Abstract

Regulatory frameworks for the use of AI are emerging. However, they trail behind the fast-evolving malicious AI technologies that can quickly cause lasting societal damage. In response, we introduce a pioneering Assistive AI framework designed to enhance human decision-making capabilities. This framework aims to establish a trust network across various fields, especially within legal contexts, serving as a proactive complement to ongoing regulatory efforts. Central to our framework are the principles of privacy, accountability, and credibility. In our methodology, the foundation of reliability of information and information sources is built upon the ability to uphold accountability, enhance security, and protect privacy. This approach supports, filters, and potentially guides communication, thereby empowering individuals and communities to make well-informed decisions based on cutting-edge advancements in AI. Our framework uses the concept of Boards as proxies to collectively ensure that AI-assisted decisions are reliable, accountable, and in alignment with societal values and legal standards. Through a detailed exploration of our framework, including its main components, operations, and sample use cases, the paper shows how AI can assist in the complex process of decision-making while maintaining human oversight. The proposed framework not only extends regulatory landscapes but also highlights the synergy between AI technology and human judgement, underscoring the potential of AI to serve as a vital instrument in discerning reality from fiction and thus enhancing the decision-making process. The volume contains the critical responses from the perspective of other legal systems to the propositions Helmut Koziol puts forward in 2012 in his book “Basic Questions of Tort Law from a Germanic Perspective”. These reports not only describe the legal situation in selected legal systems, but also give a critical response to the propositions developed in respect of the Germanic legal family. Moreover, they consider the possible incorporation or rejection of the said propositions into the legal systems. This study is not only intended to promote mutual understanding between the individual legal systems but also to provide a basis for them to gradually grow together by means of both the internal development of the national legal systems and supranational elaboration of bodies of rules. Abstract

Quantum confinement of graphene carriers is an effective way to engineer its properties. It is commonly realized through physical edges that are associated with the deterioration of mobility and strong suppression of plasmon resonances. Here, we demonstrate a simple, large-area, edge-free nanostructuring technique, based on amplifying random nanoscale structural corrugations to a level where they efficiently confine carriers, without inducing significant inter-valley scattering. This soft confinement, allows the low-loss lateral ultra-confinement of graphene plasmons, scaling up their resonance frequency from native terahertz to commercially relevant visible range. Visible graphene plasmons localized into nanocorrugations mediate several orders of magnitude stronger light-matter interactions (Raman enhancement) than those previously achieved with graphene, enabling the detection of specific molecules from femtomolar solutions or ambient air. Moreover, nanocorrugated graphene sheets also support propagating visible plasmon modes revealed by scanning near-field optical microscopy observation of their interference patterns.

Abstract

We have introduced a novel solvent-based method to roughen polymer surfaces and characterized treated polypropylene (PP). The method consists of three main steps: solvent treatment, drying, and peeling. We investigated the effects of process parameters such as time of immersion in the solvent, solvent temperature, and drying temperature on the surface morphology created. The structure formed on the surface is mainly influenced by solvent temperature and drying temperature. We also characterized the wetting behavior of the surfaces. The patterned surfaces exhibit superhydrophobic characteristics with a high water contact angle (CA) (>155 [degrees]) and low water contact hysteresis (160[degrees]) and tailor spherulite sizes. The method is simple and scalable, therefore this superhydrophobic material is easy to mass-produce. Abstract

Mechanical properties and crystalline structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) types were studied using polymers, which were polymerized differently in order to obtain diverse molecular architectures. The objective of this work is to describe quantitative correlation between the crystalline structure and the elastic modulus in order to predict structures with expectably advantageous properties. The molecular mass was measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and the regularity of molecular structure was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and stepwise isothermal segregation technique (SIST). The chain regularity of the studied samples is varying in a wide range according to the results of SIST and FTIR measurements. The crystalline structure was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The tensile properties were determined by standardized tensile tests. The results indicate clearly that the increased chain regularity is accompanied by a proportional advancement in crystallinity and consequently proportionally larger stiffness. Moreover, the results of this work were compared to those obtained on other previously produced iPP samples and it can be established that the correlations found during this work are valid generally. An empirical model was developed also, which connects the stiffness to the structural parameters of iPP and makes possible the design and prediction of materials with targeted molecular structure and properties.

Ion beam induced mixing (IBM) can be used for making protecting coating layers at room temperature. We have studied the production of tungsten-carbide, having high strength and low friction, by IBM since this material is also a candidate for protective coatings. WC rich layers have been produced by irradiating C/W multilayer of various structures (with individual layer thicknesses from 10 to 20 nm) by noble gases using medium energy projectiles. The resulting alterations of the samples have been measured by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth-profiling. TRIDYN simulations, with some parametrization, were applied to determine the elemental in-depth distribution after IBM; the compound formation was calculated by a simple model. The calculated and measured depth profiles were compared and excellent agreement has been found for a rich dataset differing in layer structures, projectiles, ion fluences and energies. The good agreement in a wide parameter range validates our procedure and allows the design of the WC-rich layers and also enables the significant decrease of the experimental work.
