Abstract: The dusty winds of cool evolved stars are a major contributor of the newly synthesised material enriching the Galaxy and future generations of stars. However, the details of the physics and chemistry behind dust formation and wind launching have yet to be pinpointed. Recent spatially resolved observations show the importance of gaining a more comprehensive view of the circumstellar chemistry, but a comparative study of the intricate interplay between chemistry and physics is still difficult because observational details such as frequencies and angular resolutions are rarely comparable. Aiming to overcome these deficiencies, ATOMIUM is an ALMA Large Programme to study the physics and chemistry of the circumstellar envelopes of a diverse set of oxygen-rich evolved stars under homogeneous observing conditions at three angular resolutions between ~0.02"-1.4". Here we summarize the molecular inventory of these sources, and the correlations between stellar parameters and molecular content. Seventeen oxygen-rich or S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars have been observed in several tunings with ALMA Band 6, targeting a range of molecules to probe the circumstellar envelope and especially the chemistry of dust formation close to the star. We systematically assigned the molecular carriers of the spectral lines and measured their spectroscopic parameters and the angular extent of the emission of each line from integrated intensity maps. Across the ATOMIUM sample, we detect 291 transitions of 24 different molecules and their isotopologues. This includes several first detections in oxygen-rich AGB/RSG stars: PO v=1, SO2 v1=1 and v2=2, and several high energy H2O transitions. We also find several first detections in S-type AGB stars: vibrationally excited HCN v2=2,3 and SiS v=4,5,6, as well as first detections of the molecules SiC, AlCl, and AlF in W Aql..., Comment: 19 pages plus appendices, forthcoming publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

2. ALMA spectral line and imaging survey of a low and a high mass-loss rate AGB star between 335 and 362 GHz

Abstract: A spectral line and imaging survey of the low mass-loss rate AGB star R Dor (Mdot ~ 1e-7 Msun/yr) and the high mass-loss rate AGB star IK Tau (Mdot ~5e-6 Msun/yr) was made with ALMA between 335 and 362 GHz at a spatial resolution of ~150 mas, corresponding to the locus of the main dust formation region of both targets. Some 200 spectral features from 15 molecules (and their isotopologues) were observed, including rotational lines in both the ground and vibrationally excited states. Detected species include the gaseous precursors of dust grains such as SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, and TiO2. We present a spectral atlas for both stars and the parameters of all detected spectral features. A clear dichotomy for the sulphur chemistry is seen: while CS, SiS, SO, and SO2 are abundantly present in IK Tau, only SO and SO2 are detected in R Dor. Also other species such as NaCl, NS, AlO, and AlOH display a completely different behaviour. From some selected species, the minor isotopologues can be used to assess the isotopic ratios. The channel maps of many species prove that both large and small-scale inhomogeneities persist in the inner wind of both stars in the form of blobs, arcs, and/or a disk. The high sensitivity of ALMA allows us to spot the impact of these correlated density structures in the spectral line profiles. The spectral lines often display a half width at zero intensity much larger than expected from the terminal velocity, v_inf, previously derived for both objects (36 km/s versus v_inf ~17.7 km/s for IK Tau and 23 km/s versus v_inf ~5.5 km/s for R Dor). Both a more complex 3D morphology and a more forceful wind acceleration of the (underlying) isotropic wind can explain this trend. The formation of fractal grains in the region beyond ~400 mas can potentially account for the latter scenario. 3. Tracing the phase transition of Al-bearing species from molecules to dust in AGB winds. Constraining the presence of gas-phase (Al2O3)n clusters

