictors of the Participation Assessment with the Recombined Tools-Objective (PART-O) total score and the subscales Productivity, Social Relations, and Being Out and About. Being married, having a higher education, and having good global functioning predicted more frequent participation. Education, executive- and global functions predicted Productivity, while age and being married predicted Social Relations. Participating in the study during the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on Productivity. Participation was relatively stable over 12 months, with a slight decline, but may be influenced by demographic factors and functional consequences. Rehabilitation services should particularly focus on people with TBI living alone with lower levels of global and executive function.

Purpose: To identify life satisfaction trajectories at 1-10 years post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) and examine which demographic and injury characteristics at the time of injury are associated with those trajectories., Methods: Participants included 1,051 Hispanic individuals from the multi-site, longitudinal TBI Model Systems (TBIMS) database. Individuals were enrolled after sustaining a TBI and while undergoing inpatient rehabilitation at a TBIMS site; they were included if they completed the Satisfaction with Life Scale during one or more follow-up data collections at 1, 2, 5, or 10 years after TBI., Results: A linear (straight-line) movement of life satisfaction trajectories was the best fit to the data. Across the overall sample, life satisfaction increased over time, with higher trajectories for Hispanic individuals who had been partnered at baseline, born outside the US and experienced a nonviolent injury cause. There were no significant interactions between time and any of these main effect predictors, suggesting no differential change over time in life satisfaction trajectories as a function of these characteristics., Conclusions: Results revealed increases in life satisfaction over time among Hispanic individuals with TBI and shed light on critical risks and protective factors that may inform targeted rehabilitation services with this underserved group.

Objective: Naming is commonly impaired in people with neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury, and as a result, its accurate assessment is essential. The aim of this study was to provide normative data for the 15-item Spanish version of the Boston Naming Test (BNT) for an adult population from eight Latin American countries/regions., Method: The total sample consisted of 2,828 participants from Argentina, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, Paraguay, and Puerto Rico. Multiple regressions were used to generate normative data following a four-step process., Results: Regression models showed a linear effect of age on the 15-item BNT total score for Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. In contrast, Paraguay showed a quadratic age effect. Almost all countries showed a positive linear effect of education, except Cuba which had a quadratic effect. Sex was a significant predictor in Argentina, Chile, Cuba, and Mexico, where in women scored lower than men., Conclusions: This study generates normative data for the 15-item Spanish version of the BNT and offers a free open-source calculator that will assist in the efficacious use of this neuropsychological test in clinical practice and research. Objective: To examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on societal participation in people with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI)., Design: Cross-sectional retrospective cohort., Setting: National TBI Model Systems centers, United States., Participants: TBI Model Systems enrollees (N=7003), ages 16 and older and 1-30 years postinjury, interviewed either prepandemic (PP) or during the pandemic (DP). The sample was primarily male (72.4%) and White (69.5%), with motor vehicle collisions as the most common cause of injury (55.1%)., Interventions: Not applicable., Main Outcome Measure: The 3 subscales of the Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools-Objective: Out and About (community involvement), Productivity, and Social Relations., Results: Out and About, but not Productivity or Social Relations, scores were appreciably lower among DP participants compared to PP participants (medium effect). Demographic and clinical characteristics showed similar patterns of association with participation domains across PP and DP. When their unique contributions were examined in regression models, age, self-identified race, education level, employment status, marital status, income level, disability severity, and life satisfaction were variably predictive of participation domains, though most effects were small or medium in size. Depression and anxiety symptom severities each showed small zero-order correlations with participation domains across PP and DP but had negligible effects in regression analyses., Conclusions: Consistent with the effect of COVID-19 on participation levels in the general population, people with TBI reported less community involvement during the pandemic, potentially compounding existing postinjury challenges to societal integration. The pandemic does not appear to have altered patterns of association between demographic/clinical characteristics and participation. Assessing and addressing barriers to community involvement should be a priority for TBI treatment providers. Background: Cancer survivors are at greater risk for COVID-19 complications, emphasizing the importance of adherence to COVID-19 prevention. Active coping mechanisms can help manage pandemic stress but disengaged coping practices can have adverse effects., Objectives: 1) Identify differences in COVID-19 coping styles and COVID-19 preventive behaviors among cancer survivors in active treatment, survivors not in treatment, and a comparison group without a cancer history. 