Relativistic spin-polarized electron beams are important for fundamental research and the industry, but their generation currently requires conventional accelerators or ultrastrong laser facilities, limiting their accessibility and broad applications. Here, we put forward a novel method for constructing a compact efficient "polarizer" that achieves direct ultrafast conversion of relativistic dense electron beams into polarized ones, based on the beam "self-polarization" mechanism via simple beam-target interactions. In this scheme, as the electron beam grazes through the polarizer (a double-layer solid target), it ionizes the target and excites an asymmetric plasma field due to the plasma backflows. This field then reacts on the beam itself, triggering spontaneous radiative polarization and reflection of the beam, and ultimately yielding a dense polarized electron beam. Moreover, the double-layer target setup induces a plasma bubble that focuses the polarized beam and reshapes its polarization distribution. Our method is robust with respect to the beam and target parameters, and opens a new avenue for relativistic beam polarization with compact accessible devices, which would facilitate their broad applications and the development of related experiments, such as in strong-field QED studies, and polarized electron-positron and electron-ion colliders.

Investigating vortex electron interactions with electromagnetic fields is essential for advancing particle acceleration techniques, scattering theory in background fields, and obtaining novel electron beams for material diagnostics. A systematic investigation into the dynamics of vortex electrons in external laser fields and the exploration of laser-induced vortex modes remains lacking. In this work, we study the propagation of vortex electrons in linearly polarized (LP) and circularly polarized (CP) laser pulses, both separately and in their combined form in two-mode laser pulses. The theoretical formalism is developed by utilizing Volkov-Bessel wave functions, and the four-current density is obtained as a crucial observable quantity. Numerical results illustrate the dynamics of vortex electrons in external lasers, showing that the beam center of the vortex electron follows the classical motion of a point charge electron, while maintaining the probability distribution structure for both vortex eigenstates and superposition modes. The combined effect of LP and CP laser pulses in the two-mode laser field allows for the versatile control of vortex electrons, which is absent with LP or CP lasers alone, at femtosecond and sub-nanometer scales. Our findings demonstrate the versatile control over vortex electrons via laser pulses, with our formalism providing a reference for vortex scattering in laser backgrounds and inspiring the laser-controlled achievement of novel vortex modes as targeted diagnostic probes for specialized materials., Comment: 4 figures

Giant resonances (GRs) provide crucial insights into nuclear physics and astrophysics. Exciting GRs using particles like electrons is effective, yet the angular momentum (AM) transfer of electrons, including both intrinsic spin and orbital degrees of freedom in inelastic scattering, has never been studied. Here, we investigate AM transfer in GRs excited by plane-wave and vortex electrons, developing a comprehensive AM-resolved inelastic electron scattering theory. We find that even plane-wave electrons can model-independently extract transition strengths of higher multipolarity by selecting specific AM states of scattered electrons. Additionally, relativistic vortex electrons with orbital angular momentum (OAM) $\pm1$ can be efficiently generated. Vortex electrons can also be used to extract GR transition strength as in the plane-wave case, regardless of the position of nucleus relative to the beam axis. Furthermore, relativistic vortex electrons with larger OAM can be generated for on-axis nuclei due to AM conservation. Our method offers new perspectives for nuclear structure research and paves the way for generating vortex particles.

Compact spin-polarized positron accelerators play a major role in promoting significant positron application research, which typically require high acceleration gradients and polarization degree, both of which, however, are still great challenging. Here, we put forward a novel spin-polarized positron acceleration method which employs an ultrarelativistic high-density electron beam passing through any hole of multi-layer microhole array films to excite strong electrostatic and transition radiation fields. Positrons in the polarized electron-positron pair plasma, filled in the front of the multi-layer films, can be captured, accelerated, and focused by the electrostatic and transition radiation fields, while maintaining high polarization of above 90% and high acceleration gradient of about TeV/m. Multi-layer design allows for capturing more positrons and achieving cascade acceleration. Our method offers a promising solution for accelerator miniaturization, positron injection, and polarization maintaining, and also can be used to accelerate other charged particles.

Relativistic spin-polarized (SP) lepton beams are important for investigating spin-dependent interaction processes. In particular, spatially structured spin-polarized (SSP) lepton beams may find new applications in material, atomic, nuclear, high-energy physics and new physics beyond the Standard Model. However, realizing ultrafast generation and spin-manipulation of relativistic SSP lepton beams pose significant challenges. Here, we put forward a novel method of ultrafast (picosecond-timescale) generation of a relativistic SSP lepton beam via employing a moderate terahertz (THz) wave in a dielectric-lined waveguide (DWL). We first find that lepton beams with customizable spin-polarization structures can be generated by utilizing different electromagnetic modes, and optimizing the lepton velocity and THz phase velocity can improve efficiency of spin-manipulation and visibility of the SP structure. These SSP beams play a profound role in studying magnetic effects in material physics, chiral-selective chemistry, generation of structured $\gamma$-rays, etc., and open a new avenue for research on relativistic SP particles.

