We investigate the change in mean stellar population age and metallicity ([Z/H]) scaling relations for quiescent galaxies from intermediate redshift ($0.60\leq z\leq0.76$) using the LEGA-C Survey, to low redshift ($0.014\leq z\leq0.10$) using the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We find that, similarly to their low-redshift counterparts, the stellar metallicity of quiescent galaxies at $0.60\leq z\leq 0.76$ closely correlates with $M_*/R_\mathrm{e}$ (a proxy for the gravitational potential or escape velocity), in that galaxies with deeper potential wells are more metal-rich. This supports the hypothesis that the relation arises due to the gravitational potential regulating the retention of metals, by determining the escape velocity required by metal-rich stellar and supernova ejecta to escape the system and avoid being recycled into later stellar generations. On the other hand, we find no correlation between stellar age and $M_*/R_\mathrm{e}^2$ (stellar mass surface density $\Sigma$) in the LEGA-C sample, despite this being a strong relation at low redshift. We consider this change in the age--$\Sigma$ relation in the context of the redshift evolution of the star-forming and quiescent populations in the mass--size plane, and find our results can be explained as a consequence of galaxies forming more compactly at higher redshifts, and remaining compact throughout their evolution. Furthermore, galaxies appear to quench at a characteristic surface density that decreases with decreasing redshift. We use the MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic survey of low-redshift galaxies to compare the stellar populations of the bulge and disc components, identified from their Sersic profiles, for various samples of galaxies. Bulge dominated regions tend to be more metal-rich and have slightly older stellar ages than their associated disc dominated regions. The metallicity difference is consistent with the deeper gravitational potential in bulges relative to discs, which allows bulges to retain more of the metals produced by stars. The age difference is due to star formation persisting longer in discs relative to bulges. Relative to galaxies with lower stellar masses, galaxies with higher stellar masses tend to have bulge dominated regions that are more metal-rich and older (in light-weighted measurements) than their disc dominated regions. This suggests high-mass galaxies quench from the inside out, while lower-mass galaxies quench across the whole galaxy simultaneously. Early-type galaxies tend to have bulge dominated regions the same age as their disc dominated regions, while late-type galaxies tend to have disc dominated regions significantly younger than their bulge dominated regions. Central galaxies tend to have a greater metallicity difference between their bulge dominated regions and disc dominated regions than satellite galaxies at similar stellar mass. This difference may be explained by central galaxies being subject to mergers or extended gas accretion bringing new, lower-metallicity gas to the disc, thereby reducing the average metallicity and age of the stars; quenching of satellite discs may also play a role., Accepted by PASA

T-cell replete hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from a haploidentical donor followed by high doses of cyclophosphamide has been demonstrated to provide the best chances of a cure for many children in need of an allograft but who lack both a sibling and an unrelated donor. In this study we retrospectively compared the outcome of pediatric patients undergoing T-replete haploidentical HSCT (Haplo) for acute leukemia with those undergoing transplantation from unrelated HLA-matched donor (MUD) and HLA mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD) from 2012 to 2017 at our Center. Both univariable and multivariable analyses showed similar 5-year overall survival rates for MUD, MMUD, and Haplo patients: 71% (95% CI 56-86), 72% (95% CI 55-90), and 75% (95% CI 54-94), respectively (p = 0.97). Haplo patients showed reduced event-free survival rates compared to MUD and MMUD patients: 30% (95% CI 12-49) versus 70% (95% CI 55-84) versus 53% (95% CI 35-73), respectively (p = 0.007), but these data were not confirmed by a multivariable analysis. Non-relapse mortality (NRM) and relapse incidence (RI) were similar for the three groups. Therefore, our data confirm that Haplo is a suitable clinical option for pediatric patients needing HSCT when lacking both an MUD and an MMUD donor.

