SummaryHippocampus-neocortex interactions during sleep are critical for memory processes: hippocampally-initiated replay contributes to memory consolidation in the neocortex and hippocampal sharp wave/ripples are linked to generalized increases in neocortical cell activity and DOWN-UP state transitions. Yet, the spatial and temporal patterns of this exchange are unknown. With voltage imaging, electrocorticography, and laminarly-resolved hippocampal potentials, we characterized cortico-hippocampal interactions during anesthesia and NREM sleep. We observed neocortical activation transients spanning multiple spatial scales hinting at a quasi-critical regime. Transients were organized in a small number of functional networks matching known anatomical connectivity. A network overlapping with the default mode network and centered on retrosplenial cortex was the most associated with the hippocampus. Interestingly, hippocampal slow gamma was the oscillation that best correlated with this neocortical network, outpacing ripples. In fact, neocortical activity predicted hippocampal slow gamma and followed ripples, suggesting that consolidation processes rely on bi-directional exchanges between hippocampus and neocortex.

During NREM sleep hippocampal Sharp-wave ripples (SWR) events are thought to stabilize memory traces for long-term storage in downstream neocortical structures. Within the neocortex, Default Mode Network (DMN) areas interact preferentially with the hippocampus purportedly to consolidate those traces. Transient bouts of slow oscillations and sleep spindles in DMN areas are often observed around SWRs, suggesting that these two activities are related and that their interplay possibly contributes to memory consolidation. To investigate how SWRs interact with the DMN and spindles, we combined cortical wide-field voltage imaging, ECoG, and hippocampal LFP recordings in anesthetized and sleeping mice. Here we show that, during SWR, “up-states” and spindles reliably co-occur in a cortical subnetwork centered around the Retrosplenial cortex. Furthermore, Retrosplenial transient activations and spindles predict Slow Gamma oscillations in CA1 during SWRs. Together, our results suggest that Retrosplenial-hippocampal interaction may be a central source of information exchange between cortex and hippocampus.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized neuropathologically by amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Vascular pathology caused by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (HP) is hypothesised to exacerbate AD pathology and has emerged as an increasing cause of age-related cognitive impairment. In this study we examined the effects of gradual cerebral HP on cognitive dysfunction, Aβ pathology, microgliosis, and cortical network dynamics in C57BL/6J mice and a single App knock-in mouse model of AD (AppNL-G-F). We performed unilateral common carotid artery gradual occlusion (UCAgO) in two-month-old mice using an ameroid constrictor. At 4 months of age, animals were tested in a behavioral battery consisting of tests of spatial learning and memory (Morris water task), recognition memory (novel object recognition task), and motor coordination (balance beam). Following behavioural testing,in vivomesoscale wide-field voltage imaging was done to assess cortical functional connectivity and sensory-evoked cortical activity, and brains were harvested for pathology characterization using immunohistochemistry. We found that UCAgO reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the occluded hemisphere (OH), however, subtle behavioural deficits were observed due to HP. A dissociative effect of HP was observed in resting-state functional connectivity analysis, where HP led to hyper-connectivity in C57 mice and hypo-connectivity in App mice. Interestingly, sensory stimulation of limbs contralateral to OH revealed hyper-cortical activations in the non-occluded hemisphere of C57 HP mice, however, hypo-cortical activations were observed in App HP mice. Furthermore, we found that the UCAgO increased cortical and hippocampal microgliosis in both hemispheres of C57 and App mice, a bilateral increase in Aβ deposition was only observed in App mice. These results suggest that gradual cerebral HP leads to cortical network alterations in AD, which is partly mediated via activation of microglia.