Polarized attosecond $\gamma-$rays may offer excitation and hyperfine tracking of reactions relevant to nuclear physics, astrophysics, high-energy physics, etc. However, unfortunately, generation of a feasible and easy-to-deploy source is still a great challenge. Here, we put forward a novel method for producing ultra-collimated high-brilliance polarized attosecond $\gamma-$rays via the interaction of an unpolarized electron beam with a solid-density plasma. As a relativistic electron beam enters a solid-density plasma, it can be modulated into high-density clusters via the self-modulation instability of itself and further into attosecond slices due to its own hosing instability. This is accompanied by the generation of similar pulse-width $\gamma-$slices via nonlinear Compton scattering. The severe hosing instability breaks the symmetry of the excited electromagnetic fields, resulting in net linear polarization of $\gamma-$slices, which challenges the conventional perception that the interaction of an axially symmetric unpolarized electron beam with a uniform plasma cannot generate polarized radiation. In addition, we also obtain high-quality electron microbunches which may serve as an alternative source for prebunched free-electron lasers.

Ultrarelativistic vortex leptons with intrinsic orbital angular momenta (OAM) have important applications in high energy particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, etc. However, unfortunately, their generation still poses a great challenge. Here, we put forward a novel method for generating ultrarelativistic vortex positrons and electrons through nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (NBW) scattering of vortex $\gamma$ photons. For the first time, a complete angular momentum-resolved scattering theory has been formulated, introducing the angular momentum of laser photons and vortex particles into the conventional NBW scattering framework. We find that vortex positron (electron) can be produced when the outgoing electron (positron) is generated along the collision axis. By unveiling the angular momentum transfer mechanism, we clarify that OAM of the $\gamma$ photon and angular momenta of multiple laser photons are entirely transferred to the generated pairs, leading to the production of ultrarelativistic vortex positrons or electrons with large OAM. Furthermore, we find that the cone opening angle and superposition state of the vortex $\gamma$ photon, distinct characteristics aside from its intrinsic OAM, can be determined via the angular distribution of created pairs in NBW processes. We put forward a novel method to generate high-brilliance polarized $\gamma$-photon beams via vacuum dichroism (VD)-assisted vacuum birefringence (VB) effect. We split a linearly polarized (LP) laser pulse into two subpulses with the first one colliding with a dense unpolarized electron beam to generate LP $\gamma$ photons (via nonlinear Compton scattering), which then further collide with the second subpulse and are partially transformed into circularly polarized ones via the VB effect. We find that by manipulating the relative polarization of two subpulses, one can ``purify'' (i.e., enhance) the polarization of the $\gamma$-photon beam via the VD effect. Due to the VD assistance, the VB effect reaches optimal when the relative polarization is nearly $30^\circ$, not the widely used $45^\circ$ in the common VB detection methods. In addition, our method can be used to efficiently confirm the well-known VB effect itself, which has not been directly observed in experiments yet.

Twisted photons can be emitted by free electrons in circular or spiral motion, which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) and possess a helical phase structure. However, classical radiation reaction (RR) effects has not been investigated as an accelerated electron emits vortex radiation during the interaction with a electromagnetic field. This work focuses on investigating the effects of radiation reaction on the production of twisted photons in the Nonlinear Inverse Thomson Scattering (NITS) process. Using the precise electron trajectory obtained by Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation with a circularly polarized (CP) plane-wave field, we find that the radiation reaction effects can be significant for a sufficiently long pulse of a plane wave. They observe modifications in the frequency, phase structure, rotational asymmetry of OAM density, and energy distribution of the vortex field due to radiation reaction. This finding could provide an unique signature for the detection of radiation reaction.

Vortex $\gamma$ photons, which carry large intrinsic orbital angular momenta (OAM), have significant applications in nuclear, atomic, hadron, particle and astro-physics, but their production remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the generation of such photons from nonlinear Compton scattering of circularly polarized monochromatic lasers on vortex electrons. We develop a quantum radiation theory for ultrarelativistic vortex electrons in lasers by using the harmonics expansion and spin eigenfunctions, which allows us to explore the kinematical characteristics, angular momentum transfer mechanisms, and formation conditions of vortex $\gamma$ photons. The multiphoton absorption of electrons enables the vortex $\gamma$ photons, with fixed polarizations and energies, to exist in mixed states comprised of multiple harmonics. Each harmonic represents a vortex eigenmode and has transverse momentum broadening due to transverse momenta of the vortex electrons. The large topological charges associated with vortex electrons offer the possibility for $\gamma$ photons to carry adjustable OAM quantum numbers from tens to thousands of units, even at moderate laser intensities. $\gamma$ photons with large OAM and transverse coherence length can assist in influencing quantum selection rules and extracting phase of the scattering amplitude in scattering processes., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A novel intense beam-driven scheme for high yield of the tri-alpha reaction 11B(p,{\alpha})2{\alpha} was investigated. We used a foam target made of cellulose triacetate (TAC, C_9H_{16}O_8) doped with boron. It was then heated volumetrically by soft X-ray radiation from a laser heated hohlraum and turned into a homogenous, and long living plasma. We employed a picosecond laser pulse to generate a high-intensity energetic proton beam via the well-known Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) mechanism. We observed up to 10^{10}/sr {\alpha} particles per laser shot. This constitutes presently the highest yield value normalized to the laser energy on target. The measured fusion yield per proton exceeds the classical expectation of beam-target reactions by up to four orders of magnitude under high proton intensities. This enhancement is attributed to the strong electric fields and nonequilibrium thermonuclear fusion reactions as a result of the new method. Our approach shows opportunities to pursue ignition of aneutronic fusion.

