Gliomas are the most prevalent primary malignant brain tumors worldwide, with glioblastoma (GBM) being the most common and aggressive type. The standard therapy for GBM has remained unchanged for nearly two decades, with no significant improvement in survival outcomes. Despite several barriers such as the tumor microenvironment (TME) and blood–brain barrier, immunotherapies bring new hope for the treatment of GBM. To better understand the development and progress of immunotherapies in GBM, we made this scientometric analysis of this field. A total of 3753 documents were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection, with publication years ranging from 1999 to 2022. The Web of Science platform, CiteSpace, and VOS viewer were used to conduct the scientometric analysis. The results of scientometric analysis showed that this field has recently become a popular topic of interest. The United States had the most publications among 89 countries or regions. Keyword analysis indicated significant areas in the field of immunotherapies for GBM, especially TME, immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs), chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells, vaccines, and oncolytic viruses (OVs). Overall, we hope that this scientometric analysis can provide insights for researchers and promote the development of this field.

Abstract Background This study aims to evaluate the impact of a home-based, post-discharge early intervention (EI) program on reducing parental stress levels in families with preterm infants born between 28+ 0 and 31+ 6 weeks gestational age. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted, with families randomly allocated to either the EI or standard care (SC) group. A term reference group was also recruited for comparison. The Parental Stress Index-Short Form was used to assess parental stress levels, yielding a total stress score and three subdomain scores. Assessment was performed at baseline, at the 60-day mark of the study, and when the infants reached six corrected months of age. Parents in the reference group were assessed only at six months of corrected age for infants. The intervention comprised three sections: intellectual, physical, and social training, which was administered to the infants in the EI group immediately after discharge and to those in the SC group after 60 days of enrollment. Results Seventy-three families were enrolled in this study, with 37 allocated to the EI group, and 36 to the SC group. Prior to intervention, higher stress levels were reported by mothers in both groups than fathers, with no difference observed between the EI and SC groups. Abstract Background The spatiotemporal epidemiological evidence supporting joint endoscopic screening for esophageal cancer (EC) and gastric cancer (GC) remains limited. This study aims to identify combined high-risk regions for EC and GC and determine optimal areas for joint and separate endoscopic screening. Methods We analyzed the association of incidence trends between EC and GC in cancer registry areas across China from 2006 to 2016 using spatiotemporal statistical methods. Based on these analyses, we divided different combined risk regions for EC and GC to implement joint endoscopic screening. Results From 2006 to 2016, national incidence trends for both EC and GC showed a decline, with an average annual percentage change of -3.15 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -5.33 to -0.92) for EC and -3.78 (95% CI: -4.98 to -2.56) for GC. A grey comprehensive correlation analysis revealed a strong temporal association between the incidence trends of EC and GC, with correlations of 79.00% (95% CI: 77.85 to 80.14) in males and 77.62% (95% CI: 76.50 to 78.73) in females. Geographic patterns of EC and GC varied, demonstrating both homogeneity and heterogeneity across different regions. The cancer registry areas were classified into seven distinct combined risk regions, with 33 areas identified as high-risk for both EC and GC, highlighting these regions as priorities for joint endoscopic screening. Conclusion This study demonstrates a significant spatiotemporal association between EC and GC. The identified combined risk regions provide a valuable basis for optimizing joint endoscopic screening strategies for these cancers.

Abstract Background Ulcerative colitis (UC) is defined by persistent inflammatory processes within the gastrointestinal tract of uncertain etiology. Current therapeutic approaches are limited in their ability to address oxidative stress, inflammation, barrier function restoration, and modulation of gut microbiota in a coordinated manner to maintain intestinal homeostasis. Results This study involves the construction of a metal-phenolic nanozyme (Cur-Fe) through a ferric ion-mediated oxidative coupling of curcumin. Cur-Fe nanozyme exhibits superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like and •OH scavenging activities, demonstrating significant anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties for maintaining intracellular redox balance in vitro. Drawing inspiration from Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN), a biomimetic Cur-Fe nanozyme (CF@EM) is subsequently developed by integrating Cur-Fe into the EcN membrane (EM) to improve the in vivo targeting ability and therapeutic effectiveness of the Cur-Fe nanozyme. When orally administered, CF@EM demonstrates a strong ability to colonize the inflamed colon and restore intestinal redox balance and barrier function in DSS-induced colitis models. Importantly, CF@EM influences the gut microbiome towards a beneficial state by enhancing bacterial diversity and shifting the compositional structure toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype. Furthermore, analysis of intestinal microbial metabolites supports the notion that the therapeutic efficacy of CF@EM is closely associated with bile acid metabolism. Conclusion Inspired by gut microbes, we have successfully synthesized a biomimetic Cur-Fe nanozyme with the ability to inhibit inflammation and restore intestinal homeostasis. Collectively, without appreciable systemic toxicity, this work provides an unprecedented opportunity for targeted oral nanomedicine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

To improve the comprehensive utilization value of the by-product residue of Pueraria thomsonii (kudzu), the extraction of conjugated phenolics from two common by-product residues (kudzu peel and kudzu dregs) was optimized. Infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to compare the microstructure of the by-products of kudzu before and after extraction. The composition of the conjugated phenolics was characterized by LC-MS and the antioxidant activity of the two by-product residues was determined. The results showed that the optimal extraction conditions for the conjugated phenolics in the by-product kudzu dregs were as follows: Liquid to material ratio of 30:1 mL/g, hydrolysis time of NaOH solution of 4 h, and concentration of NaOH solution of 3 mol/L, and the yield of conjugated phenolics under these conditions was 2.54±0.070 mg/g. Accordingly, the optimal extraction conditions for conjugated phenolics in the by-product kudzu bark were 40:1 mL/g liquid/feed ratio, 5 h hydrolysis time in NaOH solution, and 3 mol/L concentration of NaOH solution, and the yield of conjugated phenolics under these conditions was 5.087±0.155 mg/g. The ester bond between phenolics and cellulose in the by-products, and the overall fiber structure was broken, which effectively facilitated the release of conjugated phenolics. The composition and content of conjugated phenolics in the two by-product residues differed greatly, with phenolic acids and flavonoids dominating the conjugated phenolics in kudzu peel, while flavonoids dominated the conjugated phenolics in kudzu dregs. The conjugated phenolics in both kudzu peel and kudzu dregs had strong antioxidant activity, and the antioxidant capacity of conjugated phenolics in kudzu peel was found better than that of kudzu dregs. In conclusion, the by-product residues of kudzu are rich in conjugated phenolics and have significant antioxidant activity, which is of good value for development and utilization.

Abstract Background Postharvest quality deterioration poses a significant challenge to the commercial value of fresh lotus seeds. Low temperature storage is widely employed as the primary method for preserving postharvest lotus seeds during storage and transportation. Results This approach effectively extends the storage life of lotus seeds, resulting in distinct physiological changes compared to room temperature storage, including a notable reduction in starch, protein, H2O2, and MDA content. Here, we conducted RNA-sequencing to generate global transcriptome profiles of postharvest lotus seeds stored under room or low temperature conditions. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that gene expression in postharvest lotus seeds demonstrated less variability during low temperature storage in comparison to room temperature storage. A total of 14,547 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with various biological processes such as starch and sucrose metabolism, energy metabolism, and plant hormone signaling response were identified. Notably, the expression levels of DEGs involved in ABA signaling were significantly suppressed in contrast to room temperature storage. Additionally, nine weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA)-based gene molecular modules were identified, providing insights into the co-expression relationship of genes during postharvest storage. Conclusion Our findings illuminate transcriptional differences in postharvest lotus seeds between room and low temperature storage, offering crucial insights into the molecular mechanisms of low temperature preservation in lotus seeds.

