Search

We report on the development of thermal detectors based on large-size tellurium dioxide crystals (45x45x45 mm), containing tellurium enriched in $^{130}$Te to about 91%, for the CROSS double-beta decay experiment. A powder used for the crystals growth was additionally purified by the directional solidification method, resulting in the reduction of the concentration of impurities by a factor 10, to a few ppm of the total concentration of residual elements (the main impurity is Fe). The purest part of the ingot (the first ~200 mm, about 80% of the total length of the cylindrical part of the ingot) was determined by scanning segregation profiles of impurities and used for the $^{130}$TeO$_2$ powder production with no evidence of re-contamination. The crystal growth was verified with precursors produced from powder with natural Te isotopic composition, and two small-size (20x20x10 mm) samples were tested at a sea-level laboratory showing high bolometric and spectrometric performance together with acceptable $^{210}$Po content (below 10 mBq/kg). This growth method was then applied for the production of six large cubic $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals and 4 of them were taken randomly to be characterized at the Canfranc underground laboratory, in the CROSS-dedicated low-background cryogenic facility. Two $^{130}$TeO$_2$ samples were coated with a thin, $O$(100 nm), metal film in form of Al layer (on 4 sides) or AlPd grid (on a single side) to investigate the possibility to tag surface events by pulse-shape discrimination. Similarly to the small natural precursors, large-volume $^{130}$TeO$_2$ bolometers show high performance and even better internal purity ($^{210}$Po activity $\sim$ 1 mBq/kg, while activities of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra are below 0.01 mBq/kg), satisfying requirements for the CROSS and, potentially, next-generation experiments., Comment: Submitted to JINST; 22 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. Using CaWO$_4$ crystals as cryogenic calorimeters, the CRESST experiment searches for nuclear recoils caused by the scattering of potential Dark Matter particles. A reliable identification of a potential signal crucially depends on an accurate background model. In this work we introduce an improved normalisation method for CRESST's model of the electromagnetic backgrounds. Spectral templates, based on Geant4 simulations, are normalised via a Bayesian likelihood fit to experimental background data. Contrary to our previous work, no assumption of partial secular equilibrium is required, which results in a more robust and versatile applicability. Furthermore, considering the correlation between all background components allows us to explain 82.7% of the experimental background within [1 keV, 40 keV], an improvement of 18.6% compared to our previous method., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, submitted to EPJC

We report on the results obtained with the global CUPID-0 background model, which combines the data collected in the two measurement campaigns for a total exposure of 16.6 kg$\times$yr. We identify with improved precision the background sources in the region of interest for neutrinoless double $\beta$-decay, making more solid the foundations for the background budget of the next-generation CUPID experiment. Relying on the excellent data reconstruction, we measure the two-neutrino double $\beta$-decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with unprecedented accuracy: $T_{1/2}^{2\nu} = [8.69 \pm 0.05 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.09}_{-0.06} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$.

$^{180m}$Ta is the longest-lived metastable state presently known. Its decay has not been observed yet. In this work, we report a new result on the decay of \mTa obtained with a $2015.12$-g tantalum sample measured for $527.7$ d with an ultra-low background HPGe detector in the STELLA laboratory of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), in Italy. Before the measurement, the sample has been stored deep-underground for ten years, resulting in subdominant background contributions from cosmogenically activated $^{182}$Ta. We observe no signal in the regions of interest and set half-life limits on the process for the two channels EC and $\beta^-$: $T_{1/2,~\mathrm{EC}} > 1.6 \times 10^{18}$ yr and $T_{1/2,~\beta^-} > 1.1\times 10^{18}$ yr ($90$\% C.\,I.), respectively. We also set the limit on the $\gamma$ de-excitation / IC channel: $T_{1/2,~\mathrm{IC}} > 4.1 \times 10^{15}$ yr ($90$\% C.\,I.). These are, as of now, the most stringent bounds on the decay of $^{180m}$Ta worldwide. Finally, we test the hypothetical scenarios of de-excitation of $^{180m}$Ta by cosmological Dark Matter and constrain new parameter space for strongly-interacting dark-matter particle with mass up to $10^5$ GeV., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

