Obesity is caused by a prolonged positive energy balance1,2. Whether reduced energy expenditure stemming from reduced activity levels contributes is debated3,4. Here we show that in both sexes, total energy expenditure (TEE) adjusted for body composition and age declined since the late 1980s, while adjusted activity energy expenditure increased over time. We use the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labelled Water database on energy expenditure of adults in the United States and Europe (n = 4,799) to explore patterns in total (TEE: n = 4,799), basal (BEE: n = 1,432) and physical activity energy expenditure (n = 1,432) over time. In males, adjusted BEE decreased significantly, but in females this did not reach significance. A larger dataset of basal metabolic rate (equivalent to BEE) measurements of 9,912 adults across 163 studies spanning 100 years replicates the decline in BEE in both sexes. We conclude that increasing obesity in the United States/Europe has probably not been fuelled by reduced physical activity leading to lowered TEE. We identify here a decline in adjusted BEE as a previously unrecognized factor.

BACKGROUND: When a lifestyle intervention combines caloric restriction and increased physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE), there are two components of energy balance, energy intake (EI) and physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE), that are routinely misreported and expensive to measure. Energy balance models have successfully predicted EI if PAEE is known. Estimating EI from an energy balance model when PAEE is not known remains an open question. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate the performance of an energy balance differential equation model to predict EI in an intervention that includes both calorie restriction and increases in PAEE. DESIGN: The Antonetti energy balance model that predicts body weight trajectories during weight loss was solved and inverted to estimate EI during weight loss. Using data from a calorie restriction study that included interventions with and without prescribed PAEE, we tested the validity of the Antonetti weight predictions against measured weight and the Antonetti EI model against measured EI using the intake-balance method at 168 days. We then evaluated the predicted EI from the model against measured EI in a study that prescribed both calorie restriction and increased PAEE. RESULTS: Compared with measured body weight at 168 days, the mean (±SD) model error was 1.30 ± 3.58 kg. Compared with measured EI at 168 days, the mean EI (±SD) model error in the intervention that prescribed calorie restriction and did not prescribe increased PAEE, was −84.9 ± 227.4 kcal/d. In the intervention that prescribed calorie restriction combined with increased PAEE, the mean (±SD) EI model error was −155.70±205.70 kcal/d. CONCLUSION: The validity of the newly developed EI model was supported by experimental observations and can be used to determine EI during weight loss.

Physical activity during pregnancy is an important health behavior. However, many pregnant individuals are provided with little-to-no guidance to adequately engage in physical activity. The purpose of this quantitative and quasi-qualitative study of currently or previously pregnant women was to examine physical activity behaviors in pregnancy and understand barriers and facilitators to achieving physical activity recommendations. Overall, 431 women (18+ years), White/Caucasian (84.5%), married (84.9%), and currently pregnant (66.6%), completed an online survey study. Most women (69.4%) reported engaging in cardio-based physical activity and willing to engage in physical activity to meet guidelines between 2 and 5 days per week (77.4 –88.8%). The most frequently reported barriers were feeling too tired (72.8%) or uncomfortable (71.8%) and childcare needs (57.8%). Being able to choose time of day (96.0%), accessing home workouts (92.9%), and having a personalized prescription (95.6%) were the most reported facilitators. Open comment feedback resulted in additional barriers, such as ensuring proper energy intake, while motivation and support from other pregnant individuals were fundamental facilitators. Individualized physical activity prescription is lacking in routine prenatal care. To support pregnant individuals to achieve physical activity recommendations, developing a prescription with suitable modalities, at-home options, and consideration for physical activity timing are required.

Circadian misalignment, as occurs in shiftwork, is associated with numerous negative health outcomes. Here, we sought to improve data labeling accuracy from wearable technology using a novel data pre-processing algorithm in 27 police trainees during shiftwork. Secondarily, we explored changes in four metabolic salivary biomarkers of circadian rhythm during shiftwork. Using a two-group observational study design, participants completed in-class training during dayshift for 6 weeks followed by either dayshift or nightshift field-training for 6 weeks. Using our novel algorithm, we imputed labels of circadian misaligned sleep episodes that occurred during daytime, which were previously were mislabeled as non-sleep by Garmin, supported by algorithm performance analysis. We next assessed changes to resting heart rate and sleep regularity index during dayshift versus nightshift field-training. We also examined changes in field-based assessments of salivary cortisol, uric acid, testosterone, and melatonin during dayshift versus nightshift. Compared to dayshift, nightshift workers experienced larger changes to resting heart rate, sleep regularity index (indicating reduced sleep regularity), and alterations in sleep/wake activity patterns accompanied by blunted salivary cortisol. Salivary uric acid and testosterone did not change. These findings show wearable technology combined with specialized data pre-processing can be used to monitor changes in behavioral patterns during shiftwork.