Abstract The combination of anti-angiogenic treatment and immunotherapy presents a promising strategy against colon cancer. Interleukin-17F (IL-17F) emerges as a critical immune cell cytokine expressed in colonic epithelial cells, demonstrating potential in inhibiting angiogenesis. In order to clarify the roles of IL-17F in the colon cancer microenvironment and elucidate its mechanism, we established a mouse colon carcinoma cell line CT26 overexpressing IL-17F and transplanted it subcutaneously into syngeneic BALB/c mice. We also analyzed induced colon tumor in IL-17F knockout and wild type mice. Our results demonstrated that IL-17F could suppress colon tumor growth in vivo with inhibited angiogenesis and enhanced recruitment of cysteine-cysteine motif chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6) positive immune cells. Additionally, IL-17F suppressed the tube formation, cell growth and migration of endothelial cells EOMA in vitro. Comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of transcriptome profiles between EOMA cells and those treated with three different concentrations of IL-17F identified 109 differentially expressed genes. Notably, a potential new target, Caspase 4, showed increased expressions after IL-17F treatment in endothelial cells. Further molecular validation revealed a novel downstream signaling for IL-17F: IL-17F enhanced Caspase 4/GSDMD signaling of endothelial cells, CT26 cells and CT26 transplanted tumors, while IL-17F knockout colon tumors exhibited decreased Caspase 4/GSDMD signaling. The heightened expression of the GSDMD N-terminus, coupled with increased cellular propidium iodide (PI) uptake and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, revealed that IL-17F promoted pyroptosis of endothelial cells. Altogether, IL-17F could modulate the colon tumor microenvironment with inhibited angiogenesis, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic target for colon cancer.

Abstract Background To evaluate the role of metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) in the prognosis of severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. Methods According to the median MALAT1 value of 3.2 at baseline, 93 pediatric patients with severe CAP were divided into low (n = 46, median MALAT1 level = 1.9) or high (n = 47, median MALAT1 level = 4.5) MALAT1 groups. Another 93 age-, gender-, and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy individuals were included in the control group using the propensity-score matching (PSM) method. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model was used to explore the association of MALAT1 level with the 28-day mortality after controlling for potential confounding factors. Abstract Background Developmental dyslexia, a complex neurodevelopmental disorder, not only affects children’s academic performance but is also associated with increased healthcare costs, lower employment rates, and reduced productivity. The pathogenesis of dyslexia remains unclear and it is generally considered to be caused by the overlap of genetic and environmental factors. Systematically exploring the close relationship between exposure to environmental compounds and susceptibility genes in the development of dyslexia is currently lacking but high necessary. Methods In this study, we systematically compiled 131 publicly reported susceptibility genes for dyslexia sourced from DisGeNET, OMIM, and GeneCards databases. Comparative Toxicogenomics Database database was used to explore the overlap between susceptibility genes and 95 environmental compounds, including metals, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pesticides. Chemical bias towards the dyslexia risk genes was taken into account in the observation/expectation ratios > 1 and the corresponding P value obtained by hypergeometric probability test. Results Our study found that the number of dyslexia risk genes targeted by each chemical varied from 1 to 109. A total of 35 chemicals were involved in chemical reactions with dyslexia-associated genes, with significant enrichment values (observed/expected dyslexia risk genes) ranging from 1.147 (Atrazine) to 66.901 (Dibenzo(a, h)pyrene). Conclusion The results indicated that dyslexia-associated genes were implicated in certain chemical reactions. However, these findings are exploratory, and further research involving animal or cellular experiments is needed.

Abstract Rice false smut caused by Ustilaginoidea virens has become one of the most important diseases of rice. Mycoviruses are viruses that can infect fungi with the potential to control fungal diseases. However, little is known about the biocontrol role of hypoviruses in U. virens. In this study, we revealed that the hypovirulence-associated U. virens strain Uv325 was co-infected by four novel mycoviruses from three lineages, designated Ustilaginoidea virens RNA virus 16 (UvRV16), Ustilaginoidea virens botourmiavirus virus 8 (UvBV8), Ustilaginoidea virens botourmiavirus virus 9 (UvBV9), and Ustilaginoidea virens narnavirus virus 13 (UvNV13), respectively. The U. virens strain co-infected by four mycoviruses showed slower growth rates, reduced conidial yield, and attenuated pigmentation. We demonstrated that UvRV16 was not only the major factor responsible for the hypovirulent phenotype in U. vriens, but also able to prevent U. virens to accumulate more mycotoxin, thereby weakening the inhibitory effects on rice seed germination and seedling growth. Additionally, we indicated that UvRV16 can disrupt the antiviral response of U. virens by suppressing the transcriptional expression of multiple genes involved in autophagy and RNA silencing. In conclusion, our study provided new insights into the biological control of rice false smut.

Phenolics have various of physiological effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and improving intestinal health, as well as playing an important role in the growth of plant and the regulation of human health. Compared with the free phenolics that can be directly extracted, the conjugated phenolics that are bound to polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and other components have a higher proportion and a wider distribution. The conjugated phenolics have potential application value and increasing attention. During the entire chain from plant growth to food processing and then to human digestion and utilisation, the conjugated phenolics undergo complex changes in composition, structure, migration transformation, and storage characteristics due to the influence of many factors. The study of its accumulation and release patterns is particularly important to enhance its biological activity and improve the utilisation rate of phenolics. Therefore, this paper provides a brief overview on the release of conjugated phenolics during plant growth, food processing, and human digestion, with a view to providing theoretical guidance for elucidating the release pattern of bound phenolics and improving their utilisation.

Abstract Keratoconus, a disorder characterized by corneal thinning and weakening, results in vision loss. Corneal crosslinking (CXL) can halt the progression of keratoconus. The development of accelerated corneal crosslinking (A-CXL) protocols to shorten the treatment time has been hampered by the rapid depletion of stromal oxygen when higher UVA intensities are used, resulting in a reduced cross-linking effect. It is therefore imperative to develop better methods to increase the oxygen concentration within the corneal stroma during the A-CXL process. Photocatalytic oxygen-generating nanomaterials are promising candidates to solve the hypoxia problem during A-CXL. Biocompatible graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) quantum dots (QDs)-based oxygen self-sufficient platforms including g-C3N4 QDs and riboflavin/g-C3N4 QDs composites (RF@g-C3N4 QDs) have been developed in this study. Both display excellent photocatalytic oxygen generation ability, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield, and excellent biosafety. More importantly, the A-CXL effect of the g-C3N4 QDs or RF@g-C3N4 QDs composite on male New Zealand white rabbits is better than that of the riboflavin 5’-phosphate sodium (RF) A-CXL protocol under the same conditions, indicating excellent strengthening of the cornea after A-CXL treatments. These lead us to suggest the potential application of g-C3N4 QDs in A-CXL for corneal ectasias and other corneal diseases.

