1. Adsorption Behavior of Sr2+ on Yangjiang Granite

Abstract

Studying the adsorption behavior of Yangjiang granite to Sr2+ is very meaningful for the safety assessment of the low- and medium-level nuclear waste repository in Yangjiang. In this study, experimental samples were obtained from the granite rock formations near the low- and medium-level nuclear waste repository in Yangjiang. The static adsorption experiment was performed study the adsorption behavior of Yangjiang surrounding rocks granite on Sr2+. And the effect of contact time, initial concentration, reaction temperature, pH, as well as cation and anion on the adsorption behavior of granite was studied in detail. The physical and chemical compositions of Yangjiang granite were investigated by X-ray diffraction spectra(XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometer(XRF), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectra(FTIR) and Zeta potential analyzer. The characterization studies show the granite surface becomes rough after adsorption. The results of static adsorption experiments indicate that adsorption equilibrium time is about 5 days. The Sr2+ adsorption decreases with the increase of Sr2+ concentration which conforms to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model and belongs to single-layer adsorption. Under neutral and higher temperature conditions, the adsorption effect is better. The fitting thermodynamic equation suggests that adsorption is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The ion in groundwater such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe3+, NO3- all can inhibit the adsorption of Sr2+ by Yangjiang granite, while CO32- can interfere with adsorption by forming polymers with Sr2+. The results of this study can provide a certain reference for the safety evaluation of the low- and medium-level nuclear waste repository in Yangjiang.

Abstract

Deep learning-based Autonomous Driving (AD) models often exhibit poor generalization due to data heterogeneity in an ever domain-shifting environment. While Federated Learning (FL) could improve the generalization of an AD model (known as FedAD system), conventional models often struggle with under-fitting as the amount of accumulated training data progressively increases. To address this issue, instead of conventional small models, employing Large Vision Models (LVMs) in FedAD is a viable option for better learning of representations from a vast volume of data. However, implementing LVMs in FedAD introduces three challenges: (I) the extremely high communication overheads associated with transmitting LVMs between participating vehicles and a central server; (II) lack of computing resource to deploy LVMs on each vehicle; (III) the performance drop due to LVM focusing on shared features but overlooking local vehicle characteristics. To overcome these challenges, we propose pFedLVM, a LVM-Driven, Latent Feature-Based Personalized Federated Learning framework. In this approach, the LVM is deployed only on central server, which effectively alleviates the computational burden on individual vehicles. Furthermore, the exchange between central server and vehicles are the learned features rather than the LVM parameters, which significantly reduces communication overhead. In addition, we utilize both shared features from all participating vehicles and individual characteristics from each vehicle to establish a personalized learning mechanism. This enables each vehicle's model to learn features from others while preserving its personalized characteristics, thereby outperforming globally shared models trained in general FL. 18. Prognostic model for the exemption of adjuvant chemotherapy in stage IIIC endometrial cancer patients

Abstract

BackgroundThis study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the survival for stage IIIC endometrial cancer (EC) patients with adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) alone and personalize recommendations for the following adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT).MethodsIn total, 746 stage IIIC EC patients with ART alone were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry. Cox regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors. A nomogram was developed accordingly, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and C-index were implemented to assess the predictive power. The patients were divided into different risk strata based on the total points derived from the nomogram, and survival probability was compared between each risk stratus and another SEER-based cohort of stage IIIC EC patients receiving ART+ACT (cohort ART+ACT).ResultsFive independent predictors were included in the model, which had favorable discriminative power both in the training (C-index: 0.732; 95% CI: 0.704–0.760) and validation cohorts (C-index: 0.731; 95% CI: 0.709–0.753). The patients were divided into three risk strata (low risk 205), where low-risk patients had survival advantages over patients from cohort ART+ACT (HR: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.33–0.61, P < 0.001). However, the middle- and high-risk patients were inferior to patients from cohort ART+ACT in survival (P < 0.001).ConclusionA nomogram was developed to exclusively predict the survival for stage IIIC EC patients with ART alone, based on which the low-risk patients might be perfect candidates to omit the following ACT. However, the middle- and high-risk patients would benefit from the following ACT.

