1. Anomalous resistivity upturn in Co intercalated TaS$_2$

Abstract

Intercalation of magnetic atoms into the van der Waals gaps of layered transition metal dichalcogenides offers an excellent platform to produce exotic physical properties. Here, we report a detailed study of magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$. The temperature dependent resistivity measurements display anomalous upturn below 11 K, which persists in presence of magnetic field even up to 14 T. In the low temperature region, the resistivity upturn exhibits a unique $T^{1/2}$ scaling behavior, which remains unchanged when an external magnetic field is applied. The $T^{1/2}$ dependence of resistivity upturn is the hallmark of non-Fermi liquid state in orbital two-channel Kondo effect(2CK). This anomalous resistivity upturn in Co$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$ can be attributed to the orbital two-channel Kondo mechanism., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

2. Anisotropic magnetic properties of trigonal ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal

Abstract

We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of the ternary compound ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$. Single crystals of this compound were grown by high temperature solution growth technique,using Al:Ge eutectic composition as flux. From the powder x-ray diffraction we confirmed that ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type crystal structure. The anisotropic magnetic properties of a single crystal were investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity. A bulk magnetic ordering occurs around 4 K inferred from the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The magnetization measured along the $ab$-plane increases more rapidly than along the $c$-axis suggesting the basal $ab$-plane as the easy plane of magnetization. The magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the $4f$-derived part of the heat capacity in the paramagnetic regime analysed based on the point charge model of the crystalline electric field (CEF) indicate a relatively low CEF energy level splitting., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like phthalates, mostly discharged in industrial effluents, cause detrimental effects to different life forms, and hence their removal from constituent wastewater is necessary. This study investigated the kinetics of biomass growth and biodegradation of benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) by Arthrobacter sp. in a surfactant-aided batch system. The effect of different surfactants on aqueous solubility of BBP and DBP was initially examined, which showed that Tween 80 resulted in maximum bioavailability and biodegradation efficiency of the phthalates by the bacterium and without inhibiting the biomass growth. Compared with BBP, DBP was found to be efficiently degraded and supported the bacterial growth within a short period of time over the entire concentration tested in the range 100-1,000 mg L-1. A maximum biomass concentration of 1.819 g L-1 was obtained at 120 h for a DBP concentration of 600 mg L-1 in the presence of Tween 80, which is 5.66-fold increase in biomass concentration as compared with only DBP as the sole substrate. For evaluating the biokinetic parameters involved in DBP biodegradation, the experimental data on DBP utilization were fitted to various kinetic models as reported in the literature. A bulk antiferromagnetic ordering occurs around 4 K as inferred from the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The susceptibility is larger along the ab-plane and flattens out below the magnetic transition temperature ([Formula: see text]) and the magnetization in the ordered state increases more rapidly along the ab-plane than along the c-axis suggesting that the moments are inclined more towards the ab-plane. The magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the 4f -derived part of the heat capacity in the paramagnetic regime analysed based on the point charge model of the crystalline electric field (CEF) indicate a relatively low CEF energy level splitting.