Objectives A qualitative study was performed to characterize experiences of women going through menopause, as well as to identify barriers and facilitators for participating in a lifestyle program targeting weight management during menopause. Study Design Perimenopausal and postmenopausal Black women with a self-reported desire to lose or maintain weight during menopause participated in a total of six focus groups. Main Outcome Measures Women were asked about their past experiences with diet, exercise, and weight management; their menopause experiences; as well as specific components and considerations for developing a lifestyle program for weight management. Thematic analysis was conducted on coded transcripts and four main themes emerged, each containing three to seven subthemes. Results Twenty-seven Black women (age 54±4 years, BMI 35.1 ± 9.0 kg/m2) were enrolled. Overall, women felt unprepared for the changes they experienced during menopause and had difficulty maintaining or losing weight. While women were receptive to trying different diets and exercises, they wanted a diet that was flexible with their lifestyle and exercises that considered their existing health status. Women were also interested in learning about menopause alongside other women, stating that medical professionals did not provide them with adequate information or help. Social support, accountability, and seeing results were perceived critical to achieve long-lasting behavioral change. Conclusions Women were interested in receiving menopause information and improving their overall health as part of a lifestyle program during menopause. Associating with other women affected by menopause will allow for the creation of more sustainable lifestyle programs during menopause. Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT04487782.

BACKGROUND: The maternal metabolic milieu is challenged during pregnancy and may result in unwarranted metabolic complications. A time-restricted eating (TRE) pattern may optimize the metabolic response to pregnancy by improving glucose metabolism and reducing circulating glucose concentrations, as it does in nonpregnant individuals. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to 1) assess eating timing in pregnant women; 2) understand the perceptions of adopting a TRE pattern; 3) determine the barriers and support mechanisms for incorporating a TRE pattern; and 4) identify those most willing to adopt a TRE pattern during pregnancy. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional quantitative and quasi-qualitative online survey study for women who were pregnant at the time of study completion or had given birth in the prior 2 years. Group analyses were performed based off willingness to try a TRE pattern using chi-squared analyses, independent samples t-tests, or an analysis of variance. Three separate reviewers reviewed qualitative responses. RESULTS: A total of 431 women (BMI, 27.5 ± 0.3 kg/m(2)) completed the study. Of the participating women, 23.7% reported willingness to try a TRE pattern during pregnancy. Top barriers to adopting a TRE pattern during pregnancy were concerns for 1) safety; 2) nausea; and 3) hunger. The highest ranked support mechanisms were: 1) the ability to choose the eating window; 2) more frequent prenatal visits to ensure the health of the baby; and 3) receiving feedback from a dietician/nutritionist. Women who did not identify as White/Caucasian expressed a higher willingness to try a TRE pattern during pregnancy (P = 0.01). Women who were nulliparous expressed a higher willingness to try a TRE pattern (P = 0.05). DISCUSSION: TRE, an alternative dietary strategy shown to optimize metabolic control, may be effective to prevent and manage pregnancy-related metabolic impairments. To create an effective TRE intervention during pregnancy, the input of pregnant mothers is necessary to increase adherence and acceptability.

OBJECTIVE: The role of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in infant metabolism remains poorly understood, primarily because of the inherent limitation of positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging to measure BAT, which is not suitable for infants. The aims of this method development study were to assess the feasibility, intra-rater reliability, interscan repeatability, and physiological relevance of measuring BAT in infants using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: A total of 10 nonsedated infants (mean age, 22.6 [1.3] days old) completed two 3-T MRI exams using chemical-shift-encoded water-fat scans 6.2 (2.8) days apart. Candidate BAT voxels in the supraclavicular region were identified based on fat signal fraction (FSF). The volumes of BAT depots were manually traced, and FSF was calculated. Whole-body fat mass was determined using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: Images were successfully obtained from 19 of 20 (95%) attempted scans. The mean BAT volume was 5.41 (SD 1.1) cm(3), and the mean FSF was 16.41% (SD 3.3%). Intra-rater analysis showed good reliability with no systemic bias (proportional bias for volume: p = 0.19; FSF: p = 0.30). Test-retest for interscan repeatability was good (intraclass correlation coefficients for volume: 0.92, p = 0.001 and intraclass correlation coefficients for FSF: 0.93, p < 0.001). FSF was inversely related to fat-free mass (r = −0.69, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: This method development study supports the use of MRI to obtain reliable and quantitative measurements of BAT volume in infants.