The fault feature signal of rolling bearing can be characterized as the narrow-band signal with a specific resonance frequency. Therefore, resonance demodulation analysis is a powerful damage detection technique of bearings. In addition to the fault feature signal, the measured vibration signals carry various interference components, and these interference components become a serious obstacle of fault feature extraction. Variational mode extraction is a novel signal analysis method designed to retrieve a specific signal component from the composite signal. Variational mode extraction is founded on a similar basis as variational mode decomposition, while it shows better accuracy and higher efficiency compared with variational mode decomposition. In this study, variational mode extraction is introduced to the resonance demodulation analysis of bearing fault. As the results of variational mode extraction analysis are greatly influenced by the choice of two parameters, that is, the balancing factor α and the initial guess of center frequency ωd, an optimized variational mode extraction method is further developed. First, a new fault information evaluation index for measuring the richness of fault characteristics of the signal, termed ensemble impulsiveness and cyclostationarity, is formulated. Second, the ensemble impulsiveness and cyclostationarity is used as the fitness function of particle swarm optimization to automatically determine the optimal values of α and ωd. Finally, the validity of optimized variational mode extraction method is verified by simulated and experimental analysis, and the superiority of optimized variational mode extraction method is highlighted through comparison with two other advanced resonance demodulation analysis approaches, that is, the improved kurtogram and infogram. The analysis results indicate that optimized variational mode extraction method has a powerful capability of resonance demodulation analysis.

Objective: Recent advances in development of low-cost single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) headbands have opened new possibilities for applications in health monitoring and brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. These recorded EEG signals, however, are often contaminated by eye blink artifacts that can yield the fallacious interpretation of the brain activity. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm, VME-DWT, to remove eye blinks in a short segment of the single EEG channel. Method: The proposed algorithm: (a) locates eye blink intervals using Variational Mode Extraction (VME) and (b) filters only contaminated EEG interval using an automatic Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) algorithm. The performance of VME-DWT is compared with an automatic Variational Mode Decomposition (AVMD) and a DWT-based algorithms, proposed for suppressing eye blinks in a short segment of the single EEG channel. Results: The VME-DWT detects and filters 95% of the eye blinks from the contaminated EEG signals with SNR ranging from −8 to +3 dB. The VME-DWT shows superiority to the AVMD and DWT with the higher mean value of correlation coefficient (0.92 vs. 0.83, 0.58) and lower mean value of RRMSE (0.42 vs. 0.59, 0.87). Significance: The VME-DWT can be a suitable algorithm for removal of eye blinks in low-cost single-channel EEG systems as it is: (a) computationally-efficient, the contaminated EEG signal is filtered in millisecond time resolution, (b) automatic, no human intervention is required, (c) low-invasive, EEG intervals without contamination remained unaltered, and (d) low-complexity, without need to the artifact reference.

A network of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain innerve the forebrain and are proposed to contribute to a variety of functions including attention, and cortical plasticity. This study examined the contribution of the nucleus basalis cholinergic projection to the sensorimotor cortex on recovery on a skilled reach-to-eat task following photothrombotic stroke in the forelimb region of the somatosensory cortex. Mice were trained to perform a single-pellet skilled reaching task and their pre and poststroke performance, from Day 4 to Day 28 poststroke, was assessed frame-by-frame by video analysis with end point, movement and sensorimotor integration measures. Somatosensory forelimb lesions produced impairments in endpoint and movement component measures of reaching and increased the incidence of fictive eating, a sensory impairment in mistaking a missed reach for a successful reach. Upregulated acetylcholine (ACh) release, as measured by local field potential recording, elicited via optogenetic stimulation of the nucleus basalis improved recovery of reaching and improved movement scores but did not affect a sensorimotor integration impairment poststroke. The results show that the mouse cortical forelimb somatosensory region contributes to forelimb motor behavior and suggest that ACh upregulation could serve as an adjunct to behavioral therapy for the acute treatment of stroke.

