Abstract Background Low levels of the essential amino acid lysine in maize endosperm is considered to be a major problem regarding the nutritional quality of food and feed. Increasing the lysine content of maize is important to improve the quality of food and feed nutrition. Although the genetic basis of quality protein maize (QPM) has been studied, the further exploration of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying lysine content variation still needs more attention. Results Eight maize inbred lines with increased lysine content were used to construct four double haploid (DH) populations for identification of QTLs related to lysine content. The lysine content in the four DH populations exhibited continuous and normal distribution. A total of 12 QTLs were identified in a range of 4.42–12.66% in term of individual phenotypic variation explained (PVE) which suggested the quantitative control of lysine content in maize. Five main genes involved in maize lysine biosynthesis pathways in the QTL regions were identified in this study. Conclusions The information presented will allow the exploration of candidate genes regulating lysine biosynthesis pathways and be useful for marker-assisted selection and gene pyramiding in high-lysine maize breeding programs.

Due to the heterogeneity of nodes and edges, heterogeneous network embedding is a very challenging task to embed highly coupled networks into a set of low-dimensional vectors. Existing models either only learn embedding vectors for nodes or only for edges. These two methods of embedding learning are rarely performed in the same model, and they both overlook the internal correlation between nodes and edges. To solve these problems, a node and edge joint embedding model is proposed for Heterogeneous Information Networks (HINs), called NEJE. The NEJE model can better capture the latent structural and semantic information from an HIN through two joint learning strategies: type-level joint learning and element-level joint learning. Firstly, node-type-aware structure learning and edge-type-aware semantic learning are sequentially performed on the original network and its line graph to get the initial embedding of nodes and the embedding of edges. Then, to optimize performance, type-level joint learning is performed through the alternating training of node embedding on the original network and edge embedding on the line graph. Finally, a new homogeneous network is constructed from the original heterogeneous network, and the graph attention model is further used on the new network to perform element-level joint learning. Experiments on three tasks and five public datasets show that our NEJE model performance improves by about 2.83% over other models, and even improves by 6.42% on average for the node clustering task on Digital Bibliography & Library Project (DBLP) dataset.

Background: Soil salinization is one of the key factors restricting the production of cropland. Once rice is subjected to alkali stress at the bud burst stage, the yield will suffer irreparable serious loss. Compared with salt tolerance, studies on QTL mapping and candidate gene analysis of rice alkali tolerance are limited. Results: In this study, we used the F2:3 population derived from the alkali-tolerant cultivar LD21 and the alkali-sensitive cultivar WL138 to construct an alkali-tolerant DNA mixing pool, and the BSA (Bulked Segregation Analysis) method was used for re-sequencing. The main QTL qRSLB9 controlling the relative shoot length of rice under alkali stress was mapped by QTL-seq. The candidate interval was narrowed to 346.5 kb by regional linkage mapping, which containing 6 DEGs screened through transcriptome sequencing. The qRT-PCR and candidate gene sequencing showed that LOC_Os09g24260 was most likely to control relative shoot length (RSL) in rice as a major gene who encodes the WD domain, G-beta repeat domain-containing protein. Conclusions: Based on these results, LOC_Os09g24260 was the candidate gene of qRSLB9 conferring alkalinity tolerance to rice at the bud burst stage. When the ground communication base stations in the target area are severely destroyed, the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) ad hoc networks can provide people with temporary communication services. Therefore, it is necessary to design a multi-UAVs cooperative control strategy to achieve better communication coverage and lower energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a multi-UAVs coverage model based on Adaptive Virtual Force-directed Particle Swarm Optimization (AVF-PSO) strategy. In particular, we first introduce the gravity model into the traditional Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm so as to increase the probability of full coverage. Then, the energy consumption is included in the calculation of the fitness function so that maximum coverage and energy consumption can be balanced. Finally, in order to reduce the communication interference between UAVs, we design an adaptive lift control strategy based on the repulsion model to reduce the repeated coverage of multi-UAVs. Experimental results show that the proposed coverage strategy based on gravity model outperforms the existing state-of-the-art approaches. For example, in the target area of any size, the coverage rate and the repeated coverage rate of the proposed multi-UAVs scheduling are improved by 6.9–29.1%, and 2.0–56.1%, respectively. Moreover, the proposed scheduling algorithm is high adaptable to diverse execution environments.© 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract Xanthoma typically occurs in the subcutaneous tissues, with rare cases of xanthoma in the joints. However, the case of knee joint osteonecrosis combined with xanthoma is even more uncommon. In this article, we described a 50-year-old female patient who suffered xanthoma in the knee joint on the basis of osteonecrosis of the knee joint. The primary clinical symptoms were knee joint pain and limited mobility. The patient initially received conventional treatment for osteonecrosis. However, there was no significant improvement. Later, we found a synovial xanthoma in the patient’s knee. Finally, she underwent arthroscopic excision of the knee joint synovial xanthoma. Following the procedure, her VAS score decreased from 7 to 2, and knee joint mobility increased from 10–103° to 10–140°. Through our follow-up, the patient did not exhibit symptom recurrence. This case is valuable as it provides a feasible therapeutic approach for future clinical applications.

Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disease worldwide. Osteocalcin plays an important role in energy metabolism. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of action of chemically synthesized osteocalcin (csOCN) in ameliorating NAFLD. We demonstrated for the first time that csOCN attenuates lipid accumulation in the liver and hepatocytes by modulating CD36 protein expression. In addition, we found that the expression of p-AMPK, FOXO1 and BCL6 decreased and the expression of CD36 increased after OA/PA induction compared to the control group, and these effects were reversed by the addition of csOCN. In contrast, the therapeutic effect of csOCN was inhibited by the addition of AMPK inhibitors and BCL6 inhibitors. This finding suggested that csOCN regulates CD36 expression via the AMPK-FOXO1/BCL6 axis. In NAFLD mice, oral administration of csOCN also activated the AMPK pathway and reduced CD36 expression. Molecular docking revealed that osteocalcin has a docking site with CD36. Compared to oleic acid and palmitic acid, osteocalcin bound more strongly to CD36. Laser confocal microscopy results showed that osteocalcin colocalized with CD36 at the cell membrane. In conclusion, we demonstrated the regulatory role of csOCN in fatty acid uptake pathways for the first time; it regulates CD36 expression via the AMPK-FOXO1/BCL6 axis to reduce fatty acid uptake, and it affects fatty acid transport by may directly binding to CD36. There are indications that csOCN has potential as a CD36-targeted drug for the treatment of NAFLD.