This study was designed to evaluate the use of a novel imaging technique, dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for detecting mesenteric peritoneal metastases. Thirty-four patients underwent preoperative conventional MRI, including T1, T2, diffusion-weighted (DWI), and delayed gadolinium MRI, as well as DCE MRI. DCE MRI involved imaging the peritoneal cavity every 9 s for 6 min. DCE images were processed to generate parametric maps of tumor vascularity. Two oncologic surgeons and a radiologist reviewed conventional MRI for all tumor and then later reviewed the conventional MRI plus the DCE parametric maps. Images were reviewed for tumor of the parietal peritoneum, porta hepatis, bowel serosa, upper small bowel mesentery, lower small bowel mesentery, and pelvis. Conventional MRI and DCE + MRI findings were compared to operative and histopathologic reports for tumor detection. PCI scores were calculated for surgery, MRI, and DCE. Upper mesenteric tumor was present in 21 patients. DCE images showed a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 92%, and accuracy of 97% compared with conventional MRI sensitivity of 24%, specificity of 93%, and accuracy of 50% (p = 0.006). Lower mesenteric tumor was present in 22 patients. DCE images showed a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 92%, and accuracy of 97% compared with conventional MRI sensitivity of 45%, specificity of 92%, and accuracy of 62% (p = 0.008). The mean surgical PCI for all 34 patients was 23.4 compared with MRI 20.0 (p = 0.003) and DCE MRI 24.1 (p = 0.26). The addition of the DCE images improved the accuracy of total PCI by > 10% in 16 (0.46) patients. For PCI regions 9–12, the mean surgical PCI was 6.0 compared with MRI 4.8 (p = 0.08) and DCE 6.6 (p = 0.02). The addition of DCE images improved the accuracy of the regional PCI > 10% in 15 (0.43) patients. DCE MRI provides a novel contrast tool that improves detection of mesenteric tumor. Depicting small-volume mesenteric tumor is better on DCE MRI compared with conventional MRI.

We present spectroscopic confirmation of candidate strong gravitational lenses using the Keck Observatory and Very Large Telescope as part of our ASTRO 3D Galaxy Evolution with Lenses (AGEL) survey. We confirm that 1) search methods using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with visual inspection successfully identify strong gravitational lenses and 2) the lenses are at higher redshifts relative to existing surveys due to the combination of deeper and higher resolution imaging from DECam and spectroscopy spanning optical to near-infrared wavelengths. We measure 104 redshifts in 77 systems selected from a catalog in the DES and DECaLS imaging fields (rz_defl), and 15 lenses with a spectroscopic redshift for either the deflector (z_defl>0.21) or source (z_src>1.34). For the 68 lenses, the deflectors and sources have average redshifts and standard deviations of 0.58+/-0.14 and 1.92+/-0.59 respectively, and corresponding redshift ranges of (0.210.5 that are ideal for follow-up studies to track how mass density profiles evolve with redshift. Our goal with AGEL is to spectroscopically confirm ~100 strong gravitational lenses that can be observed from both hemispheres throughout the year. Compared to many other rodent species, naked mole rats (Heterocephalus glaber) have elevated auditory thresholds, poor frequency selectivity, and limited ability to localize sound. Because the cochlea is responsible for encoding and relaying auditory signals to the brain, we used immunofluorescence and quantitative image analysis to examine cochlear innervation in mature and developing naked mole rats compared to mice (Mus musculus), gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), and Damaraland mole rats (Fukomys damarensis), another subterranean rodent. In comparison to mice and gerbils, we observed alterations in afferent and efferent innervation as well as their patterns of developmental refinement in naked and Damaraland mole rats. These alterations were, however, not always shared similarly between naked and Damaraland mole rats. Most conspicuously, in both naked and Damaraland mole rats, inner hair cell (IHC) afferent ribbon density was reduced, whereas outer hair cell afferent ribbon density was increased. Naked and Damaraland mole rats also showed reduced lateral and medial efferent terminal density. Developmentally, naked mole rats showed reduced and prolonged postnatal reorganization of afferent and efferent innervation. Damaraland mole rats showed no evidence of postnatal reorganization. Differences in cochlear innervation specifically between the two subterranean rodents and more broadly among rodents provides insight into the cochlear mechanisms that enhance frequency sensitivity and sound localization, maturation of the auditory system, and the evolutionary adaptations occurring in response to subterranean environments.

