L’étude d’une série de vases du Néolithique récent sur le site de Geispolsheim « Forlen » a permis de définir le Munzingen C, l’étape finale de cette culture en Basse-Alsace (3650-3400 av. J.-C.). Cette définition repose avant tout sur une approche typologique qui a permis de mettre en évidence les fortes affinités existant avec la culture de Pfyn. Cette contribution se propose de compléter cette approche par une analyse technologique qui, bien que confirmant l’originalité de cette production et ses liens avec le Pfyn, permet aussi de mettre en lumière ses relations avec les productions tardives duCortaillod.

Die Freilegung 2019 eines kleinen frühbronzezeitlichen (2030-1900 v. Chr.) Bestattungsensemblesin Truchtersheim „Holderacker“, etwa 12 km nordwestlich von Straßburg, hat uns bewegt uns mit der gesamten für das Elsassverfügbaren Dokumentation der frühbronzezeitlichen Bestattungssitten zu befassen. Dieser bisher kaum dokumentiertechronologische Horizont wurde kürzlich durch eine Reihe von Funden bereichert, die vorwiegend zwischen 2017 und 2019bei präventivarchäologischen Operationen im Vorfeld der Bauarbeiten der Westumgehung von Straßburg entdeckt wurden.Das bescheidene regionale Corpus mit 20 Gräbern erlaubt nur begrenzte Beobachtungen, es weist jedoch doch mehrere für dieFrühbronzezeit charakteristische Eigenschaften auf, darunter die Variabilität der Orientierungen, die in zwei Gruppen aufgeteiltsind : Eine auch in der danubischen Gruppe in Bayern überwiegende Hauptgruppe, welche sowohl männliche als auch weiblicheIndividuen umfasst, die männlichen Individuen sind in linker Seitenlage bestattet, ihr Kopf ist nach NO orientiert, die weiblichenIndividuen sind in rechter Seitenlage bestattet mit Orientierung des Kopfes nach SW. Die zweite Gruppe umfasst ausschließlich inrechter Seitenlage bestattete Individuen mit Orientierung des Kopfes nach NW, wir schlagen vor, sie als weibliche Individuen zuidentifizieren. Diese Identifizierung im Gegensatz zu den männlichen Individuen beruht nicht auf dem Prinzip der horizontalenSymmetrie, welche die Hauptgruppe auszeichnet, sondern aufgrund einer vertikalen Symmetrie, Konfiguration, welche die südlicheOberrheinebene zu kennzeichnen scheint. Grabbeigaben sind selten und bestehen hauptsächlich, wie in Truchtersheim, ausSchmuckelementen aus Geweih und Knochen, seltenen begleitet von Metall- oder Keramikbeigaben. Die Zusammenstellung deraus sehr geläufigen Beigaben bestehenden Deponierungen erlaubt keine formelle Identifizierung möglicher Verbindungen mit denSiedlungsgemeinschaften Süd- oder Südwestdeutschlands. Jedoch bestehen wir auf der Hypothese einer privilegierten Beziehungzwischen der untersuchten Region und der Straubinger Gruppe des danubischen Kulturkomplexes und stützen uns dabei auf die Analyse der Orientierungen und deren Entwicklung im Laufe der Frühbronzezeit, sowie auf weitere Elemente wie die Existenz imElsass von Strukturen des Typs Totenhütten und Wohnbauten des Typs Eching/Öberau. Schließlich unterstreichen wir das Fehlenregionaler Datenbestände, welche den Übergang von der Glockenbecherkultur zu den frühbronzezeitlichen Gruppen (2150 und 2000v. Chr.) illustrieren, die wir aus den nahen Nekropolen von Singen in Baden oder Remseck-Aldingen im Neckartal kennen., In 2019, a small set of funerary structures attributed to the beginning of the Early Bronze Age was discovered atTruchtersheim “Holderacker” (2030-1900 BC), twelve kilometers to the northwest of Strasbourg. This find led us to review all theliterature available on the mortuary practices of the BzA1 in Alsace. This chronological horizon, until now poorly represented, wasrecently updated by a set of new discoveries, mostly from 2017 to 2019, via the rescue operations made on the route of the WesternBypass of Strasbourg. Though the modest regional corpus (twenty tombs) enables only observations of limited significance, several features specific to the period can be identified. Among these features, the variable orientations are distributed between a dominantNE-SW group, and a NW-SE group. The former group, also dominant in the Danube group in Bavaria, contains male and femaleindividuals deposited on their left site with the head oriented to the NE for the former, and on the right side with the head orientedto the SO for the latter. The second group of orientations contains only individuals deposited on the right side, with the head to theNW. In this group, we suggest that the female individuals are opposed to the male individuals not due to the principle of horizontalsymmetry that characterizes