Abstract Background Surfactant is a well-established therapy for preterm neonates affected by respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The goals of different methods of surfactant administration are to reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and the severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); however, the optimal administration method remains unknown. This study compares the effectiveness of the INtubate-RECruit-SURfactant-Extubate (IN-REC-SUR-E) technique with the less-invasive surfactant administration (LISA) technique, in increasing BPD-free survival of preterm infants. This is an international unblinded multicenter randomized controlled study in which preterm infants will be randomized into two groups to receive IN-REC-SUR-E or LISA surfactant administration. Methods In this study, 382 infants born at 24+0–27+6 weeks’ gestation, not intubated in the delivery room and failing nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) during the first 24 h of life, will be randomized 1:1 to receive IN-REC-SUR-E or LISA surfactant administration. The primary outcome is a composite outcome of death or BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age. The secondary outcomes are BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age; death; pulse oximetry/fraction of inspired oxygen; severe intraventricular hemorrhage; pneumothorax; duration of respiratory support and oxygen therapy; pulmonary hemorrhage; patent ductus arteriosus undergoing treatment; percentage of infants receiving more doses of surfactant; periventricular leukomalacia, severe retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis; total in-hospital stay; systemic postnatal steroids; neurodevelopmental outcomes; and respiratory function testing at 24 months of age. Randomization will be centrally provided using both stratification and permuted blocks with random block sizes and block order. Stratification factors will include center and gestational age (24+0 to 25+6 weeks or 26+0 to 27+6 weeks). Analyses will be conducted in both intention-to-treat and per-protocol populations, utilizing a log-binomial regression model that corrects for stratification factors to estimate the adjusted relative risk (RR). Discussion This trial is designed to provide robust data on the best method of surfactant administration in spontaneously breathing preterm infants born at 24+0–27+6 weeks’ gestation affected by RDS and failing nCPAP or NIPPV during the first 24 h of life, comparing IN-REC-SUR-E to LISA technique, in increasing BPD-free survival at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age of life. Introdução: O uso prolongado de antimicrobianos em infecção osteoarticular (IOA) é uma prática comum e o tempo do tratamento depende do tipo da infecção. A redução do tempo de tratamento tem sido uma prática comum e a racionalização dos antimicrobianos é uma medida necessária. Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto da redução do tempo do tratamento das IOA num hospital com protocolo de supressão prolongada de antimicrobianos. Comparar agentes etiológicos na ocorrência de recidiva de IOA. Método: Estudo retrospectivo observacional de 2018 a 2019 em Hospital de ensino. Todos os pacientes com infecção sem implante foram tratados por 6 semanas e com implante por 12 semanas. Após completar o tratamento todos foram acompanhados por 1 ano para avaliar recidiva. Os agentes etiológicos foram comparados com aqueles que tiveram recidiva. Foi considerado como recidiva todo paciente que após completar o tratamento apresentou sinais e sintomas sugestivos de IOA após 30 dias do término do tratamento. Resultados: De 106 pacientes: 5 evoluíram a óbito e foram excluídos do estudo, mas nenhum com mortalidade relacionada a infecção óssea. A idade mínima foi de 21 e a máxima de 89 anos, com média de 64, sendo 54 (53,47%) mulheres; 47 (46,53%) homens. Em relação à classificação, 47,0% Infecção Relacionada a Fratura; 29,0% Infecção de Artroplastia; 14,0%, Osteomielite crônica; 5,0% Infecção de material de síntese; 3,0% osteomielite por contiguidade e 2,0% Espondilodiscite. Os principais agentes foram: S. aureus (29,1%), seguido de P. aeruginosa (13,6%), E. cloacae (8,7%), K. pneumoniae (6,8%), S. marcescens (6,8%), E. faecalis (5,8%) e Acinetobacter spp (4,9%). O tempo mínimo de tratamento foi de 28 dias e o máximo de 84, com média de 58. Na redução de uma média prévia de 1 ano para uma média de 58 dias houve uma economia de 307 dias de uso de antimicrobiano. A economia de 307 dias corresponderia a aproximadamente o tratamento de mais 5 pacientes. Dos 101 pacientes, apenas 11,11% apresentaram recidiva. Todos apresentaram cultura positiva no primeiro episódio. Na recidiva, apenas 6 pacientes apresentaram cultura positiva. Dos 6 pacientes, 5 com agentes etiológicos diferente do primeiro episódio e 1 foi a mesma espécie, contudo com perfil de sensibilidade diferente. Conclusão: A redução do tempo do uso do antimicrobiano nas IOA teve um baixo percentual de recidiva (11,11%), sendo que a maior parte apresentou outro agente etiológico ou perfil de sensibilidade diferente.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of dietary butyric acid (BA) on the Japanese quail' performance, immunology, lipid profile, cecal microbiota, and antioxidant levels. 250 unsexed, one-week-old quail chicks were divided into 5 groups, each with fifty chicks (5 replicates of 10 chicks). The first group was given the basal diet (BD), while the 2nd to 5th groups were fed BD with 50, 100, 150, and 200 mg BA/kg, respectively. The results indicated that BA improved weight gain and FCR (p < 0.05) and decreased total FI. The 200 mg BA/kg of diet showed the lowest FI (p < 0.05) and the best FCR (p > 0.05). BA boosted immunity through increasing IgA, IgM, IgG, and Complement 3. Significantly lower alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were observed at 150 and 200 mg BA/kg (P < 0.05) than the control group. The BA-supplemented quail showed lower total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) than the control one. This effect was more pronounced for 100 and 200 mg of BA/kg. However, high low-density lipoprotein (HDL) did not differ from the control group (p > 0.05). BA at ≥100 mg/kg diet reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and induced greater levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), globulin, total protein, digestive enzymes than the control group (P < 0.05). BA decreased cecal E. coli, Salmonella, Enterococcus, and Coliforms and increased Lactic acid bacteria (p < 0.05) compared to non-supplemented group. Collectively, the inclusion of 100 mg BA/kg diet is ideal for Japanese quail production and health.

