Classic psychedelics are currently re-emerging as therapeutic agents with unique clinical benefits; however, it is also important to recognize the adverse effects of this drug class. While the risk of seizures with this drug class is known, the literature is lacking in detail. We present a case of psychedelic mushroom-induced seizures in a person with refractory right temporal lobe epilepsy implanted with a responsive neurostimulation (RNS) system. A large increase in typical seizure frequency coincided with the ingestion of a large dose of the mushrooms. This is the first reported case of electrographically confirmed seizures associated with classic psychedelic drug use. With the surge of research and movements toward the clinical application of classic psychedelic compounds, the risk for drug-induced seizures should be considered, including factors such as a history of epilepsy and drug doses and regimens.

Objective: To determine whether blended learning results in better educational outcomes compared to traditional learning in the acquisition of oral surgery technical skills for 4th-year undergraduate dental students., Materials and Methods: Seventy-three students participated in this two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial. Only students in the blended learning group had access to the online preparation platform for oral surgery practical work (PW) on a pig's jaw and to the debriefing. Kirkpatrick's four-level model was used to assess the educational outcomes directly after (levels 1 and 2) and 6 months later, after the start of the students' clinical activity (levels 3 and 4)., Results: For level 1, higher global satisfaction scores were found for students in the blended learning compared to the traditional learning group (p = .002). For level 2, blended learning resulted in an increase in knowledge score (p < .01), comparable to that observed in the traditional learning group. For level 3, students in the blended group made more progress in 6 months than those in the traditional group in terms of feeling able to assess and perform anaesthesia (p = .040) and surgical tooth extraction (p = .043). No difference in level 4 was found for the 6-month clinical surgical activity between groups, but students in the blended group felt more able to assess and perform the surgical management of a failed extraction requiring bone removal (p = .044)., Conclusion: Blended learning for oral surgery PW had a positive impact on three of the four Kirkpatrick levels (level 1, 3 and 4). Efficient domestic wastewater management is essential for mitigating the impact of wastewater on human health and the environment. Wastewater management with conventional technologies generates sewage sludge. The present study considered a modelling approach to evaluate various processing pathways to produce energy from the sewage sludge. Anaerobic digestion, gasification, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal liquefaction are analysed in terms of their energy generation potentials with the Aspen Plus software. A techno-economic assessment is performed to assess the economic viability of each pathway. It reveals that gasification appears as the most promising method to produce electricity, with 0.76 kWh/kg drysludge , followed by anaerobic digestion (0.53 kWh/kg drysludge ), pyrolysis (0.34 kWh/kg drysludge ), and hydrothermal liquefaction (0.13 kWh/kg drysludge ). In contrast, the techno-economic analysis underscores the viability of anaerobic digestion with levelized cost of electricity as 0.02 $/kWh followed by gasification (0.11 $/kWh), pyrolysis (0.14 $/kWh), and hydrothermal liquefaction (2.21 $/kWh). At the same time, if the products or electricity from the processing unit is sold, equivalent results prevail. The present study is a comprehensive assessment of sludge management for researchers and policymakers. Background: An effective healthcare system depends on clinic, research, and patient/relatives interactions. Such interactions may at their core be challenged by misalignments of concepts and the practices that constitute them. The concept of consciousness and what is experienced and understood as signs of consciousness in patients with severe acquired brain injury is one of these potential areas of misalignment. Different perspectives and experiences of consciousness are challenging the delivery of care and the high-stake decision-making process on the potential withdrawal of treatment. The enhanced uncertainties call for reflections on how key stakeholders perceive and identify consciousness in current clinical encounters and practice., Methods: The study empirically explores the actual experiences and conceptions of consciousness concerning patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) from the perspectives of researchers, health professionals, and relatives of patients, to understand the challenges of the diversity of understandings of consciousness. Engaging the stakeholders by employing Group