The first detailed study on the performance of a ZnO-based cryogenic scintillating bolometer as a detector to search for rare processes in zinc isotopes was performed. A 7.2 g ZnO low-temperature detector, containing more than 80\% of zinc in its mass, exhibits good energy resolution of baseline noise 1.0--2.7 keV FWHM at various working temperatures resulting in a low-energy threshold for the experiment, 2.0--6.0 keV. The light yield for $\beta$/$\gamma$ events was measured as 1.5(3) keV/MeV, while it varies for $\alpha$ particles in the range of 0.2--3.0 keV/MeV. The detector demonstrate an effective identification of the $\beta$/$\gamma$ events from $\alpha$ events using time-properties of only heat signals. %(namely, Rise time parameter). The radiopurity of the ZnO crystal was evaluated using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, an ultra-low-background High Purity Ge $\gamma$-spectrometer, and bolometric measurements. Only limits were set at the level of $\mathcal{O}$(1--100) mBq/kg on activities of \Nuc{K}{40}, \Nuc{Cs}{137} and daughter nuclides from the U/Th natural decay chains. The total internal $\alpha$-activity was calculated to be 22(2) mBq/kg, with a major contribution caused by 6(1) mBq/kg of \Nuc{Th}{232} and 12(2) mBq/kg of \Nuc{U}{234}. Limits on double beta decay (DBD) processes in \Nuc{Zn}{64} and \Nuc{Zn}{70} isotopes were set on the level of $\mathcal{O}(10^{17}$--$10^{18})$ yr for various decay modes profiting from 271 h of acquired background data in the above-ground lab. This study shows a good potential for ZnO-based scintillating bolometers to search for DBD processes of Zn isotopes, especially in \Nuc{Zn}{64}, with the most prominent spectral features at $\sim$10--20 keV, like the two neutrino double electron capture. CUPID is a next-generation bolometric experiment aiming at searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay with ~250 kg of isotopic mass of $^{100}$Mo. It will operate at $\sim$10 mK in a cryostat currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating bolometers consisting of $^{100}$Mo-enriched Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals, facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed, we have measured 70--90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained outstanding energy resolutions at the 356 keV line from a $^{133}$Ba source with one light detector achieving 0.71(5) keV FWHM, which is -- to our knowledge -- the best ever obtained when compared to $\gamma$ detectors of any technology in this energy range., Comment: Prepared for submission to JINST; 16 pages, 7 figures, and 1 table

An array of twelve 0.28 kg lithium molybdate (LMO) low-temperature bolometers equipped with 16 bolometric Ge light detectors, aiming at optimization of detector structure for CROSS and CUPID double-beta decay experiments, was constructed and tested in a low-background pulse-tube-based cryostat at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. Performance of the scintillating bolometers was studied depending on the size of phonon NTD-Ge sensors glued to both LMO and Ge absorbers, shape of the Ge light detectors (circular vs. square, from two suppliers), in different light collection conditions (with and without reflector, with aluminum coated LMO crystal surface). The scintillating bolometer array was operated over 8 months in the low-background conditions that allowed to probe a very low, $\mu$Bq/kg, level of the LMO crystals radioactive contamination by $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra., Comment: Prepared for submission to JINST; 23 pages, 9 figures, and 4 tables

A search for rare decays of gadolinium isotopes was performed with an ultra-low background high-purity germanium detector at Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (Italy). A 198 g Gd$_2$O$_3$ powder sample was measured for 63.8 d with a total Gd exposure of 12.6 kg$\times$d. $^{152}$Gd is the most promising isotope for resonant neutrinoless double electron capture which could significantly enhance the decay rate over other neutrinoless double beta decay processes. The half-life for this decay was constrained to $>4.2\times10^{12}$ yr (90\% credibility). This limit is still orders of magnitude away from theoretical predictions but it is the first established limit on the transition paving the way for future experiments. In addition, other rare alpha and double beta decay modes were investigated in $^{152}$Gd, $^{154}$Gd, and $^{160}$Gd with half-life limits in the range of $10^{17-20}$ yr., Comment: fixed typos and minor text changes

