Shipping is a highly energy-intensive sector, and fleet decarbonization initiatives can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the short-to-medium term, internal combustion engines will continue to be used for propulsion or as electricity generators onboard ships. Natural gas is an effective solution which can be used to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from the marine sector. Considered to be a transitional fuel, it can provide a potential reduction in CO2 emissions of around 20–30%, compared with conventional marine fuels. This work investigated the influence of diesel-injection strategies on the performance and emissions of a single-cylinder prototype compression-ignition engine for marine applications, retrofitted to run as a Low-Pressure Dual-Fuel Engine using natural gas. Two different injection systems were used: a mass flow controller enabling continuous-mode gas feeding, and a Solenoid-Operated Gas Admission Valve for marine applications, the latter allowing phased natural-gas injection. Experimental tests were focused on partial-load conditions, which are critical for dual-fuel engines, with a natural gas/diesel mass ratio of 4:1. Phased injection resulted in reductions in fuel consumption, compared to continuous mode, of up to 11%. Further experiments demonstrated reductions in fuel consumption of up to 20.7% (in equivalent diesel); on the other hand, the unburned hydrocarbon emissions which resulted were an order of magnitude larger than the reference values for full diesel, reducing the benefits in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, with a reduction in Global Warming Potential of only 3% compared to full diesel. Phased injection of natural gas into internal combustion marine engines is a promising solution for optimizing performance and reducing harmful emissions, particularly unburned methane, a potent greenhouse gas. This innovative practice distinguishes itself from continuous injection because it allows for more precise control of the combustion process with only a slight increase in system complexity. By synchronizing the injection of natural gas with the intake and exhaust valve opening and closing times while also considering the gas path in the manifolds, methane release into the atmosphere is significantly reduced, making a substantial contribution to efforts to address climate change. Moreover, phased injection improves the efficiency of marine engines, resulting in reduced overall fuel consumption, lower fuel costs, and increased ship autonomy. This technology was tested on a single-cylinder, large-bore, four-stroke research engine designed for marine applications, operating in dual-fuel mode with diesel and natural gas. Performance was compared with that of the conventional continuous feeding method. Evaluation of the effect on equivalent CO2 emissions indicates a potential reduction of up to approximately 20%. This reduction effectively brings greenhouse gas emissions below those of the diesel baseline case, especially when injection control is combined with supercharging control to optimize the air–fuel ratio. As part of the Zero Pollution Action Plan of the Green Deal, the European Commission has set the goal of reducing the number of premature deaths caused by fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 2005 levels. To achieve this, the European Commission aims to introduce stricter limits. In urban areas, road transport is a significant source of PM emissions. Vehicle PM originates from engine exhaust and from tire, brake and road wear, as well as from road dust resuspension. In recent decades, the application of stringent emission limits on vehicle exhaust has led to the adoption of technologies capable of strongly reducing PM emissions at the tailpipe. Further, the progressive electrification of vehicle fleets will lead to near-zero exhaust PM emissions. On the other hand, non-exhaust PM emissions have increased in recent years following the proliferation of sport utility vehicles (SUVs), whose numbers have jumped nearly tenfold globally, and electric vehicles, as these vehicles tend to be heavier than corresponding conventional and older internal combustion engine light-duty vehicles. This shift has resulted in a more modest reduction in PM10 and PM2.5 emissions from the transport sector compared to other pollutants (−49% and −55%, respectively, from 1990 to 2020). This report aims to provide an up-to-date overview of non-exhaust PM characterization, drawing insights from the recent scientific literature to address this critical environmental and public health challenge. The transportation sector is responsible for about 16% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Despite efforts for a sensible reduction by means of new technologies' development, the average age of a vehicle fleet is 12.3 years in the European Union. In light of this, actions aiming at improving the efficiency of circulating vehicles can prove effective in the short to mid-term. Introducing performance packages in standard fuels could allow a reduction in the CO2 emissions of whole vehicle fleets without any modification to powertrain. Such a kind of additive is generally used in premium fuels; deposit control additives can reduce or control the deposits at intake valves and at nozzle holes with benefits for the fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions. Further improvements in combustion phasing can be achieved with cetane/octane improver. This paper aims to assess the influence of two performance packages on the exhaust emissions and fuel consumption of five vehicles set to be as representative as possible of circulating Italian passenger cars and light commercial