The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a distinctive mammal known for its reliance on a diet primarily consisting of bamboo. The gut microbiota and overall health of animals are strongly influenced by diets and environments. Therefore, conducting research to explore the taxonomical and functional variances within the gut microbiota of red pandas exposed to various dietary and environmental conditions could shed light on the dynamic complexities of their microbial communities. In this study, normal fecal samples were obtained from red pandas residing in captive and semi‐free environments under different dietary regimes and used for metabolomic, 16S rRNA, and metagenomic sequencing analysis, with the pandas classified into four distinct cohorts according to diet and environment. In addition, metagenomic sequencing was conducted on mucus fecal samples to elucidate potential etiological agents of disease. Results revealed an increased risk of gastrointestinal diseases in red pandas consuming bamboo shoots due to the heightened presence of pathogenic bacteria, although an increased presence of microbiota‐derived tryptophan metabolites appeared to facilitate intestinal balance. The red pandas fed bamboo leaves also exhibited a decrease in gut microbial diversity, which may be attributed to the antibacterial flavonoids and lower protein levels in leaves. Notably, red pandas residing in semi‐free environments demonstrated an enriched gut microbial diversity. Moreover, the occurrence of mucus secretion may be due to an increased presence of species associated with diarrhea and a reduced level of microbiota‐derived tryptophan metabolites. In summary, our findings substantiate the influential role of diet and environment in modulating the gut microbiota of red pandas, offering potential implications for improved captive breeding practices. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) emulsion is widely used as a coating material in the impregnation process for preparing polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) needle felts due to its excellent chemical stability and good mechanical properties. However, the effect of emulsion impregnation coating on the filtration performance of needle felts is still under debate. Moreover, in industrial applications with high temperatures, the service life of needle felts is directly affected by their thermal stability, but the pyrolysis and kinetic properties of PPS needle felt after PTFE emulsion impregnation post-processing have rarely been quantitatively investigated. In this study, the PPS fiber/PTFE emulsion (PPS/PTFE) composite needle felt was fabricated by a direct impregnation process. The pressure drop characteristic and mechanical collection efficiency of PPS needle felt and PPS/PTFE composite needle felt were comprehensively evaluated. It was found that the PTFE emulsion impregnation coating not only increases the pressure drop, but also decreases the collection efficiency. More specifically, for particles having a size below 2.5 μm, the decrement of collection efficiency further increases with the decrease of particle size, but the mechanical collection efficiency of PPS/PTFE composite needle felt for particles having larger size is almost the same as that of PPS needle felt. Three emulsion impregnation coating distribution models were inferred to systematically explain this experimental phenomenon. Additionally, the thermal degradation process of PPS needle felt and PPS/PTFE composite needle felt was analyzed, and several typical pyrolysis kinetic parameters were also determined theoretically. It was confirmed that the PTFE emulsion impregnation coatings can enhance the thermal stability of PPS needle felts. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Homeobox D9 (HOXD9), a member of the HOX family of transcription factors, plays a driver role in development of multiple cancers. Angiopoietin-2 (ANGPT2) is reportedly to facilitate angiogenesis, growth and metastasis in various cancers, including lung cancer. In addition, blocking ANGPT2 can effectively improve cancer immunotherapy via downregulation of Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1). The purpose of this study was to elucidate the role of HOXD9 in NSCLC and whether ANGPT2 is required for HOXD9-mediated malignant behaviors of NSCLC cells. By performing a series of in vitro functional experiments, we found that knockdown of HOXD9 induced proliferative inhibition, cell cycle G1 arrest, apoptosis, migratory suppression and invasive repression of NSCLC cells. Reduced PD-L1 expression in NSCLC cells was observed after HOXD9 silencing. Besides, HOXD9 deletion decreased the expression of ANGPT2 in NSCLC cells. In line with this, HOXD9 overexpression led to opposite alteration in NSCLC cells. Mechanistically, ANGPT2 was transcriptionally activated by HOXD9. Forced expression of ANGPT2 significantly regulated HOXD9-mediated malignant phenotypes, and enhanced PD-L1 expression of NSCLC cells. Carbon/epoxy composites have been widely used in the aviation industry. However, the flammability of epoxy resins is of great concern within the industry. Currently, vacuum bag and autoclave forming processes are the most commonly used processes for composites. To compare the thermal and fire properties of carbon/epoxy laminate composites manufactured using these two forming processes, a comprehensive experimental investigation and theoretical analysis was carried out in this work. The glass transition temperatures and epoxy resin matrix content in composites were determined. Several thermal and fire properties were quantitatively evaluated, including onset decomposition temperature, time to ignition, mass loss rate (MLR), and heat release rate (HR). The morphologies of specimens before combustion were also observed. For vacuum bag (VB)‐C/ELC and A‐C/ELC, the critical heat flux (14.48 and 20.56 kW m−2), thermal response parameter (165.56 and 204.49 kW s1/2 m−2), heat of gasification (9.13 and 20.10 MJ kg−1), and theoretical heat of combustion (33.27 and 43.82 MJ kg−1) were calculated and compared using the thermal behavior model, MLR model, and heat release rate model, respectively. It has been found that the forming process can significantly affect the fire properties of carbon/epoxy laminate composites. More specifically, the carbon/epoxy laminate composites formed using autoclave forming processes have more combustion resistance and thus have improved fire properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to structural characteristics, composites are classified as laminated structure and sandwich structure. Carbon/epoxy laminate and foam core sandwich composite are the most commonly used laminate and sandwich structure material in the aircraft industry. The flammability of epoxy resins and foam core material is an inherent hazard. Many previous studies focused primarily on their mechanical properties, while the studies on the thermal and fire properties of carbon/epoxy laminate and its foam core sandwich composite have rarely conducted. Therefore, to characterize their thermal and fire properties, a comprehensive experimental investigation and theoretical analysis were carried out in this work using thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimeter, vertical/horizontal burning tests, limiting oxygen index and scanning electron microscope tests. Several typical characteristic parameters were obtained and analyzed, such as pyrolysis temperature, heat release rate, mass loss, flaming spread rate and limiting oxygen index. These experimental data coupled with theoretical analysis can provide support for fire risk assessment and fire protection design in aircrafts. The carbon/epoxy laminate and foam core sandwich composite are both characterized as the thermally thick materials. The ignition models and mass loss rate models were obtained. Foam core material negatively affects most of the thermal and fire properties of sandwich composite, but the foam core sandwich composite has self-extinguishing behavior during horizontal burning tests, whose LOI is higher than that of carbon/epoxy laminate. Thus, an important conclusion was reached that the ignition position and flame spread direction have critical effect on the fire behavior of foam core material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
