Abstract

We introduce a monolithic Brillouin generator based on a semiconductor micropillar cavity embedding a high frequency nanoacoustic resonator operating in the hundreds of GHz range. The concept of two nested resonators allows an independent design of the ultrahigh frequency Brillouin spectrum and of the optical device. We develop an optical free-space technique to characterize spontaneous Brillouin scattering in this monolithic device and propose a measurement protocol that maximizes the Brillouin generation efficiency in the presence of optically induced thermal effects. The compact and versatile Brillouin generator studied here could be readily integrated into fibered and on-chip architectures., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model is likely the simplest one-dimensional concept to study non-trivial topological phases and topological excitations. Originally developed to explain the electric conductivity of polyacetylene, it has become a platform for the study of topological effects in electronics, photonics and ultra-cold atomic systems. Here, we propose an experimentally feasible implementation of the SSH model based on coupled one-dimensional acoustic nanoresonators working in the GHz-THz range. In this simulator it is possible to implement different signs in the nearest neighbor interaction terms, showing full tunability of all parameters in the SSH model. Based on this concept we construct topological transition points generating nanophononic edge and interface states and propose an easy scheme to experimentally probe their spatial complex amplitude distribution directly by well-established optical pump-probe techniques., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We propose a novel acoustic cavity design where we confine a mechanical mode by adiabatically changing the acoustic properties of a GaAs/AlAs superlattice. By means of high resolution Raman scattering measurements, we experimentally demonstrate the presence of a confined acoustic mode at a resonance frequency around 350 GHz. We observe an excellent agreement between the experimental data and numerical simulations based on a photoelastic model. We demonstrate that the spatial profile of the confined mode can be tuned by changing the magnitude of the adiabatic deformation, leading to strong variations of its mechanical quality factor and Raman scattering cross section. The reported alternative confinement method could lead to the development of a novel generation of nanophononic and optomechanical systems.

Abstract

Recent experiments demonstrated that GaAs-AlAs based micropillar cavities are promising systems for quantum optomechanics, allowing the simultaneous three-dimensional confinement of near-infrared photons and acoustic phonons in the 18-100 GHz range. Here, we investigate through numerical simulations the optomechanical properties of this new platform. We evidence how the Poisson's ratio and semiconductor-vacuum boundary conditions lead to very distinct features in the mechanical and optical three dimensional confinement. We find a strong dependence of the mechanical quality factor and strain distribution on the micropillar radius, in great contrast to what is predicted and observed in the optical domain. The derived optomechanical coupling constants g_0 reach ultra-large values in the 10^6 rad/s range.

Abstract

Aims A previous randomized study demonstrated that the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) was noninferior to transvenous ICD with respect to device-related complications and inappropriate shocks. However, that was performed prior to the widespread adoption of pulse generator implantation in the intermuscular (IM) space instead of the traditional subcutaneous (SC) pocket. The aim of this analysis was to compare survival from device-related complications and inappropriate shocks between patients who underwent S-ICD implantation with the generator positioned in an IM position in comparison with an SC pocket. Methods and results We analysed 1577 consecutive patients who had undergone S-ICD implantation from 2013 to 2021 and were followed up until December 2021. Subcutaneous patients (n = 290) were propensity matched with patients of the IM group (n = 290), and their outcomes were compared. : During a median follow-up of 28 months, device-related complications were reported in 28 (4.8%) patients and inappropriate shocks were reported in 37 (6.4%) patients. The risk of complication was lower in the matched IM group than in the SC group [hazard ratio 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.17-0.99, P = 0.041], as well as the composite of complications and inappropriate shocks (hazard ratio 0.50, 95% CI 0.30-0.86, P = 0.013). The risk of appropriate shocks was similar between groups (hazard ratio 0.90, 95% CI 0.50-1.61, P = 0.721). There was no significant interaction between generator positioning and variables such as gender, age, body mass index, and ejection fraction. Conclusion Our data showed the superiority of the IM S-ICD generator positioning in reducing device-related complications and inappropriate shocks.