Abstract: (abbreviated) We aim to constrain the dust formation histories in the winds of oxygen-rich AGB stars. We have obtained ALMA observations with a spatial resolution of 120x150 mas tracing the dust formation region of a low mass-loss rate and a high mass-loss rate AGB star, R Dor and IK Tau. Emission line profiles of AlO, AlOH and AlCl are detected and are used to derive a lower limit of atomic aluminium incorporated in molecules. We show that the gas-phase aluminium chemistry is completely different in both stars, with a remarkable difference in the AlO and AlOH abundance stratification. The amount of aluminium locked up in these 3 molecules is small, <=1.1e-7, for both stars, i.e. only <=2% of the total aluminium budget. This leaves ample of room for aluminium to be incorporated in grains. A fundamental result is that AlO and AlOH, being the direct precursors of alumina grains, are detected well beyond the onset of the dust condensation proving that the aluminium oxide condensation cycle is not fully efficient. The ALMA observations allow us to quantitatively assess the current generation of theoretical dynamical-chemical models for AGB winds. We discuss how the current proposed scenario of aluminium dust condensation for low mass-loss rate AGB stars at a distance of ~1.5 Rstar, in particular for the stars R Dor and W Hya, poses a challenge if one wishes to explain both the dust spectral features in the spectral energy distribution (SED), in interferometric data, and in polarized light signal. In particular, the estimated grain temperature of Al2O3 is too high for the grains to retain their amorphous structure. We propose that large gas-phase (Al2O3)n-clusters (n>34) can be the potential agents of the broad 11 micron feature in the SED and in the interferometric data and we explain how these large clusters can be formed., Comment: 21 pages, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), figures at reduced resolution in arxiv paper; full resolution in Astronomy & Astrophysics paper

Abstract: In May of 2011, NASA selected the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) asteroid sample return mission as the third mission in the New Frontiers program. The other two New Frontiers missions are New Horizons, which explored Pluto during a flyby in July 2015 and is on its way for a flyby of Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, and Juno, an orbiting mission that is studying the origin, evolution, and internal structure of Jupiter. The spacecraft departed for near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu aboard an United Launch Alliance Atlas V 411 evolved expendable launch vehicle at 7:05 p.m. EDT on September 8, 2016, on a seven-year journey to return samples from Bennu. The spacecraft is on an outbound-cruise trajectory that will result in a rendezvous with Bennu in August 2018. The science instruments on the spacecraft will survey Bennu to measure its physical, geological, and chemical properties, and the team will use these data to select a site on the surface to collect at least 60 g of asteroid regolith. The team will also analyze the remote-sensing data to perform a detailed study of the sample site for context, assess Bennus resource potential, refine estimates of its impact probability with Earth, and provide ground-truth data for the extensive astronomical data set collected on this asteroid. Abstract: Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

7. Low Risk Technique for Sample Acquisition from Remote and Hazardous Sites on a Comet

Abstract: This paper describes a mission comet sampling strategy, known as CORSAIR (COmet Rendezvous, Sample Acquisition, Investigation, and Return), which was proposed for NASA New Frontiers 2017. The proposal was led by Applied Physics Lab (APL) with partners Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). The mission concept is to launch a projectile from a satellite that is capable of gathering a 300 cc sample. The projectile is tethered and is reeled back to the spacecraft after gathering the sample. Once back at the spacecraft, a robotic manipulator extracts the sample cartridge and places the cartridge into an earth return vehicle (ERV). This method has the following favorable characteristics: 1. Places the mission at minimal risk by isolating the spacecraft from the comet 2. Allows access to remote and otherwise inaccessible locations 3. Permits deep penetration into the surface

Abstract: OSIRIS-REx will return pristine samples of carbonaceous asteroid Bennu. This article describes how pristine was defined based on expectations of Bennu and on a realistic understanding of what is achievable with a constrained schedule and budget, and how that definition flowed to requirements and implementation. To return a pristine sample, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sampling hardware was maintained at level 100 A/2 and less than 180 ng/cm(exp 2) of amino acids and hydrazine on the sampler head through precision cleaning, control of materials, and vigilance. Contamination is further characterized via witness material exposed to the spacecraft assembly and testing environment as well as in space. This characterization provided knowledge of the expected background and will be used in conjunction with archived spacecraft components for comparison with the samples when they are delivered to Earth for analysis. Most of all, the cleanliness of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft was achieved through communication among scientists, engineers, managers, and technicians.

