Primordial gravitational waves could be non-Gaussian, just like primordial scalar perturbations. Although the tensor two-point function has thus-far remained elusive, the three-point function could, in principle, be large enough to be detected in Cosmic Microwave Background temperature and polarization anisotropies. We perform a detailed analysis of tensor and mixed tensor-scalar non-Gaussianity through the Planck PR4 bispectrum, placing constraints on eleven primordial templates, spanning various phenomenological and physical regimes including modifications to gravity, additional fields in inflation, and primordial magnetic fields. All analysis is performed using modern quasi-optimal binned estimators, and yields no evidence for tensor non-Gaussianity, with a maximum detection significance of $1.8\sigma$. Our constraints are derived primarily from large-scales (except for tensor-scalar-scalar models), and benefit greatly from the inclusion of $B$-modes. Although we find some loss of information from binning, mask effects and residual foreground contamination, our $f_{\rm NL}$ bounds improve over those of previous analyses by $40-600\%$, with six of the eleven models being analyzed for the first time. Unlike for scalar non-Gaussianity, future low-noise experiments such as LiteBIRD, the Simons Observatory and CMB-S4, will yield considerable improvement in tensor non-Gaussianity constraints., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, 0 detections. Massive particles produced during inflation impact soft limits of primordial correlators. Searching for these signatures presents an exciting opportunity to uncover the particle spectrum in the inflationary epoch. We present non-perturbative methods to constrain intermediate-mass scalars ($0\leq m/H<3/2$, where $H$ is the inflationary Hubble scale) produced during inflation, which give rise to a power-law scaling in the squeezed primordial bispectrum. Exploiting the large-scale structure consistency relations and the separate universe approach, we derive models for the late-time squeezed matter bispectrum and collapsed matter trispectrum sourced by these fields. To validate our models, we run $N$-body simulations with the "Cosmological Collider" squeezed bispectrum for two different particle masses. Our models yield unbiased constraints on the amplitude of non-Gaussianity, $f_{\rm NL}^{\Delta}$, from the squeezed bispectrum and collapsed trispectrum deep into the non-linear regime ($k_{\rm max}\approx 2~h/{\rm Mpc}$ at $z=0$). We assess the information content of these summary statistics, emphasizing the importance of sample variance cancellation in the matter sector. We also study the scale-dependent halo bias in our simulations. For mass-selected halos, the non-Gaussian bias estimated from our simulations agrees with predictions based on (i) separate universe simulations and (ii) universal mass functions. Whilst current observational evidence favors a close-to-Gaussian spectrum of primordial perturbations, there exist many models of the early Universe that predict this distribution to have exponentially enhanced or suppressed tails. In this work, we generate realizations of the primordial potential with non-Gaussian tails via a phenomenological model; these are then evolved numerically to obtain maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large-scale structure (LSS). In the CMB maps, our added non-Gaussianity manifests as a localized enhancement of hot and cold spots, which would be expected to contribute to $N$-point functions up to large $N$. Such models are indirectly constrained by \textit{Planck} trispectrum bounds, which restrict the changes in the temperature fluctuations to $O(10\mu\mathrm{K})$. In the late-time Universe, we find that tailed cosmologies lead to a halo mass function enhanced at high masses, as expected. Furthermore, significant scale-dependent bias in the halo-halo and halo-matter power spectrum is also sourced, which arises from the squeezed limit of large $N$-point functions that are implicitly generated through the enhancement of the tails. These results underscore that a detection of scale-dependent bias alone cannot be used to rule out single field inflation, but can be used together with other statistics to probe a wide range of primordial processes., Comment: Comments welcome!

We present a new perturbative full-shape analysis of BOSS galaxy clustering data, including the full combination of the galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum multipoles, baryon acoustic oscillations, and cross-correlations with the gravitational lensing of cosmic microwave background measured from \textit{Planck}. Assuming the $\Lambda$CDM model, we constrain the matter density fraction $\Omega_m = 0.3138\pm 0.0086$, the Hubble constant $H_0=68.23\pm 0.78\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, and the mass fluctuation amplitude $\sigma_8=0.688\pm 0.026$ (equivalent to $S_8 = 0.703\pm 0.029$). Cosmic structure at low redshifts appears suppressed with respect to the Planck $\Lambda$CDM concordance model at $4.5\sigma$. We explore whether this tension can be explained by the recent DESI preference for dynamical dark energy (DDE): the BOSS data combine with DESI BAO and PantheonPlus supernovae competitively compared to the CMB, yielding no preference for DDE, but the same $\sim 10\%$ suppression of structure, with dark energy being consistent with a cosmological constant at 68\% CL. Interband Cascade Lasers (ICL) have matured into a versatile technological platform in the mid-infrared spectral domain. To broaden their applicability even further, ongoing research pursues the emission of ultrashort pulses. The most promising approach is passive mode-locking with a fast saturable absorber. However, despite vast attempts no passive mode-locked ICL has been demonstrated up to date. In this study we perform pump-probe measurements on the ICL gain and show that its dynamics are mainly ($\sim$70%) governed by a fast recovery time of 2 ps. Our findings explain why passive mode-locking has not succeeded so far, shedding a new light on ICL dynamics as we propose strategies to overcome the current limitations.

