Abstract: Phytoextraction field trials with Noccaea caerulescens were conducted in Brussels (Belgium) to investigate the benefits of nitrogen fertilization and planting density on phytoextraction efficiency. Both metallicolous (Ganges) and non-metallicolous (NMET, Luxembourg) populations were grown for 6 months in an urban wasteland and in a vegetable garden contaminated with trace metals at two planting densities (50 and 100 plants·m−2, D50 and D100), with and without mineral nitrogen fertilizers. Trials showed that N. caerulescens responded positively to nitrogen fertilization through increased biomass production. However due to lower concentrations in Cd and Zn in fertilized plants, the total metal uptake was differently impacted by fertilization: on one site metal uptake was enhanced while on the other it was reduced. Moreover fertilization had collateral effects as enhancing fungal pathogen development. The effect of planting density of N. caerulescens assessed in this work for the first time highlighted a clear competition between individuals at higher density – proved by lower individual biomass – but the highest metal uptake was nevertheless achieved at the highest density of 100 plants·m−2 because of higher total biomass. Six months after harvest soil exchangeable concentrations were reduced by about 25% for Cd with Ganges population and by 9% for Zn with the NMET population on the best treatment (N fertilized and D100). The feasibility of using N. caerulescens for bioavailable contaminant stripping of moderately contaminated soils was confirmed for Cd and to a lesser extent for Zn.

Abstract: International audience; Waste generation and management is a global issue receiving increasing attention. Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris generate high percentages of a country’s total solid waste, and has been estimated to contribute to 35% of the solid waste generated worldwide. Construction of Technosols is an innovative process based on the association of organic and mineral wastes to construct fertile soils that are favorable environment for plant growth. Such an approach could be a relevant solution to recycle significant amount of C&D materials as these waste could provide valuable properties such as bearing and drainage capacities and buffer capacity to the constructed Technosols. Technosols in various situations around the world are discussed as well as the actual and potential ecosystem services provided by such artificial soils. The presentation focuses on their designs and biotic choice. We explain and predict the assembly and function of Technosols under varieties of environmental conditions. Humans have total control over such soils and play a dominant role on every aspect and stages, providing a lot of opportunities. However, wrong choices can have tremendously negative consequences: every action should be weighted and evaluated carefully when manipulating these systems, to maximize Technosols ecological benefits while minimizing the ecological risk.

Abstract: One quarter of the living beings are located beneath our feet but we know very little of them (FAO, 2020). This statement will perhaps quickly change because the soils are now on the political agenda. For France, soil is mentioned in the Green Pact at European level (Montanarella, 2020) and in the country government's Biodiversity Plan. The law on soil health is also planned for 2023 (Köninger et al., 2022). However, as its biological component remains poorly understood, the indicators used by stakeholders give only a biased view of soil quality (Lehmann et al., 2020). It is therefore urgent to catch up on the knowledge of soil biodiversity in order to establish benchmarks for bioindicators, based on standardised data.In parallel, the French Biodiversity Office working on the linkages between all French terrestrial biodiversity monitorings, pointed out the absence of soil biodiversity monitoring in France.Rather than creating de novo a soil biodiversity monitoring, it was preferred to add biodiversity surveys to the already existing French Soil Quality Monitoring Network (RMQS), hereafter called the RMQS-Biodiversity. The RMQS covers a big part of the French territory (the continental part as the over seas) since 2000. Every year, 180 study sites are sampled. Thus, all the sites are sampled in 10-12 years (Jolivet et al., 2018). The RMQS provides data about all physical and chemical aspects of soils. Regarding the soil biological component, microorganisms and enzymatic activities are also surveyed. By the past, soil fauna was studied on around 100 sites but the experience was not maintained (Imbert et al., 2021). Moreover, a major strength of the RMQS is the network of involved people included the 12 field teams, the coordination team, the funders and data users (researchers and stakeholders).To implement the biological measurements, we gathered a group of experts on soil biodiversity. As meetings go by, five protocols were defined to assess the most exhaustively possible the soil biodiversity taxa and three functions (soil macroporosity, enzymatic activities and organic matter degradation). Then, the protocols were tested in real conditions on 30 RMQS study sites with the field teams. The duration of each protocol was quoted to clearly assess the costs.We concluded that the biodiversity sampling of 180 RMQS study sites per year, would cost around 1 000 000 euros. We propose five scenarios giving compromises between financial costs and data quality.If the RMQS-Biodiversity is maintained, it would make possible: 1) to advance on the still too partial knowledge of soil biodiversity and its interactions with agricultural practices and 2) based on the knowledge acquired, to develop bioindicators and their benchmarks, in order to accurately assess soil quality, in the context of Soil Health (Lehmann et al., 2020). A complete soil monitoring, including its three components (physical, chemical and now biological), would thus provide a relevant tool to policy- makers to reach reconciling human activities and soil integrity.

Abstract: The sustainable use and management of global soils is one of the greatest challenges for the future. In the urban ecosystem, soils play an essential role with their functions and ecosystem services. However, they are still poorly taken into consideration to enhance the sustainable development of urban ecosystems. This paper proposes a categorization of soils of urbanized areas, i.e., areas strongly affected by human activities, according to their ecosystem services. Focus is put first on ecosystem services provided by non-urban soils. Then, the characteristics and number of services provided by soil groups of urbanized areas and their importance are given for each soil group. Soils of urbanized areas are here defined as SUITMAs, because they include soils of urban, sensu stricto, industrial, traffic, mining, and military areas. This definition refers to a large number of soil types of strongly anthropized areas. SUITMAs were organized in four soil groups, i.e., (1) pseudo-natural soils, (2) vegetated engineered soils, (3) dumping site soils, and (4) sealed soils. For each soil group, examples for ecosystem services were given, evaluated, and ranked. This proposal contributes to foster the dialogue between urban spatial planning and soil scientists to improve both soil science in the city and recognition of SUITMAs regarding their role for the sustainable development of urban ecosystems and, in particular, to enhance multifunctional soils in urban areas.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction- Considering the few number of bioindicators available for soil risk assessment and soil characterization, a national research programme has been set up in France by the French Agency For Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) to develop indicators able to judge about soil degradation and/or remediation of its properties and functions. Objectives of this “BioIndicator programme” are to (i) develop and validate methods for measuring soil biodiversity and soil functions, (ii) test the sensibility and complementarity of the bioindicators for the characterization of different perturbations (contamination, modification of soil uses), iii) identify relevant bioindicators or endpoints for different purposes (ecological risk assessment, monitoring of soil quality..), iv) transfer the results to stakeholders (policy makers, farmers, research board) by providing suitable tools. Methods- 22 research teams are involved. 47 bioindicators are tested (microorganisms, fauna, flora) in a large panel of situations (47 situations including agricultural, industrial and forest sites) and sampled at the same moment by applying standardised sampling protocols. A common database allows the management of the high number of data (200.000). Results- Bioindicator programme initiates a first national benchmark i.e. baselines values for the different biological groups. It provides relevant tools (battery of bioindicators, biological index) adapted to different environmental targets such as i) evaluation of the impact of agricultural practices (crop rotations, reduced tillage, organic and pesticides management), ii) evaluation of the bioavailability of industrial contaminants, iii) evaluation of the biological state of contaminated soils in order to orientate their future use, iv) soil monitoring of biological state at large scale. Moreover, it provides communication tools, such as bioindicator technical sheets and web-interface addressed to stakeholders (http://ecobiosoil.univ-rennes1.fr/ADEME-Bioindicateur/). Conclusion- this10 years research programme, unique at the European Union scale, permits to improve the knowledge on soil biodiversity and its functioning, and provides tools to stakeholders for future soil management.