9. Formation Mechanism of Iron-Rich Olivine: Experimental Constrains into Early Fluid-Assisted Hydration and Dehydration Processes on Asteroids

Abstract: Iron-rich olivine is one of the major minerals in the matrices of unequilibrated ordinary (UOCs) and carbonaceous (CV, CK, CO) chondrites whose petrologic type is >3.1. There has been an extensive discussion in the literature as to the formation mechanism of these olivines; however, their origin is poorly understood. The formation of ferroan olivine during hydrothermal alteration has been demonstrated to be thermodynamically viable. The stability of ferroan olivine is highly dependent on several variables, including temperature, water/ rock (W/R) ratio, pressure, oxygen fugacity, and bulk rock composition. So far, hydrothermal alteration experiments have not been successful at forming FeO-rich olivines with the compositions and textures observed in the matrices of chondrites. Therefore, understanding the formation conditions of FeO-rich olivines remains a key problem to explain the effects of hydrothermal alteration on chondrite matrices.

Abstract: The COSIMA instrument onboard the Rosetta spacecraft collected and analyzed samples of individual particles from the coma of Comet67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Initial results of the analysis of several particles have been presented elsewhere while analyses of the organic component of the dust particles has been shown to compare favor ably to laboratory spectra of IOM extracted from the Orguil and Murchison meteorites. Here we will compare the spectra of the same two particles to laboratory spectra of organic grain coatings produced via Surface Mediated Reactions of CO, H2 and N2 on amorphous iron silicate grains.

Abstract: The OSIRIS-REx mission (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security Regolith Explorer) is the third NASA New Frontiers mission. It is scheduled for launch in 2016. The primary objective of the mission is to return at least 60 g of "pristine" material from the B-type near- Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, which is spectrally similar to organic-rich CI or CM meteorites [1]. The study of these samples will advance our understanding of materials available for the origin of life on Earth or elsewhere. The spacecraft will rendezvous with Bennu in 2018 and spend at least a year characterizing the asteroid before executing a maneuver to recover a sample of regolith in the touch-and-go sample acquisition mechanism (TAGSAM). The TAGSAM and sample is stowed in the sample return capsule (SRC) and returned to Earth in 2023.

Abstract: During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu's immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission's safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu's surface to an upper limit of 150 g s-1 averaged over 34 min. Bennu's disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu's rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10-6 degrees day-2, likely due to the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

Abstract: International audience; Polarimetric observations of cometary comae may be used to infer dust properties through experimental simu- lations. Mixtures of fluffy silicates and carbon were successfully studied and confirmed the results from remote observations. Different space missions (e.g. Stardust, Deep Impact, EPOXI), have revealed complementary information on the dust particles, while the Rosetta mission to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is still yielding incomparable data on the structure and composition of dust particles (Schulz et al., 2015; Rotundi et al., 2015). Rosetta also confirmed, the preperihelion dust properties found by remote observations. In its first phase, Rosetta finds various structures for individual dust particles: e.g. (i) very fluffy and large aggregates captured on the plates of COSIMA (more than 50 micron pure carbonaceous compounds); (ii) 100-1000 micron-sized particles, which dominate the dust light scattering observations (GIADA and OSIRIS).Laboratory simulations of light scattering by cometary analog particles help to disentangle different physical properties by comparison with observational data. The linear polarization depends on the geometry of the observations (phase angle), the particle properties (size distributions, structures, refractive indices) and on the wavelength of observation. Our PROGRA2 light scattering experiment is perfectly adapted to study these large particles, levitating in micro-gravity or lifted by an air-draught.The aim of this study is to simulate differences between the period of observations (perihelion distance, seasonal effect), regions in the coma or the classes of comets. We had to obtain realistic compositions, materials such as silicates, amorphous carbon and different carbonaceous compounds. Organics are produced in our laboratories by different methods: from liquids (poly-HCN), or from molecular dissociation in N2:CO:CH4:H2:H2O gas mixtures in different ratios by an electric discharge where electrons from the plasma initiate gas-phase chemistry. Finally clear to dark brown solid particles are formed in the gas phase with the PAMPRE/LATMOS instrument and dark solids are deposited on the walls in the nebulotron/CRPG-CNRS. The organics differ in size distribution and composition depending on their formation conditions. Their elemental composition e.g. N related to C depends on their formation conditions and their colour is related to chemical functional groups. The different organics are analyzed with SEM, TEM, IR and Raman spectroscopy. Some are heated ex-situ. To build cometary analogs, organics are mixed with silicates (e.g. NASA and CRPG) or coat them (NASA). Their optical properties are compared using the PROGRA2 experiment and the results are tentatively related to their composition.

