Abstract INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an important zoonosis in Brazil. Previous identification of parasitized dogs can also help prevent the disease in humans, even in non-endemic areas of the country. The Brazilian Ministry of Health recommends diagnosis in dogs using a DPP® (rapid test) as a screening test and an immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA) as a confirmatory test (DPP®+ELISA), and culling infected dogs as a legal control measure. However, the accuracy of these serological tests has been questioned. METHODS: VL in dogs was investigated in a non-endemic area of the São Paulo state for three consecutive years, and the performances of different diagnostic tests were compared. RESULTS: A total of 331 dog samples were collected in 2015, 373 in 2016, and 347 in 2017. The seroprevalence by DPP®+ELISA was 3.3, 3.2, and 0.3%, respectively, and by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), it was 3.0, 5.6, and 5.5%, respectively. ELISA confirmed 18.4% of DPP® positive samples. The concordance between the IFA and DPP® was 83.9%. The concordance between IFA and DPP®+ELISA was 92.9%. A molecular diagnostic test (PCR) was performed in 63.2% of the seropositive samples, all of which were negative. CONCLUSIONS: In non-endemic areas, diagnostic tests in dogs should be carefully evaluated to avoid false results.

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite of worldwide distribution that can infect several species of homeothermic animals. Few studies have evaluated the exposure of captive wild animals to T. gondii. This study involved a serological survey of anti-T. gondii antibodies in mammals kept in Cuba’s National Zoo (PZN) and in the Rio de Janeiro Zoo (RIOZOO) in Brazil. The study consisted of a total of 231 serum samples from mammals, 108 from PZN and 123 from RIOZOO. All the samples were subjected to IgG anti-T. gondii testing by means of the inhibition ELISA method and the modified agglutination test, respectively. T. gondii antibodies were detected in 85.2% samples from PZN and 32.5% samples from RIOZOO. At the PZN, Perissodactyla (92.3%) was the order with the highest serological prevalence rate, whereas at the RIOZOO, the order Primates (46.7%) stood out (p

The main objective of this study is to assess how cognitive styles promote individual entrepreneurial orientation (IOE) and intrapreneurship and how they drive innovation among nurses in the healthcare services in Portugal. A total of 667 nurses participated, by completing an online questionnaire in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, working in different health units in Portugal. PLS-SEM structural equation modelling was used as a data analysis technique. The results show that cognitive styles have a positive influence on nurses’ IOE; that cognitive styles have a positive influence on intrapreneurship, which is mediated by the IO; that the IOE impacts nurses’ intrapreneurship and innovation, which is mediated by intrapreneurship; and that intrapreneurship impacts nurses’ innovation. The originality of this study lies in the absence of studies showing relationships between the dimensions that we propose to analyze during the pandemic of COVID-19.

In recent years, women have been gaining more space in the labor market due to their higher level of education, especially university teachers. For them, balancing work and personal life becomes a recurring challenge because of the work overload that these women face. Hence, there is a need to develop specific competences for college teaching, which reflects the particularities and the various demands of this profession. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyze how married and divorced teachers seek to reconcile the relationship between work and family, and the teaching competences that they have been acquired over their career. For this, a research was conducted with nine teachers who make up the framework of the Postgraduate Programs in Administration and Accounting of the Federal University of Uberlandia, applying the Narratives of Life method. It found that, although in the education sector there is greater participation and acceptance of the female figure, many changes are still necessary for society to achieve a gender equity situation. About family life, it was observed that they experienced charging for care, rooted in the sexual division of labor. Regarding the development of teaching competences, master and doctorate were identified as responsible for the development of competences related to research. Courses focusing on educational aspects and experience in teaching were also identified as prevalent for the internalization of teaching competences.

