Two compounds were discovered in the well-studied BaO-Y 2 O 3 -SiO 2 phase field. Two different experimental routines were used for the exploration of this system due to the differences of synthetic conditions and competition with a glass field. The first phase Ba 5 Y 13 [SiO 4 ] 8 O 8.5 was isolated through a combination of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis and diffraction techniques which guided the exploration. The second phase Ba 3 Y 2 [Si 2 O 7 ] 2 was located using iterative algorithmic identification of target compositions. The structure solution of the new compounds was aided by continuous rotation electron diffraction, and the structures were refined against combined synchrotron and neutron time-of-flight powder diffraction. Ba 5 Y 13 [SiO 4 ] 8 O 8.5 crystallizes in I 4̄2 m , a = 18.92732(1), c = 5.357307(6) Å and represents its own structure type which combines elements of structures of known silicates embedded in columns of interconnected yttrium-centred polyhedra characteristic of high-pressure phases. Ba 3 Y 2 [Si 2 O 7 ] 2 has P 2 1 symmetry with a pseudo-tetragonal cell ( a = 16.47640(4), b = 9.04150(5), c = 9.04114(7) Å, β = 90.0122(9)°) and is a direct superstructure of the Ca 3 BaBi[P 2 O 7 ] 2 structure. Despite the lower symmetry, the structure of Ba 3 Y 2 [Si 2 O 7 ] 2 retains disorder in both Ba/Y sites and disilicate network, thus presenting a superposition of possible locally-ordered fragments. Ba 5 Y 13 [SiO 4 ] 8 O 8.5 has low thermal conductivity of 1.04(5) W m -1 K -1 at room temperature. The two discovered phases provide a rich structural platform for further functional material design. Porous materials perform molecular sorting, separation and transformation by interaction between their framework structures and the substrates. Proteins also interact with molecules to effect chemical transformations, but rely on the precise sequence of the amino acid building units along a common polypeptide backbone to maximise their performance. Design strategies that positionally order sidechains over a defined porous framework to diversify the internal surface chemistry would enhance control of substrate processing. Here we show that different sidechains can be ordered over a metal-organic framework through recognition of their distinct chemistries during synthesis. The sidechains are recognised because each one forces the common building unit that defines the backbone of the framework into a different conformation in order to form the extended structure. The resulting sidechain ordering affords hexane isomer separation performance superior to that of the same framework decorated only with sidechains of a single kind. The separated molecules adopt distinct arrangements within the resulting modified pore geometry, reflecting their strongly differentiated environments precisely created by the ordered sidechains. The development of frameworks that recognize and order multiple sidechain functionality by conformational control offers tailoring of the internal surfaces within families of porous materials to direct interactions at the molecular level., (© 2024 The Authors. This paper describes a simple and practical protocol for the direct synthesis of acyclic and cyclic quinone derivatives via an acid-promoted nickel(II)-catalyzed inner rim C-H oxidation of cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) and its analogues. The cyclic quinone derivatives resulted from trimethoxy-cyclotriveratrylene (TCTV) through C-C bond formation via intramolecular ipso substitution followed by subsequent anionic rearrangement containing stereo-vicinal quaternary centers. The DFT calculations strongly support the experimental findings and reveal the role of Brønsted acids in the C-H bond activation of CTV. All the newly synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro anti-cancer activity using colorimetric SRB assay analysis. Among them, compounds 3a, 3d, 3h, 4a, 4b, 4c and 4e exhibited moderate anticancer activity against A549, HCT-116, PC-3, MDA-MB-231, HEK-293 and SW620 human cancer cell lines.

