Search

We compute and apply the minimum spanning tree (MST) of the binary millisecond pulsar population, and discuss aspects of the known phenomenology of these systems in this context. We find that the MST effectively separates different classes of spider pulsars, eclipsing radio pulsars in tight binary systems either with a companion with a mass in the range of approximately 0.1-0.8 solar masses (redbacks) or with a companion of less than or approximately 0.06 solar masses (black widows), into distinct branches. The MST also separates black widows located in globular clusters from those found in the field and groups other pulsar classes of interest, including transitional millisecond pulsars. Using the MST and a defined ranking for similarity, we identify possible candidates likely to belong to these pulsar classes. In particular, based on this approach, we propose the black widows' classification of J1300+1240, J1630+3550, J1317-0157, J1221-0633, J1627+3219, J1737-0314A, and J1701-3006F, discuss that of J1908+2105, and analyze J1723-2837, J1431-4715, and J1902-5105 as possible transitional systems. We introduce an algorithm that quickly locates where new pulsars fall within the MST and use this to examine the positions of the transitional millisecond pulsar IGR J18245-2452 (PSR J1824-2452I), the transitional millisecond pulsar candidate 3FGL J1544.6-1125, and the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. Almost all accreting black hole and neutron star X-ray binary systems (XRBs) exhibit prominent brightness variations on a few characteristic time-scales and their harmonics. These quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are thought to be associated with the precession of a warped accretion disc, but the physical mechanism that generates the precessing warp remains uncertain. Relativistic frame dragging (Lense-Thirring precession) is one promising candidate, but a misaligned magnetic field is an alternative, especially for neutron star XRBs. Here, we report the discovery of 5 accreting white dwarf systems (AWDs) that display strong optical QPOs with characteristic frequencies and harmonic structures that suggest they are the counterpart of the QPOs seen in XRBs. Since AWDs are firmly in the classical (non-relativistic) regime, Lense-Thirring precession cannot account for these QPOs. By contrast, a weak magnetic field associated with the white dwarf can drive disc warping and precession in these systems, similar to what has been proposed for neutron star XRBs. Our observations confirm that magnetically driven warping is a viable mechanism for generating QPOs in disc-accreting astrophysical systems, certainly in AWDs and possibly also in (neutron star) XRBs. CXOU J110926.4-650224 is a candidate transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) with X-ray and radio emission properties reminiscent of those observed in confirmed tMSPs in their X-ray 'subluminous' disc state. We present the results of observing campaigns that, for the first time, characterise the optical and near-infrared variability of this source and establish a connection with the mode-switching phenomenon observed in X-rays. The optical emission exhibited flickering activity, frequent dipping episodes where it appeared redder, and a multi-peaked flare where it was bluer. The variability pattern was strongly correlated with that of the X-ray emission. Each dip matched an X-ray low-mode episode, indicating that a significant portion of the optical emission originates from nearly the same region as the X-ray emission. The near-infrared emission also displayed remarkable variability, including a dip of 20 min in length during which it nearly vanished. Time-resolved optical spectroscopic observations reveal significant changes in the properties of emission lines from the disc and help infer the spectral type of the companion star to be between K0 and K5. We compare the properties of CXOU J110926.4-650224 with those of other tMSPs in the X-ray subluminous disc state and discuss our findings within the context of a recently proposed scenario that explains the phenomenology exhibited by the prototypical tMSP PSR J1023+0038., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. We present the first X-ray observation of the energetic millisecond pulsar binary PSR J1431-4715, performed with XMM-Newton and complemented with fast optical multi-band photometry acquired with the ULTRACAM instrument at ESO-NTT. It is found as a faint X-ray source without a significant orbital modulation. This contrasts with the majority of systems that instead display substantial X- ray orbital variability. The X-ray spectrum is dominated by non-thermal emission and, due to the lack of orbital modulation, does not favour an origin in an intrabinary shock between the pulsar and companion star wind. While thermal emission from the neutron star polar cap cannot be excluded in the soft X-rays, the dominance of synchrotron emission favours an origin in the pulsar magnetosphere that we describe at both X-ray and gamma-ray energies with a synchro-curvature model. The optical multi-colour light curve folded at the 10.8h orbital period is double-humped, dominated by ellipsoidal effects, but also affected by irradiation. The ULTRACAM light curves are fit with several models encompassing direct heating and a cold spot, or heat redistribution after irradiation either through convection or convection plus diffusion. Despite the inability to constrain the best irradiation models, the fits provide consistent system parameters, giving an orbital inclination of 59$\pm$6deg and a distance of 3.1$\pm$0.3 kpc. The companion is found to be an F-type star, underfilling its Roche lobe ( f_RL = 73$\pm$4%), with a mass of 0.20$\pm$0.04 M_sun, confirming the redback status, although hotter than the majority of redbacks. The stellar dayside and nightside temperatures of 7500K and 7400K, respectively, indicate a weak irradiation effect on the companion, likely due to its high intrinsic luminosity. W2 (CXOGlb J002415.8-720436) is a cataclysmic variable (CV) in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Its modulation was discovered within the CATS@BAR project. The source shows all the properties of magnetic CVs, but whether it is a polar or an intermediate polar is still a matter of debate. This paper investigates the spectral