Search

Spiral structures and cold fronts in X-rays are frequently observed in cool core galaxy clusters. However, studies on radio mini-haloes associated with such spirals and their physical connections are rare. Here, we present the detection of an extended diffuse radio emission entrained in the X-ray spiral structure in a known cool core cluster Abell 795 (A795). Though the cool core is a sign of the relaxed nature of the clusters, our re-analysed 30 ks Chandra X-ray data of cluster A795 confirms the presence of an interesting log spiral structure of X-ray deficit region complemented by an X-ray excess counter spiral in the residual map, exposing its dynamical activity. Our new analysis of 150 $\&$ 325 MHz GMRT archival data of the cluster confirms the detection of a $\sim180$ kpc ultra-steep ($\alpha\sim-2.7$) diffuse radio structure which was previously reported as a candidate radio mini halo from low sensitive survey maps. This radio emission spans the entire spiral structure ($\sim186$ kpc), enclosed by two previously reported cold fronts. Furthermore, SDSS DR13 optical spectra, as well as GALEX's FUV data, show a considerably low total star formation rate of 2.52 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and having no significant variation in metallicity distribution. We argued that the two-phase (hot and cold) plasma at the cluster core with differential velocity has probably caused the spiral formation and has redistributed the secondary electrons from the central BCG or the pre-accelerated electrons which have been (re-)accelerated by the sloshing turbulence to form the observed candidate radio mini-halo structure. This has been supported by a few previous studies that indicate spiral formation and sloshing turbulence may quench star formation and facilitate smooth metallicity distribution by mixing the gas in the core., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of 30 ks Chandra and 46.8 ks (13 Hr) 1.4 GHz GMRT radio data on the cool-core cluster RXCJ0352.9+1941 with an objective to investigate AGN activities at its core. This study confirms a pair of X-ray cavities at projected distances of about 10.30 kpc and 20.80 kpc, respectively, on the NW and SE of the X-ray peak. GMRT L band (1.4 GHz) data revealed a bright radio source associated with the core of this cluster hosting multiple jet-like emissions. The spatial association of the X-ray cavities with the inner pair of radio jets confirm their origin due to AGN outbursts. The 1.4 GHz radio power ${\rm 7.4 \pm 0.8 \times 10^{39} \, erg\, s^{-1}}$ is correlated with the mechanical power stored in the X-ray cavities ($\sim7.90\times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$), implying that the power injected by radio jets in the ICM is sufficient enough to offset the radiative losses. The X-shaped morphology of diffuse radio emission seems to be comprised of two pairs of orthogonal radio jets, likely formed due to a spin-flip of jets due to the merger of two systems. The X-ray surface brightness analysis of the ICM in its environment revealed two non-uniform, extended spiral-like emission structures on either side of the core, pointing towards the sloshing of gas due to a minor merger and might have resulted in a cold front at $\sim$31 arcsec (62 kpc) with a temperature jump of 1.44 keV., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy

We report the discovery of a radio relic in the northeastern periphery of the cluster Abell 2108 (A2108). A2108 is a part of the uGMRT LOw-MAss Galaxy Cluster Survey (GLOMACS), where our main aim is to search for diffuse radio emission signatures in very sparsely explored low-mass galaxy clusters using uGMRT band-3 (central frequency 400 MHz). We used our uGMRT band-3 data along with the existing archival band-3 uGMRT data to improve image sensitivity. Along with the previously reported southwestern relic, the discovery of the new relic makes A2108 one of the few low-mass clusters hosting double relics. The new relic spans over a region of 610 kpc $\times$ 310 kpc and, interestingly, differs considerably in size and morphology from the other relic. With XMM-Newton science archive data, we also report the tentative detection of a mildly supersonic shock of Mach number $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{SB}=1.42$ and $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{T} = 1.43$ from the surface brightness and temperature discontinuities, respectively near this newly found relic. Both the relics in A2108 are found to be significantly under-luminous compared to other double relic systems in the mass-luminosity plane. Though mild supersonic shocks resulting from an off-axis merger could have influenced their origin, we hypothesize that further local environments have played a crucial role in shaping their morphology., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Diffuse radio emission has been detected in a considerable number of galaxy clusters and groups, revealing the presence of pervasive cosmic magnetic fields, and of relativistic particles in the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. Since