A 510 day long-term measurement of a 45.3 g platinum foil acting as the sample and high voltage contact in an ultra-low-background high purity germanium detector was performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). The data was used for a detailed study of double beta decay modes in natural platinum isotopes. Limits are set in the range $\mathcal{O}(10^{14} - 10^{19})$ yr (90% C.L.) for several double beta decay transitions to excited states confirming, and partially extending existing limits. The highest sensitivity of the measurement, greater than $10^{19}$ yr, was achieved for the two neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decay modes of the isotope $^{198}$Pt. Additionally, novel limits for inelastic dark matter scattering on $^{195}$Pt are placed up to mass splittings of approximately 500 keV. We present the first search for the Majoron-emitting modes of the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta\chi_0$) using scintillating cryogenic calorimeters. We analysed the CUPID-0 Phase I data using a Bayesian approach to reconstruct the background sources activities, and evaluate the potential contribution of the $^{82}$Se $0\nu\beta\beta\chi_0$. We considered several possible theoretical models which predict the existence of a Majoron-like boson coupling to the neutrino. The energy spectra arising from the emission of such bosons in the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay have spectral indices $n=$ 1, 2, 3 or 7. We found no evidence of any of these decay modes, setting a lower limit (90% of credibility interval) on the half-life of 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ yr in the case of $n=$ 1, 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 2, 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 3 and 2.2 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ yr for $n=$ 7. These are the best limits on the $0\nu\beta\beta\chi_0$ half-life of the $^{82}$Se, and demonstrate the potentiality of the CUPID-0 technology in this field.

CRESST is a leading direct detection sub-$\mathrm{GeVc}^{-2}$ dark matter experiment. During its second phase, cryogenic bolometers were used to detect nuclear recoils off the $\mathrm{CaWO}_4$ target crystal nuclei. The previously established electromagnetic background model relies on secular equilibrium (SE) assumptions. In this work, a validation of SE is attempted by comparing two likelihood-based normalisation results using a recently developed spectral template normalisation method based on Bayesian likelihood. CUPID-0, an array of Zn$^{82}$Se cryogenic calorimeters, was the first medium-scale demonstrator of the scintillating bolometers technology. The first project phase (March 2017 - December 2018) allowed the most stringent limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of the isotope of interest, $^{82}$Se, to be set. After a six months long detector upgrade, CUPID-0 began its second and last phase (June 2019 - February 2020). In this letter, we describe the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{82}$Se with a total exposure (phase I + II) of 8.82 kg$\times$yr of isotope. We set a limit on the half-life of $^{82}$Se to the ground state of $^{82}$Kr of T$^{0\nu}_{1/2}$($^{82}$Se)$>$ 4.6$\times \mathrm{10}^{24}$ yr (90\% credible interval), corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass m$_{\beta\beta} <$ (263 -- 545) meV. We also set the most stringent lower limits on the neutrinoless decays of $^{82}$Se to the 0$_1^+$, 2$_1^+$ and 2$_2^+$ excited states of $^{82}$Kr, finding 1.8$\times$10$^{23}$ yr, 3.0$\times$10$^{23}$ yr, 3.2$\times$10$^{23}$ yr (90$\%$ credible interval) respectively.

Cerium-doped Lutetium-Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate (LYSO:Ce)is one of the most widely used Cerium-doped Lutetium based scintillation crystals. Initially developed for medical detectors it rapidly became attractive for High Energy Particle Physics (HEP) applications, especially in the frame of high luminosity particle colliders. In this paper, a comprehensive and systematic study of LYSO:Ce ($[Lu_{(1-x)}Y_x]_2SiO_5$:$Ce$) crystals is presented. It involves for the first time a large number of crystal samples (180) of the same size from a dozen of producers.The study consists of a comparative characterization of LYSO:Ce crystal products available on the market by mechanical, optical and scintillation measurements and aims specifically, to investigate key parameters of timing applications for HEP., Comment: 38 pages, 22 figures