Concept Mapping methodology, the study developed a situated conceptual map, which reflects nuances and the importance of perspectives on and signs of consciousness., Results: Twenty-seven participants contributed to the generation of ideas, 14 took part in the structuring of statements and 10 took part in the validation meeting to interpret the cluster rating map. A total of 85 unique statements were identified and organized into six clusters: (1) Presence, (2) Intentional Activity, (3) Experience of self, (4) Participation in Social Interaction, (5) (Repeated) Response, and (6) Unspecific Reaction. The conceptual mapping demonstrates an extensive overlap in perspectives on consciousness among participants, prioritizing signs that are observable at the bedside., Conclusions: The study provides a first step toward a future framework for the difficult process of decision-making concerning a segment of patients with DoC. The study highlights the importance of repeatable signs of consciousness observed at the bedside and the patient's ability to participate in social interactions, while also considering the importance of non-clinically observable signs of consciousness., (© 2023. Traffic as the main source of urban air pollution created severe problems for human health and sustainability. To propose a bottom-up method in emissions reduction, accurate emission inventories of vehicles in a medium-sized city are developed. Traffic emission factors were obtained using traffic flow data, traffic control cameras, and International Vehicle Emission (IVE) model to calculate CO, VOCs, NOx, SOx, and PM of passenger cars, taxis, and urban buses emission inventory. Annual overall emissions of CO, VOCs, NOx, SOx, and PM pollutants, respectively, are 346, 20.9, 25, 44.4, and 0.5 kt/year. VOC and CO emissions in the start-up phase are in the scale of the running phase, while NOx, SOx, and PM allocate much less than the running phase. The highest emission value of SOx and PM occurs in arterials while CO, VOC, and NOx in highways. Eight renovation scenarios have been designed to evaluate their environmental and economic efficiency. Two scenarios entitled "renovation of carbureted, Euro 1 and Euro 2 LDV" and "renovation of high mileage Euro 1 and Euro 2 standard urban buses" showed the highest decrease in pollution emission and pollution social costs. For these two important scenarios, implementation costs were calculated at 477 and 46 M$, while social costs decrease are calculated to be 172.6 and 77.5 M$, respectively. Renovation of vehicles could benefit both the government and society by reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emission. The emission mitigation scenarios considering mobile sources could be a guide for adopting policies in developing countries. The assessment of VOC emission rates and sorption coefficients was performed for ten surfaces present within a classroom, using field and laboratory emission cells (FLEC) coupled to online and off-line VOC quantification techniques. A total of 21 identified VOCs were emitted by the different surfaces. VOC emission rates measured using PTR-ToF-MS were compared to gas chromatographic measurements. The results showed that the two methods are complementary to one another. Sorption parameters were also successfully measured for a mixture of 14 VOCs within a few hours (<17 hours per surface). A study of the spatial and temporal variability of the measured parameters was also carried out on the two surfaces that presented the most potential for interaction with VOCs, accounting for the largest surface areas within the room. The dataset of emission rates and sorption parameters was used in the INCA-Indoor model to predict indoor air concentrations of VOCs that are compared to experimental values measured in the room. Modeling results showed that sorption processes had a limited effect on indoor concentrations of VOCs for these field campaigns. Modeled daily profiles show good agreement with the experimental observations for VOCs such as toluene (indoor source) and xylenes (outdoor source) but underestimate concentrations of methanol (both indoor and outdoor sources)., (© 2018 John Wiley & Sons A/S. With an overarching goal of addressing global and regional sustainability challenges, Long Term Socio-Ecological Research Platforms (LTSER) aim to conduct place-based research, to collect and synthesize both environmental and socio-economic data, and to involve a broader stakeholder pool to set the research agenda. To date there have been few studies examining the output from LTSER platforms. In this study we enquire if the socio-ecological research from 25 self-selected LTSER platforms of the International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) network has produced research products which fulfil the aims and ambitions of the paradigm shift from ecological to socio-ecological research envisaged at the turn of the century. In total we assessed 4983 publically available publications, of