the NE-SW-oriented group, but due to a principle of vertical symmetry, a configuration that seems to beunique to the southern plain of the Upper Rhine. As at Truchtersheim, most of the rare artifacts are osseous ornaments, sometimesaccompanied by rare metal or earthenware objects. The composition of the deposits containing ubiquitous objects do not enable a formal identification of the networks connecting Alsace to the settlement sectors in southern and southwestern Germany. However,based on an analysis of the orientations and their evolution during the Early Bronze Age, and on other elements, such as the existencein Alsace of Tottenhütten structures and Eching/Öberau houses, we reiterate the hypothesis that there was a strong link between ourstudy region and the Danubian group of the Straubing culture. Finally, we underline the lack of regional data to characterize thetransition from the Bell Beaker Culture and the first signs of the Early Bronze Age between 2150 and 2000 BC, as they are representedin the Singen necropolises in the Bade, or the Remseck-Aldingen in the Neckar Valley., La mise au jour, en 2019, d’un petit ensemble funéraire attribué au début du Bronze ancien à Truchtersheim « Holderacker »(2030-1900 av. J.-C), à une douzaine de kilomètres au nord-ouest de Strasbourg, nous amène à proposer un point d’étape surl’ensemble de la documentation disponible sur les pratiques funéraires du BzA1 en Alsace. Cet horizon chronologique, jusqu’ici très peudocumenté, a récemment bénéficié d’une série de découvertes, essentiellement réalisées entre 2017 et 2019 à l’occasion des opérationsd’archéologie préventive conduites sur le tracé du Contournement Ouest de Strasbourg. Le corpus régional, modeste (vingt tombes),ne permet que des observations de portée limitée, mais plusieurs caractères spécifiques à la période peuvent être reconnus. Parmi eux,la variabilité des orientations, se partageant entre un groupe NE-SO, majoritaire, et un groupe NO-SE. Le premier, égalementmajoritaire dans le groupe du Danube, en Bavière, rassemble des individus masculins et féminins déposés sur le flanc gauche et tête auNE pour les premiers, et sur le flanc droit, tête au SO pour les seconds. Le second groupe d’orientations ne rassemble que des individusdéposés sur le flanc droit, tête au NO, dans lesquels nous proposons de reconnaître des individus féminins s’opposant aux individusmasculins non pas en vertu du principe de symétrie horizontale caractérisant le groupe des orientations NE-SO, mais en fonction d’un principe de symétrie verticale, configuration qui semble propre au sud de la plaine du Rhin supérieur. Les dépôts de mobilier sont rares,essentiellement constitués, comme à Truchtersheim, d’éléments de parures en matière dure animale, parfois accompagnés de rares objetsen métal ou en faïence. La composition des dépôts, rassemblant des objets ubiquistes, n’autorise pas l’identification formelle d’éventuelsréseaux connectant l’Alsace aux secteurs de peuplement d’Allemagne méridionale ou du sud-ouest. Cependant, en nous appuyant surl’analyse des orientations et sur leur évolution au cours du Bronze ancien, ainsi que sur d’autres éléments comme l’existence en Alsace destructures de type Tottenhütten et de maisons de type Eching/Öberau, nous réitérons l’hypothèse d’un lien privilégié entre notre régiond’étude et le groupe du Danube de la culture de Straubing. Enfin, nous soulignons le manque de données régionales qui caractérise lemoment du passage entre le Campaniforme et les premières manifestations du Bronze ancien entre 2150 et 2000 av. J.-C., telles qu’ellessont illustrées dans les proches nécropoles de Singen, dans le Bade, ou de Remseck-Aldingen, dans la vallée du Neckar.

Un nouveau fragment de statuette rubanée a récemment été découvert sur le site d’habitat de Rosheim. Il s’agit du second objet de ce type mis au jour sur cette localité. La statuette reposait, accompagnée des fragments d’un vase orné de boutons, au sein d’une couche scellée par un horizon de lœss rubéfié. Le fragment étudié est comparé à d’autres statuettes portant des décors similaires, découvertes en Thuringe et en Autriche. A new fragment of Lbk statuette has recently been discovered on the Rosheim site. It is the second object of that kind unearthed in that locality. The fragment was lying at the bottom of a pitch inside a layer just above a horizon of loess and surrounded by pieces of a vase of a particular type. The studied fragment is compared to other statuettes showing similar decoration patterns and found in Thuringia and Austria.

