Simple Summary: The apple buprestid beetle Agrilus mali is a pest that can cause serious harm to various domestic apples and many species of Malus. Currently, it is distributed in 17 provinces of China. After spreading from Shandong province to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, it has caused great damage to the local wild apple resources. China is a major producer of apples; once this pest spreads, it will seriously affect China's apple industry. We used the MaxEnt model to analyze the changes in the distribution area of A. mali under future climate change scenarios in China. The forecasted suitable regions for A. mali in China will expand northward in the 2050s and 2070s. The forecasted highly suitable regions were 1.11–1.34 times larger than they are currently, and their central distributions were 61.57–167.59 km further north. These findings suggest that monitoring and management measures should be implemented urgently to protect the commercial apple industry and wild apple resources alike. The apple jewel beetle (AJB), Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a dangerous pest of commercial apple orchards across China, the largest apple production country in the world, and has recently become invasive in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of northwestern China, where wild apple forests also occur. This pest poses a serious threat to apple production and wild apple forests throughout the world. Global warming is expected to change the geographical distribution of A. mali in China, but the extent of this is unknown. Based on empirical data from 1951 to 2000, a MaxEnt model was used to forecast the ecological distribution of A. mali under three different climate scenarios projected in the fifth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The results showed that the most important variables were the maximum temperature of November, precipitation in January, and minimum temperatures in April. Under all climate scenarios, the forecasted suitable regions for A. mali in China will expand northward in the 2050s and 2070s. The forecasted highly suitable regions will be 1.11–1.34 times larger than they are currently, and their central distributions will be 61.57–167.59 km further north. These findings suggest that the range and damage caused by A. mali in China will increase dramatically in the future. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential associations between clinical/socio-demographic variables and the presence of purging/binge-eating episodes in eating disorders (EDs). Clinical/socio-demographic variables and psychometric scores were collected. Groups of patients were identified according to the presence or absence of purging or objective binge-eating episodes (OBEs) and compared through t-test and chi-square tests. Binary logistic regression analyses were run. A sample of 51 ED outpatients was recruited. Patients with purging behaviors had a longer duration of untreated illness (DUI) (t = 1.672; p = 0.019) and smoked a higher number of cigarettes/day (t = 1.061; p = 0.030) compared to their counterparts. A lower BMI was associated with purging (OR = 0.881; p = 0.035), and an older age at onset showed a trend towards statistical significance (OR = 1.153; p = 0.061). Patients with OBEs, compared to their counterparts, were older (t = 0.095; p < 0.001), more frequently presented a diagnosis of bulimia or binge-eating disorder (χ2 = 26.693; p < 0.001), a longer duration of illness (t = 2.162; p = 0.019), a higher number of hospitalizations (t = 1.301; p = 0.012), and more often received a prescription for pharmacological treatment (χ2 = 7.864; OR = 6.000; p = 0.005). A longer duration of the last pharmacological treatment was associated with OBE (OR = 1.569; p = 0.046). In contrast to purging, OBE was associated with a more complicated and severe presentation of ED. A lower BMI and a later age at onset, as well as long-lasting previous pharmacological treatments, may predict the presence of purging/binging. Simple Summary: In our study, we explored ways to effectively trap invasive ambrosia beetles, which pose significant threats to trees and forests. We focused on comparing two types of bait—pure ethanol and denatured ethanol—to attract these pests in different environments like tree nurseries and orchards. We found that traps using pure ethanol captured more Xylosandrus germanus beetles compared to those with denatured ethanol. Our findings suggest that using pure ethanol could be more effective for monitoring certain ambrosia beetle species. This research contributes to better pest management strategies, helping protect trees from invasive pests, ultimately benefiting society by safeguarding ecosystems and agricultural productivity. Ambrosia beetles, particularly invasive species within the tribe Xyleborini, such as Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford, 1894), pose significant threats to various ecosystems and managed habitats worldwide. Monitoring these invaders is vital for effective pest management, typically accomplished through ethanol-baited traps. We compared trap efficacy using denatured ethanol versus absolute ethanol in orchards, tree nurseries, and lumber yards in northeastern Ohio, USA, finding that absolute ethanol traps captured significantly more X. germanus. Analysis revealed acetone, ethanol, and methyl isobutyl ketone in the denatured ethanol, likely impacting trap efficacy. Our study underscores the importance of using pure denatured ethanol without acetone for effective monitoring, especially for X. germanus. A robust, well-functioning immune system is the cornerstone of good health. Various factors may influence the immune system's effectiveness, potentially leading to immune system failure. This review aims to provide an overview of the structure and action of immunomodulators isolated from African medicinal plants. The research was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Full-text access research articles published in English up to December 2023, including plant characteristics, isolated phytochemicals, and immuno-modulatory activities, were screened. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were generated using ChemDraw® (version 12.0.1076), and convergent and distinctive signaling pathways were highlighted. These phytochemicals with demonstrated immunostimulatory activity include alkaloids (berberine, piperine, magnoflorine), polysaccharides (pectin, glucan, acemannan, CALB-4, GMP90-1), glycosides (syringin, cordifolioside, tinocordiside, aucubin), phenolic compounds (ferulic acid, vanillic acid, eupalitin), flavonoids (curcumin, centaurein, kaempferin, luteolin, guajaverin, etc.), terpenoids (oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, betulinic acid, boswellic acids, corosolic acid, nimbidin, andrographolides). These discussed compounds exert their effects through various mechanisms, targeting the modulation of MAPKs, PI3K-Akt, and NF-kB. These mechanisms can support the traditional use of medicinal plants to treat immune-related diseases. The outcomes of this overview are to provoke structural action optimization, to orient research on particular natural chemicals for managing inflammatory, infectious diseases and cancers, or to boost vaccine immunogenicity. The 19 species of Dendroctonus bark beetles native to North America include several of the most significant biotic mortality agents of conifers in this region, and they have impacted millions of hectares of forest in recent decades. Semiochemical attractants play several vital roles in the biology of these insects including host finding, host assessment, and mate finding. They are key to the virulence of these insects, since they mediate the mass attacks that enable killing and reproduction within healthy trees. These attractants consist of combinations of thirteen identified pheromone components in three primary chemical classes and at least ten host-associated compounds dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons in host defensive resin. Due to their potential for use in pest management technologies, semiochemical attractants for Dendroctonus have received extensive research into their chemical compositions and effects on insect behavior. This paper is intended as a synthesis of this research over the past 60 years as well as a critical examination of approaches to investigation of this topic and interpretation of experimental results. Its purpose is to assist practitioners in formulating suitable attractive lures for use in applications and identify gaps in knowledge of the semiochemistry of Dendroctonus that should be addressed if the practical potential of attractants is to be fully realized. Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease. Although there are some FAD-approved medicines for controlling smoking, the relapse rate remains very high. Among the factors that could induce nicotine relapse, stress might be the most important one. In the last decades, preclinical studies have generated many new findings that lead to a better understanding of stress-induced relapse of nicotine-seeking. Several molecules such as α3β4 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, α2-adrenergic receptors, cannabinoid receptor 1, trace amine-associated receptor 1, and neuropeptide systems (corticotropin-releasing factor and its receptors, dynorphine and kappa opioid receptor) have been linked to stress-induced nicotine relapse. In this review, we discuss recent advances in the neurobiology, treatment targets, and potential therapeutics of stress-induced nicotine relapse. We also discuss some factors that may influence stress-induced nicotine relapse and that should be considered in future studies. In the final section, a perspective on some research directions is provided. Further investigation on the neurobiology of stress-induced nicotine relapse will shed light on the development of new medicines for controlling smoking and will help us understand the interactions between the stress and reward systems in the brain. Alcohol relapse in those who received liver transplantation (LT) for alcohol‐related liver disease can lead to poor graft function, low medication adherence rates and decreased chances of survival. Numerous studies have evaluated on this topic; however, discrepancies in the meaning and measurement of 'alcohol relapse' lead to heterogeneous results. This scoping review aimed to explore the conceptual and operational definitions of alcohol relapse in LT recipients with alcohol‐related aetiologies and to examine newly reported risk factors of alcohol relapse. Following the Arksey and O'Malley scoping review method and PRISMA guidelines, structured searches for articles published from 2012 to 2022 were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane and PsycINFO. Twenty‐eight studies were included in the final review. Alcohol relapse was either defined as 'any alcohol consumption' or 'a certain degree of alcohol drinking' after transplantation. Discrepancies in the incidence rates persisted even within studies that shared the same conceptual definition. Commonly reported risk factors for alcohol relapse were younger age, social isolation and shorter abstinence periods before LT. Self‐efficacy and post‐transplant complications were newly identified risk factors in recent studies; whereas environmental factors such as external stressors were rarely included. The variance in the definition of alcohol relapse and inconsistent identification methods make it difficult to organize a structured interventional study. A standardized stratification of post‐LT alcohol relapse behaviour is needed to prior