Current experiments to search for broken lepton-number symmetry through the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$) provide the most stringent limits on the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the effective Majorana neutrino mass ($m_{\beta\beta}$). The next-generation experiments will focus on the sensitivity to the $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$ half-life of $\mathcal{O}(10^{27}$--$10^{28}$~years$)$ and $m_{\beta\beta}\lesssim15$~meV, which would provide complete coverage of the so-called Inverted Ordering region of the neutrino mass parameter space. By taking advantage of recent technological breakthroughs, new, future calorimetric experiments at the 1-ton scale can increase the sensitivity by at least another order of magnitude, exploring the large fraction of the parameter space that corresponds to the Normal neutrino mass ordering. In case of a discovery, such experiments could provide important insights toward a new understanding of the mechanism of $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$. We present here a series of projects underway that will provide advancements in background reduction, cryogenic readout, and physics searches beyond $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$, all moving toward the next-to-next generation CUPID-1T detector., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of $\alpha$ particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 $\pm$ 0.2) keV FWHM at the $Q$-value of $^{100}$Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors' mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an $\alpha$ particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of the utmost importance for rare-event searches and thus critical to the XENONnT experiment. Results of an extensive radioassay program are reported, in which material samples have been screened with gamma-ray spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and $^{222}$Rn emanation measurements. Furthermore, the cleanliness procedures applied to remove or mitigate surface contamination of detector materials are described. Screening results, used as inputs for a XENONnT Monte Carlo simulation, predict a reduction of materials background ($\sim$17%) with respect to its predecessor XENON1T. Through radon emanation measurements, the expected $^{222}$Rn activity concentration in XENONnT is determined to be 4.2$\,(^{+0.5}_{-0.7})\,\mu$Bq/kg, a factor three lower with respect to XENON1T. This radon concentration will be further suppressed by means of the novel radon distillation system.

The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

We present new results on the radiopurity of a 3.4-kg NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator operated in the SABRE proof-of-principle detector setup. The amount of potassium contamination, determined by the direct counting of radioactive $^{40}$K, is found to be $2.2\pm1.5$ ppb, lowest ever achieved for NaI(Tl) crystals. With the active veto, the average background rate in the crystal in the 1-6 keV energy region-of-interest (ROI) is $1.20\pm0.05$ counts/day/kg/keV, which is a breakthrough since the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. Our background model indicates that the rate is dominated by $^{210}$Pb and that about half of this contamination is located in the PTFE reflector. We discuss ongoing developments of the crystal manufacture aimed at the further reduction of the background, including data from purification by zone refining. A projected background rate lower than $\sim$0.2 counts/day/kg/keV in the ROI is within reach. These results represent a benchmark for the development of next-generation NaI(Tl) detector arrays for the direct detection of dark matter particles.

Rare event physics demands very detailed background control, high-performance detectors, and custom analysis strategies. Cryogenic calorimeters combine all these ingredients very effectively, representing a promising tool for next-generation experiments. CUPID-0 is one of the most advanced examples of such a technique, having demonstrated its potential with several results obtained with limited exposure. In this paper, we present a further application. Exploiting the analysis of delayed coincidence, we can identify the signals caused by the $^{220}$Rn-$^{216}$Po decay sequence on an event-by-event basis. The analysis of these events allows us to extract the time differences between the two decays, leading to a new evaluation of $^{216}$ half-life, estimated as (143.3 $\pm$ 2.8) ms., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Localization and modeling of radioactive contaminations is a challenge that ultra-low background experiments are constantly facing. These are fundamental steps both to extract scientific results and to further reduce the background of the detectors. Here we present an innovative technique based on the analysis of $\alpha-\alpha$ delayed coincidences in $^{232}$Th and $^{238}$U decay chains, developed to investigate the contaminations of the ZnSe crystals in the CUPID-0 experiment. This method allows to disentangle surface and bulk contaminations of the detectors relying on the different probability to tag delayed coincidences as function of the $\alpha$ decay position.

