The study of cosmic birefringence through Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments is a key research area in cosmology and particle physics, providing a critical test for Lorentz and CPT symmetries. This paper focuses on an upcoming CMB experiment in the mid-latitude of the Northern Hemisphere, and investigates the potential to detect anisotropies in cosmic birefringence. Applying a quadratic estimator on simulated polarization data, we reconstruct the power spectrum of anisotropic cosmic birefringence successfully and estimate constraints on the amplitude of the spectrum, $A_{\mathrm{CB}}$, assuming scale invariance. The forecast is based on a wide-scan observation strategy during winter, yielding an effective sky coverage of approximately 23.6%. We consider two noise scenarios corresponding to the short-term and long-term phases of the experiment. Our results show that with a small aperture telescope operating at 95/150GHz, the $2\sigma$ upper bound for $A_{\mathrm{CB}}$ can reach 0.017 under the low noise scenario when adopting the method of merging multi-frequency data in map domain, and merging multi-frequency data in spectrum domain tightens the limit by about 10%.A large-aperture telescope with the same bands is found to be more effective, tightening the $2\sigma$ upper limit to 0.0062., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures

In our previous study, we introduced a machine-learning technique, namely CMBFSCNN, for the removal of foreground contamination in cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization data. This method was successfully employed on actual observational data from the Planck mission. In this study, we extend our investigation by considering the CMB lensing effect in simulated data and utilizing the CMBFSCNN approach to recover the CMB lensing B-mode power spectrum from multi-frequency observational maps. Our method is first applied to simulated data with the performance of CMB-S4 experiment. We achieve reliable recovery of the noisy CMB Q (or U) maps with a mean absolute difference of $0.016\pm0.008\ \mu$K (or $0.021\pm0.002\ \mu$K) for the CMB-S4 experiment. To address the residual instrumental noise in the foreground-cleaned map, we employ a "half-split maps" approach, where the entire dataset is divided into two segments sharing the same sky signal but having uncorrelated noise. Using cross-correlation techniques between two recovered half-split maps, we effectively reduce instrumental noise effects at the power spectrum level. As a result, we achieve precise recovery of the CMB EE and lensing B-mode power spectra. Furthermore, we also extend our pipeline to full-sky simulated data with the performance of LiteBIRD experiment. As expected, various foregrounds are cleanly removed from the foreground contamination observational maps, and recovered EE and lensing B-mode power spectra exhibit excellent agreement with the true results. The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) method is commonly employed to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from multi-frequency observation maps. However, the performance of the ILC method tends to degrade when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is relatively low, particularly when measuring the primordial $B$-modes to detect the primordial gravitational waves. To address this issue, an enhanced version of the ILC method, known as constrained ILC, is proposed. This method is designed to be more suitable for situations with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by incorporating additional prior foreground information. In our study, we have modified the constraint Needlet ILC method and successfully improved its performance at low SNR. We illustrate our methods using mock data generated from the combination of WMAP, Planck and a ground-based experiment in the northern hemisphere, and the chosen noise level for the ground-based experiment are very conservative which can be easily achieved in the very near future. The results show that the level of foreground residual can be well controlled. In comparison to the standard NILC method, which introduces a bias to the tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$) of approximately $0.05$, the constrained NILC method exhibits a significantly reduced bias of only around $5\times10^{-3}$ towards $r$ which is much smaller than the statistical error.

Strongly correlated states are commonly emerged in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with magic-angle, where the electron-electron (e-e) interaction U becomes prominent relative to the small bandwidth W of the nearly flat band. However, the stringent requirement of this magic angle makes the sample preparation and the further application facing great challenges. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), we demonstrate that the correlation-induced symmetry-broken states can also be achieved in a 3.45{\deg} TBG, via engineering this non-magic-angle TBG into regimes of U/W > 1. We enhance the e-e interaction through controlling the microscopic dielectric environment by using a MoS2 substrate. Simultaneously, the bandwidth of the low-energy van Hove singularity (VHS) peak is reduced by enhancing the interlayer coupling via STM tip modulation. When partially filled, the VHS peak exhibits a giant splitting into two states flanked the Fermi level and shows a symmetry-broken LDOS distribution with a stripy charge order, which confirms the existence of strong correlation effect in our 3.45{\deg} TBG. Our result paves the way for the study and application of the correlation physics in TBGs with a wider range of twist angle.