19. Variable Zero-Vector-Width-Based Three-Phase DC/AC Talkative Power Conversion

Abstract

Talkative power conversion (TPC), which embeds information into the switching ripples of power converters to achieve the simultaneous transmission of power and data without the installation of additional hardware, can reduce the additional communication infrastructure in cyber–physical systems of digital energy and modern power plants. TPC in dc/dc converters has been the subject of numerous investigations, but comparatively few studies have focused on dc/ac converters. In this article, a novel variable zero-vector-width modulation (VZVWM) for three-phase dc/ac converters is proposed to achieve TPC. The dc/ac converters can transmit information to the receiver, crossing the LCL filter and power cable, with a good power quality. The harmonic distribution is mathematically analyzed, underpinning the viability of VZVWM-based TPC, and leading to the proposed sliding FFT-based demodulation. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance of the VZVWM-based talkative dc/ac converter is studied in detail. The correctness of harmonics distribution and feasibility of the VZVWM-based TPC is validated in simulations and experiments. Total harmonic distortion (THD) and bit error rate (BER) are evaluated with regard to variable cable distances, types, and zero vector’s widths.

20. The Long-Term Efficacy Study of Multiple Allogeneic Canine Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transplantations Combined With Surgery in Four Dogs With Lumbosacral Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract

Severe lumbosacral pain, paraparesis or paraplegia, and urinary incontinence are common but frustrating problems in dogs with lumbosacral spinal cord injury (SCI). The surgical interventions including stabilization and decompression may not restore satisfying neurological functions in severe SCI. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Ad-MSCs) show benefits in immunomodulation, anti-inflammation, and promotion of axonal growth and remyelination, and also display efficacy in several diseases in veterinary medicine. In this report, four dogs presented with fracture of sacrum vertebrae or fracture of seventh lumbar and lumbosacral displacement after road traffic accidents. The clinical signs include lumbosacral pain (4/4), paraparesis (3/4), paraplegia (1/4), and urinary incontinence (4/4). All dogs were treated by surgical decompression with or without stabilization 1 to 7 weeks after trauma. Allogeneic canine Ad-MSCs (cAd-MSCs) were injected locally on nerve roots through the surgical region in all dogs. One dose of intravenous transplantation and 4 doses of local transplantation were also performed within 8 weeks after the surgery separately. All dogs showed significant neurological improvements with normal ambulatory ability (4/4) and urinary control (3/4) 3 months after the surgery and the first cAd-MSCs transplantation. No side effect was related to multiple cAd-MSCs transplantations during 6 months monitoring in all dogs. In conclusion, multiple cAd-MSCs transplantations could be a recommended treatment combined with surgery in dogs with lumbosacral SCI.

33. CANDIDA PANOPHTHALMITIS WITH IATROGENIC HYPERADRENOCORTICISM IN TWO DOGS

Abstract

Two adult poodles were referred for severe corneal ulcers in both eyes (oculi uterque [OU]) for 1.5 months, and swollen eyelids for approximately 1 week. Ophthalmic examination revealed diffuse corneal edema with grayish deposit and ulcer, uveitis, glaucoma, grayish deposit and necrosis on the third eyelid and conjunctiva, eyelids necrosis, eyelid-eyeball adhesions, and blindness. Cytological examination of the conjunctiva and cornea revealed neutrophilic inflammation, and a bacterial culture revealed Staphylococcus aureus. An adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test was performed, strongly indicating iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism. No improvement was observed after 2 weeks of antibiotic treatment. Fungal cultures from the cornea and conjunctiva were positive for Candida spp. Specific antifungal treatment included topical 5% natamycin eye drops (OU six times daily) and oral itraconazole (5[Formula: see text]mg/kg q12[Formula: see text]h). The grayish deposits of the conjunctiva and cornea were sloughed off, thus facilitating the healing of corneal and eyelids ulcers, over the next 3–4 weeks. Phthisis bulbi and eyelid-eyeball adhesions developed in both dogs after 6 months of follow-up. Based on the fungal isolation by culture, clinical signs, and response to antifungal treatment, Candida spp. panophthalmitis was diagnosed. Fungi should be considered a potential organism in panophthalmitis, especially with a medical history of steroids and antibiotic use. This case report demonstrates the grayish deposits of the cornea, conjunctiva, and third eyelid as possible characteristics of Candida infection in the dogs. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Candida panophthalmitis with iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism in dogs.