Existing tracking algorithms mostly rely on model-driven approaches, which can be prone to inaccuracies due to unpredictable human behaviours. This article aims to address the issue of transient errors in tracking port container trucks (PCTrucks) when encountering obstructions. A data-driven algorithm for predicting vehicle trajectories is proposed in this study. The approach involves preprocessing an extensive dataset of GPS information, training a DeepLSTM-Attention model, and integrating the proposed model with the population-based training (PBT) algorithm to optimise network hyperparameters. The objective is to enhance the accuracy of predicting trajectories for vehicles moving horizontally. The trajectory data used are collected from real-world port operations. This research is conducted across nine trajectory segments and benchmarked against traditional approaches like Kalman filtering, machine learning techniques such as support vector regression (SVR) and standard long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. The results demonstrate that the proposed prediction method, that is, DeepPBM-Attention, outperforms other techniques in several evaluation metrics, including root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), F1 score and trajectory reconstruction error (TRE). Compared to LSTM networks, the performance of DeepPBM-Attention is improved by approximately 40%. The proposed data-driven trajectory prediction algorithm exhibits high accuracy and practicality, which can effectively be applied to the positioning prediction of horizontally moving vehicles in port environments.

Abstract Background The optimal timing of performing ICSI on immature oocytes for POSEIDON patients is still unknown to get better early embryonic development outcomes. The purpose of this study was to implore the most appropriate time to carry out ICSI on in vitro maturation GV and MI oocytes for POSEIDON patients. Methods Two hundred thirty-nine immature oocytes from 163 POSEIDON patients were prospectively performed ICSI at different timings: P-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes 4–6 h after the first polar body extrusion, N = 81), R-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes less than 4 h after the first polar body extrusion, N = 80), and E-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes the next day after oocytes retrieval, N = 78). Fertilization and embryonic development outcomes were collected and statistically analyzed. Mitochondria distribution of cytoplasm of in vitro matured oocytes with different time cultures after the first polar body (PB1) extrusion was stained. Results Compared to the E-ICSI group, more day 3 embryos from P-ICSI became blastocysts after sequential culture though without statistical significance (OR = 3.71, 95% CI: 0.94—14.63, P = 0.061). Compared to the E-ICSI group, more embryos from both P-ICSI and R-ICSI groups were clinically used with statistical significance (OR = 5.67, 95% CI: 2.24—14.35, P = 0.000 for P-ICSI embryos; OR = 3.23, 95% CI: 1.23—8.45, P = 0.017 for R-ICSI embryos). Compared to the E-ICSI group, transferred embryos from P-ICSI and R-ICSI had a higher implantation rate though without statistical significance (35.3% for P-ICSI embryos; 9.1% or R-ICSI embryos and 0% for E-ICSI embryos, P = 0.050). Among the three group, there were most healthy babies delivered from the P-ICSI group (5, 1 and 0 for P-ICSI, R-ICSI and E-ICSI respectively). The mitochondria in the cytoplasm of in vitro matured oocytes with a less than 4 h and 4–6 h culture after PB1 extrusion presented semiperipheral and diffused distribution patterns, respectively. Conclusions Our results revealed P-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes 4–6 h after the first polar body extrusion) provided the most efficient method to utilize the immaturation oocytes basing on embryos utilization and live birth outcome for low prognosis patients under the POSEIDON classification. The mitochondria distribution of the in vitro matured oocytes’ cytoplasm from P-ICSI varied that from R-ICSI.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by chronic inflammatory processes of the intestinal tract of unknown origin. Current treatments lack understanding on how to effectively alleviate oxidative stress, relieve inflammation, as well as modulate gut microbiota for maintaining intestinal homeostasis synchronously. In this study, a novel drug delivery system based on a metal polyphenol network (MPN) was constructed via metal coordination between epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and Fe3+. Curcumin (Cur), an active polyphenolic compound, with distinguished anti-inflammatory activity was assembled and encapsulated into MPN to generate Cur-MPN. The obtained Cur-MPN could serve as a robust reactive oxygen species modulator by efficiently scavenging superoxide radical (O2•-) as well as hydroxyl radical (·OH). By hitchhiking yeast microcapsule (YM), Cur-MPN was then encapsulated into YM to obtain CM@YM. Our findings demonstrated that CM@YM was able to protect Cur-MPN to withstand the harsh gastrointestinal environment and enhance the targeting and retention abilities of the inflamed colon. When administered orally, CM@YM could alleviate DSS-induced colitis with protective and therapeutic effects by scavenging ROS, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and regulating the polarization of macrophages to M1, thus restoring barrier function and maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Importantly, CM@YM also modulated the gut microbiome to a favorable state by improving bacterial diversity and transforming the compositional structure to an anti-inflammatory phenotype as well as increasing the content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) (such as acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid). Collectively, with excellent biocompatibility, our findings indicate that synergistically regulating intestinal microenvironment will be a promising approach for UC.

Abstract Background Neuronal guanine nucleotide exchange factor (NGEF) plays a key role in several cancers; however, its role in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of NGEF as a prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for LUAD. Methods NGEF expression data for multiple cancers and LUAD were downloaded from multiple databases. The high- and low-NGEF expression groups were constructed based on median NGEF expression in LUAD samples, and then performed Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from the two NGEF expression groups were screened and applied to construct a protein-protein interaction network. The primary pathways were obtained using gene set enrichment analysis. The associations between NGEF expression and clinical characteristics, immune infiltration, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), sensitivity to chemotherapy, and tumor mutation burden (TMB) were investigated using R. Levels of NGEF expression in the lung tissue was validated using single-cell RNA sequencing, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), immunohistochemical staining, and western blot analysis. Results The expression of NGEF mRNA was upregulated in multiple cancers. mRNA and protein expression levels of NGEF were higher in patients with LUAD than in controls, as validated using qPCR and western blot. High NGEF expression was an independent prognostic factor for LUAD and was associated with advanced tumor stage, large tumor size, more lymph node metastasis, and worse overall survival (OS). A total of 182 overlapping DEGs were screened between The Cancer Genome Atlas and GSE31210, among which the top 20 hub genes were identified. NGEF expression was mainly enriched in the pathways of apoptosis, cell cycle, and DNA replication. Moreover, elevated NGEF expression were associated with a high fraction of activated memory CD4+ T cells and M0 macrophages; elevated expression levels of the ICIs: programmed cell death 1 and programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 expression; higher TMB; and better sensitivity to bortezomib, docetaxel, paclitaxel, and parthenolide, but less sensitivity to axitinib and metformin. Conclusion NGEF expression is upregulated in LUAD and is significantly associated with tumor stages, OS probability, immune infiltration, immunotherapy response, and chemotherapy response. NGEF may be a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in LUAD.

Abstract Background and Aim The impact of trace elements and heavy metals on human health has attracted widespread attention. However, the correlation between urinary chromium concentrations and blood pressure remains unclear and inadequately reported, and the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between urinary chromium concentrations and blood pressure in adults in the United States (US). Methods We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018 for this study. Multivariate logistic regression and multivariate linear regression were used to explore the association of urinary chromium concentrations with hypertension and blood pressure. Additionally, we also performed subgroup analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCS). Results A total of 2958 participants were enrolled in this study. The overall mean systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were 123.98 ± 0.60, 72.66 ± 0.57 mmHg, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension was found in 41.31% of the whole participants. In the fully adjusted model, we did not observe a correlation between urinary chromium concentrations and the risk of hypertension and systolic blood pressure. However, we found a negative association between urinary chromium concentrations and diastolic blood pressure. In subgroup analysis, we observed a positive association between urinary chromium and the risk of hypertension among participants older than 60 years of age and those who were Non-Hispanic Black. The interaction term highlighted the influence of age and race on this positive association. We also found a negative association of urinary chromium with diastolic blood pressure in male, participants who were current smokers, overweight, and other races, as well as those without alcohol use and anti-hypertensive drug use. However, the interaction term only revealed the influence of alcohol consumption on the negative association. Conclusion Our study suggested that urinary chromium concentrations may show a negative association with diastolic blood pressure and this association was significantly dependent on alcohol consumption. Besides, a positive association between urinary chromium and the risk of hypertension was also found among participants older than 60 years of age and those who were Non-Hispanic Black.