The lensing effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is a powerful tool for our study of the distribution of matter in the universe. Currently, the quadratic estimator (EQ) method, which is widely used to reconstruct lensing potential, has been known to be sub-optimal for the low-noise levels polarization data from next-generation CMB experiments. To improve the performance of the reconstruction, other methods, such as the maximum likelihood estimator and machine learning algorithms are developed. In this work, we present a deep convolutional neural network model named the Residual Dense Local Feature U-net (RDLFUnet) for reconstructing the CMB lensing convergence field. By simulating lensed CMB data with different noise levels to train and test network models, we find that for noise levels less than $5\mu$K-arcmin, RDLFUnet can recover the input gravitational potential with a higher signal-to-noise ratio than the previous deep learning and the traditional QE methods at almost the entire observation scales., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

Primordial B-mode detection is one of the main goals of next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. Primordial B-modes are a unique signature of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). However, the gravitational interaction of CMB photons with large-scale structures will distort the primordial E modes, adding a lensing B-mode component to the primordial B-mode signal. Removing the lensing effect (`delensing') from observed CMB polarization maps will be necessary to improve the constraint of PGWs and obtain a primordial E-mode signal. Here, we introduce a deep convolutional neural network model named multi-input multi-output U-net (MIMO-UNet) to perform CMB delensing. The networks are trained on simulated CMB maps with size $20^{\circ} \times 20^{\circ}$. We first use MIMO-UNet to reconstruct the unlensing CMB polarization ($Q$ and $U$) maps from observed CMB maps. The recovered E-mode power spectrum exhibits excellent agreement with the primordial EE power spectrum. The recovery of the primordial B-mode power spectrum for noise levels of 0, 1, and 2 $\mu$K-arcmin is greater than 98\% at the angular scale of $\ell<150$. We additionally reconstruct the lensing B map from observed CMB maps. The recovery of the lensing B-mode power spectrum is greater than roughly 99\% at the scales of $\ell>200$. We delens observed B-mode power spectrum by subtracting reconstructed lensing B-mode spectrum. The recovery of tensor B-mode power spectrum for noise levels of 0, 1, 2 $\mu$K-arcmin is greater than 98 \% at the angular scales of $\ell<120$. The energy injected from dark matter annihilation and decay processes potentially raises the ionisation of the intergalactic medium and leaves visible footprints on the anisotropy maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Galactic foregrounds emission in the microwave bands contaminate the CMB measurement and may affect the search for dark matter's signature. In this paper, we construct a full CMB data and foreground simulation based on the design of the next-generation ground-based CMB experiments. The foreground residual after the components separation on maps is fully considered in our data analysis, accounting for various contamination from the emission of synchrotron, thermal dust, free-free and spinning dust. We analyse the corresponding sensitivity on dark matter parameters from the temperature and polarization maps, and we find that the CMB foregrounds leave a non-zero yet controllable impact on the sensitivity. Comparing with statistics-only analysis, the CMB foreground residual leads to a factor of at most 19% weakening on energy-injection constraints, depending on the specific dark matter process and experimental configuration. Primordial B-mode detection is one of the main goals of current and future cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. However, the weak B-mode signal is overshadowed by several Galactic polarized emissions, such as thermal dust emission and synchrotron radiation. Subtracting foreground components from CMB observations is one of the key challenges in searching for the primordial B-mode signal. Here, we construct a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model, called \texttt{CMBFSCNN} (Cosmic Microwave Background Foreground Subtraction with CNN), which can cleanly remove various foreground components from simulated CMB observational maps at the sensitivity of the CMB-S4 experiment. Noisy CMB Q (or U) maps are recovered with a mean absolute difference of $0.018 \pm 0.023\ \mu$K (or $0.021 \pm 0.028\ \mu$K). To remove the residual instrumental noise from the foreground-cleaned map, inspired by the needlet internal linear combination method, we divide the whole data set into two ``half-split maps,'' which share the same sky signal, but have uncorrelated noise, and perform a cross-correlation technique to reduce the instrumental noise effects at the power spectrum level. We find that the CMB EE and BB power spectra can be precisely recovered with significantly reduced noise effects. Finally, we apply this pipeline to current Planck observations. As expected, various foregrounds are cleanly removed from the Planck observational maps, with the recovered EE and BB power spectra being in good agreement with the official Planck results., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Time-ordered data (TOD) from ground-based CMB experiments are generally filtered before map-making to remove or reduce the contamination from the ground and the atmospheric emissions. However, when the observation region contains strong point sources, the filtering process will result in considerable leakage around the point sources in a measured CMB map, and leave spurious polarization signals. Therefore, such signals need to be assessed and removed before CMB science exploitation. In this work, we present a new method that we call "template fitting" and can effectively remove these leakage signals in pixel domain, not only satisfying the requirement for measuring primordial gravitational waves from CMB-$B$ modes, but also avoiding time-consuming operations on TOD., Comment: 13pages, 6 figures, 5 tables