Abstract Adversarial patches, a type of adversarial example, pose serious security threats to deep neural networks (DNNs) by inducing erroneous outputs. Existing gradient stabilization methods aim to stabilize the optimization direction of adversarial examples through accumulating gradient momentum to enhance attack transferability on black-box models. However, they are not fully effective for adversarial patches. The accumulated momentum during optimization often misaligns with the optimization direction, reducing their efficacy in black-box scenarios. We introduce an optimization method called Alternating Minimization for Adversarial Patch (AMAP). This method decomposes the original AP into multiple sub-patches and utilizes their update direction to stabilize the optimization of the original AP. Additionally, we propose an adaptive step size optimization method that accelerates convergence and boosts the attack performance. In face recognition tasks, AMAP outperforms baseline methods by a remarkable 5.21% and exceeds the second-best method by 1.4%. Furthermore, AMAP demonstrates practical feasibility in the physical domain, highlighting its potential for robust computer security testing applications.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) stands as the predominant form of dementia, presenting significant and escalating global challenges. Its etiology is intricate and diverse, stemming from a combination of factors such as aging, genetics, and environment. Our current understanding of AD pathologies involves various hypotheses, such as the cholinergic, amyloid, tau protein, inflammatory, oxidative stress, metal ion, glutamate excitotoxicity, microbiota-gut-brain axis, and abnormal autophagy. Nonetheless, unraveling the interplay among these pathological aspects and pinpointing the primary initiators of AD require further elucidation and validation. In the past decades, most clinical drugs have been discontinued due to limited effectiveness or adverse effects. Presently, available drugs primarily offer symptomatic relief and often accompanied by undesirable side effects. However, recent approvals of aducanumab (1) and lecanemab (2) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) present the potential in disrease-modifying effects. Nevertheless, the long-term efficacy and safety of these drugs need further validation. Consequently, the quest for safer and more effective AD drugs persists as a formidable and pressing task. This review discusses the current understanding of AD pathogenesis, advances in diagnostic biomarkers, the latest updates of clinical trials, and emerging technologies for AD drug development. We highlight recent progress in the discovery of selective inhibitors, dual-target inhibitors, allosteric modulators, covalent inhibitors, proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) modulators. Our goal is to provide insights into the prospective development and clinical application of novel AD drugs.

Abstract The present study aimed to explore the association between serum cystatin C (Cys-C) levels and visceral fat area (VFA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 208 previously diagnosed T2DM patients who visited our hospital from September 2019 to December 2021 were included and divided into three groups based on tertiles of Cys-C levels, namely, Groups C1, C2, and C3. The clinical data of the subjects were collected, biochemical parameters such as Cys-C levels were determined, and bioelectrical impedance analysis was applied to determine the VFA and subcutaneous fat area (SFA). The VFA in Group C1 was lower than that in Groups C2 and C3 (all P 0.05). Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed that the serum Cys-C level was positively correlated with age, VFA, SFA, insulin resistance index, waist circumference, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, serum creatinine level, and blood uric acid level (r = 0.543, 0.353, 0.168, 0.148, 0.365, 0.264, 0.25, 0.497, and 0.155, respectively; P

Abstract Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to multi-carbon products is a promising approach for achieving carbon-neutral economies. However, the energy efficiency of these processes remains low, particularly at high current densities. Herein, we demonstrate that the low energy efficiencies are, in part, sometimes significantly, attributed to the high concentration overpotential resulting from the instability (i.e., flooding) of catalyst-layer during electrolysis. To tackle this challenge, we develop copper/gallium bimetallic catalysts with reduced activation energies for the formation of multi-carbon products. Consequently, the reduced activation overpotential allows us to achieve practical-relevant current densities for CO2 reduction at low cathodic potentials, ensuring good stability of the catalyst-layer and thereby minimizing the undesired concentration overpotential. The optimized bimetallic catalyst achieves over 50% cathodic energy efficiency for multi-carbon production at a high current density of over $$1.0 \, {{\rm{A}}} \, {{\rm{cm}}}^{-2}$$ 1.0 A cm − 2 . Furthermore, we achieve current densities exceeding $$2.0 \, {{\rm{A}}} \, {{\rm{cm}}}^{-2}$$ 2.0 A cm − 2 in a zero-gap membrane-electrode-assembly reactor, with a full-cell energy efficiency surpassing 30%.

Abstract Background Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are the prominent cell type in the tumor microenvironment (TME), and CAF subsets have been identified in various tumors. However, how CAFs spatially coordinate other cell populations within the liver TME to promote cancer progression remains unclear. Methods We combined multi-region proteomics (6 patients, 24 samples), 10X Genomics Visium spatial transcriptomics (11 patients, 25 samples), and multiplexed imaging (92 patients, 264 samples) technologies to decipher the expression heterogeneity, functional diversity, spatial distribution, colocalization, and interaction of fibroblasts. The newly identified CAF subpopulation was validated by cells isolated from 5 liver cancer patients and in vitro functional assays. Results We identified a liver CAF subpopulation, marked by the expression of COL1A2, COL4A1, COL4A2, CTGF, and FSTL1, and named F5-CAF. F5-CAF is preferentially located within and around tumor nests and colocalizes with cancer cells with higher stemness in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Multiplexed staining of 92 patients and the bulk transcriptome of 371 patients demonstrated that the abundance of F5-CAFs in HCC was associated with a worse prognosis. Further in vitro experiments showed that F5-CAFs isolated from liver cancer patients can promote the proliferation and stemness of HCC cells. Conclusions We identified a CAF subpopulation F5-CAF in liver cancer, which is associated with cancer stemness and unfavorable prognosis. Our results provide potential mechanisms by which the CAF subset in the TME promotes the development of liver cancer by supporting the survival of cancer stem cells.

Abstract Background Positive solitude, taken as a meaningful activity, contributes to the improvement of health, well-being, and quality of life of older adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Positive Solitude Scale (PS) among Chinese older to provide a reference for related research. Methods A convenience sample of 608 older people from 10 provinces in China was used to conduct the survey. Results The Chinese version of the PS consisted of 9 items with a unidimensional structure, which could explain 60.91% of the variance. The factor loadings of each item ranged from 0.67 to 0.82, and the communality ranged from 0.44 to 0.68. The confirmatory factor analysis showed good model fit (χ2/df = 2.771, RMSEA = 0.076, CFI = 0.972, IFI = 0.972, TLI = 0.959, PNFI = 0.665, PCFI = 0.675). It was found from the criterion-related validity test that PS scores were significantly and positively correlated with Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness scores (r = 0.45 to 0.44); PS scores were significantly and negatively correlated with Short-Form UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-6), Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), Ego Depletion Scale (EDS), and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-2nd Edition (AAQ-II) (r = -0.27 to -0.36). The Cronbach’s α coefficient value for the scale was 0.917; the split-half reliability coefficient value was 0.928. In addition, the PS showed cross-gender consistency. Conclusions The PS presented favorable psychometric characteristics in older people, which can be used as a valid tool for assessing older people’s positive solitude.