Abstract: International audience; Interrill erosion is driven by raindrops and sheet flow. Raindrop impacts cause sediment detachment and splash, but can also affect flow transport. Even if these processes have been studied for long, the actual effect of raindrop impacts on particle settling velocities has not been experimentally assessed. This leads to unconstrained adjustments in the soil erosion models, the settling velocity of particles being a freely adjustable parameter allowing for better fitting the particle flux measured at the outlet. To address the effect of raindrop impacts on the settling of particles in sheet flow, a laboratory flume experiment was designed, using an upstream feeder of sediment (100–200 μm) and simulated rainfalls. It reproduced conditions close to sheet flow, while not allowing for the detachment of particles from the flume bottom. Two series of experiments were run: a series with a high rainfall intensity (175 mm h−1) generated by an oscillating-nozzle rainfall simulator, and a series with lower rainfall intensities (10, 15, 25, 35, 55 mm h−1) generated by a drop-former rainfall simulator. When a rainfall was applied, it systematically decreased the sediment concentration at the outflow compared to the no rain condition, however no obvious relationship was found with the rainfall intensity. This shows that raindrop impacts increase particle settling velocities in sheet flow. Two underlying mechanisms are suggested, related to the momentum of the raindrops or to the turbulence caused by the raindrops into the flow. Further studies should be carried out, using computational fluid dynamics and collaboration with the fluid mechanics community.

Abstract: International audience; PurposeUrbanization is a major driver of land use change and can affect the soil organic carbon (SOC) pools. This study aimed to understand the urbanization impact on SOC stocks and pools at profile scale (0–100 cm).MethodsThe SOC was studied at 0–30 and 0–100 cm depths in park and sealed soils of three French cities (Marseille, Nancy, and Nantes). Physical fractionation was performed to gain insight on the size of different SOC pools (particulate and organo-mineral soil fractions).ResultsThe SOC stocks were seven to ten times higher in parks than in sealed soils, but lower than in natural soils according to literature data. The contribution of the first 30 cm to profile SOC stock was around 40%, with strong heterogeneity, especially in sealed soils. Considering the whole 0–100 cm profile, SOC stocks in particulate organic matter fractions (light fraction > 50 µm) were 25–48 times higher in parks than in sealed soils, while SOC stocks in mineral-associated fractions ( 50 µm, particularly in sealed soils (11% in average at 0–100 cm depth). This fraction associated to sand is usually poor in SOC in natural or agricultural soils. In these urban soils, it might be bitumen, a dense organic artifact.ConclusionThe SOC stocks up to 100 cm depth and their heterogeneity pleaded to strengthen and expand SOC studies in all urban soils.

Abstract: Nickel hyperaccumulation in Blepharidium guatemalense Standl. (Rubiaceae) was found in the tropical forests of south-eastern Mexico. This study aimed to document the geographic extent of nickel hyperaccumulation in this species, to understand its process of hyperaccumulation and to explore nickel distribution within the tissues of this plant. To accomplish these objectives, a complete non-destructive elemental screening of herbarium specimens was performed with a hand-held X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Besides, rhizosphere soils and plant tissues were collected in Mexico and analyzed for physical–chemical parameters. Finally, elemental distribution maps of nickel and other elements in plant tissues were obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. This study revealed that Blepharidium guatemalense is distributed throughout Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche, reaching the maximum nickel concentration in leaves (4.3 wt%) followed by roots and seeds (2.0 wt%) and bark (1.8 wt%). Simultaneous hyperaccumulation of cobalt and nickel was found in 15% of the herbarium specimens. Blepharidium guatemalense has uncommon re-distribution mechanisms via phloem since this tissue is the highest nickel-enriched from all parts of the plant (from roots to leaves). A high total nickel (mean of 610 µg g−1) was found in rhizosphere soils even though no evidence of ophiolite emplacement in that area has been reported. Blepharidium guatemalense represents the first hypernickelophore (> 1 wt% Ni) to be reported as growing in soils that are neither ultramafic nor enriched by anthropogenic pollutants.

Abstract: Aims: Dicranopteris linearis is a rare earth element (REE), aluminium (Al) and silicon (Si) hyperaccumulator plant which occurs in southern China. To date, there have been no studies on the variation in elemental accumulation among populations of Dicranopteris linearis occurring on REE-enriched and non-REE enriched soils. Methods: In total 43 Dicranopteris linearis individuals and the corresponding rhizosphere soils from 7 populations in southern China were sampled and the plant material and soil composition were chemically analysed for REE and other elements. Results: Dicranopteris linearis populations from REE-enriched soils and non-REE enriched soils both have the ability to accumulate high concentrations of REE (> 1000 mg kg− 1), Al (> 1000 mg kg− 1) and Si (> 10 000 mg kg− 1). The ratios of light REEs (LREEs) to heavy REEs (HREEs) in Dicranopteris linearis pinnae are consistently > 1, regardless of their ratios in the corresponding soils. Concentrations of REE in Dicranopteris linearis pinnae vary significantly among populations and have positive correlations with total and extractable soil REE concentrations. The plant Al and Si concentrations in Dicranopteris linearis populations are uncoupled from variations in soil Al and Si concentrations. The plant REE concentrations have no obvious relationships with the prevailing Al concentrations, but are positively correlated with plant Si and Mn, and negatively correlated with soil extractable P concentrations. Conclusions: The hyperaccumulation of REEs (LREE > HREE), Al and Si in non-REE enriched soils is a species-wide trait. The accumulation of REEs is highly variable and associated with soil REE concentrations, nutrients status, and other soil properties.

Abstract: Aims: The Australian native hemi-aquatic herb C. helmsii (Crassulaceae) is a copper (Cu) accumulator, tolerant to a wide range of climatic conditions and able to concentrate >9000 μg Cu g−1 in its living tissues. These characteristics suggest practical potential for decontamination of Cu-polluted mine waste waters using a phyto-extraction approach. The aim of this study was to investigate Cu uptake in C. helmsii at different Cu2+ concentrations in solution and to test for the effect of pH on the concentration of free Cu2+ and Cu accumulation in this species. Methods: Different solutions were tested in acid (pH 4.0) and mildly acidic (pH 5.8) conditions at five different Cu2+ concentrations (ranging from 0 to 5 mg Cu L−1). The concentration of free Cu2+ was evaluated using Geochem-EZ software. The distribution of Cu in C. helmsii tissues was examined with micro-X-ray Fluorescence (μXRF) elemental mapping and with Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Results: The highest shoot Cu concentration in C. helmsii was 5870 μg Cu g−1 in the 5 mg Cu L−1 treatment. Copper bioaccumulation was positively correlated with the Cu2+ treatment in the different solutions. The μXRF and SEM-EDS analysis revealed that roots accumulated higher Cu concentrations than the shoots. The concentration of free Cu2+ was shown to be dependent upon the type of Fe-chelator (DTPA, EDDHA, HBED) used in the solution due to the displacement of Fe3+ and complexation of Cu2+. Conclusions: Crassula helmsii is highly tolerant to Cu2+ in solution at acidic and mildly acidic pH, and able to accumulate high Cu concentrations in its tissue. This confirms its potential for applications in Cu phyto-extraction of acidic mine effluent waters high in Cu2+.