Dicamba is a post-emergence herbicide commonly used to control broadleaves in cereal crops. However, a portion of the herbicide might reach soil surface, and many factors could affect its dynamics and effects. The objective of this research was to evaluate the dynamics of dicamba applied to the soil, to the soil and covered with straw and over the straw, in addition, to evaluate the weed control in pre-emergence. Two field experiments at different locations were conducted with dicamba. To quantify dicamba in the soil a LC-MS/MS system was used. In both experiments, rainfall and straw played a key role in dicamba soil dynamics and weed control. Dicamba in the soil was affected by presence of straw and accumulated rainfall after the application. Higher concentrations (254-432 ng g soil

In the present study, the therapeutic efficacy of a selective BKCa channel opener (compound X) in the treatment of monocrotaline (MCT)-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) was investigated. PAH was induced in male Wistar rats by a single injection of MCT. After two weeks, the MCT-treated group was divided into two groups that were either treated with compound X or vehicle. Compound X was administered daily at 28 mg/kg. Electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, and haemodynamic analyses were performed; ex vivo evaluations of pulmonary artery reactivity, right ventricle (RV) and lung histology as well as expression levels of α and β myosin heavy chain, brain natriuretic peptide, and cytokines (TNFα and IL10) in heart tissue were performed. Pulmonary artery rings of the PAH group showed a lower vasodilatation response to acetylcholine, suggesting endothelial dysfunction. Compound X promoted strong vasodilation in pulmonary artery rings of both control and MCT-induced PAH rats. The untreated hypertensive rats presented remodelling of pulmonary arterioles associated with increased resistance to pulmonary flow; increased systolic pressure, hypertrophy and fibrosis of the RV; prolongation of the QT and Tpeak-Tend intervals (evaluated during electrocardiogram); increased lung and liver weights; and autonomic imbalance with predominance of sympathetic activity. On the other hand, treatment with compound X reduced pulmonary vascular remodelling, pulmonary flow resistance and RV hypertrophy and afterload. The use of a selective and potent opener to activate the BKCa channels promoted improvement of haemodynamic parameters and consequent prevention of RV maladaptive remodelling in rats with MCT-induced PAH.

Green cane harvesting is a new agricultural practice that provides many benefits to sugar cane production in Brazil by allowing cane straw to remain on the soil surface. However, this system has complicated the management of weeds, pests and diseases. This review will highlight the impact of green cane harvesting on the management of weeds, insect pests, and pathogens in sugar cane production, and cover novel techniques and practices used to manage pests in this production system. Brazil has a unique agroecosystem that includes tropical and subtropical climates and distinct technical challenges relative to other agricultural regions around the world. Sugarcane stands out as an economically important crop in Brazilian agriculture, both in terms of its planting area and the complexity of the production system (e.g., constant changes in planting, cultural practices, and harvest managements). Brazilian sugarcane production in the 2018/2019 season was 620.44 million tons produced over more than 8.5 million hectares distributed mainly in the states of São Paulo, Goiás, and Minas Gerais. Currently, 38% of this production is intended to produce sugar and 62% to ethanol, generating 29.04 million tons of sugar and 33.14 billion liters of ethanol, making Brazil the largest sugar and ethanol producing country in the world. The sugarcane agroindustry continues to expand in Brazil, showing a great capacity to aggregate value to byproducts of ethanol and sugar, such as vinasse (fertilizer), filter cake (fertilizer and soil conditioner), bagasse (raw-material for industries; animal feed; and electrical energy generation), and plant straws (electrical energy generation). The adoption of mechanized harvests without burning has allowed accumulation of sugarcane straw residues over the cropping area (green cane harvesting). Approximately 84% of the sugarcane production area in Brazil follows green cane harvesting practices. This harvesting system has made the management of weeds, pests and diseases even more complex in sugarcane fields than before. Green cane harvesting has made pest and weed management (mainly) more complex. The presence of residues on the soil directly affects the action of pre-emergent herbicides that are most commonly used in sugarcane and increases the incidence of some important pests such as S. levis and M. fimbriolata. Integration of management programs for weeds, pests, and diseases generates economic benefits and control efficacy (broad spectrum action), maximizing their individual efficacy level, reducing the dependence on only one of them and the risk of selection of resistant pest populations. Monitoring, planning, and evaluation of the history of the sugarcane fields are essentials and assist in decision making regarding the method and time of control to be used. The efficiency of this system assists in the maintenance of high yields, health, and longevity for sugarcane fields.