Abstract Objective Closure surgery of patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been found to effectively control cryptogenic stroke and migraine, but it is uncertain whether PFO closure could also alleviate epileptic seizures. This study aims to observe the therapeutic effect of PFO closure on epileptic seizures. Methods Since July 11th, 2017, in the neurology department of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, we have been regularly monitoring patients with epilepsy who have undergone PFO closure. The patient's clinical information, such as frequency, duration, and severity of seizures, before and after surgery was recorded in detail as well as postoperative safety events. Results Of the 31 epilepsy patients who confirmed PFO observed (27 cases were drug‐resistant epilepsy, 87.10%), average age of surgery was 23.74 years, and 12 cases were female (38.71%). After one‐year follow‐up, 26 patients (83.87%) achieved remission of seizure frequency, and 22 of whom (70.97%) experienced a remission of more than 50%. Additionally, compared to before surgery, 22 cases (70.97%) reported a decrease in the average seizure duration, and 20 cases (64.52%) reported a reduction in seizure severity. Objective China's oil and gas exploration is advancing towards the field of shale oil and gas. Overpressure is commonly developed in organic shale, and the lack of prediction methods for shale pore pressure restricts the research on shale oil and gas. Methods This article analyses the physical response characteristics of rock to hydrocarbon generation, pressurization and disequilibrium compaction. Based on density and sound velocity data, the differential responses of hydrocarbon generation pressurization and disequilibrium compaction pressurization were analysed. The hydrocarbon generation pressurization amount is calculated using sound velocity and density, and the disequilibrium compaction is calculated using the density data. Finally, the sound velocity rebound method was established. This article selects the Bodong Depression, which has superior hydrocarbon generation conditions, as a case study. First, comprehensive mudstone compaction curves, loading-unloading curves, and sound velocity-density diagrams are used to comprehensively identify the cause of overpressure. Then, the sound velocity rebound method is used to quantitatively calculate the pressure increase and formation pore pressure of a single well under compaction and hydrocarbon generation, and the results are compared with those of numerical simulations and conventional calculation methods. Results Taking the LD21-A well as an example, shale overpressure is caused by a combination of hydrocarbon generation and disequilibrium compaction. The pressure prediction results show that the overpressure of nonsource rock layers is contributed by the disequilibrium compaction. The overpressure of the source rock formation is contributed by hydrocarbon generation and disequilibrium compaction, with hydrocarbon generation pressurization mainly distributed between 5 MPa and 15 MPa (accounting for approximately 35% to 65%), and the measured pressure point hydrocarbon generation pressurization is 11.09 MPa (accounting for 45%). Conclusion This new method is vital of importance for the research of both shale and conventional oil and gas fields.

The resurgence of European nationalism has become an important phenomenon in the current European political landscape. The structural tension between national nationalism and regional integration is the main contradiction in the development of European countries. This paper analyzes the manifestation and path of the resurgence of European nationalism with the help of post-functionalist theoretical tools, pays attention to the challenges of nationalism to the existing jurisdiction of European integration, better grasp the current European situation, stimulates European supranational institutions to reflect deeply on nationalism, and promotes European integration to a more comprehensive and inclusive direction.

Abstract Skillful subseasonal forecasts are crucial for various sectors of society but pose a grand scientific challenge. Recently, machine learning-based weather forecasting models outperform the most successful numerical weather predictions generated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), but have not yet surpassed conventional models at subseasonal timescales. This paper introduces FuXi Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (FuXi-S2S), a machine learning model that provides global daily mean forecasts up to 42 days, encompassing five upper-air atmospheric variables at 13 pressure levels and 11 surface variables. FuXi-S2S, trained on 72 years of daily statistics from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis data, outperforms the ECMWF’s state-of-the-art Subseasonal-to-Seasonal model in ensemble mean and ensemble forecasts for total precipitation and outgoing longwave radiation, notably enhancing global precipitation forecast. The improved performance of FuXi-S2S can be primarily attributed to its superior capability to capture forecast uncertainty and accurately predict the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), extending the skillful MJO prediction from 30 days to 36 days. Moreover, FuXi-S2S not only captures realistic teleconnections associated with the MJO but also emerges as a valuable tool for discovering precursor signals, offering researchers insights and potentially establishing a new paradigm in Earth system science research.

Abstract The regulation of circadian rhythms and the sleep–wake states involves in multiple neural circuits. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a circadian pacemaker that controls the rhythmic oscillation of mammalian behaviors. The basal forebrain (BF) is a critical brain region of sleep–wake regulation, which is the downstream of the SCN. Retrograde tracing of cholera toxin subunit B showed a direct projection from the SCN to the horizontal limbs of diagonal band (HDB), a subregion of the BF. However, the underlying function of the SCN–HDB pathway remains poorly understood. Herein, activation of this pathway significantly increased non–rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep during the dark phase by using optogenetic recordings. Moreover, activation of this pathway significantly induced NREM sleep during the dark phase for first 4 h by using chemogenetic methods. Taken together, these findings reveal that the SCN–HDB pathway participates in NREM sleep regulation and provides direct evidence of a novel SCN-related pathway involved in sleep–wake states regulation.