Abstract: International audience; Background and Aims: In tropical ultramafic soils, potassium (K) is typically the most growth limiting nutrient. However, tropical nickel (Ni) hyperaccumulator plants, including Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi and Rinorea cf. bengalensis (which are ‘metal crops’ used in agromining) from Malaysia, have unusually high K shoot accumulation compared to other species, despite naturally growing on severely K-impoverished ultramafic soils. This study aimed to establish the response to soil K availability in relation to uptake of K and other elements in the roots and shoots of P. rufuschaneyi and R. cf. bengalensis.Methodology: We undertook an experiment in which soluble K was dosed to ultramafic soil in pots with P. rufuschaneyi and R. cf. bengalensis in Sabah (Malaysia).Results: The results show that root K concentrations increased markedly as the soil K availability increased by 35-fold, whilst the corresponding effect on K accumulation in the shoots of P. rufuschaneyi and R. cf. bengalensis was not significantly different in relation to soil K dosing. Observed divergent responses between root and shoot K accumulation in these species suggests a separate genetic control of K uptake and xylem loading in P. rufuschaneyi and R. cf. bengalensis.Conclusion: The tight control of root-to-shoot K translocation and constrained K accumulation in shoots under a soil K gradient is likely an adaptive mechanism to the evolution of these species to grow in highly nutrient-impoverished ultramafic soils. This study provides information that will be useful for better nutrient management of tropical Ni metal farms that use K-efficient Ni ‘metal crops’.

Abstract: International audience; Termites are key soil bioturbators in tropical ecosystems. Apart from mound nests constructed by some advanced lineages, most of the species use their faeces, oral secretions, debris, or soil aggregates to protect themselves from predators and desiccation when they go out to forage. Although this soil ‘sheeting’ is considered to play a key role in soil functioning, the properties of this termite-made material has been poorly studied. The few available data showed that sheeting properties are highly variable with positive, neutral or negative impacts on soil C and clay content, and consequently on soil aggregate stability. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the factors controlling the physical (particle size fractions and structural stability) and chemical (pH, electrical conductivity and carbon content) properties of soil sheeting produced by termite species encompassing all feeding and building categories using a dataset representative of an important diversity of biotopes coming from 21 countries from all continents colonized by termites. We showed that sheeting properties were explained by the properties of their environment, and especially by those of the bulk soil (linear relationships), followed in a lesser extent by the mean annual precipitation and biotope. Classic hypotheses related to termite feeding and building strategies were not hold by our analysis. However, the distinction of termites into fungus-growing and non-fungus growing species was useful when differentiating the impact of termites on soil electrical conductivity, C content, and structural stability. The large variability observed suggests the need to redefine termite functional groups based on their impacts on soil properties using a trait-based approach from morphological, anatomical and/or physiological traits.

Abstract: L’augmentation de la population urbaine, la demande en produits frais de proximité et le besoin croissant de nature en ville stimulent l’engouement pour l’agriculture urbaine, notamment dans les pays industrialisés. De nouvelles formes émergent, telles que les « micro-fermes urbaines », dont l’activité de production alimentaire est étroitement imbriquée avec des activités de loisir, pédagogiques ou à vocation sociale. Elles sont implantées sur des sols urbains remaniés ou non, d’historique très hétérogène ou sur du bâti, en construisant des sols à partir de matériaux divers, en particulier des déchets organiques de la ville. Alors que les attentes sont fortes vis-à-vis de ces composantes d’une trame verte et des services écosystémiques qu’ils pourraient rendre à la ville, ceux-ci ne sont pas connus et évalués.L’objectif de ce projet est d’évaluer les services écosystémiques rendus par les micro-fermes urbaines, en considérant plusieurs catégories de services : support de biodiversité, approvisionnement, régulation et services culturels, afin d’apporter aux acteurs de la ville des éléments pour une meilleure gestion de cette forme d’agriculture urbaine et de leurs sols.Méthodologie : le projet porte sur six micro-fermes illustrant la diversité de cette forme d’agriculture urbaine de par l’importance relative de la production alimentaire et d’autres activités et le type de sols sur lesquelles elles sont développées, localisées à Paris ou en Petite Couronne, unité territoriale du projet. Il s’appuie sur des compétences variées dans une démarche pluridisciplinaire : pédologues, agronomes, écologues, sociologues et paysagistes, et associe différents acteurs : porteurs de projets de micro-fermes, associations dédiées à la nature en ville et personnels de services d’urbanisme. Les services écosystémiques sont appréhendés par une série d’indicateurs.Résultats attendus : (i) Une identification et une quantification d’indicateurs des services rendus par un ensemble de micro-fermes urbaines. Une démarche d’analyse de ces services ; (ii) l’identification de leviers d’optimisation de ces services, via une pratique culturale : l’apport d’intrants organiques au sol sous forme de produits résiduaires organiques ; (iii) l’identification d’outils relatifs aux états du milieu nécessaires aux porteurs de projet, urbanistes ou collectivités locales, pour un développement de l’agriculture urbaine optimisant les services rendus ; (iv) des échanges et un renforcement de la structuration des acteurs de ces micro-fermes urbaines.Organisation en six lots : Le lot 1, fil rouge du projet, mobilise une diversité d’acteurs de l’agriculture urbaine afin de sélectionner six fermes parmi une présélection réalisée en début de projet et de co-organiser les campagnes de prélèvement et observations. Cet ensemble d’acteurs est ensuite mobilisé pour discuter des résultats obtenus dans les autres lots, identifier les outils nécessaires pour mieux insérer les micro-fermes dans le métabolisme urbain, en minimiser les externalités négatives et en optimiser les services écosystémiques rendus. Cela permettra d’étudier la place actuelle et potentielle des micro-fermes dans des documents d’urbanisme. Le lot 2 est une caractérisation des micro-fermes au plan biophysique et de leurs pratiques. Le lot 3 quantifie et qualifie la biodiversité floristique et tellurique (microorganismes, mésofaune, macrofaune du sol). Le lot 4 est consacré au service d’approvisionnement en aliments, en abordant également leur qualité sanitaire (teneur en ETM et HAP). Le lot 5 quantifie des indicateurs de services de régulation du cycle de l’eau (infiltration et capacité de rétention de l’eau), du climat global (stocks de carbone des sols), du climat local (régulation de la température) et du recyclage des déchets (inventaire des pratiques, de la nature et de l’origine géographique des produits résiduaires organiques utilisés). Le lot 6 est consacré aux services sociaux, culturels et paysagers associés aux micro-fermes en mettant l’accent sur les pratiques et représentations des parties prenantes.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractPurposeUrban soil contamination by heavy metals is one of the foremost challenges for urban soil quality, especially in the urban agriculture context. Urban gardening is a common practice in many industrialized and developing countries. How sources of soil contamination relate to inputs and influence the heavy metal content in soils, however, is not established yet.Materials and methodsThis study aims to assess the potential of pesticide applications (such as Bordeaux mixture) on soil quality. A set of 104 allotment gardens was selected in three cities in France, and topsoil was sampled and analyzed.Results and discussionThe four most abundant metals in urban vegetable garden topsoils were Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cr. The past and/or present industrial and urban activities are not the only cause of the metal contamination in urban vegetable garden soils. Gardens, where pesticides such as the Bordeaux mixture are being used showed significantly higher total Cu values in soils (78 mg kg−1 compared with 49 mg kg−1 for untreated gardens).ConclusionsEven though the risk of metal contamination through vegetable consumption is usually considered low, we clearly identified indicators of anthropogenic Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn pollution due to pesticides inputs. This link was particularly strong between the use of Bordeaux mixture and increases Cu levels.