Primary tumor location has been shown to be prognostic of overall survival (OS) in patients with both locally advanced and metastatic colorectal cancer. The impact of sidedness on prognosis has not been evaluated in the setting of peritoneal-only metastases treated with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). A retrospective review of prospectively maintained databases of patients with peritoneal surface malignancy undergoing CRS/HIPEC from three high-volume centers was performed. A total of 115 patients with metastatic colon cancer to the peritoneum who underwent CRS/HIPEC with mitomycin C were identified. Fifty-one patients (45%) had left-sided primary tumors, and 64 (55%) had right-sided primary tumors. Patients with right-sided tumors were more likely to be older (median age 56 vs. 49 years, p = 0.007) and to have signet ring cell histology (17% vs. 4%, p = 0.026). Patients with right-sided tumors had median disease-free survival (DFS) and OS of 14 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 10.5–17.5) and 36 months (95% CI 27.4–44.6), respectively, versus 16 months (95% CI 11.0–21.0) and 69 months (95% CI 24.3–113.7) for those patients with left-sided tumors. On multivariate analysis, primary tumor side was an independent predictor of both DFS and OS. In this study, there was a dramatic, clinically significant difference in OS between patients with right- and left-sided tumors, and primary tumor side was an independent predictor of DFS and OS. Primary tumor side should be considered in patient selection for CRS with or without HIPEC.

We have entered a new era where integral-field spectroscopic surveys of galaxies are sufficiently large to adequately sample large-scale structure over a cosmologically significant volume. This was the primary design goal of the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Here, in Data Release 3 (DR3), we release data for the full sample of 3068 unique galaxies observed. This includes the SAMI cluster sample of 888 unique galaxies for the first time. For each galaxy, there are two primary spectral cubes covering the blue (370-570nm) and red (630-740nm) optical wavelength ranges at spectral resolving power of R=1808 and 4304 respectively. For each primary cube, we also provide three spatially binned spectral cubes and a set of standardized aperture spectra. For each galaxy, we include complete 2D maps from parameterized fitting to the emission-line and absorption-line spectral data. These maps provide information on the gas ionization and kinematics, stellar kinematics and populations, and more. We present an overview of the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, a Large Program on ESO/VLT. MAGPI is designed to study the physical drivers of galaxy transformation at a lookback time of 3-4 Gyr, during which the dynamical, morphological, and chemical properties of galaxies are predicted to evolve significantly. The survey uses new medium-deep adaptive optics aided MUSE observations of fields selected from the GAMA survey, providing a wealth of publicly available ancillary multi-wavelength data. We use deep, spatially resolved spectroscopy from the LEGA-C Survey to study radial variations in the stellar population of 17 spectroscopically-selected post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. We use spectral fitting to measure two Lick indices, $H{\delta}_A$ and $Fe4383$, and find that, on average, PSB galaxies have radially decreasing $H{\delta}_A$ and increasing $Fe4383$ profiles. In contrast, a control sample of quiescent, non-PSB galaxies in the same mass range shows outwardly increasing $H{\delta}_A$ and decreasing $Fe4383$. The observed gradients are weak ($\approx-0.2$ \r{A}/$R_e$), mainly due to seeing convolution. A two-SSP model suggests intrinsic gradients are as strong as observed in local PSB galaxies ($\approx -0.8$ \r{A}$/R_e$). We interpret these results in terms of inside-out growth (for the bulk of the quiescent population) vs star formation occurring last in the centre (for PSB galaxies). At $z\approx0.8$, central starbursts are often the result of gas-rich mergers, as evidenced by the high fraction of PSB galaxies with disturbed morphologies and tidal features (40%). Our results provide additional evidence for multiple paths to quiescence: a standard path, associated with inside-out disc formation and with gradually decreasing star-formation activity, without fundamental structural transformation, and a fast path, associated with centrally-concentrated starbursts, leaving an inverse age gradient and smaller half-light radius., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Stroke survivors show greater postural oscillations and altered muscular activation compared to healthy controls. This results in difficulties in walking and standing, and in an increased risk of falls. A proper control of the trunk is related to a stable walk and to a lower falling risk; to this extent, rehabilitative protocols are currently working on core stability. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of trunk and balance training performed with a new robotic device designed for evaluation and training of balance and core stability, in improving the recovery of chronic stroke patients compared with a traditional physical therapy program. Thirty chronic stroke patients, randomly divided in two groups, either underwent a traditional rehabilitative protocol, or a robot-based program. Each patient was assessed before and after the rehabilitation and at 3-months follow-up with clinical and robot-based evaluation exercises focused on static and dynamic balance and trunk control. Results from clinical scores showed an improvement in both groups in balance and trunk control. Robot-based indices analysis indicated that the experimental group showed greater improvements in proprioceptive control, reactive balance and postural control in unstable conditions, compared to the control group, showing an improved trunk control with reduced compensatory strategies at the end of the training. Moreover, the experimental group had an increased retention of the benefits obtained with training at 3 months follow up. These results support the idea that such robotic device is a promising tool for stroke rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVEThe objective of this study was to present the authors’ 19-year experience treating metopic craniosynostosis by using an endoscopy-assisted technique and postoperative cranial orthotic therapy. The authors also aimed to provide a comprehensive, comparative statistical analysis of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) versus open surgery in reports previously published in the literature (through 2014) regarding only patients with metopic synostosis.METHODSA total of 141 patients with single-suture metopic nonsyndromic craniosynostosis sutures were treated between 1998 and 2017 by endoscopically resecting the synostosed bone followed by postoperative custom cranial orthosis use. All data used in the case series were collected prospectively and stored in a secure database. A comprehensive literature review was performed that included all previous case series reporting common surgical performance measures. A statistical comparison of traditional open methods versus MIS techniques was performed with regard to age, length of hospital stay (LOS), surgical time, estimated blood loss (EBL), and transfusion rate.RESULTSThe mean age at the time of surgery in the current series was 4.1 months. The mean EBL was 33 ml (range 5–250 ml). One patient underwent an intraoperative blood transfusion and 5 underwent postoperative blood transfusion for a total transfusion rate of 4.3%. The mean operating time was 56 minutes. Ninety-eight percent of patients were discharged on the 1st postoperative day. The median size of the removed synostosed bone was 0.6 cm × 10 cm. The primary goal of achieving correction of the forehead deformity was obtained in 94% of the patients. One hundred eight patients presented with hypotelorism (76.6%). Those with a minimum 1-year follow-up achieved 99% correction (n = 97). Six patients younger than 1 year had not achieved correction at the time of follow-up (6%). There were no intra- or postoperative deaths. One patient had a temporary contact dermatitis to the helmet materials and 2 patients developed pseudomeningoceles, which were successfully treated with a lumbar drain and/or spinal tap. No patient required nor underwent a second surgical procedure. Regarding the previously published literature through 2014, the reported EBL in patients who underwent MIS versus traditional open methods was 54.7 ml versus 224 ml, respectively. The reported average age for patients undergoing MIS versus traditional open methods was 3.8 months versus 11.5 months. The average LOS for patients undergoing MIS versus traditional open methods was 1.7 days versus 3.7 days. The average reported surgical time for those undergoing MIS versus traditional open methods was 66.7 minutes versus 223.7 minutes. The transfusion rate for patients undergoing MIS versus traditional open methods was 22% versus 77%. All of the above differences demonstrated statistical significance.CONCLUSIONSThe authors’ team has safely and effectively performed 141 metopic craniosynostosis corrections over the past 19 years, with excellent outcomes. Literature review comparing metrics such as LOS, EBL, operating time, and transfusion rate demonstrates a statistically significant improvement in all commonly reported measurements. MIS techniques are safe and effective and should be offered to parents and patients as an option at craniofacial centers treating this condition.

