1. Educational psychologists' experiences and perceptions of reflective practice

Abstract

This study explored Educational Psychologists' experiences and perceptions of reflective practice. Reflective practice generates significant professional interest. However, it is an area where there has been a lack of research to date. For this study, ten Educational Psychologists, currently practicing in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, were interviewed. The qualitative data from those interviews was analysed using thematic analysis. Four overarching themes, and eight themes, were identified: Educational Psychologists as Reflective Practitioners (professional interest in reflective practice); Outcome of Reflective Practice (effect on EP role; Dunning-Kruger effect); Wide-Ranging Reflective Space (.means for reflection; enabler of reflective practice; obstacles) and The Way Forward (observation of growth; opportunities for forthcoming development). Participants were generally positive in their views and experiences of reflective practice, feeling that it benefited both their professional practice and their personal wellbeing. In order for the use of reflective practice to grow, it needs to be given greater priority at individual, organisational and governing levels. The lack of an agreed definition of reflective practice was also seen as a barrier. Finally, the study highlighted the importance of continued research into reflective practice.

Abstract

We have measured the magnetization of rare-earth chiral magnets Yb(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_{3}$Al$_{9}$ for $x$=0 and 0.06 up to 14.5 T. Magnetization for the field direction $H \parallel c$, which is the hard axis at low temperatures and low fields, overtakes the easy axis magnetization for $H \perp c$ above $\sim$4 T. We analyzed this overtaking of the magnetization curves by considering a crystalline electric field model. It is shown that the $B_{66}$ term, which connects the $|\pm5/2 \rangle$ and the $|\mp7/2\rangle$ states through the off-diagonal matrix element, is responsible for the characteristic magnetization process in this compound. Abstract

Optical conductivity [$\sigma(\omega)$] of CeRhIn$_5$ and YbNi$_3$Ga$_9$ have been measured at external pressures to 10 GPa and at low temperatures to 6 K. Regarding CeRhIn$_5$, at ambient pressure the main feature in $\sigma(\omega)$ is a Drude peak due to free carriers. With increasing pressure, however, a characteristic mid-infrared (mIR) peak rapidly develops in $\sigma(\omega)$, and its peak energy and width increase with pressure. These features are consistent with an increased conduction ($c$)-$f$ electron hybridization at high pressure, and show that the pressure has tuned the electronic state of CeRhIn$_5$ from very weakly to strongly hybridized ones. As for YbNi$_3$Ga$_9$, in contrast, a marked mIR peak is observed already at ambient pressure, indicating a strong $c$-$f$ hybridization. At high pressures, however, the mIR peak shifts to lower energy and becomes diminished, and seems merged with the Drude component at 10 GPa. Namely, CeRhIn$_5$ and YbNi$_3$Ga$_9$ exhibit some opposite tendencies in the pressure evolutions of $\sigma(\omega)$ and electronic structures. These results are discussed in terms of the pressure evolutions of $c$-$f$ hybridized electronic states in Ce and Yb compounds, in particular in terms of the electron-hole symmetry often considered between Ce and Yb compounds., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted to Physical Review B

Abstract

We report electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of intermediate valence YbNi$_{3}$Ga$_{9}$ under pressure and magnetic field. We have revealed a characteristic pressure-induced Yb valence crossover within the temperature-pressure phase diagram, and a first-order metamagnetic transition is found below $P_{\rm c}$ $\sim$ 9 GPa where the system undergoes a pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition. Abstract

We report the heat capacity and magnetic properties of single crystals of YbPd2Si2 grown from Sn flux. YbPd2Si2 is a non magnetic heavy fermion compound with electronic specific heat coefficient γ = 95 mJ/mol K2 and Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility χ0 0.0115 emu/mol. The density of states of single crystal YbPd2Si2 is approximately half that of polycrystalline YbPd2Si2 while the strength of the Kondo effect in the single crystal is approximately twice that of poly crystal.

