4. Impact of Surface Chemistry of Silicon Nanoparticles on the Structural and Electrochemical Properties of Si/Ni3.4Sn4 Com-posite Anode for Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract

Embedding silicon nanoparticles in an intermetallic matrix is a promising strategy to produce remarkable bulk anode materials for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries with low potential, high electrochemical capacity and good cycling stability. These composite materials can be synthetized at a large scale using mechanical milling. However, for Si-Ni3Sn4 composites, milling also induces a chemical reaction between the two components leading to the formation of free Sn and NiSi2, which is detrimental to the performance of the electrode. To prevent this reaction, a modification of the surface chemistry of the silicon has been undertaken. Si nanoparticles coated with a surface layer of either carbon or oxide were used instead of pure silicon. The influence of the coating on the composition, (micro)structure and electrochemical properties of Si-Ni3Sn4 composites is studied and compared with that of pure Si. Si coating strongly reduces the reaction between Si and Ni3Sn4 during milling. Moreover, contrary to pure silicon, Si-coated composites have a plate-like mor-phology in which the surface-modified silicon particles are surrounded by a nanostructured, Ni3Sn4-based matrix leading to smooth potential profiles during electrochemical cycling. The chemical homogeneity of the matrix is more uniform for carbon-coated than for oxygen-coated silicon. As a consequence, different electrochemical behaviors are obtained depending on the surface chemistry, with better lithiation properties for the carbon-covered silicon able to deliver over 500 mAh/g for at least 400 cycles.

Abstract

In this study, we used a predator-enabled metagenomics strategy to sample the virome of a remote and difficult-to-access densely forested African tropical region. Specifically, we focused our study on the use of army ants of the genus Dorylus that are obligate collective foragers and group predators that attack and overwhelm a broad array of animal prey. Using 209 army ant samples collected from 29 colonies and the virion-associated nucleic acid-based metagenomics approach, we showed that a broad diversity of bacterial, plant, invertebrate and vertebrate viral sequences were accumulated by army ants: including sequences from 157 different viral genera in 56 viral families. This suggests that using predators and scavengers such as army ants to sample broad swathes of tropical forest viromes can shed light on the composition and the structure of viral populations of these complex and inaccessible ecosystems.

Abstract

Botanical, mycological, zoological, and prokaryotic species names follow the Linnaean format, consisting of an italicized Latinized binomen with a capitalized genus name and a lower case species epithet (e.g., Homo sapiens). Virus species names, however, do not follow a uniform format, and, even when binomial, are not Linnaean in style. In this thought exercise, we attempted to convert all currently official names of species included in the virus family Arenaviridae and the virus order Mononegavirales to Linnaean binomials, and to identify and address associated challenges and concerns. Surprisingly, this endeavor was not as complicated or time-consuming as even the authors of this article expected when conceiving the experiment. Abstract

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection leads to around 800,000 deaths yearly and is considered to be a major public health problem worldwide. However, HBV origins remain poorly understood. Here, we looked for bat HBV (BtHBV) in different bat species in Gabon to investigate the role of these animals as carriers of ancestral hepadnaviruses because these viruses are much more diverse in bats than in other host species. DNA was extracted from 859 bat livers belonging to 11 species collected in caves and villages in the southeast of Gabon and analyzed using PCRs targeting the surface gene. Positive samples were sequenced using the Sanger method. BtHBV DNA was detected in 64 (7.4%) individuals belonging to eight species mainly collected in caves. Thirty-six (36) sequences among the 37 obtained after sequencing were phylogenetically close to the RBHBV strain recently isolated in Gabonese bats, while the remaining sequence was close to a rodent HBV strain isolated in America. The generalized linear mixed model showed that the variable species best explained the occurrence of BtHBV infection in bats. The discovery of a BtHBV strain homologous to a rodent strain in bats raises the possibility that these animals may be carriers of ancestral hepadnaviruses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