and temporal properties of the source, using all archival X-ray data from Chandra and eROSITA Early Data Release, to establish whether the source falls within the category of polars or intermediate polars. We fitted Chandra archival spectra with three different models: a power law, a bremsstrahlung and an optically thin thermal plasma. We also explored the temporal properties of the source with searches for pulsations with a power spectral density analysis and a Rayleigh test ($Z_n^2$). W2 displays a mean luminosity of $\sim 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ over a 20-year span, despite lower values in a few epochs. The source is not detected in the latest observation, taken with Chandra in 2022, and we infer an X-ray luminosity $\leq 7 \times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The source spectral shape does not change over time and can be equally well fitted with each of the three models, with a best-fit photon index of 1.6 for the power law and best-fit temperatures of 10 keV for both the bremsstrahlung and the thermal plasma models. We confirm the previously detected period of 8649 s, ascribed to the binary orbital period, and found a cycle-to-cycle variability associated with this periodicity. No other significant pulsation is detected. Considering the source orbital period, luminosity, spectral characteristics, long-term evolution and strong cycle-to-cycle variability, we suggest that W2 is a magnetic CV of the polar type., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Overflow metabolism is a ubiquitous phenomenon whereby cells in aerobic conditions excrete byproducts of glycolysis, such as lactate or acetate, into the medium in a seemingly wasteful and polluting fashion. Whilst overflow may confer microbes a fitness advantage by allowing them to overcome a finite oxidative capacity, its occurrence in higher organisms is harder to assess. Important insight was however obtained in recent experiments conducted at single-cell resolution, which revealed that accumulation of overflow products in tumor cell cultures known as the Warburg effect arises from imbalances in the dynamic and heterogeneous inter-cellular exchange network through which cells collectively regulate the microenvironment. Here we provide a quantitative characterization of this scenario by integrating metabolic network modeling with diffusion constraints, statistical physics theory and single-cell experimental flux data. On the theoretical side, we clarify how diffusion-limited exchanges shape the space of viable metabolic states of a multi-cellular system. Specifically, a phase transition from a balanced network of exchanges to an unbalanced overflow regime occurs as the mean cellular glucose and oxygen uptakes vary while single-cell metabolic phenotypes are highly heterogeneous around this transition. We then show that time-resolved data from human tumor-stroma cell co-cultures consistently map to this crossover region, supporting the idea that environmental deterioration reflects a failure of coordination among recurrently interacting cells. In summary, our findings suggest that, rather than deriving from multiple independent cell-autonomous processes, environmental control is an emergent feature of multi-cellular systems., Comment: Main(14 pages)+ supporting information(14 pages). We report on spin variations in the intermediate polar and cataclysmic variable CC Scl, as seen by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). By studying both the spin period and its harmonic, we find that the spin has varied since it was first observed in 2011. We find the latest spin value for the source to be 389.473(6)s, equivalent to 0.00450779(7) days, 0.02s shorter than the first value measured. A linear fit to these and intermediate data give a rate of change of spin ~-4.26(2.66)e10^-11 and a characteristic timescale tau~2.90e10^5 years, in line with other known intermediate polars with varying spin. The spin profile of this source also matches theoretical spin profiles of high-inclination intermediate polars, and furthermore, appears to have changed in shape over a period of three years. Such `spin-up' in an intermediate polar is considered to be from mass accretion onto the white dwarf (the primary), and we note the presence of dwarf nova eruptions in this source as being a possible catalyst of the variations., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures. The classical nova CP Puppis has been observed to have particularly puzzling and peculiar properties. In particular, this classical nova displays occasional bursts in its long-term ASAS-SN light curve. Here we report on 5 sectors of TESS data displaying 2 of these rapid bursts, lasting ~1 day. Based on the estimated lower energy limits of the bursts we discuss whether the bursts may be examples of micronovae resulting from localised thermonuclear explosion. Furthermore, its orbital period remains uncertain, with several inconsistent periodic signals appearing in spectroscopic and photometric observations at various wavelengths. Although we cannot unambiguously unravel the physical origin of the signals, the previously suggested nature of CP Puppis as a long orbital period system may be a viable explanation. The recurrence time of the bursts in CP Puppis, together with the unexplained variable modulations make it a prime candidate for intense monitoring., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Transitional millisecond pulsars are an emerging class of sources that link low-mass X-ray binaries to millisecond radio pulsars in binary systems. These pulsars alternate between a radio pulsar state and an active low-luminosity X-ray disc state. During the active state, these sources exhibit two distinct emission modes (high and low) that alternate unpredictably, abruptly, and incessantly. X-ray to optical pulsations are observed only during the high mode. The root cause of this puzzling behaviour remains elusive. This paper presents the results of the most extensive multi-wavelength campaign ever conducted on the transitional pulsar prototype, PSR J1023+0038, covering from the radio to X-rays. The campaign was carried out over two nights in June 2021 and involved 12 different telescopes and instruments, including XMM-Newton, HST, VLT/FORS2 (in polarimetric mode), ALMA, VLA, and FAST. By modelling