Abstract: Background and Aims The aim of this study was to test the frequency distributions of foliar elements from a large dataset from Kinabalu Park (Sabah, Malaysia) for departure from unimodality, indicative of a distinct ecophysiological response associated with hyperaccumulation. Methods We collected foliar samples (n = 1533) comprising 90 families, 198 genera and 495 plant species from ultramafic soils, further foliar samples (n = 177) comprising 45 families, 80 genera and 120 species from non-ultramafic soils and corresponding soil samples (n = 393 from ultramafic soils and n = 66 from non-ultramafic soils) from Kinabalu Park (Sabah, Malaysia). The data were geographically (Kinabalu Park) and edaphically (ultramafic soils) constrained. The inclusion of a relatively high proportion (approx. 14 %) of samples from hyperaccumulator species [with foliar concentrations of aluminium and nickel (Ni) >1000 μg g–1, cobalt, copper, chromium and zinc >300 μg g–1 or manganese (Mn) >10 mg g–1] allowed for hypothesis testing. Key Results Frequency distribution graphs for most elements [calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and phosphorus (P)] were unimodal, although some were skewed left (Mg and Mn). The Ni frequency distribution was bimodal and the separation point for the two modes was between 250 and 850 μg g–1. Conclusions Accounting for statistical probability, the established empirical threshold value (>1000 μg g–1) remains appropriate. The two discrete modes for Ni indicate ecophysiologically distinct behaviour in plants growing in similar soils. This response is in contrast to Mn, which forms the tail of a continuous (approximately log-normal) distribution, suggestive of an extension of normal physiological processes.

Abstract: AimsMetal hyperaccumulation is a rare phenomenon described for an increasing number of plant taxa. In this study we investigated the root growth responses of the well-known nickel, zinc, cadmium hyperaccumulatorNoccaea caerulescensand of the metal tolerant (non-accumulator)Stellaria media, in order to observe root foraging vs avoidance responses to nickel. MethodsTo allow for observations of root growth and foraging preferences, two accessions ofNoccaea caerulescensand two accessions ofStellaria mediaorginating from high nickel and low nickel habitats were grown in rhizotrons with localized nickel enrichment.ResultsThe root density in the control and nickel-enriched soil areas in the rhizotrons with differentN. caerulescensaccessions had distinct responses: moderate nickel avoidance was recorded for the non-nickel accession, while a clear foraging response was observed inN. caerulescensfrom the nickel accession. In contrast, nickel rooting avoidance was observed for bothS. mediaaccessions and was more pronounced in the non-nickel accession.ConclusionsThis study shows thatN. caerulescensoriginating from different accessions responded differently to soil nickel enrichment, with the nickel accession ofN. caerulescensactively foraging for nickel, suggesting a physiological adaptation and demand for this metal. In contrast, a clear nickel avoidance response by a metal tolerant species, S. media, was observed in this study, a phenomenon which has not been previously described; this suggests that root avoidance responses might play a role in the adaptation of metal tolerant species to Ni-rich soils.

Abstract: Background: Phytoextraction is an in situ technique that can be applied to minerals and mining wastes using hyperaccumulator plants to purposely bio-concentrate high levels of metals or metalloids into their shoots in order to remove them from the substrate, while achieving monetary gain. Phytoextraction can be applied to a limited number of elements depending on the existence of hyperaccumulator plants with suitable characteristics. Although phytoextraction has been trialled in experimental settings, it requires testing at field scale to assess commercial broad-scale potential. Scope: The novelty and purported environmental benefits of phytoextraction have attracted substantial scientific inquiry. The main limitation of phytoextraction with hyperaccumulators is the number of suitable plants with a high accumulation capacity for a target element. We outline the main considerations for applying phytoextraction using selected elemental case studies in which key characteristics of the element, hyperaccumulation and economic considerations are evaluated. Conclusions: The metals cobalt, cadmium, thallium and rhenium and the metalloids arsenic and selenium are present in many types of minerals wastes, especially base metal mining tailings, at concentrations amenable for economic phytoextraction. Phytoextraction should focus on the most toxic elements (arsenic, cadmium, and thallium) or especially valuable elements (selenium, cobalt, and rhenium). The value proposition is in the clean-up of contaminated land in the case of toxic elements, whereas it is in the ‘bio-ore’ generated by the process in the case of valuable elements.

Abstract: The flora of Papua New Guinea is amongst the richest in the world with an estimated 25,000 plant species. The extreme levels of biodiversity, climatic ranges and soil types suggest a high possibility of metal hyperaccumulator plants existing in Papua New Guinea. However, no hyperaccumulator plants have been reported from this region yet. The use of handheld X-ray fluorescence instruments is a non-destructive and effective method for the systematic quantitative assessment of hyperaccumulation in vast numbers of herbarium specimens. X-ray fluorescence scanning was undertaken at the Queensland Herbarium (Australia) on all Papua New Guinea specimens from seven major families (Celastraceae, Cunoniaceae, Phyllanthaceae, Proteaceae, Rubiaceae, Salicaceae and Violaceae), covering 3164 plant specimens. This preliminary survey revealed the existence of ten zinc hyperaccumulator species (> 3000 µg g−1 Zn), eight manganese accumulator species (> 5000 µg g−1 Mn) and one nickel hyperaccumulator species (> 1000 µg g−1 Ni). These results highlight the potential for discovery of numerous new metal hyperaccumulator plants from the flora of Papua New Guinea if larger-scale systematic screening efforts were undertaken.

Abstract: Aims: Nickel hyperaccumulator plants require highly evolved mechanisms to avoid cellular-level toxicity to cope with the high prevailing concentrations of nickel in their seeds and seedlings. This study aimed to investigate tissue-level distribution and redistribution of Ni and other physiologically relevant elements during the germination of hyperaccumulator plants. Methods : Berkheya coddii Roessler (Asteraceae) and Odontarrhena muralis sensu latu (Waldst. & Kit.) Endl. (O. chalcidica), formerly Alyssum murale (Waldst. & Kit.) (Brassicaceae), were germinated for several days at room temperature before using synchrotron micro X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (µXRF) to obtain high-sensitivity and high-resolution elemental images of live/hydrated plants at various stages of seed germination and seedling growth. Results: The results show that fruits and seeds of both species were highly enriched in nickel. In Berkheya coddii, nickel was located in the cotyledons, the micropylar area, the seed coat, and the point of attachment of the pappus with the cypsela body. In Odontarrhena muralis seeds, nickel occurred in the cotyledons and hypocotyl. The emergence of true leaves initiates nickel and calcium redistribution within seedlings in both species. Conclusions: The diversity in physiological responses to nickel in Berkheya coddii and Odontarrhena muralis does not only occur at the mature stage, but is inherent to both species as seed elemental storage and tolerance mechanisms during seedling development differ.