The Obernai ’Neuen Brunnen’ necropolis in Lower Alsace yielded 29 tombs attributed to the Middle Neolithic. It was probably founded during the Early Grossgartach, at the end of the 48th century BC, and abandoned during the Roessen, perhaps during the Early Roessen, and in any case before the middle of the 46th century BC. The most original feature of this mortuary assemblage is that most of the tombs belong to the Planig-Friedberg period (the last stylistic phase of the Grossgartach) and the Roessen. The mortuary practices of these periods are still poorly known in the region. The necropolis is composed of three spatial groups, the most ancient of which contains all the Grossgartach tombs and one Planig-Friedberg tomb. It is at this moment that a concentration of graves in a single limited space succeeds the distribution of tombs around three distinct locations, a phenomenon that has already been observed in three other regional assemblages. The integration of Obernai in the regional corpus and the detailed analysis of the mortuary practices highlights the permanence of this ritual since the Grossgartach, in terms of the positions and orientations of the corpses and reveals changes in the frequency and artifact deposit types : some categories, such as grinding stones/rubbing stones and sickle blades disappear, while most of the arrowheads and fire-making equipment increases. The relatively high number of individuals decorated with bracelets enabled us to determine how these elements, reserved for women, were worn during the Planig-Friedberg and Roessen periods: above the elbow and in symmetry, in opposition to the Grossgartach style. Another unique feature of the Obernai necropolis is that it yielded elements belonging to Upper Alsacian and Southern Badois groups (or ’south’ groups) of the Planig-Friedberg and Roessen, such as Forchheim-type Planig-Friedberg vases and their Roessen epigones, as well as irregular ring-discs. These traits, mixed with a majority of features defining the Lower Alsace groups (northern component of the Roessen ceramics, orientations to the west), permit us to equate the Obernai necropolis with a mixed assemblage in which two distinct traditions coexisted. This observation supports the conclusions of the ceramic analyses, which place the stylistic border between the northern and southern groups of the Roessen of the southern plain of the Upper Rhine at the location of Obernai., La nécropole d’Obernai ’Neuen Brunnen’, en Basse-Alsace, a livré 29 tombes attribuées au Néolithique moyen. Sa fondation intervient probablement dès le Grossgartach ancien, à la fin du 48e siècle av. J.-C. et son abandon dans le courant du Roessen, peut-être dès le Roessen ancien, dans tous les cas avant le milieu du 46e siècle. La plupart des tombes, et il s’agit de la principale originalité de cet ensemble funéraire, relèvent du Planig-Friedberg (dernier stade stylistique du Grossgartach) et du Roessen, périodes encore très peu documentées régionalement sur le plan des pratiques funéraires. La nécropole est formée de trois groupes spatiaux dont le plus ancien rassemble toutes les tombes Grossgartach et une tombe Planig-Friedberg. Les deux autres groupes sont fondés lors du Planig-Friedberg, mais un seul d’entre eux est encore utilisé lors du Roessen. C’est à ce moment-là que succède à la distribution des tombes autour de trois pôles distincts, une concentration des sépultures dans un même espace restreint, phénomène déjà documenté sur d’autres ensembles régionaux. L’intégration d’Obernai au sein du corpus régional et l’analyse détaillée des gestes funéraires permet de souligner la permanence du rituel depuis le Grossgartach, au niveau des positions et des orientations notamment, mais également de mettre en évidence une série d’évolutions touchant à la fréquence et aux types des dépôts de mobilier : certaines catégories comme les meules/molettes et les armatures de faucille disparaissent alors que la part des armatures de flèche et des nécessaires à feu s’accroît. Le nombre relativement élevé d’individus parés de bracelets nous a permis de définir la manière dont ces éléments, réservés aux femmes, étaient portés au Planig-Friedberg et au Roessen : au-dessus du coude et en symétrie, en rupture avec le style Grossgartach. Une autre originalité de la nécropole d’Obernai est d’avoir livré des éléments propres aux groupes haut-alsaciens et sud-badois (ou groupes ‘sud’) du Planig-Friedberg et du Roessen, à l’image des vases Planig-Friedberg de type Forchheim et de leurs épigones Roessen, ainsi que des anneaux-disques irréguliers. Ces traits, mêlés à une majorité de caractères définissant les groupes de Basse-Alsace (composante nord de la céramique Roessen, orientations à l’ouest), permettent d’assimiler la nécropole d’Obernai à un ensemble mixte où coexistent deux traditions distinctes. Cette observation rejoint les conclusions des études céramiques, qui placent la frontière stylistique entre les groupes nord et sud du Roessen du sud de la plaine du Rhin supérieur à hauteur d’Obernai.