the broadband spectral energy distributions in both emission modes, we show that the mode switches are caused by changes in the innermost region of the accretion disc. These changes trigger the emission of discrete mass ejections, which occur on top of a compact jet, as testified by the detection of at least one short-duration millimetre flare with ALMA at the high-to-low mode switch. PSR J1023+0038 is the first millisecond pulsar that was ever observed as an optical and UV pulsar. So far, it is the only optical transitional millisecond pulsar. The rotation- and accretion-powered emission mechanisms hardly individually explain the observed characteristics of optical pulsations. A synergistic model, combining these standard emission processes, was proposed to explain the origin of the X-ray/UV/optical pulsations. We study the phase lag between the pulses in the optical and X-ray bands to gain insight into the physical mechanisms that cause it. We performed a detailed timing analysis of simultaneous or quasi-simultaneous observations in the X-ray band, acquired with the XMM-Newton and NICER satellites, and in the optical band, with the fast photometers SiFAP2 (mounted at the 3.6 m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo) and Aqueye+ (mounted at the 1.8 m Copernicus Telescope). We estimated the time lag of the optical pulsation with respect to that in the X-rays by modeling the folded pulse profiles with two harmonic components. Optical pulses lag the X-ray pulses by $\sim$ 150 $\mu$s in observations acquired with instruments (NICER and Aqueye+) whose absolute timing uncertainty is much smaller than the measured lag. We also show that the phase lag between optical and X-ray pulsations lies in a limited range of values, $\delta \phi \in$ (0 $-$ 0.15), which is maintained over timescales of about five years. This indicates that both pulsations originate from the same region, and it supports the hypothesis of a common emission mechanism. Our results are interpreted in the shock-driven mini pulsar nebula scenario. This scenario suggests that optical and X-ray pulses are produced by synchrotron emission from the shock that formed within a few light cylinder radii away ($\sim$ 100 km) from the pulsar, where its striped wind encounters the accretion disk inflow., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We observed the periodic radio transient GLEAM-X J162759.5-523504.3 (GLEAM-X J1627) using the Chandra X-ray Observatory for about 30-ks on January 22-23, 2022, simultaneously with radio observations from MWA, MeerKAT and ATCA. Its radio emission and 18-min periodicity led the source to be tentatively interpreted as an extreme magnetar or a peculiar highly magnetic white dwarf. The source was not detected in the 0.3-8 keV energy range with a 3-sigma upper-limit on the count rate of 3x10^{-4} counts/s. No radio emission was detected during our X-ray observations either. Furthermore, we studied the field around GLEAM-X J1627 using archival ESO and DECam data, as well as recent SALT observations. Many sources are present close to the position of GLEAM-X J1627, but only two within the 2" radio position uncertainty. Depending on the assumed spectral distribution, the upper limits converted to an X-ray luminosity of L_{X}<6.5x10^{29} erg/s for a blackbody with temperature kT=0.3 keV, or L_{X}<9x10^{29} erg/s for a power-law with photon index Gamma = 2 (assuming a 1.3 kpc distance). Furthermore, we performed magneto-thermal simulations for neutron stars considering crust- and core-dominated field configurations. Based on our multi-band limits, we conclude that: i) in the magnetar scenario, the X-ray upper limits suggest that GLEAM-X J1627 should be older than ~1 Myr, unless it has a core-dominated magnetic field or has experienced fast-cooling; ii) in the white dwarf scenario, we can rule out most binary systems, a hot sub-dwarf and a hot magnetic isolated white dwarf (T>10.000 K), while a cold isolated white dwarf is still compatible with our limits., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures; ApJ accepted

We present a spectroscopic survey of 248 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun; of these 244 are in the southern hemisphere. Observations were performed mostly with the Very Large Telescope (X-Shooter) and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope. Almost all candidates were selected from $\textit{Gaia}$ Data Release 3 (DR3). We find a total of 246 confirmed white dwarfs, 209 of which had no previously published spectra, and two main-sequence star contaminants. Of these, 100 white dwarfs display hydrogen Balmer lines, 69 have featureless spectra, and two show only neutral helium lines. Additionally, 14 white dwarfs display traces of carbon, while 37 have traces of other elements that are heavier than helium. We observe 36 magnetic white dwarfs through the detection of Zeeman splitting of their hydrogen Balmer or metal spectral lines. High spectroscopic completeness (> 97 per cent) has now been reached, such that we have 1058 confirmed $\textit{Gaia}$ DR3 white dwarfs out of 1083 candidates within 40 pc of the Sun at all declinations., Comment: 49 pages, 19 figures. Rapid bursts at optical wavelengths have been reported for several accreting white dwarfs, where the optical luminosity can increase by up to a factor 30 in less than an hour fading on timescales of several hours, and where the energy release can reach $\approx10^{39}$ erg ("micronovae"). Several systems have also shown these bursts to be semi-recurrent on timescales of days to months and the temporal profiles of these bursts strongly resemble those observed in Type-I X-ray bursts in accreting neutron stars. It has been suggested that the observed micronovae may be the result of localised thermonuclear runaways on the surface layers of accreting white dwarfs. Here we propose a model where magnetic confinement of the accretion stream on to accreting magnetic white dwarfs may trigger localised thermonuclear runaways. The proposed model to trigger micronovae appears to favour magnetic systems with both high white dwarf masses and high mass-transfer rates., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Nova explosions are caused by global thermonuclear runaways triggered in the surface layers of accreting white dwarfs. It has been predicted that localised