Abstract Background Striga asiatica (L.) O. Kuntze is a traditional medicinal plant rich in flavonoids, which has various pharmacological effects such as anti-hepatitis and antioxidant activities. However, there is a scarcity of resources, and artificial cultivation has not yet been achieved. This study explored the association between flavonoid metabolites and soil physicochemical properties and trace elements in different habitats, with the aim of offering theoretical guidance for the high-quality artificial cultivation of S. asiatica. Results The results showed that S. asiatica has low requirements for soil fertility and prefers to grow in acidic soil with high contents of potassium and available potassium, while low contents of phosphorus, nitrogen and alkali hydrolyzed nitrogen. Additionally, 1592 kinds of metabolites were identified from S. asiatica, including 78 flavonoids. Conclusions The flavonoid metabolites were strongly related to soil factors. Reasonable application of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers as well as controlling the contents of sodium, manganese and boron in the soil, can promote the synthesis of flavonoid metabolites in the plant. Moreover, kaempferide, glycitein, luteolin, apigenin and genistein may be the metabolic markers for identifying different regions. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a type of breast cancer that is negative for oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, is highly malignant and aggressive, lacks of corresponding targeted therapy, and has a relatively poor prognosis. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of TNBC development and formulating effective treatment strategies for inducing cell death are still urgent tasks in the treatment of TNBC. Research has shown that uncarboxylated osteocalcin can promote the proliferation of prostate cancer, lung adenocarcinoma and TNBC cells, but the mechanism by which GluOC affects TNBC growth and metastasis needs further study. Methods MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells were used for in vitro cell analysis. Key target molecules or pathways were identified by RNA sequencing, and migration ability was detected by scratch assays, Transwell assays, cell adhesion assays and western blot analysis. Fluorescence staining, colony detection, qRT‒PCR and flow cytometry were used to detect apoptosis, oxidative stress, the cell cycle and the stemness of cancer cells, and a xenotransplantation model in BALB/C nude mice was used for in vivo analysis. Results This study demonstrated that GluOC facilitates the migration of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells through the ROCK1/MYPT1/MLC2 signalling pathway and promotes the proliferation of TNBC cells via the ROCK1/JAK2/PIK3CA/AKT signalling pathway. Experiments in nude mice demonstrated that GluOC promoted tumour cell proliferation and metastasis in tumour-bearing mice, which further clarified the molecular mechanism of TNBC growth and invasion. Conclusion Our findings highlight the importance of GluOC in driving TNBC progression and its association with poor patient outcomes. This study clarifies the functional effects of GluOC on TNBC growth, providing insight into the molecular basis of TNBC and potentially providing new ideas for developing targeted therapies to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract Continuous hemodynamic monitoring in a wearable means can play a crucial role in managing hypertension and preventing catastrophic cardiovascular events. In this study, we have described the fully wearable tonometric device, referred to as flexible adaptive sensing tonometry (FAST), which is capable of continuous and accurate monitoring of hemodynamic parameters within the medical-grade precision. In particular, the FAST system integrates a 1 × 8 unit array of highly sensitive and highly flexible iontronic sensing (FITS) with 1 mm spatial resolution and a closed-loop motion system. The flexible tonometric architecture has been used to determine the radial arterial position with high sensitivity and high conformability, which simplifies the biaxial searching process of the traditional applanation tonometry into a highly efficient uniaxial applanation while keeping the medical-precision assessments. Importantly, a self-calibration algorithm can be automatically implemented during the applanation process, from which the intra-arterial blood pressure wave can be continuously predicted within the medical-grade precision, and subsequently, multi-parametric hemodynamic analysis can be performed in real-time. Experimental validations on health volunteers have demonstrated that the FAST measurements are all within the required accuracy of the clinical standards for continuous pulse wave assessments, blood pressure monitoring as well as other key hemodynamic parameter evaluations. Therefore, the FAST system, by integrating the flexible iontronic sensing array, provides a real-time, medical-grade hemodynamic monitoring solution in a continuously wearable manner, from which remote patient-centered monitoring can be delivered with both medical precision and convenience.

Abstract Achieving stable and reliable 2D-2D van der Waals heterostructures remains challenging. The broadest strategy for synthesizing these heterostructures is growth or manually stacking one material on top of the other, yet it is inefficient. Here, we present a strategy for synthesizing covalently bonded MoS2-graphene heterostructures using organic linkers with two anchor sites at a low cost. Our covalent heterostructures exhibit a more homogeneously alternating structure than the corresponding randomly alternating structure of vdW heterostructures, as confirmed by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) measurements. Moreover, different linkers can be used to adjust the interlayer distance between graphene and MoS2, leading to significant impacts on their optical and electrochemical properties, including Photoluminescence (PL), cyclic voltammetry (CV), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and SERS. Our strategy offers opportunities to advance fundamental research and enable the practical application of 2D/2D van der Waals heterostructures in various fields, including optoelectronics, energy storage, and catalysis.

Background/Aims To determine the association between evolutionary changes in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) status and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a nationwide population-based cohort. Methods Information on study participants was derived from the Korea National Health Insurance Service database. The study population consisted of 5,080,410 participants who underwent two consecutive biennial health screenings between 2009 and 2012. All participants were followed up until HCC, death, or 31 December 2020. The association of evolutionary changes in MASLD status, as assessed by the fatty liver index and cardiometabolic risk factors, including persistent non-MASLD, resolved MASLD, incident MASLD, and persistent MASLD, with HCC risk was evaluated using multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Among the 5,080,410 participants with 39,910,331 person-years of follow-up, 4,801 participants developed HCC. The incidence of HCC in participants with resolved, incident, and persistent MASLD was approximately 2.2-, 2.3-, and 4.7-fold higher, respectively, than that in those with persistent non-MASLD among the Korean adult population. Novel plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2 toughened (Zr, Ti, W, Ta)C medium-entropy ceramics were designed based on the atomic scale, nanoscale, and microscale, and prepared via the in-situ reaction hot-pressing adopting (Ti, W, Ta)C and ZrB2 powders. The multiphase ceramics were primarily composed of the (Zr, Ti, W, Ta)C matrix and plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2. When the addition of ZrB2 exceeds 50 mol%, the residual ZrB2 causes the secondary primary phase to change from (Ti, Zr)B2 to (Zr, Ti)B2. The improvement of fracture toughness is primarily influenced by the plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2 on crack propagation mechanisms such as bridging effect and crack deflection. (Ti, W, Ta)C- 50 mol% ZrB2 (raw powder composition) exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, boasting a Vickers hardness of 24.9 GPa, fracture toughness of 5.5 MPa·m1/2, and flexural strength of 552 MPa, which present a novel avenue for achieving a synergistic enhancement in Vickers hardness and fracture toughness within medium-entropy carbide ceramics.

Abstract Controlling the concentrations of H2O and CO2 at the reaction interface is crucial for achieving efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction. However, precise control of these variables during catalysis remains challenging, and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Herein, guided by a multi-physics model, we demonstrate that tuning the local H2O/CO2 concentrations is achievable by thin polymer coatings on the catalyst surface. Beyond the often-explored hydrophobicity, polymer properties of gas permeability and water-uptake ability are even more critical for this purpose. With these insights, we achieve CO2 reduction on copper with Faradaic efficiency exceeding 87% towards multi-carbon products at a high current density of −2 A cm−2. Encouraging cathodic energy efficiency (>50%) is also observed at this high current density due to the substantially reduced cathodic potential. Additionally, we demonstrate stable CO2 reduction for over 150 h at practically relevant current densities owning to the robust reaction interface. Moreover, this strategy has been extended to membrane electrode assemblies and other catalysts for CO2 reduction. Our findings underscore the significance of fine-tuning the local H2O/CO2 balance for future CO2 reduction applications.