Sleep consists of two basic stages: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. NREM sleep is characterized by slow high-amplitude cortical EEG signals, while REM sleep is characterized desynchronized cortical rhythms. While, until recently, it has been widely believed that cortical activity during REM sleep is globally desynchronized, recent electrophysiological studies showed slow waves (SW) in some cortical areas during REM sleep. Electrophysiological techniques, however, have been unable to resolve the regional structure of these activities, due to relatively sparse sampling. We mapped functional gradients in cortical activity during REM sleep using mesoscale imaging in mice, and observed local SW patterns occurring mainly in somatomotor and auditory cortical regions, with minimum presence within the default mode network. The role of the cholinergic system in local desynchronization during REM sleep was also explored by calcium imaging of cholinergic terminal activity within the mouse cortex. Terminal activity was weaker in regions exhibiting SW activity more frequently during REM sleep. We also analyzed Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity dataset and found that these regions have weaker cholinergic projections from the basal forebrain.

A novel nebulizing spray hydrolysis approach was used for preparation of semi-transparent superhydrophobic coatings. Methyltrimethoxysilane was dissolved in water:ethanol mixture and ultrasonically sprayed on different substrates. Superhydrophobic coatings with a contact angle (CA) as high as 164° and a sliding angle below 5° were obtained. FESEM and AFM revealed a hierarchical micro-nano binary structure with nanometric roughness of the coatings. The coated glass substrate exhibited transmittance close to 80%. The prepared coating showed great self-cleaning and water jet repellency behaviors. The superhydrophobicity of the samples was remained after subjecting to ambient conditions for 50 days. The coating was also durable under water flushing test.

Magnetic reduced graphene oxide/polymer nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization and grafting of polyacrylamide on the surface of functionalized magnetic reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Graphene oxide nanosheets were decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, reduced and functionalized with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, and then grafted with polyacrylamide. Grafting of polyacrylamide makes magnetic rGO hydrophilic and highly water dispersible. The prepared material was used as adsorbent for removal of an anionic dye, Congo red, and a maximum adsorption capacity up to 166.7 mg g−1 was obtained. The kinetics and isotherm of adsorption and the effect of experimental condition on adsorption capacity were also investigated.

As the residual vision following a traumatic optic nerve injury can spontaneously recover over time, we explored the plasticity of cortical networks during the early post-optic nerve crush (ONC) phase. Using in vivo wide-field calcium imaging on awake Thy1-GCaMP6s mice, we characterized resting state and evoked cortical activity before, during, and 30 days after ONC. The recovery of monocular visual acuity and depth perception was evaluated at the same time points. Cortical responses to an LED flash decreased in the contralateral hemisphere in the primary visual cortex and in the secondary visual areas following the ONC, but was partially rescued between 3 and 5 days post-ONC, remaining stable thereafter. The connectivity between visual and non-visual regions was disorganized after the crush, as shown by a decorrelation, but correlated activity was restored 30 days after the injury. The number of surviving retinal ganglion cells dramatically dropped and remained low. At the behavioral level, the ONC resulted in visual acuity loss on the injured side and an increase in visual acuity with the non-injured eye. In conclusion, our results show a reorganization of connectivity between visual and associative cortical areas after an ONC, which is indicative of spontaneous cortical plasticity.

The advent of genetically encoded calcium indicators, along with surgical preparations such as thinned skulls or refractive-index-matched skulls, has enabled mesoscale cortical activity imaging in head-fixed mice. However, neural activity during unrestrained behavior substantially differs from neural activity in head-fixed animals. For whole-cortex imaging in freely behaving mice, we present the ‘mini-mScope’, a widefield, miniaturized, head-mounted fluorescence microscope that is compatible with transparent polymer skull preparations. With a field of view of 8 × 10 mm2 and weighing less than 4 g, the mini-mScope can image most of the mouse dorsal cortex with resolutions ranging from 39 to 56 µm. We used the mini-mScope to record mesoscale calcium activity across the dorsal cortex during sensory-evoked stimuli, open field behaviors, social interactions and transitions from wakefulness to sleep. The mini-mScope is a miniature microscope that can image neural activity at the mesoscale in most of the dorsal cortex of freely behaving mice.

