This study investigated the effects of dopaminergic drugs on the EEG mu power during motor imagery, action observation, and execution. This is a double-blind, crossover study with a sample of 15 healthy adults under placebo vs. methylphenidate vs. risperidone conditions during motor imagery, action observation, and execution tasks. The participants had drug dosage adjustment based on body weight/dose (mg/kg). We also analyzed the mu band power by electroencephalography during the study steps. The main result is the interaction between the condition and task factors for the C3 and C4 electrodes, with decreasing EEG mu power in the methylphenidate when compared to risperidone (p ≤ 0.0083). Our results can indicate that the methylphenidate decreases the neurophysiological activity in the central cortical regions during the perceptual experience of tasks with or without body movement.

The study investigated the cortical activity changes and time production task performance induced by changes in motion speed of a non-immersive 3D virtual stimulus.Twenty-one individuals were participated in the crossover study with the visual-time reproduction task under three-speed conditions: original, slow and fast virtual stimulus. In addition, the electroencephalographic analysis of the theta band power in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was done simultaneously with time production task execution.The results demonstrated that in the slow speed condition, there is an increase in the error in the time production task after virtual reality (We propose that the modulations of speed of virtual stimulus may underlie the accumulation of temporal pulses, which could be responsible for changes in the performance of the production task of the time intervals and a substantial increase in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity related to attention and memory, acting in cognitive domains of supraseconds.

BACKGROUND: Motor Imagery (MI) represents the cognitive component of the movement and recruits dopaminergic systems. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of dopaminergic system through the action of methylphenidate and risperidone over beta coherence during execution, action observation and motor imagery. METHODS: Electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded before and after the substance intake. For statistical analysis, a three-way ANOVA was used to identify changes in beta coherence induced by the group, task and the moment variables. Statistical significance was set at p≤0.007. RESULTS: We found a main effect for group for C3/CZ, and a main effect for task for CZ/C4 pairs of electrodes. Furthermore, significant differences were found in the post-drug administration between groups for C3/CZ pair of electrodes, and between task for C4/CZ pair of electrodes. CONCLUSION: The administration of methylphenidate and risperidone was able to produce electrocortical changes of the cortical central regions, even when featuring antagonistic effects on the dopaminergic pathways. Moreover, the execution task allowed beta-band modulation increase., Introdução: A imagética motora (IM) representa o componente cognitivo do movimento e recruta os sistemas dopaminérgicos. Objetivo: Investigar o papel do sistema dopaminérgico por meio da ação do metilfenidato e da risperidona sobre a coerência em beta durante a execução, observação de ação e imagética motora. Métodos: Os dados de eletroencefalografia (EEG) foram registrados antes e depois da ingestão das substâncias. Para a análise estatística, uma ANOVA de três vias foi utilizada para identificar mudanças na coerência beta induzidas pelas variáveis grupo, tarefa e momento. A significância estatística foi estabelecida em p≤0,007. Resultados: Encontramos um efeito principal para o grupo C3/CZ e um efeito principal para a tarefa nos pares de eletrodos CZ/C4. Além disso, diferenças significativas foram encontradas após a administração da droga entre os grupos para o par de eletrodos C3/CZ e entre tarefa para o par de eletrodos C4/CZ. Conclusão: A administração de metilfenidato e risperidona foi capaz de produzir alterações eletrocorticais das regiões somatomotoras, mesmo apresentando efeitos antagônicos nas vias dopaminérgicas. Além disso, a tarefa de execução provocou maior modulação da banda beta.

This study investigated whether time-estimation task exposure influences the severity of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as theta band activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex.Twenty-two patients with ADHD participated in a crossover experiment with a visual time-estimation task under control conditions (without exposure to time estimation tasks) and experimental (thirty days exposure to time-estimation tasks) in association with electroencephalographic analysis of theta band.ADHD patients with thirty days of time-estimation task exposure presented a worse performance of the time-estimation task, as revealed by the measurements of the absolute error and relative error (We propose that the decrease in EEG theta power may indicate an efficient accumulation of temporal pulses, which could be responsible for the improvement in the patient cognitive aspects as demonstrated by the current study. Time-estimation task improves ADHD cognitive symptoms, with a substantial increase in cortical areas activity related to attention and memory, suggesting its use as a tool for cognitive timing function management and non-invasive therapeutic aid in ADHD.