Cascaded Compton scattering and Breit-Wheeler (BW) processes play fundamental roles in high-energy astrophysical sources and laser-driven quantum electrodynamics (QED) plasmas. A thorough comprehension of the polarization transfer in these cascaded processes is essential for elucidating the polarization mechanism of high-energy cosmic gamma rays and laser-driven QED plasmas. In this study, we employ analytical cross-sectional calculations and Monte Carlo (MC) numerical simulations to investigate the polarization transfer in the cascade of electron-seeded inverse Compton scattering (ICS) and BW process. Theoretical analysis indicates that the polarization of background photons can effectively transfer to final-state particles in the first-generation cascade due to helicity transfer. Through MC simulations involving polarized background photons and non-polarized seed electrons, we reveal the characteristic polarization curves as a function of particle energy produced by the cascaded processes of ICS and BW pair production. Our results demonstrate that the first-generation photons from ICS exhibit the non-decayed stair-shape polarization curves, in contrast to the linearly decayed ones of the first-generation electrons. Interestingly, this polarization curve trend can be reversed in the second-generation cascade, facilitated by the presence of polarized first-generation BW pairs with fluctuant polarization curves. The cascade culminates with the production of second-generation BW pairs, due to diminished energy of second-generation photons below the threshold of BW process. Our findings provide crucial insights into the cascaded processes of Compton scattering and BW process, significantly contributing to the understanding and further exploration of laser-driven QED plasma creation in laboratory settings and high-energy astrophysics research.

High-brilliance high-polarization $\gamma$ rays based on Compton scattering are of great significance in broad areas, such as nuclear, high-energy, astro-physics, etc. However, the transfer mechanism of spin angular momentum in the transition from linear, through weakly into strongly nonlinear processes is still unclear, which severely limits the simultaneous control of brilliance and polarization of high-energy $\gamma$ rays. In this work, we investigate the manipulation mechanism of high-quality polarized $\gamma$ rays in Compton scattering of the ultrarelativistic electron beam colliding with an intense laser pulse. We find that the contradiction lies in the simultaneous achievement of high-brilliance and high-polarization of $\gamma$ rays by increasing laser intensity, since the polarization is predominately contributed by the electron (laser photon) spin via multi-photon (single-photon) absorption channel. Moreover, we confirm that the signature of $\gamma$-ray polarization can be applied for observing the nonlinear effects (multi-photon absorption) of Compton scattering with moderate-intensity laser facilities.

Strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED) plays a crucial role in ultraintense laser matter interactions, and demands sophisticated techniques to understand the related physics with new degrees of freedom, including spin angular momentum. To investigate the impact of SF-QED processes, we have introduced spin/polarization-resolved nonlinear Compton scattering, nonlinear Breit-Wheeler and vacuum birefringence processes into our particle-in-cell (PIC) code. In this article, we will provide details of the implementation of these SF-QED modules and share known results that demonstrate exact agreement with existing single particle codes. By coupling normal PIC with spin/polarization-resolved SF-QED processes, we create a new theoretical platform to study strong field physics in currently running or planned petawatt or multi-petawatt laser facilities.

Traditional photonuclear reactions primarily excite giant dipole resonances, making the measurement of isovector giant resonances with higher multipolarties a great challenge. In this work, the manipulation of collective excitations of different multipole transitions in nuclei via vortex $\gamma$ photons has been investigated. We develop the calculation method for photonuclear cross sections induced by the vortex $\gamma$ photon beam using the fully self-consistent random-phase approximation plus particle-vibration coupling (RPA+PVC) model based on Skyrme density functional. We find that the electromagnetic transitions with multipolarity $J< m_\gamma$ are forbidden for vortex $\gamma$ photons due to the angular momentum conservation, with $m_\gamma$ being the projection of total angular momentum of $\gamma$ photon on its propagation direction. For instance, this allows for probing the isovector giant quadrupole resonance without interference from dipole transitions using vortex $\gamma$ photons with $m_\gamma=2$. The electromagnetic transitions with $J>m_\gamma$ are strongly suppressed compared with the plane-wave-$\gamma$-photon case, and even vanish at specific polar angles. Therefore, the giant resonances with specific multipolarity can be extracted via vortex $\gamma$ photons. Moreover, the vortex properties of $\gamma$ photons can be meticulously diagnosed by measuring the nuclear photon-absorption cross section. Our method opens new avenues for photonuclear excitations, generation of coherent $\gamma$ photon laser and precise detection of vortex particles, and consequently, has significant impact on nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and strong laser physics.