Background In the United States (US), the incidence and severity of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths are higher in Black compared to White residents. Systemic inequities and differences in health behaviors may contribute to disparities in COVID-19 health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders on changes in health behaviors and anxiety in Black and White adults residing in the US. Methods Beginning April 2020, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center COVID-19 Health Behaviors Study collected information on changes to employment, income, diet, physical activity, anxiety, and sleep patterns through a global online survey. Results Of 4542 survey respondents in the US, 7% identified as Black and 93% as White. Prior to the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, a greater proportion of Blacks compared to Whites reported earning

Lower ambient temperature (Ta) requires greater energy expenditure to sustain body temperature. However, effects of Ta on human energetics may be buffered by environmental modification and behavioral compensation. We used the IAEA DLW database for adults in the USA (n = 3213) to determine the effect of Ta (−10 to +30°C) on TEE, basal (BEE) and activity energy expenditure (AEE) and physical activity level (PAL). There were no significant relationships (p > 0.05) between maximum, minimum and average Ta and TEE, BEE, AEE and PAL. After adjustment for fat-free mass, fat mass and age, statistically significant (p < 0.01) relationships between TEE, BEE and Ta emerged in females but the effect sizes were not biologically meaningful. Temperatures inside buildings are regulated at 18–25°C independent of latitude. Hence, adults in the US modify their environments to keep TEE constant across a wide range of external ambient temperatures.

Background:\ud The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE™) phase 2 trial tested the effects of two years of 25% calorie restriction (CR) on aging in humans. CALERIE 2 was one of the first studies to use a graph of predicted weight loss to: 1) provide a proxy of dietary adherence, and 2) promote dietary adherence. Assuming 25% CR, each participant's weight over time was predicted, with upper and lower bounds around predicted weights. Thus, the resulting weight graph included a zone or range of body weights that reflected adherence to 25% CR, and this was named the zone of adherence. Participants were considered adherent if their weight was in this zone. It is unlikely, however, that the entire zone reflects 25% CR.\ud \ud Objectives:\ud To determine the level of CR associated with the zone of adherence and if the level of CR achieved by participants was within the zone.\ud \ud Methods:\ud Percent CR associated with the upper and lower bounds of the zone were determined via the Body Weight Planner (https://www.niddk.nih.gov/bwp) for participants in the CALERIE 2 CR group (N = 143). Percent CR achieved by participants was estimated with the intake-balance method.\ud \ud Results:\ud At month 24, the zone of adherence ranged from 10.4(0.0)% to 19.4(0.0)% CR [Mean(SEM)], and participants achieved 11.9(0.7)% CR and were in the zone.\ud \ud Conclusion:\ud The results highlight the challenges of: 1) setting a single CR goal vs. a range of acceptable values, and 2) obtaining real-time and valid measures of CR adherence to facilitate adherence.

INTRODUCTION: Changes to mental, physical, and physiological functions drive the complex processes underlying the variable progression of human aging. Nutritional interventions are one of the most promising non-pharmacological therapeutics to attenuate aging in humans. This narrative review aims to describe the implications of moderate and prolonged calorie restriction (CR) in healthy adults without obesity that occur beyond weight loss. AREAS COVERED: Findings from CR studies, such as the CALERIE (Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy) trials, the most rigorous trials to date examining a prolonged 25% CR, are described. The main areas covered include; changes to anthropometrics, energy metabolism, cardiometabolic health, inflammation and immune function, physical fitness, health behaviors, and mental health in response to weight loss (1-year) and weight loss maintenance (2-year). EXPERT OPINION: CR presents a novel and effective therapeutic approach for improving healthspan and biomarkers of lifespan. To date, scientific evidence suggests that continued CR, under medical supervision, is accompanied with persistent and beneficial effects on health outcomes independent of weight loss. Mechanisms are yet to be fully elucidated, and novel dietary approaches that may similarly attenuate aging-related conditions should be explored and compared to traditional CR.

