Abstract

In this paper we consider the nonparametric estimation of density and regression functions with non-negative support using a gamma kernel procedure introduced by Chen (2000). Strong uniform consistency and asymptotic normality of the corresponding estimators are established under a general ergodic assumption on the data generation process. Our results generalize those of Shi and Song (2016), obtained in the classic i.i.d. framework, and the works of Bouezmarni and Rombouts (2008, 2010b) and Gospodinov and Hirukawa (2007) for mixing time series., Comment: 29 pages

Abstract

The article discusses the inter-rater reliability of the International Hidradenitis Suppurativa Severity Scoring System (IHS4) as a primary outcome measurement instrument for large clinical studies in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The study involved 31 dermatology residents from 16 countries who evaluated 10 HS patients with varying disease severity. The results showed that the IHS4 had excellent inter-rater reliability among the raters, indicating its suitability for use in large clinical studies. However, the evaluation of HS lesions without weighting and the evaluation of inflammatory nodules and abscesses only led to reduced reliability. The article concludes that the IHS4 is a reliable instrument for assessing HS in clinical studies. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

In this work it is analyzed the combustion of pyrolysis gas to produce the thermal energy required in biomass pyrolysis process. For this purpose, the pyrolysis vapor composition was obtained from experimental data using a bench scale fixed reactor. The biomasses used in this work were acacia, gorse and eucalyptus sawdust. Reactant and product species, in pyrolysis and combustion processes, had theirenthalpy of formation and sensible enthalpy variationsevaluated in order to quantify the species absolute enthalpy and mixture total enthalpy. Knowing the inlet and outlet mixture total enthalpy, the heat required forthe pyrolysis process was determined. Similarly, for the combustion process, knowing the inlet total enthalpy and the amount of heat needed to the pyrolysis process, the exhaust gas total enthalpy was determined.The objective here was to determine the amount of pyrolysis vapors thatneeded to be burned toprovide the minimum amount of heat for the pyrolysis process at distinct operating conditions. The simulations showed that a minimum of 30%, in molar basis, of the pyrolysis vapors is need to be burned. The equivalence ratios adopted for the combustion process are in the range of 0.6 to 0.8. Adiabatic and exhaust gas temperatures in the combustion chamber were evaluated and are in the range of 600K to1200K.Regarding the combustion reactordimensions, an analysis involving the combustion gas residence time as a function of the pyrolysis vaporsfraction burned, equivalence ratio and temperature was used. Abstract

Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Enhancement Through the Power of Big Data in Europe (PIONEER) is a European network of excellence for big data in prostate cancer, consisting of 32 private and public stakeholders from 9 countries across Europe. Launched by the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 and part of the Big Data for Better Outcomes Programme (BD4BO), the overarching goal of PIONEER is to provide high-quality evidence on prostate cancer management by unlocking the potential of big data. The project has identified critical evidence gaps in prostate cancer care, via a detailed prioritization exercise including all key stakeholders. By standardizing and integrating existing high-quality and multidisciplinary data sources from patients with prostate cancer across different stages of the disease, the resulting big data will be assembled into a single innovative data platform for research. Based on a unique set of methodologies, PIONEER aims to advance the field of prostate cancer care with a particular focus on improving prostate-cancer-related outcomes, health system efficiency by streamlining patient management, and the quality of health and social care delivered to all men with prostate cancer and their families worldwide.Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Enhancement Through the Power of Big Data in Europe (PIONEER) is a European network of excellence for big data in prostate cancer, consisting of 32 private and public stakeholders from 9 countries across Europe. In this Perspectives article, the authors introduce the PIONEER project and describe its aims and plans for ultimately improving prostate cancer care through the use of big data.

Abstract

International audience; The casein micelle (CM) have been described as a protein assembly held together by interactions between phosphoryl groups from the protein moieties, and several internal calcium phosphate nanoclusters (CCPs). While the presence of protein inhomogeneities at the small scale, sequestering the CCPs, has been widely accepted, the presence of medium scale inhomogeneities, the so-called "Hard" regions, and its relationship with the CCPs, has been object of debate. In the present work, solid state NMR and SAXS data have been combined to study the correlation between the removal of CCPs and the structural modification of the micelle. A << native >> sample and three different demineralized ones; 5% (DM-05), 10% (DM-10), and 25% (DM-25) of calcium in relation with the "native", have been analyzed. NMR data show that the reduction in the total amount of calcium and phosphorous ions (-5%, -10% and -25% respectively) in the samples is not always equivalent to the loss of CCPs as measured by the decrease of the amount of colloidal P-31 (-15 and -17% and -25% respectively) in the samples. NMR data also indicate, that demineralization induces the total depletion of some CCP while leaving the remaining cluster in a rather "native" like structure. SAXS data show a good correlation between the amount of P-31 loss measured by NMR and the decreases in intensity for the SAXS spectral features associated with the nanoclusters. Finally, SAXS data show the demineralization induces a decrease in the amount of the larger inhomogeneities in the micelle (the so called "Hard" regions). However, this decrease is not directly correlated to the decrease in the amount of CCPs (as measured by SAXS and NMR) indicating that these "Hard" regions may be, at least partially, maintained by a large protein-protein interaction network. The data and results are discussed and compared with different structural models of casein micelle.

Abstract

Objective A persistent low-grade inflammatory state has been described in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in the interictal period. Adipokines are cytokines produced by the adipose tissue that can influence inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the plasma levels of adipokines in patients with TLE in comparison with controls. In addition, we sought to investigate whether the levels of adipokines were associated with clinical parameters in TLE. Methods Forty patients with TLE and 40 controls were enrolled in this study. All participants were subjected to clinical assessment that included the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Peripheral blood was drawn, and plasma levels of adipokines (adiponectin, leptin, and resistin) were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Results People with TLE presented higher leptin and lower adiponectin and resistin levels in comparison with controls. The levels of these adipokines correlated negatively with illness length but not with other clinical parameters. In a binary logistic regression model, higher leptin and lower adiponectin levels remained as significant predictors of TLE diagnosis. Conclusions These results corroborate the view that TLE is a multisystemic condition associated with low-grade inflammation.