Abstract: Plant and soil 475(1-2), 515 - 534 (2022). doi:10.1007/s11104-022-05388-3, PurposeThe Cunoniaceae are a major component of the New Caledonian flora with 91 endemic species that are highly unusual in that multiple metals are hyperaccumulated in different species. This makes it an ideal model system for studying the nature of the hyperaccumulation phenomenon.MethodsX-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) scanning of all herbarium collections of the Cunoniaceae was undertaken at the Herbarium of New Caledonia to reveal incidences of nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn) accumulation. Following on, the Mn hyperaccumulating P. reticulata and the Ni hyperaccumulating P. xaragurensis were selected for detailed follow-up investigations using synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM).ResultsThe systematic XRF screening of herbarium specimens showed that numerous species have high foliar Mn and Ni with species either accumulating Ni or Mn, but not both elements simultaneously. Soil ‘extractable’ Mn and Ni concentrations associated with Pancheria reticulata and P. xaragurensis greatly varies between the species. The XFM data shows that P. reticulata has a distinctive distribution pattern with Mn concentrated in large hypodermal cells. Abstract: The extend of biogeochemical cycling of nickel (Ni) by tropical hyperaccumulator plants in their native habitat is largely unknown, although these unusual plants are suspected to play a major role in the recycling of this element in ultramafic ecosystems. In this study, we have assessed the biogeochemical cycling of Ni (and other elements, including mineral nutrients) by a tropical Ni hyperaccumulator plant, i.e., Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi, which is one of the most promising species for tropical Ni agromining. The study site was a young secondary forest in Sabah (Malaysia) where Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi occurs as the dominant species on an ultramafic Cambisol. For 2 years, we monitored a 100-m2 plot and collected information on weather, biomass increase, soil fertility, water fluxes to the soil and litter fluxes for a wide range of elements, including Ni. The Ni cycle is mainly driven by internal fluxes, notably the degradation and recycling of Ni-rich litter. Over the period of investigation, the Ni litter flux corresponded to the total Ni stock of the litter (5.2 g m−2 year−1). The results further show that Ni turnover varies significantly with the accumulation properties of the plant cover. This points to the major influence of Ni hyperaccumulator plants in building up Ni available stocks in the topsoils, as has also been shown in temperate ultramafic systems. Litterfall and throughfall contribute substantially to the cycling of phosphorus, sulphur and potassium in this ecosystem, with throughfall contributing 2-, 220- and 20-fold higher to the respective nutrient fluxes relative to litterfall. The magnesium:calcium ratio far exceeded 1 in the soil, but was < 1 in the leaves of Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi. The insights from this study should be taken into account when designing tropical agromining operations; as Ni stocks could be more labile than initially thought. The removal of Ni- and nutrients-rich biomass will likely affect available Ni (and major nutrients) for the next cropping seasons, and requires sustainable fertilisation, to be utilized to replenish depleted major nutrients. These findings also have major ecological implications.

Abstract: International audience; There is increasing demand for data on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock (SSOC; kgC m−2), but the acquisition of such data, which relies on the determination of volumetric SOC content (SOCv; gC dm−3), is often tedious or complex. Visible and near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VNIRS) has proven useful for soil characterization, but has rarely been used for direct prediction of SOCv. The objectives of this work were: (i) to compare SOCv predictions using VNIR spectra collected in situ vs. on 2-mm sieved air-dried soil (laboratory conditions), on three sample sets separately (with in situ spectra collected differently for each set); and (ii) to assess SOCv prediction in independent validation using laboratory spectra from all sets.Predictions of SOCv were more accurate using laboratory than in situ spectra for two sets, but not for the third set, where coarse particles content was rather high and variable. Considering the total set of laboratory spectra, predictions in independent validation (leave-one-site-out) yielded accurate SOCv and SSOC predictions (standard errors of prediction were 1.9 gC dm−3 and 0.36 kgC m−2 at 0–30 cm depth, respectively). This result was achieved using local partial least squares regression (PLSR), based on spectral neighbors, which noticeably outperformed global PLSR (which uses all calibration samples equally), as often reported when using large soil spectral libraries for independent validation.Finally, this work demonstrated that SSOC could be quantified accurately using a VNIRS library built on archive soil samples, which offers important perspectives for SSOC accounting.

Abstract: International audience; The global water demand for industrial, agricultural, and drinking water needs increases but so is the number of soil and groundwater contaminations. Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPLs) which come from the accidental release of refined petroleum products (diesel or fuel…) represent 40% of these contaminations. After their infiltration in the unsaturated zone, part of LNAPLs reaches and accumulates above the top of the water table as a mobile liquid phase able to be displaced by water table level variations. Hence, pump-induced, or seasonal variations in the groundwater level led to the significant vertical spreading of these light petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants at the capillary fringe that can temporarily favor their release into the air and groundwater. In the coming decades, an intensification of these groundwater level variations is expected in response to extreme climatic events and variations in precipitations patterns and water needs. This context may strongly impact the mobilization of these organic contaminants, impacting their release in the air and water and their attenuation rates. It is, therefore, essential to better understand the impact of the groundwater level fluctuation patterns on the fate of LNAPLs. To this end, an innovative system was developed this year at the GISFI station (Homécourt, France - http://gisfi.univ-lorraine.fr). This device is composed of two lysimetric columns of soil equipped with in-situ sensors that combine indirect geophysical (complex electrical conductivity, permittivity), physical-chemical (pH, Eh, temperature), and geochemical measurements. This device allows to assess and compare the evolution of the LNAPL saturation distribution in soil, the nature and the amount of LNAPLs release into the air and groundwater during two groundwater level fluctuations and precipitation scenarios of 14 months: one based on the current rainfall and groundwater fluctuation patterns calculated after the last ten years regional climate records; the other based on the most extreme predictions of IPCC climatic models. The remobilized hydrocarbons will be collected from lysimeters via suction cups (dissolved phase) and gas collection chambers (vapor phase) and regularly analyzed (µGC, GC-MS, FTIR) using the analysis protocol established in the laboratory for these pollutants. To prepare these experiments, laboratory tests are also conducted on laboratory decametric columns and 2D tanks of soil under controlled soil saturation of air/LNAPL, water/LNAPL, and air/water to calibrate the signals of in-situ sensors. The complementarity of these monitoring techniques should provide a better understanding of the current and future behavior of these organic pollutants and the evolution of the associated environmental risks (water/air quality) at contaminated sites under various climatic conditions. Preliminary results concerning the migration of the pollution through the unsaturated zone of the columns after their release will be presented to illustrate the capability of this new instrumental system.

When they infiltrate through the unsaturated zone, part of the LNAPLs remains trapped by capillary forces. The others accumulate above the top of the water table, forming a floating ‘free’ phase able to generate a long-term dissolved LNAPL plume. Seasonal variations in the groundwater level lead to significant vertical dispersion of these contaminants at the capillary fringe, favoring their release into the air and water. The IPCC predicts an intensification of these groundwater level variations over the next century in response to variations in rainfall intensity and frequency (related to climate change) and the increasing use of water resources. This context may strongly impact the LNAPL remobilization. It is, therefore, essential to better understand the impact of these groundwater level fluctuations on the remobilization processes of these hydrocarbon contaminants. To this end, an original experimental system combining indirect geophysical (electrical conductivity), in situ physical-chemical (pH, Eh, temperature), and geochemical measurements was developed at the GISFI station (Homécourt, France). This device allows the assessment and the comparison of nature and the amount of LNAPLs release into the atmosphere and water from a contaminated soil during two groundwater level fluctuations scenarios: one corresponding to the ‘actual’ rainfall pattern based on regional climate records; the other based on the most extreme IPCC scenario. This study will be conducted at different scales (laboratory decametric columns and 2 m3 lysimeters) and on soils of different geological complexity. The remobilized hydrocarbons will be collected via porous candles and gas collection chambers and regularly analyzed (GC-MS, FTIR). The complementarity of the monitoring methods will be evaluated and numerical simulations of the LNAPL flow and transport through the contaminated soil will be carried out to identify the processes responsible for the pollutant remobilization. Abstract: Evaluation of various mechanisms of Cd2+ and Zn2+ root uptake through modelling, including interactions with Fe uptake. Four increasingly complex models were developed and tested against measured uptake by the hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens grown on three contaminated soils. Model 1 formalises root uptake of free hydrated ions only, to which the dissociation of soil-borne metal complexes was added in Model 2, together with the root uptake of these complexes through the Fe pathway in Model 3. Model 4 represents Strategy I for Fe uptake, with Cd2+ and Zn2+ complexed by a root organic exudate hijacking the Fe adsorption/reduction pathway. Model 1 enables a good prediction of Cd and Zn uptake in acidic or neutral soils. In contrast, the high Cd uptake in the alkaline soil cannot be reached either by simulating additionnally the dissociation of Cd complexes with soil-borne ligands (Model 2), nor by replicating their uptake through the Fe pathway (Model 3). These results suggest that the plant increases the Cd availability in alkaline soil during the uptake process. Supporting this idea, the uptake of Cd desorbed from iron hydroxide and calcium carbonate by root exuded ligands for Fe acquisition (simulated in Model 4) can explain the high Cd uptake from alkaline soil. In acid soils, Cd and Zn uptake can be predicted from their free hydrated concentrations, while in calcareous soils with very low concentrations of free hydrated ions, root exudation for Fe acquisition could make other soil Cd species phytoavailable.