Non-adiabatic production of massive particles is a generic feature of many inflationary mechanisms. If sufficiently massive, these particles can leave features in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) that are not well-captured by traditional correlation function analyses. We consider a scenario in which particle production occurs only in a narrow time-interval during inflation, eventually leading to CMB hot- or coldspots with characteristic shapes and sizes. Searching for such features in CMB data is analogous to searching for late-Universe hot- or coldspots, such as those due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. Exploiting this data-analysis parallel, we perform a search for particle-production hotspots in the Planck PR4 temperature dataset, which we implement via a matched-filter analysis. Our pipeline is validated on synthetic observations and found to yield unbiased constraints on sufficiently large hotspots across $\approx 60\%$ of the sky. After removing point sources and tSZ clusters, we find no evidence for new physics and place novel bounds on the coupling between the inflaton and massive particles. These bounds are strongest for larger hotspots, produced early in inflation, whilst sensitivity to smaller hotspots is limited by noise and beam effects. Through such methods we can constrain particles with masses $\mathcal{O}(100)$ times larger than the inflationary Hubble scale, which represents possibly the highest energies ever directly probed with observational data., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. The last few years have seen the emergence of a wide array of novel techniques for analyzing high-precision data from upcoming galaxy surveys, which aim to extend the statistical analysis of galaxy clustering data beyond the linear regime and the canonical two-point (2pt) statistics. We test and benchmark some of these new techniques in a community data challenge "Beyond-2pt", initiated during the Aspen 2022 Summer Program "Large-Scale Structure Cosmology beyond 2-Point Statistics," whose first round of results we present here. The challenge dataset consists of high-precision mock galaxy catalogs for clustering in real space, redshift space, and on a light cone. Participants in the challenge have developed end-to-end pipelines to analyze mock catalogs and extract unknown ("masked") cosmological parameters of the underlying $\Lambda$CDM models with their methods. The methods represented are density-split clustering, nearest neighbor statistics, BACCO power spectrum emulator, void statistics, LEFTfield field-level inference using effective field theory (EFT), and joint power spectrum and bispectrum analyses using both EFT and simulation-based inference. In this work, we review the results of the challenge, focusing on problems solved, lessons learned, and future research needed to perfect the emerging beyond-2pt approaches. The unbiased parameter recovery demonstrated in this challenge by multiple statistics and the associated modeling and inference frameworks supports the credibility of cosmology constraints from these methods. By measuring, modeling and interpreting cosmological datasets, one can place strong constraints on models of the Universe. Central to this effort are summary statistics such as power spectra and bispectra, which condense the high-dimensional dataset into low-dimensional representations. In this work, we introduce a modern set of estimators for computing such statistics from three-dimensional clustering data, and provide a flexible Python implementation; PolyBin3D. Working in a maximum-likelihood formalism, we derive general estimators for the two- and three-point functions, which yield unbiased spectra regardless of the survey mask, weighting scheme, and presence of holes in the window function. These can be directly compared to theory without the need for mask-convolution. Furthermore, we present a numerical scheme for computing the optimal (minimum-variance) estimators for a given survey, which is shown to reduce error-bars on large-scales. Our Python package includes both general "unwindowed'' estimators and idealized equivalents (appropriate for simulations), each of which are efficiently implemented using fast Fourier transforms and Monte Carlo summation tricks, and additionally supports GPU acceleration. These are extensively validated in this work, with Monte Carlo convergence (relevant for masked data) achieved using only a small number of iterations (typically $<10$ for bispectra). Massive particles leave imprints on primordial non-Gaussianity via couplings to the inflaton, even despite their exponential dilution during inflation: practically, the Universe acts as a Cosmological Collider. We present the first dedicated search for spin-zero particles using BOSS redshift-space galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum multipoles, as well as Planck CMB non-Gaussianity data. We demonstrate that some Cosmological Collider models are well approximated by the standard equilateral and orthogonal parametrization; assuming negligible inflaton self-interactions, this facilitates us translating Planck non-Gaussianity constraints into bounds on Collider models. Many models have signatures that are not degenerate with equilateral and orthogonal non-Gaussianity and thus require dedicated searches. Here, we constrain such models using BOSS three-dimensional redshift-space galaxy clustering data, focusing on spin-zero particles in the principal series and constraining their couplings to the inflaton at varying speed and mass, marginalizing over the unknown inflaton self-interactions. This is made possible through an improvement in Cosmological Bootstrap techniques and the combination of perturbation theory and halo occupation distribution models for galaxy clustering. Within the domain of optical frequency comb systems operating in the mid-infrared, extensive exploration has been undertaken regarding critical parameters such as stabilization, coherence, or spectral tunability. Despite this, certain essential parameters remain inadequately addressed, particularly concerning the light source prerequisites for advanced spectroscopy techniques operating in the 3-5 ${\mu}$m spectral region. Specifically, the necessity for high simultaneous stability of average power, spectral shape, and temporal properties, alongside requirements for excellent beam quality and high powers of several Watts, emerges for applications like cavity-enhanced Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy. Existing systems fall short of meeting these rigorous criteria. This study delves into the metrology aspects of an optical parametric oscillator system, with a particular emphasis on its suitability for powerhungry metrology applications. Notably, the highest average power reported in the 3-5 ${\mu}$m region, reaching 10.3W for the idler output at 3.1 ${\mu}$m, is achieved. Additionally, new aspects, like the analysis of idler phase noise and beam quality and the onset of higher order modes are discussed. These findings represent a significant advancement towards the realization of highly-stable, metrologygrade frequency combs in the mid-infrared, thereby facilitating precision spectroscopy techniques previously constrained by light source average powers and quality limitations.

