Abstract

It is well known that if $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is an analytic set of Hausdorff dimension $a$, then $\dim_H(\pi_VA)=\min\{a,k\}$ for a.e.\ $V\in G(n,k)$, where $G(n,k)$ denotes the set of all $k$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\pi_V$ is the orthogonal projection of $A$ onto $V$. In this paper we study how large the exceptional set \begin{equation*} \{V\in G(n,k) \mid \dim_H(\pi_V A) < s\} \end{equation*} can be for a given $s\le\min\{a,k\}.$ We improve previously known estimates on the dimension of the exceptional set, and we show that our estimates are sharp for $k=1$ and for $k=n-1$. Hence we completely resolve this question for $n=3$.

2. Borel graphable equivalence relations

Abstract

This paper is devoted to the study of analytic equivalence relations which are Borel graphable, i.e. which can be realized as the connectedness relation of a Borel graph. Our main focus is the question of which analytic equivalence relations are Borel graphable. First, we study an equivalence relation arising from the theory of countable admissible ordinals and show that it is Borel graphable if and only if there is a non-constructible real. As a corollary of the proof, we construct an analytic equivalence relation which is (provably in ZFC) not Borel graphable and an effectively analytic equivalence relation which is Borel graphable but not effectively Borel graphable. Next, we study analytic equivalence relations given by the isomorphism relation for some class of countable structures. We show that all such equivalence relations are Borel graphable, which implies that for every Borel action of $S_\infty$, the associated orbit equivalence relation is Borel graphable. This leads us to study the class of Polish groups whose Borel actions always give rise to Borel graphable orbit equivalence relations; we refer to such groups as graphic groups. We show that besides $S_\infty$, the class of graphic groups includes all connected Polish groups and is closed under countable products. We finish by studying structural properties of the class of Borel graphable analytic equivalence relations and by considering two variations on Borel graphability: a generalization with hypegraphs instead of graphs and an analogue of Borel graphability in the setting of computably enumerable equivalence relations., Comment: 60 pages, updated to add references

6. A Note on a Conjecture of Sacks: It is Harder to Embed Height Three Partial Orders than Height Two Partial Orders

Abstract

A long-standing conjecture of Sacks states that it is provable in ZFC that every locally countable partial order of size continuum embeds into the Turing degrees. We show that this holds for partial orders of height two, but provide evidence that it is hard to extend this result even to partial orders of height three. In particular, we show that the result for height two partial orders holds both in certain extensions of ZF with only limited forms of choice and in the Borel setting (where the partial orders and embeddings are required to be Borel measurable), but that the analogous result for height three partial orders fails in both of these settings. We also formulate a general obstacle to embedding partial orders into the Turing degrees, which explains why our particular proof for height two partial orders cannot be extended to height three partial orders, even in ZFC. Abstract

Suppose you have an uncomputable set $X$ and you want to find a set $A$, all of whose infinite subsets compute $X$. There are several ways to do this, but all of them seem to produce a set $A$ which is fairly sparse. We show that this is necessary in the following technical sense: if $X$ is uncomputable and $A$ is a set of positive lower density then $A$ has an infinite subset which does not compute $X$. We also prove an analogous result for PA degree: if $X$ is uncomputable and $A$ is a set of positive lower density then $A$ has an infinite subset which is not of PA degree. We will show that these theorems are sharp in certain senses and also prove a quantitative version formulated in terms of Kolmogorov complexity. 9. Part 1 of Martin's Conjecture for order-preserving and measure-preserving functions

Abstract

Martin's Conjecture is a proposed classification of the definable functions on the Turing degrees. It is usually divided into two parts, the first of which classifies functions which are not above the identity and the second of which classifies functions which are above the identity. Slaman and Steel proved the second part of the conjecture for Borel functions which are order-preserving (i.e. which preserve Turing reducibility). We prove the first part of the conjecture for all order-preserving functions. We do this by introducing a class of functions on the Turing degrees which we call "measure-preserving" and proving that part 1 of Martin's Conjecture holds for all measure-preserving functions and also that all non-trivial order-preserving functions are measure-preserving. Our result on measure-preserving functions has several other consequences for Martin's Conjecture, including an equivalence between part 1 of the conjecture and a statement about the structure of the Rudin-Keisler order on ultrafilters on the Turing degrees., Comment: 44 pages; updated to correct the proof of Theorem 4.12 and fix some typos

Abstract

The Solecki dichotomy in descriptive set theory and the Posner-Robinson theorem in computability theory bear a superficial resemblance to each other and can sometimes be used to prove the same results, but do not have any obvious direct relationship. We show that in fact there is such a relationship by formulating slightly weakened versions of the two theorems and showing that, when combined with determinacy principles, each one yields a short proof of the other. This relationship also holds for generalizations of the Solecki dichotomy and the Posner-Robinson theorem to higher levels of the Borel/hyperarithmetic hierarchy., Comment: 11 pages