cluster radio emission is faint and steep spectrum, its observations are largely limited by the instrument sensitivity and frequency of observation, leading to a dearth of information, more so for lower-mass systems. The unprecedented sensitivity of recently commissioned low-frequency radio telescope arrays, aided by the development of advanced calibration and imaging techniques, have helped in achieving unparalleled image quality. At the same time, the development of sophisticated numerical simulations and the availability of supercomputing facilities have paved the way for high-resolution numerical modeling of radio emission, and the structure of the cosmic magnetic fields in LSS, leading to predictions matching the capabilities of observational facilities. In view of these rapidly-evolving scenerio in modeling and observations, in this review, we summarise the role of the new telescope arrays and the development of advanced imaging techniques and discuss the detections of various kinds of cluster radio sources. In particular, we discuss observations of the cosmic web in the form of supercluster filaments, studies of emission in poor clusters and groups of galaxies, and of ultra-steep spectrum sources. We also review the current theoretical understanding of various diffuse cluster radio sources and the associated magnetic field and polarization. As the statistics of detections improve along with our theoretical understanding, we update the source classification schemes based on their intrinsic properties. In order to deliver the full science potential of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) telescope, several SKA Regional Centres (SRCs) will be required to be constructed in different SKA member countries around the world. These SRCs will provide high performance compute and storage for the generation of advanced science data products from the basic data streams generated by the SKA Science Data Handling and Processing system, critically necessary to the success of the key science projects to be carried out by the SKA user community. They will also provide support to astronomers to enable them to carry out analysis on very large SKA datasets. Construction of such large data centres is a technical challenge for all SKA member nations. In such a situation, each country plans to construct a smaller SRC over the next few years (2022 onwards), known as a proto-SRC. In India, we propose to construct a proto-SRC which will be used for the analysis of data from SKA pathfinders and precursors with strong Indian involvement such as uGMRT, Meerkat and MWA. We describe our thinking on some aspects of the the storage, compute and network of the proto-SRC and how it will be used for data analysis as well as for carrying out various simulations related to SKA key science projects led by Indian astronomers. It is argued that the new morphological and spectral information gleaned from the recently published LoFAR Two meter Sky Survey data release 2 (LoTSS-2 at 144 MHz) observations of the cluster Abell 980 (A980), in combination with its existing GMRT and VLA observations at higher frequencies, provide the much-needed evidence to strengthen the proposal that the cluster's radio emission comes mainly from two double radio sources, both produced by the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in two major episodes of jet activity. The two radio lobes left from the previous activity have become diffuse and developed an ultra-steep radio spectrum while rising buoyantly through the confining hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) and, concomitantly, the host galaxy has drifted to the cluster centre and entered a new active phase manifested by a coinciding younger double radio source. The new observational results and arguments presented here bolster the case that the old and young double radio sources in A980 conjointly represent a `double-double' radio galaxy whose two lobe-pairs have lost colinearity due to the (lateral) drift of their parent galaxy, making this system by far the most plausible case of a `Detached-Double-Double Radio Galaxy' (dDDRG)., Comment: Accepted for publication by Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA); 10 pages, 6 figures

Clusters of galaxies are excellent laboratories for studying recurring nuclear activity in galactic nuclei since their hot gaseous medium can vastly prolong the detectability of their radio lobes via better confinement. We report here a multi-band study of the sparsely studied galaxy cluster Abell 980, based on our analysis of {\it{Chandra}} X-ray and the GMRT (150 and 325 MHz) and EVLA (1.5 GHz) radio archival data, revealing an unusually rich phenomenology. It is shown to be a quasi-relaxed cluster with a cool core ($T\sim4.2$ keV) surrounded by a hot and extensive intracluster medium (ICM) at $T\sim6.8$ keV. The radio emission shows a rich diversity, having (i) two large diffuse sources of ultra-steep spectrum (USS), extending to opposite extremities of the ICM, each associated with an X-ray brightness discontinuity (cold front), (ii) a bright