which 1112 were deemed relevant to the socio-ecological objectives of the platform. A series of 22 questions were scored for each publication, assessing relevance of responses in terms of the disciplinary focus of research, consideration of human health and well-being, degree of stakeholder engagement, and other relevant variables. The results reflected the diverse origins of the individual platforms and revealed a wide range in foci, temporal periods and quantity of output from participating platforms, supporting the premise that there is a growing trend in socio-ecological research at long-term monitoring platforms. Our review highlights the challenges of realizing the top-down goal to harmonize international network activities and objectives and the need for bottom-up, self-definition for research platforms. The characteristics of indoor light (intensity, spectral, spatial distribution) originating from outdoors have been studied using experimental and modeling tools. They are influenced by many parameters such as building location, meteorological conditions, and the type of window. They have a direct impact on indoor air quality through a change in chemical processes by varying the photolysis rates of indoor pollutants. Transmittances of different windows have been measured and exhibit different wavelength cutoffs, thus influencing the potential of different species to be photolysed. The spectral distribution of light entering indoors through the windows was measured under different conditions and was found to be weakly dependent on the time of day for indirect cloudy, direct sunshine, partly cloudy conditions contrary to the light intensity, in agreement with calculations of the transmittance as a function of the zenithal angle and the calculated outdoor spectral distribution. The same conclusion can be drawn concerning the position within the room. The impact of these light characteristics on the indoor chemistry has been studied using the INCA-Indoor model by considering the variation in the photolysis rates of key indoor species. The photolysis of HONO has been found to be the oxidation driver through OH formation in the indoor air measurement campaign SURFin, an extensive campaign carried out in July 2012 in a classroom in Marseille. In this study, the INCA-Indoor model is used to evaluate different HONO formation mechanisms that have been used previously in indoor air quality models. In order to avoid biases in the results due to the uncertainty in rate constants, those parameters were adjusted to fit one representative day of the SURFin campaign. Then, the mechanisms have been tested with the optimized parameters against other experiments carried out during the SURFin campaign. Based on the observations and these findings, we propose a new mechanism incorporating sorption of NO 2 onto surfaces with possible saturation of these surfaces. OH and HO 2 profiles measured in a real environment have been compared to the results of the INCA-Indoor model to improve our understanding of indoor chemistry. Significant levels of both radicals have been measured and their profiles display similar diurnal behavior, reaching peak concentrations during direct sunlight (up to 1.6×10 6 and 4.0×10 7  cm -3 for OH and HO 2 , respectively). Concentrations of O 3 , NO x , volatile organic compounds (VOCs), HONO, and photolysis frequencies were constrained to the observed values. The HO x profiles are well simulated in terms of variation for both species (Pearson's coefficients: p OH =0.55, p HO 2 =0.76) and concentration for OH (mean normalized bias error: MNBE OH =-30%), HO 2 concentration being always underestimated (MNBE HO 2 =-62%). Production and loss pathways analysis confirmed HONO photolysis role as an OH precursor (here up to 50% of the production rate). HO 2 formation is linked to OH-initiated VOC oxidation. A sensitivity analysis was conducted by varying HONO, VOCs, and NO concentrations. OH, HO 2 , and formaldehyde concentrations increase with HONO concentrations; OH and formaldehyde concentrations are weakly dependent on NO, whereas HO 2 concentrations are strongly reduced with increasing NO. A test emission chamber called CLIMPAQ has been coupled to a chromatography analyzer GC to measure volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentration during a sorption experiments (Fast sorption measurements of VOCs on building materials: Part 2 - Comparison between FLEC and CLIMPAQ methods, (Rizk et al., In press) [1]). The equations used to calculate the mass transfer coefficient and the thickness of the boundary layer developed on the surface of a material are presented. In addition, the experimental profiles obtained using the CLIMPAQ chamber is also presented in the presence and the absence of a building material. Finally, the impact of chamber size on the obtained concentration profile using different chambers is shown using 3 types of chambers having different volumes, 1 m(3), 30 m(3) and a micro chamber of 40 mL.