44. A population-based risk scoring system to individualize adjuvant treatment for stage IIIC endometrial cancer patients after surgery

Abstract

To develop a risk scoring system to tailor the adjuvant treatment for stage IIIC EC patients after surgery.Data source was from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry, where 3251 post-operative stage IIIC EC patients with different adjuvant treatment were included. Cox regression analysis was used to identify risk factors. The exp (β) of each independent risk factors generating from the cox analysis was used to construct the risk scoring system, which was further utilized to divide the patients into different risk subgroups and the efficacy of different adjuvant modalities in each risk subgroups would be compared accordingly.Six independent risk factors were identified to develop the scoring system, which further divided the patients into three risk subgroups based on the total risk score (Low-risk≤8.46, 8.47 ≤ Middle-risk≤9.94, High-risk≥9.95). This study revealed that CRT was not superior to RT alone (HR:1.208, 95%CI: 0.852-1.741; P = 0.289) or CT alone (HR:1.260, 95%CI: 0.750-2.116; P = 0.382) in Low-risk subgroup. We also observed that CRT had a survival advantage over other treatment modalities in the Middle-risk subgroup (All P 0.001), but CRT and CT alone to be superimposable in the High-risk subgroup (HR: 1.395, 95%CI: 0.878-2.216; P = 0.159).A risk scoring system has been developed to tailor the adjuvant treatment for stage IIIC EC patients after surgery, where RT or CT alone could be a substitute for CRT in Low-risk patients and CT alone was a potential alternative for High-risk patients while CRT remained to be the optimal choice for the Middle-risk patients.

48. A CASE OF BILATERAL RENAL B-CELL LYMPHOMA WITH UVEITIS AND SECONDARY POLYCYTHEMIA IN A JACK RUSSELL TERRIER

Abstract

An 8-year-old, castrated male, Jack Russell Terrier was presented with clinical signs of uveitis and glaucoma in the right eye (oculus dexter (OD)) for 2–3 months. Ophthalmic examination revealed OD episcleral congestion, corneal vascularization, aqueous flare, iris bombe, and vision loss. OD glaucoma and uveitis were under control by medical treatment. After 8 months, the dog had acute uveitis in the left eye (oculus sinister (OS)). General physical examination, blood examinations, radiography, and urinalysis were unremarkable. No improvement was observed after for 1 month of uveitis treatment, and more examinations were strongly suggested. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed several hypoechoic masses or cysts on both kidneys. Computed tomography (CT) showed diffuse nonenhancing hypodense patches in both kidneys. Renal tumor was highly suspected, but biopsy was declined by the owner. Ten days after CT examination, the dog suddenly developed anorexia, weakness, uremia, hyperkalemia, and polycythemia. The dog was euthanatized because of the worsening clinical condition, poor prognosis, and financial constraints, and both kidneys were biopsied for histopathology. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for B-cell marker (CD20) and negative for T-cell marker (CD3). Bilateral renal B-cell origin lymphoma was diagnosed by histologic and immunophenotyping examinations. In conclusion, bilateral renal lymphoma may be diagnosed with no systemic signs except bilateral uveitis. Renal function impairment was acutely developed with severe clinical signs at the end stage of the disease. Early, aggressive, complete examinations, and treatments are strongly recommended.