Abstract

This study about former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) would likely focus on the challenges and experiences that they face upon returning to the Philippines after working abroad. Many OFWs leave the country in search of better job opportunities and higher wages, but their time abroad is often marked by separation from their families and adjustment to new cultures. They may also struggle with feelings of isolation and depression, as well as financial challenges. Despite these challenges, many former OFWs are being resilient and resourceful, using their experiences abroad and small savings to build small businesses and also receives support from the government of their home country. This study generated four themes namely: 1. For the Future, 2. Challenges, 3. Motivation, and 4. Coping Strategies.

However, maintaining Hb values continuously within a narrow target has been difficult, and there has been no generally accepted anemia management algorithm for hemodialysis patients. Methods: In our study, we created an anemia management algorithm that considers the length of erythrocyte lifetimes, focuses on the combination of erythropoiesis-stimulating agent management and iron administration, and prevents iron deficiency and overload. Our algorithm established a target Hb range of 10–12 g/dL. Results: We evaluated our algorithm in 49 patients for 6 months. The mean Hb values were approximately 11 g/dL during our study period. The percentage of patients in the target Hb range of 10–12 g/dL increased from 77.6% (38 of 49) at baseline to 85.7% (42 of 49) at 4–6 months. Throughout monthly regular blood tests during 1–6 months after we introduced our algorithm, Hb values remained within the target range in 55.1% (27 of 49) of patients. The standard deviation of Hb values significantly decreased at 5 and 6 months (P=0.013 and P=0.047, respectively; 1 g/dL at 0 month, 0.7 g/dL at 5 months, and 0.7 g/dL at 6 months). Our algorithm also succeeded in suppressing cumulative doses of iron (≤800 mg) and decreasing the ferritin values significantly (P=0.011). There were no significant differences in erythropoiesis-stimulating agent doses between 0 and 6 months (P=0.357). Conclusion: Our anemia management algorithm successfully increased the number of patients in the target Hb range, significantly decreased the Hb standard deviation, suppressed cumulative doses of iron, and decreased ferritin values. These results suggest a better prognosis for hemodialysis patients. Further studies are required to evaluate our algorithm. 26. Competition between helimagnetic and ferroquadrupolar orderings in a monoaxial chiral magnet DyNi3Ga9 studied by resonant x-ray diffraction

Abstract

Successive phase transitions in a rare-earth monoaxial chiral magnet DyNi 3 Ga9 have been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction. Magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole degrees of freedom arising from the large angular moment of J = 15/2, in combination with the symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions and the crystal field anisotropy, give rise to competing ordered phases. We show that the antiferromagnetically coupled Dy moments in the c-plane form an incommensurate helimagnetic order with q ∼ (0, 0, 0.43) just below TN = 10 K, which further exhibits successive first-order transitions to the commensurate helimagnetic order with q = (0, 0, 0.5) at TN′ = 9 K, and to the canted antiferromagnetic order with q = (0, 0, 0) at TN′′ = 8.5 K. The relation of the magnetic helicity and the crystal chirality in DyNi3 Ga9 is also uniquely determined. Splitting of the (6, 0, 0) Bragg peak is observed below TN′′ , reflecting the lattice distortion due to the ferroquadrupole order. In the canted antiferromagnetic phase, a spin-flop transition takes place at 5 K when the temperature is swept in a weak magnetic field. We discuss these transitions from the viewpoint of competing energies described above.

42. Selective Phosphonylation of 5′-Adenosine Monophosphate (5′-AMP) via Pyrophosphite [PPi(III)]

Abstract

We describe here experiments which demonstrate the selective phospho-transfer from a plausibly prebiotic condensed phosphorus (P) salt, pyrophosphite [H2P2O52−; PPi(III)], to the phosphate group of 5′-adenosine mono phosphate (5′-AMP). We show further that this P-transfer process is accelerated both by divalent metal ions (M2+) and by organic co-factors such as acetate (AcO−). In this specific case of P-transfer from PPi(III) to 5′-AMP, we show a synergistic enhancement of transfer in the combined presence of M2+ & AcO−. Isotopic labelling studies demonstrate that hydrolysis of the phosphonylated 5′-AMP, [P(III)P(V)-5′-AMP], proceeds via nuceophilic attack of water at the Pi(III) terminus.