We put forward a novel method for producing ultrarelativistic high-density high-polarization positrons through a single-shot interaction of a strong laser with a tilted solid foil. In our method, the driving laser ionizes the target, and the emitted electrons are accelerated and subsequently generate abundant $\gamma$ photons via the nonlinear Compton scattering, dominated by the laser. These $\gamma$ photons then generate polarized positrons via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process, dominated by a strong self-generated quasi-static magnetic field $\mathbf{B}^{\rm S}$. We find that placing the foil at an appropriate angle can result in a directional orientation of $\mathbf{B}^{\rm S}$, thereby polarizing positrons. Manipulating the laser polarization direction can control the angle between the $\gamma$ photon polarization and $\mathbf{B}^{\rm S}$, significantly enhancing the positron polarization degree. Our spin-resolved quantum electrodynamics particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that employing a laser with a peak intensity of about $10^{23}$ W/cm$^2$ can obtain dense ($\gtrsim$ 10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$) polarized positrons with an average polarization degree of about 70\% and a yield of above 0.1 nC per shot. Moreover, our method is feasible using currently available or upcoming laser facilities and robust with respect to the laser and target parameters. Such high-density high-polarization positrons hold great significance in laboratory astrophysics, high-energy physics and new physics beyond the Standard Model.

The advent of laser-driven high-intensity $\gamma$-photon beams has opened up new opportunities for designing advanced photon-photon colliders. Such colliders have the potential to produce a large yield of linear Breit-Wheeler (LBW) pairs in a single shot, which offers a unique platform for studying the polarized LBW process. In our recent work [Phys. Rev. D 105, L071902(2022)], we investigated the polarization characteristics of LBW pair production in CP $\gamma$-photon collisions. To fully clarify the polarization effects involving both CP and LP $\gamma$-photons, here we further investigate the LBW process using the polarized cross section with explicit azimuthal-angle dependence due to the base rotation of photon polarization vectors. We accomplished this by defining a new spin basis for positrons and electrons, which enables us to decouple the transverse and longitudinal spin components of $e^\pm$. By means of analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the linear polarization of photon can induce the highly angle-dependent pair yield and polarization distributions. The comprehensive knowledge of the polarized LBW process will also open up avenues for investigating the higher-order photon-photon scattering, the laser-driven quantum electrodynamic plasmas and the high-energy astrophysics.

Rapid development of ultrafast ultraintense laser technologies continues to create opportunities for studying strong-field physics under extreme conditions. However, accurate determination of the spatial and temporal characteristics of a laser pulse is still a great challenge, especially when laser powers higher than hundreds of terawatts are involved. In this paper, by utilizing the radiative spin-flip effect, we find that the spin depolarization of an electron beam can be employed to diagnose characteristics of ultrafast ultraintense lasers with peak intensities around $10^{20}$-$10^{22}$~W/cm$^2$. With three shots, our machine-learning-assisted model can predict, simultaneously, the pulse duration, peak intensity, and focal radius of a focused Gaussian ultrafast ultraintense laser (in principle, the profile can be arbitrary) with relative errors of $0.1\%$-$10\%$. The underlying physics and an alternative diagnosis method (without the assistance of machine learning) are revealed by the asymptotic approximation of the final spin degree of polarization. Our proposed scheme exhibits robustness and detection accuracy with respect to fluctuations in the electron beam parameters. Accurate measurements of the ultrafast ultraintense laser parameters will lead to much higher precision in, for example, laser nuclear physics investigations and laboratory astrophysics studies. Robust machine learning techniques may also find applications in more general strong-field physics scenarios.

Laser wakefield acceleration is paving the way for the next generation of electron accelerators, for their own sake and as radiation sources. A controllable dual-wake injection scheme is put forward here to generate an ultrashort triplet electron bunch with high brightness and high polarization, employing a radially polarized laser as a driver. We find that the dual wakes can be driven by both transverse and longitudinal components of the laser field in the quasi-blowout regime, sustaining the laser-modulated wakefield which facilitates the sub-cycle and transversely-split injection of the triplet bunch. {Polarization of the triplet bunch can be highly preserved due to the laser-assisted collective spin precession and the non-canceled transverse spins. In our three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the triplet electron bunch, with duration about $500$ as, six-dimensional brightness exceeding $10^{14}$ A/m$^2$/0.1$\%$ and polarization over $80\%$, can be generated using a few-terawatt laser}. Such an electron bunch could play an essential role in many applications, such as ultrafast imaging, nuclear structure and high-energy physics studies, and the operation of coherent radiation sources., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Vortex $\gamma$ photons with intrinsic orbital angular momenta (OAM) possess a wealth of applications in various fields, e.g.-strong-laser physics, nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics-yet their generation remains unsettled. In this work, we investigate the generation of vortex $\gamma$ photons via nonlinear Compton scattering of ultrarelativistic electrons in a circularly polarized laser pulse. We develop a quantum electrodynamics scattering theory that explicitly addresses the multiphoton absorption and the angular momentum transfer mechanism. In pulsed laser fields, we unveil the vortex phase structure of the scattering matrix element, discuss how the vortex phase could be transferred to the radiated photon, and derive the radiation rate of the vortex $\gamma$ photon. We numerically examine the energy spectra and beam characteristics of the radiation, while also investigating the influence of finite laser pulses on the angular momentum and energy distribution of the emitted vortex $\gamma$ photons., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Vacuum birefringence (VB) is a basic phenomenon predicted in quantum electrodynamics (QED). However, due to the smallness of the signal, conventional magnet-based and extremely intense laser-driven detection methods are still very challenging. This is because in the first case the interaction length is large but the field is limited, and vice versa in the second case. We put forward a method to generate and detect VB in a plasma bubble wakefield, which combines both advantages, providing large fields along large interaction lengths. A polarized $\gamma$-photon beam is considered to probe the wakefield along a propagation distance of millimeters to centimeters in the plasma bubble. We find via plasma particle-in-cell simulations that the VB signal in terms of Stokes parameters can reach about $ 10^{-5}$ ($10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$) for tens of MeV (GeV) probe photons with moderately intense lasers ($10^{20}$-$10^{21}~\mathrm{W/cm^2}$). The main source of noise from plasma electrons is mitigated, in particular, by a choice of $\gamma$-photon polarization and by proper modulation of the plasma density. The proposed method represents an attractive alternative for the experimental observation of VB via laser-plasma interaction.