RES-NOVA is a new proposed experiment for the investigation of astrophysical neutrino sources with archaeological Pb-based cryogenic detectors. RES-NOVA will exploit Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS) as detection channel, thus it will be equally sensitive to all neutrino flavors produced by Supernovae (SNe). RES-NOVA with only a total active volume of (60 cm)$^3$ and an energy threshold of 1 keV will probe the entire Milky Way Galaxy for (failed) core-collapse SNe with $> 3 \sigma$ detection significance. The high detector modularity makes RES-NOVA ideal also for reconstructing the main parameters (e.g. average neutrino energy, star binding energy) of SNe occurring in our vicinity, without deterioration of the detector performance caused by the high neutrino interaction rate. For the first time, distances $<3$ kpc can be surveyed, similarly to the ones where all known past galactic SNe happened. We discuss the RES-NOVA potential, accounting for a realistic setup, considering the detector geometry, modularity and background level in the region of interest. We report on the RES-NOVA background model and on the sensitivity to SN neutrinos as a function of the distance travelled by neutrinos.

The nucleus is an extraordinarily complex object where fundamental forces are at work. The solution of this many-body problem has challenged physicists for decades: several models with complementary virtues and flaws have been adopted, none of which has a universal predictive capability. Double beta decay is a second-order weak nuclear decay whose precise measurement might steer fundamental improvements in nuclear theory. Its knowledge paves the way to a much better understanding of many-body nuclear dynamics and clarifies, in particular, the role of multiparticle states. This is a useful input to a complete understanding of the dynamics of neutrino-less double beta decay, the chief physical process whose discovery may shed light to the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and unveil the true nature of neutrinos. Here, we report the study of $2\nu\beta\beta$-decay in $^{82}$Se with the CUPID-0 detector, an array of ZnSe crystals maintained at a temperature close to 'absolute zero' in an ultralow background environment. Thanks to the unprecedented accuracy in the measurement of the two electrons spectrum, we prove that the decay is dominated by a single intermediate state. We obtain also the most precise value for the $^{82}$Se $2\nu\beta\beta$-decay half-life of $T^{2{\nu}}_{1/2} = [8.6^{+0.2}_{-0.1}] \times 10^{19}$ yr.

The production of ultra-pure raw material is a crucial step to ensure the required background level in rare event searches. In this work, we establish an innovative technique developed to produce high-purity (99.999%) granular zinc. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the refining procedure by measuring the internal contaminations of the purified zinc with a high-purity germanium detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The total activity of cosmogenic activated nuclides is measured at the level of a few mBq/kg, as well as limits on naturally occurring radionuclides are set to less than mBq/kg. The excellent radiopurity of the zinc sample allows us to search for electron capture with positron emission and neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{64}$Zn, setting the currently most stringent lower limits on their half-lives, $T_{1/2}^{\varepsilon\beta^+} > 2.7 \times 10^{21}\text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), and $T_{1/2}^{0\nu2\varepsilon}> 2.6 \times 10^{21}\text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), respectively.

A convincing observation of neutrino-less double beta decay (0$\nu$DBD) relies on the possibility of operating high energy-resolution detectors in background-free conditions. Scintillating cryogenic calorimeters are one of the most promising tools to fulfill the requirements for a next-generation experiment. Several steps have been taken to demonstrate the maturity of this technique, starting from the successful experience of CUPID-0. The CUPID-0 experiment demonstrated the complete rejection of the dominant alpha background measuring the lowest counting rate in the region of interest for this technique. Furthermore, the most stringent limit on the $^{82}$Se 0$\nu$DBD was established running 26 ZnSe crystals during two years of continuous detector operation. A scintillating bolometer based on a large cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal (45 mm side) and a Ge wafer (scintillation detector) has been operated in the CROSS cryogenic facility at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. The dual-readout detector is a prototype of the technology that will be used in the next-generation $0\nu2\beta$ experiment CUPID. The measurements were performed at 18 and 12 mK temperature in a pulse tube dilution refrigerator. This setup utilizes the same technology as the CUORE cryostat that will host CUPID and so represents an accurate estimation of the expected performance. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer shows a high energy resolution of 6 keV FWHM at the 2615 keV $\gamma$ line. The detection of scintillation light for each event triggered by the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer allowed for a full separation ($\sim$8$\sigma$) between $\gamma$($\beta$) and $\alpha$ events above 2 MeV. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal also shows a high internal radiopurity with $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra activities of less than 3 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively. Taking also into account the advantage of a more compact and massive detector array, which can be made of cubic-shaped crystals (compared to the cylindrical ones), this test demonstrates the great potential of cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers for high-sensitivity searches for the $^{100}$Mo $0\nu2\beta$ decay in CROSS and CUPID projects., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