Naked mole-rats are highly vocal, eusocial, subterranean rodents with, counterintuitively, poor hearing. The causes underlying their altered hearing are unknown. Moreover, whether altered hearing is degenerate or adaptive to their unique lifestyles is controversial. We used various methods to identify the factors contributing to altered hearing in naked and the related Damaraland mole-rats and to examine whether these alterations result from relaxed or adaptive selection. Remarkably, we found that cochlear amplification was absent from both species despite normal prestin function in outer hair cells isolated from naked mole-rats. Instead, loss of cochlear amplification appears to result from abnormal hair bundle morphologies observed in both species. By exploiting a well-curated deafness phenotype-genotype database, we identified amino acid substitutions consistent with abnormal hair bundle morphology and reduced hearing sensitivity. Amino acid substitutions were found in unique groups of six hair bundle link proteins. Molecular evolutionary analyses revealed shifts in selection pressure at both the gene and the codon level for five of these six hair bundle link proteins. Substitutions in three of these proteins are associated exclusively with altered hearing. Altogether, our findings identify the likely mechanism of altered hearing in African mole-rats, making them the only identified mammals naturally lacking cochlear amplification. Moreover, our findings suggest that altered hearing in African mole-rats is adaptive, perhaps tailoring hearing to eusocial and subterranean lifestyles. Finally, our work reveals multiple, unique evolutionary trajectories in African mole-rat hearing and establishes species members as naturally occurring disease models to investigate human hearing loss.