There is a lack of cost-effective and readily available access to evidence-based information to manage healthy behaviours for pregnant individuals. Mobile health (mHealth) tools offer a cost-effective, interactive, personalized option that can be delivered anywhere at a time most convenient for the user. This study protocol was primarily developed to i) assess the feasibility of the SmartMoms Canada intervention in supporting participants to achieve gestational weight gain (GWG) guidelines. The secondary objectives are to: ii) assess user experience with the app, measured by adherence to the program via app software metrics and frequency of use; iii) determine the impact of SmartMoms Canada app usage on the adoption of healthful behaviours related to nutrition, physical activity and sleep habits, improvements in health-related quality of life, pregnancy-related complications, and symptoms of depression, and iv) investigate the potential extended effects of the app on postpartum health-related outcomes.This is a feasibility trial. Pregnant individuals aged 18-40 years with pre-gravid body mass index between 18.5 and 39.9 kg/mSmartMoms Canada is the first bilingual Canadian-centric app designed for pregnant people. This mHealth intervention, with its ability to supply frequent interactions, provides pregnancy- related health knowledge to users, potentially leading to an improvement in pregnancy-related outcomes and behaviours, and, ultimately a reduction in the present economic burden related to in-person interventions.ISRCTN, ISRCTN16254958. This prospective, observational study investigated changes in sleep and the effect on energy intake, gestational weight gain, and cardiometabolic health across pregnancy in 52 healthy pregnant women with obesity. Habitual sleep was assessed by wrist-worn actigraphy (time spent in bed; TIB, total sleep time; TST, and sleep efficiency) in early (13(0)-15(6) weeks) and late (35(0)-36(6)) pregnancy. A change to habitual sleep was defined as change of one-half of the standard deviation of TIB and TST across six consecutive nights from early pregnancy. Energy intake and changes in weight, fasting glucose, insulin, and lipids across pregnancy were compared between women who changed sleep. During early pregnancy, TIB was 9:24±0:08h and varied by 1:37±0:07h across the six nights. TST and sleep efficiency significantly declined from early to late pregnancy (7:03±0:08h to 6:28±0:09h, p

Disruption of the skeletal muscle circadian clock leads to a preferential shift towards lipid oxidation, while reducing carbohydrate oxidation. These effects are apparent at the whole-body level, including glucose intolerance, increased energy expenditure, and fasting hyperglycemia. We hypothesize that exercise counters these metabolic disturbances by modifying the skeletal muscle clock and reverting substrate metabolism back towards an optimal substrate balance.

Caloric restriction (CR) is a strategy that attenuates aging in multiple nonhuman species. The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE) trials are part of a research program aiming to test the effects of CR on aging and longevity biomarkers in humans. Building on CALERIE phase 1, CALERIE phase 2 (CALERIE 2) was the largest study to date to assess sustained CR in healthy humans without obesity. In a 24-month randomized controlled trial comprising 218 participants at baseline, CALERIE 2 showed that moderate CR, 11.9% on average, induced improvements in aging-related biomarkers without adversely affecting psychological or behavioral outcomes. The objectives of this report are to summarize and review the highlights of CALERIE 2 and report previously unpublished results on eating disorder symptoms and cognitive function. This article specifically summarizes the physiological, psychological, aging, behavioral, and safety results of the trial. Also provided are research directions beyond CALERIE 2 that highlight important opportunities to investigate the role of CR in aging, longevity, and health span in humans.