Abstract Friction as a fundamental physical phenomenon dominates nature and human civilization, among which the achievement of molecular rolling lubrication is desired to bring another breakthrough, like the macroscale design of wheel. Herein, an edge self-curling nanodeformation phenomenon of graphite nanosheets (GNSs) at cryogenic temperature is found, which is then used to promote the formation of graphite nanorollers in friction process towards molecular rolling lubrication. The observation of parallel nanorollers at the friction interface give the experimental evidence for the occurrence of molecular rolling lubrication, and the graphite exhibits abnormal lubrication performance in vacuum with ultra-low friction and wear at macroscale. The molecular rolling lubrication mechanism is elucidated from the electronic interaction perspective. Experiments and theoretical simulations indicate that the driving force of the self-curling is the uneven atomic shrinkage induced stress, and then the shear force promotes the intact nanoroller formation, while the constraint of atomic vibration decreases the dissipation of driving stress and favors the nanoroller formation therein. It will open up a new pathway for controlling friction at microscale and nanostructural manipulation.

Abstract Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and enzymes (AMEs) are promising non-antibiotic candidates against antimicrobial resistance but suffer from low efficiency and poor stability. Here, we develop peptide nanozymes which mimic the mode of action of AMPs and AMEs through de novo design and peptide assembly. Through modelling a minimal building block of IHIHICI is proposed by combining critical amino acids in AMPs and AMEs and hydrophobic isoleucine to conduct assembly. Experimental validations reveal that IHIHICI assemble into helical β-sheet nanotubes with acetate modulation and perform phospholipase C-like and peroxidase-like activities with Ni coordination, demonstrating high thermostability and resistance to enzymatic degradation. The assembled nanotubes demonstrate cascade antifungal actions including outer mannan docking, wall disruption, lipid peroxidation and subsequent ferroptotic death, synergistically killing >90% Candida albicans within 10 min on disinfection pad. These findings demonstrate an effective de novo design strategy for developing materials with multi-antimicrobial mode of actions.

Abstract Background Increasing evidence suggests that leptin is involved in the pathology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, our objective was to investigate the levels of leptin in the blood of children with ASD and to examine the overall profile of adipokine markers in ASD through meta-analysis. Methods Leptin concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, while adipokine profiling, including leptin, was performed via meta-analysis. Original reports that included measurements of peripheral adipokines in ASD patients and healthy controls (HCs) were collected from databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. These studies were collected from September 2022 to September 2023 and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Standardized mean differences were calculated using a random effects model for the meta-analysis. Additionally, we performed meta-regression and explored heterogeneity among studies. Abstract Background Women at middle age are puzzled by a series of menopausal disturbances, can be distressing and considerably affect the personal, social and work lives. We aim to estimate the global prevalence of nineteen menopausal symptoms among middle-aged women by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods Comprehensive search was performed in multiple databases from January, 2000 to March, 2023 for relevant studies. Random-effect model with double-arcsine transformation was used for data analysis. Results A total of 321 studies comprised of 482,067 middle-aged women were included for further analysis. We found varied prevalence of menopausal symptoms, with the highest prevalence of joint and muscular discomfort (65.43%, 95% CI 62.51–68.29) and lowest of formication (20.5%, 95% CI 13.44–28.60). Notably, South America shared dramatically high prevalence in a sort of menopausal symptoms including depression and urogenital symptoms. Objective Total hip arthroplasty (THA) effectively treats end‐stage hemophilic hip arthropathy. Given hemophilia's unique characteristics, perioperative bleeding remains a significant risk for patients undergoing THA. Tranexamic acid (TXA), an efficient antifibrinolytic agent, may benefit the outcomes of THA for patients with hemophilia (PWH). This study aims to explore the clinical efficacy of intra‐articular injection of TXA in treating perioperative bleeding in PWH and assess its additional clinical benefits. Methods The retrospective study comprised data of PWH who received THA from January 2015 to December 2021 in the research center. A total of 59 individuals were included in the study, divided into a TXA group (n = 31) and a non‐TXA group (n = 28). Abstract Significant structural differences in DNN-based object detectors hinders the transferability of adversarial attacks. Studies show that intermediate features extracted by the detector contain more model-independent information, and disrupting these features can enhance attack transferability across different detectors. However, the challenge lies in selecting crucial features that impact detection from redundant intermediate features. To address this issue, we introduce the Deep information bottleneck universal adversarial perturbation (DIB-UAP). DIB-UAP utilizes the deep information bottleneck to establish a link between intermediate features and model output, extracting crucial intermediate features and disrupting them to generate UAP with strong attack transferability. Additionally, we propose a data augmentation method, Scale & Tile, which effectively enhances the attack performance of UAP on medium and large-scale objects. Testing on two benchmark datasets with eight comparative methods across four black-box mainstream detectors has confirmed the attack transferability of DIB-UAP. Furthermore, practical utility validation of DIB-UAP has been conducted on a commercial object detection platform.

Abstract Self-distillation method guides the model learning via transferring knowledge of the model itself, which has shown the advantages in object segmentation. However, it has been proved that uncertain pixels with predicted probability close to 0.5 will restrict the model performance. The existing self-distillation methods cannot guide the model to enhance its learning ability for uncertain pixels, so the improvement is limited. To boost the student model’s learning ability for uncertain pixels, a novel self-distillation method is proposed. Firstly, the predicted probability in the current training sample and the ground truth label are fused to construct the teacher knowledge, as the current predicted information can express the performance of student models and represent the uncertainty of pixels more accurately. Secondly, a quadratic mapping function between the predicted probabilities of the teacher and student model is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed method using the mapping function can guide the model to enhance the learning ability for uncertain pixels. Finally, the essential difference of utilizing the predicted probability of the student model in self-distillation is discussed in detail. Extensive experiments were conducted on models with convolutional neural networks and Transformer architectures as the backbone networks. The results on four public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively improve the student model performance.

Abstract Schizophrenia (SCZ), which affects approximately 1% of the world’s population, is a global public health concern. It is generally considered that the interplay between genes and the environment is important in the onset and/or development of SCZ. Although several whole-exome sequencing studies have revealed rare risk variants of SCZ, no rare coding variants have been strongly replicated. Assessing isolated populations under extreme conditions might lead to the discovery of variants with a recent origin, which are more likely to have a higher frequency than chance to reflect gene-environment interactions. Following this approach, we examined a unique cohort of Tibetans living at an average altitude above 4500 meters. Whole-exome sequencing of 47 SCZ cases and 53 controls revealed 275 potential novel risk variants and two known variants (12:46244485: A/G and 22:18905934: A/G) associated with SCZ that were found in existing databases. Only one gene (C5orf42) in the gene-based statistics surpassed the exome-wide significance in the cohort. Metascape enrichment analysis suggested that novel risk genes were strongly enriched in pathways relevant to hypoxia, neurodevelopment, and neurotransmission. Additionally, 47 new risk genes were followed up in Han sample of 279 patients with SCZ and 95 controls, only BAI2 variant appearing in one case. Our findings suggest that SCZ patients living at high altitudes may have a unique risk gene signature, which may provide additional information on the underlying biology of SCZ, which can be exploited to identify individuals at greater risk of exposure to hypoxia.