thermonuclear bursts on white dwarfs can also take place, similar to Type I X-ray bursts observed in accreting neutron stars. Unexplained rapid bursts from the binary system TV Columbae, in which mass is accreted onto a moderately-strong magnetised white dwarf from a low-mass companion, have been observed on several occasions in the past $\approx40$ years. During these bursts the optical/UV luminosity increases by a factor of $>3$ in less than an hour and fades over $\approx10$ hours. Fast outflows have been observed in UV spectral lines, with velocities $>3500$ km s$^{-1}$, comparable to the escape velocity from the white dwarf surface. Here we report on optical bursts observed in TV Columbae as well as in two additional accreting systems, EI Ursae Majoris and ASASSN-19bh. The bursts have a total energy $\approx~10^{-6}$ those of classical nova explosions ("micronovae"), and bear a strong resemblance to Type I X-ray bursts. We exclude accretion or stellar magnetic reconnection events as their origin and suggest thermonuclear runaway events in magnetically-confined accretion columns as a viable explanation., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Physical mechanisms of phase separation in living systems can play key physiological roles and have recently been the focus of intensive studies. The strongly heterogeneous and disordered nature of such phenomena in the biological domain poses difficult modeling challenges that require going beyond mean field approaches based on postulating a free energy landscape. The alternative pathway we take in this work is to tackle the full statistical mechanics problem of calculating the partition function in these systems, starting from microscopic interactions, by means of cavity methods. We illustrate the procedure first on the simple binary case, and we then apply it successfully to ternary systems, in which the naive mean field approximations are proved inadequate. We then demonstrate the agreement with lattice model simulations, to finally contrast our theory also with experiments of coacervate formation by associative de-mixing of nucleotides and poly-lysine in aqueous solution. In this way, different types of evidence are provided to support cavity methods as ideal tools for quantitative modeling of biomolecular condensation, giving an optimal balance between the accurate consideration of spatial aspects of the microscopic dynamics and the fast computational results rooted in their analytical tractability., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We report on the masses ($M_\mathrm{WD}$), effective temperatures ($T_\mathrm{eff}$) and secular mean accretion rates ($\langle \dot{M} \rangle$) of 43 cataclysmic variable (CV) white dwarfs, 42 of which were obtained from the combined analysis of their $\mathit{Hubble~Space~Telescope}$ ultraviolet data with the parallaxes provided by the Early Third Data Release of the $\mathit{Gaia}$ space mission, and one from the white dwarf gravitational redshift. Our results double the number of CV white dwarfs with an accurate mass measurement, bringing the total census to 89 systems. From the study of the mass distribution, we derive $\langle M_\mathrm{WD} \rangle = 0.81^{+0.16}_{-0.20}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$, in perfect agreement with previous results, and find no evidence of any evolution of the mass with orbital period. Moreover, we identify five systems with $M_\mathrm{WD} < 0.5\mathrm{M_\odot}$, which are most likely representative of helium-core white dwarfs, showing that these CVs are present in the overall population. We reveal the presence of an anti-correlation between the average accretion rates and the white dwarf masses for the systems below the $2-3\,$h period gap. Since $\langle \dot{M} \rangle$ reflects the rate of system angular momentum loss, this correlation suggests the presence of an additional mechanism of angular momentum loss that is more efficient at low white dwarf masses. This is the fundamental concept of the recently proposed empirical prescription of consequential angular momentum loss (eCAML) and our results provide observational support for it, although we also highlight how its current recipe needs to be refined to better reproduce the observed scatter in $T_\mathrm{eff}$ and $\langle \dot{M} \rangle$, and the presence of helium-core white dwarfs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages of main body (6 tables and 14 figures) and 54 pages of appendices. Accreting white dwarfs are often found in close binary systems with orbital periods ranging from tens of minutes to several hours. In most cases, the accretion process is relatively steady, with significant modulations only occurring on time-scales of ~days or longer. Here, we report the discovery of abrupt drops in the optical luminosity of the accreting white dwarf binary system TW Pictoris by factors up to 3.5 on time-scales as short as 30 minutes. The optical light curve of this binary system obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) clearly displays fast switches between two distinct intensity modes that likely track the changing mass accretion rate onto the white dwarf. In the low mode, the system also displays magnetically-gated accretion bursts, which implies that a weak magnetic field of the white dwarf truncates the inner disk at the co-rotation radius in this mode. The properties of the mode switching observed in TW Pictoris appear analogous to those observed in transitional millisecond pulsars, where similar transitions occur, although on timescales of ~tens of seconds. Our discovery establishes a previously unrecognised phenomenon in accreting white dwarfs and suggests a tight link to the physics governing magnetic accretion onto neutron stars., Comment: Submitted on 17 June 2021. We present the results of simultaneous observations of the transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) candidate CXOU J110926.4-650224 with the XMM-Newton satellite and the MeerKAT telescope. The source was found at an average X-ray luminosity of $L_{\rm X}\simeq7\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ over the 0.3-10 keV band (assuming a distance of 4 kpc) and displayed a peculiar variability pattern in the X-ray emission, switching between high, low and flaring modes on timescales of tens of seconds. A radio counterpart