Matter in compact stars is dense enough that transient events within the star could have sufficiently high energies to produce detectable gravitational waves (GWs). These GWs could be used to constrain the equation of state (EoS) for matter in the star and could reveal that there is more than one type of EoS at play in the population, implying that multiple types of compact stars exist. One of these types could be quark stars, composed almost entirely of stable quark matter, and observing GWs is a way to test for the strange matter EoS. Here we explore the possibility that, if fundamental (f-) mode oscillations in pulsars are induced by a pulsar glitch, then these oscillations might produce detectable GWs. We use the existing population of pulsars and their glitches, as well as a much larger synthesized population, along with 15 EoSs (8 for neutron stars and 7 for quark stars) to generate frequencies, damping times, and GW strengths for each. We find that of the EoSs examined, all quark star EoSs produce narrower distributions of f-mode frequency than neutron star EoSs. This result, along with other elements of the data, could be used to differentiate between GWs (or other signals from f-modes) originating from neutron stars and quark stars and thus could confirm the existence of quark stars. We also find that GW astronomy is a potentially viable method for detecting a larger population of pulsars which are not observable electromagnetically and that future GW observatories have the possibility to greatly expand this capability., Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review D

We measure the three-dimensional power spectrum (P3D) of the transmitted flux in the Lyman-a (Ly-a) forest using the complete extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey data release 16 (eBOSS DR16). This sample consists of 205,012 quasar spectra in the redshift range 2 <= z <= 4 at an effective redshift z=2.334. We propose a pair-count spectral estimator in configuration space, weighting each pair by exp(ikr), for wave vector k and pixel pair separation r, effectively measuring the anisotropic power spectrum without the need for fast Fourier transforms. This accounts for the window matrix in a tractable way, avoiding artifacts found in Fourier-transform based power spectrum estimators due to the sparse sampling transverse to the line-of-sight of Ly-a skewers. We extensively test our pipeline on two sets of mocks: (i) idealized Gaussian random fields with a sparse sampling of Ly-a skewers, and (ii) log-normal LyaCoLoRe mocks including realistic noise levels, the eBOSS survey geometry and contaminants. On eBOSS DR16 data, the Kaiser formula with a non-linear correction term obtained from hydrodynamic simulations yields a good fit to the power spectrum data in the range 0.02 <= k <= 0.35 h/Mpc at the 1-2 sigma level with a covariance matrix derived from LyaCoLoRe mocks. We demonstrate a promising new approach for full-shape cosmological analyses of Ly-a forest data from cosmological surveys such as eBOSS, the currently observing Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and future surveys such as the Prime Focus Spectrograph, WEAVE-QSO and 4MOST., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures; published in MNRAS

Many inflationary theories predict a non-Gaussian spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations, sourced from non-standard vacuum fluctuations, modified general relativity or new particles such as gauge fields. Several such models also predict a chiral spectrum in which one polarization state dominates. In this work, we place constraints on the non-Gaussianity and parity properties of primordial gravitational waves utilizing the Planck PR4 temperature and polarization dataset. Using recently developed quasi-optimal bispectrum estimators, we compute binned parity-even and parity-odd bispectra for all combinations of CMB T-, E- and B-modes with $2\leq \ell<500$, and perform both blind tests, sensitive to arbitrary three-point functions, and targeted analyses of a well-motivated equilateral gravitational wave template (sourced by gauge fields), with amplitude $f_{\rm NL}^{ttt}$. This is the first time B-modes have been included in primordial non-Gaussianity analyses; they are found to strengthen constraints on the parity-even sector by $\simeq 30\%$ and dominate the parity-odd bounds, without inducing bias. We report no detection of non-Gaussianity (of either parity), with the template amplitude constrained to $f_{\rm NL}^{ttt}=900\pm 700$ (stable with respect to a number of analysis variations), compared to $1300\pm1200$ in Planck 2018. We introduce a non-perturbative method to constrain the amplitude of local-type primordial non-Gaussianity ($f_{\rm NL}$) using squeezed configurations of the CMB lensing convergence and cosmic shear bispectra. First, we use cosmological consistency relations to derive a model for the squeezed limit of angular auto- and cross-bispectra of lensing convergence fields in the presence of $f_{\rm NL}$. Using this model, we perform a Fisher forecast with specifications expected for upcoming CMB lensing measurements from the Simons Observatory and CMB-S4, as well as cosmic shear measurements from a Rubin LSST/Euclid-like experiment. Assuming a minimum multipole $\ell_{\rm min}=10$ and maximum multipole $\ell_{\rm max}=1400$, we forecast $\sigma_{f_{\rm NL}}=175$ ($95$) for Simons Observatory (CMB-S4). Our forecasts improve considerably for an LSST/Euclid-like cosmic shear experiment with three tomographic bins and $\ell_{\rm min}=10$ and $\ell_{\rm max}=1400$ ($5000$) with $\sigma_{f_{\rm NL}}=31$ ($16$). A joint analysis of CMB-S4 lensing and LSST/Euclid-like shear yields little gain over the shear-only forecasts; however, we show that a joint analysis could be useful if the CMB lensing convergence can be reliably reconstructed at larger angular scales than the shear field. The method presented in this work is a novel and robust technique to constrain local primordial non-Gaussianity from upcoming large-scale structure surveys that is completely independent of the galaxy field (and therefore any nuisance parameters such as $b_\phi$), thus complementing existing techniques to constrain $f_{\rm NL}$ using the scale-dependent halo bias., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, comments welcome!