fleet vehicles (LCVs). Based on the literature datasets, three Euro 4 vehicles were selected with a mileage representative of each single vehicle class: two passenger cars (one spark ignition and one diesel) and an LCV. Further, two diesel Euro 6 vehicles, a passenger car and an LCV, were tested to investigate the effect of fuel additives on the combustion of vehicles compliant with current homologation regulation. Exhaust emissions and fuel consumption were experimentally estimated on a chassis dynamometer over a worldwide harmonized light vehicles test cycle (WLTC) in a climate-controlled laboratory. Each vehicle was preliminarily tested when running with base fuel, then a 3000 km clean-up stage was performed using the additive package. Finally, WLTC tests were repeated. Results demonstrated the efficiency of the performance packages with a reduction between 1.2% (diesel Euro 6 passenger car) and 8.1% (diesel Euro 4 passenger car) in fuel consumption. This paper deals with the effects of hydrogen port injection on combustion evolution, efficiency and exhaust emissions of a small turbocharged gasoline Spark-Ignition engine through a 1D numerical code. First, the experiments on the base engine architecture are performed at different speeds and at low/medium loads. The experimental findings are used to validate a 1D model of the whole engine, developed within a commercial code. 1D model is also refined with “user-defined” sub-models for an accurate description of the in-cylinder phenomena, namely turbulence, combustion, heat transfer, and emissions. In a second step, 1D model is virtually modified through the installation of an hydrogen injector in each intake runner, while the combustion sub-model also accounts for the impact of hydrogen addition on the laminar flame speed through a dedicated correlation. 1D simulations are performed at low/medium loads and fixed speed of 2250 rpm with 5% of hydrogen by volume in the intake air. Numerical investigations show that hydrogen addition to gasoline/air mixtures allows relevant efficiency benefits (up to a maximum percent gain of 19%), while the NO emissions are almost eliminated. Consequently, hydrogen-boosted combustion represents a potential solution to achieve very high efficiency and reduced pollutant emissions of gasoline spark ignition engines equipped with a conventional combustion system.

Ever tighter restrictions on pollutant emissions, energy security and a continuous drive for improving fuel economy have extended the range of application for direct injection in spark ignition engines and promoted the use of alternative fuels. Direct injection features higher soot formation compared to external mixture preparation, and therefore, intensive research is performed for understanding the processes related to this pollutant category. This study looked into the effect of injection timing in a wall-guided direct injection spark ignition engine when gasoline was completely replaced with n-butanol. Thermodynamic measurements were coupled with optical investigations that provided improved insight into local distribution of diffusive flames during late combustion stages. These data were correlated with exhaust gas measurements of CO, HC and NOx, as well as opacity. The optimum setting for injection timing was found to be a compromise between intake airflow velocity and piston positioning that influenced wall impingement. Late injection resulted in reduced soot but higher HC emissions, as well as lower performance compared to the optimum point. Early fuel delivery had roughly the same effect on indicated mean effective pressure and stability, with the downside of increased opacity. These observations were detailed with data obtained through cycle-resolved imaging that showed different integral luminosities with respect to injection phasing and confirmed that fuel impingement on the piston crown is the main factor of influence for soot formation. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy in the late combustion phase was also applied in repetitive mode in order to provide better insight into cyclic variability of the emission intensity in the range specific for carbonaceous structures. Combustion process was studied from the injection until the late combustion phase in an high swirl optically accessible combustion bowl connected to a single cylinder two-stroke high pressure common rail compression ignition engine. Commercial diesel and blends of diesel and n-butanol (20%: BU20 and 40%: BU40) were used for the experiments. A pilot plus main injection strategy was investigated fixing the injection pressure and fuel mass injected per stroke. Two main injection timings and different pilot- main dwell times were explored achieving for any strategy a mixing controlled combustion. Advancing the main injection start, an increase in net engine working cycle (>40%) together with a strong smoke number decrease (>80%) and NOx concentration increase (≃50%) were measured for all pilot injection timings. Compared to diesel fuel, butanol induced a decrease in soot emission and an increase in net engine working area when butanol ratio increased in the blend. A noticeable increase in NOx was detected at the exhaust for BU40 with a slight effect of the dwell-time. Spectroscopic investigations confirmed the delayed auto-ignition (∼ 60 μs) of the pilot injection for BU40 compared to diesel. The spectral features for the different fuels were comparable at the start of combustion process, but they evolved in different ways. Broadband signal caused by soot emission, was lower for BU40 than diesel. Different balance of the bands at 309 and 282 nm, due to different hydrooxide transitions, were detected between the twofuels.