Abstract: International audience; Three-dimensional (3D) printing in soil science is relatively rare but offers promising directions for research. Having 3D-printed soil samples will help academics and researchers conduct experiments in a reproducible and participatory research network and gain a better understanding of the studied soil parameters. One of the most important challenges in utilizing 3D printing techniques for soil modeling is the manufacturing of a soil structure. Until now, the most widespread method for printing porous soil structures is based on scanning a real sample via X-ray tomography. The aim of this paper is to design a porous soil structure based on mathematical models rather than on samples themselves. This can allow soil scientists to design and parameterize their samples according to their desired experiments. An open-source toolchain is developed using a Lua script, in the IceSL slicer, with graphical user interface to enable researchers to create and configure their digital soil models, called monoliths, without using meshing algorithms or STL files which reduce the resolution of the model. Examples of monoliths are 3D-printed in polylactic acid using fused filament fabrication technology with a layer thickness of 0.20, 0.12, and 0.08 mm. The images generated from the digital model slicing are analyzed using open-source ImageJ software to obtain information about internal geometrical shape, porosity, tortuosity, grain size distribution, and hydraulic conductivities. The results show that the developed script enables designing reproducible numerical models that imitate soil structures with defined pore and grain sizes in a range between coarse sand (from 1 mm diameter) to fine gravel (up to 12 mm diameter).

Abstract: International audience; Ecological engineering of degraded ecosystems often manipulates plants, with positive outcomes for their restoration or ecosystem services production. The importance of soil biota for successional plant communities has prompted consideration of direct inoculation (active) or attraction (passive) of soil organisms as a relevant restoration strategy. However, few attempts have manipulated soil invertebrates as part of nature based solutions for ecosystem restoration, despite their major role in many soil ecological processes and in plant-soil feedback processes. In addition, while ecological restoration and ecological engineering approaches successfully incorporate plant traits, soil invertebrate traits remain underused. Exploiting the functional diversity of soil communities by adopting a trait-based approach could enhance restoration of soil chemical, biological and physical properties. Here, we conduct a narrative review and identify a set of soil invertebrate functional traits with great potential in ecosystem restoration. We focus on traits related to four main ecological functions that are often at the core of restoration plans: nutrient cycling and carbon cycling, pollutant detoxification, soil structure arrangement, and biological control agent by prey/pest regulation. This paper further proposes guidelines for stakeholders that need to be addressed to successfully integrate soil organism traits into ecological engineering. Finally, we highlight main knowledge gaps and limitations currently impeding the use of soil invertebrate traits in ecological engineering, and identify avenues for future research. We especially bring out (i) that few studies still use soil invertebrates in restoration, so even fewer are based on traits, (ii) a lack of data about soil invertebrate species role in ecosystems, (iii) a lack of data about attributes from specific traits and groups in existing soil functional trait databases, (iv) the complex relationships between functions and traits and (v) that future studies are needed to demonstrate the benefits of such trait-based approaches compared to approaches relying on emblematic species.

Abstract: Rhizodegradation is the breakdown of organic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using plants and rhizospheric microorganisms. The influence of two phytoremediating plants, Miscanthus × giganteus (M × G) and Trifolium repens L., was studied on a PAH-contaminated technosol composed of soil and sediments. More specifically, microbial density and diversity were studied along with the density of the population of PAH-degrading bacteria. M × G and white clover were tested in mono- and co-culture on the technosol in a mesocosm over 263 days (life cycle of M × G until its senescence). At the beginning and the end of the phytoremediation experiment, microbial density was measured by real-time PCR, targeting bacteria (16S rDNA), fungi (18S rDNA), and PAH-degrading bacteria (PAH-RHDα GP). Bacterial and fungal diversity were determined by metagenomic analysis. The M × G monoculture appeared to increase bacterial diversity compared to non-planted technosol, in contrast to other planting patterns, while fungal diversity appeared to decrease in the presence of any of the plants. Overall, the plants increased the bacterial density in the technosol, while only white clover and the co-culture increased the fungal density, with the latter having a greater impact. Concerning the degrading bacteria, only the co-culture stimulated the PAH-degrading bacterial population. This is remarkable for the PAH rhizodegradation. Even though the co-culture seemed to decrease the microbial diversity in the technosol, this condition was the most interesting with respect to the increase of the bacterial and fungal density as well as the enhancement of the PAH-degrading bacteria in the technosol.

Abstract: International audience; Despite its importance for human activities, soil biodiversity remains largely unknown. This gap of knowledge is a strong limit for studies including it such as in the agricultural field. Particularly, in France, no large-scale monitoring of soil biodiversity exist for the moment except for microorganisms (bacteria and fungi). Aware to this need, with the support of OFB, we studied the feasibility to add a soil biodiversity survey (RMQS-Biodiversity) to the already existing French soil quality monitoring network (RMQS). It is a systemic monitoring based on a 16*16 km grid where the sampling is done on a plot at the center of the mesh, which could belong to different land use types (forest, crops, urban gardens and wastelands, vines, orchards, pastures, meadows and other natural habitats). The sampling occurs throughout the year, every 15 years since 2000. The advantages to lean the new survey on an already existing one compared to establish an independent survey are that 1) field teams are already operational, 2) it reduces costs and 3) different data types (in our case, with pedologic and management practices ones) can be crossed at the country scale with a high statistical power to infer spatial and temporal variations and drivers. The objective of this new monitoring is to cover almost the whole soil biodiversity. With this aim, we gathered experts on soil microflora, microfauna, mesofauna and macrofauna and soil functions. We ask them if the RMQS sampling strategy could fit with a soil biodiversity survey. We together choose the taxons and functions to be surveyed, the associated protocols and estimate the related financial, material and human needs. According to the experts, the sampling design of RMQS fits with a soil biodiversity survey. We select sampling protocols for i) bacteria and fungi, ii) protists, iii) nematodes, iv) mesofauna (particularly springtails), v) below-ground macrofauna (earthworms), vi) surface macrofauna (beetles and spiders), and considering functions, vii) soil porosity, viii) enzymatic activity and ix) organic matter degradation. Before starting at National scale, we tested on several sites the selected sampling protocols and various sampling strategies in order to optimize the temporal sequence, the spatial arrangement of the protocols, the time spent on the field and to reduce the effect of disturbances on the soil organisms. The RMQS-biodiversity is a promising project that will help to fill the knowledge gap of soil biodiversity in France. The data would be used to assess the distribution of soil organisms and monitor the changes in soil biodiversity at the scale of the French territory. In addition, coupling data provided by biodiversity survey with data from RMQS will allow deciphering links between biodiversity, physical-chemical characteristics of the soil and human activities (practices, heavy metal loading, and pesticide residues for instance). Moreover, the RMQS-Biodiversity could serve as a model for other countries to establish a large-scale integrative soil monitoring including both pedologic and biodiversity data.