Methylphenidate produces its effects via actions on cortical areas involved with attention and working memory, which have a direct role in time estimation judgment tasks. In particular, the prefrontal and parietal cortex has been the target of several studies to understand the effect of methylphenidate on executive functions and time interval perception. However, it has not yet been studied whether acute administration of methylphenidate influences performance in time estimation task and the changes in alpha band absolute power in the prefrontal and parietal cortex. The current study investigates the influence of the acute use of methylphenidate in both performance and judgment in the time estimation interpretation through the alpha band absolute power activity in the prefrontal and parietal cortex. This study investigated the differences in frontoparietal EEG gamma coherence between expert meditators (EM) and naïve meditators (NM).This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of twenty-one healthy adults divided under two groups (experts meditators vs. naive-meditators), with analyzing the intra-hemispheric coherence of frontoparietal gamma oscillations by electroencephalography during the study steps: EEG resting-state 1, during the open presence meditation practice, and EEG resting-state 2.The findings demonstrated greater frontoparietal EEG coherence in gamma for experts meditators in the Fp1-P3, F4-P4, F8-P4 electrode pairs during rest 1 and rest 2 (p ≤ 0.0083). In addition, we evidenced differences in the frontoparietal EEG coherence for expert meditators in F4-P4, F8-P4 during the meditation (p ≤ 0.0083).Our results can support evidence that the connectivity of the right frontoparietal network acts as a biomarker of the enhanced Open monitoring meditation training.

The voluntary movement demands integration between cognitive and motor functions. During the initial stages of motor learning until mastery of a new motor task, and during a demanding task that is not automatic, cognitive and motor functions can be perceived as independent from each other. Areas used for actually performing motor tasks are essentially the same used by Motor Imagery (MI). The main objective of this study was to investigate inhibition effects on cognitive functions of motor skills induced by low-frequency (1 Hz) Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) at the sensory-motor integration site (Cz). In particular, the goal was to examine absolute alpha and beta power changes on frontal regions during Execution, Action observation, and Motor Imagery of finger movement tasks. Eleven healthy, right-handed volunteers of both sexes (5 males, 6 females; mean age 28 ± 5 years), with no history of psychiatric or neurological disorders, participated in the experiment. The execution task consisted of the subject flexing and extending the index finger. The action observation task involved watching a video of the same movement. The motor imagery task was imagining the flexion and extension of the index finger movement. After performing the tasks randomly, subjects were submitted to 15 min of low-frequency rTMS and performed the tasks again. All tasks were executed simultaneously with EEG signals recording. Our results demonstrated a significant interaction between rTMS and the three tasks in almost all analyzed regions showing that rTMS can affect the frontal region regarding Execution, Action observation, and Motor Imagery tasks.

Métodos de estimulação cerebral não invasiva, como a estimulação magnética transcraniana (EMT), vêm demonstrando bons resultados na reabilitação de transtornos neuropsiquiátricos, porém ainda é uma ferramenta de alto custo. Neste contexto, uma possibilidade de uso simples e seguro e que tem demonstrado resultados positivos na modulação da atividade cerebral em transtornos neuropsiquiátricos é a chamada estimulação transcraniana por corrente contínua de baixa intensidade (ETCC). Porém, são necessárias mais pesquisas devido à variabilidade de parâmetros, como número de pulsos, intensidade de estimulação, número de sessões, o estágio da doença, o uso de medicações, e o estágio de tratamento do paciente.

Panic disorder (PD) is characterized by repeated and unexpected attacks of intense anxiety, which are not restricted to a determined situation or circumstance. The coherence function has been used to investigate the communication among brain structures through the quantitative EEG (qEEG). The objective of this study is to analyze if there is a difference in frontoparietal gamma coherence (GC) between panic disorder patients (PDP) and healthy controls (HC) during the Visual oddball paradigm; and verify if high levels of anxiety (produced by a computer simulation) affect PDP's working memory. Nine PDP (9 female with average age of 48.8, SD: 11.16) and ten HC (1 male and 9 female with average age of 38.2, SD: 13.69) were enrolled in this study. The subjects performed the visual oddball paradigm simultaneously to the EEG record before and after the presentation of computer simulation (CS). A two-way ANOVA was applied to analyze the factors Group and the Moment for each pair of electrodes separately, and another one to analyze the reaction time variable. We verified a F3-P3 GC increased after the CS movie, demonstrating the left hemisphere participation during the anxiety processing. The greater GC in HC observed in the frontal and parietal areas (P3-Pz, F4-F8 and Fp2-F4) points to the participation of these areas with the expected behavior. The greater GC in PDP for F7-F3 and F4-P4 pairs of electrodes assumes that it produces a prejudicial "noise" during information processing, and can be associated to interference on the communication between frontal and parietal areas. This "noise" during information processing is related to PD symptoms, which should be better known in order to develop effective treatment strategies.