Abstract

In the present study, we were interested to investigate how autistic traits (including systemizing and empathy) and academic degree influence individuals’ visuospatial abilities. To this end, 352 university students completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), the Empathy Quotient, the Systemizing Quotient (SQ) and visuospatial tests measuring figure disembedding and mental rotation of two-dimensional figures. Engineering-design students (architecture and engineering) were the most accurate in disembedding and mentally rotating figures, followed by students of physical sciences (computer science, chemistry, physics, etc.) and fact-based humanities (languages, classics, law); biological (psychology and neuroscience, etc.) and systems-based social scientists (economics and commerce) were the least accurate. Engineering-design students also showed higher SQ scores with respect to the other four academic degree subjects, with students of biological sciences showing lower SQ scores. Importantly, results from a path analysis revealed that SQ (but not AQ) exerted an indirect effect on figure disembedding and mental rotations through the influence of the academic degree. Thus, the present findings reveal shadydifferences in systemizing degree and visuospatial performance withinsystemizing-based degree subjects.Implications for education are discussed.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research in which reconstructive digital modelling operates on different areas of heritage and at different scales to realize an analysis, interpretation, and communication experience in the field of museum valorization. It is, in fact, a work that includes both the philological reconstruction of the lost parts of a Buddha statue of Gandhāra, dating back to the second century b.C. and kept at the Museum of Oriental Art (MAO) in Turin, and its contextualization within a coeval architectural complex, recognized as philologically compatible, located in Balo-Kale, in the region of Gandhāra. The reconstructive models are finally used with communicative purposes for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications inside the museum.

Abstract

A dianiline derivative of a symmetric donor-acceptor-donor diketopyrrolopyrrole-based dye is employed for the two-sided covalent functionalization of liquid exfoliated few layers graphene flakes, through a direct arylation reaction. The resulting nanohybrid features the properties of a polymeric species, being solution-processed into homogeneous thin films, featuring a pronounced red-shift of the main absorption band with respect to the model dye unit and energy levels comparable to those of common diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymers. A good electrical conductivity and the absence of radical signals generated after intense white light illumination, as probed through electron paramagnetic resonance, suggest a possible future application of this composite material in the field of photoprotective, antistatic layers with tunable colors.

Abstract

Computer animation and, particularly, virtual character animation, are very time consuming and skill-intensive tasks, which require animators to work with sophisticated user interfaces. Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) already proved to be capable of making character animation more intuitive, and possibly more efficient, by leveraging the affordances provided by physical props that mimic the structure of virtual counterparts. The main downside of existing TUI-based animation solutions is the reduced accuracy, which is due partly to the use of mechanical parts, partly to the fact that, despite the adoption of a 3D input, users still have to work with a 2D output (usually represented by one or more views displayed on a screen). However, output methods that are natively 3D, e.g., based on virtual reality (VR), have been already exploited in different ways within computer animation scenarios. By moving from the above considerations and by building upon an existing work, this paper proposes a VR-based character animation system that combines the advantages of TUIs with the improved spatial awareness, enhanced visualization and better control on the observation point in the virtual space ensured by immersive VR. Abstract

INTRODUZIONE. La politica, ovvero la scienza e l’arte di amministrare la cosa pubblica, è un ambito di grande importanza e occuparsi di politica professionale significa dedicarsi al bene della professione. Le politiche professionali sono parte integrante del prendersi cura e la famiglia professionale ha bisogno di punti chiari di riferimento: formazione, tutela, promozione, rappresentanza istituzionale. OBIETTIVO. Esplorare percezioni, idealità, immaginario condiviso e desideri circa le politiche professionali di infermieri/ostetriche e studenti della laurea magistrale per riuscire ad avere una rappresentazione della realtà e avviare una riflessione critica sul tema. METODO. È stato effettuato uno studio qualitativo su un campione propositivo di 22 professionisti infermieri/ostetriche quali testimoni qualificati della situazione nazionale. I dati sono stati raccolti attraverso un questionario costruito ad hoc. RISULTATI. Dall’analisi delle risposte sono emersi 10 temi principali, tra i quali spiccano: per la formazione l’importanza delle nuove conoscenze ma anche la scarsa differenziazione dei ruoli; per l’ambito lavorativo l’assenza di meritocrazia e di nuove opportunità; per la ricerca il divario tra teoria e pratica. In sintesi, i risultati evidenziano come la partecipazione ai processi di formazione delle politiche sia saltuaria e di poca intensità e come pochi infermieri/ostetriche siano coinvolti attivamente per la promozione e sviluppo di progetti nel settore delle politiche per i sistemi sanitari e per la salute. CONCLUSIONI. L’indagine rileva che vi è una coscienza forte delle problematicità esistenti, ma questa coscienza non sembra relazionarsi adeguatamente ai contesti lavorativi, istituzionali e culturali. Di conseguenza non si verifica quella necessaria crescita delle politiche professionali, la sola capace di generare percorsi politici atti a risolvere le questioni di fondo., INTRODUCTION: Politics, the science and the art of administering public affairs, is a very important field. Professional policies are an integral part of taking care; the professional family needs clear reference points: training, tutoring, promotion and institutional representation. AIM: Exploring perceptions, ideals, shared imagination and desires about the professional policies of nurses/midwives and of master's students in order to be able to have a representation of the reality and to start a critical reflection on the subject. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted on a proactive sample of 22 nurses / midwives as qualified witnesses of the national situation. The data was collected through a questionnaire built ad hoc. RESULTS: From the analysis of the answers given to the questionnaire, we identified 10 main themes. In the training sector two of the themes that were selected are the importance of the new knowledges and inadequate differentiation of the positions; Regarding the working sector two of the themes that came out are the lack of meritocracy and of new opportunities; meanwhile, in the research field one of the main theme identified is the gap between the theory and the practice. CONCLUSION: The present study finds out that participation in policy-making processes is occasional and of little intensity: just few nurses/midwives are actively involved in the promotion and development of projects in the health sector and of healthcare policies.