was detected at a significance of 7.9$\sigma$ with an average flux density of $\simeq$33$\mu$Jy at 1.28 GHz. It showed variability over the course of hours and emitted a $\simeq$10-min long flare just a few minutes after a brief sequence of multiple X-ray flares. No clear evidence for a significant correlated or anticorrelated variability pattern was found between the X-ray and radio emissions over timescales of tens of minutes and longer. CXOU J110926.4-650224 was undetected at higher radio frequencies in subsequent observations performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, when the source was still in the same X-ray sub-luminous state observed before, down to a flux density upper limit of 15$\mu$Jy at 7.25 GHz (at 3$\sigma$). We compare the radio emission properties of CXOU J110926.4-650224 with those observed in known and candidate tMSPs and discuss physical scenarios that may account for its persistent and flaring radio emissions., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. The physics of the non-thermal Universe provides information on the acceleration mechanisms in extreme environments, such as black holes and relativistic jets, neutron stars, supernovae or clusters of galaxies. In the presence of magnetic fields, particles can be accelerated towards relativistic energies. As a consequence, radiation along the entire electromagnetic spectrum can be observed, and extreme environments are also the most likely sources of multi-messenger emission. The most energetic part of the electromagnetic spectrum corresponds to the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray regime, which can be extensively studied with ground based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The results obtained by the current generation of IACTs, such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS, demonstrate the crucial importance of the VHE band in understanding the non-thermal emission of extreme environments in our Universe. In some objects, the energy output in gamma rays can even outshine the rest of the broadband spectrum. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation of IACTs, which, with cutting edge technology and a strategic configuration of ~100 telescopes distributed in two observing sites, in the northern and southern hemispheres, will reach better sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, and broader energy coverage than currently operational IACTs. The discovery of gravitational waves, high-energy neutrinos or the very-high-energy counterpart of gamma-ray bursts has revolutionized the high-energy and transient astrophysics community. The development of new instruments and analysis techniques will allow the discovery and/or follow-up of new transient sources. We describe the prospects for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory, for multi-messenger and transient astrophysics in the decade ahead. THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focusing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multi-wavelegth studies. We present simultaneous multiwavelength observations of the 4.66 ms redback pulsar PSR J1048+2339. We performed phase-resolved spectroscopy with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) searching for signatures of a residual accretion disk or intra-binary shock emission, constraining the companion radial velocity semi-amplitude ($K_2$), and estimating the neutron star mass ($M_{\rm NS}$). Using the FORS2-VLT intermediate-resolution spectra, we measured a companion velocity of $291 < K_2 < 348$ km s$^{-1}$ and a binary mass ratio of $0.209 < q < 0.250$. Combining our results for $K_2$ and $q$, we constrained the mass of the neutron star and the companion to $(1.0 < M_{\rm NS} < 1.6){\rm sin}^{-3}i\,M_{\odot}$ and $(0.24 < M_2 < 0.33){\rm sin}^{-3}i\,M_{\odot}$, respectively, where $i$ is the system inclination. The Doppler map of the H$\alpha$ emission line exhibits a spot feature at the expected position of the companion star and an extended bright spot close to the inner Lagrangian point. We interpret this extended emission as the effect of an intra-binary shock originating from the interaction between the pulsar relativistic wind and the matter leaving the companion star. The mass loss from the secondary star could be either due to Roche-lobe overflow or to the ablation of its outer layer by the energetic pulsar wind. Contrastingly, we find no evidence for an accretion disk. We report on the results of the SRT and the LOFAR simultaneous radio observations at three different frequencies (150 MHz, 336 MHz, and 1400 MHz). No pulsed radio signal is found in our search. This is probably due to both scintillation and the presence of material expelled from the system which can cause the absorption of the radio signal at low frequencies. Millisecond spinning, low magnetic field neutron stars are believed to attain their fast rotation in a 0.1-1 Gyr-long phase during which they accrete matter endowed with angular momentum from a low-mass companion star. Despite extensive searches, coherent periodicities originating from accreting neutron star magnetospheres have been detected only at X-ray energies and in ~10% of the presently known systems. Here we report the detection of optical and ultraviolet coherent pulsations at the X-ray period of the transient low mass X-ray binary system SAX J1808.4-3658, during an accretion outburst that occurred in August 2019. At the time of the observations, the pulsar was surrounded by an accretion disc, displayed X-ray pulsations and its luminosity was consistent with magnetically funneled accretion onto the neutron star. Current accretion models fail to account for the luminosity of both optical and ultraviolet pulsations; these are instead more likely driven by synchro-curvature radiation in the pulsar magnetosphere or just outside of it. This interpretation would imply that particle acceleration can take place even when mass accretion is going on, and opens up new perspectives in the study of coherent optical/UV pulsations from fast spinning accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binary systems., Comment: 47 pages, 9 figures. In the last 25 years, a new generation of X-ray satellites imparted a significant leap forward in our knowledge of X-ray pulsars. The discovery of accreting and transitional millisecond