Taurine and alcohol has been popularly ingested through energy drinks. Reports from both compounds shows they are active on nervous system but little is known about the acute effect of these substances on the frontal cortex in an exercise approach. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of 0,6mldL-1 of ethanol (ET), 6g of taurine (TA), and taurine with ethanol (TA+ET) intake on absolute alpha power (AAP) in the frontal region, before and after exercise. Nine participants were recruited, five women (22±3years) and four men (26±5years), for a counterbalanced experimental design. For each treatment, the tests were performed considering three moments: "baseline", "peak" and "post-exercise". In the placebo treatment (PL), the frontal areas showed AAP decrease at the post-exercise. However, in the TA, AAP decreased at peak and increased at post-exercise. In the ET treatment, AAP increased at the peak moment for the left frontal electrodes. In the TA+ET treatment, an AAP increase was observed at peak, and it continued after exercise ended. These substances were able to produce electrocortical activity changes in the frontal regions after a short duration and low intensity exercise. Left and right regions showed different AAP dynamics during peak and post-exercise moments when treatments were compared.

Deviations of the vertebral column have become increasingly common. The follow-up of a spine deviation is performed every 2 or 3 months by routine visits and X-ray examinations. X-ray examination produces ionising radiation, which, over time, can cause cancer and is accumulative: this risk increases with the number of exposures. This work describes the conception and initial development of a simple and portable system based on stereoscopy capable of performing a topographic analysis of the patient’s back, as well as 3D reconstruction, in order to subsequently allow postural assessment. The stereoscopic system was built and calibrated, then the images underwent a process of rectification and point matching to create a depth map, so that preliminary results point to adequate 3D reconstruction of the back of a plastic phantom. The advantage of this method is the minimization of parallax errors, low cost, easy implementation and portability.

Mindfulness attitudes, as gentleness, openness, acceptance, curiosity and being non-judgmental have been related to improvement in cognitive and emotional functions, but few studies have focused on its specific contribution. The present study investigated the effect of the mindfulness attitudes on top-down attentional control abilities. Twenty one healthy participants were submitted to two conditions: a Mindfulness induction session where participants practiced focusing on the sensory sensations of breathing while encouraged to incorporate the five mindfulness attitudes and an attentional control session in which participants were repeatedly instructed to merely attend to the breath, without any mindfulness attitude component. Before and after each condition, participants performed two blocks of the oddball task while EEG was recorded. Contrary to our expectations, attentional control assessed through amplitude and latency of the P3b ERP component and oddball task accuracy did not show any changes in any of the conditions. These results suggest that a low dose of mindfulness training in naive individuals, through a focused breath induction, is not enough to improve the allocation of attentional resources towards task-relevant stimuli.

The current study is a reanalysis in the time domain of EEG data collection in healthy adults during an oddball paradigm using levetiracetam (LEV) vs. placebo acute administration. Specifically, the event-related potential (ERP) technique provides a tool for exploring the EEG responses to a specific event/stimulus. One of the ERP components widely studied is the P300 component, which is associated with the last stage of information processing and a general measurement of "cognitive efficiency."The sample was composed of thirteen healthy right-handed individuals randomized to participate under two conditions: LEV and placebo. Electrophysiological measures were collected before and after drug intake. We explored the oddball paradigm, which is commonly used with healthy individuals to investigate the stages of information processing.The electrophysiological results showed a main effect of condition on P300 amplitude for the frontal (F3, Fz, F4), central (C3, Cz, C4), and parietal electrodes (P3, Pz, P4). The post hoc comparisons (Scheffé's test) demonstrated the significant differences between electrodes. Regarding P300 latency, all regions represented a main effect of condition. A P300 latency reduction was observed during LEV condition compared with placebo.Our study observed the ERP component-P300-through the variation of its amplitude and latency to evaluate a supposed higher CNS efficiency when participants were under the LEV effect. Our findings sustain this premise, mainly due to reducing in P300 latency for the LEV condition, supporting the neural efficiency hypothesis.