Naked mole-rats are extremely social and extremely vocal rodents, displaying a wide range of functionally distinct call types and vocalizing almost continuously. Their vocalizations are low frequency, and a behavioral audiogram has shown that naked mole-rats, like other subterranean mammals, hear only low frequencies. Hence, the frequency range of their hearing and vocalizations appears to be well matched. However, even at low frequencies, naked mole-rats show very poor auditory thresholds, suggesting vocal communication may be effective only over short distances. However, in a tunnel environment where low frequency sounds propagate well and background noise is low, it may be that vocalizations travel considerable distances at suprathreshold intensities. Here, we confirmed hearing sensitivity using the auditory brainstem response; we characterized signature and alarm calls in intensity and frequency domains and we measured the effects of propagation through tubes with the diameter of naked mole-rat tunnels. Signature calls-used for intimate communication-could travel 3-8 m at suprathreshold intensities, and alarm calls (lower frequency and higher intensity), could travel up to 15 m. Despite this species' poor hearing sensitivity, the naked mole-rat displays a functional, coupled auditory-vocal communication system-a hallmark principle of acoustic communication systems across taxa.

We present a comparative study of the relation between the aperture-based gas-phase metallicity and three structural parameters of star-forming galaxies: mass ($\mathrm{M \equiv M_*}$), average potential ($\Phi \equiv \mathrm{M_*/R_e}$) and average surface mass density ($\Sigma \equiv \mathrm{M_*/R_e^2}$; where $\mathrm{R_e}$ is the effective radius). We use a volume-limited sample drawn from the publicly available SDSS DR7, and base our analysis on aperture-matched sampling by selecting sets of galaxies where the SDSS fibre probes a fixed fraction of $\mathrm{R_e}$. We find that between 0.5 and 1.5 $\mathrm{R_e}$, the gas-phase metallicity correlates more tightly with $\Phi$ than with either $\mathrm{M}$ or $\Sigma$, in that for all aperture-matched samples, the potential-metallicity relation has (i) less scatter, (ii) higher Spearman rank correlation coefficient and (iii) less residual trend with $\mathrm{R_e}$ than either the mass-metallicity relation and the average surface density-metallicity relation. Our result is broadly consistent with the current models of gas enrichment and metal loss. Essentials The long-term risk of recurrence and death after distal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is uncertain. We included subjects with first proximal or isolated distal DVT (IDDVT) and no pulmonary embolism. The risk of symptomatic and asymptomatic recurrence is lower after IDDVT (vs. proximal). IDDVT may be associated with a lower long-term risk of death, especially after unprovoked DVT. SummaryBackground A few studies have focused on the risk of recurrence after first acute isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (IDDVT) compared with proximal DVT (PDVT), whereas the incremental risk of death has never been explored beyond the first 3 years after acute event. Methods Our single-center cohort study included patients with first symptomatic acute PDVT or IDDVT. Patients were excluded if they had concomitant pulmonary embolism (PE) or prior venous thromboembolism. The primary outcomes were symptomatic objectively diagnosed recurrent PDVT or PE and all-cause death. Results In total, 4759 records were screened and 831 subjects included: 202 had symptomatic IDDVT and 629 had PDVT. The median age was 66 years and 50.5% were women. A total of 125 patients had recurrent PDVT or PE during 3175 patient-years of follow-up: 109 events occurred after PDVT (17.3%) and 16 after IDDVT (7.9%). Annual recurrence rates were 4.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.7–5.4%) and 2.0% (95% CI, 1.1–3.2%), respectively, for an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for IDDVT patients of 0.32 (95% CI, 0.19–0.55). Death occurred in 263 patients (31.6% [95% CI, 28.6–34.9%]) during 5469 patient-years of follow-up for an overall annual incidence rate of 4.8% (95% CI, 4.2–5.4%). The mortality rate was 33.5% (n = 211) in PDVT patients and 25.7% (n = 52) in IDDVT patients. The long-term hazard of death appeared lower for IDDVT patients (aHR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.55–1.02]), especially after unprovoked events (aHR, 0.58 [95% CI, 0.26–1.31]). Conclusions Compared with PDVT, IDDVT patients were at a lower risk of recurrent VTE. The risk of death appeared lower after IDDVT during a median follow-up of 7.6 years.