Pottery is one of the most commonly recovered artefacts from archaeological sites. Despite more than a century of relative dating based on typology and seriation, accurate dating of pottery by the radiocarbon method has proven extremely challenging due to the limited survival of organic temper and unreliability of visible residues. We report here a new method of dating directly archaeological pottery based on accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis of 14C in absorbed food residues: palmitic (C16:0) and stearic (C18:0) fatty acids purified by preparative gas chromatography (pcGC). We present the first accurate compound-specific radiocarbon determinations of lipids extracted from pottery vessels, which were rigorously evaluated by comparison with dendrochronological dates and inclusion in site and regional chronologies containing suites of radiocarbon dates on other materials . Critically, the compound-specific dates from each of the C16:0 and C18:0 fatty acids in pottery vessels provide an internal quality control of the results and, are entirely compatible with dates for other commonly dated materials. Accurate radiocarbon dating of pottery vessels can reveal: (i) the period of use of pottery; (ii) the antiquity of organic residues including when specific foodstuffs were exploited; (iii) sites chronologies in the absence of traditionally datable materials and (iv) direct verification of pottery typochronologies. As exemplars, the method was applied to the dating of dairy and carcass product exploitation in Neolithic vessels, from Britain, Anatolia, central and western Europe, and Saharan Africa.

La fouille de Berstett Langenberg a permis la mise au jour, sur une surface de près de 2 ha, de plusieurs occupations successives, dont les datations s’échelonnent du Néolithique récent à La Tène finale, ainsi que quelques structures agricoles contemporaines.Deux pôles distincts du Néolithique récent ont été fouillés : au nord-est, une dizaine de fosses trahit une occupation du Michelsberg. L’ensemble des phases de cette période sont représentées. À une centaine de mètres à l’ouest, une douzaine de silos ont livré du mobilier Munzingen. Un dépôt de trois porcelets a été mis au jour dans l’une de ces fosses. Enfin, deux autres structures ont été rattachées au Néolithique sur la foi de datations radiocarbones : l’inhumation d’un immature accompagné de perles et d’une pendeloque d’une part et un silo contenant le squelette d’un très jeune enfant, mort au moment de sa naissance.L’occupation de l’âge du Bronze moyen est beaucoup plus étendue, elle couvre la quasi-totalité des surfaces décapées. Elle est caractérisée par une cinquantaine de silos et autres fosses, répartis sans organisation apparente. Le mobilier céramique est assez abondant ; il permettrait de préciser la chronologie de cette phase de l’âge du Bronze.Les structures de l’âge du Fer sont beaucoup moins nombreuses. Une fosse est datée du Hallstatt D et un silo de la transition entre la Tène ancienne et La Tène moyenne. Cette dernière contenait un ensemble de dépôts de corps humains (deux jeunes hommes adultes) et animaux (un chien, une jument et un chiot). Le seul mobilier associé était une fibule en fer. Enfin, quatre tronçons de fossé dessinent l’angle d’un enclos qui peut être attribué au débute de La Tène finale par le maigre mobilier qui y a été découvert.Les derniers témoins d’occupation des parcelles fouillées sont des structures agricoles contemporaines, silos à betteraves ou ancrages destinés à haubaner une houblonnière ou un séchoir à maïs.

The recent discovery of seven Neolithic sites in the Alsace Plain with “Rosheim” enclosures has renewed the interpretation of these extensive complexes dated to the 5th millennium BC. This very particular type of enclosure, whose eponymous site is located about twenty kilometres from Strasbourg, is made up of discontinuous ditches, following a pre-established layout, which are progressively filled in. New analysis of these monuments is accompanied by a reflection on their function (ceremonial or defensive), enabling us to provide a coherent account of the origin and important geographical extension of these enclosures, which are found in numerous cultural groups over more than two millennia of European history, from Poland to England and from Bavaria to Denmark., La découverte récente, dans la plaine d’Alsace, de sept sites néolithiques à enceintes dites de type « Rosheim » a renouvelé l’interprétation de ces vastes ensembles datés du Ve millénaire avant notre ère. Bei den Ausgrabungen auf dem Fundplatz Lampertheim « Strendfeld » wurden fünfzehn Befunde aus der Zeit zwischen 4000 und 3700 v. Chr. aufgedeckt. Trotz des schlechten Erhaltungszustandes der Befunde aufgrund intensiver Erosion zieht der Fundplatz sein Interesse aus dem relativ umfangreichen und typologisch vielseitigen Keramikensemble, welches alle im Unterelsass bekannten jungneolithischen Etappen aufweist zwischen dem Beginn von Michelsberg (um 4050 v. Chr.), in dem die späte mittelneolithische Keramikproduktion noch vertreten ist, bis zum Auftauchen von Munzingen B, welches die Michelsberger Kultur nach 3800 v. Chr. ablöst., Le site de Lampertheim « Strendfeld » a livré quinze structures datées entre 4000 et 3700 avant J.-C. Leur état de conservation est relativement médiocre, l’érosion ayant été particulièrement active. L’intérêt du site réside donc surtout dans la série de poteries relativement étoffée et typologiquement diversifiée. Il n’est certes pas comparable aux plus importants ensembles du Néolithique récent régional, mais cette collection illustre toutes les étapes reconnues en Basse-Alsace entre les débuts du Michelsberg (vers 4050 avant J.-C.), où les productions de la fin du Néolithique moyen sont encore présentes, et l’émergence du Munzingen B qui remplace la culture de Michelsberg après 3800 avant J.-C.

