Abstract

A partial skeleton of a pleurosternid turtle (Paracryptodira), from the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition at the Spanish locality of Ágreda (Moncayo Region, Soria Province), is presented here. Its partial skull represents the third of this lineage to be recognised in the European record, with the previously known specimens corresponding to British species. The specimen of Pleurosternidae studied here is attributed to a new species, Pleurosternon moncayensis. This lineage of stem turtles is identified as the most abundant and diverse group of freshwater aquatic turtles in Europe for the stages adjacent to the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition. Its presence decreased radically at post-Berriasian levels, when freshwater lineages of Eucryptodira, of Asian origin, are identified as the dominant forms at these aquatic turtle faunas. The confirmation of Pleurosternidae as freshwater inhabitants is made here, through the first neuroanatomical study for this lineage. Thus, the neuroanatomical reconstruction of Pleurosternon moncayensis sp. nov. is the first to be carried out for a freshwater stem turtle, and it allows us to identify convergent adaptations with freshwater members of the crown Testudines. Abstract

[Purpose]: The development of the studies on Mesozoic reptiles of the Spanish record occurred much later than in several European countries such as United Kingdom, France or Germany. Thus, very scarce and punctual findings were performed in the second half of the 19th century, followed by the work of José Royo y Gómez, which was stopped by the Spanish Civil War. The professional surveys and studies carried out in the 1950s in the Upper Cretaceous levels of the Tremp Basin (Lleida, Catalonia, Spain) can be considered as the origins of the development of this discipline in Spain. The works in the Tremp Basin were performed through the collaboration of national and foreign researchers. The Spanish palaeontologist Emiliano Aguirre and the French Albert Félix de Lapparent published some preliminary notes on the vertebrate fauna identified there. However, no detailed systematic study of these historical remains was ever done., [Methods]: The unpublished historical remains from the Tremp Basin collected by Aguirre and Lapparent, and preserved in the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (Madrid) collections, are studied here., [Results]: The analysis of unpublished historical documentation housed in the archive of that institution allows us to improve the knowledge about the history of these findings, as well as to recognize the precise sites from which each of these fossils come., [Conclusion]: The systematic study of these specimens, corresponding to turtles, crocodiles and dinosaurs, is performed here. They are attributed to Bothremydidae indet., cf. Pan-Cryptodira, cf. Allodaposuchidae, Titanosauria indet., Nodosauridae indet. and Ornithopoda indet.

Abstract

Aim To determine the knowledge of undergraduate Spanish dental students regarding the indications of systemic antibiotics in the management of endodontic infections. Methodology The final year dental students from four Spanish dental schools were requested to answer a one-page questionnaire on the indications for systemic antibiotics in the treatment of endodontic infections. One hundred and seventy-five students were asked to participate in this research. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test. Results One hundred and four students (93.7%) completed satisfactorily the survey and were included in the study. The average duration of antibiotic therapy was 7.0 ± 2.0 days. All respondents chose amoxicillin as the first-choice antibiotic in patients with no medical allergies, alone (47%) or associated with clavulanic acid (53%). The first drug of choice for patients with an allergy to penicillin was clindamycin 300 mg (99%). For cases of irreversible pulpitis, up to 63% of students would prescribe antibiotics. For the scenario of a necrotic pulp, symptomatic apical periodontitis and no swelling, 44% would prescribe antibiotics. Almost 40% of students would prescribe antibiotics for necrotic pulps with asymptomatic apical periodontitis and a sinus tract. Conclusions It is necessary for the Spanish schools of dentistry to improve students' knowledge about antibiotics and their indications in endodontics. Interactive education analysing real endodontic cases using problem-based learning would help students acquire better skills in prescribing antibiotics in pulp-periapical pathosis. Abstract