High-energy spin-polarized electron, positron, and $\gamma$-photon beams have many significant applications in the study of material properties, nuclear structure, particle physics, and high-energy astrophysics. Thus,efficient production of such polarized beams attracts a broad spectrum of research interests. This is driven mainly by the rapid advancements in ultrashort and ultraintense laser technology. Currently available laser pulses can achieve peak intensities in the range of $10^{22}-10^{23}$ Wcm$^{-2}$, with pulse durations of tens of femtoseconds. The dynamics of particles in laser fields of the available intensities is dominated by quantum electrodynamics (QED) and the interaction mechanisms have reached regimes spanned by nonlinear multiphoton absorbtion (strong-field QED processes). In strong-field QED processes, the scattering cross sections obviously depend on the spin and polarization of the particles, and the spin-dependent photon emission and the radiation-reaction effects can be utilized to produce the polarized particles. An ultraintense laser-driven polarized particle source possesses the advantages of high-brilliance and compactness, which could open the way for the unexplored aspects in a range of researches. In this work, we briefly review the seminal conclusions from the study of the polarization effects in strong-field QED processes, as well as the progress made by recent proposals for production of the polarized particles by laser-beam or laser-plasma interactions.

Generation of arbitrarily spin polarized muon pairs is investigated via polarized $e^-e^+$ collision. We calculate the fully spin-resolved cross section ${\rm d}\sigma_{e^-e^+\rightarrow \mu^-\mu^+}$ and utilize the Monte Carlo method of binary collision to describe the production and polarization processes of muon pairs. We find that, due to the dependence of mixed helicities on the scattering angle, arbitrarily polarized muon pairs with both of the longitudinal and transverse spin components can be produced. The collision of tightly collimated electron and positron beams with highly longitudinal polarization and nC charge can generate about $40\%$ muon pairs with longitudinal polarization and about $60\%$ muon pairs with transverse polarization. The compact high-flux $e^-e^+\rightarrow\mu^-\mu^+$ muon source could be implemented through the next-generation laser-plasma linear collider, and would be essential to facilitate the investigation of fundamental physics and the measurement technology in broad areas.

An all-optical method of ultrafast spin rotation is put forward to precisely manipulate the polarization of relativistic charged particle beams of leptons or ions. In particular, laser-driven dense ultrashort beams are manipulated via single-shot interaction with a co-propagating moderate temporally asymmetric (frequency-chirped or subcycle THz) laser pulse. Using semi-classical numerical simulations, we find that in a temporally asymmetrical laser field, the spin rotation of a particle can be determined from the flexibly controllable phase retardation between its spin precession and momentum oscillation. An initial polarization of a proton beam can be rotated to any desired orientation (e.g., from the common transverse to the more useful longitudinal polarization) with extraordinary precision (better than 1\%) in tens of femtoseconds using a feasible frequency-chirped laser pulse. Moreover, the beam qualities, in terms of energy and angular divergence, can be significantly improved in the rotation process. This method has potential applications in various areas involving ultrafast spin manipulation, like laser-plasma, laser-nuclear and high-energy particle physics.

Laser-driven brilliant controllable polarized $\gamma$-photon sources open the way for designing compact $\gamma\gamma$ collider, which enable the large yield of linear Breit-Wheeler (LBW) pairs in a single shot and thus provide an opportunity for the investigation of polarized LBW process. In this work we investigate the polarization characteristics of LBW pair production via our developed spin-resolved binary collision simulation method. Polarization of $\gamma$-photons modifies the kinematics of scattering particles and induces the correlated energy-angle shift of LBW pairs, and the latter's polarization characteristic depends on the helicity configures of scattering particles. Our method confirms that the polarized $\gamma\gamma$ collider with an asymmetric setup can be performed with currently achievable laser facilities to produce abundant polarized LBW pairs, fulfilling the detection power of polarimetries. The precise knowledge of polarized LBW process is in favor of the calibration and monitor of polarized $\gamma\gamma$ collider, and could enhance the opacity of $\gamma$-photons in high-energy astrophysical objects to exacerbate the inconsistency between some observations and standard models.