A simple and efficient methodology for the one-pot synthesis of 3,3'-disubstituted oxindoles featuring an all-carbon quaternary center has been demonstrated through l-proline catalysed three-component reaction based on sequential Knoevenagel condensation/Michael addition and also one-pot synthesis of spiro[2 H -pyran-3,4'-indoline] through consecutive Knoevenagel condensation/Michael addition/reduction/cyclization reactions from readily available isatin derivatives, malononitrile, and ketones. The present methodology presents several advantages, including simple reaction set-up, short reaction times, and easy to work-up. Background: In 2015, the Ministry of Health in Mali included the treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) into the package of activities of the integrated Community Case Management (iCCM). This paper aims to analyze the impact of including community health workers (CHWs) as treatment providers outside the Health Facilities (HFs) on the coverage of SAM treatment when scaling up the intervention in the three largest districts of the Kayes Region in Mali., Methods: A baseline coverage assessment was conducted in August 2017 in the three districts before the CHWs started treating SAM. The end-line assessment was conducted one year later, in August 2018. Coverage was assessed by the standardized methodology called Semi-Quantitative Evaluation of Access and Coverage (SQUEAC). The primary outcome was treatment coverage and other variables evaluated were the geographical distribution of the HFs, CHW's sites and overlapping between both health providers, the estimation of children with geographical access to health care and the estimation of children screened for acute malnutrition in their communities., Results: Treatment coverage increased in Kayes (28.7-57.1%) and Bafoulabé (20.4-61.1%) but did not in Kita (28.4-28.5%). The decentralization of treatment has not had the same impact on coverage in all districts, with significant differences. The geospatial analyses showed that Kita had a high proportion of overlap between HFs and/or CHWs 48.7% (39.2-58.2), a high proportion of children without geographical access to health care 70.4% (70.1-70.6), and a high proportion of children not screened for SAM in their communities 52.2% (51.9-52.5)., Conclusions: Working with CHWs in SAM increases treatment coverage, but other critical aspects need to be considered by policymakers if this intervention model is intended to be scaled up at the country level. To improve families' access to nutritional health care, before establishing decentralized treatment in a whole region it must be considered the geographical location of CHWs. Zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide hybrids with high exciton binding energy are excellent materials for lighting applications. Controlling/modulating the structure of the constituent metal halide units allows tunability of their photoluminescence properties. 0D manganese halide hybrids are currently attracting research efforts in lighting applications due to their eco-friendly and strong emission. However, structural transformation-induced tunability of their photophysical properties has rarely been reported. Herein, we demonstrate a rational synthetic strategy to modulate the structure and luminescence properties of 0D Mn(II) halide hybrids utilizing the structure-directing d 10 metal ions (Cd 2+ /Zn 2+ ). 0D metal halide hybrids of Cd 2+ /Zn 2+ , which act as hosts with tunable structures, accept Mn 2+ ions as substitutional dopants. This structural flexibility of the host d 10 metal ions is realized by optimizing the metal-to-ligand ratio (Cd/AEPip). This reaction parameter allows structural transformation from an octahedral (AEPipCdMnBrO h ) to a tetrahedral (AEPipCdMnBrT d ) 0D Mn halide hybrid with tunable luminescence (orange → green) with high photoluminescence quantum yield. Interestingly, when Zn 2+ is utilized, a tetrahedral AEPipZnMnBr structure forms exclusively with strong green emission. Optical and single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analysis of the host and the doped system supports our experimental data and confirms the structure-directing role played by Cd 2+ /Zn 2+ centers. This work demonstrates a rational strategy to modulate the structure/luminescence properties of 0D Mn(II) halide hybrids, which can further be implemented for other 0D metal halide hybrids.

Rabies is the most dreaded neglected zoonosis worldwide. It affects mostly developing countries with limited access to post-exposure prophylaxis and a low coverage of dog vaccination., Objective: This study estimates the burden of human rabies in Mali from the extrapolation of animal bite surveillance, mostly dogs, in the region of Sikasso and the District of Bamako in 2016 and 2017., Material and Methods: Monte Carlo simulations of a series of interconnected probabilities were used to estimate the burden of rabies. The data was collected from cross-sectional surveys of 8775 households of which 4172 were in the District of Bamako and 4603 in the region of Sikasso. Further data was collected in health centres and from the respective veterinary services., Results: We estimate that in the year 2016 133 [95% Confidence Interval (95%CI) 87-186] people died and that 5'366 [95%CI 3'510-7'504] years of life (YLL) were lost and in 2017 et 136 [95%CI 96-181] people died and that 5530 [IC 95% 3'913-7'377] YLLs were lost. The loss of income was estimated at 3.2 million USD [95%CI 2,1-4,5] en 2016, and 3,3 million USD [95%CI 2,3-4,4] in 2017. This represents the highest financial loss from rabies, followed by the cost of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) of 86'848 $USD and 89'371 $ USD respectively. From the whole cost of rabies in Mali, 92% of the cost in 2016 and 94% of those in 2017 were attributable to premature mortality and the cost of help seeking. The proportion of cost of PEP was 3% in 2016 and 2017 of the total cost of disease. The cost related to dog vaccination changed from 3% to 1% in the same time period., Conclusion: This study