radio-double of size $\sim55$ kpc coinciding with the central BCG, and (iii) a diffuse radio source, likely a mini-halo of size $\sim110$~kpc around the BCG which possesses a huge ellipsoidal stellar halo of extent $\sim 80$~kpc. The association of cold fronts with two highly aged (~ 260 Myr) USS sources in a cool-core cluster, makes it a very rare system. These USS sources are probably radio lobes from a previous episode of jet activity in the BCG, driven buoyantly towards the outskirts of the X-ray halo, thereby creating the cold fronts. A deeper radio image of this cluster may provide a rare opportunity to verify the recently proposed alternative model which explains radio mini-haloes as the aggregate radio emission from Type I supernovae occurring in the giant stellar halo extended across the cluster core., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We report our ongoing search for extremely inverted spectrum compact radio galaxies, for which the defining feature in the radio spectrum is not the spectral peak, but instead the slope of the spectrum (alpha) in the high-opacity (i.e., lower frequency) part of the radio spectrum. Specifically, our focus is on the spectral regime with spectral index, alpha >+2.5. The motivation for our study is, firstly, extragalactic sources with such extreme spectral index are extremely rare, because of the unavailability of right combination of sensitivity and resolution over a range of low frequencies. The second reason is more physically motivated, since alpha = +2.5 is the maximum slope theoretically possible for a standard radio source emitting synchrotron radiation. Low-mass ($M_{\rm{500}}<5\times10^{14}{\rm{M_\odot}}$) galaxy clusters have been largely unexplored in radio observations, due to the inadequate sensitivity of existing telescopes. However, the upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) and the Low Frequency ARray (LoFAR), with unprecedented sensitivity at low frequencies, have paved the way to closely study less massive clusters than before. We have started the first large-scale programme to systematically search for diffuse radio emission from low-mass galaxy clusters, chosen from the Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich cluster catalogue. We report here the detection of diffuse radio emission from four of the 12 objects in our sample, shortlisted from the inspection of the LoFAR Two Meter Sky Survey (LoTSS-I), followed up by uGMRT Band 3 deep observations. The clusters PSZ2~G089 (Abell~1904) and PSZ2~G111 (Abell~1697) are detected with relic-like emission, while PSZ2~G106 is found to have an intermediate radio halo and PSZ2~G080 (Abell~2018) seems to be a halo-relic system. PSZ2~G089 and PSZ2~G080 are among the lowest-mass clusters discovered with a radio relic and a halo-relic system, respectively. A high ($\sim30\%$) detection rate, with powerful radio emission ($P_{1.4\ {\rm GHz}}\sim10^{23}~{\rm{W~Hz^{-1}}}$) found in most of these objects, opens up prospects of studying radio emission in galaxy clusters over a wider mass range, to much lower-mass systems., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The presence of non-thermal electrons and large scale magnetic fields in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is known through the detection of mega-parsec (Mpc) scale diffuse radio synchrotron emission. Although a significant amount of progress in finding new diffuse radio sources has happened in the last decade, most of the investigation has been constrained towards massive low-redshift clusters. In this work, we explore clusters with redshift $z>0.3$ in search of diffuse radio emission, at 325 MHz with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). This campaign has resulted in the discovery of 2 new radio halos (SPT-CL J0013-4906 and SPT-CL J0304-4401) along with 2 other detections (SPT-CL J2031-4037 and SPT-CL J2248-4431), previously reported (at 325 MHz) in the literature. In addition, we detect a halo candidate in 1 cluster in our sample, and upper limits for halos are placed in 8 clusters where no diffuse emission is detected. In the $P_{1.4} - L_\mathrm{X}$ plane, the detected halos follow the observed correlation, whereas the upper limits lie above the correlation line, indicating the possibility of future detection with sensitive observations., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the detection of HI 21-cm absorption in a member of the rare and recently discovered class of compact radio sources, 'Extremely Inverted Spectrum Extragalactic Radio Sources (EISERS)'. EISERS conceivably form a special sub-class of the inverted spectrum radio galaxies since the spectral index of the optically thick part of the spectrum for these sources crosses the synchrotron self absorption limit of $\alpha=+2.5$ (S($\nu$) $\propto$ $\nu^{\alpha}$). We have searched for HI absorption in two EISERS using the recently upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and detected an absorption feature in one of them. The strong associated HI absorption detected against the source J1209$-$2032 ($z$=0.4040) implies an optical