The CUPID Collaboration is designing a tonne-scale, background-free detector to search for double beta decay with sufficient sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space corresponding to the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. One of the CUPID demonstrators, CUPID-Mo, has proved the potential of enriched Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals as suitable detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search. In this work, we characterised cubic crystals that, compared to the cylindrical crystals used by CUPID-Mo, are more appealing for the construction of tightly packed arrays. We measured an average energy resolution of (6.7$\pm$0.6) keV FWHM in the region of interest, approaching the CUPID target of 5 keV FWHM. We assessed the identification of $\alpha$ particles with and without a reflecting foil that enhances the scintillation light collection efficiency, proving that the baseline design of CUPID already ensures a complete suppression of this $\alpha$-induced background contribution. We also used the collected data to validate a Monte Carlo simulation modelling the light collection efficiency, which will enable further optimisations of the detector.

Precise characterization of detector time resolution is of crucial importance for next-generation cryogenic-bolometer experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay, such as CUPID, in order to reject background due to pile-up of two-neutrino double-beta decay events. In this paper, we describe a technique developed to study the pile-up rejection capability of cryogenic bolometers. Our approach, which consists of producing controlled pile-up events with a programmable waveform generator, has the benefit that we can reliably and reproducibly control the time separation and relative energy of the individual components of the generated pile-up events. The resulting data allow us to optimize and benchmark analysis strategies to discriminate between individual and pile-up pulses. We describe a test of this technique performed with a small array of detectors at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, in Italy; we obtain a 90% rejection efficiency against pulser-generated pile-up events with rise time of ~15ms down to time separation between the individual events of about 2ms.

Residual radioactive contaminants of a caesium hafnium chloride (Cs$_2$HfCl$_6$) crystal scintillator have been measured in a low background setup at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN, Italy. The total alpha activity of the detector is at the level of 7.8(3) mBq/kg. The results of direct studies of the $\alpha$ decay of naturally occurring Hf isotopes that have been performed using the "source=detector" approach are presented. In 2848 h of data taking, the $\alpha$ decay of $^{174}$Hf was observed with T$_{1/2} = (7.0\pm1.2)\times10^{16} $ y., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics, Section A

A search for resonant absorption of solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei was carried out. A newly developed approach involving low-background cryogenic bolometer based on Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ crystal was used that allowed for significant improvement of sensitivity in comparison with previous $^{169}$Tm based experiments. The measurements performed with $8.18$ g crystal during $6.6$ days exposure yielded the following limits on axion couplings: $|g_{A\gamma} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 1.44 \times 10^{-14}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $|g_{Ae} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 2.81 \times 10^{-16}$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrino-less double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg$\times$yr to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{70}$Zn and for the neutrino-less positron-emitting electron capture of $^{64}$Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$\%$ credible interval limits of ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0\nu\beta\beta}(^{70}{\rm Zn}) > 1.6 \times 10^{21}$ yr and ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0\nu EC \beta+}(^{64}{\rm Zn}) > 1.2 \times 10^{22}$ yr, surpassing by almost two orders of magnitude the previous experimental results

The growing interest in clarifying the controversial situation in the Dark Matter sector has driven the experimental efforts towards new ways to investigate the long-standing DAMA/LIBRA result. Among them, low-temperature calorimeters based on Na-containing scintillating crystals offer the possibility to clarify the nature of the measured signal via particle identification. Here we report the first measurement of Na-containing crystals, based on material different from NaI, i.e. Na$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ and Na$_2$W$_2$O$_7$, pointing out their excellent performance in term of energy resolution, light yield, and particle identification.