By work of Kirby-Siebenmann \cite{KirbySiebenmann} and Kervaire-Milnor \cite{KervaireMilnor}, there are only finitely many smooth manifolds homeomorphic to a given closed topological manifold. A construction involving Whitehead torsion shows this is not the case equivariantly for smooth finite group actions on a product $M\times I$ (see \cite[p. 262-266]{BrowderHsiangProblem}). When $2$ has odd order in $\left(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}\right)^\times$, Schultz \cite{SchultzSpherelike} uses a different method involving the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and computations of Ewing \cite{EwingSpheresAsFPSets} to show that there are infinitely many equivariant smooth structures for certain actions of $G=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ on even dimensional spheres with fixed point set $S^2$. These examples are constructed by finding infinitely many $G$-vector bundles over $S^2$ with vanishing Atiyah-Singer class and using these vector bundles to replace the normal bundle of $S^2\subseteq S^{2n}$. We analyze when a manifold supports infinitely many $G$-vector bundles with vanishing Atiyah-Singer class and show that Schultz's examples of exotic equivariant manifolds can be extended to much greater generality. As a consequence, we see that, for infinitely many primes $p$, there are infinitely many stable $G$-smoothings of a smooth $G$-manifold in the sense of Lashof \cite{LashofStableGSmoothing} whenever the fixed set has nonzero second rational cohomology.

We present a theory describing interaction of structured light, such as light carrying orbital angular momentum, with molecules. The light-matter interaction Hamiltonian we derive is expressed through couplings between spherical gradients of the electric field and the (transition) multipole moments of a particle of any non-trivial rotation point group. Our model can therefore accommodate for an arbitrary complexity of the molecular and electric field structure, and can be straightforwardly extended to atoms or nanostructures. Applying this framework to ro-vibrational spectroscopy of molecules, we uncover the general mechanism of angular momentum exchange between the spin and orbital angular momenta of light, molecular rotation and its center-of-mass motion. We show that the non-zero vorticity of Laguerre-Gaussian beams can strongly enhance certain ro-vibrational transitions that are considered forbidden in the case of non-helical light. We discuss the experimental requirements for the observation of these forbidden transitions in state-of-the-art spatially-resolved spectroscopy measurements., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

We propose a new framework for the analysis of current and future cosmological surveys, which combines perturbative methods (PT) on large scales with conditional simulation-based implicit inference (SBI) on small scales. This enables modeling of a wide range of statistics across all scales using only small-volume simulations, drastically reducing computational costs, and avoids the assumption of an explicit small-scale likelihood. As a proof-of-principle for this hybrid simulation-based inference (HySBI) approach, we apply it to dark matter density fields and constrain cosmological parameters using both the power spectrum and wavelet coefficients, finding promising results that significantly outperform classical PT methods. We additionally lay out a roadmap for the next steps necessary to implement HySBI on actual survey data, including consideration of bias, systematics, and customized simulations. The shapes of galaxies trace scalar physics in the late-Universe through the large-scale gravitational potential. Are they also sensitive to higher-spin physics? We present a general study into the observational consequences of vector and tensor modes in the early and late Universe, through the statistics of cosmic shear and its higher-order generalization, flexion. Higher-spin contributions arise from both gravitational lensing and intrinsic alignments, and we give the leading-order correlators for each (some of which have been previously derived), in addition to their flat-sky limits. In particular, we find non-trivial sourcing of shear $EB$ and $BB$ spectra, depending on the parity properties of the source. We consider two sources of vector and tensor modes: scale-invariant primordial fluctuations and cosmic strings, forecasting the detectability of each for upcoming surveys. Shear is found to be a powerful probe of cosmic strings, primarily through the continual sourcing of vector modes; flexion adds little to the constraining power except on very small scales ($\ell\gtrsim 1000$), though it could be an intriguing probe of as-yet-unknown rank-three tensors or halo-scale physics. New physics in the early Universe could lead to parity-violation in the late Universe, sourcing statistics whose sign changes under point reflection. The best constraints on such phenomena have come from the Planck temperature fluctuations; however, this is already cosmic-variance-limited down to relatively small scales, thus only small improvements are expected in the future. Here, we search for signatures of parity-violation in the polarized CMB, using the Planck PR4 $T$- and $E$-mode data. We perform both a simulation-based blind test for any parity-violating signal at $\ell<518$, and a targeted search for primordial $U(1)$ gauge fields (and the amplitudes of a generic collapsed model) at $\ell<2000$. In all cases, we find no evidence for new physics, with the model-independent test finding consistency with the FFP10/NPIPE simulation suite at $(-)0.4\sigma$, and the gauge field test constraining the fractional amplitude of gauge fields during inflation to be below $6\times 10^{-19}$ at $95\%$ confidence level for a fiducial model. The addition of polarization data can significantly improve the constraints, depending on the particular model of primordial physics, and the bounds will tighten significantly with the inclusion of smaller-scale information., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. What would a parity-violating universe look like? We present a numerical and theoretical study of mirror asymmetries in the late universe, using a new suite of $N$-body simulations: QUIJOTE-Odd. These feature parity-violating initial conditions, injected via a simple ansatz for the imaginary primordial trispectrum and evolved into the non-linear regime. We find that the realization-averaged power spectrum, bispectrum, halo mass function, and matter PDF are not affected by our modifications to the initial conditions, deep into the non-linear