2) Exploring variables that may predict adherence to COVID-19 preventative behaviors., Patient Involvement & Methods: This study used an online survey among two categories of cancer survivors - one group in active treatment and one group no longer in treatment - and one group without a cancer history (N = 897 total)., Results and Discussion: Cancer survivors in treatment were more likely to utilize both active and disengaged coping (p < .001). This could indicate that the additional COVID-19 strain is making survivors more likely to engage in coping in any way possible. Cancer survivors not in treatment were less likely to report intent to carry out COVID- 19 preventative behaviors compared to the comparison group (p = .009). Background: Older adults who sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been shown to have reduced functional independence and life satisfaction relative to younger individuals with TBI. The purpose of this study was to examine the covarying patterns of functional independence and life satisfaction over the 10 years after TBI in adults who were 60 years of age or older upon injury., Method: Participants were 1841 individuals aged 60 or older at the time of TBI, were enrolled in the longitudinal TBI Model Systems database, and had Functional Independence Measure and Satisfaction with Life Scale scores during at least one time point at 1, 2, 5, and 10 years after TBI., Results: A k -means cluster analysis identified four distinct group-based longitudinal patterns of these two variables. Three cluster groups suggested that functional independence and life satisfaction generally traveled together over time, with one group showing relatively high functional independence and life satisfaction over time (Cluster 2), one group showing relatively moderate functional independence and life satisfaction (Cluster 4), and one group showing relatively low functional independence and life satisfaction (Cluster 1). Cluster 3 had relatively high functional independence over time but, nonetheless, relatively low life satisfaction; they were also the youngest group upon injury. Participants in Cluster 2 generally had the highest number of weeks of paid competitive employment but lower percentages of underrepresented racial/ethnic minority participants, particularly Black and Hispanic individuals. Women were more likely to be in the cluster with the lowest life satisfaction and functional independence (Cluster 1)., Conclusion: Functional independence and life satisfaction generally accompany one another over time in older adults, although this does not always occur, as life satisfaction can still be low in a subgroup of older individuals after TBI with higher functioning. These findings contribute to a better understanding of post-TBI recovery patterns in older adults over time that may inform treatment considerations to improve age-related discrepancies in rehabilitation outcomes.

Aim: The COVID-19 outbreak escalated into a global pandemic, pushing many governments around the world to impose measures affecting all aspects of life. Similar to other countries, Greece adopted social restriction, lockdowns, and quarantines to reduce transmission from person-to-person. This cross-sectional study investigated the association between social restriction measures, an mental health and coping strategies employed by a Greek adult sample., Subject and Methods: An online questionnaire was used to collect data during the second national lockdown (February to May 2021). A total of 650 participants ( M age 33.13, 71.5% female) comprised the final sample., Results: The results show 21.3% of respondents reported moderate-to-extremely severe anxiety, 33% moderate-to-extremely severe depression, 31.8% moderate-to-severe stress, and 38% clinically significant trauma-related distress. Hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that the strongest contributors to adverse mental health outcomes were being female, of younger age, experiencing increases in verbal arguments at home, being separated from family and close friends, and being unable to afford enough or healthy food. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the delivery of psychological services as many psychologists adopted telepsychology for the first time or dramatically increased their use of it. The current study examined qualitative and quantitative data provided by 2619 practicing psychologists to identify variables facilitating and impeding the adoption of telepsychology in the U.S. at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The top five reported barriers were: inadequate access to technology, diminished therapeutic alliance, technological issues, diminished quality of delivered care or effectiveness, and privacy concerns. The top five reported facilitators were: increased safety, better access to patient care, patient demand, efficient use of time, and adequate technology for telepsychology use. Psychologists' demographic and practice characteristics robustly predicted their endorsement of telepsychology barriers and facilitators. These findings provide important context into the implementation of telepsychology at the beginning of the pandemic and may serve future implementation strategies in clinics and healthcare organizations attempting to increase telepsychology utilization.