to implementing interventions that employ a harm minimization approach. Both the eight-spined spruce bark beetle (eight-spined beetle, Ips typographus) and the six-spined spruce bark beetle (six-spined beetle, Pityogenes chalcographus) have major deleterious effects on Norway spruce (i.e., Picea abies, the host tree) in Europe. However, future potential range shifts of the two pests and their range overlap with Norway spruce have not yet been characterized. Through range dynamic models, we characterized their future range expansions, as well as their range overlap with their host tree under current–future change scenarios in 2100. Host availability was the greatest contributor to the range shifts of the two pests, and climatic changes were the main drivers of the range expansion of the host. The potential range, expanded range, and overlapped range were larger for the six-spined beetle than for the eight-spined beetle. The host tree, i.e., Norway spruce, might face increasing threats from the two pests in the future. Future climate change will likely indirectly facilitate range shifts of pests by promoting increases in the area capable of sustaining the host tree. The six-spined beetle might pose a greater threat to Norway spruce than the eight-spined beetle, albeit the latter has previously been considered to have more deleterious effects on Norway spruce. The globose scale (GS) (Sphaerolecanium prunastri Boyer de Fonscolombe) is a sucking insect that feeds on saps of wild apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca L.) in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. It feeds on branches of wild apricot leading to poor growth, leaf yellowing and leaf drop, and sometimes mortality. Since the initial infestation in 2018, all the main valleys of wild apricot trees have been affected, but there is little research on the host's physiological response to GS infestation. We measured the differences in growth between infested and non-infested wild apricots. The results showed that the diameter of shoot branches, the fresh weight, dry weight, length, width, area, and chlorophyll content of leaves, and the longitudinal diameter of fruit, were all significantly less for infested wild apricot trees than for un-infested wild apricot. The branch length of shoots, cross diameter, and weight of fruit also decreased, although the differences were not significant. The pandemic caused by COVID-19 led to serious disruptions in the preventive efforts against other infectious diseases. In this work, a robust mathematical co-dynamical model of COVID-19, dengue, and HIV is designed. Rigorous analyses for investigating the dynamical properties of the designed model are implemented. Under a special case, the stability of the model's equilibria is demonstrated using well-known candidates for the Lyapunov function. To reduce the co-circulation of the three diseases, optimal interventions were defined for the model and the control system was analyzed. Simulations of the model showed different control scenarios, which could have a positive or detrimental impact on reducing the co-circulation of the diseases. Highlights of the simulations included: (i) Upon implementation of the first intervention strategy (control against COVID-19 and dengue), it was observed that a significant number of single and dual infection cases were averted. (ii) Under the COVID-19 and HIV prevention strategy, a remarkable number of new single and dual infection cases were also prevented. (iii) Under the COVID-19 and co-infection prevention strategy, a significant number of new infections were averted. (iv) Comparing all the intervention measures considered in this study, it is possible to state that the strategy that combined COVID-19/HIV averted the highest number of new infections. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a disabling disorder characterized by extreme weight loss and frequent chronicization, especially in its most severe forms. This condition is associated with a pro-inflammatory state; however, the role of immunity in symptom severity remains unclear. Total cholesterol, white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, iron, folate, vitamin D and B12 were dosed in 84 female AN outpatients. Mildly severe (Body Mass Index—BMI ≥ 17) versus severe (BMI < 17) patients were compared using one-way ANOVAs or χ2 tests. A binary logistic regression model was run to investigate the potential association between demographic/clinical variables or biochemical markers and the severity of AN. Patients with severe anorexia (compared to mild forms) were older (F = 5.33; p = 0.02), engaged in more frequent substance misuse (χ2 = 3.75; OR = 3.86; p = 0.05) and had a lower NLR (F = 4.12; p = 0.05). Only a lower NLR was predictive of severe manifestations of AN (OR = 0.007; p = 0.031). Overall, our study suggests that immune alterations may be predictive of AN severity. In more severe forms of AN, the response of the adaptive immunity is preserved, while the activation of the innate immunity may be reduced. Toxicological investigations of pesticides largely focus on the declared active ingredient, which constitutes only between a few percent to around 50% of the total formulation. The complete formulations are unknown. For each declared active ingredient, there are dozens or hundreds of formulations. We demonstrate that petroleum has always been and is still always in pesticides. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were applied for 24 pesticides. The measured compounds were the 16-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The ratio of the PAHs to the threshold of toxicity was from 2.16 to 8288 times. The levels and distribution of PAHs per pesticide were different. Petroleum residues appear to be a waste product. The declared active component is taken alone for toxicity calculations, such as the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The PAHs with 2–3 cycles are more represented in pesticides than those with 4–6 cycles, which underlines that the petroleum residues appear to come mainly from crude unburned material. The ADI should be divided by 1000 if it is considered that petroleum residues amplify the toxicity by 1000. The admixture of PAHs in pesticides can be highly carcinogenic or toxic in the long term, even more than the declared active ingredient itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a condition prevalent in many countries around the world, and the public burden of its treatment is close to $130 billion. mHealth offers several possible interventions to assist in the treatment of AUD. Objectives: To analyze the effectiveness of mHealth and wearable sensors to manage AUD from evidence published over the last 10 years. Methods: Following the Kruse Protocol and PRISMA 2020, four databases were queried (PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Science Direct) to identify studies with strong methodologies (n = 25). Results: Five interventions were identified, and 20/25 were effective at reducing alcohol consumption. Other interventions reported a decrease in depression and an increase in medication compliance. Primary barriers to the adoption of mHealth interventions are a requirement to train users, some are equally as effective as the traditional means of treatment, cost, and computer literacy. Conclusion: While not all mHealth interventions demonstrated statistically significant reduction in alcohol consumption, most are still clinically effective to treat AUD and provide a patient with their preference of a technologically inclined treatment Most interventions require training of users and some technology literacy, the barriers identified were very few compared with the litany of positive results. Exotic insect species are an increasing concern with international trade. Detecting and removing any insect are thus important for any imported/exported product, including wood products. For example, wood transportation is known to be an important pathway for the introduction and dispersal of the Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae). This Asian species is causing high mortality of ash trees in its introduced range because of the weak natural defense of trees and the virtual absence of natural enemies. For similar reasons, there are concerns in Europe that the Bronze Birch Borer, A. anxius, native to North America, could be introduced and cause important birch mortality. Having efficient detection methods and phytosanitary measures to prevent introducing it is thus important. In this study, we evaluated tomodensitometry—or CT-scan—as a detection method for detecting these two Agrilus spp. using debarking as the method of reference. Using CT-scan, we were also able to precisely measure the depth of insects in ash and birch trees in order to recommend proper phytosanitary measures for exportation and importation of wood products. Both techniques efficiently detect the presence of insects in ash, paper birch, and yellow birch. However, the number of A. anxius detected depended on both the technique and the diameter of the sample. The depth of insects depended on tree species, sample diameter, and life-stage. Globally, A. planipennis are deeper in ash trees than A. anxius in birch trees, and prepupae are deeper than larvae. The maximal depth in the sapwood (excluding bark thickness) for ash, paper birch, and yellow birch was 21.9 mm, 6.30 mm, and 3.22 mm, respectively. Objectives: Maternal MTHFR and MTRR polymorphisms as a risk of CHD in DS fetus were studied along with maternal folic acid supplementation, which could influence the folate metabolism along with other risk factors. Material and Methods: A case-control study comprising of mothers of DS with and without CHD along with controls were recruited from a tertiary care center since 2018–2019. Genomic DNA was isolated followed by PCR-RFLP. Results: Mothers with age ≥35 years and having history of miscarriages have a higher risk of giving birth to DS with CHD (n = 35% and 42%, respectively). Mothers who carried the MTHFR 677CT/TT and MTRR 524CT/TT genotypes combination in the folic acid nonusers group during pregnancies had six-fold (OR = 6.909, p-value = 0.027; 95% CI—1.23 ± 38.51) and four-fold (OR = 4.75, p-value = 0.040; 95% CI—1.067 ± 21.44) increased odds of having a DS child with CHD, respectively, as compared to folic acid users. Conclusion: Maternal age, folic acid supplementation, and previous history of miscarriages is involved in the etiology of CHD in DS fetus in Indian population. Maternal MTHFR and MTRR polymorphisms are also involved in the occurrence of CHD and DS in Indian population when controlling for periconceptional folic acid supplementation. Simple Summary: To determine the succession of ambrosia beetles after tree felling, two Betulaceae tree species, an alder (Alnus hirsuta), and a white birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) were felled as bait logs in central Hokkaido, Japan, in 2016. From 2016 to 2018, the bait logs were dissected late in each flying season to collect ambrosia beetles. During the period of monitoring, most beetles were collected during the first 2 years. The ambrosia beetle faunas colonizing the two plant species were found to be similar, and it was established that each beetle species appeared in the same sequence in each of the two plant species, albeit with differing temporal patterns. These observations thus indicate a similar sequence of beetle succession in the two tree species, and that the relative niches of beetle species in the successional sequence after tree felling can be determined using this methodology. Ambrosia beetles bore into the