- Abstract
Modern society is very dependent on electricity. In the energy sector, the amount of renewable energy is growing, especially wind energy. To keep the electricity network in balance we need to know how much, when, and where electricity is produced. To support this goal, the need for proper wind forecasts has grown. Compared to traditional deterministic forecasts, ensemble models can better provide the range of variability and uncertainty. However, probabilistic forecasts are often either under- or overdispersive and biased, thus not covering the true and full distribution of probabilities. Hence, statistical postprocessing is needed to increase the value of forecasts. However, traditional closer-to-surface wind observations do not support the verification of wind higher above the surface that is more relevant for wind energy production. Thus, the goal of this study was to test whether new types of observations like radar and lidar winds could be used for verification and statistical calibration of 100-m winds. According to our results, the calibration improved the forecast skill compared to a raw ensemble. The results are better for low and moderate winds, but for higher wind speeds more training data would be needed, either from a larger number of stations or using a longer training period

- Abstract
Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään teräsbetonisen siltapylonin epälineaarista rakenneanalyysia. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on muodostaa yksinkertainen laskentamalli, jolla voidaan huomioida geometrinen epälineaarisuus, teräksen ja betonin materiaalinen epälineaarisuus ja betonin halkeilu. Työssä esitellään kirjallisuuslähteisiin perustuen tyypillisimmät vinoköysisiltojen pylonirakenteet ja tarkastellaan niiden rakenteellista toimintaa. Kirjallisuuslähteiden avulla käydään läpi elementtimenetelmän, rakenteen stabiiliuden ja puristetun ja taivutetun teräsbetonirakenteen teoriaa. Työn varsinaisessa tutkimusosuudessa on suoritettu vertailulaskelmia eri pylonityypeille lineaarisella, geometrisesti epälineaarisella ja geometrisesti sekä materiaalisesti epälineaarisella analyysilla. Vertailulaskelmissa käytetyt pylonityypit ovat A-, H-, I- ja lambdapyloneita. Kahdella kaltevalla köysitasolla tuettu pyloni on selvästi jäykempi verrat, This thesis deals with the non-linear structural analysis of reinforced concrete bridge pylon. The aim of this study is to provide a simple computational model which can take into account the geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity due to behavior of steel and concrete and the cracking of concrete. In this work the most typical cable-stayed bridge pylon structures and their structural behavior is presented based on the literature sources. Also basic theory of the finite element method, the stability of the structures and the behavior of concrete beam-column is reviewed. The research section of the thesis was carried out by analyzing different pylon geometries with linear, geometrically nonlinear and geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element calculations. Analyzed pylon geometries were A-, H-, I- and lambdapylons. Furthermore the impact of the rebar ratio and the slenderness of the pylon were studied for I-pylon. Also the behavior of I-pylon with one vertical cable plane was compared with behavior of I-pylon with two inclined cable planes. Finally the effect of the imperfections to the stability of the I-pylon was studied. The simple computational model established in this thesis was verified with comparison to the actual concrete column tests which were found in literature sources. From obtained results it can be inferred that the simple computational model is accurate enough for the basis of structural calculations. From the analysis of the different pylon geometries, with different levels of nonlinearity, it was found that when the structural analysis takes into account the non-linear behavior of the concrete pylon, it reduced the longitudinal support moments and displacements of the top of the pylon and increased the same parameters in the transverse direction. The increasing slenderness of I-pylon diminished differences between longitudinal support moment results calculated with different levels of nonlinearity and increased differences in the

Tietojohtamisen koulutusohjelma - Abstract

- Abstract
Large shore-parallel, quasi-stationary snow bands are occasionally observed over the Gulf of Finland during wintertime when the sea is not frozen. On the basis of Weather Research and Forecasting mesoscale model experiments and radar observations of snow bands formed in January 2006 and February 2012, we show that their dynamics share common characteristics: (1) the sea gulf that produces the known lake effect, (2) cold easterly large-scale flow along the gulf and (3) a cold local flow from the two near and opposite coastlines of Estonia and Finland in the form of two land-breeze cells which collide offshore. The associated fronts, which have strong rising motions, are maintained by the convergence of the land-breeze cells. In addition to these factors, the concave shape of the coast in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland promotes offshore convergence and the formation of several secondary bands of precipitation that are adjacent to the eastern part of the main band. When the easterlies turn to southerlies, horizontal convective rolls appear over the sea. The Estonian land breeze is enhanced while the cold air remains stagnant inland over the Finnish coast, acting as an orographic barrier lifting the marine air mass upwards. Consequently, a line of convective precipitation composed of several cells is formed along the Finnish coast. In both events, the simulations also show two low-level jets generated by the combined effects of the land-breeze cells and baroclinicity over the coast of Finland and Estonia., Postprint (published version)

TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *CAPITAL investments , *BUSINESS development - Abstract
Interest in Arctic issues has been growing in recent years. From an economic perspective, the Barents Region is of signifi cant interest due to substantial investment projects. The European Union has strengthened its presence and infl uence in the region, playing a role in combatting climate change and optimizing opportunities for northern economic activity. Simultaneously, there have been intentions to narrow the gap between public policy and the private sector to more effi ciently exploit business opportunities in the North. Promoting the Arctic’s potential for business development and building stronger co-operation between the region’s actors are among the recent activities in Arctic development. Innovation hubs generate new businesses from ideas and innovations. They operate in global networks by creating added value and attracting more investment capital and talent. This article explores innovation hubs in three regions in Northern Europe--Oulu (Finland), Luleå (Sweden), and Tromsø (Norway). The article examines, through an innovation hub framework, what kind of business development activities are generating growth in these innovation hubs, and what the diff erences are between these regions. This article discusses whether it is benefi cial to have similar innovation service structures in every region, or if connected Arctic innovation hubs that strengthen Arctic co-operation is a better approach. More intensive co-operation between Arctic actors is most likely to require specifi c actions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ICING (Meteorology) ,WIND turbines & the environment ,WIND power plants ,NUMERICAL weather forecasting - Abstract
Ice on wind turbine blades reduces efficiency and causes financial loss to energy companies. Thus, it is important to know the possible risk of icing already in the planning phase of a wind park. This paper presents a new Finnish Icing Atlas and the methodology behind it and is prepared by applying the mesoscale numerical weather prediction model AROME with 2.5km horizontal resolution and an ice growth model based on ISO 12494. The same meteorological dataset is used as was used in the Finnish Wind Atlas (published in 2009), and thus is fully compatible with and comparable with existing climatological wind resource estimations. Representation of the selected time period is evaluated from an icing point of view. Comparing reanalysed temperature and humidity datasets for both the past 20 years and the wind atlas period, we conclude that the used time period represents large-scale atmospheric conditions favourable for icing. We perform a series of sensitivity tests to evaluate how sensitive this ice model is to input from the weather model. The new atlas presents climatological distributions of active and passive icing periods and wind power production loss in map form for three different heights (50, 100 and 200m) over all of Finland. The results show that the risk for active icing is much greater in coastal areas, while the risk of passive icing is larger inland. © 2016 The Authors. Wind Energy Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The renewable energy sources play a big role in mitigating the effects of power production on climate change. However, many renewable energy sources are weather dependent, and accurate weather forecasts are needed to support energy production estimates. This dissertation work aims to develop meteorological solutions to support wind energy production, and to answer the following questions: How accurate are the wind forecasts at the wind turbine hub height? What is the annual distribution of the wind speed? How much energy can be harvested from the wind? How does the atmospheric icing affect wind energy production and how do we forecast these events? The first part of this dissertation work concentrates on resource mapping. Wind and Icing Atlases bring valuable information when planning wind parks and where to locate new ones. The Atlases provide climatological information on mean wind speed, potential to generate wind power and atmospheric icing conditions in Finland. Based on mean wind speed and direction, altogether 72 representative months were simulated to represent the wind climatology of the past 30 years. A similar detailed selection could not be made with respect to icing process due to lack of icing observations. However, sensitivity tests were performed with respect to temperature and relative humidity, which have an influence on icing formation. According to these sensitivity tests the selected period was found to represent the icing climatology as well. The results are presented in gridded form with 2.5 km horizontal resolution and for 50 m, 100 m and 200 m heights above the ground, representing typical hub heights of a wind turbine. Daily probabilistic wind forecasts can bring additional value to decision making to support wind energy production. Probabilistic weather forecasts not only provide wind forecasts but also give estimations related to forecast uncertainty. However, probabilistic wind forecasts are often underdispersive. In this thesis the statistical calibration methods combined with a new type of wind observations were utilized. The aim was to study if Lidar and Radar wind observations at 100 m’s height can be used for ensemble calibration. The results strongly indicate that the calibration enhances the forecast skill by enlarging the ensemble spread and by decreasing RMSE. The most significant improvements are identified with shorter lead times and with weak or moderate wind speeds. For the strongest winds no improvements are seen, as a result of small amount of strong wind speed cases during the calibration training period. In addition to wind speed, wind power generation is mostly affected by atmospheric icing at Northern latitudes. However, measuring of icing is difficult due to many reasons and, furthermore, not many observations are available. Therefore, in this thesis the suitability of a new type of ceilometer-based icing profiles for atmospheric icing model validation have been tested. The results support the usage of this new type of ceilometer icing profiles for model verification. Furthermore, this new extensive observation network provides opportunities for deeper investigation of icing cloud properties and structure. Millainen on tuulen nopeuden vuotuinen jakauma? Paljonko tuulesta voidaan saada tehoa? Miten talviset jäätävät olosuhteet vaikuttavat tuulivoiman tuotantoon? Jäätämisen mittaaminen on kuitenkin hyvin haastavaa. Tämän väitöskirjatyön viimeisessä osiossa tarkasteltiin kuinka ceilometrillä mitatuista ilmakehän pystyprofiileista johdettuja jäätämishavaintoja voitaisiin hyödyntää jäätämisennusteen verifioinnissa. Uusi havaintomenetelmä osoittautui hyvin lupaavaksi etenkin havaintoverkon kattavuuden osalta (24 asemaa).