regime, which we argue arises from rotational and translational invariance. In contrast, the parity-odd trispectrum of matter (measured using a new estimator), shows distinct signatures proportional to the parity-violating parameter, $p_{\rm NL}$, which sets the amplitude of the primordial trispectrum. We additionally find intriguing signatures in the angular momentum of halos, with the primordial trispectrum inducing a non-zero correlation between angular momentum and smoothed velocity field, proportional to $p_{\rm NL}$. We derive optimal estimators for the binned two-, three-, and four-point correlators of statistically isotropic tensor fields defined on the sphere, in the presence of arbitrary beams, inpainting, and masking. This is a conceptually straightforward extension of the associated scalar field Philcox (2023), but upgraded to include spin-$2$ fields such as Cosmic Microwave Background polarization and galaxy shear, and parity-violating physics in all correlators. All estimators can be realized using spin-weighted spherical harmonic transforms and Monte Carlo summation and are are implemented in the public code PolyBin, with computation scaling, at most, with the total number of bins. We perform a suite of validation tests verifying that the estimators are unbiased and, in limiting regimes, minimum variance. Galaxy surveys map the three-dimensional distribution of matter in the Universe, encoding information about both the primordial cosmos and its subsequent evolution. By comparing the angular and physical scales of features in the galaxy distribution, we can compute the physical distance to the sample, and thus extract the Hubble parameter, $H_0$. In this chapter, we discuss how this is performed in practice, introducing two key ``standard rulers''. The first, the sound horizon at recombination, leads to baryon acoustic oscillations, and, by combining with external data from the CMB or Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, leads to a competitive $H_0$ constraint. Information can also be extracted from the physical scale of the horizon at matter-radiation equality; though somewhat less constraining, this depends on very different physics and is an important validation test of the physical model. We discuss how both such constraints can be derived (using ``template'' and ``full-shape'' methodologies), and present a number of recent constraints from the literature, some of which are comparable in precision to (and independent from) Planck. Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) have cemented the notion that the large-scale Universe is both statistically homogeneous and isotropic. But is it invariant also under reflections? To probe this we require parity-sensitive statistics: for scalar observables, the simplest is the trispectrum. We make the first measurements of the parity-odd scalar CMB, focusing on the large-scale ($2<\ell<510$) temperature anisotropies measured by Planck. This is facilitated by new quasi-maximum-likelihood estimators for binned correlators, which account for mask convolution and leakage between even- and odd-parity components, and achieve ideal variances within $\approx 20\%$. We perform a blind test for parity violation by comparing a $\chi^2$ statistic from Planck to theoretical expectations, using two suites of simulations to account for the possible likelihood non-Gaussianity and residual foregrounds. We find consistency at the $\approx 0.4\sigma$ level, yielding no evidence for novel early-Universe phenomena. The measured trispectra allow for a wealth of new physics to be constrained; here, we use them to constrain eight primordial models, including Ghost Inflation, Cosmological Collider scenarios, and Chern-Simons gauge fields. We find no signatures of new physics, with a maximal detection significance of $2.0\sigma$. Our results also indicate that the recent parity excesses seen in the BOSS galaxy survey are not primordial in origin, given that the CMB dataset contains roughly $250\times$ more primordial modes, and is far easier to interpret, given the linear physics, Gaussian statistics, and accurate mocks. We derive optimal estimators for the two-, three-, and four-point correlators of statistically isotropic scalar fields defined on the sphere, such as the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature fluctuations, allowing for arbitrary (linear) masking and inpainting schemes. In each case, we give the optimal unwindowed estimator (obtained via a maximum-likelihood prescription, with an associated Fisher deconvolution matrix), and an idealized form, and pay close attention to their efficient computation. For the trispectrum, we include both parity-even and parity-odd contributions, as allowed by symmetry. The estimators can include arbitrary weighting of the data (and remain unbiased), but are shown to be optimal in the limit of inverse-covariance weighting and Gaussian statistics. The normalization of the estimators is computed via Monte Carlo methods, with the rate-limiting steps (involving spherical harmonic transforms) scaling linearly with the number of bins. The widely used MASTER approach for angular power spectrum estimation was developed as a fast $C_{\ell}$ estimator on limited regions of the sky. This method expresses the power spectrum of a masked map ("pseudo-$C_\ell$") in terms of the power spectrum of the unmasked map (the true $C_\ell$) and that of the mask or weight map. However, it is often the case that the map and mask are correlated in some way, such as point source masks used in cosmic microwave background (CMB) analyses, which have nonzero correlation with CMB secondary anisotropy fields and other mm-wave sky signals. In such situations, the MASTER approach gives biased results, as it assumes that the unmasked map and mask have zero correlation. While such effects have been discussed before with regard to specific physical models, here we derive a completely general formalism for any case where the map and mask are correlated. We show that our result ("reMASTERed") reconstructs ensemble-averaged pseudo-$C_\ell$ to effectively exact precision, with significant improvements over traditional estimators for cases where the map and mask are correlated. In particular, we obtain an improvement in the mean absolute percent error from 30% with the MASTER result to essentially no error with the reMASTERed result for an integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) field map with a mask built from the thresholded ISW field, and 10% to effectively zero for a Compton-$y$ map combined with an infrared source mask (the latter being directly relevant to actual data analysis). An