Musculoskeletal pain (myofascial) is a frequent complaint in the current population. This discomfort is usually related to excessive use of a limb, bad posture, muscle overload, tension. Little is known about the mechanisms for the perception of this pain by the brain (as well as practically all painful stimuli). Although there are numerous forms of pain diagnosis, almost all of them are subjective, through visual scales or questionnaires, and the vast majority depends on the patient's cognitive state. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in Brain connectivity using Electroencephalogram (EEG) related to myofascial pain event. EEG signals were acquired from 9 participants with musculoskeletal pain in the trapezius region. During the trials, 4 muscle points were compressed in random order, 2 non-painful in the region of the anterior deltoid muscle and 2 trigger points in the trapezium. The generalized Partial Directed Coherence of the acquired signals showed the presence of more connections between the hemispheres when the pain was in the right side of the body and that there was more connectivity in the left hemisphere. A dense flow of information was found in the frontal and temporal regions of the brain, which is explained in the Pain Matrix. These findings suggested that the myofascial pain is processed in the left hemisphere and influences the connections with the right hemisphere when the painful stimulus is in the right side of the body.

The virtual reality environment has allowed the study of the activation of the cerebral pathways and the understanding of the neurophysiological aspects from multicentric electroencephalographic monitoring and visual evoked potential related to the movement. So, the dynamic virtual scene has supported the assessment of the sensory pathways involved with the postural control and the complex integration of the visual, somatosensitive and vestibular systems, as well as the planning of the motor actions that helps in the postural adjustments. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of dynamic visual stimulation with the use of stereoscopy to elicit Motion-Related Visual Evoked Potential (M-VEP) through 3D virtual scene. In this study, twenty-five healthy volunteers have participated, 8 women and 17 men, aged 28.24 ± 7.06 years. The M-VEP has shown a significant difference (p < 0.10) in the time range related to the P3 component in all derivations except Fp1, F8, Pz, O1, Oz and O2. A pattern of greater latency variability was identified in the DSF stimulation condition, and a greater variability of the amplitude related to DSB. In addition, it was observed that the M-VEP related to the approximation scenario presented higher latency in the occipital and parietal region, pointing to a possible delayed perception of the movement of this scenario. Nevertheless, more studies are necessary to conclude this possible delay in the integration of somatosensory information as strategy of postural control.

In the present work, the Event-Related Synchronization and Desynchronization (ERS/ERD) index, expressed as a function of the Spectral F-Test (SFT), was applied to evaluate motor response uncertainty. The aim of this study was to investigate the EEG synchronization prior to the motor response in order to intercept a ball with unknown trajectory. A protocol of soccer-penalty simulation in 3D virtual reality environment was proposed, composed by a ball interception procedure that simulates the defense from the goalkeeper view, divided into three types of stimuli: left (LB), right (RB) and centered ball. The EEG signals of 27 right-handed adults were assessed using ERS/ERD index, and the McNemar test was then applied in order to compare the proportions of synchronization occurrence for the same channels and frequency bands between LB-RB with 0.05 of significance level. The results indicate a consistent occurrence of ERS in gamma band, but not for alpha and beta bands. Also, the synchronization occurrence seems to differ depending on the direction of the ball trajectory, particularly in gamma band. These findings support the need of further studies to provide important parameters to analyze neural activity during motor preparation.