22. EVIDENCE OF WATER RETENTION AND LOSS IN MG-SILICATE SMOKES.

Abstract: Introduction: Water ice forms in the interstellar clouds along with preexisting silicate grains forming amorphous structures that sublimate and re-condense with temperature changes, developing the precursors to protoplanetary disks [1]. Throughout the formation process, planetesimals inside the snowline tend to outgas any H2O that may have been trapped in the silicate grains. This leads to a depletion of H2O in terrestrial planets. However, the simplicity ends there because planets forming in regions where adsorbed H2O has been lost, but absorbed water is still locked into the silicate grains, can still contain a significant amount of water. In fact, analysis of basaltic magma shows that H2O content was at least 3 wt.% H2O or higher [2]. Knowing the temperatures at which adsorbed, and absorbed, H2O leaves silicate grains is crucial in understanding planetary formation, transfer of H2O across the solar system, sequestration of gases, and habitability, amongst others. Laboratory experiments can better constrain the temperatures at which H2O remains incorporated in planetary formation. Methods: Amorphous Mg-silicate smokes, similarly synthesized in procedures by Nuth, et al. 2002 [3], was used for this study. These were chosen because the formation for the smokes are indicative of high-temperature processes in the circumstellar outflows. The amorphous Mg-silicate samples were powdered and placed in the sample holder of a AABSPEC #2000-A multimode system. The cell was pumped under vacuum to pressures of 9.3e-6 bar and initial spectral measurements were taken at 300 K. Subsequent measurements were taken in 50K increments up to 1000K. Each measurement consisted of 1000 scans with a resolution of 4 cm-1 to ensure high resolution data. Spectra was collected using a Mattson RS-10000 Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometer operating in the near and mid-IR regimes (2 m - 17 m). The data for each sample was normalized and plotted to demonstrate the change in features with increasing temperature. Results: The preliminary results of this investigation indicate that the solid state H2O contained within the smokes is removed from the sample between 725 and 750K. Initial spectra of the Mg-silicate smoke sample before it was heated up clearly displayed the 3µm and 4.4µm water bands. The bands are broad and relatively smooth, indicating that they are solid-state absorption features. The characteristic 10µm silicate feature is also visible, although it is very weak compared to the intensity of the other bands. At 700K the spectra show the H2O still in the solid-state at around 3µm and 4.4µm. In the 750K measurement, H2O emission features replace the solid state features. Emission features that were present in the spectra taken at higher temperatures were diminished as the temperature increased, until they disappeared almost completely at 950K. After the sample was heated up to temperatures of 1000K and cooled back down to 300K, in 100K increments, the emission features returned, all while retaining the 10µm feature. Post-ramp spectra of the silicate smoke was collected after it had been cooled down to 300K. The spectra shows the water bands in the same position, but after being subjected to heat, the bands are now emission features, indicating that the H2O being measured is in the gas phase. The 10µm silicate feature remains and is more pronounced, suggesting that the chemical integrity of the sample remained intact over the course of the heating run. The solid-state H2O features did not return, indicating that the H2O in the samples had been removed completely. Conclusions & Future Work: Preliminary results from this study suggest that the samples started losing their solid-state H2O features between 725 and 750K. This suggests that planetesimals forming within the snow line could have a higher water content. The procedures outlined in this abstract will be repeated in order to clearly quantify the temperature at which water is released from the amorphous smokes. Further work will also involve kinetic studies to determine the activation energy of the H2O in order to determine exactly how much water can be released, and how long it would take to release it. Abstract: Objectives: Physician documentation plays a central role in the delivery of safe patient care. It describes a physician's clinical decision-making and supports essential communication between healthcare providers within the patient's circle of care. Good documentation can potentially also decrease a physician's medico-legal risk. This study provides examples of documentation issues attributed to physicians practicing emergency medicine as identified by peer experts in civil legal actions, regulatory authority complaints (College) and hospital complaints (collectively, medico-legal cases) in Canada., Methods: We conducted a descriptive study and content analysis of medico-legal cases involving emergency department physicians from a national repository at the Canadian Medical Protective Association. Cases with peer expert criticism of an emergency physician's documentation, which were closed between 2016 and 2020, and occurred in an emergency department were included in our analysis., Results: Of the 1628 cases involving emergency medicine, our inclusion criteria identified that absent or insufficiently detailed documentation was present in 24% of cases (391/1,628). A detailed review of 20% of the cases (79/391), selected randomly, found that documentation issues were most often associated with the assessment and investigation stage of care. This pertained to documenting details of the clinical examination, relevant medical history, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis., Conclusions: For physicians practicing emergency medicine, criticism of documentation was frequently observed in medico-legal cases. Based on the findings of this study and the expert criticism related to documentation, emergency medicine physicians may consider reflecting upon their documentation of the care provided to determine if their documentation provides a clear and accurate chronicle of the care and the rationale for their clinical decisions., (© 2023. 28. Patterns and trends among physicians-in-training named in civil legal cases: a retrospective analysis of Canadian Medical Protective Association data from 1993 to 2017.