The advent of genetically encoded calcium indicators, along with surgical preparations such as thinned skulls or refractive index matched skulls, have enabled mesoscale cortical activity imaging in head-fixed mice. Such imaging studies have revealed complex patterns of coordinated activity across the cortex during spontaneous behaviors, goal-directed behavior, locomotion, motor learning, and perceptual decision making. However, neural activity during unrestrained behavior significantly differs from neural activity in head-fixed animals. Whole-cortex imaging in freely behaving mice will enable the study of neural activity in a larger, more complex repertoire of behaviors not possible in head-fixed animals. Here we present the “Mesoscope,” a wide-field miniaturized, head-mounted fluorescence microscope compatible with transparent polymer skulls recently developed by our group. With a field of view of 8 mm x 10 mm and weighing less than 4 g, the Mesoscope can image most of the mouse dorsal cortex with resolution ranging from 39 to 56 µm. Stroboscopic illumination with blue and green LEDs allows for the measurement of both fluorescence changes due to calcium activity and reflectance signals to capture hemodynamic changes. We have used the Mesoscope to successfully record mesoscale calcium activity across the dorsal cortex during sensory-evoked stimuli, open field behaviors, and social interactions. Finally, combining the mesoscale imaging with electrophysiology enabled us to measure dynamics in extracellular glutamate release in the cortex during the transition from wakefulness to natural sleep.

A prevalent model is that sharp-wave ripples (SWR) arise ‘spontaneously’ in CA3 and propagate recent memory traces outward to the neocortex to facilitate memory consolidation there. Using voltage and extracellular glutamate transient recording over widespread regions of mice dorsal neocortex in relation to CA1 multiunit activity (MUA) and SWR, we find that the largest SWR-related modulation occurs in retrosplenial cortex; however, contrary to the unidirectional hypothesis, neocortical activation exhibited a continuum of activation timings relative to SWRs, varying from leading to lagging. Thus, contrary to the model in which SWRs arise ‘spontaneously’ in the hippocampus, neocortical activation often precedes SWRs and may thus constitute a trigger event in which neocortical information seeds associative reactivation of hippocampal ‘indices’. This timing continuum is consistent with a dynamics in which older, more consolidated memories may in fact initiate the hippocampal-neocortical dialog, whereas reactivation of newer memories may be initiated predominantly in the hippocampus.

The variational mode extraction (VME) developed on the similar basis of variational mode decomposition (VMD) can effectively separate a specific mode by knowing an approximate center frequency from the multi-component signal. Compared with VMD, VME has made certain progress in improving the extraction accuracy and reducing the computational cost when the aim is to separate a specific mode. As the fault feature signal of rolling bearing is usually a band-limited signal which is compact around the excited resonant frequency, VME becomes a potentially effective tool for extracting fault characteristics of rolling bearing. However, how to adaptively determine the center frequency and the penalty factor are two difficult problems when using VME to separate the desired component. Accordingly, this paper presents the recursive variational mode extraction (RVME), an iterative VME-based signal decomposition algorithm. At each iteration of RVME, the initial center frequency and penalty factor for the reconstruction of a specific sub-component can be adaptively determined according to the dominant frequency of the residual signal of the previous iterative decomposition, which makes RVME an adaptive signal decomposition algorithm. The presented method is applied to simulated and experimental fault signals and compared with other classical fault feature extraction approaches, such as variational mode decomposition (VMD) and spectral kurtosis (SK). The results confirm that the established method can extract the fault features as effective as VMD, but it is significantly better than VMD in terms of computational efficiency. Meanwhile, the proposed method shows a stronger capability of weak bearing fault feature extraction and compound fault feature separation compared with SK.

Nanocomposite thin film of N-doped ZnO-CuO was deposited on glass substrate using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. Zinc acetate, copper acetate and ammonium acetate with different molar ratios were dissolved in water and used as precursors. A crumpled-shape morphology consisting of nanometer-sized particles was observed with FESEM. The elemental composition was evaluated with EDX analysis and the presence of nitrogen, oxygen, copper and zinc was confirmed. XRD analysis revealed the presence of ZnO and CuO crystalline phases with crystallite size of about 18 nm. The prepared nanocomposites exhibited high photocatalytic activity in degradation of methyl orange under UV light irradiation.

