2. Wikipedia in academia as a teaching tool: from averse to proactive faculty profiles

Abstract

This study concerned the active use of Wikipedia as a teaching tool in the classroom in higher education, trying to identify different usage profiles and their characterization. A questionnaire survey was administrated to all full-time and part-time teachers at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, both in Barcelona, Spain. The questionnaire was designed using the Technology Acceptance Model as a reference, including items about teachers web 2.0 profile, Wikipedia usage, expertise, perceived usefulness, easiness of use, visibility and quality, as well as Wikipedia status among colleagues and incentives to use it more actively. Clustering and statistical analysis were carried out using the k-medoids algorithm and differences between clusters were assessed by means of contingency tables and generalized linear models (logit). The respondents were classified in four clusters, from less to more likely to adopt and use Wikipedia in the classroom, namely averse (25.4%), reluctant (17.9%), open (29.5%) and proactive (27.2%). Proactive faculty are mostly men teaching part-time in STEM fields, mainly engineering, while averse faculty are mostly women teaching full-time in non-STEM fields. Nevertheless, questionnaire items related to visibility, quality, image, usefulness and expertise determine the main differences between clusters, rather than age, gender or domain. Clusters involving a positive view of Wikipedia and at least some frequency of use clearly outnumber those with a strictly negative stance. This goes against the common view that faculty members are mostly sceptical about Wikipedia. 3. Flow Experiences in Personalised E-Learning Environments and the Role of Gender and Academic Performance

Abstract

The successful move to a new generation of technologies that provide students with personalised e-learning environments is connected to their ability to facilitate flow experiences -- through which e-learners feel fully engaged in the educational activities at hand. However, little is known about the heterogeneous influence of subjective and education-related elements intervening in the formation of flow experiences and the moderating effects of gender and academic performance. This paper contributes to the existing literature by building an integrative model that captures the formation of flow in personalised e-learning environments. The results yielded by a study to test this model have largely confirmed that subjective and education-related constructs significantly predict flow and show the moderating impact of gender and academic performance.

13. The utilitarian and hedonic value of immersive experiences on WeChat: examining a dual mediation path leading to users' stickiness and the role of social norms.

Abstract

Purpose: An integrative model that predicts users' stickiness to WeChat is built. In the proposed model, perceived value plays a dual mediating role in the causal pathway from users' immersive experiences of presence and flow to their engagement and stickiness. Furthermore, presence is treated as a bi-dimensional construct made up of spatial feelings and the sense of being in company, and users' engagement is conceived as cognitive, affective and behavioural contributions to WeChat's marketing functions. Design/methodology/approach: The authors develop a measurement instrument and analyse data from a survey of 917 WeChat users. They use a hybrid partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and neural network approach to confirm the reliability and validity of the measurement items and all the relationships between the constructs. Findings: The paper provides robust evidence about the mediating influences of both utilitarian and hedonic value on users' engagement with the immersive experiences of presence and flow. An additional finding highlights the role of social norms in engagement and stickiness. Originality/value: Rather than studying the effects of the immersive experiences of presence and flow from either a hedonic or a utilitarian perspective, the authors consider how immersive experiences shape both utilitarian and hedonic value, as well as their joint impact (along with that of social norms) on users' engagement and stickiness. 14. Flow in E-learning: What Drives It and Why It Matters

Abstract

This paper seeks to explain why some individuals sink further into states of flow than others, and what effects flow has in the context of a virtual education environment. Our findings--gathered from both questionnaire and behavioural data--reveal that flow states are elicited by the e-learners' senses of controlling the virtual education environment, their attention centred on the learning activity, and their feelings of physically being in such an environment. We bring evidence about three benefits from flow states: they facilitate e-learner's positive emotions, they enhance e-learners' academic performance, and they contribute to students' effective continuance in e-learning.

Abstract

La metodología basada en modelos de ecuaciones estructurales, puede resultar de gran ayuda en las investigaciones. Como contrapartida, su aplicación conlleva un minucioso proceso que debe ser seguido rigurosamente, para poder validar la fiabilidad de las conclusiones arrojadas por los estudios. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo describir este proceso aplicado en un caso relacionado con el comportamiento del consumidor, especialmente en el estudio de los factores que favorecen la fidelidad entre los usuarios de Facebook. Se diseñó un estudio descriptivo, incluyendo un cuestionario auto-administrado alojado en un sitio web a una muestra de 371 usuarios mayores de 18 años que acceden a Facebook al menos una vez al mes, los datos fueron recopilados y analizados aplicando la metodología de ecuaciones estructurales para el contraste del modelo. Como resultado se pudo refrendar 13 de las 15 hipótesis propuestas, lo cual permitió conocer algunos de los factores que favorecen la lealtad de los usuarios de Facebook, contribuyendo además a verificar la adecuación de los modelos de ecuaciones estructurales como metodología principal en las investigaciones en el área de las ciencias sociales.

21. What Leads People to Keep on E-Learning? An Empirical Analysis of Users' Experiences and Their Effects on Continuance Intention

Abstract

User retention is a major goal for higher education institutions running their teaching and learning programmes online. This is the first investigation into how the senses of presence and flow, together with perceptions about two central elements of the virtual education environment (didactic resource quality and instructor attitude), facilitate the user's intention to continue e-learning. We use data collected from a large sample survey of current users in a pure e-learning environment along with objective data about their performance. The results provide support to the theoretical model. The paper further offers practical suggestions for institutions and instructors who aim to provide effective e-learning experiences.

[spa] La fragmentación internacional de la producción es un elemento característico de la profunda transformación experimentada por la economía mundial en las décadas recientes. Este proceso de creciente desintegración productiva está estrechamente relacionado con un cambio tecnológico digital que abre una nueva etapa de globalización económica. En este contexto, comprender las diferencias en las pautas distributivas y de especialización entre las economías emergentes y las más avanzadas que participan en las cadenas globales de valor se convierte en objeto de estudio relevante. A partir de la información proporcionada por el proyecto WIOD se ha analizado la evolución del valor añadido generado, el comportamiento de la productividad, la formación de capital y su impacto en el nivel y la estructura del empleo. Los resultados obtenidos nos muestran como la aceleración del progreso tecnológico ha inducido una sensible modificación de las tecnologías de producción, cambios de liderazgo en la capacidad de generación y retención de valor añadido, un protagonismo creciente de las rentas de capital y una asimetría en las oportunidades de empleo y la estructura salarial en función de la cualificación laboral. This process of growing productive disintegration is closely related to a digital technological change which is opening a new stage for economic globalization. In this context, it is highly relevant to understand the differences in the distribution and specialization patterns between emerging economies and the most advanced countries that become part of global value chains. From the information provided by the WIOD project, we have analyzed the evolution of added value, labour productivity, capital intensity and the level and composition of employment. The results show how the acceleration of technological progress has induced a sensitive modification of production technologies, changes in the capacity to domestically create and retain incomes, a growing role of capital earnings and an outstanding asymmetry in the opportunities of employment, according to labour qualification.