We present the search for Lorentz violation in the double beta decay of ^{82}Se~with CUPID-0, using an exposure of 9.95 kg x y. We found no evidence for the searched signal and set a limit on the isotropic components of the Lorentz violating coefficient of $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)} < 4.1\cdot10^{-6}$ GeV (90\% Credible Interval). This results is obtained with a Bayesian analysis of the experimental data and fully includes the systematic uncertainties of the model. This is the first limit on $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$ obtained with a scintillating bolometer, showing the potentiality of this technique.

The first direct search for the double electron capture ($2\epsilon$) and the electron capture with positron emission ($\epsilon\beta^+$) in $^{144}$Sm to the ground state and to the excited levels of $^{144}$Nd was realized by measuring - over 1899 h - a 342 g sample of highly purified samarium oxide (Sm$_2$O$_3$) with the ultra-low background HP-Ge $\gamma$ spectrometer GeCris (465 cm$^3$) at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS). No effect was observed and half-life limits were estimated at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.1-1.3) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, for the first time half-life limits of the double beta ($2\beta^-$) decay of $^{154}$Sm to several excited levels of $^{154}$Gd have been set; they are at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.06-8) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.)., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures and 4 tables

Scintillating NaI(Tl) crystals are widely used in a large variety of experimental applications. However, for the use as Dark Matter (DM) detectors, such crystals demand a high level of radio-purity, not achievable by means of standard industrial techniques. One of the main difficulties comes from the presence of potassium that always accompanies sodium in alkali halides. On the other hand, the arguable DM detection by DAMA experiment using NaI(Tl) scintillating crystals requires a reliable verification able to either confirm the existence of DM or rule out the DAMA claim. Ultra-low radioactivity NaI(Tl) crystals, particularly with very low potassium content, are therefore indispensable to overcome the current stalemate in Dark Matter searches. Nonetheless, apart from DAMA-LIBRA experiments, to date, no other experiment has succeeded in building a detector from NaI(Tl) crystals with potassium content of ppb level. This work describes recent results in the preparation of ultra-radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals using a modified Bridgman method. A double-walled platinum crucible technique has been designed and reliability tests show that 5 ppb of potassium in the NaI(Tl) crystals of 2 and 3 inches in diameter can be achieved starting from NaI powder with potassium content of the order of 10 ppb. The potassium excess is segregated in the tail-side of the as grown ingot where measured potassium concentration is above 20 ppb. The purifying effect of Bridgman growth for larger NaI(Tl) crystals is currently being tested. The work also reports on scintillation parameters of our NaI(Tl) crystals measured in a dedicated setup conceived for naked, hygroscopic crystals. We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{82}$Se performed for the first time with cryogenic calorimeters, in the framework of the CUPID-0~experiment. With an exposure of 9.95 kg$\times$yr of Zn$^{82}$Se, we determine the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with an unprecedented precision level, $T_{1/2}^{2\nu} = [8.60 \pm 0.03 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.17}_{-0.10} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$. The very high signal-to-background ratio, along with the detailed reconstruction of the background sources allowed us to identify the single state dominance as the underlying mechanism of such process, demonstrating that the higher state dominance hypothesis is disfavored at the level of 5.5 $\sigma$.

The double-electron capture and the electron capture with positron emission in $^{168}$Yb have been investigated for the first time at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy) measuring 371 g of highly purified ytterbium oxide placed on the end-cap of a 465 cm$^3$ ultra-low-background high purity Germanium detector (HPGe). No gamma associated to double beta processes in $^{168}$Yb have been observed after 2074 h of data taking. This has allowed setting the half-life limits on the level of $\lim T_{1/2}\sim$ $10^{14}-10^{18}$ yr at 90\% C.L. Particularly, a lower half-life limit on a possible resonant neutrinoless double-electron capture in $^{168}$Yb to the $(2)^-$ 1403.7 keV excited state of $^{168}$Er is set as $T_{1/2}\geq1.9\times 10^{18}$ yr at 90\% C.L. Half-life limits $T_{1/2}^{2\nu(0\nu)}\geq 4.5(4.3)\times10^{16}$ yr were set on the $2\nu(0\nu)2\beta^-$ decay of $^{176}$Yb to the $2^+$ 84.3 keV first excited level of $^{176}$Hf., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