Circularly polarized (CP) $\gamma$-ray sources are versatile for broad applications in nuclear physics, high-energy physics and astrophysics. The laser-plasma based particle accelerators provide accessibility for much higher flux $\gamma$-ray sources than conventional approaches, in which, however, the circular polarization properties of emitted $\gamma$-photons are used to be neglected. In this letter, we show that brilliant CP $\gamma$-ray beams can be generated via the combination of laser plasma wakefield acceleration and plasma mirror techniques. In weakly nonlinear Compton scattering scheme with moderate laser intensities, the helicity of the driving laser can be transferred to the emitted $\gamma$-photons, and their average polarization degree can reach about $\sim 37\%$ ($21\%$) with a peak brilliance of $\gtrsim 10^{21}~$photons/(s $\cdot$ mm$^2 \cdot$ mrad$^2 \cdot$ 0.1% BW) around 1~MeV (100~MeV). Moreover, our proposed method is easily feasible and robust with respect to the laser and plasma parameters.

Deep understanding of photon polarization impact on pair production is essential for the efficient creation of laser driven polarized positron beams, and demands a complete description of polarization effects in strong-field QED processes. We investigate, employing fully polarization resolved Monte Carlo simulations, the correlated photon and electron (positron) polarization effects in multiphoton Breit-Wheeler pair production process during the interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating elliptically polarized laser pulse. We showed that the polarization of e^-e^+ pairs is degraded by 35\%, when the polarization of the intermediate photon is resolved, accompanied with an approximately 13\% decrease of the pair yield. Moreover, the polarization direction of energetic positrons in small angle region is reversed, which originates from the pair production of hard photons with polarization parallel with electric field.

Generation of arbitrarily spin-polarized lepton (here refer in particular to electron and positron) beams has been investigated in the single-shot interaction of high-energy polarized $\gamma$ photons with an ultraintense asymmetric laser pulse via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (BW) pair production. We develop a fully spin-resolved semi-classical Monte Carlo method to describe the pair creation and polarization in the local constant field approximation. In nonlinear BW process the polarization of created pairs is simultaneously determined by the polarization of parent $\gamma$ photons, the polarization and asymmetry of scattering laser field, due to the spin angular momentum transfer and the asymmetric spin-dependent pair production probabilities, respectively. In considered all-optical method, dense GeV lepton beams with average polarization degree up to about $80\%$ (adjustable between the transverse and longitudinal components) can be obtained with currently achievable laser facilities, which could be used as injectors of the polarized $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Dense high-energy monoenergetic proton beams are vital for wide applications, thus modern laser-plasma-based ion acceleration methods are aiming to obtain high-energy proton beams with energy spread as low as possible. In this work, we put forward a quantum radiative compression method to post-compress a highly accelerated proton beam and convert it to a dense quasi-monoenergetic one. We find that when the relativistic plasma produced by radiation pressure acceleration collides head-on with an ultraintense laser beam, large-amplitude plasma oscillations are excited due to quantum radiation-reaction and the ponderomotive force, which induce compression of the phase space of protons located in its acceleration phase with negative gradient. Our three-dimensional spin-resolved QED particle-in-cell simulations show that hollow-structure proton beams with a peak energy $\sim$ GeV, relative energy spread of few percents and number $N_p\sim10^{10}$ (or $N_p\sim 10^9$ with a $1\%$ energy spread) can be produced in near future laser facilities, which may fulfill the requirements of important applications, such as, for radiography of ultra-thick dense materials, or as injectors of hadron colliders.

Energetic spin-polarized positrons are extremely demanded for forefront researches, such as $e^- e^+$ collider physics, but making compact positron sources is still very challenging. Here we put forward an efficient scheme of trapping and acceleration of polarized positrons in plasma wakefields. Seed electrons colliding with a bichromatic laser create polarized $\gamma$ photons which then split into $e^- e^+$ pairs via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process with an average (partial) positron polarization above 30\% (70\%). Over 70\% positrons are trapped and accelerated in recovered wakefields driven by a hollow electron beam, obtaining an energy gain of 3.5 GeV/cm with slight depolarization. This scheme provides a potential for constructing compact and economical positron sources for future applications.

Stochasticity effects in the spin (de)polarization of an ultrarelativistic electron beam during photon emissions in a counterpropoagating ultrastrong focused laser pulse in the quantum radiation reaction regime are investigated. We employ a Monte Carlo method to describe the electron dynamics semiclassically, and photon emissions as well as the electron radiative polarization quantum mechanically. While in the latter the photon emission is inherently stochastic, we were able to identify its imprints in comparison with the new developed semiclassical stochasticity-free method of radiative polarization applicable in the quantum regime. With an initially spin-polarized electron beam, the stochastic spin effects are seen in the dependence of the depolarization degree on the electron scattering angle and the electron final energy (spin stochastic diffusion). With an initially unpolarized electron beam, the spin stochasticity is exhibited in enhancing the known effect of splitting of the electron beam along the propagation direction into two oppositely polarized parts by an elliptically polarized laser pulse. The considered stochasticity effects for the spin are observable with currently achievable laser and electron beam parameters.