pulsars proved that disk accretion can spin up a neutron star to a very high rotation speed. The detection of MeV-GeV pulsed emission from a few hundreds of rotation-powered pulsars probed particle acceleration in the outer magnetosphere, or even beyond. Also, a population of two dozens of magnetars has emerged. INTEGRAL played a central role to achieve these results by providing instruments with high temporal resolution up to the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray band and a large field of view imager with good angular resolution to spot hard X-ray transients. In this article, we review the main contributions by INTEGRAL to our understanding of the pulsating hard X-ray sky, such as the discovery and characterization of several accreting and transitional millisecond pulsars, the generation of the first catalog of hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray rotation-powered pulsars, the detection of polarization in the hard X-ray emission from the Crab pulsar, and the discovery of persistent hard X-ray emission from several magnetars., Comment: Accepted for publication on New Astronomy Reviews as invited contribution

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. X-ray transients, such as accreting neutron stars, periodically undergo outbursts, thought to be caused by a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk. Usually outbursts of accreting neutron stars are identified when the accretion disk has undergone an instability, and the persistent X-ray flux has risen to a threshold detectable by all sky monitors on X-ray space observatories. Here we present the earliest known combined optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations of the outburst onset of an accreting neutron star low mass X-ray binary system. We observed a significant, continuing increase in the optical i'-band magnitude starting on July 25, 12 days before the first X-ray detection with Swift/XRT and NICER (August 6), during the onset of the 2019 outburst of SAX J1808.4-3658. We also observed a 4 day optical to X-ray rise delay, and a 2 day UV to X-ray delay, at the onset of the outburst. We present the multiwavelength observations that were obtained, discussing the theory of outbursts in X-ray transients, including the disk instability model, and the implications of the delay. This work is an important confirmation of the delay in optical to X-ray emission during the onset of outbursts in low mass X-ray binaries, which has only previously been measured with less sensitive all sky monitors. We present a spectroscopic survey of 230 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun from the William Herschel Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias. All candidates were selected from $\textit{Gaia}$ Data Release 2 (DR2) and in almost all cases had no prior spectroscopic classifications. We find a total of 191 confirmed white dwarfs and 39 main-sequence star contaminants. The majority of stellar remnants in the sample are relatively cool ($\langle T_{\rm eff} \rangle$ = 6200 K), showing either hydrogen Balmer lines or a featureless spectrum, corresponding to 89 DA and 76 DC white dwarfs, respectively. We also recover two DBA white dwarfs and 9--10 magnetic remnants. We find two carbon-bearing DQ stars and 14 new metal-rich white dwarfs. This includes the possible detection of the first ultra-cool white dwarf with metal lines. We describe three DZ stars for which we find at least four different metal species, including one which is strongly Fe- and Ni-rich, indicative of the accretion of a planetesimal with core-Earth composition. We find one extremely massive (1.31 $\pm$ 0.01 M$_{\odot}$) DA white dwarf showing weak Balmer lines, possibly indicating stellar magnetism. Another white dwarf shows strong Balmer line emission but no infrared excess, suggesting a low-mass sub-stellar companion. High spectroscopic completeness ($>$99%) has now been reached for $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 sources within 40 pc sample, in the northern hemisphere ($\delta >$ 0 deg) and located on the white dwarf cooling track in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We report on the first NuSTAR observation of the transitional millisecond pulsar binary XSS J12270-4859 during its current rotation-powered state, complemented with a 2.5yr-long radio monitoring at Parkes telescope and archival XMM-Newton and Swift X-ray and optical data. The radio pulsar is mainly detected at 1.4GHz displaying eclipses over about 40% of the 6.91h orbital cycle. We derive a new updated radio ephemeris to study the 3-79keV light curve that displays a significant orbital modulation with fractional amplitude of 28+/-3%, a structured maximum centred at the inferior conjunction of the pulsar and no cycle-to-cycle or low-high-flaring mode variabilities. The average X-ray spectrum, extending up to about 70keV without a spectral break, is well described by a simple power-law with photon index Gamma = 1.17+/-0.08 giving a 3-79keV luminosity of 7.6(-0.8;+3.8)x10**32 erg/s, for a distance of 1.37(-0.15;+0.69)kpc. Energy resolved orbital light curves reveal that the modulation is not energy dependent from 3keV to 25keV and is undetected with an upper limit of about 10% above 25keV. Comparison with previous X-ray XMM-Newton observations in common energy ranges confirms that the modulation amplitudes vary on timescales of a few months, indicative of a non-stationary contribution of the intrabinary shock formed by the colliding winds of the pulsar and the companion. A more detailed inspection of energy resolved modulations than previously reported gives hints of a mild softening at superior conjunction of the pulsar below 3keV, likely due to the contribution of the thermal emission from the neutron star. Among hard X-ray Galactic sources detected in the Swift and INTEGRAL surveys, those discovered as accreting white dwarf binaries have suprisingly boosted in number in the recent years. The majority are identified as magnetic Cataclysmic Variables of the Intermediate Polar type, suggesting this subclass as an important constituent of the Galactic population of X-ray sources. The hard X-ray source 2PBC J0658.0-1746 was proposed as an eclipsing magnetic cataclysmic variable of the polar type, based on optical follow-ups. We present the first spectral and timing analysis at X-ray energies with XMM-Newton, complemented with archival X-ray, optical, IR photometry and spectroscopy. The X-ray emission shows bright and faint phases and total eclipses recurring every 2.38 h, consistent with optical properties. This firmly identifies 2PBC J0658.0-1746 as an eclipsing polar, the second hard X-ray selected in the orbital period gap. The X-ray orbital modulation changes from cycle-to-cycle and the X-ray flux is strongly variable over the years, implying a non-stationary mass accretion rate both on short and long timescales. The X-ray eclipses allow to refine the orbital ephemeris with period 0.09913398(4) d, and to constrain the binary inclination $79^{\rm\,o}\lesssim i \lesssim 90^{\rm\,o}$ and the mass ratio 0.18$\rm