Globalmente, a satisfação é moderada (91,0%, N=81). Job satisfaction is a difficult concept to define as it reflects each professional’s experiences and these are affected by their personal lives. In the health care area, namely in Primary Health Care, this construct is particularly relevant due to the impact that job satisfaction may have on the relationship with the person/family/community throughout life. The present study aims to assess the degree of satisfaction, relating it to socio demographic and professional characteristics, taking into account the current context, through a quantitative, descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study. Job satisfaction was assessed through the “Nurses’ Job Satisfaction Scale” application validated for the Portuguese population by João, Alves, Silva, Diogo & Ferreira (2017b). The sample consisted of 89 working nurses of a Group of Health Centers in the Lisbon Region. Statistical method included simple descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. Most participants were female (93.3%, N=83); aged over 40 years (87.6%, N=78); had a degree or higher (92.1%, N=82); the proportion were equal between nurse and specialist nurse (48.3%, N=43); most have more than 21 years of experience (70.7%, N=63) and less than 20 years of experience in Group of Health Centers (82.0%, N=73); a considerable part perform roles as of program management and/or functional units (39.3%, N=35). As for the link with the contractual entity, the public job contract (93.3%, N=83) and a fixed schedule (46.1%, N=41) stand out. Overall, satisfaction is moderate (91.0%, N=81). Regarding the total satisfaction dimensions, they were moderately satisfied with the organization and resources (82.2%, N=73); followed by satisfaction with the managers (77.5%, N=69); dissatisfied with the appreciation and remuneration salary (56.2%, N=50); followed by satisfaction with staff (27.0%, N=24). The most representative sources of satisfaction were satisfaction with colleagues (48.3%, N=43) and with professional appreciation (29.2%, N=26).

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a serious problem in preterm infants. Brazilian national data are unknown. To evaluate the incidence and temporal trend of IVH in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants of 18 centers of the Brazilian Network on Neonatal Research.National prospective multicenter cohort study including inborn VLBW preterm infants aged 23Of 6,420 infants, 1951/30.4% (range 27.1-33.8%) had IVH and the disease showed a significant trend towards an overall increase in incidence over time (p = 0.003), especially in three centers. Severe IVH (grade III or IV) occurred in 32.2% (range 29.2-34.5%) of those affected by IVH, with a stable incidence. After adjustments for perinatal variables, the differences persisted among centers: for global IVH, 7 centers had significantly lower rates (OR ranging from 0.31 to 0.62), and 2 presented rates higher than the reference center (OR ranging from 2.00 to 12.46) for severe HIV. Considering perinatal and neonatal variables, 6 centers had significantly lower rates (OR ranging from 0.36 to 0.60) for global IVH than the reference center and 3 had statistically higher rates (OR 1.72, 1.86 and 11.78) for severe forms. The incidence rate of IVH in this Brazilian cohort was high and it revealed an increasing trend towards over time. The severe IVH rate was also worrisome.

Herbicide formulations can alter the herbicide performance, affecting the application safety and weed control efficiency. Thus, the objective of this work was to compare the dynamics of clomazone herbicide applied single and combined with sulfentrazone on sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) straw. Laminated polypropylene containers filled with sugarcane straw (10 t ha−1) were subjected to two clomazone formulations (microencapsulated and conventional formulations, 1200 g ha−1) applied single or combined with sulfentrazone (600 g ha−1) with four replications, and the experiment was duplicated. The application was performed indoors with an automated sprayer. After application, accumulated rainfall depths (0, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mm) on the treated containers were simulated soon after the herbicide applications, and the percolated waters were subsequently collected for herbicide quantification by chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The microencapsulated formulation of clomazone applied single or combined with sulfentrazone enabled the recovery of higher quantity of clomazone (>, 80%), with the advantage that a large percentage remained encapsulated (>, 70%), thus decreasing losses and increasing the product efficiency. The 30 mm simulated rainfall efficiently carried the clomazone herbicide when its microencapsulated formulation was applied, whereas its conventional formulation required higher rainfall depths (60 mm). Sulfentrazone was easily carried through the sugarcane straw by the rainfall depths when it was combined with clomazone, regardless of the clomazone formulation. The clomazone formulation affect the percolation dynamics of this herbicide through the sugarcane straw.