La fouille conduite par l’Inrap entre 2008 et 2009 sur la commune d’Entzheim a permis d’étudier un vaste habitat rubané occupé de l’étape ancienne à la fin de l’étape récente. Sur les cinq hectares probablement couverts par le village du Néolithique ancien, seuls trois ont été décapés. Les résultats obtenus sur les secteurs les plus densément occupés viennent très utilement compléter les données acquises il y a plus d’une décennie sur l’habitat de Bischoffsheim. Les vingt-trois maisons identifiées à Entzheim relèvent des trois types définis par P.-J.-R. Modderman. L’analyse architecturale, d’un apport limité, permet néanmoins de confirmer certaines observations, comme la tendance, déjà décrite, à l’accroissement régulier de la largeur des bâtiments au cours du temps. La relative abondance du matériel céramique issu des fosses latérales nous a permis, par le biais d’une nouvelle analyse factorielle des correspondances, de proposer une attribution stylistique précise pour la majorité des édifices. Nous avons pu appliquer à Entzheim le modèle d’organisation spatiale récemment défini à Bischoffsheim ; les résultats obtenus renforcent l’hypothèse d’une implantation des maisons à l’intérieur d’un système orthonormé (quadrillage de l’espace). À l’heure où l’ancien modèle du « Hofplatz » essuie de vives critiques, notamment après la publication du « modèle d’implantation en rangées » d’O. Rück, nous nous sommes particulièrement attachés à inscrire notre modèle (qui retient le même principe d’un cycle construction/abandon que le « Hofplatz » et qui insiste sur l’importance fondamentale de la chronologie) dans un historique des recherches détaillé.Ce site rubané se distingue par le nombre élevé des inhumations en habitat. Quinze d’entre elles, pour la plupart attribuées à l’étape récente évoluée du Rubané, ont été mises au jour. L’augmentation du corpus des tombes en habitat, qui a bénéficié des découvertes réalisées aux « Terres de la Chapelle » et sur le site voisin d’Entzheim-Geispolsheim, a autorisé une nouvelle approche de ce type de structure. Les résultats obtenus mettent en évidence un recrutement basé sur une sélection préférentielle d’individus jeunes (à l’exception des moins de 1 an), qui offre une image contrastant fortement avec la courbe obtenue sur la grande nécropole de Vendenheim.L’abondant mobilier recueilli n’offre guère de caractères originaux. Les conclusions de l’étude exhaustive de la faune méritent d’être soulignées, en particulier la mise en évidence d’une étape de découpe des carcasses de bœufs qui se déroulerait dans des aires de débitage spécialisées au sein des villages, ou d’un abattage et d’une découpe des carcasses intervenant hors des habitats. The excavation conducted by Inrap in 2008-2009 in the commune of Entzheim permitted the study of a large Linear Pottery Culture (LBK) settlement occupied from the early phase to the end of the late phase. The results obtained in the most densely occupied sectors complement the data collected more than ten years ago at the Bischoffsheim settlement. The twenty-three houses identified at Entzheim correspond to the three types defined by P.-J.-R. Modderman. Though the architectural analysis provided limited information, it nonetheless confirmed some observations, such as the trend, already reported, of a regular increase in the width of the buildings through time. A correspondence analysis of the relatively abundant pottery remains originating from lateral pits enabled us to propose a precise stylistic attribution for most of the buildings. We were able to apply to Entzheim the spatial organization model recently defined at Bischoffsheim, and the results obtained support the hypothesis that the houses were built according to an orthonormal system (gridded space). At a time when the “Hofplatz” model is subject to vehement criticism, especially following the publication of the “row settlement model” by O. Rück, we were particularly motivated to integrate our model (which retains the same principle of a construction/abandonment cycle as the “Hofplatz” model, and which insists on the fundamental importance of chronology) into a detailed history of research.This LBK site is distinguished by its high number of inhumations within a settlement. Fifteen of them, most attributed to the late evolved phase of the LBK, were uncovered. The augmentation of the corpus of tombs in settlements, which benefited from discoveries made at “Terres de Chapelle”, and the neighboring site of Entzheim-Geispolsheim, enabled a new approach to this type of feature. The results obtained show a preferential selection of young individuals (except for the less than 1-year-old category), which strongly contrasts with the curve obtained for the large Vendenheim necropolis.The abundant artifacts have few original characteristics. The conclusions of the exhaustive study of the fauna merit attention, especially the identification of a butchery phase of beef carcasses that occurred in specialized zones within the villages, and of the slaughtering and butchery of carcasses outside of the settlements. Von den fünf Hektar, die das frühneolithische Dorf bedeckt haben dürfte, wurden nur drei Hektar abgetragen. Die Ergebnisse der am dichtesten besiedelten Bereiche ergänzen die Daten, die vor über einem Jahrzehnt in der neolithischen Siedlung von Bischoffsheim gesammelt wurden. Die 23 Hausbauten von Entzheim lassen sich in die drei von P.