xylem of woody plants, reduce timber quality, and can sometimes cause devastating damage to forest ecosystems. The colonization by different beetle species is dependent on host status, from healthy trees to the early stages of wood decay, although the precise factors influencing their host selection are not well known. Classic studies on plant ecology have determined the niches of different plant species in vegetation succession, based on comparisons of successions in different locations using ordination analyses, although the factors influencing the colonization of each species are largely undetermined. In this study, to characterize the succession of ambrosia beetles after tree felling, two Betulaceae tree species, an alder (Alnus hirsuta), and a white birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) were felled as bait logs in central Hokkaido, Japan, in 2016. From 2016 to 2018, the bait logs were dissected late in each flying season, and ambrosia beetles were collected from the logs. During the period of monitoring, the beetle colonization in both tree species was mostly concentrated in the first 2 years. We observed similarities in the beetle faunas colonizing the two plant species, and that individual species appeared in the same sequence in the logs of the two plant species, although the temporal patterns of colonization differed. Consequently, significant differences in beetle community compositions in the two host species were detected in each of the first 2 years of the study, whereas the difference in the overall composition of beetle assemblages (=pooled over 3 years) between the two plant species was smaller than that in either 2016 or 2017. We speculated that the differences in the temporal pattern of colonization could be attributable to differences in the rates at which the wood of the two tree species deteriorated. Treptoplatypus severini and Xylosandrus crassiusculus were considered to be early-successional species that commenced log colonization soon after felling, although T. severini has a wide niche and was collected during all 3 years of the study. Topology Optimisation is a broad concept deemed to encapsulate different processes for computationally determining structural materials optimal layouts. Among such techniques, Discrete Optimisation has a consistent record in Civil and Structural Engineering. In contrast, the Optimisation of Continua recently emerged as a critical asset for fostering the employment of Additive Manufacturing, as one can observe in several other industrial fields. With the purpose of filling the need for a systematic review both on the Topology Optimisation recent applications in structural steel design and on its emerging advances that can be brought from other industrial fields, this article critically analyses scientific publications from the year 2015 to 2020. Over six hundred documents, including Research, Review and Conference articles, added to Research Projects and Patents, attained from different sources were found significant after eligibility verifications and therefore, herein depicted. The discussion focused on Topology Optimisation recent approaches, methods, and fields of application and deepened the analysis of structural steel design and design for Additive Manufacturing. Significant findings can be found in summarising the state-of-the-art in profuse tables, identifying the recent developments and research trends, as well as discussing the path for disseminating Topology Optimisation in steel construction. Exotic ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in the tribe Xyleborini include destructive pests of trees growing in horticultural cropping systems. Three species are especially problematic: Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), and Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford). Due to similarities in their host tree interactions, this mini-review focuses on these three species with the goal of describing their host-selection behaviour, characterising associated semiochemicals, and assessing how these interactions relate to their management. All three of these Xylosandrus spp. attack a broad range of trees and shrubs. Physiologically stressed trees are preferentially attacked by X. crassiusculus and X. germanus, but the influence of stress on host selection by X. compactus is less clear. Ethanol is emitted from weakened trees in response to a variety of stressors, and it represents an important attractant for all three species. Other host-derived compounds tested are inconsistent or inactive. Verbenone inhibits attraction to ethanol, but the effect is inconsistent and does not prevent attacks. Integrating repellents and attractants into a push–pull management strategy has been ineffective for reducing attacks but could be optimised further. Overall, maintaining host vigour and minimising stress-induced ethanol are keys for managing these insects, particularly X. crassiusculus and X. germanus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore who small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owner–managers consider as key stakeholders for their business for helping increase productivity and the nature of the stakeholders' impact. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses the Lego Serious Play methodology and narrative analysis in a focus group setting. Findings: The analysis revealed a narrow depth of field of productivity stakeholders and identified critical narratives, involving close stakeholders which could constrain productivity. Lack of information on current and/or future productivity states, and a social brake due to the potential impact on employees are two at the forefront of owner–manager perspectives. The study also identified the importance of internal and external champions to improve productivity and re-enforced the significance of skills gaps, the role of Further Education providers and other infrastructure assets. Research limitations/implications: The purposiveness sample of the single focus group setting results in a lack of generalizability, but provides potential for replication and transposability based on the generic type of stakeholders discussed. The work highlights the potential to further enhance the constituent attributes of stakeholder salience. Practical implications: There is a potential for different network agents to increase their collaboration to create a more coherent narrative for individual productivity investment opportunities and for policy makers to consider how to leverage this. Social implications: The findings suggest that the implications of deskilling and job loss are major factors to be considered in the policy discourse. SMEs are less likely to pursue productivity improvements in a low growth setting because of their local social implications. Originality/value: The study is innovative in using Lego to elucidate narratives in relation to both stakeholder identification and their contributions to productivity improvement impact in a UK SME context. Concern about the potential for the bronze birch borer, Agrilus anxius , (BBB) to invade Europe and decimate European Birch trees motivated exploration of tools developed for the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis (EAB) for the detection and monitoring of BBB. Both purple prism traps and green multi-funnel traps were hung in girdled and non-girdled birch trees and ash trees. Beetles were overwhelmingly caught in traps hung in their own host trees. Girdling increased the number BBB, but not EAB, caught in traps. Neither EAB nor BBB showed a preference between trap types. Traps hung in second-year girdled birch trees captured as many BBB per trap as first-year girdled birch trees, and were more effective as detectors than first-year girdled trees. Other native buprestids were caught in traps. Chrysobothris species strongly preferred purple prism traps and Anthaxia species preferred green multi-funnel traps. Non-target Agrilus varied in preference. Native ash borer A. subcinctus , strongly preferred green multi-funnel traps hung in ash trees. Agrilus bilineatus , the two-lined chestnut borer, preferred purple prism traps. Traps hung in girdled birch trees show strong promise as a monitoring and detection tool for BBB. All more than 3000 species of Agrilus beetles are phytophagous and some cause economically significant damage to trees and shrubs. Facilitated by international trade, Agrilus species regularly invade new countries and continents. This necessitates a rapid identification of Agrilus species, as the first step for subsequent protective measures. This study provides the first DNA reference library for ~100 Agrilus species from the Northern Hemisphere based on three mitochondrial markers: cox1–5′ (DNA barcode fragment), cox1–3′ , and rrnL. All 329 Agrilus records available in the Barcode of Life Database format, including specimen images and geo data, are released through a public dataset 'Agrilus1 329' available at: dx.doi.org/10.5883/DS-AGRILUS1. All Agrilus species were identified using adult morphology and by using molecular phylogenetic trees, as well as distance- and tree-based algorithms. Most DNA-based species limits agree well with the morphology-based identification. Our results include cases of high intraspecific variability and multiple species para- and polyphyly. DNA barcoding is a powerful species identification tool in Agrilus , although it frequently fails to recover morphologically-delimited Agrilus species-group. Even though the current three-gene database covers only ~3% of the known Agrilus diversity, it contains representatives of all principal lineages from the Northern Hemisphere and represents the most extensive dataset built for DNA-delimited species identification within this genus so far. Abstract: Red turpentine beetle Dendroctonus valens LeConte is a non‐aggressive bark beetle in North America that attacks weakened or recently dead pines, as well as their fresh logs or stumps. Fire‐injured ponderosa pines releasing stress‐induced ethanol are often attacked. The oleoresin from these trees frequently contains 3‐carene as a major component mixed with α‐ or β‐pinene. 3‐Carene lures usually attract more D. valens than α‐ or β‐pinene lures or 1 : 1 : 1 mixtures, whereas the attraction of ethanol + 3‐carene lures has never been tested. Funnel traps with ethanol, 3‐carene or ethanol + 3‐carene lures, and a no lure blank, were set‐up as a randomized complete block design in a pine forest near La Pine, Oregon, U.S.A., from 23 April until 11 June 2015. Dendroctonus valens, Hylastes nigrinus, Hylurgops reticulatus, Hylurgops porosus and Hylastes gracilis exhibited similar responses, with highest numbers captured in traps with ethanol + 3‐carene. The response by the first three species was confirmed as synergistic. Ips spp., Pityogenes spp., Gnathotrichus spp., Pachysquamus subcostulatus and Hylastes macer composed a second group whose numbers captured with ethanol lures were similar or greater than the 3‐carene or ethanol + 3‐carene lures. The major role of endothelial cells is to maintain homeostasis of vascular permeability and to preserve the integrity of vascular vessels to prevent fluid leakage. Properly functioning endothelial cells promote physiological balance and stability for blood circulation and fluid components. A monolayer of endothelial cells has the ability to regulate paracellular and transcellular pathways for transport proteins, solutes, and fluid. In addition to the paracellular pathway, the transcellular pathway is another route of endothelial permeability that mediates vascular permeability under physiologic conditions. The transcellular pathway was found to be associated with an assortment of disease pathogeneses. The clinical manifestation of severe dengue infection in humans is vascular leakage and hemorrhagic diatheses. This review explores and describes the transcellular pathway, which is an alternate route of vascular permeability during dengue infection that corresponds with the pathologic finding of intact tight junction. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the results of exploratory research designed to develop an awareness of healthcare behaviors, with a view toward improving the customer satisfaction with healthcare services. It examines the relationship between healthcare providers and their consumers/patients/clients.Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a critical incident methodology, with both effective and ineffective behavioral specimens examined across different provider groups.Findings: The effects of these different behaviors on what Berry (1999) identified as the common core values of service organizations are examined, as those values are required to build a lasting service relationship. Also examined are categories of healthcare practice based on the National Quality Strategy priorities.Research Limitations/implications: The most obvious is the retrospective nature of the method used. How accurate are patient or consumer memories? Are they capable of making valid judgments of healthcare experiences (Berry and Bendapudi, 2003)? While an obvious limitation, such recollections are clearly important as they may be paramount in following the healthcare practitioners' instructions, loyalty for repeat business, making recommendations to others and the like. Further, studies have shown retrospective reports to be accurate and useful (Miller et al., 1997).Practical Implications: With this information, healthcare educators should be in a better position to improve the training offered in their programs and practitioners to better serve their customers.Social Implications: The findings would indicate that the human values of excellence, innovation, joy, respect and integrity play a significant role in building a strong service relationship between consumer and healthcare provider.Originality/value: Berry (1999) has argued that the overriding importance in building a lasting service business is human values. This exploratory study has shown how critical incident analysis can be used to determine both effective and ineffective practices of different medical providers. Temperature and photoperiod play major roles in insect ecology. Many insect species have fixed degree-days for embryogenesis, with minimum and maximum temperature thresholds for egg and larval development and hatching. Often, photoperiodic changes trigger the transfer into the next life-cycle stadium. However, it is not known whether this distinct pattern also exist in a species with a high level of phenotypic plasticity in life-history traits. In the present study, eggs of the dragonfly Sympetrum striolatum Charpentier (Odonata: Libellulidae) are reared under different constant and fluctuating temperatures and photoperiodic conditions in several laboratory and field experiments. In general, and as expected, higher temperatures cause faster egg development. However, no general temperature or light-days for eyespot development and hatching are found. The minimum temperature thresholds are distinguished for survival (2 °C), embryogenesis (6 °C) and larval hatching (above 6 °C). Low winter temperatures synchronize hatching. Above 36 °C, no eyespots are visible and no larvae hatch. In laboratory experiments, light is neither necessary for eyespot development, nor for hatching. By contrast to the laboratory experiments, the field experiment show that naturally changing temperature and photoperiod play a significant role in the seasonal regulation of embryonic development. The post-eyespot development is more variable and influenced by temperature and photoperiod than the pre-eyespot development. This developmental plasticity at the end of the embryogenesis might be a general pattern in the Libellulidae, helping them to cope with variation in environmental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Formaldehyde is a poisonous and harmful gas, which is ubiquitous in our daily life. Long-term exposure to formaldehyde harms human body functions; therefore, it is urgent to fabricate sensors for the real-time monitoring of formaldehyde concentrations. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors is favored by researchers as a result of their low cost, simple operation and portability. In this paper, the mechanism of formaldehyde detection by gas sensors is introduced, and then the ways of ameliorating the response of gas sensors for formaldehyde detection in recent years are summarized. These methods include the control of the microstructure and morphology of sensing materials, the doping modification of matrix materials, the development of new semiconductor sensing materials, the outfield control strategy and the construction of the filter membrane. Simple Summary: Semiochemical-baited traps are used to survey insect communities and detect invasive species. These traps are left in the field during the growing season where large amounts of pollen and other debris can build up on smooth trapping surfaces. There was a concern this buildup would provide an escape route for some insects and interfere with trapping results. We tested the effects of this pollen buildup on captures of bark and woodboring beetles in northeastern forests in two experiments. While many beetles did not respond to treatments, we found a positive effect of trap cleaning for three bark beetles and one cerambycid species. The response of other species was more nuanced. Two experiments were conducted in mixed hardwood-conifer