We aimed to study the response of Conyza sumatrensis to different doses of glufosinate, intrapopulation variation in sensitivity to the herbicide, and the heritability of phenotypic response, and model the evolution of resistance. Three studies were conducted in the greenhouse with two repetitions. First, we tested doses of glufosinate (0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 g a.i. ha-1) plus a nontreated check, with four replications. Second, we examined the range in sensitivity of 44 plants to 200 g a.i. ha-1 glufosinate. Third, we evaluated the sensitivity of the progeny of six glufosinate-treated plants to 200 g a.i. ha-1 glufosinate. Plant response was evaluated visually and the ammonium content in leaf tissues was measured. Glufosinate at 400 g a.i. ha-1 caused the highest injury to C.sumatrensis plants. Ammonia accumulation occurred in response to glufosinate treatment, regardless of dose. Ammonia accumulation was correlated strongly with the level of visible plant injury; thus, it is a good indicator of herbicide efficacy. Sensitivity to glufosinate was highly variable within the population. Plants with high ammonia concentration (high injury) after treatment with glufosinate produced progenies that also had high ammonia concentrations after herbicide treatment. The variation in ammonia accumulation among siblings was high. Simulating the exclusion of plants that accumulated more ammonia produced a population that is expected to be less sensitive to glufosinate in the next generation. The stronger the selection pressures by a simulated treatment with glufosinate, the greater the reduction in ammonia accumulation in the progeny and expected sensitivity to glufosinate.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Brazilian Ministry of Health (Ministerio da Saude do Brasil, Fiocruz) Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of congenital heart disease and their outcomes in a Brazilian cohort of very low birth weight preterm infants. Design: Post hoc analysis of data from the Brazilian Neonatal Network database, complemented by retrospective data from medical charts and a cross-sectional survey. Setting: Twenty public tertiary-care university hospitals. Patients: A total of 13,955 newborns weighing from 401 to 1,499 g and between 22 and 36 weeks of gestational age, born from 2010 to 2017. Interventions: None. Measurements and Main Results: The prevalence of congenital heart disease was 2.45% (95% CI, 2.20-2.72%). In a multivariate regression analysis, risk factors associated with congenital heart disease were maternal diabetes (relative risk, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.11-2.20) and maternal age above 35 years (relative risk, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.73-2.51), whereas the protection factors were maternal hypertension (relative risk, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.43-0.69), congenital infection (relative risk, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.21-0.94), and multiple gestation (relative risk, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.55-0.97). The pooled standardized mortality ratio in patients with congenital heart disease was 2.48 (95% CI, 2.22-2.80), which was significantly higher than in patients without congenital heart disease (2.08; 95% CI, 2.03-2.13). However, in multiple log-binomial regression analyses, only the presence of major congenital anomaly, gestational age (< 29 wk; relative risk, 2.32; 95% CI, 2.13-2.52), and Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology and Perinatal Extension II (> 20; relative risk, 3.76; 95% CI, 3.41-4.14) were independently associated with death, whereas the effect of congenital heart disease was spotted only when a conditional inference tree approach was used. Conclusions: The overall prevalence of congenital heart disease in this cohort of very low birth weight infants was higher and with higher mortality than in the general population of live births. The occurrence of a major congenital anomaly, gestational age (< 29 wk), and Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology and Perinatal Extension II (> 20) were significantly and independently associated with death, whereas the association of congenital heart disease and death was only evident when a major congenital anomaly was present. Many newborns are investigated and empirically treated for suspected early-onset sepsis (EOS). This study aimed to describe neonatologists' self-identified risk thresholds for investigating and treating EOS and assess the consistency of these thresholds with clinical decisions.Voluntary online survey, available in two randomized versions, sent to neonatologists from 20 centers of the Brazilian Network on Neonatal Research. The surveys included questions about thresholds for investigating and treating EOS and presented four clinical scenarios with varying calculated risks. In survey version A, only the scenarios were presented, and participants were asked if they would order a blood test or start antibiotics. Survey version B presented the same scenarios and the risk of sepsis. Clinical decisions were compared between survey versions using chi-square tests and agreement between thresholds and clinical decisions were investigated using Kappa coefficients. In total, 293 surveys were completed (145 survey version A and 148 survey version B). The median risk thresholds for blood test and antibiotic treatment were 1:100 and 1:25, respectively. In the high-risk scenario, there was no difference in the proportion choosing antibiotic therapy between the groups. In the moderate-risk scenarios, both tests and antibiotics were chosen more frequently when the calculated risks were included (survey version B). In the low-risk scenario, there was no difference between survey versions. - Abstract