Cardiac responses to appetitive stimuli have been studied as indices of motivational states and attentional processes, the former being associated with cardiac acceleration and latter deceleration. Very few studies have examined heart rate changes in appetitive classical conditioning in humans. The current study describes the development and pilot testing of a classical conditioning task to assess cardiac responses to appetitive stimuli and cues that reliably precede them. Data from 18 adults were examined. They were shown initially neutral visual stimuli (putative CS) on a computer screen followed by pictures of high-caloric food (US). Phasic cardiac deceleration to food images was observed, consistent with an orienting response to motivationally significant stimuli. Similar responses were observed to non-appetitive stimuli when they were preceded by the cue associated with the food images, suggesting that attentional processes were engaged by conditioned stimuli. These autonomic changes provide significant information about classical conditioning effects in humans.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by an alternated occurrence between acute mania episodes and depression or remission moments. The objective of this study is to analyze the information processing changes in BP (Bipolar Patients) (euthymia, depression and mania) during the oddball paradigm, focusing on the P300 component, an electric potential of the cerebral cortex generated in response to external sensorial stimuli, which involves more complex neurophysiological processes related to stimulus interpretation. Twenty-eight bipolar disorder patients (BP) (17 women and 11 men with average age of 32.5, SD: 9.5) and eleven healthy controls (HC) (7 women and 4 men with average age of 29.78, SD: 6.89) were enrolled in this study. The bipolar patients were divided into 3 major groups (i.e., euthymic, depressive and maniac) according to the score on the Clinical Global Impression--Bipolar Version (CGI-BP). The subjects performed the oddball paradigm simultaneously to the EEG record. EEG data were also recorded before and after the execution of the task. A one-way ANOVA was applied to compare the P300 component among the groups. After observing P300 and the subcomponents P3a and P3b, a similarity of amplitude and latency between euthymic and depressive patients was observed, as well as small amplitude in the pre-frontal cortex and reduced P3a response. This can be evidence of impaired information processing, cognitive flexibility, working memory, executive functions and ability to shift the attention and processing to the target and away from distracting stimuli in BD. Such neuropsychological impairments are related to different BD symptoms, which should be known and considered, in order to develop effective clinical treatment strategies.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used as a non-invasive method for enhanced motor and cognitive abilities. However, no previous study has investigated if the tDCS application in unskilled shooters on cortical sites, selected based on the cortical activity of skilled shooters, improves the accuracy and shot grouping. Sixty participants were selected, which included 10 skilled shooters and 50 unskilled shooters. After we identified the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) as the area with the highest activity in skilled shooters, we applied anodal tDCS over the right DLPFC in the unskilled shooters under two conditions: sham-tDCS (placebo) and real-tDCS (anodal tDCS). We also analyzed electroencephalography. Our results indicated that anodal tDCS application enhanced the shot accuracy (p = 0.001). Furthermore, the beta power in the EEG recording was higher in the left DLPFC, left and right parietal cortex (p = 0,001) after applying anodal tDCS, while the low-gamma power was higher in the right DLPFC in sham-tDCS (p = 0.001) and right parietal cortex after anodal-tDCS (p = 0.001). Our findings indicate that anodal tDCS can improve accuracy and shot grouping when applied over the unskilled shooters' right DLPFC. Furthermore, beta and low-gamma bands are influenced by anodal tDCS over the right DLPFC, which may be predictive of skill improvement.

Although Parkinson Disease was described a long time ago by James Parkinson and several biomarkers were used to predict the symptoms of PD, there is no accepted tool to distinguish the initial stages of this pathology. The present hypothesis discusses the Coherence Function, an Electroencephalography measure which could be used as a simple, and low-cost tool to describe the onset of cardinal signals of PD. Our hypothesis is based on three factors: beta frequency related to movement, motor action over particular cortical regions, and cortical coupling between cortical areas involved in the execution of voluntary movement. We believe that these factors support our hypothesis pointing out coherence function as an interesting measure to detect initial stages of PD.

The low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) application has been associated with changes in cognitive processes embedded during time perception tasks. Although several studies have investigated the influence of neuromodulation on time perception, the effect of the 1-Hz rTMS application on the superior parietal cortex is not clearly understood. This study analyzes the effect of the low-frequency rTMS on time estimation when applied in the parietal medial longitudinal fissure. For the proposed study, 20 subjects were randomly selected for a crossover study with two conditions (sham and 1 Hz). Our findings reveal that participant underestimate 1-s time interval and overestimate 4-s and 9-s time intervals after 1-Hz rTMS (p ≤ 0.05). We conclude that the 1-Hz rTMS in the parietal medial longitudinal fissure delays short interval and speed up long time intervals. This could be due to the effect of parietal inhibition on the attentional level and working memory functions during time estimation.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) studies are used to test motor imagery hypothesis. Motor Imagery (MI) represents conscious access to contents of movement intention, generally executed unconsciously during motor preparation. The main objective of this study was to investigate electrophysiological changes, which occurred before and after low-frequency rTMS application when we compared three different tasks: execution, action observation and motor imagery of finger movement. We hypothesize that absolute theta power over frontal regions would change between sensorimotor integration tasks and after 1 Hz of rTMS application. Eleven healthy, right-handed volunteers of both sexes (5 males, 6 females; mean age 28 ± 5 years), with no history of psychiatric or neurological disorders, participated in the experiment. After performing the tasks randomly, subjects were submitted to 15 min of low-frequency rTMS applied on Superior Parietal Cortex (SPC) and performed the tasks again. All tasks were executed simultaneously with Eletroencephalography (EEG) signals recording. Our results clarified the specificity of each sub-region during MI activity. Frontopolar cortex presented involvement with motor process and showed main effect for task and moment. Inferior frontal gyrus presented involvement with long-term memory retrieval and showed interaction between task and moment in the left hemisphere while the right hemisphere showed a main effect for task and moment. The lack of the main effect for conditions on the anterior frontal cortex collaborates with the hypothesis that in this region an integrated circuit of performance monitoring exists.