shows that despite the possibility of preventing human rabies by PEP, its burden remains important in Malian communities. Rabies control by mass vaccination of dogs is hardly done and access to PEP is difficult. However, Rabies elimination by mass vaccination of dogs has been demonstrated to be feasible. The synthetically modified green fluorescent protein chromophore analogue 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzylidene imidazolinone (1) yielded five polymorphs (I, II, III, IV, V) concomitantly irrespective of the solvent used for crystallization. The pentamorphic modification of 1 is solely due to the interplay of iso-energetic weak intermolecular interactions in molecular associations as well as the conformational flexibility offered by a C-C single bond, which connects the electron-deficient moiety imidazolinone with the electron-rich trimethoxybenzylidene group. A common structural feature observed in all the polymorphs is the formation of a `zero-dimensional' centrosymmetric dimeric unit through a short and linear C-H...O hydrogen bond engaging phenyl C-H and imidazolinone carbonyl oxygen. However, the networking of these dimeric units showed a subtle difference in all the polymorphs. The 2D isostructurality was observed between polymorphs I, II and III, while the other two polymorphs IV and V revealed only `zero-dimensional' isostructurality. The different fluorescence emissions of Form I (blue) and Forms II to V (yellow) were attributed to the differences in π-stacking interactions. It shows that one can modulate the photophysical properties of these smart materials by slightly altering their crystal structure. Such an approach will aid in developing new multi-colour organic fluorescent materials of varying crystal structures for live-cell imaging and fluorescent sensing applications.

Context: Rabies is endemic in Mali, but little is known about the distribution of rabies and its surveillance across the country. Documenting the evolution of rabies and the problems related to surveillance is useful to facilitate elimination of human rabies by 2030., Method: Data collected at the Central Veterinary Laboratory (LCV) from 1999 to 2017 and through the surveillance system functioning at household, health and veterinary structure levels, as established by the Global Vaccine Alliance funded project on the burden of rabies, between 2016 and 2017 in Bamako and the Sikasso region were used in this study. All data on animals examined for rabies by the direct fluorescence antibody test (DFA) during the specified time period were summarized, and the proportion of rabies positive tested among animals suspected of rabies was estimated. From the number of dogs tested positive for rabies, a cumulative incidence was estimated for the total canine population. The number of positive tested samples was divided by the product of the estimated canine population and number of years (18). In addition, the number of human rabies cases was analyzed to estimate a cumulative incidence., Results: Among all animal samples suspected for rabies, 93.2% [95% CI 90.6-95.3] were positive by the DFA test. From the 486 included animal samples, 94.7% [95% CI 92.3-96.5] were domestic dogs with 90.9% [95% CI 87.9-93.3] positive, which stands out as the main reservoir of rabies in Mali. Cats, cattle, sheep and donkeys also tested positive using the DFA test. The cumulative incidence of canine rabies was estimated at 0.371 [95% CI: 0.336-0.408] / 10'000 dogs. The highest incidence was observed in Bamako, the capital of Mali, with a cumulative incidence of 2.242 [95% CI: 2.001-2.504] / 10'000 dogs, followed by Koulikoro with 0.335 [95% CI: 0.258-0.429] / 10'000 dogs. For other areas far from LCV, the cumulative incidence was low, with zero in Kidal. Nationally reported cases of human rabies declined in recent years with an average of 12.6 [95% CI: 8.7-16.5] deaths per year. This result gives an annual incidence of 0.1047 [0.0742-0.1352] / 100'000 inhabitants., Conclusion: Over the past 18 years, rabies is endemically stable in Mali despite the decrease in reported human cases. The disparity among regions in number of samples tested indicates a low level of clinical and laboratory surveillance and likely a high level of underreporting. Dogs play the main role in rabies transmission in Mali. Monitoring of and decisions for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) includes other animals (cats, cattle, and monkeys) involved in transmission. Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) with 3 or more doses of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is recommended by the World Health Organization to prevent malaria in pregnant women living in high-risk areas. According to the 2015 malaria indicator survey in Mali, malaria prevalence is 34.6%. The high risk of malaria among pregnant women and children led the Malian government to provide free SP during antenatal clinics visits. The Malian National Program of Malaria Control recommends at least 3 doses during pregnancy. The proportion of pregnant women taking 3 or more doses of IPTp-SP (IPTp 3+) still remains low. In Mali, only 36.7% of pregnant women with a live birth in the past 2 yr received IPTp 3+. To investigate the factors associated with this low coverage, we carried out a secondary data analysis using the database of the Mali 2015 Malaria Indicator Survey. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze these factors among 2,382 interviewed women. Taking less than 3 doses was higher among women below 20 yr (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.43, 95% confidence interval [CI, 1.03; 1.98]); however, media accessibility (listening to radio) (AOR = 0.71, 95% CI [0.53-0.95]) and residing in Segou (AOR = 0.56, 95% CI [0.35-0.90]) seem to favor the opposite after adjusting the potential confusion. Residence, educational level, and wealth index were not statistically associated with taking 3 doses of IPTp-SP. This study identifies that women less than 20 yr of age were significantly associated with taking lower than 3 doses of IPTp-SP.