The cosmic microwave background (CMB), carrying the inhomogeneous information of the very early universe, is of great significance for understanding the origin and evolution of our universe. However, observational CMB maps contain serious foreground contaminations from several sources, such as galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions. Here, we build a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to recover the tiny CMB signal from various huge foreground contaminations. Focusing on the CMB temperature fluctuations, we find that the CNN model can successfully recover the CMB temperature maps with high accuracy, and that the deviation of the recovered power spectrum $C_\ell$ is smaller than the cosmic variance at $\ell>10$. We then apply this method to the current Planck observation, and find that the recovered CMB is quite consistent with that disclosed by the Planck collaboration, which indicates that the CNN method can provide a promising approach to the component separation of CMB observations. Furthermore, we test the CNN method with simulated CMB polarization maps based on the CMB-S4 experiment. The result shows that both the EE and BB power spectra can be recovered with high accuracy. Therefore, this method will be helpful for the detection of primordial gravitational waves in current and future CMB experiments. The CNN is designed to analyze two-dimensional images, thus this method is not only able to process full-sky maps, but also partial-sky maps. In long-wavelength moir\'e superlattices of stacked transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), structural reconstruction ubiquitously occurs, which has reported to impact significantly their electronic properties. However, complete microscopic understandings of the interplay between the lattice reconstruction and alteration of electronic properties, and their further response to external perturbations in the reconstructed TMDs moir\'e superlattice are still lacking. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) combined with first-principles calculation, we study the strain-dependent structural reconstruction and its correlated electronic reconstruction in long-wavelength H-type WS$_{2}$ moir\'e superlattice at nanometer scale. We observe that the long-wavelength WS$_{2}$ moir\'e superlattices experiencing strong atomic reconstruction transform into a hexagonal array of screw dislocations separating large-sized H-stacked domains. Both the geometry and the moir\'e wavelength of the moir\'e superlattice are dramatically tuned by external intralayer heterostrain in our experiment. Remarkably, the STS measurements further demonstrate that the location of the K point in conduction band is modulated sensitively by strain-induced lattice deformation at nanometer scale in this system, with the maximum energy shift reaching up to 300 meV. Our results highlight that intralayer strain plays a vital role in determining structural and electronic properties in TMD moir\'e superlattice.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) not only have potential applications on spin qubit,but also serve as essential platforms to study the fundamental properties of Dirac fermions, such as Klein tunneling and Berry phase. By now, the study of quantum confinement in GQDs still attract much attention in condensed matter physics. In this article, we review the experimental progresses on quantum confinement in GQDs mainly by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Here, the GQDs are divided into Klein GQDs, bound-state GQDs and edge-terminated GQDs according to their different confinement strength. Based on the realization of quasi-bound states in Klein GQDs, external perpendicular magnetic field is utilized as a manipulation approach to trigger and control the novel properties by tuning Berry phase and electron-electron (e-e) interaction. The tip induced edge-free GQDs can serve as an intuitive mean to explore the broken symmetry states at nanoscale and single-electron accuracy, which are expected to be used in studying physical properties of different two-dimentional materials. A variety of exotic quantum phases of matter have been created by Van der Waals heterostructures. Moreover, these twisted heterostructures provide a feasible way of braiding correlation effect and nontrivial band topology together. Here, through a comprehensive spectrum study, we report the discovery of topological torus lattice in twisted mono-bilayer graphene. The strong Coulomb correlations give rise to an unusual charge localization behavior within the moir\'e supercell, leading to an electron crystal. The nontrivial band topology is encoded into the electron crystal, which would result in spatial modulated Chern numbers, and is evidenced by an emergent topological torus lattice state. Our result illustrates an efficient strategy for entwining and engineering topological physics with a strong electron correlation.

