Eminent Chinese of the Qing Period was first developed under the auspices of the US Library of Congress during World War II. This much-loved work, edited by Arthur W. Hummel Sr., was meticulously compiled and unique in its scope, and quickly became the standard biographical reference for the Qing dynasty, which lasted from 1644 to 1911/2. Amongst the contributors are John King Fairbank, Têng Ssû-yü, L. Carrington Goodrich, C. Martin Wilbur, Fêng Chia-shêng, Knight Biggerstaff, and Nancy Lee Swann. The 2018 Berkshire edition contains the original eight hundred biographical sketches as well as the original front and back matter, including the preface by Hu Shih, a scholar who had been China's ambassador to the United States. An introduction by Pamela Crossley places this classic work in historical context, and discusses its origins, authors and editors, themes, style, and contemporary relevance. Chinese names in English have been converted to the pinyin transcription system (changing the book's title from Ch'ing to Qing), but the traditional Chinese characters have been retained. Additional materials added by Berkshire include a general bibliography, a Wade-Giles to pinyin conversion table, and a list of Qing dynasty emperors. Arthur W. Hummel Sr. (1884–1975) was a missionary, sinologist, and the first director of the Orientalia Division at the Library of Congress. Pamela Crossley is a professor at Dartmouth College and a specialist on the Qing empire and modern Chinese history, as well as the software author and scholarly editor of the ECCP Reader, a digital companion to the original Eminent Chinese of the Ch'ing Period.

The Manchu Qing victory over the Chinese Ming Dynasty in the mid-seventeenth century was one of the most surprising and traumatic developments in China's long history. In the last year of the Ming, the southwest region of China became the base of operations for the notorious leader Zhang Xianzhong (1605–47), a peasant rebel known as the Yellow Tiger. Zhang's systematic reign of terror allegedly resulted in the deaths of at least one-sixth of the population of the entire Sichuan province in just two years. The rich surviving source record, however, indicates that much of the destruction took place well after Zhang's death in 1647 and can be attributed to independent warlords, marauding bandits, the various Ming and Qing armies vying for control of the empire, and natural disasters. On the Trail of the Yellow Tiger is the first Western study to examine in detail the aftermath of the Qing conquest by focusing on the social and demographic effects of the Ming-Qing transition. By integrating the modern techniques of trauma and memory studies into the military and social history of the transition, Kenneth M. He also considers the Ming-Qing transition in light of contemporary conflicts around the globe, offering a comparative military history that engages with the universal connections between war and society.

The book is a chronological study of the history of films related to Chinese Minorities from the period of 1927 through 2010 focusing on many aspects such as their themes, cinematic story-telling styles, ideological impact, and their commercialization and globalization. The book also takes a look at these films regarding Chinese Minorities in order to provide definitions and explore the areas of female imagery, features of TV films, film-making strategies and more. The author divides the history into seven stages. The first stage begins in 1927, the year when Mulan, the first film related to the theme of Chinese Minorities, was produced, and ends in 1949, the year when the People's Republic of China was founded. The second stage lasts from 1949 to 1955, featuring The Victory of the People of Inner Mongolia as the first Chinese Minority themed film. The policy of'letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend'heralds the third stage (1956-1959). The fourth stage (1960-1976) is considered a period of twists and turns. The film-making is compared to'dancing with shackles on'due to its stagnation arising from the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. The fifth stage is from 1977 to 1989, which witnesses the revival of Chinese Minority film-making that came with the reform and opening up policy promulgated in 1978. The sixth stage (1990-1999) is viewed as the transition phase, in which the economic restructuring has an impact on film-making. The seventh stage from 2000 to 2010 is featured by a boom of the market-driven Chinese Minority film industry. A Film History of Chinese Minorities is of great significance. As for the theoretical significance, the book is good to the film studies and culture studies. As for the practical significance, it helps to understand the Chinese Minority culture. The methodology of the book includes documentation, comparison, analysis and explanation.