EEG data were recorded before, during and after the execution of the task. A three-way ANOVA was applied, in order to compare the absolute alpha power among the factors: Group (control, bromazepam and modafinil) Condition (Pre and Post-drug ingestion) and Moment (pre and post-stimulus).Results Interaction was found between the group and condition factors for Fp1, F4 and F3. We observed a main effect of moment and condition for the Fp2, F8 and Fz electrodes.Conclusion We concluded that drugs may interfere in sensorimotor processes, such as in the performance of tasks carried out in an unpredictable scenario.

The present study investigates the influence of bromazepam while executing a motor task. Specifically, we intend to analyze the changes in alpha absolute power under two experimental conditions, bromazepam and placebo. We also included analyses of theta and beta frequencies. We collected electroencephalographic data before, during, and after motor task execution. We used a Two Way ANOVA to investigate the condition (PL × Br6 mg) and moment (pre and post) variables for the following electrodes: Fp1, Fp2, F7, F3, Fz, F4, F8, C3, CZ and C4. We found a main effect for condition on the electrodes FP1, F7, F3, Fz, F4, C3 and CZ, for alpha and beta bands. For beta band we also found a main effect for condition on the electrodes Fp2, F8 and C4; for theta band we identified a main effect for condition on C3, Cz and C4 electrodes. This finding suggests that the motor task did not have any influence on the electrocortical activity in alpha, and that the existing modifications were a consequence due merely to the drug use. Despite its anxiolytic and sedative action, bromazepam did not show any significant changes when the individuals executed a finger extension motor task. O presente estudo investiga a influência do bromazepam durante a execução de uma tarefa motora. Especificamente, pretende-se analisar as mudanças na potência absoluta de alfa sob duas condições experimentais, bromazepam e placebo. Nós também incluímos as analises das frequências teta e beta. Foram coletados dados eletroencefalográficos antes, durante e depois da execução da tarefa motora. Usamos uma Anova de 2 fatores para investigar a condição (PL × Br6 mg) e variáveis no momento (pré e pós) para os seguintes eletrodos: Fp1, Fp2, F7, F3, Fz, F4, F8, C3, C4 e CZ. Encontramos um efeito principal para a condição e eletrodos FP1, F7, F3, Fz, F4, C3 e CZ para alfa e beta. Para beta também foi encontrado um efeito principal para condição nos eletrodos Fp2, F8 e C4; para theta nós identificamos um efeito principal para condition em C3, Cz e C4. Este achado sugere que a tarefa motora não tem qualquer influência sobre a atividade eletrocortical alfa e que as modificações existentes foram uma consequência devido o uso de drogas. Apesar de sua ação ansiolítica e sedativa, o bromazepam não apresentou mudança significativa quando os indivíduos executaram uma tarefa motora.

El procesamiento digital de la señal de electroencefalograma (EEG) ha tomado importancia en el monitoreo de profundidad anestésica, contribuyendo a una mejor técnica anestésica. El objetivo es realizar una revisión de métodos matemáticos no lineales aplicados recientemente al análisis de EEG la cual presenta características no lineales y no estacionarias. Una revisión fue desarrollada abarcando métodos matemáticos no lineales en el dominio del tiempo y frecuencia, los cuales han sido aplicados recientemente al análisis de EEG: Entropía Aproximada, Entropía Muestral, Entropía Espectral, Entropía Permutada, Transformada Wavelet, Entropía Wavelet, Bispectro, Bicoherencia y Transformada Hilbert Huang. Los algoritmos implementados fueron probados en un registro EEG de un paciente en la Clínica Universidad de La Sabana. Resultados publicados en la literatura a fin del tema son discutidos. Técnicas no lineales como el análisis de entropía, y la combinación con transformadas Wavelet y Hilbert Huang en el dominio de la frecuencia han presentado resultados prometedores en clasificación de estados de profundidad anestésica.