National audience; Lorsqu’il est en présence de métal liquide, un alliage métallique ductile à l’air peut être sen-sible à la fragilisation par les métaux liquides (FML), ce qui se traduit par une perte de ductili-té pouvant provoquer une rupture fragile partielle ou totale. La sensibilité à la FML d’un al-liage métallique dans un métal liquide donné dépend de différentes conditions (matériaux, chimie du métal liquide, vitesse, température, microstructure). Ainsi, il a été montré l’inexistence de spécificité à la FML : tout métal ou alliage métallique peut, sauf à démontrer le contraire, être sensible à la FML en présence d’un métal liquide pour des conditions spéci-fiques données. La dépendance de la sensibilité à la FML à de nombreux facteurs ainsi, que les différentes interactions possibles entre le matériau et le métal liquide expliquent que les mécanismes menant à la FML sont encore mal connus. Différents modèles existent mais leur validité n’est vérifiée que pour des cas très spécifiques sans que des observations notamment aux échelles microscopiques et nanoscopiques puissent les expliciter.Afin d’avancer sur la compréhension et la prédiction des phénomènes de FML, nous avons donc étudié en détail la sensibilité à la FML de laitons α en présence de l’eutectique Ga-In (EGaIn), non seulement les conditions de sensibilité à la FML, mais aussi l’étude des méca-nismes aux échelles macroscopiques, microscopiques et nanoscopiques par également des observations in-situ, et la modélisation des phénomènes à différentes échelles. L’EGaIn étant liquide à température ambiante, ce métal liquide permet des observations in-situ lors d’essais mécaniques. De plus, l’étude du comportement de différents alliages proches doit permettre d’étudier des évolutions de composition, de mécanisme de plasticité, de mouillage sur la sen-sibilité à la FML.La sensibilité à la FML du cuivre et de laitons contenant 15, 20, 25 et 30 % dépend de la mi-crostructure, la dureté, la composition en zinc et la vitesse de déformation. Le facteur le plus important semble la composition de l’alliage du cuivre, et donc à travers cela les mécanismes de plasticité du matériau solide. Dans les cas menant à la FML, pour des essais macrosco-piques, la rupture est ductile puis fragile de type intergranulaire ce qui s’explique par la for-mation de l’intermétallique CuGa2 et une déformation plastique importante nécessaire pour amorcer la FML. Les essais avec observations in situ au MEB et MET confirment la rupture fragile aux interfaces après une déformation plastique du matériau en présence de métal li-quide. La corrélation entre micro-essais de flexion et simulations par éléments finis a permis d’évaluer une ténacité en présence de métal liquide pour le Cu30%Zn, cohérente avec celle obtenue à partir de simulations à l’échelle atomique.Ce travail a été financé par l’ANR à travers le projet ANR GauguIn (N° ANR-18-CE08-0009-01).

Abstract

Rodents (Rodentia) are the most abundant and diverse order of mammals, present in all habitats, including urban areas. The traffic linked to globalisation has favoured their involvement in biological invasions that have an impact on local biodiversity, the economy and human health. In Franceville, Gabon, little is known about the rodent community. We therefore studied the composition and distribution of rodents along a gradient highlighting the heterogeneity of the city's landscape. The three habitat types studied showed no difference in small mammal abundance, while the diversity index was higher in the vegetated habitat (SDI = 0.73) compared to the outdoor (SDI = 0.71) and indoor (SDI = 0.45) habitats. Our work shows the importance of vegetal remnants in the city for the maintenance of native species. It also highlights the impact of introduced species on small mammal assemblages and the need for management to reduce the factors of their proliferation.

National audience; Lorsqu’il est en présence de métal liquide, un alliage métallique ductile à l’air peut être sensible à la fragilisation par les métaux liquides (FML), ce qui se traduit par une perte de ductilité pouvant provoquer une rupture fragile. La sensibilité à la FML dépend de différentes conditions (matériaux, chimie du métal liquide, vitesse, température, microstructure). De plus, les mécanismes menant à la FML sont encore mal connus ; en effet différents modèles existent mais leur validité n’est vérifiée que pour des cas très spécifiques sans que des observations notamment aux échelles microscopique et nanoscopiques puissent les expliciter. Afin d’avancer sur la compréhension et la prédiction des phénomènes de FML, nous avons étudié en détail la sensibilité à la FML de laitons α en présence de l’eutectique In-Ga (EGaIn), non seulement les conditions de sensibilité à la FML, mais aussi l’étude des mécanismes aux échelles macroscopiques et microscopiques par des observations in-situ, et la modélisation des phénomènes. La sensibilité à la FML du cuivre et de laitons contenant 15, 20, 25 et 30 % dépend de la microstructure, la dureté, la composition en zinc et la vitesse de déformation. Le facteur le plus important semble la composition de l’alliage du cuivre, et donc à travers cela les mécanismes de plasticité du matériau solide. Dans les cas menant à la FML, pour des essais macroscopiques, la rupture est ductile puis fragile de type intergranulaire ce qui s’explique par la formation de l’intermétallique CuGa2 et une déformation plastique nécessaire pour amorcer la FML. Les essais avec observations in situ au MEB et MET confirment la rupture fragile aux interfaces après une déformation plastique du matériau. La corrélation entre micro-essais de flexion et simulations par éléments finis a permis d’évaluer une ténacité en présence de métal liquide pour le Cu30%Zn, cohérente avec celle obtenue à partir de simulations à l’échelle atomique.Ce travail a été financé par l’ANR à travers le projet ANR GauguIn (N° ANR-18-CE08-0009-01).

Abstract

International audience; Liquid metal embrittlement of an otherwise ductile material is an en vironmentally induced fracture phenomenon characterized by poten tially high brittle crack propagation rate and deleterious effects onmechanical properties. Its phenomenology is still not well understood,in particular in terms of prediction of sensible couples and about thedetailed intergranular fracture mechanisms. Here we will report onthe study in the copper systems via both an energetic and QM/MMapproaches at the atomic level to predict the sensitivity of model ma terials to liquid metal embrittlement. The main goal is to try to linkmicro-testing (flexion in FIB prepared samples or by in-situ TEM) toa sound modelling at the atomistic scale via fracture mechanics typesollicitations. The progress towards predictability of liquid metal em brittlement systems and understanding of fracture mechanisms will bepresented along with a vision about their experimental validation.