In the present study, the therapeutic efficacy of a selective BKPAH was induced in male Wistar rats by a single injection of MCT. After two weeks, the MCT-treated group was divided into two groups that were either treated with compound X or vehicle. Compound X was administered daily at 28 mg/kg. Electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, and haemodynamic analyses were performed; ex vivo evaluations of pulmonary artery reactivity, right ventricle (RV) and lung histology as well as expression levels of α and β myosin heavy chain, brain natriuretic peptide, and cytokines (TNFα and IL10) in heart tissue were performed.Pulmonary artery rings of the PAH group showed a lower vasodilatation response to acetylcholine, suggesting endothelial dysfunction. Compound X promoted strong vasodilation in pulmonary artery rings of both control and MCT-induced PAH rats. The untreated hypertensive rats presented remodelling of pulmonary arterioles associated with increased resistance to pulmonary flow; increased systolic pressure, hypertrophy and fibrosis of the RV; prolongation of the QT and TThe use of a selective and potent opener to activate the BK

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-11-01 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) The transgenic Liberty Link((R)) (LL) soybean is tolerant to glufosinate, conferred by the enzyme phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT), which is encoded by the pat gene from Streptomyces viridochromogenes. Because symptoms of injury can be observed in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] plants in some situations, this study evaluated the effects of rates of glufosinate on agronomic performance; quality of LL soybean seeds; and the ammonia, glufosinate, and N-acetyl-l-glufosinate concentration (NAG) in soybeans with and without the pat gene after application of increasing glufosinate rates. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted; the first evaluated the selectivity of glufosinate in LL soybeans, and the second evaluated the metabolic changes in soybeans with (LL) and without (RR2) the pat gene, after application of glufosinate. For fieldwork, application of glufosinate at rates up to four times the maximum recommended caused initial injury symptoms (up to 38.5%) in LL soybean plants. However, no negative effect was found on seed quality and agronomic performance of LL plants, including yield. This shows the selectivity of glufosinate promoted by pat gene insertion for application in POST (V4), in LL soybean. For the greenhouse experiment, it was concluded that the LL soybean plants presented high glufosinate metabolism, lower ammonia concentration, and no reduction in dry matter, in comparison with RR2 soybean, after application of high rates of glufosinate. The results show that cognitive styles have a positive influence on nurses’ IOE, that cognitive styles have a positive influence on intrapreneurship, which is mediated by the IO, that the IOE impacts nurses’ intrapreneurship and innovation, which is mediated by intrapreneurship, and that intrapreneurship impacts nurses’ innovation. The originality of this study lies in the absence of studies showing relationships between the dimensions that we propose to analyze during the pandemic of COVID-19.