Ethanol (ET) is a substance that modulates the Central Nervous System (CNS). Frequently, ET intake occurs combined with energy drinks, which contain taurine (TA), an important amino acid found in the body (i.e brain and muscles). Although TA administration has been used in the improvement of physical performance, the impact of TA, ET and exercise remains unknown. This study aimed to analyze the acute effect of 6g of Taurine (TA), 0.6 mL∙kg-1 of Ethanol (ET), and Taurine combined with Ethanol (TA+ET) ingestion on the electrocortical activity before and after a moderate intensity exercise in 9 subjects, 5 women (counterbalanced experimental design). In each of the 4 treatments (Placebo-PL, TA, ET and TA+ET), electroencephalography (EEG) tests were conducted in order to analyze changes in absolute beta power (ABP) in the frontal lobe in 3 moments: baseline (before ingestion), peak (before exercise) and post-exercise. In the PL treatment, the frontal areas showed decrease in ABP after exercise. However, in the ET+TA treatment, ABP values were greater after exercise, except for Fp1. The ET treatment had no effect on the Superior Frontal Gyrus area (F3, Fz and F4) and ABP decreased after exercise in Fp1 and Fp2. In the TA treatment, ABP increased after exercise, while it decreased at the peak moment in most of the frontal regions, except for Fp1, F3 and Fz. We concluded that after a moderate intensity exercise, a decrease in cortical activity occurs in placebo treatment. Moreover, we found a inhibitory effect of TA on cortical activity before exercise and a increased in cortical activity after exercise. A small ET dose is not enough to alter ABP in all regions of the frontal cortex and, in combination with TA, it showed an increase in the frontal cortex activity at the post-exercise moment.

The physiotherapist's clinical practice includes proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), which is a treatment concept that accelerates the response of neuromuscular mechanisms through spiral and diagonal movements. The adaptations that occur in the nervous system following PNF are still poorly described in the literature. Thus, this study had a goal to investigate the electrophysiological changes in the fronto-parietal circuit during PNF and movement in sagittal and diagonal patterns. This study included 30 female participants, who were divided into three groups (control, PNF, and flexion groups). Electroencephalogram measurements were determined before and after tasks were performed by each group. For the statistical analysis, a two-way ANOVA was performed for the factors group and time. Interactions between the two factors were investigated using a one-way ANOVA. A value of p 0.004 was considered significant. The results showed an increase in alpha absolute power in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and upper left parietal cortex of the PNF group, suggesting these areas work together to execute a motor action. The PNF group showed a greater alpha absolute power compared with the other groups, indicating a specific cortical demand for planning and attention, reinforcing its use for the rehabilitation of individuals.

Encoding models can reveal and decode neural representations in the visual and semantic domains. However, a thorough understanding of how distributed information in auditory cortices and temporal evolution of music contribute to model performance is still lacking in the musical domain. We measured fMRI responses during naturalistic music listening and constructed a two-stage approach that first mapped musical features in auditory cortices and then decoded novel musical pieces. We then probed the influence of stimuli duration (number of time points) and spatial extent (number of voxels) on decoding accuracy. Our approach revealed a linear increase in accuracy with duration and a point of optimal model performance for the spatial extent. We further showed that Shannon entropy is a driving factor, boosting accuracy up to 95% for music with highest information content. These findings provide key insights for future decoding and reconstruction algorithms and open new venues for possible clinical applications.