Abstract Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease affecting the digestive tract, the incidence of which is on the rise worldwide. The most common clinical manifestation of hemophilia is arthropathy secondary to recurrent joint effusions and chronic synovitis. This article reports on a rare 25-year-old male patient with both hemophilic arthropathy and Crohn’s disease who was at risk for pathogenic gastrointestinal bleeding. After undergoing endoscopic pathologic testing and genetic testing, a multidisciplinary expert work-up of a treatment and nutritional plan was performed. The patient improved clinically and adhered to conservative treatment. This case report is the first report of this rare co-morbidity, demonstrating the highly pathogenic mutation locus and summarizing the clinical experience of early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract Unequal social media attention can lead to potentially uneven distribution of disaster-relief funds, resulting in long-term inequality among regions after disasters. This study aimed to measure inequalities in social media attention to regions during disasters and explore the role of official media in reducing such inequality. This is performed by employing social media, official media, and official aggregated statistics regarding China’s rainstorm disasters. Through a set of panel-data regressions and robustness tests, three main conclusions were drawn: (1) There were inequalities among regions regarding social media attention they received during rainstorm disasters. For disasters of the same magnitude, regions with low economic outcome per capita received less attention on social media. (2) Official media can reduce inequality in social media attention during disasters. Official media statements can encourage netizens to pay attention to disaster-stricken areas, and especially the overlooked underdeveloped areas. (3) Of all the measures taken by official media, timely, accurate, and open disclosure of disaster occurrences proved to be the most potent means of leveling the playing field in terms of social media attention; contrarily, promotional or booster-type messages proved futile in this regard. These findings revealed the vulnerabilities within social media landscapes that affect disaster relief response, shedding light on the role of official guidance in mitigating inequalities in social media attention during such crises. Our study advises social media stakeholders and policymakers on formulating more equitable crisis communication strategies to bridge the gap in social media attention and foster a more balanced and just relief process.

Abstract Flat electronic bands are expected to show proportionally enhanced electron correlations, which may generate a plethora of novel quantum phases and unusual low-energy excitations. They are increasingly being pursued in d-electron-based systems with crystalline lattices that feature destructive electronic interference, where they are often topological. Such flat bands, though, are generically located far away from the Fermi energy, which limits their capacity to partake in the low-energy physics. Here we show that electron correlations produce emergent flat bands that are pinned to the Fermi energy. We demonstrate this effect within a Hubbard model, in the regime described by Wannier orbitals where an effective Kondo description arises through orbital-selective Mott correlations. Moreover, the correlation effect cooperates with symmetry constraints to produce a topological Kondo semimetal. Our results motivate a novel design principle for Weyl Kondo semimetals in a new setting, viz. d-electron-based materials on suitable crystal lattices, and uncover interconnections among seemingly disparate systems that may inspire fresh understandings and realizations of correlated topological effects in quantum materials and beyond.

Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by persistent airway inflammation even after cigarette smoking cessation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been implicated in COPD severity and acute airway inflammation induced by short-term cigarette smoke (CS). However, whether and how NETs contribute to sustained airway inflammation in COPD remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the immunoregulatory mechanism of NETs in COPD, employing human neutrophils, airway epithelial cells (AECs), dendritic cells (DCs), and a long-term CS-induced COPD mouse model, alongside cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthase and toll-like receptor 9 knockout mice (cGAS -−/− , TLR9 −/− ); Additionally, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of COPD patients was examined. Neutrophils from COPD patients released greater cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced NETs (CSE-NETs) due to mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction. These CSE-NETs, containing oxidatively-damaged DNA (NETs-DNA), promoted AECs proliferation, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation, NF-κB-dependent cytokines and type-I interferons production, and DC maturation, which were ameliorated/reversed by silencing/inhibition of cGAS/TLR9. In the COPD mouse model, blocking NETs-DNA-sensing via cGAS −/− and TLR9 −/− mice, inhibiting NETosis using mitoTEMPO, and degrading NETs-DNA with DNase-I, respectively, reduced NETs infiltrations, airway inflammation, NF-κB activation and NF-κB-dependent cytokines, but not type-I interferons due to IFN-α/β receptor degradation. Elevated NETs components (myeloperoxidase and neutrophil elastase activity) in BALF of COPD smokers correlated with disease severity and NF-κB-dependent cytokine levels, but not type-I interferon levels. In conclusion, NETs-DNA promotes NF-κB-dependent autoimmunity via cGAS/TLR9 in long-term CS exposure-induced COPD. Therefore, targeting NETs-DNA and cGAS/TLR9 emerges as a potential strategy to alleviate persistent airway inflammation in COPD.

Abstract DC distribution networks (DCDNs) possess the advantages of high power efficiency, low operation loss, and favourable control flexibility, and are regarded as an essential form of future power distribution systems. In order to increase the voltage transient performance of DCDNs against disturbances, this paper proposes a methodology for realising the active voltage support control of DCDNs based on virtual inertia coordination. Firstly, the impact of the inertia of DCDNs towards the transient voltage change is analysed, and the active voltage support mechanism considering the variable droop inertia control and virtual DC motor inertia (VDCMI) control is explored. Then, a time sequence coordination strategy based on the voltage grading of DCDNs is developed, and an adaptive inertia coefficient is designed to achieve the inertia adjustment in terms of the voltage sag and recovery processes. Using MATLAB/Simulink, a detailed model of the double‐terminal DCDNs is created to check the efficacy of the proposed approach. Different voltage disturbance scenarios are imitated, and the comparative simulations demonstrate that the proposed approach can fully utilise the inertia potential of the DCDNs to suppress the voltage sag and smooth the voltage recovery procedure. The proposed method's validity and feasibility can be well validated. Abstract With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality, active distribution networks (DNs) with a high proportion of photovoltaics (PVs) are facing challenges in maintaining voltage stability and low‐carbon operation. Energy storage systems (ESSs), which have the ability to store and transfer energy temporarily, can be used as effective measures to enhance the capacity of consuming PVs and reduce carbon emissions in DNs. However, existing low‐carbon dispatch strategies for multiple sources, storages and loads fail to consider voltage violations, while the temporal carbon emission intensity of the upper‐level power grid is also often overlooked, which is an important factor that affects the dispatch strategy. Therefore, a two‐stage self‐adaptive dispatch strategy of ESSs that considers the temporal characteristics of slack nodal carbon emission intensity to minimise carbon emissions while maintaining voltage stability in DNs with high access to PVs is proposed. First, the framework of the proposed two‐stage self‐adaptive dispatch strategy of ESSs is established by taking into account the effects of ESSs on adjusting voltages and reducing carbon emissions, respectively, with the two‐stage switch principle of two operation modes being determined. On this basis, an optimization dispatch model is established to improve voltages and carbon emissions, and the optimal day‐ahead dispatch strategy of ESSs can be obtained by solving the model using genetic algorithm. Case studies of the modified 10 kV IEEE 33‐node DN and IEEE 123‐node DN verify the feasibility and superiority of the proposed two‐stage self‐adaptive security and low‐carbon day‐ahead dispatch strategy for ESSs, showing that the voltage stabilisation and lower carbon emissions of DNs are both improved.