PSR J1023+0038 is the first millisecond pulsar discovered to pulsate in the visible band; such a detection took place when the pulsar was surrounded by an accretion disk and also showed X-ray pulsations. We report on the first high time resolution observational campaign of this transitional pulsar in the disk state, using simultaneous observations in the optical (TNG, NOT, TJO), X-ray (XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, NICER), infrared (GTC) and UV (Swift) bands. Optical and X-ray pulsations were detected simultaneously in the X-ray high intensity mode in which the source spends $\sim$ 70% of the time, and both disappeared in the low mode, indicating a common underlying physical mechanism. In addition, optical and X-ray pulses were emitted within a few km, had similar pulse shape and distribution of the pulsed flux density compatible with a power-law relation $F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-0.7}$ connecting the optical and the 0.3-45 keV X-ray band. Optical pulses were detected also during flares with a pulsed flux reduced by one third with respect to the high mode; the lack of a simultaneous detection of X-ray pulses is compatible with the lower photon statistics. We show that magnetically channeled accretion of plasma onto the surface of the neutron star cannot account for the optical pulsed luminosity ($\sim 10^{31}$ erg/s). On the other hand, magnetospheric rotation-powered pulsar emission would require an extremely efficient conversion of spin-down power into pulsed optical and X-ray emission. We then propose that optical and X-ray pulses are instead produced by synchrotron emission from the intrabinary shock that forms where a striped pulsar wind meets the accretion disk, within a few light cylinder radii away, $\sim$ 100 km, from the pulsar., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, first submitted to ApJ on 2019, January 18

We present a multi-band search for X-ray, optical and $\gamma$-ray emission of the radio binary millisecond pulsar J1836-2354A, hosted in the globular cluster M22. X-ray emission is significantly detected in two Chandra observations, performed in 2005 and 2014, at a luminosity of $\sim$2-3$\times$10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$, in the 0.5-8 keV energy range. The radio and the X-ray source positions are found consistent within 1$\sigma$ error box. No detection is found in archival XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observations, compatible with the Chandra flux level. The low statistics prevents us to assess if the X-ray source varied between the two observations. The X-ray spectrum is consistent with a power-law of photon index $\sim$1.5. We favour as the most probable origin of the X-ray emission an intrabinary shock scenario. We searched for optical and $\gamma$-ray counterparts to the radio source using data from Hubble Space Telescope and Fermi-LAT catalogues, respectively. No optical counterpart down to V=25.9 and I=24.7 (3$\sigma$) is detected, which suggests a companion mass of 0.1-0.2 $M_\odot$. Combined with the low X-ray luminosity, this is consistent with a black widow nature of PSR J1636-2354A. Inspecting the 8-year Fermi-LAT catalogue, we found a $\gamma$-ray source, 4FGL J1836.8-2354, with a positional uncertainty consistent with the globular cluster, but not with the radio position of the millisecond pulsar.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). Quantitative studies of cell metabolism are often based on large chemical reaction network models. A steady state approach is suited to analyze phenomena on the timescale of cell growth and circumvents the problem of incomplete experimental knowledge on kinetic laws and parameters, but it shall be supported by a correct implementation of thermodynamic constraints. In this article we review the latter aspect highlighting its computational challenges and physical insights. The simple introduction of Gibbs inequalities avoids the presence of unfeasible loops allowing for correct timescale analysis but leads to possibly non-convex feasible flux spaces, whose exploration needs efficient algorithms. Optical and X-ray observations suggested that the 9.38 h binary, SWIFT J0746.3- 1608 could be a Cataclysmic Variable of the magnetic or nova-like type, or a low mass X-ray binary. Its optical, UV, and X-ray light curves are strongly variable over years. We report on a recent XMM-Newton observation (28 April 2018), when the source had recovered from a deep low state that likely begun mid-late 2011. We detect for the first time a signal at about 38 min that we interpret as the rotation of the accreting white dwarf primary. Its amplitude decreases with increasing energy, indicating localised photoelectric absorption from cold material. The X-ray spectrum shows optically thin thermal emission with excess at the iron complex, absorbed by a dense medium partially covering the X-ray source. Based on these features, we propose that SWIFT J0746.3-1608 is a magnetic CV of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. The long-term light curves at different wavelengths show high and low states, a rare phenomenon in the IP subclass and observed so far in only three other systems. The long orbital period, the peculiar long term variability, and its proposed magnetic nature, makes SWIFT J0746.3-1608 an interesting evolutionary test case., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 6 figures, 1 table