important consequence of our result is that for maps with correlated masks it is no longer possible to invert a simple equation to obtain the true $C_\ell$ from the pseudo-$C_\ell$. Instead, our result necessitates the use of forward modeling from theory space into the observable domain of the pseudo-$C_\ell$. We present a framework for self-consistent cosmological analyses of the full-shape anisotropic bispectrum, including the quadrupole $(\ell=2)$ and hexadecapole $(\ell=4)$ moments. This features a novel window-free algorithm for extracting the latter quantities from data, derived using a maximum-likelihood prescription. Furthermore, we introduce a theoretical model for the bispectrum multipoles (which does not introduce new free parameters), and test both aspects of the pipeline on several high-fidelity mocks, including the PT Challenge suite of gigantic cumulative volume. This establishes that the systematic error is significantly below the statistical threshold, both for the measurement and modeling. As a realistic example, we extract the large-scale bispectrum multipoles from BOSS DR12 and analyze them in combination with the power spectrum data. Assuming a minimal $\Lambda$CDM model, with a BBN prior on the baryon density and a \textit{Planck} prior on $n_s$, we can extract the remaining cosmological parameters directly from the clustering data. The inclusion of the unwindowed higher-order $(\ell>0)$ large-scale bispectrum multipoles is found to moderately improve one-dimensional cosmological parameter posteriors (at the $5\%-10\%$ level), though these multipoles are detected only in three out of four BOSS data segments at $\approx 5\sigma$. Combining information from the power spectrum and bispectrum multipoles, the real space power spectrum, and the post-reconstructed BAO data, we find $H_0 = 68.2\pm 0.8~\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, $\Omega_m =0.33\pm 0.01$ and $\sigma_8 = 0.736\pm 0.033$ (the tightest yet found in perturbative full-shape analyses). We search for ultra-light axions as dark matter (DM) and dark energy particle candidates, for axion masses $10^{-32}\,\mathrm{eV} \leq m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-24}\,\mathrm{eV}$, by a joint analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy clustering data -- and consider if axions can resolve the tension in inferred values of the matter clustering parameter $S_8$. We give legacy constraints from Planck 2018 CMB data, improving 2015 limits on the axion density $\Omega_\mathrm{a} h^2$ by up to a factor of three; CMB data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope marginally weaken Planck bounds at $m_\mathrm{a} = 10^{-25}\,\mathrm{eV}$, owing to lower (and theoretically-consistent) gravitational lensing signals. We jointly infer, from Planck CMB and full-shape galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), that axions are, today, $< 10\%$ of the DM for $m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-26}\,\mathrm{eV}$ and $< 1\%$ for $10^{-30}\,\mathrm{eV} \leq m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-28}\,\mathrm{eV}$. BOSS data strengthen limits, in particular at higher $m_\mathrm{a}$ by probing high-wavenumber modes ($k < 0.4 h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$). BOSS alone finds a preference for axions at $2.7 \sigma$, for $m_\mathrm{a} = 10^{-26}\,\mathrm{eV}$, but Planck disfavours this result. Nonetheless, axions in a window $10^{-28}\,\mathrm{eV} \leq m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-25}\,\mathrm{eV}$ can improve consistency between CMB and galaxy clustering data, e.g., reducing the $S_8$ discrepancy from $2.7 \sigma$ to $1.6 \sigma$, since these axions suppress structure growth at the $8 h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ scales to which $S_8$ is sensitive. We expect improved constraints with upcoming high-resolution CMB and galaxy lensing and future galaxy clustering data, where we will further assess if axions can restore cosmic concordance., Comment: 53 pages, 22 figures. We present a robust, precise, and accurate method to simultaneously measure the refractive indices of two transparent materials within an interference coating. This is achieved by measuring both a photometrically accurate transmittance spectrum and the as-grown individual layer thicknesses of a thin-film multilayer structure. These measurements are used for a TMM-based curve-fitting routine which extracts the refractive indices and their measurement uncertainties via a Monte-Carlo-type error propagation. We demonstrate the performance of this approach by experimentally measuring the refractive indices of both, GaAs and Al$_{0.929}$Ga$_{0.071}$As, as present in an epitaxial distributed Bragg reflector. A variety of devices can be used to obtain the transmittance spectrum (e.g., FTIR, grating-based spectrophotometer) and layer thicknesses (e.g., SEM, TEM, AFM), the discussed approach is readily adaptable to virtually any wavelength region and many transparent material combinations of interest. We present our results for simultaneous measurement of the refractive indices of gallium arsenide (GaAs) and aluminum gallium arsenide (Al$_\mathrm{x}$Ga$_\mathrm{1-x}$As) from $2.0$ to $7.1\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ ($5000$ to $1400\,\mathrm{cm^{-1}}$). We obtain these values from a monocrystalline superlattice Bragg mirror of excellent purity (background doping $\leq 1 \times 10^{-14}\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$), grown via molecular beam epitaxy. To recover the refractive indices over such a broad wavelength range, we fit a dispersion model for each material. In a novel combination of well-established methods, we measure both a photometrically accurate transmittance spectrum of the Bragg mirror via Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and the individual physical layer thicknesses of the structure via scanning electron microscopy. To infer the uncertainty of the refractive index values, we estimate relevant measurement uncertainties and propagate them via a Monte-Carlo method. This highly-adaptable approach conclusively yields propagated relative uncertainties on the order of $10^{-4}$ over the measured spectral range for both GaAs and Al$_{0.929}$Ga$_{0.071}$As. The fitted model can also approximate the refractive index for MBE-grown Al$_\mathrm{x}$Ga$_\mathrm{1-x}$As for $0\leq x \leq 1$. We forecast the constraints on single-field inflation from the bispectrum of future high-redshift surveys such as MegaMapper. Considering non-local primordial non-Gaussianity (NLPNG), we find that current methods will yield