PurposeThis paper questions the change in patterns of use of the balcony during lockdown. It investigates whether residents, specifically of apartment buildings in Cairo, used their balconies more frequently or for different activities during the lockdown.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted through a mixed methods approach. More specifically, a sequential explanatory design was adopted where quantitative data were collected at first followed by qualitative data collection. The study proceeded in two stages. First, an online questionnaire with 160 respondents was conducted to depict the change in the frequency and use patterns of balconies pre/post lockdown in Cairo. The respondents were approached through snowball sampling. Second, in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 participants, approached through convenience sampling, were done. The interviews aimed to provide interpretation and rationale for the responses, patterns and correlations identified from the questionnaire results.FindingsThe findings of this study confirm that there is a change in the pattern of use of balconies in terms of frequency and the types of hosted activities. The analysis revealed three key ideas that characterize those changes: the balcony as a found space, as a loose space and as a space of self-expression at home. It also expands on spatial qualities of balconies that promoted their use. The study emphasizes the significance of such outdoor private spaces in apartment buildings and puts forward balconies as an essential element of future dwellings design for the multiple benefits they behold.Originality/valueThe originality of the study stems from tackling such a timely and unprecedented situation, where still few studies investigating the relationship between pandemic and the architecture of homes have been conducted. Furthermore, this study focuses particularly on exploring the use of balconies in Cairo, one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East, during lockdown. Its findings might ultimately help formulate, define and characterize new trends in the architecture of homes that would embrace human needs in times of prosperity and rising tensions alike.

In 2020, COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 45–84 years (Woolf 325:123–124, 2021). However, systemic inequities and disparities exacerbated the pandemic’s effect on racial and ethnic groups (Tai 72:703–706, 2021). The exact impact of the pandemic within the Middle Eastern North African (MENA) community is not well documented or understood due to the lack of federal recognition of MENAs as an ethnic group. Given the lack of COVID-19 research among this community, this study was created to address COVID-19 needs, perceptions, and health-seeking behaviors regarding COVID-19 precautions, mask wearing, and routine healthcare appointments. Between June and July 2020, an anonymous survey was distributed in English and Arabic using a Community Participatory Based Research design in Dearborn, Michigan. Overall, 298 individuals were surveyed and their misconceptions regarding COVID-19 infections, spread, and precautions were identified. It is important to note that about 75% of survey respondents identified as female, while only 24% of survey participants identified as male. Survey participants slightly underestimated the distance in which COVID-19 can be transmitted as 5.5 ± 3.5. Participants severely underestimated COVID-19 deaths in the US, with 23% estimating that under 250,000 individuals would die from COVID-19. Overall, 60% of participants reported that they did not have any difficulty adhering to COVID-19 precautions and self-quarantine rules during Ramadan, while this number dropped to only 36% (87/238) after Ramadan. The goal of this study was to serve as a tool to better understand the misconceptions, difficulties, and needs regarding COVID-19 among this understudied population. The MENA community may be particularly vulnerable to the economic, medical, and social changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for reverse osmosis (RO) have become a significant target in various research. Herein, cellulose acetate membranes (CA) with Linde Type A (LTA) Zeolite Nanoparticles (ZNPs) were investigated as MMMs using the dry–wet phase inversion technique. Different percentages of LTA ZNPs were added to study their effect on the prepared MMMs. The hydrophilicity was studied by contact angle measurement. In addition, the performance of the MMMs was investigated through the RO unit cell using 10,000 ppm NaCl solution. It was shown that the salt rejection was found to be 86.8%, with a permeate water flux of 1.78 L/m2 h at 10 bar with 0.09 g of ZNPs compared with the pristine CA membrane which had a 96.5% salt rejection with a permeate water flux of 1 L/m2 h. On the other hand, the highest salt rejection obtained by this nanocomposite was 95.5% with 0.07 g ZNPs and permeate water flux of 1.3 L/m2 h.