40. Functionalization of transparent conductive oxide electrode for TiO2-free perovskite solar cells.

Abstract

Many of the best performing solar cells based on perovskite-halide light absorbers use TiO2 as an electron selective contact layer. However, TiO2 usually requires high temperature sintering, is related to electrical instabilities in perovskite solar cells, and causes cell performance degradation under full solar spectrum illumination. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach based on the modification of transparent conductive oxide electrodes with self-assembled siloxane-functionalized fullerene molecules, eliminating TiO2 or any other additional electron transporting layer. We demonstrate that these molecules spontaneously form a homogenous monolayer acting as an electron selective layer on top of the fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode, minimizing material consumption. We find that the fullerene-modified FTO is a robust, chemically inert charge selective contact for perovskite based solar cells, which can reach 15% of stabilised power conversion efficiency in a flat junction device architecture using a scalable, low temperature, and reliable process. In contrast to TiO2, devices employing a molecularly thin functionalized fullerene layer show unaffected performance after 67 h of UV light exposure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Il contributo analizza la disciplina dell'UE in tema di riconoscimento delle qualifiche e dei titoli professionali di lavoratori subordinati, autonomi, professionisti, imprenditori (comprese le questioni inerenti a titoli e cittadini extra-UE). In particolare, vengono considerate le regole semplificate al fine della prestazione di servizi transfrontaliera e soprattutto il triplice regime di riconoscimento (automatico per armonizzazione della disciplina materiale speciale, per esperienza professionale, regime generale residuale) finalizzato alla libertà di stabilimento, oltreché la casistica specifica (riconoscimento parziale, accesso al pubblico impiego, valenza dei tirocini professionali, disciplina speciale per le professioni legali, etc.). Il delineato quadro denota un’evoluzione normativa notevole negli ultimi due decenni, assai apprezzabile ma ancora non pienamente soddisfacente.

Abstract

Purpose: Ablation index (AI) is a radiofrequency lesion quality marker. The AI value that allows effective and safe pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is still debated. We evaluated the incidence of acute and late PV reconnection (PVR) with different AI settings and its predictors. Methods: The Ablation Index Registry is a multicenter study that included patients with paroxysmal/persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) who underwent first-time ablation. Each operator performed the ablation using his preferred ablation catheter (ThermoCool® SmartTouch or Surround Flow) and AI setting (380 posterior-500 anterior and 330 posterior-450 anterior). We divided the study population into two groups according to the AI setting used: group 1 (330–450) and group 2 (380–500). Incidence of acute PVR was validated within 30 min after PVI, whereas the incidence of late PVR was evaluated at repeat procedure. Results: Overall, 490 patients were divided into groups 1 (258) and 2 (232). There was no significant difference in the procedural time, fluoroscopy time, and rate of the first-pass PVI between the two study groups. Acute PVR was observed in 5.6% PVs. The rate of acute PVR was slightly higher in group 2 (64/943, 6.8%, PVs) than in group 1 (48/1045, 4.6% PVs, p = 0.04). Thirty patients (6%) underwent a repeat procedure and late PVR was observed in 57/116 (49%) PVs (number of reconnected PV per patient of 1.9 ± 1.6). A similar rate of late PVR was found in the two study groups. No predictors of acute and late PVR were found. Conclusion: Ablation with a lower range of AI is highly effective and is not associated with a higher rate of acute and late PVR. No predictors of PV reconnection were found.