The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) is widely used to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from multi-frequency observation maps, especially for Satellite experiments with quasi-full sky coverage. We extend ILC method to CMB polarization map analysis with a small sky patch which is especially typical for ground-based experiments, by combing ILC with a template cleaning method which can give pure $B$ map free from $EB$ leakage caused by partial sky coverage. The feature of our methods is that we do the ILC analysis on pseudo-scalar $B$ maps, and the advantage is that it totally avoids the impact of $EB$ leakage on ILC, so that it can improve the efficiency of component separation dramatically. We demonstrate our methods with mock data of a future ground-based experiment with a deep survey on a clean patch in the northern sky, and the results show that the level of foreground residual can be well controlled, it biases the tensor to scalar ratio ($r$) at the order of $10^{-3}$ which is comparable to the statistical error by noise.

Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first CMB degree-scale polarimeter to be deployed on the Tibetan plateau at 5,250m above sea level. AliCPT-1 is a 90/150 GHz 72 cm aperture, two-lens refracting telescope cooled down to 4 K. Alumina lenses, 800mm in diameter, image the CMB in a 33.4{\deg} field of view on a 636mm wide focal plane. The modularized focal plane consists of dichroic polarization-sensitive Transition-Edge Sensors (TESes). Each module includes 1,704 optically active TESes fabricated on a 150mm diameter silicon wafer. Each TES array is read out with a microwave multiplexing readout system capable of a multiplexing factor up to 2,048. Such a large multiplexing factor has allowed the practical deployment of tens of thousands of detectors, enabling the design of a receiver that can operate up to 19 TES arrays for a total of 32,376 TESes. AliCPT-1 leverages the technological advancements in the detector design from multiple generations of previously successful feedhorn-coupled polarimeters, and in the instrument design from BICEP-3, but applied on a larger scale. The cryostat receiver is currently under integration and testing. During the first deployment year, the focal plane will be populated with up to 4 TES arrays. Further TES arrays will be deployed in the following years, fully populating the focal plane with 19 arrays on the fourth deployment year. The interplay between interlayer van der Waals interaction and intralayer lattice distortion can lead to structural reconstruction in slightly twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with the twist angle being smaller than a characteristic angle {\theta}c. Experimentally, the {\theta}c is demonstrated to be very close to the magic angle ({\theta} ~ 1.05{\deg}). In this work, we address the transition between reconstructed and unreconstructed structures of the TBG across the magic angle by using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Our experiment demonstrates that both the two structures are stable in the TBG around the magic angle. By applying a STM tip pulse, we show that the two structures can be switched to each other and the bandwidth of the flat bands, which plays a vital role in the emergent strongly correlated states in the magic-angle TBG, can be tuned. The observed tunable lattice reconstruction and bandwidth of the flat bands provide an extra control knob to manipulate the exotic electronic states of the TBG near the magic angle., Comment: 4 figures in main text

The Chern-Simons term, through which the cosmic Axion-like field couples to the electromagnetic field, has the effect to rotate CMB polarization directions and to break the CPT symmetry. This rotation will change the CMB power spectra, no matter isotropic or anisotropic the rotation angle is. In this paper we revisit this issue by further considering the correlations between the (anisotropic) rotation angle $\alpha$ and the CMB temperature and (unrotated) $E$ polarization fields. These correlations could be generated in the Axion-like models with nonzero potential under the adiabatic initial condition. We first investigate how these correlations contribute further modifications to the CMB power spectra, then calculate the CMB bispectra for the temperature and rotated polarization fields. These bispectra would vanish if the $T\alpha$ and $E\alpha$ correlations are absent. In the vicinity of the magic angle in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), the two low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) become exceedingly narrow1-10 and many exotic correlated states, such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and topological phases, are observed11-16. Heterostrain, which is almost unavoidable in the TBG, can modify its single-particle band structure and lead to novel properties of the TBG that have never been considered so far. Here, we show that heterostrain in a TBG near the magic angle generates a new zero-energy flat band between the two VHSs. Doping the TBG to partially fill the zero-energy flat band, we observe a correlation-induced gap of about 10 meV that splits the flat band. By applying perpendicular magnetic fields, a large and linear response of the gap to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to the emergence of large orbital magnetic moments in the TBG when valley degeneracy of the flat band is lifted by electron-electron interactions. The orbital magnetic moment per moire supercell is measured as about 15 uB in the TBG.