Since 1950, the global urban population grew from 746 million to almost 4 billion and is expected to reach 6.4 billion by mid-century. Almost 90% of this increase will take place in Asia and Africa and disproportionately in urban slums. In this context, concerns about the amplification of several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are warranted and efforts towards achieving effective mass drug administration (MDA) coverage become even more important. This narrative review considers the published literature on MDA implementation for specific NTDs and in-country experiences under the ENVISION and END in Africa projects to surface features of urban settings that challenge delivery strategies known to work in rural areas. Discussed under the thematics of governance, population heterogeneity, mobility and community trust in MDA, these features include weak public health infrastructure and programs, challenges related to engaging diverse and dynamic populations and the limited accessibility of certain urban settings such as slums. Although the core components of MDA programs for NTDs in urban settings are similar to those in rural areas, their delivery may need adjustment. Effective coverage of MDA in diverse urban populations can be supported by tailored approaches informed by mapping studies, research that identifies context-specific methods to increase MDA coverage and rigorous monitoring and evaluation.

Gastric emptying rate influences how fast the nutrients of a meal are delivered to the body, and when slow, it moderates glycemic response and may impact satiety. Carbohydrates are one of the macronutrients that trigger the ileal brake, and we hypothesized that slowly digestible carbohydrate (SDC) administered in a premeal load would delay gastric emptying. A crossover design study was conducted with 10 healthy adults using fabricated SDC-microspheres (cooked) that were given 20 minutes before a non-nutritive viscous paste meal. There were 4 treatment arms, each separated by a 1-week washout period, consisting of (1) the paste alone, (2) a rapidly digesting maltodextrin (Polycose) preload followed by the paste 20 minutes later, (3) an SDC-microsphere preload followed by the paste, and (4) a comparably slower SDC-microsphere preload followed by the paste. A 13 C-labeled octanoic acid breath test method was used to measure gastric emptying, with the label incorporated into the non-nutritive paste. The microspheres were less than 1 mm in diameter (a size that does not require breakdown in the stomach before emptying) and, after cooking, were of the same density value. Compared with the paste alone, both of the SDC-microsphere preloads (slow and comparably slower digesting) decreased gastric emptying rate of the paste, with the latter having the most effect (half-emptying times of 1.7, 2.3, and 2.8 hours, respectively [each different at P<.05]). The success of vector control strategies aiming to decrease disease transmission via the release of sterile or genetically-modified male mosquitoes critically depends on mating between laboratory-reared males and wild females. Unfortunately, mosquito colonization, laboratory rearing, and genetic manipulations can all negatively affect male competitiveness. Heterosis is commonly used to produce domestic animals with enhanced vigor and homogenous genetic background and could therefore potentially improve the mating performance of mass-reared male mosquitoes. Here, we produced enhanced hybrid males of the malaria mosquito Anopheles coluzzii by crossing two strains colonized >35 and 8 years ago. We compared the amount of sperm and mating plug proteins they transferred to females, as well as their insemination rate, reproductive success and longevity under various experimental conditions. Across experiments, widespread adaptations to laboratory mating were detected in the older strain. In large-group mating experiments, no overall hybrid advantage in insemination rates and the amount of sperm and accessory gland proteins transferred to females was detected. Despite higher sperm activity, hybrid males did not appear more fecund. However, individual-male mating and laboratory-swarm experiments revealed that hybrid males, while inseminating fewer females than older inbred males, were significantly more fertile, producing larger mating plugs and drastically increasing female fecundity. Heterotic males also showed increased longevity. These results validate the use of heterosis for creating hybrid males with improved fitness from long-established inbred laboratory strains.