Alabastro listato or fiorito of Hierapolis in Phrygia was a prestigious coloured marble widely used in Roman architecture and decoration. This stone is generally identified in artefacts on autoptic examination, but it may sometimes be confused with alabasters of different provenances. This study describes a simple, but effective, scientific method to contribute to the determination of Hierapolis alabaster. Due to its unique genetic context, it is characterized by a distinctive carbon isotope signature. A comparison between the stable carbon isotope data from this paper and from the literature confirms the uniqueness of the isotopic character of Hierapolis alabaster. Carbon isotopes can ensure a reliably provenance attribution of the alabaster artefacts along with visual recognition by an expert eye.

Stellar population parameters correlate with a range of galaxy properties, but it is unclear which relations are causal and which are the result of another underlying trend. In this series, we quantitatively compare trends between stellar population properties and galaxy structural parameters in order to determine which relations are intrinsically tighter, and are therefore more likely to reflect a causal relation. Specifically, we focus on the galaxy structural parameters of mass $M$, gravitational potential $\Phi\sim M/R_e$, and surface mass density $\Sigma\sim M/R_e^2$. In Barone et al. (2018) we found that for early-type galaxies the age-$\Sigma$ and [Z/H]-$\Phi$ relations show the least intrinsic scatter as well as the least residual trend with galaxy size. In this work we study the ages and metallicities measured from full spectral fitting of 2085 star-forming galaxies from the SDSS Legacy Survey, selected so all galaxies in the sample are probed to one effective radius. As with the trends found in early-type galaxies, we find that in star-forming galaxies age correlates best with stellar surface mass density, and [Z/H] correlates best with gravitational potential. We discuss multiple mechanisms that could lead to these scaling relations. For the [Z/H]--$\Phi$ relation we conclude that gravitational potential is the primary regulator of metallicity, via its relation to the gas escape velocity. The age--$\Sigma$ relation is consistent with compact galaxies forming earlier, as higher gas fractions in the early universe cause old galaxies to form more compactly during their in-situ formation phase, and may be reinforced by compactness-related quenching mechanisms., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 20 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

The Rosario segment of the Early Cretaceous Alisitos oceanic magmatic arc in Baja California displays a record of arc-axis sedimentation and volcanism that is well preserved in outcrops within a southern volcano-bounded and a northern fault-bounded basin that flanked an intervening subaerial edifice. This record includes volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that range from felsic to mafic in composition. Volcaniclastic/tuffaceous sandstone samples from two previously published measured sections are mainly composed of volcanic clasts with moderate plagioclase content. Locally quartz and/or potassium feldspar are present in trace to moderate amounts. The proportions of volcanic lithic types exhibiting vitric, microlitic, lathwork, and felsitic textures are highly variable with no distinct stratigraphic trends, likely as a function of the mixed styles of eruption and magma compositions that produced pyroclasts, as well as erosion-produced epiclastic debris. The volcaniclastic fill of the basins is consistent with an oceanic arc setting, except for the relatively high felsitic volcanic lithic content, likely associated with subaerial, as opposed to the more common submarine felsic magmatism associated with arc extension in oceanic settings. There are no major differences in compositional modes of tuff and sandstone between the fault-bounded and volcano-bounded basin strata, even though they exhibit distinctly different volcaniclastic facies. This suggests that proximal arc-axis basins of varying types around a single major subaerial edifice provide a faithful record of volcanic trends in the arc segment, regardless of variation in transport and depositional processes.

In this paper, we describe the eigenstructure and the Jordan form of the Fourier transform matrix generated by a primitive N -th root of unity in a field of characteristic 2. We find that the only eigenvalue is λ = 1 and its eigenspace has dimension [ N 4 ] + 1 ; we provide a basis of eigenvectors and a Jordan basis. The problem has already been solved, for number theoretic transforms, in any other finite characteristic. However, in characteristic 2 classical results about geometric multiplicity do not apply and we have to resort to different techniques in order to determine a basis of eigenvectors and a Jordan basis. We make use of a modified version of the Vandermonde's formula, which applies to matrices whose entries are powers of elements of the form x + x − 1 .