Inherent symmetries of a system lead to multiple degeneracies of its energy spectra. Introducing individual atomic impurities can locally break these symmetries, which is expected to lift the degenerate degrees of freedom around the impurities. Although central to our understanding of the fundamental properties of solids, the broken-symmetry states induced by individual atomic impurities have so far eluded observation. Here, we report nanoscale probing of the broken-symmetry states in graphene induced by two types of individual atomic impurities, i.e., isolated nitrogen dopants and isolated hydrogen atoms chemisorbed on graphene. Our experiments demonstrate that both types of atomic impurities can locally break sublattice symmetry of graphene and generate valley-polarized states, which extends several nanometers around the impurities. For the isolated hydrogen atom chemisorbed on graphene, the enhanced spin-orbit coupling, which arises from the sp3 distortion of graphene due to the hydrogen chemisorption, further lifts the spin degeneracy, resulting in a fully spin and valley polarized states within about 1 nm around the hydrogen atom. Our result paves the way to control various broken-symmetry states at the nanoscale by various atomic impurities.

A remarkable property of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with small twist angle is the presence of a well-defined and conserved low-energy valley degrees of freedom1, which can potentially bring about new types of valley-associated spontaneous-symmetry breaking phases. Electron-electron (e-e) interactions in the TBG near the magic angle 1.1 degree can lift the valley degeneracy, allowing for the realization of orbital magnetism and topological phases2-11. However, direct measurement of the orbital-based magnetism in the TBG is still lacking up to now. Here we report evidence for orbital magnetic moment generated by the moire-scale current loops in a TBG with a twist angle {\theta} ~ 1.68 degree. The valley degeneracy of the 1.68 degree TBG is removed by e-e interactions when its low-energy van Hove singularity (VHS) is nearly half filled. A large and linear response of the valley splitting to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to coupling to the large orbital magnetic moment induced by chiral current loops circulating in the moire pattern. According to our experiment, the orbital magnetic moment is about 10.7 uB per moire supercell. In the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG), strong electron-electron (e-e) correlations caused by the band-flattening lead to many exotic quantum phases such as superconductivity, correlated insulator, ferromagnetism, and quantum anomalous Hall effects, when its low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) are partially filled. Here our high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope and spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the e-e correlation in a non-magic-angle TBG with a twist angle {\theta} = 1.49 still plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. Our most interesting observation on that sample is that when one of its VHS is partially filled, the one associated peak in the spectrum splits into four peaks. Our analysis based on the continuum model suggests that such a one-to-four split of the VHS originates from the formation of an interaction-driven spin-valley-polarized metallic state near the VHS, lifting both the spin and valley degeneracies. Our results for this non-magic-angle TBG reveal a new symmetry-breaking phase, which has not been identified in the MA-TBG or in other systems.

Since its discovery, Berry phase has been demonstrated to play an important role in many quantum systems. In gapped Bernal bilayer graphene, the Berry phase can be continuously tuned from zero to 2pi, which offers a unique opportunity to explore the tunable Berry phase on the physical phenomena. Here, we report experimental observation of Berry phases-induced valley splitting and crossing in moveable bilayer graphene p-n junction resonators. In our experiment, the bilayer graphene resonators are generated by combining the electric field of scanning tunneling microscope tip with the gap of bilayer graphene. A perpendicular magnetic field changes the Berry phase of the confined bound states in the resonators from zero to 2pi continuously and leads to the Berry phase difference for the two inequivalent valleys in the bilayer graphene. As a consequence, we observe giant valley splitting and unusual valley crossing of the lowest bound states. Our results indicate that the bilayer graphene resonators can be used to manipulate the valley degree of freedom in valleytronics.