Generation of highly-polarized high-energy brilliant $\gamma$-rays via laser-plasma interaction has been investigated in the quantum radiation-reaction regime. We employ a quantum-electrodynamics particle-in-cell code to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics semiclassically and photon emission and polarization quantum mechanically in the local constant field approximation. As an ultrastrong linearly-polarized (LP) laser pulse irradiates on a near-critical-density (NCD) plasma followed by an ultrathin planar aluminum target, the electrons in NCD plasma are first accelerated by the driving laser to ultrarelativistic energies, and then head-on collide with reflected laser pulse by the aluminum target, emitting brilliant LP $\gamma$-rays due to nonlinear Compton scattering with an average polarization of about 70\% and energy up to hundreds of MeV. By comparison, as a conical gold target filled with NCD plasma is employed, the linear polarization degree, collimation and brilliance of emitted $\gamma$-ray beam are all significantly improved due to the enhanced strong laser-driven quasi-static magnetic field in plasmas. Such $\gamma$-rays can be produced with currently achievable laser facilities and find various applications in high-energy physics and astrophysics.

The interaction of an unpolarized electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense linearly polarized laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. We employ a semiclassical Monte Carlo method to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics, photon emissions and polarization, and pair production. Abundant high-energy linearly polarized gamma photons are generated intermediately during this interaction via nonlinear Compton scattering, with an average polarization degree of more than 50%, which further interacting with the laser fields produce electron-positron pairs due to nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. The photon polarization is shown to significantly affect the pair yield by a factor beyond 10%. The considered signature of the photon polarization in the pair's yield can be experimentally identified in a prospective two-stage setup. Moreover, the signature can serve also for the polarimetry of high-energy high-flux gamma photons with a resolution well below 1% with currently achievable laser facilities.

Generation of circularly-polarized (CP) and linearly-polarized (LP) $\gamma$-rays via the single-shot interaction of an ultraintense laser pulse with a spin-polarized counterpropagating ultrarelativistic electron beam has been investigated in nonlinear Compton scattering in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. For the process simulation a Monte Carlo method is developed which employs the electron-spin-resolved probabilities for polarized photon emissions. We show efficient ways for the transfer of the electron polarization to the high-energy photon polarization. In particular, multi-GeV CP (LP) $\gamma$-rays with polarization of up to about 95\% can be generated by a longitudinally (transversely) spin-polarized electron beam, with a photon flux at a single shot meeting the requirements of recent proposals for the vacuum birefringence measurement in ultrastrong laser fields. Such high-energy, high-brilliance, high-polarization $\gamma$-rays are also beneficial for other applications in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and laboratory astrophysics.

Spin-polarization effects of an ultrarelativistic electron beam head-on colliding with an ultraintense two-color laser pulse are investigated comprehensively in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. We employ a Monte Carlo method, derived from the recent work of [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 122}, 154801 (2019)], to calculate the spin-resolved electron dynamics and photon emissions in the local constant field approximation. We find that electron radiation probabilities in adjacent half cycles of a two-color laser field are substantially asymmetric due to the asymmetric field strengths, and consequently, after interaction the electron beam can obtain a total polarization of about 11\% and a partial polarization of up to about 63\% because of radiative spin effects, with currently achievable laser facilities, which may be utilized in high-energy physics and nuclear physics. Moreover, the considered effects are shown to be crucially determined by the relative phase of the two-color laser field and robust with respect to other laser and electron beam parameters., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Impacts of spin-polarization of an ultrarelativistic electron beam head-on colliding with a strong laser pulse on emitted photon spectra and electron dynamics have been investigated in the quantum radiation regime. We simulate photon emissions quantum mechanically and electron dynamics semiclassically via taking spin-resolved radiation probabilities in the local constant field approximation. A small ellipticity of the laser field brings about an asymmetry in angle-resolved photon spectrum, which sensitively relies on the polarization of the electron beam. The asymmetry is particularly significant in high-energy photon spectra, and is employed for the polarization detection of a high-energy electron beam with extraordinary precision, e.g., better than 0.3\% for a few-GeV electron beam at a density of the scale of $10^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$ with currently available strong laser fields. This method demonstrates for the first time a way of single-shot determination of polarization for ultrarelativistic electron beams via nonlinear Compton scattering. A similar method based on the asymmetry in the electron momentum distribution after the interaction due to spin-dependent radiation reaction is proposed as well.

Relativistic spin-polarized positron beams are indispensable for future electron-positron colliders to test modern high-energy physics theory with high precision. However, present techniques require very large scale facilities for those experiments. We put forward a novel efficient way for generating ultrarelativistic polarized positron beams employing currently available laser fields. For this purpose the generation of polarized positrons via multiphoton Breit-Wheeler pair production and the associated spin dynamics in single-shot interaction of an ultraintense laser pulse with an ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. A specifically tailored small ellipticity of the laser field is shown to promote splitting of the polarized particles along the minor axis of laser polarization into two oppositely polarized beams. In spite of radiative de-polarization, a dense positron beam with up to about 90\% polarization can be generated in tens of femtoseconds. The method may eventually usher high-energy physics studies into smaller-scale laser laboratories.

The impact of stochasticity effects (SEs) in photon emissions on the proton energy spectra during laser-plasma interaction is theoretically investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime, which may facilitate SEs experimental observation. We calculate the photon emissions quantum mechanically and the plasma dynamics semiclassically via two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. An ultrarelativistic plasma generated and driven by an ultraintense laser pulse head-on collides with another strong laser pulse, which decelerates the electrons due to radiation-reaction effect and results in a significant compression of the proton energy spectra because of the charge separation force. In the considered regime the SEs are demonstrated in the shift of the mean energy of the protons up to hundreds of MeV. This effect is robust with respect to the laser and target parameters and measurable in soon available strong laser facilities.