Background: Limited data exist on the prognostic significance of the chronology of VTE in patients with PDAC., Methods: Medical data and survival characteristics of patients treated for PDAC from 2019 to 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Early VTE was defined as occurring within the three months of PDAC diagnosis., Results: 197 patients were included, 54 (27.4%) developed a VTE. Early appearance of VTE was associated with worse prognosis: median overall survival (mOS) VTE < 3 months 8.5 months (HR 1.65, 95% CI 1.11-2.46; p = 0.014), mOS VTE > 3 months 12.8 months (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.39-1.54; p = 0.5) and mOS patients without VTE 11.4 months (95% CI 10.1-15.4). There was no significant association between the patient's VTE risk according to the Khorana risk score (KRS) (chi2 test p-value = 0.9)., Conclusion: Early VTE is a prognostic factor in PDAC, which may identify a more aggressive subtype., (© 2024. Abstract

Environmental factors play a role in breast cancer development. While metals and metalloids (MMs) include some carcinogens, their association with breast cancer depends on the element studied. Most studies focus on individual MMs, but the combined effects of metal mixtures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the joint exposure to MMs and the risk of developing female breast cancer. We conducted a case-control study within the multicenter prospective EPIC-Spain cohort. Study population comprised 292 incident cases and 286 controls. Plasma concentrations of 16 MMs were quantified at recruitment. Potential confounders were collected using a questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were built to explore the effect of individual MMs. Quantile-based g computation models were applied to identify the main mixture components and to estimate the joint effect of the metal mixture. The geometric means were highest for Cu (845.6 ng/ml) and Zn (604.8 ng/ml). Cases had significantly higher Cu concentrations (p = 0.010) and significantly lower Zn concentrations (p < 0.001). Cu (+0.42) and Mn (+0.13) showed the highest positive weights, whereas Zn (-0.61) and W (-0.16) showed the highest negative weights. The joint effect of the metal mixture was estimated at an OR = 4.51 (95%CI = 2.32-8.79), suggesting a dose-response relationship. No evidence of non-linearity or non-additivity was found. An unfavorable exposure profile, primarily characterized by high Cu and low Zn levels, could lead to a significant increase in the risk of developing female breast cancer. Abstract

Galianemys is one of the three genera of Cearachelyini (Pleurodira, Bothremydidae) so far defined, being the only one identified in Africa (in the Cenomanian of Morocco). It is represented by two species, Galianemys whitei and Galianemys emringeri, both being identified by several skulls. The other two representatives of Cearachelyini are both South-American forms, and only the species Cearachelys placidoi (from the Albian of Brazil) preserves cranial remains, including a partial skull corresponding to its holotype. However, despite the relatively great number of skulls identified for both Galianemys spp. and Cearachelys placidoi, information about the neuroanatomy of this lineage is very limited. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the skulls of two specimens belonging to the genus Galianemys, each of them representing a different species, is performed here for the first time. All of the cranial bones of one of them are also virtually reconstructed to accurately characterize them. In addition, the 3D models of the main neuroanatomical structures (i.e., cranial, nasal, and labyrinthic cavities, and nervous and carotid canals) of both specimens were generated, most of them being described in detail for first time in Cearachelyini. Neuroanatomical differences are recognized when the skulls of both species of Galianemys analyzed here are compared. In addition, the comparison between the neuroanatomy of Galianemys spp. and that of other non-Cearachelyini bothremydids allow us to identify some differences between those lineages, but also recognize other shared characters for the entire lineage of Bothremydidae, to providing a more precise characterization within Pleurodira., (© 2022 The Authors. 50. Neuroanatomical study of the podocnemidid turtle Neochelys arenarum (Pleurodira), from the early Eocene of France.

Abstract

Neochelys is an exclusively European Eocene podocnemidid genus belonging to a linage that reached this continent at the early Eocene. The so far available anatomical information about it is relatively abundant, especially considering that of its shell, at least partially preserved for the eight valid species currently considered. By contrast, the skull of very few representatives of the taxon has been identified. Neochelys arenarum is one of the species for which the cranial anatomy is known. It corresponds to the oldest species of this genus, coming from the MP7 zone of the Ypresian (early Eocene) of Southern France. The 3D virtual cranial reconstruction and the detailed neuroanatomical study of a representative of Neochelys are carried out here for the first time based on that species, this being also the first study of this nature performed for a European podocnemidid. In addition, the comparison of the neuroanatomical structures (i.e., the endocranial and labyrinthic cavities, and the nervous and circulatory canals) of N. arenarum with those of other representatives of Podocnemidoidae has been achieved., (© 2023 The Authors.