Cosmological CPT violation will rotate the polarized direction of CMB photons, convert partial CMB E mode into B mode and vice versa. It will generate non-zero EB, TB spectra and change the EE, BB, TE spectra. This phenomenon gives us a way to detect the CPT-violation signature from CMB observations, and also provides a new mechanism to produce B mode polarization. In this paper, we perform a global analysis on tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and polarization rotation angles based on current CMB datasets with both low $\ell$ (Planck, BICEP2/Keck Array) and high $\ell$ (POLARBEAR, SPTpol, ACTPol). Benefited from the high precision of CMB data, we obtain the isotropic rotation angle $\bar{\alpha} = -0.01^\circ \pm 0.37^\circ $ at 68% C.L., the variance of the anisotropic rotation angles $C^{\alpha}(0)<0.0032\,\mathrm{rad}^2$, the scale invariant power spectrum $D^{\alpha\alpha}_{\ell \in [2, 350]}<4.71\times 10^{-5} \,\mathrm{rad}^2$ and $r<0.057$ at 95% C.L.. Using low-temperature high-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically study a graphene quantum dot (GQD) defined by a circular graphene p-p junction. Inside the GQD, we observe a series of quasi-bound states arising from whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) confinement of the circular junction and directly visualize these quasi-bound states down to atomic dimensions. By applying a strong magnetic field, a large jump in energy of the quasi-bound states, which is about one-half the energy spacing between the quasi-bound states, is observed. Such a behavior results from turning on a {\pi} Berry phase of massless Dirac fermions in graphene by a magnetic field. Moreover, our experiment demonstrates that a quasi-bound state splits into two peaks with an energy separation of about 26 meV when the Fermi level crosses the quasi-bound state, indicating that there are strong electron-electron interactions in the GQD.

A number of quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states have been predicted in the relativistic zero Landau level (LL) of graphene monolayer. These states, especially the states at LL filling factor v = 0 of charge-neutral graphene, have been extensively explored in experiment. To date, identification of these high-field broken-symmetry states has mostly relied on macroscopic transport techniques. Here, we study splitting of the zero LL of graphene at partial filling and demonstrate a direct approach by imaging the QHIFM states at atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope. At half filling of the zero LL (v = 0), the system is in a spin unpolarized state and we observe a linear magnetic-field-scaling of valley splitting. Simultaneously, the spin degeneracy in the two valleys is also lifted by the magnetic fields. When the Fermi level lies inside the spin-polarized states (at v = 1 or -1), the spin splitting is dramatically enhanced because of the strong many-body effects. At v = 0, we direct image the wavefunctions of the QHIFM states at atomic scale and observe an interaction-driven density wave featuring a Kekule distortion, which is responsible for the large gap at charge neutrality point in high magnetic fields., Comment: 3 figures in main text

It is quite easy to control spin polarization and spin direction of a system via magnetic fields. However, there is no such a direct and efficient way to manipulate valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to realize valley polarization and valley inversion in graphene by using both strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields and real magnetic fields. The pseudomagnetic fields, which are quite different from real magnetic fields, pointing in opposite directions at the two distinct valleys of graphene. Therefore, coexistence of the pseudomagnetic fields and the real magnetic fields leads to imbalanced effective magnetic fields at two distinct valleys of graphene. This allows us to control the valley in graphene as convenient as the electron spin. In this work, we report consistent observation of valley polarization and inversion in strained graphene via pseudo-Landau levels, splitting of real Landau levels and valley splitting of confined states using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. ABC-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) are predicted to exhibit novel many-body phenomena due to the existence of almost dispersionless flat-band structures near the charge neutrality point (CNP). Here, using high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy, we present Landau Level (LL) spectroscopy measurements of high-quality ABC-stacked TLG. We observe an approximately linear magnetic-field-scaling of the valley splitting and orbital splitting in the ABC-stacked TLG. Our experiment indicates that the valley splitting decreases dramatically with increasing the LL index. When the lowest LL is partially filled, we find an obvious enhancement of the orbital splitting, attributing to strong many-body effects. Moreover, we observe linear energy scaling of the inverse lifetime of quasiparticles, providing an additional evidence for the strong electron-electron interactions in the ABC-stacked TLG. Twisted graphene bilayers (TGBs) have low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) that are strongly localized around AA-stacked regions of the moire pattern. Therefore, they exhibit novel many-body electronic states, such as Mott-like insulator and unconventional superconductivity. Unfortunately, these strongly correlated states were only observed in magic angle TGBs with the twist angle theta~1.1{\deg}, requiring a precisely tuned structure. Is it possible to realize exotic quantum phases in the TGBs not limited at the magic angle? Here we studied electronic properties of a TGB with theta~1.64{\deg} and demonstrated that a VHS splits into two spin-polarized states flanking the Fermi energy when the VHS is close to the Fermi level. Such a result indicates that localized magnetic moments emerge in the AA-stacked regions of the TGB. Since the low-energy VHSs are quite easy to be reached in slightly TGBs, our result therefore provides a facile direction to realize novel quantum phases in graphene system., Comment: 4 figures