Spin-polarization of an ultrarelativistic electron beam head-on colliding with an ultraintense laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-reaction regime. We develop a Monte-Carlo method to model electron radiative spin effects in arbitrary electromagnetic fields by employing spin-resolved radiation probabilities in the local constant field approximation. Due to spin-dependent radiation reaction, the applied elliptically polarized laser pulse polarizes the initially unpolarized electron beam and splits it along the propagation direction into two oppositely transversely polarized parts with a splitting angle of about tens of milliradians. Thus, a dense electron beam with above 70\% polarization can be generated in tens of femtoseconds. The proposed method demonstrates a way for relativistic electron beam polarization with currently achievable laser facilities.

Dynamics of an electron beam head-on colliding with an ultraintense focused ultrashort circularly-polarized laser pulse are investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. Generally, the ponderomotive force of the laser fields may deflect the electrons transversely, to form a ring structure on the cross-section of the electron beam. However, we find that when the Lorentz factor of the electron $\gamma$ is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the invariant laser field parameter $\xi$, the stochastic nature of the photon emission leads to electron aggregation abnormally inwards to the propagation axis of the laser pulse. Consequently, the electron angular distribution after the interaction exhibits a peak structure in the beam propagation direction, which is apparently distinguished from the "ring"-structure of the distribution in the classical regime, and therefore, can be recognized as a proof of the fundamental quantum stochastic nature of radiation. The stochasticity signature is robust with respect to the laser and electron parameters and observable with current experimental techniques.

The impacts of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a long relativistic tightly-focused laser pulse on the dynamics of a counter-propagating electron beam have been investigated in the, so-called, electron reflection regime, requiring the Lorentz factor of the electron $\gamma$ to be approximately two orders of magnitudes lower than the dimensionless laser field parameter $\xi$. The electrons are reflected at the rising edge of the laser pulse due to the ponderomotive force of the focused laser beam, and an asymmetric electron angular distribution emerges along the laser polarization direction, which sensitively depends on the CEP of the driving laser pulse for weak radiative stochastic effects. The CEP siganatures are observable at laser intensities of the order or larger than $10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$ and the pulse duration up to 10 cycles. The CEP detection resolution is proportional to the electron beam density and can achieve approximately $0.1^{\circ}$ at an electron density of about $10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$. The method is applicable for currently available ultraintense laser facilities with the laser peak power from tens of terawatt to multi-petawatt region.

Gamma-ray beams with large angular momentum are a very valuable tool to study astrophysical phenomena in a laboratory. We investigate generation of well-collimated $\gamma$-ray beams with a very large orbital angular momentum using nonlinear Compton scattering of a strong laser pulse of twisted photons at ultra-relativistic electrons. Angular momentum conservation among absorbed laser photons, quantum radiation and electrons are numerically demonstrated in the quantum radiation dominated regime. We point out that the angular momentum of the absorbed laser photons is not solely transferred to the emitted $\gamma$-photons, but due to radiation reaction shared between the $\gamma$-photons and interacting electrons. The efficiency of the angular momentum transfer is optimized with respect to the laser and electron beam parameters. The accompanying process of electron-positron pair production is furthermore shown to enhance the orbital angular momentum gained by the $\gamma$-ray beam.

Fully analytic expressions, for the electric and magnetic fields of an ultrashort and tightly focused laser pulse of the radially polarized category, are presented to lowest order of approximation. The fields are derived from scalar and vector potentials, along the lines of our earlier work for a similar pulse of the linearly polarized variety. A systematic program is also described from which the fields may be obtained to any desired accuracy, analytically or numerically.

The impact of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of an intense multi-cycle laser pulse on the radiation of an electron beam during nonlinear Compton scattering is investigated. An interaction regime of the electron beam counterpropagating to the laser pulse is employed, when pronounced high-energy x-ray double peaks emerge at different angles near the backward direction relative to the initial electron motion. This is achieved in the relativistic interaction domain, with the additional requirements that the electron energy is much lower than that necessary for the electron reflection condition at the laser peak, and the stochasticity effects in the photon emission are weak. The asymmetry parameter of the double peaks in the angular radiation distribution is shown to serve as a sensitive and uniform measure for the CEP of the laser pulse. The method demonstrates unprecedented sensitivity to subtle CEP-effects up to 10-cycle laser pulses and can be applied for the characterization of extremely strong laser pulses in present and near future laser facilities.

Signatures of stochastic effects in the radiation of a relativistic electron beam interacting with a counterpropagating superstrong short focused laser pulse are investigated in a quantum regime when the electron's radiation dominates its dynamics. We consider the electron-laser interaction at near-reflection conditions when pronounced high-energy gamma-ray bursts arise in the backward-emission direction with respect to the initial motion of the electrons. The quantum stochastic nature of the gamma-photon emission is exhibited in the angular distributions of the radiation and explained in an intuitive picture. Although, the visibility of the stochasticity signatures depends on the laser and electron beam parameters, the signatures are of a qualitative nature and robust. The stochasticity, a fundamental quantum property of photon emission, should thus be measurable rather straightforwardly with laser technology available in near future.