PURPOSE: Calorie restriction (CR) is an effective treatment for obesity-related liver and metabolic disease. However, CR studies in individuals without obesity are needed to see if CR could delay disease onset. Liver biomarkers indicate hepatic health and are linked to cardiometabolic disease. Our aim was to examine the effects of a two-year CR intervention on liver biomarkers in healthy individuals without obesity. METHODS: The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE) study was a two-year randomized controlled trial. Overall, 218 participants (body mass index: 25.1±1.7 kg/m(2)) were enrolled into control group (n=75) that ate ad libitum (AL) or a CR group (n=143) that aimed to decrease energy intake by 25%. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and bilirubin were measured during the trial. Context This study was designed to understand causes and critical periods for postpartum weight retention by characterizing changes in body composition, energy intake, energy expenditure and physical activity in women with obesity during pregnancy and postpartum. Design In this prospective, observational cohort study, body composition (plethysmography), energy expenditure (doubly labeled water, whole-body room calorimetry), physical activity (accelerometry), metabolic biomarkers, and eating behaviors were measured. Energy intake was calculated by the intake-balance method for pregnancy, and for 2 postpartum periods (0 to 6 months and 6 to 12 months). Results During the 18-month observation period, weight loss occurred in 16 (43%) women (mean ± SEM, −4.9 ± 1.6 kg) and weight retention occurred in 21 (57%) women (+8.6 ± 1.4 kg). Comparing women with postpartum weight loss and weight retention, changes in body weight were not different during pregnancy (6.9 ± 1.0 vs 9.5 ± 0.9 kg, P = 0.06). After pregnancy, women with postpartum weight loss lost −3.6 ± 1.8 kg fat mass whereas women with weight retention gained 6.2 ± 1.7 kg fat mass (P < 0.001). Women with postpartum weight loss reduced energy intake during the postpartum period (compared with during pregnancy) by 300 kcal/d (1255 kJ/d), while women with weight retention increased energy intake by 250 kcal/d (1046 kJ/d, P < 0.005). There were no differences in the duration of breastfeeding, eating behavior, or metabolic biomarkers. Conclusions Postpartum weight gain was the result of increased energy intake after pregnancy rather than decreased energy expenditure. Dietary intake recommendations are needed for women with obesity during the postpartum period, and women should be educated on the risk of overeating after pregnancy.