Nanotoxicology is argued and considered one of the emerging topics. In this study, polyaniline (PANI)/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) capped silver nanoparticles (NPs)/graphene oxide (GO) quantum dots (QDs) nanocomposite (PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC) as a nanoadsorbent has a potential for removal of toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions from water. The acute toxicity of this NC was evaluated on Artemia salina and freshwater Ostracods (Cypridopsis vidua) larvae for 48 h. The measurements were made at 24 and 48 h with 3 repetitions. The 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of the NC were determined after the exposure of these organisms. According to the results of the optical microscope, it was found that both experimental organisms intake the NC. In the toxicity results of Ostracods, the NC had a highly toxic effect only at 250 mg/L after 48 h and the EC50 value was 157.6 ± 6.4 mg/L. For Artemia salina individuals, it was noted that they were less sensitive than the Ostracods and EC50 value was 476 ± 25.1 mg/L after 48 h. These results indicated that PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC has low toxicity towards both investigated organisms.

Over the last few decades, the concept of combining education and entertainment has become increasingly popular. Edutainment (education and entertainment) environments started appearing in 1970 and have expanded, ever since, across the globe. This study seeks to explore the perception of guardians towards the edutainment experience and its impact on their children, with special reference to Kidzania’s branch in Cairo, Egypt. The study adopted an interpretive qualitative approach that combines different data gathering methods, including informal discussions, in-depth semi-structured interviews, on-site sketches, observation, field notes, photographs, and archival sources. The number of guardians involved in the study was 12, accompanying 23 children. A thematic analysis of the data revealed two important overarching themes: qualities of the edutainment environment, and the factors affecting the interaction between guardians and children. The first theme, qualities of the edutainment environment, includes three categories: safe environment, exploratory environment, and well-maintained environment. The second theme, factors affecting the interaction between guardians and children, encompasses three categories: physical proximity, visual connectivity, and provision of basic amenities. The findings of the study were discussed in light of relevant previous accounts and studies. In its conclusion, the study confirms that such edutainment environments can be considered as significant informal educational play settings in which children learn valuable life skills, complementing those learned in formal learning environments. Such findings are expected to provide useful insights that could inform different initiatives aiming to create thriving edutainment centers and engaging informal learning environments.

Selective determination of toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a stringent important due to its huge negative impact on the health and environment. Recently, the high sensitivity, rapidness, and cost-effectiveness of the fluorescent sensors for Cr(VI) have been developed. A fluorescent nanocomposite (NC) has been synthesized based on doped polyaniline (PANI), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) capped Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene oxide (GO) quantum dots (QDs) via in situ reaction for highly selective sensing of Cr(VI) ions based on the luminescent quenching in the range from 0.01 to 7.5 mg/L. This NC showed an emission peak at 348 nm with a linear range from 0.01 to 0.05 mg/L and the low limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0065 mg/L (~ 6 µg/L). PANI/Ag (AMPSA) GO QDs NC displayed high selectivity for Cr(VI) over other common metal ions. Notably, the PANI/Ag (AMPSA) GO QDs NC can be used for distinguishing Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in solutions. The sensitive determination of Cr(VI) in real surface water samples was also confirmed and demonstrated recoveries in the range 95.3–99.2%. This NC will emerge as a new class of fluorescence materials that could be suitable for practical applications.

Surface science such as superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surfaces plays a sensitive function in a separating oil/water mixture as a result of increasing industrial oil and organic solvents drainage occurrence. In this work, copper hydroxide nanoneedles layer were synthesized onto Egyptian cotton fabrics (CF) treated with polydopamine, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and Cu NPs via facile immersion process. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to investigate the functionalized surface of CF with copper hydroxide layer. SEM images confirmed that the modified membranes were rougher compared with pure surface of CF. The contact angle measurement emphasized the hydrophobicity of the modified membranes and it was found that the water contact angle has a value of 168°. The absorption capacity of the modified CF membrane was 10.1 g g − 1 for diesel oil and the separation efficiency of this modified surface was higher than 99%. It was noted that the flux in the case of low viscosity solvent as n-hexane was 72,172.9 Lm− 2 h− 1, while for the viscous oil as diesel was 14,460.3 Lm− 2 h− 1.