We present high-time-resolution photometry and phase-resolved spectroscopy of the short-period ($P_\mathrm{orb} = 80.52\,\mathrm{min}$) cataclysmic variable SDSS J123813.73-033933.0, observed with the $\mathit{Hubble}$ $\mathit{Space}$ $\mathit{Telescope}$ $\mathit{(HST)}$, the $\mathit{Kepler/K2}$ mission and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We also report observations of the first detected super-outburst. SDSS J1238-0339 shows two types of variability: quasi-regular brightenings recurring every $\simeq 8.5$ h during which the system increases in brightness by $\simeq 0.5$mag, and a double hump quasi-sinusoidal modulation at the orbital period. The detailed $\mathit{K2}$ light curve reveals that the amplitude of the double-humps increases during the brightenings and that their phase undergoes a $\simeq 90^{\circ}$ phase shift with respect to the quiescent intervals. The $\mathit{HST}$ data unambiguously demonstrate that these phenomena both arise from the heating and cooling of two relatively large regions on the white dwarf. We suggest that the double-hump modulation is related to spiral shocks in the accretion disc resulting in an enhanced accretion rate heating two localised regions on the white dwarf, with the structure of the shocks fixed in the binary frame explaining the period of the double humps. The physical origin of the 8.5 h brightenings is less clear. However, the correlation between the observed variations of the amplitude and phase of the double-humps with the occurrence of the brightenings is supportive of an origin in thermal instabilities in the accretion disc., Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures. e-ASTROGAM is a concept for a breakthrough observatory space mission carrying a gamma-ray telescope dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.15 MeV to 3 GeV. The lower energy limit can be pushed down to energies as low as 30 keV for gamma-ray burst detection with the calorimeter. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with remarkable polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the most powerful Galactic and extragalactic sources, elucidating the nature of their relativistic outflows and their effects on the surroundings. With a line sensitivity in the MeV energy range one to two orders of magnitude better than previous and current generation instruments, e-ASTROGAM will determine the origin of key isotopes fundamental for the understanding of supernova explosion and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The mission will be a major player of the multiwavelength, multimessenger time-domain astronomy of the 2030s, and provide unique data of significant interest to a broad astronomical community, complementary to powerful observatories such as LISA, LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA, the Einstein Telescope and the Cosmic Explorer, IceCube-Gen2 and KM3NeT, SKA, ALMA, JWST, E-ELT, LSST, Athena, and the Cherenkov Telescope Array., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. IGR J14257-6117 is an unclassified source in the hard X-ray catalogues. Optical follow-ups suggest it could be a Cataclysmic Variable of the magnetic type. We present the first high S/N X-ray observation performed by \XMM\ at 0.3--10 keV, complemented with 10--80 keV coverage by \Swift/BAT, aimed at revealing the source nature. We detected for the first time a fast periodic variability at 509.5\,s and a longer periodic variability at 4.05\,h, ascribed to the white dwarf (WD) spin and binary orbital periods, respectively. These unambiguously identify IGR J14257-6117 as a magnetic CV of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. The energy resolved light curves at both periods reveal amplitudes decreasing with increasing energy, with the orbital modulation reaching $\sim100\%$ in the softest band. The energy spectrum shows optically thin thermal emission with an excess at the iron complex, absorbed by two dense media (${\rm N_{H}\sim10^{22-23}\,cm^{-2}}$), partially covering the X-ray source. These are likely localised in the magnetically confined accretion flow above the WD surface and at the disc rim, producing the energy dependent spin and orbital variabilities, respectively. IGR J14257-6117, joins the group of strongest orbitally modulated IPs now counting four systems. Drawing similarities with low-mass X-ray binaries displaying orbital dips, these IPs should be seen at large orbital inclinations allowing azimuthally extended absorbing material fixed in the binary frame to intercept the line of sight. For IGR J14257-6117, we estimate ($50^o\,\lesssim\,i\,\lesssim\,70^o$). We report on the first continuous, 80 day optical monitoring of the transitional millisecond pulsar PSR J1023+0038 carried out in mid-2017 with Kepler in the K2 configuration, when an X-ray subluminous accretion disk was present in the binary. Flares lasting from minutes to 14 hr were observed for 15.6% of the time, which is a larger fraction than previously reported on the basis of X-ray and past optical observations, and more frequently when the companion was at the superior conjunction of the orbit. A sinusoidal modulation at the binary orbital period was also present with an amplitude of ~16%, which varied by a few percent over timescales of days, and with a maximum that took place 890 +/- 85 s earlier than the superior conjunction of the donor. We interpret these phenomena in terms of reprocessing of the X-ray emission by an asymmetrically heated companion star surface and/or a non-axisymmetric outflow possibly launched close to the inner Lagrangian point. Furthermore, the non-flaring average emission varied by up to ~ 40% over a time scale of days in the absence of correspondingly large variations of the irradiating X-ray flux. The latter suggests that the observed changes in the average optical luminosity might be due to variations of the geometry, size, and/or mass accretion rate in the outer regions of the accretion disk., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. e-ASTROGAM (enhanced ASTROGAM) is a breakthrough Observatory space mission, with a detector composed by a Silicon tracker, a calorimeter, and an anticoincidence system, dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.3 MeV to 3 GeV - the lower energy limit can be pushed to energies as low as 150 keV for the tracker, and to 30 keV for calorimetric detection. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with polarimetric capability.