Made available in DSpace on 2019-10-04T12:14:16Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-07-01 This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the association of admission hypothermia (AH) with death and/or major neonatal morbidities among very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants based on the relative performance of 20 centers of the Brazilian Network of Neonatal Research. This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data using the database registry of the Brazilian Network on Neonatal Research. Center performance was defined by the relative mortality rate using conditional inference trees. A total of 4356 inborn singleton VLBW preterm infants born between January 2013 and December 2016 without malformations were included in this study. The centers were divided into two groups: G1 (with lower mortality rate) and G2 (with higher mortality rate). Crude and adjusted relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated by simple and multiple log-binomial regression models. An AH rate of 53.7% (19.8-93.3%) was significantly associated with early neonatal death in G1 (adjusted RR 1.41, 95% CI 1.09-1.84) and G2 (adjusted RR 1.29, 95%CI 1.01-1.65) and with in-hospital death in G1 (adjusted RR 1.29, 95%CI 1.07-1.58). AH was significantly associated with a lower frequency of necrotizing enterocolitis (adjusted RR 0.58, 95%CI 38-0.88) in G2.Conclusion: AH significantly associated with early neonatal death regardless of the hospital performance. In G2, an unexpected protective association between AH and necrotizing enterocolitis was found, whereas the other morbidities assessed were not significantly associated with AH. 41 n.º 2 (2018)

Background: The aortic arch diseases exhibit high morbidity and mortality rates. Some surgical strategies recommend partial preservation of the aortic arch and the supra-aortic vessels, but the immediate and medium-term mortality rates of patients undergoing this surgical strategy is uncertain. Objectives: To compare overall mortality and mid- term survival curve of patients undergoing surgical strategy of partial preservation of the aortic arch and supra-aortic vessels (group A) compared to conventional strategies of the aortic arch approach (group B); to assess cardiovascular mortality over time. Methods: Descriptive and retrospective study of the medical records of patients undergoing aortic arch repair surgery between February 2000 and July 2013. We analyzed 111 patients, 29 in group A and 82 in group B. The overall survival and survival from cardiovascular events were assessed by Kaplan-Meier test. Results: In- hospital mortality from any cause was 31% in group A and 29.3% in group B. At 1 year, 2 year, and 5 year general survival was similar between the groups. In-hospital, 2 years and 5 years mortality from cardiovascular causes was 13.8%, 14.8%, e 22.7% in group A and 26.8%, 34.6% e 50.9% in group B. The difference between the groups in 5 years showed statistical significance (p = 0.0234). Survival from cardiovascular causes in 2 years and 5 years was 85.2% and 77,3% in group A and 65.4% and 49,1% in group B. Occurrence of urgent and emergency procedures were greater in group A, but without statistical significance. Conclusions: There was no difference in all-cause mortality over time between the groups. Group A showed lower cardiovascular mortality at 5 years than group B. (Int J Cardiovasc Sci. 2018;31(5)466-482)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of herbicides inhibitors of synthesis of carotenoids in three species ofDigitaria horizontalis,Digitaria ciliaris,Digitaria nuda. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in a completely randomized design with four replications. Dose-response biossays for each species were performed with increasing doses of isoxaflutole (112.5 g i.a. ha-1) and clomazone (1200 g i.a. ha-1) applied in pre-emergence, represented by 0; 12.5; 25; 50 and 100% of the dose recommended (N) for use in sugarcane cultivation. The efficacy of the treatments on the different crabgrass species was verified through the evaluation of the visual control score performed at 14, 21 and 30 days after application (DAA) and shoot dry mass (SDM) at 30 DAA. The herbicides isoxaflutole and clomazone provided high levels of fitointoxication and reduction in SDM, demonstrating the efficacy of these herbicides for the crabgrass plants. There was a difference in sensitivity in the lower doses of herbicides used as a function of each species., O setor sucroalcooleiro atualmente enfrenta dificuldades no manejo de plantas daninhas em áreas com ocorrência de capim-colchão.