11. Sparse tree-based initialization for neural networks

Abstract

Dedicated neural network (NN) architectures have been designed to handle specific data types (such as CNN for images or RNN for text), which ranks them among state-of-the-art methods for dealing with these data. Unfortunately, no architecture has been found for dealing with tabular data yet, for which tree ensemble methods (tree boosting, random forests) usually show the best predictive performances. In this work, we propose a new sparse initialization technique for (potentially deep) multilayer perceptrons (MLP): we first train a tree-based procedure to detect feature interactions and use the resulting information to initialize the network, which is subsequently trained via standard stochastic gradient strategies. Numerical experiments on several tabular data sets show that this new, simple and easy-to-use method is a solid concurrent, both in terms of generalization capacity and computation time, to default MLP initialization and even to existing complex deep learning solutions. In fact, this wise MLP initialization raises the resulting NN methods to the level of a valid competitor to gradient boosting when dealing with tabular data. Besides, such initializations are able to preserve the sparsity of weights introduced in the first layers of the network through training. This fact suggests that this new initializer operates an implicit regularization during the NN training, and emphasizes that the first layers act as a sparse feature extractor (as for convolutional layers in CNN).

14. Incompleteness and Jump Hierarchies

Abstract

This paper is an investigation of the relationship between G\"odel's second incompleteness theorem and the well-foundedness of jump hierarchies. It follows from a classic theorem of Spector's that the relation $\{(A,B) \in \mathbb{R}^2 : \mathcal{O}^A \leq_H B\}$ is well-founded. We provide an alternative proof of this fact that uses G\"odel's second incompleteness theorem instead of the theory of admissible ordinals. We then derive a semantic version of the second incompleteness theorem, originally due to Mummert and Simpson, from this result. Finally, we turn to the calculation of the ranks of reals in this well-founded relation. We prove that, for any $A\in\mathbb{R}$, if the rank of $A$ is $\alpha$, then $\omega_1^A$ is the $(1 + \alpha)^{\text{th}}$ admissible ordinal. Abstract

Despite advances in supportive therapy to prevent complications of sickle cell disease (SCD), access to care is not universal. Hematopoietic cell transplantation is, to date, the only curative therapy for SCD, but its application is limited by availability of a suitable HLA-matched donor and lack of awareness of the benefits of transplant. Included in this study are 1000 recipients of HLA-identical sibling transplants performed between 1986 and 2013 and reported to the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Eurocord, and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. The primary endpoint was event-free survival, defined as being alive without graft failure; risk factors were studied using a Cox regression models. The median age at transplantation was 9 years, and the median follow-up was longer than 5 years. Most patients received a myeloablative conditioning regimen (n = 873; 87%); the remainder received reduced-intensity conditioning regimens (n = 125; 13%). Bone marrow was the predominant stem cell source (n = 839; 84%); peripheral blood and cord blood progenitors were used in 73 (7%) and 88 (9%) patients, respectively. The 5-year event-free survival and overall survival were 91.4% (95% confidence interval, 89.6%-93.3%) and 92.9% (95% confidence interval, 91.1%-94.6%), respectively. Event-free survival was lower with increasing age at transplantation (hazard ratio [HR], 1.09; P < .001) and higher for transplantations performed after 2006 (HR, 0.95; P = .013). Twenty-three patients experienced graft failure, and 70 patients (7%) died, with the most common cause of death being infection. The excellent outcome of a cohort transplanted over the course of 3 decades confirms the role of HLA-identical sibling transplantation for children and adults with SCD.

23. Results on Martin's Conjecture

Abstract

Martin's conjecture is an attempt to classify the behavior of all definable functions on the Turing degrees under strong set theoretic hypotheses. Very roughly it says that every such function is either eventually constant, eventually equal to the identity function or eventually equal to a transfinite iterate of the Turing jump. It is typically divided into two parts: the first part states that every function is either eventually constant or eventually above the identity function and the second part states that every function which is above the identity is eventually equal to a transfinite iterate of the jump. If true, it would provide an explanation for the unique role of the Turing jump in computability theory and rule out many types of constructions on the Turing degrees.In this thesis we will introduce a few tools which we use to prove several cases of Martin's conjecture. It turns out that both these tools and these results on Martin's conjecture have some interesting consequences both for Martin's conjecture and for a few related topics.The main tool that we introduce is a basis theorem for perfect sets, improving a theorem due to Groszek and Slaman. We also introduce a general framework for proving certain special cases of Martin's conjecture which unifies a few pre-existing proofs. We will use these tools to prove three main results about Martin's conjecture: that it holds for regressive functions on the hyperarithmetic degrees (answering a question of Slaman and Steel), that part 1 holds for order preserving functions on the Turing degrees, and that part 1 holds for a class of functions that we introduce, called measure preserving functions.This last result has several interesting consequences for the study of Martin's conjecture. In particular, it shows that part 1 of Martin's conjecture is equivalent to a statement about the Rudin-Keisler order on ultrafilters on the Turing degrees. This suggests several possible strategies for working on part 1 of Martin's conjecture, which we will discuss.The basis theorem that we use to prove these results also has some applications outside of Martin's conjecture. We will use it to prove a few theorems related to Sacks' question about whether it is provable in ZFC that every locally countable partial order of size continuum embeds into the Turing degrees. We will show that in a certain extension of ZF (which is incompatible with ZFC), this holds for all partial orders of height two, but not for all partial orders of height three. We will also present an obstacle to embedding height three partial orders into the Turing degrees in ZFC which shows that one of the most natural ways of trying to do so cannot work.We will end the thesis with a list of open questions related to Martin's conjecture, which we hope will stimulate further research.