Abstract: Background: Medico-legal data show opportunities to improve safe medical care; little is published on the experience of physicians-in-training with medical malpractice. The purpose of this study was to examine closed civil legal cases involving physicians-in-training over time and provide novel insights on case and physicians characteristics., Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of closed civil legal cases at the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), a mutual medico-legal defence organization for more than 105 000 physicians, representing an estimated 95% of physicians in Canada. Eligible cases involved at least 1 physician-in-training and were closed between 1993 and 2017 (for time trends) or 2008 and 2017 (for descriptive analyses). We analyzed case rates over time using Poisson regression and the annualized change rate. Descriptive analyses addressed case duration, medico-legal outcome and patient harm. We explored physician specialties and practice characteristics in a subset of cases., Results: Over a 25-year period (1993-2017), 4921 physicians-in-training were named in 2951 closed civil legal cases, and case rates decreased significantly (β = -0.04, 95% confidence interval -0.05 to -0.03, where β was the 1-year difference in log case rates). The annualized change rate was -1.1% per year. Between 2008 and 2017, 1901 (4.1%) of 45 967 physicians-in-training were named in 1107 civil legal cases. Cases with physicians-in-training generally involved more severe patient harm than cases without physicians-in-training. In a subgroup with available information ( n = 951), surgical specialties were named most often ( n = 531, 55.8%)., Interpretation: The rate of civil legal cases involving physicians-in-training has diminished over time, but more recent cases featured severe patient harm and death. 29. The medico-legal helpline: A content analysis of postgraduate medical trainee advice calls.

Abstract: Context: Available literature exploring medical liability and postgraduate medical education consistently posits that postgraduate trainees worry about their exposure to medico-legal liability. This assumption has formed the basis for research and curriculum development., Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the encounters that lead physicians-in-training to seek external medico-legal guidance. We sought to provide empirical evidence on trends and themes related to medico-legal advice requests from physicians-in-training., Methods: Our primary dataset consisted of records of calls from physicians-in-training to the medico-legal helpline of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), a national mutual defence organisation providing medico-legal advice and liability protection for over 95% of Canada's physicians. We conducted a trend analysis of the frequency of calls for advice over 10 years from physician-in-training compared with non-trainee physicians. Furthermore, we performed a content analysis of calls made over the most recent 2 years (2016-2017) to elucidate the concerns that led to trainees seeking medico-legal advice., Results: The 10-year trend analysis revealed that the annual growth in the number of physician-in-training advice calls (8.8%) exceeded other CMPA physician groups and was in excess of trainee population growth over the same period. The content analysis identified four core themes: managing confidential information, complex care situations, academic matters and patient safety incidents., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that trainees are asking questions about their medico-legal liability with increasing frequency. This study contributes new evidence on the issues that lead to trainees seeking help. We believe that understanding trainees' medico-legal advice requests will support medical educators to tailor quality improvement education to learners' needs., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd and The Association for the Study of Medical Education.)