Abstract: International audience; The exploitation of ion-adsorption rare earth elements (REEs) deposits in Southern China has generatedsignificant environmental damage. These deposits, which represented 30% of worldwide production in 2017, were traditionally mined by heap leaching using ammonium sulfate, leading to contamination of surrounding streams and agricultural soils. Reclamation of the resulting mine tailings is limited by the poor physical conditions of the tailings, their low organic matter and nutrient levels as well as their high residual REEs content. Reclamation practices of such sites can include natural attenuation or phytoremediation, using soil amendment or construction, and planting of various species. These practices induce drastic changes in the biogeochemical conditions of the soils and thus potentially modify REEs and nutrients availability, affecting the sustainability of the reclamation.To gain understanding on the impact of reclamation practices on REEs dynamics, we study a mine tailing site in Ganzhou city, Jiangxi province (116 km²), that has been abandoned for 10y. Experimental plots (2x2m) were installed on the top of the tailings to monitor plants and soil development over time and evaluate different phytoremediation techniques: phytostabilization using perennial grasses or fiber plants, and phytoextraction using REEs hyperaccumulators. Understanding REEs fate and bioavailability requires knowledge of the speciation of REEs in the tailings. Size fractionation and elemental analysis showed that REEs are concentrated in the fine fraction of the material. X-ray microprobe analyses at SSRL synchrotron identified Ce mostly present as Ce4+, but Ce3+ was evidenced in co-localization with other REEs on several occurences in topsoil sample.To evaluate the different reclamation practices, we developed a geochemical model describing REEs speciation in these materials. A process-based multi-surface model was parametrized for REEs surface complexation in soils in the platform ORCHESTRA. Based on measured contents of REEs, clays and Al/Fe-(hydr)oxides and solution pH and DOC concentration, we predicted dissolved REEs concentrations in pore water and CaCl2-extract. The model is evaluated by comparing modelled vs. measured REEs solid:solution partitioning in different plots. Results show the primordial influence of both pH and organic content in speciation and partitioning of REEs.

Abstract: International audience; Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) raises growing interest in phytomanagement because it commonly grows under poplar Short Rotation Coppices (SRC) set up at trace-metal (TM) contaminated sites and provides high-quality herbaceous fibres. The mycobiome of this non-mycorhizal plant and its capacity to adapt to TM-contaminated environments remains unknown. This study aimed at characterizing the mycobiome associated with nettle and poplar roots co-occurring at a TM-contaminated site. Plant root barcoding using the fungi-specific ITS1F-ITS2 primers and Illumina MiSeq technology revealed that nettle and poplar had distinct root fungal communities. The nettle mycobiome was dominated by Pezizomycetes from known endophytic taxa and from the supposedly saprotrophic genus Kotlabaea (which was the most abundant). Several ectomycorrhizal fungi such as Inocybe (Agaricomycetes) and Tuber (Pezizomycetes) species were associated with the poplar roots. Most of the Pezizomycetes taxa were present in the highly TM-contaminated area whereas Agaricomycetes tended to be reduced. Despite being a known non-mycorrhizal plant, nettle was associated with a significant proportion of ectomycorrhizal OTU (9.7%), suggesting some connexions between the poplar and the nettle root mycobiomes. Finally, our study raised the interest in reconsidering the fungal networking beyond known mycorrhizal interactions.

Abstract: International audience; Aims: The agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ had not yet been tested until a recent pot trial was undertaken to test the growth and nickel (Ni) yield of two promising Ni ‘metal crops’ (Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi and Rinorea cf. bengalensis) from Sabah, Malaysia. The present study investigates the growth and Ni yield in P. rufuschaneyi in response to inorganic and organic fertilisation under field conditions.Methods: A two-year field experiment was undertaken on an ultramafic Cambisol in Sabah. Two experiments were set up with different types of fertilisers, either organic or inorganic. Ten 9-m2 plots were amended with either NPK (370 kg ha−1) or N (120 kg ha−1) fertilisation and were monitored during the first year. Another experiment with 25-m2 plots was set up to test three treatments of organic amendment (0, 1 or 2 kg m−2 of shredded P. rufuschaneyi biomass).Results: The results show that despite considerable variability, Ni concentration was generally lower in plant shoots amended with N only (i.e. urea). However, treatments showed no statistical effect on plant biomass and Ni yield in the short-term, even though organic treatments had a strong positive effect on the availability of Ni.Conclusion: The short-term effects of inorganic and organic treatments on Ni yield of the tropical ‘metal crop’ Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi were not apparent (75 kg Ni ha−1 yr−1). The field trials are ongoing to assess long-term effects. The preliminary results suggest that with appropriate agronomic systems and plant breeding, the Ni yield could be substantially increased.

Abstract: International audience; Collembola have been proposed for several decades as a good model organisms to survey soil biodiversity; but most of the studies focused on taxonomic endpoints. The main objectives of this study are to compare the effects of the different land uses, including urban and industrial land uses, while using both collembolan functional and taxonomic biodiversity approaches. We collected data on 3,056 samples of Collembola communities across 758 sites in various land uses throughout France. The types of land use considered included all types of human activity from forestry to urban, industrial, traffic, mining and military areas, agricultural grassland, arable land, vineyards and urban vegetable gardens. In order to study functional and taxonomic biodiversity, we used community-weighted means, functional indices, species richness and density. When looking at collembolan functional diversity, urban and industrial soils appear clearly less diversified than when considering the taxonomic diversity. We suspect here a functional homogenization effect commonly reported in the literature for various organisms in urban ecosystems. Our study provides range of values for different taxonomic and functional indices of Collembola communities in a wide land use classification across France.

Abstract: Phytoextraction using hyperaccumulating plants is a method for the remediation of soils contaminated with trace elements (TEs). As a strategy for improvement, the concept of fungal-assisted phytoextraction has emerged in the last decade. However, the role played by fungal endophytes of hyperaccumulating plants in phytoextraction is poorly studied. Here, fungal endophytes isolated from calamine or non-metalliferous populations of the Cd/Zn hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens were tested for their growth promotion abilities affecting the host plant. Plants were inoculated with seven different isolates and grown for 2 months in trace element (TE)-contaminated soil. The outcomes of the interactions between N. caerulescens and its native strains ranged from neutral to beneficial. Among the strains, Alternaria thlaspis and Metapochonia rubescens, respectively, isolated from the roots of a non-metallicolous and a calamine population of N. caerulescens, respectively, exhibited the most promising abilities to enhance the Zn phytoextraction potential of N. caerulescens related to a significant increase of the plant biomass. These strains significantly increased the root elemental composition, particularly in the case of K, P, and S, suggesting an improvement of the plant nutrition. Results obtained in this study provide new insights into the relevance of microbial-assisted phytoextraction approaches in the case of hyperaccumulating plants.