depth of 0.178$\pm$0.02 corresponding to an HI column density of 34.8$\pm$2.9 $\times$10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$, for an assumed HI spin temperature of 100 K and covering factor of 1. This is among the highest known optical depth and HI column densities found for compact radio sources of GPC/CSS type and supports the free-free absorption model for the steeply inverted radio spectrum of this source. For the other source, J1549$+$5038 ($z$ = 2.171), no HI absorption was detected in our observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The advent of sensitive low frequency radio observations has revealed a number of diffuse radio objects with peculiar properties that are challenging our understanding about the physics of the intracluster medium. Here, we report the discovery of a steep spectrum radio halo surrounding the central Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) in the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J2031-4037. This cluster is morphologically disturbed yet has a weak cool core, an example of cool core/non-cool core transition system, which harbours a radio halo of $\sim 0.7$ Mpc in size. The halo emission detected at 1.7 GHz is less extended compared to that in the 325 MHz observation, and the spectral index of the part of the halo visible at 325 MHz to 1.7 GHz frequencies was found to be $-1.35 \pm 0.07$. Also, $P_{1.4\ \mathrm{GHz}}$ was found to be $0.77 \times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ which falls in the region where radio mini-halos, halo upper limits and ultra-steep spectrum (USS) halos are found in the $P_{1.4\ \mathrm{GHz}} - L_\mathrm{X}$ plane. Additionally, simulations presented in the paper provide support to the scenario of the steep spectrum. Cool core galaxy clusters are considered to be dynamically relaxed clusters with regular morphology and highly X-ray luminous central region. However, cool core clusters can also be sites for merging events that exhibit cold fronts in X-ray and mini-halos in radio. We present recent radio/X-ray observations of the Phoenix Cluster or SPT-CL J2344-4243 at the redshift of $z=0.596$. Using archival {\it Chandra} X-ray observations, we detect spiraling cool gas around the cluster core as well as discover two cold fronts near the core. It is perhaps the most distant galaxy cluster to date known to host cold fronts. Also, we present JVLA\footnote{Jansky Very Large Array\\ \url{https://science.nrao.edu/facilities/vla}} 1.52 GHz observations of the minihalo, previously discovered at 610 MHz with GMRT\footnote{Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope\\ \url{http://www.gmrt.ncra.tifr.res.in}} observations in the center of the Phoenix galaxy cluster. The minihalo flux density at 1.52 GHz is $9.65 \pm 0.97$ mJy with the spectral index between 610 MHz and 1.52 GHz being $-0.98 \pm 0.16$\footnote{$S_{\nu} = \nu^{\alpha}$ where $S_{\nu}$}. We report the discovery of a putative radio relic, 830 kpc in length and found toward the outskirts of galaxy cluster Abell 1697 ($z=0.181$), using the LOFAR Two Meter Sky Survey (LoTSS) at 144 MHz. With an X-ray-inferred mass of $M_{500}^{X-ray}=2.9^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\times10^{14}~\rm{M_{\odot}}$, this places Abell 1697 among the least massive relic hosts. The relic is also detected at 325 MHz in the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) and at 1.4 GHz in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) with an average spectral index of $\alpha(144,325,1400~\rm{MHz})=-0.98\pm0.01$ and magnetic field of $B_{eq}\sim0.6~\mu$G. This relic, located in the northeast periphery of the cluster, is 300 kpc wide, exhibits a gradual spectral steepening across the width ($\alpha_{144 \rm{MHz}}^{1.4\rm{GHz}}(inj)=-0.70\pm0.11$ to $\alpha_{144 \rm{MHz}}^{1.4\rm{GHz}}(edge)=-1.19\pm0.15$), as well as indications of a co-spatial X-ray (ROSAT) shock and the radio relic emission. The radio power of the relic is $P_{1.4GHz}=8.5\pm1.1\times10^{23}~\rm{W\;Hz^{-1}}$, which is found to be in good agreement with the expected empirical correlation between the radio power and Largest Linear Size (LLS) of relics. The relic is trailed by extended ($790\times550$ kpc) diffuse radio emission towards the cluster center, that is likely an ultra-steep spectrum ($\alpha_{144 \rm{MHz}}^{1.4\rm{GHz}}<-1.84$) radio source. This structure is also found to be older by at least 190 Myrs, has a very low surface brightness of $0.3~\mu$Jy arcsec$^{-2}$ and magnetic field $B_{eq}\sim0.8~\mu$G, similar to that of a radio phoenix. Finally, we discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for the relic and the trailing diffuse radio emission, invoking re-acceleration due to wake turbulence, as well as the revival of fossil electrons from an old AGN activity by the cluster merger shocks., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We present an extension of our search for Extremely Inverted Spectrum Extragalactic Radio Sources (EISERS) to the northern celestial hemisphere. With an inverted radio spectrum of slope $\alpha$ > +2.5, these