Among various photoinduced hydrogen gas production techniques, photochemical catalytic water splitting is promising and an ideal future energy source because of the low cost, stability, and high sustainability of the reaction system features. Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (NPS) as a photocatalyst for the splitting of water into hydrogen gas using solar energy is one of the noble missions of material science. In this work, pure aluminum oxide and L-methionine capped aluminum oxide NPs have been synthesized using the sol-gel method. The pure Al2O3 and capped Al2O3 NPs with L-methionine were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Zeta potential. It was found that the average particle sizes of Al2O3 NPs and capped Al2O3 NPs with L-methionine were 13 and 20 nm, respectively. L-methionine capped Al2O3 NPs had a higher negative charge with a potential of - 24.5 mV. The capping agent slightly improved the production of hydrogen from 44 to 60 ml at 75° C after 30 min under illumination.

Herein, fabrication of cellulose acetate (CA) silica-based nanocomposite membranes via the dry-wet phase inversion procedure for the water desalination was investigated. The modified and unmodified silica nanoparticles (SNPs and MSNPs) were prepared by the sol-gel technique. The addition effect of the SNPs and MSNPs was investigated on the CA membranes properties and their performance for water separation. The CA nanocomposite membranes were characterized to study their structure, hydrophilicity, and morphology. The fabricated nanocomposite membranes showed hydrophilic surface properties. The performance of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was measured using a crossflow RO unit. At 10 bar, The membrane with 10 mg of SNPs showed enhanced permeate water flux compared to the pristine CA membrane by 1.6 L/m 2 .hr. Increasing the SNPs in the nanocomposite membrane showed enhancement in the permeate water flux all over the operating pressure. The effect of MSNPs on the nanocomposites’ performance was lower than their counterpart in the case of adding SNPs. The membrane with 30 mg of MSNPs showed the highest permeate water flux among other nanocomposite membranes with a value of 35.7 L/m 2 .hr at 24 bar.

Quantum dots (QDs) with photostability show a potential application in optical sensing and biological imaging. In this work, ternary nanocomposite (NC) of high fluorescent polyaniline (PANI)/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) capped silver nanoparticles (NPs)/graphene oxide quantum dots (PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs) have been synthesized by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of Ag (AMPSA) NPs and GO QDs. Ag (AMPSA) NPs and GO QDs were prepared by AgNO3 chemical reduction and glucose carbonization methods, respectively. The prepared materials were characterized using UV-visible, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopies, X-Ray diffractometer (XRD) and high- resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). HRTEM micrographs confirmed the preparation of GO QDs with an average size of 15 nm and Ag (AMPSA) NPs with an average size of 20 nm. PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC showed high and stable emission peak at 348 nm. This PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC can emerge as a new class of fluorescence materials that could be suitable for practical sensing applications.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the histological structure of the tongue in Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) and its related to the feeding pattern. Five adult animals were used in this study. The tongues were dissected and fixed in 10% formalin, then prepared by following stages (dehydration, clearing, and embedding). The serial section(5μ) were stained with(H&E) and some special stains. The histological examination showed that the tongue consists of three tunicae (mucosa, submucosa and musclaris) and the lining epithelium of the filiform papillae is composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue. The cylindrical papillae are covered with a highly keratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue, whereas the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium tissue is weakly keratinized at fungiform papillae, whilst circumvallate papillae are non-keratinized. The medullary of the papillae consists of a loose connective tissue which is considered as the lamina propria of the tongue, while the tunica submucosa consists of dense connective tissue. The muscularis is composed of skeletal muscle fibres arranged in three direction longitudinal, transverse and obliquate. The lingual glands(Von-Ebner and Weber) placed on both sides of the lingual root at the tunica submucosa and extend to the tunica muscularis. This study pointed out that the secretion of glands is mixed and the mucin is more neutral than acid.