ABSTRACT: The goals of the current research are to ascertain the impacts of Dunaliella salina (DS) on quail growth, carcass criteria, liver and kidney functions, lipid profile, and immune response. Two hundred and forty 7-day-old quail chicks were divided equally into 4 separate groups with 6 replicates with 10 birds each. The groups were as follows: 1) control diet (the basal feed without DS), 2) control diet enriched with 0.25 g DS/kg, 3) control diet enriched with 0.50 g DS/kg, and 4) control diet enriched with 1.00 g DS/kg. Results elucidated that the birds which consumed 0.5 and 1 g DS/kg diet performed better than other birds in terms of live body weight (LBW), body weight gain (BWG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR). There were no significant changes in feed intake (FI) and carcass characteristics due to different dietary DS levels. Compared to the control group, DS-treated groups had better lipid profile (low total cholesterol and LDL values and high HDL values) and immune response (complement 3 values). The quails consumed feeds with different levels of DS had greater (P < 0.038) C3 compared to control. Adding 0.5 and 1 g DS/kg lowered blood concentrations of triglycerides and total protein (TP) values. The high level of DS (1 g/kg) had higher albumin values and lower AST values than other groups (P < 0.05). The creatinine values were at the lowest levels in the group consumed 0.50 g DS/kg feed. No changes (P > 0.05) were demonstrated among experimental groups in the ALT, urea, and lysozyme values. In conclusion, adding D. salina to growing quail diets enhanced growth, immune system, blood lipid profile, and kidney and liver function.

The search for alternative protein sources to soybean meal (SBM) in animal feeding is a strategic objective to reduce production costs and contribute to sustainable animal production. Spirulina, due to the high protein content, has emerged as a potential cost-effective, sustainable, viable, and high-nutritional-value food resource for many animal species. Insect larvae (Tenebrio molitor and Hermetia illucens) are also considered potential alternatives to SBM, given their high edible percentage of almost 100%, as well as a protein value higher than that of vegetable proteins. Rapeseed meal and grain legumes, such as fava beans, peas, lupins, and chickpea, can also be used as locally producible protein ingredients. This study reviews the nutritional value of these potential alternatives to SBM in pig diets, and their effects on animal performance, digestion, immune system, and the physicochemical and sensorial characteristics of meat, including processed pork products. The limits on their use in pig feeding are also reviewed to indicate gaps to be filled in future research on the supplementation level of these potential alternative protein sources in pig diets.

Pork production involves several sustainability issues. The recent increase in the natural wild boar population and the possibilities of its breeding to produce meat and for sport hunting have revived attention on this wild species. The most important factors that could account for its expansion and niche invasion are briefly summarized with the scientific opinion on management strategies. The information available to date on the quantitative, nutritional, and sensory characteristics of wild boar meat is reviewed to highlight its potential, if properly managed, as a sustainable option in meat production. This review reports on the opportunity of using wild boar meat in processed products and the need for research on processing qualities and acceptability for different final products. Above all, this review suggests that wild boar can be considered a sustainable alternative to meet the animal protein demand, as it can be established in marginal areas where it is already adapted to the environment, representing an interesting addition to traditional zootechnics.

In the future, assistive robots will spread to everyday settings and regularly interact with humans. This paper introduces a deployment approach for assistive robotic applications where human-robot interaction is the main element. The deployment infrastructure hinges on a model-to-code transformation technique and a ROS-based middleware layer and enables deployment in real life or simulation in a virtual environment. The approach fits into a model-driven framework for the formal verification of interactive scenarios. At design-time, the application analyst estimates the most likely outcome of the robotic mission through Statistical Model Checking of a Stochastic Hybrid Automata network modeling the scenario. We introduce an innovative approach to convert a specific subset of Stochastic Hybrid Automata into executable code to control the robot and respond to human actions. Deploying or simulating the application allows analysts to validate the results obtained at design time or to refine the formal model based on runs in the real or the virtual scene. The methodology’s effectiveness is tested via simulation of use cases from the healthcare setting, which can significantly benefit from this kind of approach thanks to its innovative features related to human physiology and autonomous behavior.
