Abstract

Bonding characteristics of liquid boron at 2500K are studied by using high resolution Compton scattering. An excellent agreement is found between the measurements and the corresponding Car-Parinello molecular dynamics simulations. Covalent bond pairs are clearly shown to dominate in liquid boron along with the coexistence of diffuse pairs. Our study reveals the complex bonding pattern of liquid boron, and gives insight into the unusual properties of this high temperature liquid.

4. Does passion for physical activity spillover into performance at work? Examining the direct and indirect effects of passion and life satisfaction on organisational performance and innovativeness

Abstract

ABSTRACTMany individuals are passionate for physical activity such as cycling, running, and soccer. Drawing from the dualistic model of passion, the purpose of the present study was to examine the direct and indirect relationships between passion (harmonious and obsessive) for physical activity, life satisfaction, performance, and innovativeness in organisational settings. Survey data were gathered from 272 cyclists who also occupied employment roles beyond their cycling pursuits. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling. Results indicated a direct positive relationship between harmonious passion and both performance and innovativeness at work. Moreover, results indicated that perceived life satisfaction indirectly influenced the relationships between harmonious passion and both performance and innovativeness at work. No significant relationships were found between obsessive passion for cycling and either organisational performance outcome. In sum, these findings suggest that passion for physical activity directly and indirectly (through life satisfaction) enhance organisational performance outcomes but only for harmonious passion.

Abstract

An electrostatic levitation (ESL) furnace was designed for the neutron diffraction study of condensed matter. This apparatus is composed of an electrostatic levitator, a neutron inlet path with Cd slit, a 160 deg window to detect scattered neutrons, a CO2 laser for sample heating, and an optical pyrometer for temperature measurements. A preliminary neutron diffraction experiment with this ESL was performed with polycrystalline alumina samples. The sample position could be controlled with an accuracy of +/- 0.1 mm. The observed Bragg peaks were in complete agreement with those derived from the lattice data of alumina obtained from the literature. The study assesses the temporal nature of cohesion over the course of children's aathletics The study also reveals that individual perceptions of cohesion varies on theoretical and practical implications for children's sports.