Spatial working memory has been extensively investigated with different tasks, treatments, and analysis tools. Several studies suggest that low frequency of the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the parietal cortex may influence spatial working memory (SWM). However, it is not yet known if after low-frequency rTMS applied to the superior parietal cortex, according to Pz electroencephalography (EEG) electrode, would change the orientation interpretation about the vertical and horizontal axes coordinates in an SWM task. The current study aims at filling this gap and obtains a better understanding of the low-frequency rTMS effect in SWM. In this crossover study, we select 20 healthy subjects in two conditions (control and 1-Hz rTMS). The subjects performed an SWM task with two random coordinates. A Interface cérebro-computador (ICC) é uma técnica que utiliza sinais elétricos que podem ser detectados do escalpo, da superfície cortical, ou de áreas subcorticais cerebrais para ativar dispositivos externos tais como computadores, interruptores ou próteses, permitindo que os usuários consigam comunicar-se como o mundo exterior. O objetivo deste estudo foi relacionar conceitos e princípios básicos do ICC destacando alguns dos avanços experimentais mais recentes que podem se tornar aplicações clínicas viáveis no futuro relacionadas à reabilitação de pacientes severamente limitados. Os estudos demonstraram que existem atualmente duas aplicações importantes de um sistema de ICC, a promoção de um novo canal de comunicação e a restauração de funções motoras através da utilização de neuropróteses. Esses estudos apontam o método invasivo como o mais indicado para o controle de neuropróteses. O panorama da restauração de funções motoras tende a crescer bastante nos próximos anos, fato atribuído a grande demanda de questões que ainda permanecem sem resposta e que vem sendo incessantemente investigadas.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in beta band absolute power in cortical areas, before and after a condition of hand immobilization for 48 hours. METHOD: Fifteen healthy volunteers, aged between 20 and 30, were submitted to EEG assessment before and after immobilization, while performing a motor task triggered by a visual stimulus. RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed that hand immobilization caused changes in cortical areas. Significant increases in beta band absolute power were found after hand immobilization at electrodes Fp2, C3 and P4. In contrast, at electrode C4 a decrease in beta band absolute power occurred after hand immobilization. CONCLUSION: Predominant hand immobilization, even for 48 hours, is sufficient to cause cortical changes that affect movement planning. Such changes may represent a cortical strategy to supply cortical changes in contralateral hemisphere due to immobilization. Further studies are necessary to understand cortical changes due to hand immobilization and movement planning, especially considering how much time of immobilization is necessary to promote such changes. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar mudanças na potencia absoluta da banda beta em áreas corticais, antes e depois de uma condição de imobilização da mão por 48 horas. MÉTODO: Quinze voluntários saudáveis, com idades entre 20 e 30 anos, foram submetidos à avaliação EEG antes e depois da imobilização, durante a execução de uma tarefa motora desencadeada por um estímulo visual. RESULTADOS: A análise estatística revelou que a imobilização da mão causou mudanças em áreas corticais. Um aumento significativo na potencia absoluta da banda beta foi encontrado após imobilização da mão nos eletrodos Fp2 (F (1,3823) = 4,147; p = 0,042), C3 (F (1,3563) = 5,005; p = 0,025) e P4 (F (1,3290) = 5,114; p = 0,024). No C4 eletrodo (F (1,3657) = 11,858; p = 0,001) uma diminuição da potencia absoluta da banda beta ocorreu após imobilização da mão. CONCLUSÃO: A imobilização da mão predominante, mesmo para 48 horas, é suficiente para causar alterações corticais que afetam o planejamento movimento. Tais mudanças podem representar uma estratégia cortical para fornecer alterações corticais em hemisfério contralateral devido à imobilização. Mais estudos são necessários para entender as mudanças corticais devido a imobilização da mão e planejamento do movimento, especialmente considerando quanto tempo de imobilização é necessário para promover essas mudanças.

Product certification can be the most complex and exhausting product development task. Compliance with technical standards must be taken into account during the whole development process, aiming the product approval by national quality and metrology laboratories and registering it on to the national healthcare authority. This article presents a case study concerning visual and audio alarms implementation for a cerebral function monitor (TiEEG) to be used in intensive care units, which must be in conformity to the Brazilian National Standards Organization version of International Electrotechnical Commission standards concerning multifunction monitors, electrocardiographic monitors and general alarm system standards. This case study is part of the process of obtaining National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology certification, demanded by the Brazilian Healthcare Surveillance Agency for product registration. In this context, a method to study and comply with the standards is introduced, as well as the issues on adopting them, and to the equipment interface with the alarm system. Furthermore, since it is a product aiming the health industry complex, aspects related to its commercialization in the local market such as usability and acceptance by the health professionals were also considered.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is one of the first choices for diagnosis of epilepsy, and in some cases this exam should be performed over long periods of time. A cerebral function monitor device aids this long term monitoring and consequently the diagnosis of epilepsy. However, EEG generates a large amount of data to be analyzed, which complicates and slows the diagnostic process. In order to speed up and facilitate this process, a method of data reduction known as amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) is currently used, which shows EEG trends over long periods of time. Hilbert aEEG (HaEEG) is another method of EEG reduction, which uses Hilbert transform for envelope acquisition during the reduction process. This work aims to compare aEEG and HaEEG. This comparison was performed using central (C3, C4), parietal (P3, P4) and temporal (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6) derivations from seizure-containing records, a comparison was made between aEEG and HaEEG. Both methods highlighted seizures in relation to background activity, indicating that both can be used in EEG reduction from patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