Ethnopharmacological relevance The fruits of Nandina domestica Thunb. have served as folk medicines in Chinese and Japanese tradition for treatment of several tumors including pharynx tumor and tooth abscess for many years, yet its exact mechanism of action is not yet known. Aim of the study The study targets the identification of the main constituents of the fruits extracts and investigation of their mode of action in cancer therapy via pharmacology-based analysis and molecular docking. Materials and methods The different extracts of N. domestica Thunb. were analyzed via UPLC–MS/MS for identification of their active constituents. STITCH, DAVID, KEGG and STRING database were utilized for construction of compound-target and compound-target-pathway networks using Cytoscape 3.2.1. Molecular docking analysis of the top hit compounds was performed against the identified top hit molecular targets in the constructed networks. In vitro-testing of Nandina domestica Thunb. against colorectal cancer cell lines was carried out and correlated to the chemical profile of the extract to identify important biomarkers. The ADME properties of the active compounds were also evaluated. Results 22 compounds were identified by UPLC–MS/MS analysis and were forwarded to network pharmacology-based analysis. Results showed the enrichment of 5 compounds and 4 molecular targets in the network namely; AKT1, CASP3, MAPK1 and TP53. The pathway analysis of the identified targets revealed that 15 cancer-related pathways were enriched including colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer and small-cell lung cancer. In-vitro testing of the extracts against colo-rectal cancer cell lines revealed the fractions enriched in the identified hit compounds were indeed the most active as revealed from the HCA-heat-map. ADME results showed that all compounds were drug-like candidates showing acceptable values according to Lipinski's rule. Conclusions Network pharmacology analysis revealed that the compounds isoquercitrin, quercitrin, berberine, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid showed strong synergistic interactions with the cancer-related targets and pathways. It could be concluded that N. domestica Thunb. constituents affect both apoptosis and Akt-signaling pathways during the stages of early and intermediate adenoma through interaction with the targets CASP3 and MAPK1 (ErC2) while during the stages of late adenoma and carcinoma, the compounds acts through the p53 and ErbB signaling pathways.

We compute the covariance function of the solution to the linear stochastic wave equation with fractional noise in time and white noise in space. We apply our findings to analyze the correlation structure of this Gaussian process and to study the asymptotic behavior in distribution of its spatial quadratic variation. As an application, we construct a consistent estimator for the Hurst parameter.

Superficial incisional surgical site infection (SSI) is a common postoperative complication in surgical patients. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive power of an assessment scale for identifying patients at risk of superficial incisional SSI. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Department of Surgery at the Medical Research Institute Hospital, Alexandria University. A sample of 150 adult patients aged from 18 to 65 years, who undergoing general surgeries that had clean sutured surgical wounds, was randomly selected. Forty-six patients (30.7%) had SSI. The total score can significantly discriminate between positive and negative superficial incisional SSI patients with diagnostic accuracy of AUC (SE) = 0.66 (0.048). Each score more than the cutoff point (11.5) will increase the risk of surgical site infection development by 2.5 times (OR (95% CI) = 2.5 (1.26–3.1)). The developed assessment scale can discriminate between patients who are at risk of superficial incisional SSI and those who are not. It can be used as a preliminary screening tool for subsequent investigation for the presence of infection.

We study the asymptotic behavior of the spatial quadratic variation for the solution to the stochastic wave equation driven by additive space-time white noise. We prove that the sequence of its renormalized quadratic variations satisfies a central limit theorem (CLT for short). We obtain the rate of convergence for this CLT via the Stein–Malliavin calculus and we also discuss some consequences.

We report a term female neonate with vertebral anomalies, anal and urethral atresia, esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), renal agenesis, pulmonary hypoplasia, genital and sacral appendages, and a single umbilical artery. Genetic studies revealed a 20.91 Mb interstitial deletion of the long arm of X chromosome: Xq25-q27.3. This is a new case of VATER/VACTERL association with Xq25 microdeletion.