-J.-R. Modderman definierten Typen einordnen. Obwohl die Bauanalyse sich als wenig relevant erwies, bestätigen die Ergebnisse bestimmte Beobachtungen, wie die bereits beschriebene Tendenz einer im Laufe der Zeit zunehmenden Breite der Gebäude. Dank einer neuen faktoriellen Korrespondenzanalyse der relativ großen Mengen an Keramik aus den Längsgruben konnten die meisten Gebäude stilistisch präzise eingeordnet werden. In Entzheim konnte das kürzlich in Bischoffsheim definierte Modell der räumlichen Organisation angewandt werden, dessen Ergebnisse die Hypothese stärken, dass die Häuser in ein orthogonal normiertes System (rasterartige Bebauungsstruktur) eingegliedert waren. Heute und insbesondere seit der Veröffentlichung des „Häuserzeilenmodells“ von Oliver Rück ist das alte Hofplatz-Modell heftiger Kritik ausgesetzt. Wir haben uns besonders bemüht, unser Modell (das wie der „Hofplatz“ dem Prinzip eines Zyklus von Bau/Aufgabe folgt, und die zentrale Rolle der Chronologie betont) in den forschungsgeschichtlichen Prozess einzugliedern.Dieser bandkeramische Fundplatz zeichnet sich durch die hohe Zahl von Siedlungsbestattungen aus. Fünfzehn von ihnen wurden freigelegt und mehrheitlich der entwickelten Phase der jüngeren Bandkeramik zugeordnet. Die Ausgrabungen an den Fundstätten Entzheim Terres de la Chapelle und Entzheim-Geispolsheim haben das Korpus von Siedlungsbestattungen wesentlich bereichert und so einen neuen Ansatz für die Erforschung dieses Befundtyps ermöglicht. Aus den Ergebnissen geht hervor, dass es sich bei den Toten (abgesehen von den Individuen unter 1 Jahr) überwiegend um junge Individuen handelt. Diese Altersverteilung steht im Gegensatz zu der Statistik der großen Nekropole von Vendenheim.Das umfangreiche Fundmaterial weist nur wenige originelle Eigenschaften auf. Die Ergebnisse der erschöpfenden Studie der Fauna verdienen es betont zu werden, insbesondere der Nachweis von Bereichen innerhalb der Dörfer, die der Zerlegung von Rindern vorbehalten waren oder der Nachweis einer Tötung und Zerlegung des Schlachtviehs außerhalb der Wohnbereiche

Session XXXI-2. Ancient DNA; International audience; In recent years the expansion of early farmers from the Near East across Europe has been investigated in greater detail using genomic data. Incoming farmer groups have been shown to have a clear Near Eastern/Anatolian cultural and genetic background with only limited biological contact with autochthonous hunter-gatherers for at least two millennia, despite considerable evidence of mutual material exchange. The contribution of hunter-gatherer ancestry is very low in Central and Southeastern Europe, whereas early farmers from the Iberian Peninsula showed generally higher genetic contribution, albeit with regional variations. Other parts of western Europe, in particular modern-day France, are less well-studied despite the fact that this region archaeologically displays a complex mosaic pattern of interaction with late Mesolithic hunter-gatherer societies. Here, archaeological research also attests the convergence/overlap of two main routes (Danubian and Mediterranean) of the Neolithic expansion of early farmers. Despite this crucial geographic position in the process of Europe’s Neolithisation, thus far only mitochondrial DNA studies have explored the underlying biology of these interactions. Analyses of maternal lineages of 7000-year-old farmers from northern France suggest equivalent contributions of maternal lineages from farmer groups associated with both expansion routes to local gene pools, as well as a higher proportion of hunter-gatherer lineages than described for regions in Central or Southern Europe.As part of a joint collaboration between French and German teams, we will generate the first detailed genomic data from Western European individuals. We will analyse a wide variety of geographical and cultural contexts, from the 7th to the 4th millennium BCE, and will investigate whether the archaeologically derived entities also represent genetically homogenous clusters. Through a solid contextualisation with archaeological data, this will allow us to shed light on cultural/biological contacts, modes of exchange, and to carry out demographic modelling. Here, we will present our project outline and preliminary data investigating the complexity and variability in cultural and biological interactions between human groups during the Neolithic period in Western Europe.