constraints of order $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 23$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 12$ in a joint power-spectrum and bispectrum analysis, varying both nuisance parameters and cosmology, including a conservative range of scales. Fixing cosmological parameters and quadratic bias parameter relations, the limits tighten significantly to $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 17$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 8$. These compare favorably with the forecasted bounds from CMB-S4: $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 21$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 9$, with a combined constraint of $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 14$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 7$; this weakens only slightly if one instead combines with data from the Simons Observatory. We additionally perform a range of Fisher analyses for the error, forecasting the dependence on nuisance parameter marginalization, scale cuts, and survey strategy. Lack of knowledge of bias and counterterm parameters is found to significantly limit the information content; this could be ameliorated by tight simulation-based priors on the nuisance parameters. The error-bars decrease significantly as the number of observed galaxies and survey depth is increased: as expected, deep dense surveys are the most constraining, though it will be difficult to reach $\sigma(f_{\rm NL})\approx 1$ with current methods. Could new physics break the mirror symmetry of the Universe? Utilizing recent measurements of the parity-odd four-point correlation function of BOSS galaxies, we probe the physics of inflation by placing constraints on the amplitude of a number of parity-violating models. Within canonical models of (single-field, slow-roll) inflation, no parity-asymmetry can occur; however, it has recently been shown that breaking of the standard assumptions can lead to parity violation within the Effective Field Theory of Inflation (EFTI). In particular, we consider the Ghost Condensate and Cosmological Collider scenarios -- the former for the leading and subleading operators in the EFTI and the latter for different values of mass and speed of an exchanged spin-$1$ particle -- for a total of $18$ models. Each instance yields a definite prediction for the inflationary trispectrum, which we convert to a late-time galaxy correlator prediction (through a highly non-trivial calculation) and constrain using the observed data. We find no evidence for inflationary parity-violation (with each of the $18$ models having significances below $2\sigma$), and place the first constraints on the relevant coupling strengths, at a level comparable with the theoretical perturbativity bounds. This is also the first time Cosmological Collider signatures have directly been searched for in observational data. We further show that possible secondary parity-violating signatures in galaxy clustering can be systematically described within the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. We argue that these late-time contributions are subdominant compared to the primordial parity-odd signal for a vast region of parameter space. We show how consistency relations can be used to robustly extract the amplitude of local primordial non-Gaussianity ($f_{\rm NL}$) from the squeezed limit of the matter bispectrum, well into the non-linear regime. First, we derive a non-perturbative relation between primordial non-Gaussianity and the leading term in the squeezed bispectrum, revising some results present in the literature. This relation is then used to successfully measure $f_{\rm NL}$ from $N$-body simulations. We discuss the dependence of our results on different scale cuts and redshifts. Specifically, the analysis is strongly dependent on the choice of the smallest soft momentum, $q_{\rm min}$, which is the most sensitive to primordial bispectrum contributions, but is largely independent of the choice of the largest hard momentum, $k_{\rm max}$, due to the non-Gaussian nature of the covariance. We also show how the constraints on $f_{\rm NL}$ improve at higher redshift, due to a reduced off-diagonal covariance. In particular, for a simulation with $f_{\rm NL} = 100$ and a volume of $(2.4 \text{ Gpc}/h)^3$, we measure $f_{\rm NL} = 98 \pm 12$ at redshift $z=0$ and $f_{\rm NL} = 97 \pm 8$ at $z=0.97$. Finally, we compare our results with a Fisher forecast, showing that the current version of the analysis is satisfactorily close to the Fisher error. Studies of disordered heterogeneous media and galaxy cosmology share a common goal: analyzing the distribution of particles at `microscales' to predict physical properties at `macroscales', whether for a liquid, composite material, or entire Universe. The former theory provides an array of techniques to characterize a wide class of microstructures; in this work, we apply them to the distributions of galaxies. We focus on the lower-order correlation functions, `void' and `particle' nearest-neighbor functions, pair-connectedness functions, percolation properties, and a scalar order metric. Compared to homogeneous Poisson and typical disordered systems, the cosmological simulations exhibit enhanced large-scale clustering and longer tails in the nearest-neighbor functions, due to the presence of quasi-long-range correlations. On large scales, the system appears `hyperuniform', due to primordial density fluctuations, whilst on the smallest scales, the system becomes almost `antihyperuniform', and, via the order metric, is shown to be a highly correlated disordered system. Via a finite scaling analysis, we show that the percolation threshold of the galaxy catalogs is significantly lower than for Poisson realizations; this is consistent with the observation that the galaxy distribution contains larger voids. However, the two sets of simulations share a fractal dimension, implying that they lie in the same universality class. Finally, we consider the ability of large-scale clustering statistics to constrain cosmological parameters using simulation-based inference. Both the nearest-neighbor distribution and pair-connectedness function considerably tighten bounds on the amplitude of cosmological fluctuations at a level equivalent to observing twenty-five times more galaxies. The polarized Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (pSZ) effect is sourced by the Thomson scattering of CMB photons from distant free electrons and yields a novel view of the CMB quadrupole throughout the observable Universe. Galaxy shear measures the shape distortions of galaxies, probing both their local