Converting common biomass materials to high-performance biomedical products could not only reduce the environmental pressure associated with the large-scale use of synthetic materials, but also increase the economic value. Chitosan as a very promising candidate has drawn considerable attention owing to its abundant sources and remarkable bioactivities. However, pure chitosan materials usually exhibit insufficient mechanical properties and excessive swelling ratio, which seriously affected their in vivo stability and integrity when applied as tissue engineering scaffolds. Thus, simultaneously improving the mechanical strength and biological compatibility of pure chitosan (CS) scaffolds becomes very important. Here, inspired by the fiber-reinforced construction of natural extracellular matrix and the porous structure of cancellous bone, we built silk microfibers/chitosan composite scaffolds via ice-templating technique. This biomimetic strategy achieved 500% of mechanical improvement to pure chitosan, and meanwhile still maintaining high porosity (> 87%). In addition, the increased roughness of chitosan pore walls by embedded silk microfibers significantly promoted cell adhesion and proliferation. More importantly, after subcutaneous implantation in mice for four weeks, the composite scaffold showed greater structural integrity, as well as better collagenation, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis abilities, suggesting its great potential in biomedicine.

Summary: Phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) regulates key plant development and environmental stress responses. The ubiquitin-proteasome system tightly controls ABA signaling. CULLIN4-RING (CRL4) E3 ubiquitin ligases use the substrate receptor module CONSTITUTIVELY PHOTOMORPHOGENIC1 (COP10)-DDB1-DET1-DDA1 (CDDD) to target Arabidopsis ABA receptor PYL8, acting as negative regulators of ABA responses. Conversely, ABA treatment attenuates PYL8 receptor degradation, although the molecular mechanism remained elusive. Here, we show that ABA promotes the disruption of CRL4-CDDD complexes, leading to PYL8 stabilization. ABA-mediated CRL4-CDDD dissociation likely involves an altered association between DDA1-containing complexes and the COP9 signalosome (CSN), a master regulator of the assembly of cullin-based E3 ligases, including CRL4-CDDD. Indeed, treatment with CSN inhibitor CSN5i-3 suppresses the ABA effect on CRL4-CDDD assembly. Our findings indicate that ABA stabilizes PYL8 by altering the dynamics of the CRL4-CDDD-CSN complex association, showing a regulatory mechanism by which a plant hormone inhibits an E3 ubiquitin ligase to protect its own receptors from degradation.

Recently, it has been discovered surprisingly that tRNA can be cleaved into specific small fragments under certain conditions. Most importantly, these tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) participate in the regulation of gene expression, playing pivotal roles in various physiological and pathological processes and thus attracting widespread attention. Detecting tRF expression in tissues and cells often involves using tRF-specific stem-loop primers for reverse transcription. However, the high specificity offered by this method limits it to transcribing only one specific tRF sequence per reaction, necessitating separate reverse transcription and qPCR steps for multiple tRFs, leading to substantially increased time and resource consumption. This becomes especially challenging in precious samples with limited RNA availability. To address these issues, there is an urgent need for a universal and cost-effective tRF identification method. This study introduces a versatile tRF detection approach based on the uniform polyadenylation of all tRFs, allowing reverse transcription with a universal oligo(dT) primer. This method enables simultaneous reverse transcription of all target tRFs in one reaction, greatly facilitating subsequent qPCR analysis. Furthermore, it demonstrates exceptional sensitivity and specificity, offering significant value in tRF-related research.

In this work, sustainable cement clinkers and ecofriendly cementitious materials (ECMs) were prepared with iron ore tailings (IOTs). Alternative raw meals with IOTs were sintered to cement clinkers by conventional sintering processes. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical tests suggested that the cement clinker within 10 wt% IOTs had better quality than those without IOTs. In addition, the hydration and hydration products of the IOT-based cement were analyzed via XRD and SEM. Before preparing ECMs, IOTs were pretreated with a 100 mesh Tyler screen to remove silt and clay. Then, the pretreated IOTs and whole IOTs partly instead of fine aggregates, together with IOT-based cement were used to produce ECMs. The ratio of water-binder and compressive strength properties of the ECMs were investigated. It is suggested that the pretreated IOTs sand can be used as much as 60 wt%, while the amount of whole IOTs sand must be limited to 20 wt% before the performance dramatically decrease. These findings suggest that disposal of a high volume of Yeshan IOTs in sustainable construction building materials has feasibility and operational significance.

Objective: To systematically identify and quantify the incidence and risk factors of postoperative urinary incontinence (UI) in holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), aiming to provide a basis for intervention strategies. Methods: Relevant studies on postoperative UI in HoLEP were searched in databases including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBase, CNKI, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, VIP and CBMdisc, with the search period up to April 2024. Titles, abstracts and full texts were screened using the Endnote application. Studies meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria underwent quality assessment and data extraction. The incidence of postoperative UI and/or adjusted or unadjusted odds ratios (OR), relative risks or ratios were recorded, and analysis was conducted using Stata 15.0 software. Results: A total of 17 studies encompassing 7939 patients were included. The pooled incidence of UI after HoLEP was 1.12, 95% CI (1.11–1.13); the 3-month postoperative incidence was 1.06, 95% CI (1.05–1.06); the 6-month postoperative incidence was 1.04, 95% CI (1.03–1.05); the 12-month postoperative incidence was 1.05, 95% CI (1.03–1.06); and the incidence of permanent UI after HoLEP was 1.01, 95% CI (1.00–1.01). The occurrence of UI after HoLEP exhibited a time-dependent variation. The risk factors for UI after HoLEP included the following: age (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01–1.06); body mass index (BMI; OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01–1.20); prostate volume (OR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.39–2.27); prostate-specific antigen (PSA) (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.87–0.92); International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.83–1.07). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate a decreasing trend in the incidence of postoperative UI after HoLEP over time, with a time-dependent change. Age, BMI, prostate volume, PSA and IPSS are risk factors for postoperative UI after HoLEP. Age and prostate volume have a significant impact on UI. Therefore, preoperative assessment and intervention for these factors are crucial in reducing the occurrence of postoperative UI in HoLEP.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) incidence and mortality rates are rising, necessitating precise prognostic tools to guide personalized treatment. Dysregulation of programmed cell death pathways in tumor suppression and cancer development has garnered increasing attention, providing a new research direction for identifying biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets. Methods: Integrating multiple database resources, we constructed and optimized a prognostic signature based on the expression of programmed cell death-related genes (PCDRG) using ten machine learning algorithms. Model performance and prognostic effects were further evaluated. We analyzed the relationships between signature and clinicopathological features, somatic mutations, drug sensitivity, and the tumor immune microenvironment, and constructed a nomogram. The expression level of PCDRGs were evaluated and compared. Results: Of 1560 PCDRGs, 149 were differentially expressed in PCa, with 34 associated with biochemical recurrence. The PCDRG-derived index (PCDI), constructed using the random forest algorithm, exhibited optimal prognostic performance, successfully stratifying PCa patients into two groups with significant prognostic differences. Patients with high PCDI scores exhibited poorer survival and lower immunotherapy benefit. PCDI was closely associated with the infiltration of specific immune cells, particularly positive correlations with macrophages and T helper cells, and negative correlations with neutrophils, suggesting that PCDI may influence the tumor immune microenvironment, thereby affecting patient prognosis and treatment response. PCDI was associated with age, pathological stage, somatic mutations, and drug sensitivity. The PCDI-based nomogram demonstrated excellent performance in predicting biochemical recurrence in PCa patients. Finally, the differential expression of these PCDRGs was verified based on cell lines and PCa patient expression profile data. Conclusion: This study developed an effective prognostic indicator for prostate cancer, PCDI, using machine learning approaches. PCDI reflects the link between aberrant programmed cell death pathways and disease progression and treatment response.

ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate the contribution of the double-track human resource management model to the job performance and mental health of frontline police within China’s public security organs.MethodologyAn individual-centered approach, latent profile analysis (LPA), was utilized in this study, which used cluster sampling to survey all police of all 118 frontline police stations in an economically underdeveloped area of China and 839 personnel were selected for the analysis. This method allowed for a detailed examination of the contribution of the double-track system to job performance and mental health.Findings and conclusionThe study identified three subtypes of job burnout among Chinese police: low job burnout, medium job burnout, and emotional exhaustion type. The double-track human resource management model in China’s public security organs has contributed to significant disparities between civilian and auxiliary police, such as more severe job burnout among civilian police, lower job performance, and mental health among auxiliary police.ImplicationsTo mitigate the potential risks associated with the double-track human resource management model, adjustments are necessary for both the management system and the treatment distribution system, which would also help address the disparities and improve the overall wellbeing and performance of all police officers.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are universally distributed in soils, including saline soils, and can form mycorrhizal symbiosis with the vast majority of higher plants. This symbiosis can reduce soil salinity and influence plant growth and development by improving nutrient uptake, increasing plant antioxidant enzyme activity, and regulating hormone levels. In this study, rhizosphere soil from eight plants in the Songnen saline–alkaline grassland was used to isolate, characterize, and screen the indigenous advantageous AMF. The promoting effect of AMF on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) under salt treatment was also investigated. The findings showed that 40 species of AMF in six genera were identified by high-throughput sequencing. Glomus mosseae (G.m) and Glomus etunicatum (G.e) are the dominant species in saline ecosystems of northern China. Alfalfa inoculated with Glomus mosseae and Glomus etunicatum under different salt concentrations could be infested and form a symbiotic system. The mycorrhizal colonization rate and mycorrhizal dependence of G.m inoculation were significantly higher than those of G.e inoculation. With increasing salt concentration, inoculation increased alfalfa plant height, fresh weight, chlorophyll content, proline (Pro), soluble sugar (SS), soluble protein (SP), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activity while decreasing the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide anion production rate. The results highlight that inoculation with G.m and G.e effectively alleviated salinity stress, with G.m inoculation having a significant influence on salt resistance in alfalfa. AMF might play a key role in alfalfa growth and survival under harsh salt conditions.

Abstract Funduscopic diseases, including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age‐related macular degeneration (AMD), significantly impact global visual health, leading to impaired vision and irreversible blindness. Delivering drugs to the posterior segment of the eye remains a challenge due to the presence of multiple physiological and anatomical barriers. Conventional drug delivery methods often prove ineffective and may cause side effects. Nanomaterials, characterized by their small size, large surface area, tunable properties, and biocompatibility, enhance the permeability, stability, and targeting of drugs. Ocular nanomaterials encompass a wide range, including lipid nanomaterials, polymer nanomaterials, metal nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, quantum dot nanomaterials, and so on. These innovative materials, often combined with hydrogels and exosomes, are engineered to address multiple mechanisms, including macrophage polarization, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and anti‐vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Compared to conventional modalities, nanomedicines achieve regulated and sustained delivery, reduced administration frequency, prolonged drug action, and minimized side effects. This study delves into the obstacles encountered in drug delivery to the posterior segment and highlights the progress facilitated by nanomedicine. Prospectively, these findings pave the way for next‐generation ocular drug delivery systems and deeper clinical research, aiming to refine treatments, alleviate the burden on patients, and ultimately improve visual health globally.

Background: Fructus cannabis (Hemp seed), the dried and mature fruit of Cannabis sativa L., was reported to have effects against Alzheimer's disease (AD) in different experimental models. However, either chemical composition or mechanisms of action was not clear. Our previous work isolated and identified diverse phenylpropionamides such as cannabisin A-F, caffeoyltyramine and feryroyltyramine from hemp seed, which showed antioxidant and anti-neuroinflammatory activity in cell models. Purpose: To study the anti-AD effect and mechanism of the total phenylpropionamides (TPA) extract from hemp seed using APPswe/PS1dE9 mice model. Methods: TPA extract was prepared via extraction and column chromatography techniques, then analyzed and measured using HPLC, HPLC-MS and Folin-Ciocalteu method. The extract was administered by gavage to APPswe/PS1dE9 mice. The learning memory ability of mice were examined using new object recognition test and Morris water maze. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining was used to observe the morphology of neuronal cells in the hippocampal region of brain tissue; ELISA was used to measure the content of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) in the brain tissue; the deposition of Aβ protein was measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting; the activation of microglia was measured by immunofluorescence. The expression of APP, PS1, SIRT1, and ADAM10 proteins was measured by Western blotting. Results: Folin-Ciocalteu method showed the total phenylpropionamides content was 238.03 μg caffeic acid equivalent /mg TPA. HPLC and HPLC-MS analysis showed the contents of N-trans-caffeoyltyramine, cannabisin A and B were 20.16 μg/mg, 32.16 μg/mg and 214.35 μg/mg, respectively, in TPA extract. TPA treatment significantly increased the survival rate of APP/PS1 mice, improved the learning and memory ability, reversed the neural cell damage in the hippocampal region, and reduced Aβ deposition and activated microglia in brain tissue. Meanwhile, the administration decreased the neuroinflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β expression, increased antioxidant enzyme SOD activity, and attenuated MDA expression. Western blotting showed that TPA administration increased SIRT1 and ADAM10 protein expression and decreased APP and PS1 protein expression. Conclusion: TPA improved learning memory capacity, increased survival rate, attenuated neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, microglia activation and hippocampal apoptosis, and reduced amyloid deposition via the SIRT1-ADAM10 pathway in APP/PS1 mice.

Solemyidae is an ancient group of protobranch bivalves that typically inhabit unusual environments, such as deep-sea chemosynthetic environments, and are symbiotic with chemoautotrophic and gill-hosted bacteria. In May 2018, a living solemyid bivalve was collected using a remotely operated vehicle at a depth of 1,390 m from the Haima cold seep in the northwestern slope of the South China Sea. Through a comprehensive taxonomic approach combining morphological observations and molecular phylogeny reconstruction of concatenated mitochondrial COI,16S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene sequences, a new species, Acharax haimaensis sp. nov. is identified and described. The discovery of this new species contributes to the diversity of known solemyids in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments.