Background:Awaiting organ transplantation can be stressful, and pretransplant candidates’ religious and cultural beliefs can influence how they adapt to the stress. While little is known about the effect religious and cultural beliefs have on the pretransplant waiting period, virtually nothing is known regarding whether and how Shia Muslim patients’ religious and cultural beliefs facilitate more positive patient outcomes while they await transplantation. Therefore, it is important for nurses and other health care providers to understand transplant candidates’ experiences dealing with the stressors that present themselves during the pretransplant waiting period, especially how their religious and cultural beliefs affect their adaptation to the stressors.Aim:The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of Shia Muslim organ transplant candidates regarding how their religious and cultural beliefs affect their adaptation to the pretransplant waiting period.Sample:A purposeful sample of 11 Shia Muslim organ transplant candidates who were on an organ transplant waiting list in Iran (kidney,n= 4; heart,n= 4; liver,n= 3) was recruited.Method:A qualitative research design using the hermeneutical phenomenological approach was utilized in this study. In-depth unstructured interviews were conducted by one of the authors (ZS) in different locations across Iran.Results:Data analysis led to the development of six themes: “the misty road of organ transplantation,” “to accede to organ transplantation despite religious conflict,” “one step away from death,” “the master key of liberation,” “fear of the unknown,” and “reliance on God.”Nursing Implications:The findings of this study will help nurses understand the religious and cultural meaning associated with stressors experienced by Shia Muslim patients awaiting organ transplant. This information can assist nurses to develop plans of care that include patient-specific interventions that take into consideration the patients’ religious and cultural beliefs.Conclusion:Shia Muslim patients awaiting organ transplantation experience feelings that are often in conflict with their religious and cultural beliefs. However, the patients’ reliance on God during the pretransplant waiting period facilitated healthier attitudes regarding transplantation.

A superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating was fabricated using a simple procedure. The nanocomposite is composed of an acrylic copolymer and modified silica nanoparticles. The acrylic copolymer was prepared by free radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and dodeycl methacrylate monomers. Silica nanoparticles were synthesized and modified with an alkyl silane reagent, hexadecyltrimethoxysilane. A mixture of acrylic copolymer and modified silica nanoparticles, dispersed in dichloromethane, was then sprayed on glass and filter paper surface. Chemical composition and structure of the coatings were investigated by FTIR, FESEM, AFM, 1H-NMR and GPC. The wettability of the prepared coating was examined by water contact angle measurement. The results showed that superhydrophobic surfaces with contact angle above 150° and rough structures were obtained. The prepared coatings also exhibited superoleophilic and self-cleaning properties.

The silica particles in rice husk ash are useful to create the roughness required by the superhydrophobic coating on concrete. The superhydrophobic coating was prepared using rice husk ash dispersed in the ethanolic solution containing fluoroalkyl silane, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl triethoxy silane (2 vol.%). The ash solution was sprayed on a layer of commercial adhesive coated on the concrete. The water contact angle of 152.3 ± 0.5° on the coated concrete was observed. The cumulative water uptake was reduced as much as 40.38% while the water sorptivity was reduced up to 44.44%. The penetration of water into the coated concrete under the water pressure of 500 kPa was successfully reduced after 72 h, but not fully prevented. The ash coating did not affect the surface hardness or the compressive strength significantly, but the ash coating resulted in a higher ultrasonic velocity due to the reduction of surface porosity.

A new magnetic heterogeneous copper catalyst was prepared by immobilization of copper ions onto a cross-linked polymeric nanocomposite composed of starch grafted polyacrylamide and functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. The resulting support was loaded with large amounts of copper ions (1.6 mmol g−1). The prepared catalyst is highly active in Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of different azides and alkynes at low catalyst amounts. Various corresponding 1,2,3-triazoles were produced with high yields in mild conditions. The catalyst was easily recovered and reused for ten cycles of reaction and no significant loss of catalytic activity was observed.