Abstract

Asparaginase is an essential component of combination chemotherapy for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The value of asparaginase was further addressed in a group of non-very high-risk patients by comparing prolonged (long-asparaginase) versus standard (short-asparaginase) native E. coli asparaginase treatment in a randomized part of the phase III 58951 trial of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Children’s Leukemia Group. The main endpoint was disease-free survival. Overall, 1,552 patients were randomly assigned to long-asparaginase (775 patients) or short-asparaginase (777 patients). Patients with grade ≥2 allergy to native E. coli asparaginase were switched to equivalent doses of Erwinia or pegylated E. coli asparaginase. The 8-year disease-free survival rate (±standard error) was 87.0±1.3% in the long-asparaginase group and 84.4±1.4% in the short-asparaginase group (hazard ratio: 0.87; P=0.33) and the 8-year overall survival rate was 92.6±1.0% and 91.3±1.2% respectively (hazard ratio: 0.89; P=0.53). An exploratory analysis suggested that the impact of long-asparaginase was beneficial in the National Cancer Institute standard-risk group with regards to disease-free survival (hazard ratio: 0.70; P=0.057), but far less so with regards to overall survival (hazard ratio: 0.89). The incidences of grade 3-4 infection during consolidation (25.2% versus 14.4%) and late intensification (22.6% versus 15.9%) and the incidence of grade 2-4 allergy were higher in the long-asparaginase arm (30% versus 21%). Abstract

International audience; Acute lymphoblastic leukemia of T cell lineage (T-ALL) is an aggressive ă malignant disease which accounts for 15 % of childhood ALL. T(11;14) is ă the more frequent chromosomal abnormality in childhood T-ALL, but its ă prognostic value remained controversial. Our aim was to analyze the ă outcome of childhood T-ALL with t(11;14) to know if the presence of this ă translocation is associated with a poor prognosis. We conducted a ă retrospective study from a series of 20 patients with t(11;14), treated ă in two consecutive trials from the European Organization for Research ă and Treatment of Cancer Children Leukemia Group over a 19-year period ă from 1989 to 2008. There were no significant differences between the 2 ă consecutive groups of patients with t(11;14) regarding the clinical and ă biological features at diagnosis. Among 19 patients who reached complete ă remission, 9 patients relapsed. We noticed 7 deaths all relapse- or ă failure-related. In the 58881 study, a presence of t(11;14) was ă associated with a poor outcome with an event-free survival at 5 years at ă 22.2 % versus 65.1 % for the non-t(11;14) T-ALL (p = 0.0004). In the ă more recent protocol, the outcome of T-ALL with t(11;14) reached that of ă non-t(11;14) T-ALL with an event-free survival at 5 years at 65.5 versus ă 74.9 % (p = 0.93). The presence of t(11;14) appeared as a poor ă prognostic feature in the 58881 trial whereas this abnormality no longer ă affected the outcome in the 58951 study. This difference is probably ă explained by the more intensive chemotherapy in the latest trial.

Abstract

Despite advances in supportive therapy to prevent complications of sickle cell disease (SCD), access to care is not universal. Hematopoietic cell transplantation is, to date, the only curative therapy for SCD, but its application is limited by availability of a suitable HLA-matched donor and lack of awareness of the benefits of transplant. Included in this study are 1000 recipients of HLA-identical sibling transplants performed between 1986 and 2013 and reported to the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Eurocord, and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. The primary endpoint was event-free survival, defined as being alive without graft failure; risk factors were studied using a Cox regression models. The median age at transplantation was 9 years, and the median follow-up was longer than 5 years. Most patients received a myeloablative conditioning regimen (n = 873; 87%); the remainder received reduced-intensity conditioning regimens (n = 125; 13%). Bone marrow was the predominant stem cell source (n = 839; 84%); peripheral blood and cord blood progenitors were used in 73 (7%) and 88 (9%) patients, respectively. The 5-year event-free survival and overall survival were 91.4% (95% confidence interval, 89.6%-93.3%) and 92.9% (95% confidence interval, 91.1%-94.6%), respectively. Event-free survival was lower with increasing age at transplantation (hazard ratio [HR], 1.09; < .001) and higher for transplantations performed after 2006 (HR, 0.95; = .013). Twenty-three patients experienced graft failure, and 70 patients (7%) died, with the most common cause of death being infection. The excellent outcome of a cohort transplanted over the course of 3 decades confirms the role of HLA-identical sibling transplantation for children and adults with SCD.