forests in the northeastern United States to test the effects of cleaning surfactant and non-surfactant treated multiple-funnel traps used to catch bark and woodboring beetles. Large amounts of pollen and other debris often form a crust on the interior of traps (personal observations). Such surface deposits may provide footholds for beetles to escape capture in traps. In one experiment, we tested cleaned surfactant and non-surfactant traps against non-cleaned surfactant and non-surfactant traps. In a second experiment, we tested field cleaning of modified multiple-funnel traps as an alternative to substituting clean traps on each collection visit. There was no effect of surfactant treated traps, cleaned or not, on total beetles or individual bark beetle species captured. However, in situ cleaned traps were statistically better at capturing total beetles, total bark beetles, and several bark beetle species than non-cleaned control traps. Surfactant-treated non-modified traps and cleaned modified traps had higher species richness and abundance than other treatments at the site level. Our results suggest that cleaning traps to remove accumulated pollen and debris may be helpful for some species but would have limited benefit for broad-scale trapping of bark and woodboring beetles in northeastern forests. Dengue is an arboviral disease caused by dengue virus (DENV), which is transmitted to humans by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Infection by DENV most commonly results in a mild flu-like illness; however, the disease has been increasingly associated with neurological symptomatology. This association draws attention to further investigations on the impact of DENV infection in the host's central nervous system. Here, we analyzed brain samples of three fatal dengue cases that occurred in 2002 during an outbreak in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brain tissues of these cases were marked by histopathological alterations, such as degenerated neurons, demyelination, hemorrhage, edema, and increased numbers of astrocytes and microglial cells. Samples were also characterized by lymphocytic infiltrates mainly composed of CD8 T cells. DENV replication was evidenced in neurons, microglia and endothelial cells through immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IFN-γ were detected in microglia, while endothelial cells were marked by the expression of RANTES/CCL5. Cytoplasmic HMGB1 and the production of nitric oxide were also found in neurons and microglial cells. This work highlights the possible participation of several local pro-inflammatory mediators in the establishment of dengue neuropathogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of buprestid chemical ecology is sparse but the appearance of the invasive pest Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire in North America has provided the impetus to study in detail the semiochemistry and ecology of this important buprestid. The macrocyclic lactone (3Z)-12-dodecenolide [(3Z)-lactone] is identified as a key antennally-active compound that is produced by females and attracts males. Though a weak trap attractant alone, when combined with the host kairomone (3Z)-hexenol and the important visual cue of a green canopy trap, significant increases in male trap capture occur, thus defining (3Z)-lactone as both a sex pheromone of A. planipennis as well as the first and only known buprestid pheromone. The non-natural stereoisomer (3E)-12-dodecenolide and the saturated analog, 12-dodecanolide also exhibit mimetic activities towards male A. planipennis, suggesting a notable plasticity in this pheromonal structural motif. Efficient synthetic routes to these compounds have been developed. A series of fluoro-12-dodecanolides has also been synthesized containing CF2 groups as a strategy to bias the conformational space accessed by these macrolides and to assess if the analogs may act as mimetics for 12-dodecanolide pheromones associated in A. planipennis. These compounds also afford a unique opportunity to study the binding affinities of lactone surrogates with A. planipennis chemosensory proteins and olfactory receptors. Some progress has also been made in identifying the genes involved in the reception, processing and degradation of volatiles in this invasive insect. It is now evident that the behavior and ecology of A. planipennis involves a complex pattern of sensory modalities, including visual, tactile, olfactory and potentially acoustic components. Earlier reviews focused on studies of attractive host volatiles in development of a trapping system for early detection and visual and contact phenomena in A. planipennis mate finding. This review will update the semiochemistry and chemical ecology of A. planipennis and discuss studies on chemistry and behavior that have identified female-produced pheromone components and host kairomones. Sexual transmission of Zika virus (ZIKV) is a matter of great concern. Infectious viral particles can be shed in semen for as long as six months after infection and can be transferred to male and female sexual partners during unprotected sexual intercourse. The virus can be found inside spermatozoa and could be directly transferred to the oocyte during fertilization. Sexual transmission of ZIKV can contribute to the rise in number of infected individuals in endemic areas as well as in countries where the mosquito vector does not thrive. There is also the possibility, as has been demonstrated in mouse models, that the vaginal deposition of ZIKV particles present in semen could lead to congenital syndrome. In this paper, we review the current literature to understand ZIKV trafficking from the bloodstream to the human male reproductive tract and viral interactions with host cells in interstitial spaces, tubule walls, annexed glands and semen.