environment and the intervening matter distribution. Both observables give interesting constraints on the cosmological model; here we ask: what can be learnt from their combination? The pSZ-shear cross-spectrum measures the shear-galaxy-polarization bispectrum and contains contributions from (1) the Sachs-Wolfe (SW) effect, (2) the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, and (3) inflationary gravitational waves. Since the modes contributing to the pSZ signal are not restricted to the Earth's past lightcone, the low-redshift cross-spectra could provide a novel constraint on dark energy via the ISW effect, whilst the SW signal couples scalar modes at very different times but at similar positions; this provides a unique probe of the Universe's homogeneous time evolution. We give expressions for all major contributions to the shear, galaxy, and pSZ auto- and cross-spectra, and evaluate their detectability via Fisher forecasts. Despite significant theoretical utility, the cross-spectra will be challenging to detect: combining CMB-S4 with Rubin yields a $1.6\sigma$ detection of the ISW contribution, which increases to $5.2\sigma$ for a futuristic experiment involving CMB-HD and a higher galaxy sample density. For parity-even (parity-odd) tensors, we predict a $1\sigma$ limit of $\sigma(r) = 0.9$ ($0.2$) for CMB-S4 and Rubin, or $0.3$ ($0.06$) for the more futuristic setup. Whilst this is significantly better than the constraints from galaxy shear alone (and less sensitive to systematics), it is unlikely to be competitive, but may serve as a useful cross-check., Comment: 15+5 pages, accepted by Phys. Parity-violating physics in the early Universe can leave detectable traces in late-time observables. Whilst vector- and tensor-type parity-violation can be observed in the $B$-modes of the cosmic microwave background, scalar-type signatures are visible only in the four-point correlation function (4PCF) and beyond. This work presents a blind test for parity-violation in the 4PCF of the BOSS CMASS sample, considering galaxy separations in the range $[20,160]h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$. The parity-odd 4PCF contains no contributions from standard $\Lambda$CDM physics and can be efficiently measured using recently developed estimators. Data are analyzed using both a non-parametric rank test (comparing the BOSS 4PCFs to those of realistic simulations) and a compressed $\chi^2$ analysis, with the former avoiding the assumption of a Gaussian likelihood. These find similar results, with the rank test giving a detection probability of $99.6\%$ ($2.9\sigma$). This provides significant evidence for parity-violation, either from cosmological sources or systematics. We perform a number of systematic tests: although these do not reveal any observational artefacts, we cannot exclude the possibility that our detection is caused by the simulations not faithfully representing the statistical properties of the BOSS data. Our measurements can be used to constrain physical models of parity-violation. As an example, we consider a coupling between the inflaton and a $U(1)$ gauge field and place bounds on the latter's energy density, which are several orders of magnitude stronger than those previously reported. We study the cosmological information content of the redshift-space galaxy bispectrum monopole at one-loop order in perturbation theory. We incorporate all effects necessary for comparison to data: fourth-order galaxy bias, infrared resummation (accounting for the non-linear evolution of baryon acoustic oscillations), ultraviolet counterterms, non-linear redshift-space distortions, stochastic contributions, projection, and binning effects. The model is implemented using FFTLog, and validated with the PT Challenge suite of $N$-body simulations, whose large volume allows for high-precision tests. Focusing on the mass fluctuation amplitude, $\sigma_8$, and galaxy bias parameters, we find that including one-loop corrections allow us to significantly extend the range of scales over which the bispectrum can be modeled, and greatly tightens constraints on bias parameters. However, this does not lead to noticeable improvements in the $\sigma_8$ errorbar due to the necessary marginalization over a large number of nuisance parameters with conservative priors. Analyzing a BOSS-volume likelihood, we find that the addition of the one-loop bispectrum may lead to improvements on primordial non-Gaussianity constraints by $\lesssim 30\%$ and on $\sigma_8$ by $\approx 10\%$, though we caution that this requires pushing the analysis to short scales where the galaxy bias parameters may not be correctly recovered; this may lead to biases in the recovered parameter values. Many theoretical resolutions to the so-called "Hubble tension" rely on modifying the sound horizon at recombination, $r_s$, and thus the acoustic scale used as a standard ruler in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure (LSS) datasets. As shown in a number of recent works, these observables can also be used to compute $r_s$-independent constraints on $H_0$ by making use of the horizon scale at matter-radiation equality, $k_{\rm eq}$, which has different sensitivity to high redshift physics than $r_s$. As such, $r_s$- and $k_{\rm eq}$-based measurements of $H_0$ (within a $\Lambda$CDM framework) may differ if there is new physics present pre-recombination. In this work, we present the tightest constraints on the latter from current data, finding $H_0=64.8^{+2.2}_{-2.5}$ at 68% CL (in $\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ units) from a combination of BOSS galaxy power spectra, Planck CMB lensing, and the newly released Pantheon+ supernova constraints, as well as physical priors on the baryon density, neutrino mass, and spectral index. The BOSS and Planck measurements have different degeneracy directions, leading to the improved combined constraints, with a bound of $H_0 = 67.1^{+2.5}_{-2.9}$ ($63.6^{+2.9}_{-3.6}$) from BOSS (Planck) alone. The results show some dependence on the neutrino mass bounds, with the constraint broadening to $H_0 = 68.0^{+2.9}_{-3.2}$ if we instead impose a weak prior on $\sum m_\nu$ from terrestrial experiments, or shifting to $H_0 = 64.6\pm2.4$ if the neutrino mass is fixed to its minimal value. Even without dependence on the sound horizon, our results are in $\approx 3\sigma$ tension with those obtained from the Cepheid-calibrated distance ladder, which begins to cause problems for new physics models that vary $H_0$ by changing acoustic physics or the expansion history immediately prior to recombination., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phys.