Porous nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared using CaCO3 particles as solid porogens. The hydrogels were prepared by polymerization and grafting of acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid onto the starch in the presence of CaCO3 and graphene oxide. CaCO3 solid porogens were then removed by washing with acid and porous structures were obtained. The prepared hydrogels were used as adsorbents for methylene blue as a model cationic dye; and a very high adsorption capacity, up to 714.29 mg g−1, was obtained. Kinetics and isotherms of adsorption and the effect of porosity of hydrogel as well as other experimental conditions were also investigated. The prepared adsorbents were recovered and reused for several cycles, and high removal efficiency was observed even after five cycles of adsorption.

Variational mode decomposition (VMD) is a powerful technique for concurrently decomposing a signal into its constituent intrinsic modes. However, the performance of VMD will be degraded if the number of modes available in the signal is not precisely known. In this paper, we introduce a new method, namely successive variational mode decomposition (SVMD), which extracts the modes successively and does not need to know the number of modes. The method considers the mode as a signal with maximally compact spectrum, as VMD does. It achieves the mode decomposition by adding some criteria to the optimization problem of VMD: the mode of interest has no or less spectral overlap to the other modes and to the residual signal. Our simulations on some artificial and real world data have demonstrated that the new method without knowing the number of modes converges to the same modes as VMD does with knowing the precise number of modes. Moreover, the computational complexity of SVMD is much lower than that of VMD. Another advantage of SVMD over VMD is more robustness against the initial values of the center frequencies of modes.

Magnetic nanocomposite hydrogels containing different amounts of graphene oxide were synthesized and characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM, VSM and UV-vis spectroscopy. The prepared hydrogels were used as adsorbents for removal of a cationic dye, crystal violet, from water. The kinetics and isotherm of adsorption and the effect of different experimental conditions such as graphene oxide content, pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial dye concentration on adsorption capacity were then investigated. Parameters related to kinetics and isotherm models were calculated and discussed. It was found that adsorption is well-described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. The synthesized adsorbents showed high efficiency in removal of crystal violet and a very high adsorption capacity was obtained (769.23 mg g−1). No significant loss of removal efficiency was observed even after five cycles of adsorption.

In this study, crumpled-shape nanocomposite of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped ZnO–CeO2 (NSZC) was deposited on FTO substrate using one-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Zinc acetate, cerium nitrate, and thiourea were dissolved in deionized water and used as starting solution. The samples were characterized using FESEM, XRD, UV–vis spectroscopy, EIS, and PL. The as-prepared nitrogen and sulfur co-doped ZnO–CeO2 nanocomposites were evaluated as high photocatalysts for degradation of methyl orange. Nearly 100% photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange was achieved for 180 min. The photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that co-doping of nitrogen and sulfur could promote the suppression of electron-hole recombination.

In the current research on measuring complex behaviours/phenotyping in rodents, most of the experimental design requires animal-experimenter interaction in which the animal is removed from its home-cage environment and placed in an unfamiliar apparatus (novel environment). This may influence behaviour, general well-being, and metabolism of the animal, effecting the phenotypic outcome even if the data collection method is automated. Most of the commercially available solutions for home-cage monitoring are expensive and usually lack the flexibility to be incorporated with the existing home-cages. Here we present a low-cost solution for monitoring home-cage behaviour of rodents that can be easily incorporated practically with any available rodent home-cage. This system is based on a Raspberry Pi (RPi), which is a low-cost (35$) credit-card sized single board computer. We developed a web interface that allows the user to view the animal activity in the home-cage in real-time and to change camera settings, start/stop recording, download saved videos/images and control peripherals attached to the general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins of the Raspberry Pi. In addition, we provide custom written scripts for offline tracking, activity monitoring and synchronously acquire video from multiple cameras. To demonstrate the use of our system, we collected sleep-wake behavioural data of animals (n=5) for 200 min and simultaneously recording hippocampal local field potential (LFP) and electromyography (EMG) data. From the video data, the periods of continuous inactivity that were longer than 40 secs were identified as sleep periods. It was observed that these inactive periods are 91.6% ± 0.4 accurate with respect to LFP/EMG recordings, suggesting a prominent application of our system in sleep and circadian rhythm studies. In conclusion, this paper presents an innovative and flexible methodology for studying rodent behaviour with minimal experimenter interference. Our approach for automated acquisition of video-based behavioural data provides a tool that facilitates the analysis of behavior as a medium to study brain function.