Objective: This study examined demographic and injury-related predictors of cognitive and motor functional independence in Hispanics with traumatic brain injury at years 1, 2, 5, and 10 after hospital discharge., Design: Hispanic participants ( n = 1360) from the TBI Model Systems Study were included if they had at least one Functional Independence Measure (FIM) Cognitive and Motor score at any time point (years 1, 2, 5, or 10). Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine baseline predictors of FIM Cognitive and Motor trajectories across this period., Results: FIM Cognitive trajectories showed a quadratic movement (initial increase followed by a plateau or slight decrease), whereas FIM Motor trajectories showed a cubic movement (initial increase, followed by a plateau, then another increase). Higher FIM Cognitive trajectories were predicted by younger age, shorter length of posttraumatic amnesia, higher education, and having experienced a nonviolent mechanism of injury. Objective: To examine the prevalence, severity, and correlates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) assessed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: Retrospective cohort study using data collected through the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) network at 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years post TBI., Setting: United States-based TBIMS rehabilitation centers with telephone assessment of community residing participants., Participants: Adults (72.4% male; mean age, 47.2 years) who enrolled in the TBIMS National Database and completed mental health questionnaires prepandemic (January 1, 2017 to February 29, 2020; n=5000) or during pandemic (April 1, 2022 to June 30, 2021; n=2009) (N=7009)., Interventions: Not applicable., Main Outcome Measures: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire., Results: Separate linear and logistic regressions were constructed with demographic, psychosocial, injury-related, and functional characteristics, along with a binary indicator of COVID-19 pandemic period (prepandemic vs during pandemic), as predictors of mental health outcomes. No meaningful differences in depression, anxiety, or suicidal ideation were observed before vs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Correlations between predictors and mental health outcomes were similar before and during the pandemic., Conclusions: Contrary to our predictions, the prevalence, severity, and correlates of mental health conditions were similar before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results may reflect generalized resilience and are consistent with the most recent findings from the general population that indicate only small, transient increases in psychological distress associated with the pandemic. People's risk perception of COVID-19 is an important predictor for adopting protective behavior. Although risk perceptions, and factors influencing these, may vary between countries, less attention has been paid to differences between adjacent regions from neighboring countries. In the midst of the first wave of the corona outbreak (March-April-May 2020), we measured risk perceptions as perceived threat (consisting of perceived severity and susceptibility) among university students (N = 668) in two connected countries: the Netherlands and Belgium. Theory-based predictor variables included experiential, efficacy-related, socio-cultural, cognitive, and demographic factors. While demographic variables and country were not significant predictors of perceived threat level, all other constructs were. Personal and indirect experiences with COVID-19, as well as higher scores on personal (self) efficacy to carry out recommended preventive behaviors were all associated with higher perceived threat. However, low collective efficacy and lower levels of trust in government were both also significantly associated with higher perceived threat, as was a low level of "lack of COVID-19 knowledge". Objective: The aim of the study was to predict suicidal ideation 1 yr after moderate to severe traumatic brain injury., Design: This study used a cross-sectional design with data collected through the prospective, longitudinal Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems network at hospitalization and 1 yr after injury. Participants who completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 suicide item at year 1 follow-up ( N = 4328) were included., Results: A gradient boosting machine algorithm demonstrated the best performance in predicting suicidal ideation 1 yr after traumatic brain injury. Predictors were Patient Health Questionnaire-9 items (except suicidality), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 items, and a measure of heavy drinking. Results of the 10-fold cross-validation gradient boosting machine analysis indicated excellent classification performance with an area under the curve of 0.882. Sensitivity was 0.85 and specificity was 0.77. Accuracy was 0.78 (95% confidence interval, 0.77-0.79). Feature importance analyses revealed that depressed mood and guilt were the most important predictors of suicidal ideation, followed by anhedonia, concentration difficulties, and psychomotor disturbance., Conclusions: Overall, depression symptoms were most predictive of suicidal ideation.