Abstract Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have the functions of wastewater treatment and power generation. The incorporation of modified anodes enhances the sustainable power generation performance of MFCs. In this study, to evaluate the feasibility of sodium alginate (SA) as a biocompatible binder, hydrogel mixed with super activated carbon (SAC) and SA was modified the carbon cloth anode of MFC. The results showed that the maximum output voltage in the SAC/SA hydrogel modified anode MFC was 0.028 V, which was increased by 115%, compared with the blank carbon cloth anode. The internal resistance of MFC was 9429 Ω, which was 18% lower than that of control (11560 Ω). The maximum power density was 6.14 mW/m2, which was increased by 365% compared to the control. After modification of SAC/SA hydrogel, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached to 56.36% and was 12.72% higher than the control. Coulombic efficiency with modified anode MFC reached 17.65%, which was increased by 104%, compared with the control. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing SA as a biocompatible binder for anode modification, thereby imparting sustainable and enhanced power generation performance to MFCs. This study presented a new selectivity for harnessing algal bioresources and improving anode binders in future MFC applications.

In this paper, we apply the variational approach for solving the time-space fractal Bogoyavlenskii equation. By the two-scale fractal complex transformation, the fractal modification of Bogoyarlenskii equation is equivalently rewritten as the original Bogoyavlenskii equation. By variational principle, different type solutions including fractal bright soliton solution, fractal bright-like soliton solution, fractal kinky-bright soliton solution and fractal periodic wave solution are provided, which are not touched in the existing literature. Numerical results are presented to show the propagation behaviours.

Chronic non-healing wounds induced by oxidative stress and inflammation can activate inflammatory cells and produce large amounts of inflammatory mediators, which fail to maintain homeostasis in the skin and delay the wound-healing process. To tackle this issue, heparin-loaded hierarchical composite scaffolds comprised of electrospun fibers and electrosprayed microspheres were prepared to act as an effective anti-inflammatory wound dressing. Microspheres with different electrosprayed densities were deposited into the surface of the electrospun fibers for the improvement of surface topographical cues and cellular activities. The results indicated that the electrospun fibers followed by electrosprayed for 3 ​min to fabricate the composite fiber/microsphere scaffolds contributed to the best performance in terms of promoting cellular activities, with no obvious cytotoxicity, good adhesion morphology, and the fastest cell migration rate. In addition, a suitable amount of heparin was added to the composite scaffolds to alleviate inflammation. The significant adsorption efficiency of heparin-loaded composite scaffolds on inflammatory mediator MCP-1 indicates a favorable anti-inflammation effect in vitro. Furthermore, the heparin-loaded hierarchical scaffolds accelerated the pace of inflammatory wound healing in vivo when compared to commercial 3 ​M Tegaderm and non-heparin-loaded scaffolds. Our work provided a facile strategy for fabricating heparin-loaded hierarchical fiber/microsphere scaffolds to modulate cellular activities via topographical cues and accelerating the inflammatory wound healing process by electrostatic interactions between heparin and MCP-1. These findings suggested that the heparin-loaded hierarchical scaffold was expected to be a promising dressing for inflammatory wound healing.

Phase decomposition can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of carbide ceramics and can overcome the difficulty of enhancing the mechanical properties of single-phase multicomponent carbide ceramics. In this work, a series of nonstoichiometric (TiZrVNb)Cx ceramics were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at different temperatures. The effects of the carbon content on the phase composition, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties were investigated in detail. Phase decomposition occurred with decreasing carbon content. Two different solid solutions of (Ti,V)-rich and Zr-rich phases formed from the decomposition of equimolar single-phase solid solutions, namely, the Zr-poor phase and Zr-rich phase, respectively. The distribution of Nb element is relatively uniform. The semicoherent interfaces between the Zr-poor phase and the Zr-rich phase can harden and strengthen effectively under the synergistic effect of grain refinement. Ceramics with phase decomposition structures have apparent advantages compared to single-phase high-entropy carbides. This work provides an important train of thought for the microstructure tailoring and properties optimization of multi-component carbide ceramics.

To address the relatively mediocre mechanical properties of single-phase multi-component carbide ceramics, a phase transition from a single phase to multiple phases was proposed to achieve superior mechanical properties. A series of (TiZrVxNb)C0.8 ceramics with different V contents were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The influence of the V content on the phase composition, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties was investigated in detail. The transition behavior from a single phase to multiple phases is discovered and discussed. The formation of the Zr-rich phase and Zr-poor phase can be attributed to the increase in lattice distortion and mixed enthalpy caused by the addition of V. A nanometer lamellar structure with a semi-coherent interface obtained via in situ decomposition is reported for the first time in multi-component carbide ceramics. The semi-coherent interfaces with high dislocation density and strain concentration effectively improve the mechanical properties, grain refinement, and multi-phase formation. The optimal comprehensive mechanical properties of the Vickers hardness (26.3 GPa), flexural strength (369 MPa), and fracture toughness (3.1 MPa·m1/2) were achieved for the sample with 20 mol% V.