Summary: Background: For many cardiovascular risk factors there is no lower limit to which further reduction will result in decreased disease risk; this includes values within ranges considered normal for healthy adults. This seems to be true for new emerging metabolic risk factors identified by innovative technological advances. Further, there seems to be ever evolving evidence of differential responses to lifestyle interventions by sex and body compositions in the normal range. In this secondary analysis, we had the opportunity to test these principles for newly identified molecular biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk in a young (21–50 years), normal weight healthy population undergoing calorie restriction for two years. Methods: The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE™) was a 24-month, multicenter, randomized controlled trial (May 2007-November 2012) in healthy, adults without obesity to evaluate the potential for calorie restriction (CR) to promote anti-aging adaptations, including those associated with disease risk. 218 participants (age 37.9 ± 7.2 years and body mass index (BMI) 25.1 ± 1.7 kg/m2, mean±SD) were randomized 2:1 to 24 months of CR (prescribed as 25% reduction from baseline calorie intake) versus ad libitum (AL). Fasting plasma from baseline, 12, and 24 months was used for assessments of lipoproteins, metabolites, and inflammatory markers using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Findings: Averaging 11.9% CR, the CR group had reductions at 12 and 24 months in the cardiovascular disease risk markers, apolipoprotein B and GlycA, and risks for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes—Lipoprotein Insulin Resistance Index and Diabetes Risk Index (all PCRvsAL≤0.0009). Insulin resistance and diabetes risk improvements resulted from CR-induced alterations in lipoproteins, specifically reductions in triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles and low-density lipoprotein particles, a shift to larger high-density lipoprotein particles (more effective cholesterol transporters), and reductions in branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) (all PCRvsAL≤0.004). These CR responses were more pronounced in overweight than normal weight participants and greater in men than women. Interpretation: In normal to slightly overweight adults without overt risk factors or disease, 12 months of ∼12% CR improved newly identified risk markers for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. These markers suggest that CR improves risks by reducing inflammation and BCAAs and shifting lipoproteins from atherogenic to cholesterol transporting. Additionally, these improvements are greater for men and for those with greater BMIs indicating sex and BMI-influences merit attention in future investigations of lifestyle-mediated improvements in disease risk factors. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to characterize changes in body composition during pregnancy in women with obesity. METHODS Fifty-four healthy women with obesity (class 1, 30-34.9 kg/m2 : n = 25; class 2, 35-39.9 kg/m2 : n = 21; class 3, ≥ 40.0 kg/m2 : n = 8) expecting a singleton pregnancy were studied. Body composition was measured in early pregnancy (13-16 weeks), midpregnancy (24-27 weeks), and late pregnancy (35-37 weeks) using air displacement plethysmography, stable isotopes, and skinfold thickness measurements. A recent Perspective article described the “carbohydrate-insulin model (CIM)” of obesity, asserting that it “better reflects knowledge on the biology of weight control” as compared with what was described as the “dominant energy balance model (EBM),” which fails to consider “biological mechanisms that promote weight gain.” Unfortunately, the Perspective conflated and confused the principle of energy balance, a law of physics that is agnostic as to obesity mechanisms, with the EBM as a theoretical model of obesity that is firmly based on biology. In doing so, the authors presented a false choice between the CIM and a caricature of the EBM that does not reflect modern obesity science. Here, we present a more accurate description of the EBM where the brain is the primary organ responsible for body weight regulation operating mainly below our conscious awareness via complex endocrine, metabolic, and nervous system signals to control food intake in response to the body's dynamic energy needs as well as environmental influences. We also describe the recent history of the CIM and show how the latest “most comprehensive formulation” abandons a formerly central feature that required fat accumulation in adipose tissue to be the primary driver of positive energy balance. As such, the new CIM can be considered a special case of the more comprehensive EBM but with a narrower focus on diets high in glycemic load as the primary factor responsible for common obesity. We review data from a wide variety of studies that address the validity of each model and demonstrate that the EBM is a more robust theory of obesity than the CIM.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal obesity increases the risks for adverse pregnancy and offspring outcomes but with large heterogeneity. This study examined changes to the maternal metabolic milieu across pregnancy in women with obesity. It identified differences between a metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) phenotype and a metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) phenotype, as well as the differences in offspring adiposity between the two metabolic phenotypes. METHODS: In early pregnancy, women were classified with MHO (n = 13) or MUO (n = 9) based on the presence of zero or ≥2 risk factors for metabolic syndrome, respectively (systolic blood pressure > 130 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure > 85 mm Hg, HDL cholesterol < 50 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol ≥ 100 mg/dL, triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dL, and glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL). Area under the pregnancy concentration curve for glucose and triglycerides measured at early (13-16 weeks), mid- (24-27 weeks), and late (35-37 weeks) pregnancy, gestational weight gain (GWG), energy expenditure, maternal fat accretion, and infant body composition were compared. RESULTS: Maternal BMI, GWG, and fat accretion did not differ between MUO and MHO. Women with MUO had a greater area under the pregnancy concentration curve for glucose (+2,170 [382] mg/dL·day, p < 0.001) and triglycerides (+12,211 [3,916] mg/dL·day, p < 0.001). There were no differences in late-pregnancy total daily energy expenditure, but activity energy expenditure was significantly lower in MUO (−403 [144] kcal). MUO offspring had greater weight (+621 [205] g, p = 0.01) and adiposity (+5.8% [2.1%], p = 0.02) at 1 week of life but showed no differences in fat-free mass. CONCLUSIONS: Independent of GWG, MUO resulted in heightened exposure of fetal fat-promoting substrates. Differing metabolic phenotypes may explain heterogeneity of offspring adiposity born to women with obesity.

To examine if eating behaviors in mothers with low income relate to attitudes toward infant feeding and whether associations differed between breastfeeding and formula-feeding mothers.Cross-sectional study.Forty postpartum women (aged ≥ 18 years, body mass index ≥ 25 andamp;lt; 40 kg/mlt;supgt;2lt;/supgt;) in the Louisiana Women, Infants, and Children program participated in a telehealth postpartum intervention for health and weight loss.Maternal eating behaviors and infant feeding styles, assessed 6-8 weeks after birth (baseline) using validated questionnaires.Significance was detected using independent t tests, chi-square tests for independence, or linear models (Pamp;lt; 0.05).Most mothers formula-fed (n = 27, 68%). In formula-feeding mothers, maternal disinhibition and perceived hunger were positively associated with restrictive infant feeding (β = 0.41, Pamp;lt;0.001 and β = 0.41, P = 0.001, respectively). These relationships were significantly higher (Δ = -0.85, P = 0.006 and Δ = -0.59, P = 0.003, respectively) than among breastfeeding mothers. Comparatively, pressuring/overfeeding was lower in formula-feeding mothers than among breastfeeding mothers with dietary restraint (Δ slopes: 1.06, P = 0.02).In this cohort of mothers with low income, maternal eating behavior was associated with infant feeding styles only when feeding modality was considered. Mothers may benefit from education on how their eating behaviors can influence their infants and children.