Abstract Background Observational studies have shown that smoking is related to the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) in individuals with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Nevertheless, further investigation is needed to determine the causal effect between these two variables. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the causal relationship between smoking and DLCO in IPF patients using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets from individuals of European descent were analysed. These datasets included published lifetime smoking index (LSI) data for 462,690 participants and DLCO data for 975 IPF patients. The inverse-variance weighting (IVW) method was the main method used in our analysis. Sensitivity analyses were performed by MR‒Egger regression, Cochran’s Q test, the leave-one-out test and the MR-PRESSO global test. Results A genetically predicted increase in LSI was associated with a decrease in DLCO in IPF patients [ORIVW = 0.54; 95% CI 0.32–0.93; P = 0.02]. Conclusions Our study suggested that smoking is associated with a decrease in DLCO. Patients diagnosed with IPF should adopt an active and healthy lifestyle, especially by quitting smoking, which may be effective at slowing the progression of IPF.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Antimicrobial Stewardship 2018 (ASP 18) in China emphasizes the hierarchical control of antimicrobial drugs and the management of physicians’ prescribing authority, especially in children. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of implementation of ASP 2018 on antibiotic consumption, resistance, and treatment outcomes in children with severe pneumonia from bacterial infections. Methods: A single center, retrospective study was conducted on 287 children with severe bacterial pneumonia, including 165 patients before intervention (May 2016–April 2018) and 122 patients after intervention (May 2018–April 2020). The antimicrobial resistance rates, antibiotic consumption, and clinical outcomes of the two periods were compared. Results: After the implementation of ASP 2018, Staphylococcus aureus (17.9%) became the predominant Gram-positive bacterium. The resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to clindamycin, erythromycin, and tetracycline was significantly reduced (P < 0.001), and Staphylococcus aureus to tetracycline also decreased (P = 0.034). In addition, Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.4%) replaced Pseudomonas aeruginosa (9.5%) as the most common Gram-negative bacterium. The resistance rates of Klebsiella pneumoniae to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMC) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT), and Acinetobacter baumannii to cefotaxime and SXT decreased significantly (P < 0.02). Total consumption (DDD/100 patient-days) of five antibiotics (cephalosporins, carbapenems, macrolides, antifungal agents, and linezolid) showed a decreasing trend, and the decrease in antifungal agents and linezolid was the most significant (27.4% and 25.6%, P < 0.001). The isolation rate of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains decreased significantly from the highest, 16.8%, before intervention to 6.7% after intervention (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our data indicate that the implementation of antimicrobial management strategies has significantly reduced the consumption of antibiotics and the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in children with severe bacterial pneumonia in PICU.

Abstract Background Paradoxical embolism is a rare cause of acute arterial occlusion. This phenomenon arises when embolic material travels from the venous system crosses an abnormal shunt such as patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, or pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, into the arterial system. Impending paradoxical embolism refers to the presence of an entrapped thrombus in the patent foramen ovale. Case presentation We report a case of a 68-year-old female patient who presented with an impending paradoxical embolism, alongside both concomitant pulmonary embolism and myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation. Swiftly addressed through emergency cardiac surgery and systemic anticoagulation, the patient’s condition was effectively treated. Conclusions While the ideal treatment strategy for impending paradoxical embolism remains a topic of debate due to limited and inconclusive evidence, emergent open surgery should be contemplated in patients as it signifies a critical clinical emergency.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that exhibits resistant to a majority of commonly used antibiotics. Phages have the potential to serve as an alternative treatment for S. maltophilia infections. In this study, a lytic phage, A1432, infecting S. maltophilia YCR3A-1, was isolated and characterized from a karst cave. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that phage A1432 possesses an icosahedral head and a shorter tail. Phage A1432 demonstrated a narrow host range, with an optimal multiplicity of infection of 0.1. The one-step growth curve indicated a latent time of 10 min, a lysis period of 90 min, a burst size of 43.2 plaque-forming units per cell. In vitro bacteriolytic activity test showed that phage A1432 was capable to inhibit the growth of S. maltophilia YCR3A-1 in an MOI-dependent manner after 2 h of co-culture. BLASTn analysis showed that phage A1432 genome shares the highest similarity (81.46%) with Xanthomonas phage Xoo-sp2 in the NCBI database, while the query coverage was only 37%. The phage contains double-stranded DNA with a genome length of 61,660 bp and a GC content of 61.92%. It is predicted to have 79 open reading frames and one tRNA, with no virulence or antibiotic resistance genes. Phylogenetic analysis using terminase large subunit and DNA polymerase indicated that phage A1432 clustered with members of the Bradleyvirinae subfamily but diverged into a distinct branch. Further phylogenetic comparison analysis using Average Nucleotide Identity, proteomic phylogenetic analysis, genomic network analysis confirmed that phage A1432 belongs to a novel genus within the Bradleyvirinae subfamily, Mesyanzhinovviridae family. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis of the so far isolated S. maltophilia phages revealed significant genetic diversity among these phages. The results of this research will contribute valuable information for further studies on their morphological and genetic diversity, will aid in elucidating the evolutionary mechanisms that give rise to them.

Widely applied across diverse disciplines such as metabolomics, genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, their utility is undeniable. However, the operational complexity has been compounded by the absence of standardized data formats and the need to switch between various platforms for generating different Venn diagrams. To address these challenges, we introduce the EVenn platform, a versatile tool offering a unified interface for efficient data exploration and visualization of diverse Venn diagrams. EVenn (http://www.ehbio.com/test/venn) streamlines the data upload process with a standardized format, enhancing the capabilities for multimodule analysis. This comprehensive protocol outlines various applications of EVenn, featuring representative results of multiple Venn diagrams, data uploads in the centralized data center, and step‐by‐step case demonstrations. Through these functionalities, EVenn emerges as a valuable and user‐friendly tool for the in‐depth exploration of multiomics data.

TBM tunnel surrounding rock classification is a key indicator for supporting decision-making and ensuring safe construction. And predicting the surrounding rock type accurately in advance is of great significance for TBM intelligent construction. This paper established the surrounding rock classification model based on support vector machine (LIBSVM), including preprocesses historical tunneling parameters, extracts data information that can accurately reflect the relationship between rock and machine, analyzes the correlation between different parameters and surrounding rock categories, and obtains highly relevant parameters. Based on the long short-term memory (LSTM), the prediction model of total thrust, cutter head torque, gripper pressure, cutter head rotate speed, and propulsion speed are established, which is the strongly correlated parameters with surrounding rock. Combining the parameter prediction model with the surrounding rock classification algorithm, the LSTM-SVM tunnel surrounding rock classification prediction model is established. The results showed that the coefficient of determination of the total thrust model, the cutter head torque, the gripper pressure, the cutter head speed, and the propulsion speed were 0.9825, 0.9396, 0.9974, 0.9843, and 0.9636. The overall prediction accuracy of the surrounding rock category can reach 86.0686%, which can provide a certain reference for predicting the surrounding rock condition in a short distance.