Nelle sue innumerevoli metamorfosi giapponesi, Wuthering Heights rappresenta uno degli esempi meglio riusciti di transmedialità a livello globale. Nella feconda contaminazione di generi e stili iniziata all’inizio degli anni Venti in Giappone - grazie alla mediazione accademica di Edmund Blunden, nonché alla prima traduzione di Yamato Yasuo del 1932 – il testo originale di Emily Brontë prende strade inaspettate. Insospettabili. Da romanzo, si trasforma in musical per il teatro di rivista Takarazuka fino ad approdare sul grande schermo in una versione irriconoscibile e dislocata nel tempo ad opera del cineasta Yoshida Yoshishige. Numerose saranno le versioni manga nella seconda metà del Novecento, anche in ambito omoerotico. Riletture che spingono a riflettere sul rapporto che si instaura tra centro e periferia. Tra i confini del romanzo e i metatesti infiniti che da questo possono e potranno scaturire.

Abstract

Background Ablation index (AI) is a new lesion quality marker that has been demonstrated to allow a high single-procedure arrhythmia-free survival in single-center studies. This prospective, multi-center study was designed to evaluate the reproducibility of pulmonary vein (PV) isolation guided by the AI. Methods A total of 490 consecutive patients with paroxysmal (80.4%) and persistent AF underwent first time PV isolation and were divided in four study groups according to operator's preference in choosing the ablation catheter (a contact force (ST) or contact force surround flow (STSF) catheter) and the AI setting (330-450 or 380-500 at anterior wall or posterior wall, respectively). Results At 12 months a high rate of freedom from AF recurrences was observed in patients with both paroxysmal and persistent AF (91% vs 83.3%; P = .039). There was no difference in the rate of AF recurrence among the four study groups (4.5% in group ST330-450, 12.2% in group ST 380-500, 14.9% in group STSF330-450, 9.4% in group STSF380-500; P = .083). Recurrence was also similar between patients treated with a ST (8%) or STSF catheter (12.1%; P = .2), and within patients targeting an AI settings of 330 to 450 (10.9%) or 380 to 500 (10.3%; P = .64). In patients with paroxysmal AF, there was no difference (P = .12) in the 1-year freedom from AF recurrence among 14 operators that performed ≥10 ablation procedure. Conclusions An ablation protocol respecting strict criteria for contiguity and quality lesion resulted in high rate of 1-year freedom from AF recurrence, irrespective of the ablation catheters, AI settings, and operator.

Abstract

We report here the first example of a covalent functional nanocarbon hybrid based on a benchmark metal-free donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) dye and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The dyad, prepared by direct arylation of the RGO surface by means of an aniline derivative of the D-π-A species, has been thoroughly characterized in terms of dye loading percentage and spectroscopic properties, in comparison with the reference free dye, pristine RGO, and with an analogous non-covalent dye-RGO hybrid. When used as a photosensitizing agent in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC), the covalent hybrid demonstrated lower photovoltaic performances compared to the cell with the reference dye, a result that was mostly ascribed to the lower dye content of the former. Furthermore, the RGO based sensitizer showed stronger binding to the semiconductor oxide in comparison to the reference dye, paving the way to a new generation of DSSC photoanodes with improved chemical stability. This work demonstrates the full potential of the new class of hybrid sensitizers to equal or even exceed the photovoltaic performances achieved by standard organic photovoltaic sensitizers once molecular engineering of the functional nanocarbon hybrid has been refined.

Abstract

A dianiline derivative of a symmetric donor-acceptor-donor diketopyrrolopyrrole-based dye is employed for the two-sided covalent functionalization of liquid exfoliated few layers graphene flakes, through a direct arylation reaction. The resulting nanohybrid features the properties of a polymeric species, being solution-processed into homogeneous thin films, featuring a pronounced red-shift of the main absorption band with respect to the model dye unit and energy levels comparable to those of common diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymers. A good electrical conductivity and the absence of radical signals generated after intense white light illumination, as probed through electron paramagnetic resonance, suggest a possible future application of this composite material in the field of photoprotective, antistatic layers with tunable colors.

Si illustra l'importanza del ritrovamento e della trascrizione di un corposo manoscritto relativo alla 'Parte speciale' dell'opera 'Confronti testuali. Contributo alla dottrina delle interpolazioni giustinianee' di Lauro chiazzese. Il testo offre una ricchissima sinossi analitica di 1170 testi giuridici romani pervenuti in più versioni, delle quali almeno una all'interno del Corpus iuris; e costituisce non soltanto un documento storiografico di eccezionale valore per lo studio e la valutazione della stagione della critica interpolazionistica, ma anche, e soprattutto, un prezioso strumento di consultazione per l'esame capillare dei passi paralleli e una fonte di spunti critici originali ancora oggi utili per nuove ricerche in tema di critica testuale, di evoluzione del diritto privato nel Tardoantico e in età giustinianea, per le tecniche .compilatorie.