Les travaux en cours sur l’habitat du Néolithique ancien en Alsace, un des axes de recherche du groupe Préhistoire de l’UMR 7044 (Université de Strasbourg), apportent régulièrement de nouveaux éléments de réflexion sur la chronologie des implantations, l’organisation spatiale des villages et l’architecture des bâtiments. Cette contribution propose un état des lieux sur les caractères architecturaux qui définissent les deux groupes régionaux occupant la plaine d’Alsace et tente une première mise en perspective des données dans un cadre élargi aux groupes de peuplements voisins. Les premiers résultats obtenus confirment l’existence de deux traditions régionales participant de réseaux distincts : sont ainsi soulignés les liens existants entre la Haute-Alsace et les régions du Rubané du Sud-Ouest (RSO), ainsi que les caractères communs à la Basse-Alsace et aux provinces du Rubané du Nord-Ouest (RNO). L’analyse des différences et des caractères partagés, parfois notés de longue date, permettra, à l’issue de ce programme de recherche, d’esquisser une carte des provinces architecturales du Rubané occidental.

L’habitat Néolithique récent d’Entzheim « Les Terres de la Chapelle » (cultures de Michelsberg et de Munzingen), fouillé en 2008-2009, a livré les restes en connexion anatomique d’un renard roux reposant sur le fond d’une fosse de plan circulaire. L’animal, installé en position du repos, était accompagné d’un grand fragment de gobelet et de fragments osseux d’un fémur et d’un tibia de jeune bovin. La date radiocarbone réalisée sur os confirme l’attribution à la culture de Munzingen (3783-3695 cal. BC à 1 σ). Nous proposons d’analyser ce dépôt selon deux hypothèses : celle du dépôt d’offrande et celle de la sépulture animale. Les nombreux dépôts d’animaux entiers réalisés en Alsace au cours du 4e millénaire impliquent essentiellement des espèces domestiques et familières (bœuf, porc, ovicaprinés et chien) ou sauvages (jeunes cervidés peut-être apprivoisés et lièvres). Le renard n’apparaissant pas dans le spectre des animaux consommés au Néolithique récent, la thèse du dépôt d’offrande est difficile à argumenter. Nous privilégions, en nous appuyant sur l’existence de sépultures de chiens au Mésolithique et au Néolithique, l’hypothèse d’une véritable sépulture animale. Il pourrait s’agir, à l’image des quelques carnivores proche-orientaux retrouvés en contextes funéraires (renard et chat sauvage), d’un animal apprivoisé bénéficiant d’un traitement particulier résultant de sa familiarité avec l’homme. The anatomically connected skeleton of a red fox was found at the bottom of a circular ditch during the 2008-2009 excavation of the recent Neolithic settlement of Entzheim "Les Terres de la Chapelle" (Michelsberg and Munzingen cultures). The animal was placed in a sleeping position and buried with a large sherd from a pottery goblet and bone fragments belonging to the femur and tibia of a young bovine. The radiocarbon analysis dates the bones to the Munzingen Culture (3783-3695 cal. BC at 1 σ). Two hypotheses have been proposed for this deposit: an offering or a burial? Many deposits of whole animal carcasses dating to the 4th millennium BC have been found in Alsace, mainly of domestic species (beef, pork, caprines and dog) or wild species (perhaps tamed young deer and hares). The fox is not one of the species consumed in the Recent Neolithic and the hypothesis of the deposit being an offering does not seem plausible. However, burials of dogs have been observed for the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods and the Entzeheim deposit could fall within this same category. A few comparisons of carnivores found in funerary contexts are known of in the Near East (fox and wild cat), probably tamed animals that benefitted from this special treatment due to their proximity with people. In der 2008-2009 ausgegrabenen jungneolithischen Siedlung von Entzheim „Les Terres de la Chapelle“ (Michelsberg und Munzingen) wurden auf dem Boden einer kreisförmigen Grube die anatomisch zusammenhängenden Reste eines Rotfuchses gefunden. Das in Ruhestellung niedergelegte Tier war von einem großen Becherfragment und Teilen eines Oberschenkelknochens und eines Schienbeins von einem jungen Rind begleitet. Die Radiokarbondaten der Knochen bestätigen die Zuordnung zu Munzingen ( (3783-3695 cal. BC 1 σ). Wir schlagen für die Deponierung zwei Hypothesen vor: Die eines Weihedepots und die einer Tierbestattung. Bei den zahlreichen Deponierungen von ganzen Tieren, die im Elsass im 4. Jahrtausend bezeugt sind, handelt es sich überwiegend um Haustiere, wohl bekannte Tierarten (Rind, Schwein, Schaf/Ziege und Hund) oder Wildtiere (junge, möglicherweise zahme Hirsche und Hasen). Da der Fuchs nicht zu den Tieren zählt, die im Jungneolithikum verzehrt wurden, sprechen nur wenige Argumente für die These des Weihedepots. Wir ziehen die Hypothese einer echten Tierbestattung vor und stützen uns dabei auf Hundebestattungen, die im Mesolithikum und im Neolithikum bezeugt sind. Es könnte sich wie bei einigen Carnivoren (Fuchs und Wildkatze) aus Grabkontexten im Vorderen Orient um ein zahmes Tier handeln, das bestattet worden war, weil es dem Menschen nahestand.