Waxy maize (Zea mays L. sinensis Kulesh) is highly regarded for its high nutritional content and unique taste. Although the stalks and leaves contain high carbohydrate levels after ear harvesting, inadequate crude protein (CP) limits the utilization and promotion of waxy maize silage in animal husbandry. In this study, waxy maize and fodder soybeans were mixed for sowing in different proportions [1:0 (CK), 1:1 (A1), 1:2 (A2), 1:3 (A3), and 1:4 (A4)] to investigate the effects of different mixing ratios on the growth of the waxy maize, the chemical indices, fermentation quality, and the microbial community of the mixed silage after ear harvesting. The mixed planting of waxy maize and fodder soybeans in different proportions had no effect on the yield and quality of the waxy maize ears and increased the aboveground biomass after ear harvesting. After ear harvesting, the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents significantly decreased, and the CP content and relative feeding value (RFV) gradually increased in the mixed silage. The pH of the treatments was lower than 4.2 except for A4, and the lowest ammonia nitrogen (AN) concentration was observed in A3. With increasing proportions of fodder soybeans, the abundance of beneficial bacteria increased and that of harmful bacteria decreased; Firmicutes and Lactobacillus were the dominant phylum and genus, respectively, and both increased gradually. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the fermentation indices affecting the microbial community composition in the silage were inconsistent among the different mixed sowing combinations. The Mantel test showed that the composition of the microbial communities in the treatments was significantly correlated with the ADF, water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC), and propionic acid (PA) contents. Comprehensive analysis revealed that the optimal mixed sowing ratio of waxy maize to fodder soybeans was 1:3, and waxy maize and fodder soybeans silage can increase the utilization of aboveground biomass and improve the fermentation quality and feeding quality of silage by changing the microbial community. These findings lay a certain theoretical foundation for improving the utilization of waxy maize.

Abstract Carbon fiber composites are emerging as a promising new biomaterial for chest wall reconstruction implants due to their mechanical properties and biocompatibility. This work evaluates the biomechanics of carbon fiber artificial ribs using finite element analysis and clinical implementation. Static simulations of normal breathing process show the maximum stress on the implant is only 2.83 MPa, far below the material ultimate strength of 60 MPa, indicating the excellent fit for maintaining respiratory function. Dynamic collision simulations demonstrate the artificial rib model could withstand a 4 kg rigid object impact at 2 m/s without fracture. Reconstructing the artificial rib with a human rib in the finite element analysis model increases the overall stress tolerance. The impact force required for fracture increases 48% compared to the artificial rib alone, suggesting improved strength from rib integration. Clinically, 10 of 13 patients receiving the artificial rib implants show no significant loss of pulmonary function based on spirometry tests. Based on our findings, the combined simulations and clinical results validate the strong mechanical performance and biocompatibility of the carbon fiber artificial ribs for chest wall reconstruction under static and dynamic loading while maintaining normal respiratory function.

Abstract Background Lung metastasis is a significant adverse predictor of prognosis in patients with breast cancer. Accurate estimation for the prognosis of patients with lung metastasis and population-based validation for the models are lacking. In the present study, we aimed to establish the nomogram to identify prognostic factors correlated with lung metastases and evaluate individualized survival in patients with lung metastasis based on SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) database. Methods We selected 1197 patients diagnosed with breast cancer with lung metastasis (BCLM) from the SEER database and randomly assigned them to the training group (n = 837) and the testing group (n = 360). Based on univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis, we evaluated the effects of multiple variables on survival in the training group and constructed a nomogram to predict the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival probability of patients. The nomogram were verified internally and externally by Concordance index (C-index), Net Reclassification (NRI), Integrated Discrimination Improvement (IDI), Decision Curve Analysis (DCA), and calibration plots. Results According to the results of multi-factor Cox regression analysis, age, histopathology, grade, marital status, bone metastasis, brain metastasis, liver metastasis, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), surgery, neoadjuvant therapy and chemotherapy were considered as independent prognostic factors for patients with BCLM. The C-index in the training group was 0.719 and the testing group was 0.695, respectively. The AUC values of the 1-, 2-, and 3-year prognostic nomogram in the training group were 0.798, 0.790 and 0.793, and the corresponding AUC values in the testing group were 0.765, 0.761 and 0.722. The calculation results of IDI and NRI were shown. The nomograms significantly improved the risk reclassification for 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall mortality prediction compared with the AJCC 7th staging system. According to the calibration plot, nomograms showed good consistency between predicted and actual overall survival (OS) values for the patients with BCLM. DCA showed that nomograms had better net benefits at different threshold probabilities at different time points compared with the AJCC 7th staging system. Conclusions Nomograms that predicted 1-, 2-, and 3-year OS for patients with BCLM were successfully constructed and validated to help physicians in evaluating the high risk of mortality in breast cancer patients.

Abstract Objectives The relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of developing kidney stones is unclear, and we aimed to assess the association between CRP and kidney stones in US adults. Methods We used data from NHANES 2007–2010, and we excluded participants who were under 18 years of age and lacked data on CRP and kidney stones. Finally, we included a total of 11,033 participants and performed weighted multivariate regression analysis and subgroup analysis to assess the independent relationship between CRP and kidney stones. Results The mean prevalence of kidney stones among the participants was 9.8%. Notably, as CRP levels increased, the prevalence of kidney stones exhibited a corresponding rise across quartiles (Kidney stones: Quartile 1: 7.59%; Quartile 2: 8.77%; Quartile 3: 9.64%; Quartile 4: 10.89%). CRP was positively associated with the risk of kidney stones (Model 1: OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.01–1.18, p = 0.03; Model 2: OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.00–1.18, p = 0.03, Model 3: OR = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.02–1.26, p = 0.04). Participants in the highest CRP quartile experienced a 69% increased risk of kidney stones compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.04–2.59, p = 0.03). Notably, interaction tests revealed that gender, BMI, diabetes, hypertension, CKD and smoking or alcohol consumption status did not significantly influence the association between CRP and kidney stones. Conclusions Our findings reveal a significant association between higher CRP levels and an increased risk of kidney stones. In clinical practice, heightened awareness of CRP as a potential biomarker could aid in risk assessment and management strategies for kidney stone patients.

AbstractAlviniconcha marisindica Okutani 2014 is a deep-sea gastropod inhabited in hydrothermal vents of the Indo-Pacific. It belongs to superfamily Abyssochrysoidea. In the present study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of A. marisindica, which is 15,979 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes. The nucleotide composition is 29.19% of A, 38.22% of T, 16.88% of G, and 15.71% of C. The phylogenetic analysis indicates that A. marisindica and A. boucheti clustered in the Abyssochrysoidea clade with high bootstrap support. The mitochondrial genome of A. marisindica provides valuable molecular data for further research on the evolution of deep-sea gastropods.

In order to explore an efficient artificial light environment for improving the quality of Michelia baillonii and shortening its cultivation cycle, the annual seedlings of M. baillonii were exposed to five composite lights, red+ blue (8R1B, 6R1B), red+blue+purple+green (8R1B1P1G, 6R1B1P1G), and white light (W) with two photoperiods (12,16 h·d-1), two-factor experiment with randomized block design and subordinate function were used to explore the response pattern of the growth, photosynthetic pigments and endogenous hormone contents of M. baillonii seedlings to different light qualities and photoperiods. Polarized light has promising applications in biological inspections, displays, and precise measurements. Direct emission of polarized light from a semiconductor device is highly desired in order to reduce the size and energy-consumption of the whole system. In this study, we demonstrate a semipolar GaN-based microcavity light-emitting diode (MCLED) that could simultaneously produce green light with perpendicular and parallel polarizations to the c*-axis. Orthogonally polarized emission with a narrow linewidth (∼0.2 nm) arises from the valence band splitting and birefringent nature of the semipolar GaN material, as well as the mode selection of the resonant cavity. By modulating the cavity length, the device is capable of switching between single- and multi-mode emission spectra. We believe that the approach of employing a cavity structure and semipolar GaN can be extended to produce orthogonally and linearly polarized blue, red, and violet light by adjusting the material compositions.

