- Abstract
This chapter is an interrogation of the nature of the book’s literary critical work, written by Patrick McCauley, the founder (along with colleague Karen Wendling) of the first and longest-running recurring academic conference on Harry Potter in the United States. McCauley has been teaching the novels in an interdisciplinary undergraduate seminar for years and contemplating how they move students beyond the standard questions of literary criticism. Standing on a hermeneutical foundation and responding to the interests of his students, McCauley urges more consistent engagement with the novels’ meaning. He asks how such attention could shift the direction of literary studies, focused as the field has been on critique.