Nanostructured materials have attracted much attention in recent decades. Nowadays, there are numerous nanomaterials with several applications. The ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method is a cost-effective and adaptable technique based on an aerosol process for synthesizing nanoparticles and depositing thin films. The technique is capable of synthesizing metal, oxide, and composite nanomaterials with precisely controllable morphologies and chemical compositions using metal salts in aqueous solvents. More importantly, it is popular, as evident from the growing number of studies being conducted on the technique. Here, we review studies conducted on basic principles and applications of the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method and investigate effects due to its main parameters including the solution flow rate, the pyrolysis temperature, the distance between the nozzle and the substrate, the pyrolysis time, the carrier gas (oxygen/nitrogen) flow rate, and the precursor solution concentration on morphological properties of the prepared structures.

A novel superabsorbent composite based on kappa-Carrageenan (κC) was prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) onto κC in the presence of bentonite powder using methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent, ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator, and sodium carbonate as a pore-forming agent. The swelling behavior in distilled water and in solutions with different pH values was investigated. The results indicated that with increasing carrageenan/bentonite weight ratio, the swelling capacity is increased but the gel content is decreased. The swelling rate of the hydrogels was improved by introducing sodium carbonate as pore-forming agent. The prepared superadsorbent composites were used as adsorbent for a cationic dye, methylene blue. Isotherm of adsorption and the effect of pH, adsorption dosage, contact time and initial dye concentration on dye adsorption were also studied. The results showed that maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue on the prepared adsorbents is 156.25 mg g−1 and adsorption is well-described by Langmuir isotherm model.

This study investigated the effect of topic interest and l2 proficiency on Iranian EFL learners’ writing skill. To fulfil this objective, 60 (30 pre-intermediate and 30 intermediate) learners from two high schools in Zarindasht, Fars, Iran were selected based on administering an Oxford Quick Placement Test. The selected participants were then non-randomly divided into two equal experimental groups; namely Pre-Intermediate High-Interest Topics group (PHIT group) and Intermediate Low-Interest Topics group (ILIT group). After that, the topic interest questionnaire was given to the students to assess their interest level in each topic. When the students’ level of interest was specified, the PHIT group received five high-interest topics and five low-interest topics were given to the ILIT group. Then, the researcher measured the participants’ English writing skill by administering a researcher-made writing pre-test. In both groups’ classroom, the interested topics were taught to learners in 12 sessions and learners wrote on each topic. After the instruction, a writing post-test was administered to the both groups and finally the data were analyzed by using paired and independent samples t-tests. The obtained results indicated that there was a significant difference between the post-tests of PHIT and ILIT groups. The findings indicated that the PHIT group significantly outperformed the ILIT group (p < .05) on the post-test. The implications of this study can make the teachers aware that topic interest plays an important role in improving writing skill.

Recording and monitoring of respiratory signal has a great importance in medical fields. Old methods for recording this signal are mostly expensive, affected from the environmental conditions and troublesome for the patient. Consequently, using indirect methods like ECG-derived respiratory signal (EDR) is an appropriate solution for reducing above problems. In this regard, multi resolution decomposition methods such as empirical mode decomposition (EMD) methods were proposed to solve the problem, however they could not get satisfactory results if the noise were present in the ECG signal. We previously proposed that the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method could be used as a precise and robust method to extract EDR, however the high computational burden of VMD was a problem. In this paper, we propose a new method based on VMD with a lowered computational complexity and a better precision in EDR detection. several tests on artificial and real ECG data confirm the good performance of the new method.