Abstract Aim Our aim in this study was primarily to assess the relationship between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the risk of kidney stones and kidney stone recurrence in US adults. Methods We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2014 for our analysis. VAI was calculated from waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). Kidney stones and recurrence of kidney stones were obtained from questionnaire interview data. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to explore the correlation between VAI and the risk of kidney stone and kidney stone recurrence. In addition, we performed subgroup analysis, interaction tests, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis. Results A total of 9886 participants were included in this study, with a prevalence of 9.24% for kidney stones and 2.97% for recurrence of kidney stones. The prevalence of kidney stones and kidney stone recurrence increased with higher quartiles of VAI. We observed a significantly positive correlation between VAI and the risk of kidney stone and kidney stone recurrence. Participants with the highest VAI quartiles had a 48% (OR: 1.48, 95%CI: 1.08–2.02) and 52% (OR: 1.52, 95%CI: 0.86–2.71) increased risk of kidney stones and kidney stone recurrence, respectively, compared to participants with the lowest VAI quartiles. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests demonstrated this positive association independent of different subgroup factors. Conclusion Visceral fat accumulation may be associated with an increased risk of kidney stones and kidney stone recurrence.

Abstract This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model for gastrointestinal bleeding in patients after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and assessed its accuracy. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 232 patients who underwent CABG under general anesthesia in our hospital between January 2022 and December 2022. The patients were divided into gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) group (n = 52) and group without gastrointestinal bleeding (non-GIB) (n = 180). The independent risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding in post-CABG patients were analyzed using χ2 test, t test and logistic multivariate regression analysis. A prediction model was established based on the identified risk factors. To verify the accuracy of the prediction model, a verification group of 161 patients who met the criteria was selected between January to June 2023, and the Bootstrap method was used for internal validation. The discrimination of the prediction model was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), where a higher AUC indicates a stronger discrimination effect of the model. The study developed a risk prediction model for gastrointestinal bleeding after CABG surgery. The model identified four independent risk factors: duration of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) (OR 0.761), cardiopulmonary bypass time (OR 1.019), prolonged aortic occlusion time (OR 0.981) and re-operation for bleeding (OR 0.180). Based on these factors, an individualized risk prediction model was constructed. The C-index values of the modeling group and the verification group were 0.805 [95% CI (0.7303–0.8793)] and 0.785 [95% CI (0.6932–0.8766)], respectively, which indicated a good accuracy and discrimination of this model. The calibration and standard curves showed similar results, which further supported the accuracy of the risk prediction model. In conclusion, ICU time, cardiopulmonary bypass time, aortic occlusion time and re-operation for bleeding are identified as independent risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding in patients after CABG. The risk prediction model developed in this study demonstrates strong predictive performance and provides valuable insights for clinical medical professionals in evaluating gastrointestinal complications in CABG patients.

Introduction: Bladder reconstruction is a huge challenge in the field of urology. In recent years, perfusion methods have brought promising results in the field of tissue engineering. We prepared bladder decellularized scaffolds by improved perfusion, which may be suitable for bladder reconstruction. Methods: We prepared decellularized scaffolds of rat bladder by perfusion of SDS (0.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate), SDS-SDC (0.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate +0.5% sodium deoxycholate). Histological characteristics of bladder decellularized scaffolds were assessed by Hematoxylin and eosin, Masson, and DAPI staining. Moreover, we also prepared a murine bladder transplantation model to evaluate the regenerative potential of scaffolds. Results: Hematoxylin and eosin, Masson, and DAPI staining indicated almost no cellular component residues in the SDS-SDC group. Histological analysis (hematoxylin and eosin staining, Masson staining), CD31 and F4/80 staining analysis, one month after implantation, revealed that the decellularized scaffolds had regenerative characteristics, and the SDS-SDC scaffold had better regenerative properties than the SDS scaffold. Conclusions: We successfully prepared the decellularized scaffold for the rat bladder by perfusion. Our results showed that the SDS-SDC scaffold had better decellularization efficiency and reconstruction ability than the SDS scaffold, which provides a new perspective on bladder reconstruction materials.

Abstract Background Several observational studies have found that physical inactivity and sedentary time are associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) risk. However, the causality between them still requires further investigation. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the causal effect of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time on the risk of IPF via two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Multiple genome-wide association study (GWAS) data involving individuals of European ancestry were analyzed. The datasets encompassed published UK Biobank data (91,105–377,234 participants) and IPF data (2018 cases and 373,064 controls) from FinnGen Biobank. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was the primary approach for our analysis. Sensitivity analyses were implemented with Cochran’s Q test, MR-Egger regression, MR-PRESSO global test, and leave-one-out analysis. Results Genetically predicted self-reported PA was associated with lower IPF risk [OR = 0.27; 95% CI 0.09–0.82; P = 0.02]. No causal effects of accelerometry-based PA or sedentary time on the risk of IPF were observed. Conclusions Our findings supported a protective relationship between self-reported PA and the risk for IPF. The results suggested that enhancing PA may be an effective preventive strategy for IPF.

Abstract Background In recent years, the physical fitness situation of college students is worrying in China. Exercise motivation is of great importance for the physical activity and physical fitness. However, existing studies have paid limited attention to the specific effect between exercise motivation, physical activity and physical fitness, and even less to the different genders and exercise motivation dimensions. This study aimed to investigate the promoting effect of sport motivation on physical fitness with different gender and dimension in college students. Methods Physical fitness levels of 2544 college students in Wuhan and Jingzhou city were measured. Exercise motivation and physical activity was assessed using the Chinese version of the motives for physical activities measure-revised scale and the physical activity survey scale, respectively. Correlation analysis and structural equation model were used to explore the relationship between exercise motivation, physical activity and physical fitness. Bootstrap method was used to test the mediating effect. Multilevel regression analysis was used to examine the effects of different dimensions of exercise motivation on PF. Results The exercise motivation of college students was directly related to physical fitness (effect value: 0.307) or indirectly related through the mediating effect of physical activity (effect value: 0.092). AbstractPseudofabraea citricarpa (Dermateaceae: Helotiales) is known as a significant pathogen causing Citrus target spot disease and results in profound yield loss. In the present study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) determined based on next-generation sequencing technology. The circular mitogenome (56,935 bp) comprised 14 conserved protein-coding genes (PCGs), 16 ORFs, two ribosomal RNA genes (rns and rnl), one non-coding RNA gene (rnpB), one ribosomal protein S3 (rps3) and 28 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. The overall base composition is as follows: 36.08% A, 35.25% T, 13.04% C, and 15.63% G, with a GC content of 28.70%. The phylogenetic analysis shows that P. citricarpa, belonging to Dermateaceae, forms a separate clade and is sister to Sclerotiniaceae. The mitogenome of P. citricarpa reported in this study provides more molecular data for further research on the evolutionary relationships of Helotiales.