We operated a PbMoO$_4$ scintillating cryogenic detector of 570 g, produced with archaeological lead. This compound features excellent low temperature characteristics in terms of light yield, 12 keV/MeV for $\beta/\gamma$ interactions, and FWHM energy resolution, 11.7 keV at 2.6 MeV. Furthermore, the detector allows for an effective particle identification by means of pulse shape analysis on the heat read-out channel. The implementation of innovative techniques and procedures for the purification of raw materials used for the crystal growth, and the highly-pure archaeological Pb, allowed the production of large volume high quality crystal. The overall characteristics of the detector operated at cryogenic temperatures makes PbMoO$_4$ an excellent compound for neutrino physics applications, especially neutrinoless double-beta studies.

CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project for the measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu$DBD) with scintillating bolometers. The detector, consisting of 24 enriched and 2 natural ZnSe crystals, has been taking data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso from June 2017 to December 2018, collecting a $^{82}$Se exposure of 5.29 kg$\times$yr. In this paper we present the phase-I results in the search for 0$\nu$DBD. We demonstrate that the technology implemented by CUPID-0 allows us to reach the lowest background for calorimetric experiments: $(3.5^{+1.0}_{-0.9})\times10^{-3}$ counts/(keV kg yr). Monitoring 3.88$\times$10$^{25}$ $^{82}$Se nuclei$\times$yr we reach a 90% credible interval median sensitivity of $\rm{T}^{0\nu}_{1/2}>5.0\times10^{24} \rm{yr}$ and set the most stringent limit on the half-life of $^{82}$Se 0$\nu$DBD : $\rm{T}^{0\nu}_{1/2}>3.5\times10^{24} \rm{yr}$ (90% credible interval), corresponding to m$_{\beta\beta} <$ (311-638) meV depending on the nuclear matrix element calculations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The $^{169}$Tm nuclide has first nuclear level at 8.41 keV with magnetic type transition to the ground state and, therefore, can be used as a target nucleus for the search of resonant absorption of solar axions. We plan to use a Tm-containing crystal of a garnet family Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ as a bolometric detector in order to search for the excitation of the first nuclear level of $^{169}$Tm via the resonant absorption of solar axions. With this perspective in mind, a sample of the Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ crystal was grown and tested for its bolometric and optical properties. Measurements of chemical and/or radioactive contaminations were performed as well. CUPID-0 is the first large mass array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se scintillating low temperature calorimeters, operated at LNGS since 2017. During its first scientific runs, CUPID-0 collected an exposure of 9.95 kg yr. Thanks to the excellent rejection of $\alpha$ particles, we attained the lowest background ever measured with thermal detectors in the energy region where we search for the signature of $^{82}$Se neutrinoless double beta decay. In this work we develop a model to reconstruct the CUPID-0 background over the whole energy range of experimental data. We identify the background sources exploiting their distinctive signatures and we assess their extremely low contribution (down to $\sim10^{-4}$ counts/(keV kg yr)) in the region of interest for $^{82}$Se neutrinoless double beta decay search. The CUORE experiment is the world's largest bolometric experiment. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals, for a total mass of 742 kg. CUORE is presently taking data at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. A large custom cryogen-free cryostat allows reaching and maintaining a base temperature of about 10 mK, required for the optimal operation of the detector. This apparatus has been designed in order to achieve a low noise environment, with minimal contribution to the radioactive background for the experiment. In this paper, we present an overview of the CUORE cryostat, together with a description of all its sub-systems, focusing on the solutions identified to satisfy the stringent requirements. We briefly illustrate the various phases of the cryostat commissioning and highlight the relevant steps and milestones achieved each time. Finally, we describe the successful cooldown of CUORE.