Abstract: International audience; Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are essential components of many high-tech products. In industrial materials, REEs come at 90% from Southern China ion-adsorption deposits, from which they are recovered by heap leaching using ammonium sulfate. Such large-scale process leads to severe environmental damage, and produces large tailings. Elucidating the nature of REE-bearing phases in these mine tailings is critical for predicting REE dynamics and designing a successful sustainable reclamation strategy, phyto-stabilization being currently tested.First investigations on the tailings soils revealed their high heterogeneous mineral composition, supporting the need for micro-scale investigation. XRD and TEM-EDXS identified quartz, K-feldspars and kaolinite as major phases, and optical microscope observations evidenced Fe-rich weathered layers surrounding particles, as well as organic material that might play a role in REEs distribution.X-ray spectromicroscopy analyses of soil thin sections (bare and planted) were performed at SSRL (beamline 2-3) and SOLEIL (LUCIA). We targeted the most concentrated REEs in the bulk soil, i.e., La, Ce and Nd. Overlaps in the fluorescence lines of REEs and transition metals (Ba, Ti) obliged us to perform fitting of the fluorescence signal in each pixel of the maps. Then, µXANES spectra at REE L-edges were collected to confirm the presence of REEs. The use of µXANES allowed us to detect very low quantities of REEs that were not detectable in global fluorescence maps. The combination of spectromicroscopy and fluorescence mapping was crucial and powerful to detect low levels of REEs in heterogeneous material.We evidenced the co-localization of REEs with Fe oxides, and, in reclaimed and vegetated samples, with roots. The high number of measurements performed on LUCIA beamline showed us that Ce speciation was predominantly Ce4+ when not accompanied by others REEs. In contrast, Ce3+ is systematically associated with Nd3+ and La3+.This work is, to our knowledge, the first to address REE distribution and speciation in soils. It provides significantly enhanced understanding of processes governing REE behaviour in mine tailings and will help designing successful reclamation techniques of contaminated land. It will contribute to validate process-based geochemical models describing REE behaviour, allowing to predict REE fate with ongoing reclamation.

Abstract: International audience; The terrestrial fern Pityrogramma calomelanos, a cosmopolitan tropical species, is one of the strongest known arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator plants. This study aimed to determine whether P. calomelanos preferentially forages for arsenite (As3+) or arsenate (As5+) in As-contaminated soils, and whether a positive root response to As enhances accumulation in P. calomelanos. Therefore, an experiment using rhizoboxes divided in two halves were constructed with a control soil (C) and As3+ or As5+ dosed soil at either 50 and 100 μg g-1 As. Micro-X-ray Fluorescence elemental mapping (μXRF) was employed to analyze the distribution of As in roots and fronds, and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to determine As distribution in the reproductive tissues of P. calomelanos. The results showed that Pityrogramma roots do not specifically forage for As-contaminated soil; the area based on pixel counts was similar across all the treatments with no statistical differences. However, frond biomass was slightly higher in the treatments C ǀ As3+ and C ǀ As5+, and the highest accumulation of As in fronds was in the As5+ ǀ As3+ (100 μg g-1) treatment, with 3418 and 2370 μg g-1 in old and young fronds respectively. Arsenic cycling across the roots was observed by the μXRF mapping; in C ǀ As5+ (100) the As was higher and evenly distributed in both sections, whilst in C ǀ As3+ (50), the As was higher in the As3+ side. The μXRF mapping showed a broader As distribution in older fronds, where As was highest in the rachis and extended into the pinnule through the midrib. Pityrogramma calomelanos does not specifically root forage for As-enriched zones in the soil and grows healthily without signs of toxicity at lower (50 μg g-1) and higher (100 μg g-1) concentrations of As3+ and As5+ in the soil.

Abstract: International audience; A unified framework for simulating various transport processes in the environment is presented. It consists in a single set of partial differential equations. The main feature of this model framework is its exchange layer, which allows to treat several types of transfer between the soil and the surface water. The model framework equations, termed transfer equations, is shown to reproduce three independently-published models developed for soil erosion, river bedload, and chemical transport respectively. By allowing the different processes to be represented within a single model framework, the transfer equations are therefore unifying the representation of particles and chemical fluxes in the environment. The transfer equations are implemented into the open-source software FullSWOF_1D. The code is verified against the approximation of an exact solution, assuring its proper functioning. A good adequacy is found between our numerical results and those published in the literature, attesting the capability of the transfer equations to unify modeling of soil erosion, river bedload, and chemical transport. Hence, the transfer equations can decrease the number of models to be used for simulating transfer of materials in the environment, and limit the number of computer codes to be developed and maintained. The transfer equations could also help in drawing parallels between different fields of hydrology.

Abstract: International audience; Purpose: This work is a quantitative evaluation of current hypotheses of iron acquisition by higher plants. Methods: The outputs of three root uptake models were compared to the iron uptake of a single plant species grown in three different soils. Iron hydroxide dissolution kinetics by organic ligands were formalised in the reactive transport modelling, together with ligand and ferric complex degradation. A global sensitivity analysis was performed. Results: Iron uptake by Noccaea caerulescens does not appear to differ from that of other higher plants. The solubility of soil iron hydroxides alone cannot satisfy the plant iron requirements, even in an acidified rhizosphere. For this reason, all plants growing in aerated soils should suffer extreme iron deficiencies, not only those in alkaline soils. The dissociation rate of an Fe3+ complex (for instance with an aminopolycarboxilate ligand) in solution near the root cell membrane is not sufficient to provide the metal needed by the plant. In contrast, the adsorption of the ferric complex on the root cell membrane, before Fe3+ reduction and the absorption of Fe2+ appears to be a very efficient process. This is also the case for iron acquisition through the root secretion of an iron organic ligand dissolving soil iron hydroxides, the rate of ligand excretion being a key parameter. Conclusions: Mechanistic modelling supports the hypothesis of the reduction at the root cell membrane of a ferric complex resulting of iron hydroxide dissolution by a soil- or root-borne organic ligand.

Abstract: The consumption of vegetables grown on soils polluted by trace elements can cause a serious threat for animal and human health and disturb the functioning of the ecosystem. The aim of this work is to determine the concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, and Zn in soils and different vegetables from market gardens of urban areas in Marrakech city in order to investigate human health risk through ingestion of contaminated vegetables. Plant transfer factor (TF), daily intake of metals (DIM), and health risk index (HRI) were calculated. The concentrations of all metals studied in the garden top soils were within the threshold values. The Cu, Zn, Co, Mn, and As concentration in the edible parts of vegetables were within the safe limits. However, Cd and Pb in Malva parviflora and Cd in Brassica rapa, and Cr and Ni in Coriandrum sativum exceeded their permissible limits. The TF for these nine metals varied between 0.01 and 1.35. The classification of TEs according to their TF is as follows: Cu > Zn > Cd > Ni > Cr > Pb > Mn > Co > As. The maximum value was recorded in Coriandrum sativum while the minimum value was recorded in Cynara cardunculus. The HRI values were within the safe limit (

Abstract: International audience; Ultramafic soils are usually marginal in macronutrients (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and calcium (Ca)) for growth of crop plants. Commercial nickel (Ni) agromining is dependent on attaining high yield and high Ni concentration in harvestable biomass of Ni hyperaccumulator species. We previously reported on the biomass responses of two promising tropical ‘metal crops’ (Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi and Rinorea cf. bengalensis) to rates of N, P, and K fertilisers. Calcium, sulphur (S) and organic matter amendments have varied effects on the biomass production and Ni uptake in temperate Ni hyperaccumulator species used in agromining, but the trends in tropical ‘metal crops’ are not reported to-date. We investigated the effects of these amendments on the growth performance and the Ni (and other elements) uptake in P. rufuschaneyi and R. cf. bengalensis The experiments consisted of a large 12-month randomised growth trial in large pots in Sabah (Malaysia) using ultramafic soils under different treatment levels of soluble Ca and S, and organic matter amendments.