In Europe, the Middle Neolithic is characterized by an important diversification of cultures. In northeastern France, the appearance of the Michelsberg culture has been correlated with major cultural changes and interpreted as the result of the settlement of new groups originating from the Paris Basin. This cultural transition has been accompanied by the expansion of particular funerary practices involving inhumations within circular pits and individuals in "non-conventional" positions (deposited in the pits without any particular treatment). If the status of such individuals has been highly debated, the sacrifice hypothesis has been retained for the site of Gougenheim (Alsace). At the regional level, the analysis of the Gougenheim mitochondrial gene pool (SNPs and HVR-I sequence analyses) permitted us to highlight a major genetic break associated with the emergence of the Michelsberg in the region. This genetic discontinuity appeared to be linked to new affinities with farmers from the Paris Basin, correlated to a noticeable hunter-gatherer legacy. All of the evidence gathered supports (i) the occidental origin of the Michelsberg groups and (ii) the potential implication of this migration in the progression of the hunter-gatherer legacy from the Paris Basin to Alsace / Western Germany at the beginning of the Late Neolithic. At the local level, we noted some differences in the maternal gene pool of individuals in "conventional" vs. "non-conventional" positions. The relative genetic isolation of these sub-groups nicely echoes both their social distinction and the hypothesis of sacrifices retained for the site. Our investigation demonstrates that a multi-scale aDNA study of ancient communities offers a unique opportunity to disentangle the complex relationships between cultural and biological evolution.

Starting from questions about the nature of cultural diversity, this paper examines the pace and tempo of change and the relative importance of continuity and discontinuity. To unravel the cultural project of the past, we apply chronological modelling of radiocarbon dates within a Bayesian statistical framework, to interrogate the Neolithic cultural sequence in Lower Alsace, in the upper Rhine valley, in broad terms from the later sixth to the end of the fifth millennium cal BC. Detailed formal estimates are provided for the long succession of cultural groups, from the early Neolithic Linear Pottery culture (LBK) to the Bischheim Occidental du Rhin Supérieur (BORS) groups at the end of the Middle Neolithic, using seriation and typology of pottery as the starting point in modelling. The rate of ceramic change, as well as frequent shifts in the nature, location and density of settlements, are documented in detail, down to lifetime and generational timescales. This reveals a Neolithic world in Lower Alsace busy with comings and goings, tinkerings and adjustments, and relocations and realignments. A significant hiatus is identified between the end of the LBK and the start of the Hinkelstein group, in the early part of the fifth millennium cal BC. On the basis of modelling of existing dates for other parts of the Rhineland, this appears to be a wider phenomenon, and possible explanations are discussed; full reoccupation of the landscape is only seen in the Grossgartach phase. Radical shifts are also proposed at the end of the Middle Neolithic.

La fouille a permis de mettre au jour sept occupations différentes.La première occupation est représentée par de grandes fosses, possiblement des fosses d’extraction, attribuées à la culture Grossgartach du Néolithique moyen, datée aux alentours de -4800/-4700. Elle se trouve dans une partie basse de la surface décapée, à l’extrémité orientale de la zone. La deuxième occupation intervient quelques siècles plus tard, par la fondation du fossé attribué à la culture dite Bischheim rhénan (Roessen III). L’une des fosses du site, ainsi que plusieurs autres fosses découvertes lors de l’opération conjointe sur la zone du stock sud (opération dirigée par Philippe Lefranc)ager du sont attribuées au Bruebach- Oberbergen, que l’on peut situer entre -4600/4550 et -4350/4300 av. J.-C. Une structure du Néolithique récent, correspondant à la fin du IVe millénaire av. J.-C., isolée, peut être mise en relation avec un site de la même période qui se développe sur la zone du stock sud.Les vestiges de l’âge du Bronze, moins de 5 fosses, sont attribués à la fin du Bronze ancien/début Bronze moyen, soit aux alentours de 1600 av. J.-C.Le site n’est réoccupé qu’au début du second âge du Fer (la Tène ancienne, entre 450 et 250 av. J.-C.) avec l’installation d’une série de fosses et silos. Bien qu’un des silos contenant les restes de plusieurs animaux soit attribuable, par une datation 14 C à La Tène moyenne, on ignore s’il y a continuité exacte avec la dernière implantation attribuée à la fin du second âge du Fer (La Tène finale, entre 150 et 30- 25 av. J.-C.). Il s’agit d’un large fossé en agrafe, de cabanes semi-enterrées et de quelques fosses.