The presence of microplastics in surface waters poses potential hazards to both organisms and human health. Traditional water treatment processes have proven to be inadequate in effectively removing microplastics. Besides, previous studies have often utilized disinfectant dosages that surpass those commonly employed in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), and the biotoxicity changes induced by microplastics after disinfection remain largely unexplored. To address these knowledge gaps, our study aimed to investigate the impact of practical disinfectant dosages on the leaching of organic compounds from microplastics and the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Furthermore, the resulting acute and genetic toxicity was evaluated through bioassays. Our findings revealed an elevated release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from microplastics. Additionally, both acute and genetic toxicity increased following various disinfection processes. Specifically, chlorination exhibited the highest level of toxicity in short-term disinfection, while the pretreatment of ozonation followed by residual chlorination demonstrated the highest toxicity in the long-term disinfection, which was correlated with the concentration of CHCl3 formed. These findings will advance our understanding of the potential risks associated with microplastics during various disinfection processes, with the ultimate goal of safeguarding water supplies. The fully dense Ti3SiC2-(Ti, Zr)B2 toughened (Ti, Zr)C-based composites were fabricated at 1400–1600 °C for the first time by dual in situ reactions hot-pressing with TiC, ZrB2, and Si as the initial powders. The influence of ZrB2, Si content and sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composite was reported. When 10 mol% ZrB2 was added, Si combined with residual TiC to form Ti3SiC2 and SiC. However, with the addition of ZrB2 increase to 20 mol% and 30 mol%, Si participated in the formation of ZrSi and was not enough to react with TiC to form Ti3SiC2. The low-temperature in situ reactions, multiphase coupling effects, and the pinning effect of nano-SiC refine the microstructure of the composites. There are specific crystal orientation relationships between (Zr, Ti)C and (Ti, Zr)B2, as well as between (Ti, Zr)C and SiC. The layered Ti3SiC2 and plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2 by dual in situ reactions effectively improve the fracture toughness of the composites. The 10 ZB-15 possesses a highest fracture toughness of 6.1 MPa⋅m1/2. The 30 ZB-16 has the good comprehensive mechanical properties. The fracture toughness, flexural strength, and hardness of 30 ZB-16 is 5.6 MPa⋅m1/2, 679 MPa, and 26.4 GPa, respectively. The Ti3SiC2 and TiB2 formed during dual in situ reactions enables the composite to exhibit excellent oxidation resistance and wear resistance.

Abstract Chronic endometritis is associated with the imbalance of female reproductive tract microbiota and pathogenic microbial infection. This study aimed to identify the specific changes in the endometrial microbiome in patients with endometritis and to explore how Clostridium tyrobutyricum (C.t) influences the progression of endometritis in mice for further elucidating endometritis pathogenesis. For this purpose, endometrial tissues from 100 participants were collected and divided into positive, weakly positive, and negative groups based on CD138 levels, while endometrial microbiome differences were detected and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-induced endometritis mouse model was established, followed by treatment with C.t, and inflammatory response, epithelial barrier, and TLR4/NF-κB pathway were evaluated. Results showed that α- and β-diversity was significantly lower in the positive group compared with the weakly positive or negative groups, where the negative group had more unique operational taxonomic units. The abundance of Proteobacteria was found to be increased, while that of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes was found to be reduced in the positive group, while the area under the curve value was found to be 0.664. Furthermore, C.t treatment resulted in the alleviation of S. aureus-induced inflammatory response, epithelial barrier damage, and activation of the TLR4/NF-κB pathway in mice. Clinical samples analysis revealed that the diversity and abundance of microbiota were altered in patients with endometritis having positive CD138 levels, while mechanistic investigations revealed C.t alleviated S. aureus-induced endometritis by inactivating TLR4/NF-κB pathway. The findings of this study are envisaged to provide a diagnostic and therapeutic potential of microbiota in endometritis.

The current study innovatively proposed to prepare TiC nanoparticles reinforced high-Cr hot work die steels through an aluminum master alloy. The influences of TiC nanoparticles on the microstructure and wear resistance of high-Cr hot work die steels were thoroughly investigated. It was found that the addition of nanoparticles refined the pro-eutectoid ferrite in the as-cast condition, and the granular pearlite in the isothermal spheroidized condition, respectively. After receiving the quenching and tempering heat treatment, the size of lath martensite, retained austenite and nanosized precipitates were reduced. The TiC nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous cores to improve the nucleation rates of austenite and ferrite during phase transformation. The finer grains with more grain boundaries and nanoparticles refined the size of tempered microstructure of high-Cr hot work die steels. In ball-on-plate reciprocating sliding wear tests, it was found that the presence of TiC nanoparticles enhanced the wear resistance of high-Cr hot work die steels under various test conditions. The nanoparticles increased the strength of the substrate and inhibited the formation of cracks. More grain boundaries and nanoparticles hindered the migration of dislocations, which resulted in less plastic deformation. Also, the nanoparticles could partially withstand the external load during the relative motion. The results obtained in this research provide applicable values for optimizing the strength-ductility and tribological performance of hot work die steels.

Abstract High-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is a severe neurological condition that can occur at high altitudes. It is characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the brain, leading to a range of symptoms, including severe headache, confusion, loss of coordination, and even coma and death. Exosomes play a crucial role in intercellular communication, and their contents have been found to change in various diseases. This study analyzed the metabolomic characteristics of blood exosomes from HACE patients compared to those from healthy controls (HCs) with the aim of identifying specific metabolites or metabolic pathways associated with the development of HACE conditions. A total of 21 HACE patients and 21 healthy controls were recruited for this study. Comprehensive metabolomic profiling of the serum exosome samples was conducted using ultraperformance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC‒MS/MS). Additionally, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis was performed to identify the metabolic pathways affected in HACE patients. Twenty-six metabolites, including ( +)-camphoric acid, choline, adenosine, adenosine 5′-monophosphate, deoxyguanosine 5′-monophosphate, guanosine, and hypoxanthine-9-β-D-arabinofuranoside, among others, exhibited significant changes in expression in HACE patients compared to HCs. Additionally, these differentially abundant metabolites were confirmed to be potential biomarkers for HACE. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed several pathways that significantly affect energy metabolism regulation (such as purine metabolism, thermogenesis, and nucleotide metabolism), estrogen-related pathways (the estrogen signaling pathway, GnRH signaling pathway, and GnRH pathway), cyclic nucleotide signaling pathways (the cGMP-PKG signaling pathway and cAMP signaling pathway), and hormone synthesis and secretion pathways (renin secretion, parathyroid hormone synthesis, secretion and action, and aldosterone synthesis and secretion). In patients with HACE, adenosine, guanosine, and hypoxanthine-9-β-D-arabinofuranoside were negatively correlated with height. Deoxyguanosine 5′-monophosphate is negatively correlated with weight and BMI. Additionally, LPE (18:2/0:0) and pregnanetriol were positively correlated with age. This study identified potential biomarkers for HACE and provided valuable insights into the underlying metabolic mechanisms of this disease. These findings may lead to potential targets for early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention in HACE patients.