rare sources would either require a non-standard particle acceleration mechanism (in the framework of synchrotron self-absorption hypothesis), or a severe free-free absorption which attenuates practically all of their synchrotron radiation at metre wavelengths. By applying a sequence of selection filters, a list of 15 EISERS candidates is extracted out by comparing two large-sky radio surveys, WENSS (325 MHz) and TGSS-ADR1 (150 MHz), which overlap across 1.03$\pi$ steradian of the sky. Here we report quasi-simultaneous GMRT observations of these 15 EISERS candidates at 150 MHz and 325 MHz, in an attempt to accurately define their spectra below the turnover frequency. Out of the 15 candidates observed, two are confirmed as EISERS, since the slope of the inverted spectrum between these two frequencies is found to be significantly larger than the critical value $\alpha_c$ = +2.5: the theoretical limit for the standard case of synchrotron self-absorption (SSA). For another 3 sources, the spectral slope is close to, or just above the critical value $\alpha_c$. Nine of the sources have GPS type radio spectra. Studies have shown that mergers of massive galaxy clusters produce shocks and turbulence in the intra-cluster medium, the possible event that creates radio relics, as well as the radio halos. Here we present GMRT dual-band (235 and 610~MHz) radio observations of four such clusters from the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS) catalogue. We report the discovery of a very faint, diffuse, elongated radio source with a projected size of about 0.5~Mpc in cluster MACSJ0152.5-2852. We also confirm the presence of a radio relic-like source (about 0.4~Mpc, previously reported at 325~MHz) in MACSJ0025.4-1222 cluster. Proposed relics in both these clusters are found apparently inside the virial radius instead of their usual peripheral location, while no radio halos are detected. These high-redshift clusters ($z=0.584$ and $0.413$) are among the earliest merging systems detected with cluster radio emissions. In MACSJ1931-2635 cluster, we found a radio mini-halo and an interesting highly bent pair of radio jets. Further, we present here a maiden study of low frequency (GMRT $235\;\&\;610$~MHz) spectral and morphological signatures of a previously known radio cluster MACSJ0014.3-3022 (Abell~2744). This cluster hosts a relatively flat spectrum ($\alpha^{610}_{235}\sim -1.15$), giant ($\sim 1.6$~Mpc each) halo-relic structure and a close-by high-speed ($1769\pm^{148}_{359}$~km~s$^{-1}$) merger-shock ($\mathcal{M}=2.02\pm^{0.17}_{0.41}$) originated from a possible second merger in the cluster., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report quasi-simultaneous GMRT observations of seven extragalactic radio sources at 150, 325, 610 and 1400 MHz, in an attempt to accurately define their radio continuum spectra, particularly at frequencies below the observed spectral turnover. We had previously identified these sources as candidates for a sharply inverted integrated radio spectrum whose slope is close to, or even exceeds $\alpha_c$ = +2.5, the theoretical limit due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) in a source of incoherent synchrotron radiation arising from relativistic particles with the canonical (i.e., power-law) energy distribution. We find that four out of the seven candidates have an inverted radio spectrum with a slope close to or exceeding +2.0, while the critical spectral slope $\alpha_c$ is exceeded in at least one case. These sources, together with another one or two reported in very recent literature, may well be the archetypes of an extremely rare class, from the standpoint of violation of the SSA limit in compact extragalactic radio sources. However, the alternative possibility that free-free absorption is responsible for their ultra-sharp spectral turnover cannot yet be discounted., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present here an extension of our search for EISERS (Extremely Inverted Spectrum Extragalactic Radio Sources) to the northern hemisphere. With an inverted radio spectrum of slope $\alpha$ $>$ + 2.5, these rare sources would either require a non-standard particle acceleration mechanism (in the framework of synchrotron self-absorption hypothesis), or a severe free-free absorption which attenuates practically all of their synchrotron radiation at metre wavelengths. A list of 15 EISERS candidates is presented here. It was assembled by applying a sequence of selection filters, starting with the two available large-sky radio surveys, namely the WENSS (325 MHz) and the ADR-TGSS (150 MHz). These surveys offer the twin advantages of being fairly deep (typical rms $<$ 10 mJy/beam) and having a sub-arcminute resolution. Their zone of overlap spreads over 1.3$\pi$ steradian in the northern hemisphere. Radio spectra are presented for the entire sample of 15 EISERS candidates, of which 8 spectra are of GPS type. Eleven members of the sample are associated with previously known quasars. Information on the parsec-scale radio structure, available for several of these sources, is also summarized.