Barone explores the relationship between young-Earth creationism and museums, focusing on creationist engagement with natural history museums. Arguing that young-Earth creationism is a social movement primarily focused on cultural reproduction, she examines the use of mobile apps and video-sharing technologies as methods for undermining secular scientific authority in museums. Creationist YouTube tours have become a popular method of subverting the authority of the secular museum for millions of visitors at home, while mobile apps work alongside other web-based written guides to facilitate the reinterpretation of museum displays. As mediators, these tools for young-Earth creationists become invisible tour guides, negotiating the way information reaches the visitor and, as a result, the way mainstream science is accepted or rejected.

We present the second major release of data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Data Release Two includes data for 1559 galaxies, about 50% of the full survey. Galaxies included have a redshift range 0.004 < z < 0.113 and a large stellar mass range 7.5 < log (M_star/M_sun) < 11.6. The core data for each galaxy consist of two primary spectral cubes covering the blue and red optical wavelength ranges. For each primary cube we also provide three spatially binned spectral cubes and a set of standardised aperture spectra. For each core data product we provide a set of value-added data products. This includes all emission line value-added products from Data Release One, expanded to the larger sample. In addition we include stellar kinematic and stellar population value-added products derived from absorption line measurements. The data are provided online through Australian Astronomical Optics' Data Central. We illustrate the potential of this release by presenting the distribution of ~350,000 stellar velocity dispersion measurements from individual spaxels as a function of R/R_e, divided in four galaxy mass bins. In the highest stellar mass bin (log (M_star/M_sun)>11), the velocity dispersion strongly increases towards the centre, whereas below log (M_star/M_sun), 22 pages, 14 figures. MRI provides considerable advantages for imaging of patients with peritoneal tumor. Its inherently superior contrast resolution compared with computed tomography allows MRI to more accurately depict small peritoneal tumors that are often missed on other imaging tests. Combining different contrast mechanisms, including diffusion-weighted MRI and gadolinium-enhanced MRI, provides a powerful tool for preoperative and surveillance imaging in patients being considered for cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

In this paper, we introduce cosine transforms over fields of characteristic 2. Our approach complements previous definitions of finite field trigonometric transforms, which only hold for fields whose characteristic is an odd prime. Besides introducing some new concepts related to trigonometry in finite fields, we discuss the eigenstructure and other important properties of the proposed transforms.

The effects of amino acid supply and insulin infusion on skin protein kinetics (fractional synthesis rate (FSR), fractional breakdown rate (FBR), and net balance (NB)) in pigs were investigated. Four-month-old pigs were divided into four groups as follows: control, insulin (INS), amino acid (AA), and INS + AA groups based on the nutritional and hormonal conditions. l-[ring-(13)C6]Phenylalanine was infused. FBR was estimated from the enrichment ratio of arterial phenylalanine to intracellular free phenylalanine. Plasma INS was increased (p < 0.05) in the INS and INS + AA groups. Plasma glucose was maintained by infusion of glucose in the groups receiving INS. The interventions did not change the NB of skin protein. However, the interventions affected the FSR and FBR differently. An infusion of INS significantly increased both FSR and FBR, although AA infusion did not. When an AA infusion was added to the infusion of insulin (INS + AA group), FSR and FBR were both lower when compared with the INS group. Our data demonstrate that in anesthetized pigs INS infusion did not exert an anabolic effect, but rather it increased AA cycling into and out of skin protein. Because co-infusion of AAs with INS ameliorated this effect, it is likely that the increased AA cycling during INS infusion was related to AA supply. Although protein kinetics were affected by both INS and AAs, none of the interventions affected the skin protein deposition. Thus, skin protein content is closely regulated under normal circumstances and is not subject to transient changes in AAs or hormonal concentrations.

The study of narrative has focused on the narrator, often overlooking the transactional and relational role of the interlocutor, particularly in doctor–patient interactions where interactants co-construct the case. However, the role of the doctor as a narrative facilitator has rarely been explored. Using a case study from a doctor–patient interaction, this fine-grained discourse analysis demonstrates how a doctor assists his patient to construct her narrative while also enacting salient aspects of his own identity. The doctor uses discursive strategies, such as alignment, repair moves, and mitigation, which act as vehicles through which the doctor constructs his professional identity, providing ‘space’ for the patient's narrative, and assist in building trust and rapport.