We present the discovery of ringlike diffuse radio emission structures in the peripheral regions of the Bullet cluster 1E 0657$-$55.8. Ring formations are spanning between 1--3 Mpc away from the center of the cluster, significantly further away from the two already reported relics. Integrated fluxes of four of the sub-regions in the inner `ring' from 4.5 to 10 GHz have also been reported. To understand the possible origin of these structures, here we present a maiden attempt of numerical modelling of a 3D and realistic `bullet' like event in a full cosmological ($\Lambda$CDM) environment with N-body plus hydrodynamics code. We report a simulated `bullet' found inside a (128 Mpc)$^3$ volume simulation with a speed of 2700 km s$^{-1}$, creating a high supersonic bow shock of Mach $M=3.5$ and a clear evidence of temporal separation of dark matter and baryons, assuring no challenge to $\Lambda$CDM cosmology from the bullet event as of now. We are also able to unveil the physics behind the formation of these observed multiple shock structures. Modelled radio emissions in our simulation support a complex combination of merger-associated processes that accelerates and re-accelerates fossil and cosmic-ray electrons. With a time evolution study and the computed radio emissions, we have shown that the ring like formation around the bullet is originated due to the interaction of the strong merger shocks with the accretion shocks at the periphery. Observed steep mass scaling of radio power from the available high mass clusters has ruled out the prospect of detection of 'galaxy groups'. But, the available simulations and observations of thermal emissions show that the groups are merger prone, thus non-virialised, indicating better visibility in the radio waves. Detection of radio emissions from them would help us to understand the scale-dependent particle acceleration mechanisms also groups can be a unique laboratory to test the models of cosmic magnetism and canbe the potential source of WHIMs. So, we have modelled radio emissions from the simulated structures using {\sc{ENZO}}. We present a model for computing magnetic field and for the first time, used the electron energy spectrum from both the Fermi I (DSA) and Fermi II (TRA) mechanisms to compute radio emissions. Computed radio power from more than 200 simulated objects, mass ranging $\geq 10^{13}$ to $2\times 10^{15} M_{\odot}$ show a new mass scaling of $M_{500} \propto P_{1.4\;GHz}^{2.17\pm 0.08}$ and a strong correlation scale of $L_X \propto P_{1.4\;GHz}^{1.08\pm 0.05}$. Both magnetic field and radio power are shown to have adequately replicated the available observations at high mass, allowing us to extend the results to further smaller masses. We report that groups below $10^{14}\;\rm{M_{\odot}}$ show the existence of 10s of nano to a sub-$\mu$G magnetic field and about 10$^{19-23}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ of radio power, much higher than what existing mass scaling predicts. We found that the combined radio power from TRA and DSA electrons can only fit very well to all the observed `radio halos'. Finally, we have implemented this model on a real data set obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). It predicts about 10s to 100s $\mu$Jy/(10$\arcsec$ beam) of radio flux in groups indicating their detectability with existing and aplenty with the future radio telescopes., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures Submitted to Astrophysical Journal (High resolution figures will be available with the published version)

Galaxy clusters are known to be reservoirs of Cosmic Rays (CRs), as inferred from theoretical calculations or detection of CR-derived observables. CR acceleration in clusters is mostly attributed to the dynamical activity that produces shocks. Shocks in clusters emerge out of merger or accretion, but which one is more effective in producing CRs? at which dynamical phase? and why? To this aim, we study the production or injection of CRs through shocks and its evolution in the galaxy clusters using cosmological simulations with the {\sc enzo} code. Particle acceleration model considered here is primarily the Diffusive Shock Acceleration (DSA) of thermal particles, but we also report a tentative study with pre-existing CRs. Defining appropriate dynamical states using the concept of virialization, we studied a sample of merging and non-merging clusters. We report that the merger shocks (with Mach number $\mathcal{M}\sim2-5$) are the most effective CR producers, while high-Mach peripheral shocks (i.e. $\mathcal{M}>5$) are mainly responsible for the brightest phase of CR injection in clusters. Clusters once merged, permanently deviate from CR and X-ray mass scaling of non-merging systems, enabling us to use it as a tool to determine the state of merger. Through a temporal and spatial evolution study, we found a strong correlation between cluster merger dynamics and CR injection. We observed that the brightest phase of X-ray and CR injection from clusters occur respectively at about 1.0 and 1.5 Gyr after every mergers, and CR injection peaks near to the cluster virial radius (i.e $r_{200}$). Delayed CR injection peaks found in this study deserve further investigation for possible impact on the evolution of CR-derived observables from galaxy clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS
