The Moon and its surrounding cislunar space have numerous unknowns, uncertainties, or partially charted phenomena that need to be investigated to determine the extent to which they affect cislunar communication. These include temperature fluctuations, spacecraft distance and velocity dynamics, surface roughness, and the diversity of propagation mechanisms. To develop robust and dynamically operative Cislunar space networks (CSNs), we need to analyze the communication system by incorporating inclusive models that account for the wide range of possible propagation environments and noise characteristics. In this paper, we consider that the communication signal can be subjected to both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise, but also to different fading conditions. First, we analyze the communication link by showing the relationship between the brightness temperatures of the Moon and the equivalent noise temperature at the receiver of the Lunar Gateway. We propose to analyze the ergodic capacity and the outage probability, as they are essential metrics for the development of reliable communication. In particular, we model the noise with the additive symmetric alpha-stable distribution, which allows a generic analysis for Gaussian and non-Gaussian signal characteristics. Then, we present the closed-form bounds for the ergodic capacity and the outage probability. Finally, the results show the theoretically and operationally achievable performance bounds for the cislunar communication. To give insight into further designs, we also provide our results with comprehensive system settings that include mission objectives as well as orbital and system dynamics.

The rise in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite Internet services has led to increasing demand, often exceeding available data rates and compromising the quality of service. While deploying more satellites offers a short-term fix, designing higher-performance satellites with enhanced transmission capabilities provides a more sustainable solution. Achieving the necessary high capacity requires interconnecting multiple modem banks within a satellite payload. However, there is a notable gap in research on internal packet routing within extremely high-throughput satellites. To address this, we propose a real-time optimal flow allocation and priority queue scheduling method using online convex optimization-based model predictive control. We model the problem as a multi-commodity flow instance and employ an online interior-point method to solve the routing and scheduling optimization iteratively. This approach minimizes packet loss and supports real-time rerouting with low computational overhead. Our method is tested in simulation on a next-generation extremely high-throughput satellite model, demonstrating its effectiveness compared to a reference batch optimization and to traditional methods.

For decades, satellites have facilitated remote internet of things (IoT) services. However, the recent proliferation of increasingly capable sensors and a surge in the number deployed, has led to a substantial growth in the volume of data that needs to be transmitted via satellites. In response to this growing demand, free space optical communication systems have been proposed, as they allow for the use of large bandwidths of unlicensed spectrum, enabling high data rates. However, optical communications are highly vulnerable to weather-induced disruptions, thereby limiting their high potential. This paper proposes the use of high altitude platform station (HAPS) systems in conjunction with delay-tolerant networking techniques to increase the amount of data that can be transmitted to the ground from satellites when compared to the use of traditional ground station network architectures. Clustering, as a technique for grouping nodes in geographical proximity together, in vehicular communication networks, is a key technique to enhance network robustness and scalability despite challenges such as mobility and routing. This paper presents a robust clustering scheme based on cluster head backup list algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-assisted vehicular communication network, where multiple UAVs act as communication base stations for a vehicular network. To tackle the high mobility issues in vehicular communications, instead of allowing direct communication between all vehicles to the UAV, clustering methods will potentially be efficient in overcoming delay limitations, excessive power consumption and resource issues. Using the clustering technique, neighboring vehicles are grouped into clusters with a specific vehicle selected as the cluster head (CH) in each cluster. The selected CH connects directly to the UAV through an infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) link, subsequently establishing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications with vehicles in the same cluster. To increase cluster connectivity period, the proposed clustering scheme is developed based on considering the vehicle behavior for efficient selection of CHs and providing a CH backup list to maintain the stability of the cluster structure. Numerical evaluations show that the proposed system outperforms benchmark schemes in terms of clustering stability and reliability. It is also shown that the performance of the proposed scheme is not much affected by the increase in the number of vehicles. This indicates that the proposed scheme can be efficient in dense vehicular networks where resource constraints pose significant challenges.

This study introduces a decentralized approach to secure wireless communication using a cryptographic secret key generation algorithm among distributed nodes. The system model employs Gaussian prime numbers, ensuring the collaborative generation of a secret key. Pre-processing and post-processing functions enable to generate a secret key across the network. An error model evaluates aspects like thermal noise power and channel estimation errors, while simulations assess the success rate to factorize the norm of the secret key. It is observed that path loss-induced large scale fading emerges as a critical component impacting information and power loss. The robustness of the proposed model under fading channel conditions is evaluated with a success rate. Additionally, it is also observed that the tolerance value set in the factorization algorithms has a significant impact on the success rate. This paper addresses the limitations of current satellite payload architectures, which are predominantly hardware-driven and lack the flexibility to adapt to increasing data demands and uneven traffic. To overcome these challenges, we present a novel architecture for future regenerative and programmable satellite payloads and utilize interconnected modem banks to promote higher scalability and flexibility. We formulate an optimization problem to efficiently manage traffic among these modem banks and balance the load. Additionally, we provide comparative numerical simulation results, considering end-to-end delay and packet loss analysis. The results illustrate that our proposed architecture maintains lower delays and packet loss even with higher traffic demands and smaller buffer sizes.

Machine unlearning (MUL) is introduced as a means to achieve interference cancellation within artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled wireless systems. It is observed that interference cancellation with MUL demonstrates $30\%$ improvement in a classification task accuracy in the presence of a corrupted AI model. Accordingly, the necessity for instantaneous channel state information for existing interference source is eliminated and a corrupted latent space with interference noise is cleansed with MUL algorithm, achieving this without the necessity for either retraining or dataset cleansing. A Membership Inference Attack (MIA) served as a benchmark for assessing the efficacy of MUL in mitigating interference within a neural network model. The advantage of the MUL algorithm was determined by evaluating both the probability of interference and the quantity of samples requiring retraining. In a simple signal-to-noise ratio classification task, the comprehensive improvement across various test cases in terms of accuracy demonstrates that MUL exhibits extensive capabilities and limitations, particularly in native AI applications.

Space Domain Awareness (SDA) has become increasingly vital with the rapid growth of commercial space activities and the expansion of New Space. This paper stresses the necessity of transitioning from centralized to distributed SDA architectures. The current architecture predominantly relies on individual downhaul, which we propose to transition to on-orbit distribution. Our results demonstrate that the individual downhaul architecture does not scale efficiently with the increasing number of nodes, while on-orbit distribution offers significant improvements. By comparing the centralized architecture with the proposed distributed architecture, we highlight the advantages of enhanced coverage and resilience. Our findings show that on-orbit distribution greatly outperforms individual downhaul in terms of latency and scalability. Specifically, the latency results for on-orbit distribution are substantially lower and more consistent, even as the number of satellites increases. In addition, we address the inherent challenges associated with on-orbit distribution architecture, particularly cybersecurity concerns. We focus on link security to ensure the availability and integrity of data transmission in these advanced SDA systems. Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite mega constellations are beginning to include laser inter-satellite links (LISLs) to extend the Internet to the most remote locations on Earth. Since the process of establishing these links incurs a setup delay on the order of seconds, a static network topology is generally established well in advance, which is then used for the routing calculations. However, this involves keeping links active even when they are not being used to forward traffic, leading to poor energy efficiency. Motivated by technological advances that are gradually decreasing the LISL setup delays, we foresee scenarios where it will be possible to compute routes and establish dynamic LISLs on demand. This will require considering setup delays as penalties that will affect the end-to-end latency. In this paper, we present a nonlinear optimization model that considers these penalties in the cost function and propose three heuristic algorithms that solve the problem in a tractable way. The algorithms establish different trade-offs in terms of performance and computational complexity. We extensively analyze metrics including average latency, route change rate, outage probability, and jitter in Starlink's Phase I version 2 constellation. The results show the benefit of adaptive routing schemes according to the link setup delay. In particular, more complex schemes can decrease the average end-to-end latency in exchange for an increase in execution time. On the other hand, depending on the maximum tolerated latency, it is possible to use less computationally complex schemes which will be more scalable for the satellite mega constellations of the future.

We address the challenge of developing an orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS)-based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system where each user is modulated using orthogonal pulses in the delay Doppler domain. Building upon the concept of the sufficient (bi)orthogonality train-pulse [1], we extend this idea by introducing Hermite functions, known for their orthogonality properties. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed Hermite functions outperform the traditional OTFS-NOMA schemes, including power-domain (PDM) NOMA and code-domain (CDM) NOMA, in terms of bit error rate (BER) over a high-mobility channel. The algorithm's complexity is minimal, primarily involving the demodulation of OTFS. The spectrum efficiency of Hermite-based OTFS-NOMA is K times that of OTFS-CDM-NOMA scheme, where K is the spreading length of the NOMA waveform.

Interplanetary links (IPL) serve as crucial enablers for space exploration, facilitating secure and adaptable space missions. An integrated IPL with inter-satellite communication (IP-ISL) establishes a unified deep space network, expanding coverage and reducing atmospheric losses. The challenges, including irregularities in charged density, hardware impairments, and hidden celestial body brightness are analyzed with a reflectarray-based IP-ISL between Earth and Moon orbiters. It is observed that $10^{-8}$ order severe hardware impairments with intense solar plasma density drops an ideal system's spectral efficiency (SE) from $\sim\!38~\textrm{(bit/s)/Hz}$ down to $0~\textrm{(bit/s)/Hz}$. An ideal full angle of arrival fluctuation recovery with full steering range achieves $\sim\!20~\textrm{(bit/s)/Hz}$ gain and a limited beamsteering with a numerical reflectarray design achieves at least $\sim\!1~\textrm{(bit/s)/Hz}$ gain in severe hardware impairment cases., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

This study introduces a novel approach to enhance communication networks in the cislunar space by leveraging Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS). Using the ability of RIS to dynamically control electromagnetic waves, this paper tackles the challenges of signal attenuation, directivity, and divergence in cislunar missions, primarily caused by immense distances and that Earth-based station transmitters do not always face the Moon. A new optimization problem is formulated, whose objective is to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for Earth-to-Moon communications. We derive a closed-form solution to the problem of determining the optimal RIS phase shift configuration based on the effective area of the RIS. Distributed massive multiple-input multiple output (mMIMO) system for low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks is introduced as a promising technique to provide broadband connectivity. Nevertheless, several challenges persist in implementing distributed mMIMO systems for LEO satellite networks. These challenges include providing scalable massive access implementation as the system complexity increases with network size. Another challenging issue is the asynchronous arrival of signals at the user terminals due to the different propagation delays among distributed antennas in space, which destroys the coherent transmission, and consequently degrades the system performance. In this paper, we propose a scalable distributed mMIMO system for LEO satellite networks based on dynamic user-centric clustering. Aiming to obtain scalable implementation, new algorithms for initial cooperative access, cluster selection, and cluster handover are provided. In addition, phase shift-aware precoding is implemented to compensate for the propagation delay phase shifts. The performance of the proposed user-centric distributed mMIMO is compared with two baseline configurations: the non-cooperative transmission systems, where each user connects to only a single satellite, and the full-cooperative distributed mMIMO systems, where all satellites contribute serving each user. The numerical results show the potential of the proposed distributed mMIMO system to enhance system spectral efficiency when compared to noncooperative transmission systems. Additionally, it demonstrates the ability to minimize the serving cluster size for each user, thereby reducing the overall system complexity in comparison to the full-cooperative distributed mMIMO systems.

The emergence of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite mega-constellations is dynamically transforming the space sector. While free-space optical (FSO) links efficiently facilitate intersatellite data forwarding, they suffer from atmospheric/weather conditions in the space-to-ground link. This study delves into utilizing high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) as elevated relay stations strategically positioned above terrestrial ground stations. We introduce the concept of high-altitude ground stations (HAGS), an innovative approach to enabling the development of all optical LEO satellite constellations. The first contribution is an analysis of the HAGS-based network architecture where the LEO spacecraft only hosts FSO transceivers. Secondly, we execute an extensive simulation campaign to determine the gain of HAGS, including a new equivalency model with the traditional ground station approach. A precise incident wave angle estimation in aerial communication is a key enabler in sixth-generation wireless communication network. With this goal, a generic 3-dimensional (3D) channel model is analyzed for air-to-air (A2A) networks under antenna misalignment, radio frequency impairments and polarization loss. The unique aspects of each aerial node are highlighted and the few-shot learning as a model agnostic meta-learning (MAML) classifier is proposed for learning-to-learn (L2L) incident wave angle estimation by utilizing the received signal strength (RSS). Additionally, a more computationally efficient technique, first order model agnostic meta-learning (FOMAML) is implemented. It has been observed that the proposed approach reaches up to 85% training accuracy and 75.4% evaluation accuracy with MAML. Regarding this, a convergence rate and accuracy trade-off have been established for several cases of MAML and FOMAML. This paper focuses on FSO-based wireless power transmission (WPT) from Earth-Moon Lagrangian Point-2 (EMLP-2) to a receiver optical antenna equipped with solar cells that can be located anywhere on the lunar far side (LFS). Different solar-powered satellite (SPS) configurations which are EMLP-2 located single stable satellite and EMLP-2 halo orbit revolving single, double, and triple satellites are evaluated in terms of 100% LFS surface coverage percentage (SCP) and continuous Earth visibility. It is found that an equidistant triple satellite scheme on EMLP-2 halo orbit with a semi-major axis length of 15,000 km provides full SCP for LFS and it is essential for the continuous LFS wireless power transmission. In our proposed dynamic cislunar space model, geometric and temporal parameters of the Earth-Moon systems are used in affine transformations. Our dynamic model enables us to determine the full coverage time rate of a specific region such as the LFS southern pole. The outcomes show that the equidistant double satellite scheme provides SCP=100% during 88.60% time of these satellites' single revolution around the EMLP-2 halo orbit. Finally, the probability density function (PDF) of the random harvested power $P_H$ is determined and it validates the simulation data extracted from the stable EMLP-2 satellite and revolving satellite around EMLP-2 halo orbit for minimum and maximum LoS distances. Although the pointing devices to mitigate random misalignment errors are considered for the stable and revolving SPSs, better pointing accuracy is considered for the stable satellite. Our simulations show that the probability of $P_H\le$41.6 W is around 0.5 for the stable satellite whereas the CDF=0.99 for the revolving satellite case for a transmit power of 1 kW., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

In the backdrop of escalating ambitions for space exploration, particularly with programs like Artemis aiming for a sustainable human presence on the Moon, the issue of efficient and reliable energy transmission has become a critical concern. This paper focuses on the impact of levitating lunar dust particle above the lunar surface on energy harvesting through a Free Space Optics (FSO) beam, commonly known as "laser power beaming". This study employs known mathematical models and numerical analysis to examine a ground-to-ground link on the lunar surface, using realistic data from the literature. More precisely, it assesses transmission losses and the performance of FSO energy harvesting in the presence of lunar dust under both illuminated and dark lighting conditions. The findings reveal that the choices regarding the height above the lunar surface and the transmission distance are key determinants in evaluating both losses and energy harvesting efficiency. Specifically, it was observed that the transmit power required to operate a 250W Polaris rover at a distance of 20km was on the order of several kilowatts. The use of sub-Terahertz (sub-THz) band is gaining considerable attention in 6G networks. In this study, we introduce hardware and propagation integrated 3D Propagation Model to describe sub-THz channels and discuss its advantages over both deterministic and stochastic 6G channel models. The unexplored mutuality of localization and communication is presented and its potential in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) applications is highlighted. Afterward, a real-time sub-THz localization experiment is conducted to show the impact of the mispositioned and misaligned narrow beams on service quality. In continuation, we highlight the most current challenges and developments in THz localization and explore the potential of sub-THz frequencies to efficiently utilize the ultra-wideband spectrum. In free-space optical satellite networks (FSOSNs), satellites can have different laser inter-satellite link (LISL) ranges for connectivity. Greater LISL ranges can reduce network latency of the path but can also result in an increase in transmission power for satellites on the path. Consequently, this tradeoff between satellite transmission power and network latency should be investigated, and in this work we examine it in FSOSNs drawing on the Starlink Phase 1 Version 3 and Kuiper Shell 2 constellations for different LISL ranges and different inter-continental connections. We use appropriate system models for calculating the average satellite transmission power and network latency. The results show that the mean network latency decreases and mean average satellite transmission power increases with an increase in LISL range. For the Toronto--Sydney inter-continental connection in an FSOSN with Starlink's Phase 1 Version 3 constellation, when the LISL range is approximately 2,900 km, the mean network latency and mean average satellite transmission power intersect are approximately 135 ms and 380 mW, respectively. For an FSOSN with the Kuiper Shell 2 constellation in this inter-continental connection, this LISL range is around 3,800 km, and the two parameters are approximately 120 ms and 700 mW, respectively. For the Toronto--Istanbul and Toronto--London inter-continental connections, the LISL ranges at the intersection are different and vary from 2,600 km to 3,400 km. Thousands of satellites, asteroids, and rocket bodies break, collide, or degrade, resulting in large amounts of space debris in low Earth orbit. The presence of space debris poses a serious threat to satellite mega-constellations and to future space missions. Debris can be avoided if detected within the safety range of a satellite. In this paper, an integrated sensing and communication technique is proposed to detect space debris for satellite mega-constellations. The canonical polyadic (CP) tensor decomposition method is used to estimate the rank of the tensor that denotes the number of paths including line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight by exploiting the sparsity of THz channel with limited scattering. The analysis reveals that the reflected signals of the THz can be utilized for the detection of space debris. The CP decomposition is cast as an optimization problem and solved using the alternating least square (ALS) algorithm. Simulation results show that the probability of detection of the proposed tensor-based scheme is higher than the conventional energy-based detection scheme for the space debris detection.

This study investigates an experimental software defined radio (SDR) implementation on 180 GHz. Rate scarcity and frequency sparsity are discussed as hardware bottlenecks. Experimental challenges are explained along with the derived system model of such a cascaded structure. Multiple error metrics for the terahertz (THz) signal are acquired, and various case scenarios are subsequently compared. The SDR-THz testbed reaches 3.2 Mbps with < 1 degree skew error. The use of a reflector plate can fine-tune the frequency error and gain imbalance in the expense of at least 14.91 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The results demonstrate the complete feasibility of SDR-based baseband signal generation in THz communication, revealing abundant opportunities to overcome hardware limitations in experimental research., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

There is no doubt that the Moon has become the center of interest for commercial and international actors. Over the past decade, the number of planned long-term missions has increased dramatically. This makes the establishment of cislunar space networks (CSNs) crucial to orchestrate uninterrupted communications between the Moon and Earth. However, there are numerous challenges, unknowns, and uncertainties associated with cislunar communications that may pose various risks to lunar missions. In this study, we aim to address these challenges for cislunar communications by proposing a machine learning-based cislunar space domain awareness (SDA) capability that enables robust and secure communications. To this end, we first propose a detailed channel model for selected cislunar scenarios. Secondly, we propose two types of interference that could model anomalies that occur in cislunar space and are so far known only to a limited extent. Finally, we discuss our cislunar SDA to work in conjunction with the spacecraft communication system. Our proposed cislunar SDA, involving heuristic learning capabilities with machine learning algorithms, detects interference models with over 96% accuracy. The results demonstrate the promising performance of our cislunar SDA approach for secure and robust cislunar communication.

High throughput satellites (HTSs) outpace traditional satellites due to their multi-beam transmission. The rise of low Earth orbit mega constellations amplifies HTS data rate demands to terabits/second with acceptable latency. This surge in data rate necessitates multiple modems, often exceeding single device capabilities. Consequently, satellites employ several processors, forming a complex packet-switch network. This can lead to potential internal congestion and challenges in adhering to strict quality of service (QoS) constraints. While significant research exists on constellation-level routing, a literature gap remains on the internal routing within a single HTS. The intricacy of this internal network architecture presents a significant challenge to achieve high data rates. This paper introduces an online optimal flow allocation and scheduling method for HTSs. The problem is presented as a multi-commodity flow instance with different priority data streams. An initial full time horizon model is proposed as a benchmark. We apply a model predictive control (MPC) approach to enable adaptive routing based on current information and the forecast within the prediction time horizon while allowing for deviation of the latter. Importantly, MPC is inherently suited to handle uncertainty in incoming flows. Our approach minimizes the packet loss by optimally and adaptively managing the priority queue schedulers and flow exchanges between satellite processing modules. Central to our method is a routing model focusing on optimal priority scheduling to enhance data rates and maintain QoS. The model's stages are critically evaluated, and results are compared to traditional methods via numerical simulations. High throughput satellites (HTS), with their digital payload technology, are expected to play a key role as enablers of the upcoming 6G networks. HTS are mainly designed to provide higher data rates and capacities. Fueled by technological advancements including beamforming, advanced modulation techniques, reconfigurable phased array technologies, and electronically steerable antennas, HTS have emerged as a fundamental component for future network generation. This paper offers a comprehensive state-of-the-art of HTS systems, with a focus on standardization, patents, channel multiple access techniques, routing, load balancing, and the role of software-defined networking (SDN). In addition, we provide a vision for next-satellite systems that we named as extremely-HTS (EHTS) toward autonomous satellites supported by the main requirements and key technologies expected for these systems. The EHTS system will be designed such that it maximizes spectrum reuse and data rates, and flexibly steers the capacity to satisfy user demand. We introduce a novel architecture for future regenerative payloads while summarizing the challenges imposed by this architecture.

Securing satellite communication networks is imperative in the rapidly evolving landscape of advanced telecommunications, particularly in the context of 6G advancements. This paper establishes a secure low earth orbit (LEO) satellite network paradigm to address the challenges of the evolving 6G era, with a focus on enhancing communication integrity between satellites and ground stations. Countering the threat of jamming, which can disrupt vital communication channels, is a key goal of this work. In particular, this paper investigates the performance of two LEO satellite communication scenarios under the presence of jamming attacker. In the first scenario, we consider a system that comprises one transmitting satellite, a receiving ground station, and a high altitude platform station (HAPS) acting as a jammer. The HAPS disrupts communication between the satellite and the ground station, impeding signal transmission. The second scenario involves two satellites, one is the transmitter while the other works as a relay, accompanied by a ground station, and a jamming HAPS. In this scenario, the transmitting satellite sends data to the ground station using two different paths, i.e., direct and indirect transmission paths, with a relay satellite acting as an intermediary in the case of indirect transmission. For both scenarios, we study the system security by developing mathematical frameworks to investigate the outage effect resulting from the jamming signals orchestrated by the HAPS. Our results show that the satellite cooperation in the second scenario improves the system's security since the extreme jamming effect occurs only when both links are simultaneously disturbed.

An important task in the field of sensor technology is the efficient implementation of adaptation procedures of measurements from one sensor to another sensor of identical design. One idea is to use the estimation of an affine transformation between different systems, which can be improved by the knowledge of experts. This paper presents an improved solution from Glacier Research that was published back in 1973. The results demonstrate the adaptability of this solution for various applications, including software calibration of sensors, implementation of expert-based adaptation, and paving the way for future advancements such as distributed learning methods. One idea here is to use the knowledge of experts for estimating an affine transformation between different systems. We evaluate our research with simulations and also with real measured data of a multi-sensor board with 8 identical sensors. Both data set and evaluation script are provided for download. The results show an improvement for both the simulation and the experiments with real data.

In this paper, the impact of the acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ATP) module utilization on inter-satellite energy harvesting is investigated for 1U (0.1$\times$0.1$\times$0.1 m) and 12U (0.2$\times$0.2$\times$0.3 m) satellites for adaptive beam divergence and the corresponding distances while maintaining the spot diameters. Random elevation and azimuth misalignment error angles at both the transmitter and the receiver are modeled with Gaussian distribution hence the radial pointing error angle is modeled with Rayleigh distribution. The Monte Carlo approach is used to determine mean radial error angles for both transmitter and receiver in the non-ATP and ATP cases. The average harvested powers are analyzed as a function of the transmit powers and inter-satellite distances for both 1U and 12U satellites while considering the minimum power requirements. Our simulation results show that in the non-ATP case, the minimum required average harvested power cannot be achieved beyond 680 and 1360 km distances for 1U and 12U satellites, respectively, with a maximum transmit power of 1 kW. However, 2 W of average harvested power can be achieved at around 750 and 1500 km for 1U and 12U satellites, respectively, with a transmit power of 27 W in the presence of an ATP mechanism., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Distributed computing enables Internet of vehicle (IoV) services by collaboratively utilizing the computing resources from the network edge and the vehicles. However, the computing interruption issue caused by frequent edge network handoffs, and a severe shortage of computing resources are two problems in providing IoV services. High altitude platform station (HAPS) computing can be a promising addition to existing distributed computing frameworks because of its wide coverage and strong computational capabilities. In this regard, this paper proposes an adaptive scheme in a new distributed computing framework that involves HAPS computing to deal with the two problems of the IoV. Based on the diverse demands of vehicles, network dynamics, and the time-sensitivity of handoffs, the proposed scheme flexibly divides each task into three parts and assigns them to the vehicle, roadside units (RSUs), and a HAPS to perform synchronous computing. The scheme also constrains the computing of tasks at RSUs such that they are completed before handoffs to avoid the risk of computing interruptions. On this basis, we formulate a delay minimization problem that considers task-splitting ratio, transmit power, bandwidth allocation, and computing resource allocation. To solve the problem, variable replacement and successive convex approximation-based method are proposed. The simulation results show that this scheme not only avoids the negative effects caused by handoffs in a flexible manner, it also takes delay performance into account and maintains the delay stability.

Delay-tolerant networking (DTN) offers a novel architecture that can be used to enhance store-carry-forward routing in satellite networks. Since these networks can take advantage of scheduled contact plans, distributed algorithms like the Contact Graph Routing (CGR) can be utilized to optimize data delivery performance. However, despite the numerous improvements made to CGR, there is a lack of proposals to prioritize traffic with distinct quality of service (QoS) requirements. This study presents adaptations to CGR to improve QoS-compliant delivery ratio when transmitting traffic with different latency constraints, along with an integer linear programming optimization model that serves as a performance upper bound. The extensive results obtained by simulating different scenarios show that the proposed algorithms can effectively improve the delivery ratio and energy efficiency while meeting latency constraints.

Connected autonomous vehicles (CAV) constitute an important application of future-oriented traffic management .A vehicular system dominated by fully autonomous vehicles requires a robust and efficient vehicle-to-everything (V2X) infrastructure that will provide sturdy connection of vehicles in both short and long distances for a large number of devices, requiring high spectral efficiency (SE). Power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (PD-NOMA) technique has the potential to provide the required high SE levels. In this paper, a vehicular PD-NOMA testbed is implemented using software defined radio (SDR) nodes. The main concerns and their corresponding solutions arising from the implementation are highlighted. The bit error rates(BER) of vehicles with different channel conditions are measured for mobile and stationary cases. The extent of the estimation errors on the success rate beyond the idealized theoretical analysis view is investigated and the approaches to alleviate these errors are discussed. In this paper, the effective capacity of cooperative communication (CC) systems with hybrid Automatic repeat request (HARQ) is derived. The derived expressions are valid for any channel distribution and with any arbitrary number of retransmissions by the source and relay for both HARQ-repetition redundancy (RR) and HARQ-incremental redundancy (IR) over asymmetric channels. As an example, we use the derived EC expression over Rayleigh fading channels. Several results are obtained for a low rate and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We can see that the EC attends its maximum value with a small number of retransmissions. As expected when the relay-destination channel has low SNR, it is better than the relay does not participate especially when we assign a large number of transitions at the relay. For high data rates and strict quality of service (QoS) constraints, it is better to increase the number of relay transmissions. Space has been reforming and this evolution brings new threats that, together with technological developments and malicious intent, can pose a major challenge. Space domain awareness (SDA), a new conceptual idea, has come to the forefront. It aims sensing, detection, identification and countermeasures by providing autonomy, intelligence and flexibility against potential threats in space. In this study, we first present an insightful and clear view of the new space. Secondly, we propose an integrated SDA and communication (ISDAC) system for attacker detection. We assume that the attacker has beam-steering antennas and is capable to vary attack scenarios, such as random attacks on some receiver antennas. To track random patterns and meet SDA requirements, a lightweight convolutional neural network architecture is developed. The proposed ISDAC system shows superior and robust performance under 12 different attacker configurations with a detection accuracy of over 97.8%.

The ultra-dense deployment of interconnected satellites will characterize future low Earth orbit (LEO) mega-constellations. Exploiting this towards a more efficient satellite network (SatNet), this paper proposes a novel LEO SatNet architecture based on distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (DM-MIMO) technology allowing ground user terminals to be connected to a cluster of satellites. To this end, we investigate various aspects of DM-MIMO-based satellite network design, the benefits of using this architecture, the associated challenges, and the potential solutions. In addition, we propose a distributed joint power allocation and handover management (D-JPAHM) technique that jointly optimizes the power allocation and handover management processes in a cross-layer manner. This framework aims to maximize the network throughput and minimize the handover rate while considering the quality-of-service (QoS) demands of user terminals and the power capabilities of the satellites. Moreover, we devise an artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution to efficiently implement the proposed D-JPAHM framework in a manner suitable for real-time operation and the dynamic SatNet environment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce and study DM-MIMO technology in LEO SatNets. Physical layer authentication (PLA) is the process of claiming identity of a node based on its physical layer characteristics such as channel fading or hardware imperfections. In this work, we propose a novel PLA method for the inter-satellite communication links (ISLs) of the LEO satellites. In the proposed PLA method, multiple receiving satellites validate the identity of the transmitter by comparing the Doppler frequency measurements with the reference mobility information of the legitimate transmitter and then fuse their decision considering the selected decision rule. Analytical expressions are obtained for the spoofing detection probability and false alarm probability of the fusion methods. Numerically obtained high authentication performance results pave the way to a novel and easily integrable authentication mechanism for the LEO satellite networks.

An improved mean squared error (MSE) minimization solution based on eigenvector decomposition approach is conceived for wideband non-orthogonal multiple-access based computation over multi-access channel (NOMA-CoMAC) framework. This work aims at further developing NOMA-CoMAC for next-generation multimodal sensor networks, where a multimodal sensor monitors several environmental parameters such as temperature, pollution, humidity, or pressure. We demonstrate that our proposed scheme achieves an MSE value approximately 0.7 lower at E_b/N_o = 1 dB in comparison to that for the average sum-channel based method. Moreover, the MSE performance gain of our proposed solution increases even more for larger values of subcarriers and sensor nodes due to the benefit of the diversity gain. This, in return, suggests that our proposed scheme is eminently suitable for multimodal sensor networks.

Issues with tracking, precision pointing, and Doppler shift are the major sources of performance loss in laser inter-satellite communication that can severely decrease the coverage and overall performance of satellite constellations. As a solution to these problems, we propose a cooperation strategy in which a high altitude platform station (HAPS) staying at a quasi-stationary position contributes to the inter-satellite connectivity. In this setup, the HAPS node uses two different scheduling approaches: one that relies on the zenith angle; the other on instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. To quantify the performance of the proposed scheme, overall outage probabilities for the two scheduling methods are obtained. In addition, guidelines for the design of practical inter-satellite networks are provided.

In recent years, satellite communication (SatCom) systems have been widely used for navigation, broadcasting application, disaster recovery, weather sensing, and even spying on the Earth. As the number of satellites is highly increasing and with the radical revolution in wireless technology, eavesdropping on SatCom will be possible in next-generation networks. In this context, we introduce the satellite eavesdropping approach, where an eavesdropping spacecraft can intercept optical communications established between a low Earth orbit satellite and a high altitude platform station (HAPS). Specifically, we propose two practical eavesdropping scenarios for satellite-to-HAPS (downlink) and HAPS-to-satellite (uplink) optical communications, where the attacker spacecraft can eavesdrop on the transmitted signal or the received signal. To quantify the secrecy performance of the scenarios, the average secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability expressions are derived and validated with Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, secrecy throughput of the proposed models is investigated. We observe that turbulence-induced fading significantly impacts the secrecy performance of free-space optical communication.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Network (SatNet) with their mega-constellations are expected to play a key role in providing ubiquitous Internet and communications services in the future. LEO SatNets will provide wide-area coverage and support service availability, continuity, and scalability. To support the integration of SatNets and terrestrial Fifth Generation (5G)networks and beyond, the satellite communication industry has become increasingly involved with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization activities for 5G. In this work, we review the 3GPP standardization activities for the integration of SatNets in 5G and beyond. The 3GPP use cases of SatNets are highlighted and potential requirements to realize them are summarized as well. The impacted areas of New Radio(NR) are discussed with some potential solutions. The foreseen requirements for the management and orchestration of SatNets within 5G are described. Future standardization directions are discussed to support the full integration of SatNets in SixthGeneration (6G) with the goal of ubiquitous global connectivity.

Group authentication is a method of confirmation that a set of users belong to a group and of distributing a common key among them. Unlike the standard authentication schemes where one central authority authenticates users one by one, group authentication can handle the authentication process at once for all members of the group. The recently presented group authentication algorithms mainly exploit Lagrange's polynomial interpolation along with elliptic curve groups over finite fields. As a fresh approach, this work suggests use of linear spaces for group authentication and key establishment for a group of any size. The approach with linear spaces introduces a reduced computation and communication load to establish a common shared key among the group members. The advantages of using vector spaces make the proposed method applicable to energy and resource constrained devices. In addition to providing lightweight authentication and key agreement, this proposal allows any user in a group to make a non-member to be a member, which is expected to be useful for autonomous systems in the future. The scheme is designed in a way that the sponsors of such members can easily be recognized by anyone in the group. Unlike the other group authentication schemes based on Lagrange's polynomial interpolation, the proposed scheme doesn't provide a tool for adversaries to compromise the whole group secrets by using only a few members' shares as well as it allows to recognize a non-member easily, which prevents service interruption attacks.

In this paper, the performance of a power domain downlink multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access system in dual-hop full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is investigated over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels by considering the channel estimation error and feedback delay. Particularly, in the investigated system, the base station equipped with multiple antennas transmits information to all mobile users by applying conventional transmit antenna selection/Alamouti-space-time block coding scheme with the help of a dedicated FD amplify-and-forward relay. The received signals at mobile users are combined according to maximal-ratio combining technique to exploit benefits of receive diversity. In order to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system, outage probability (OP) is investigated and tight lower bound expressions are derived for the obtained OP. Moreover, asymptotic analyses are also conducted for ideal and practical conditions to provide further insights about the outage behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. In this work, we study the performance of multiple-hop mixed frequency (RF)/free-space optical (FSO) communication-based decode-and-forward protocol for multicast networks. So far, serving a large number of users is considered a promising approach for real-time applications to address the massive data traffic demands. In this regard, we propose two practical use-cases. In the former model, we propose a high altitude platform station (HAPS)-aided mixed RF/FSO/RF communication scheme where a terrestrial ground station intends to communicate with a cluster of nodes through two stratospheric HAPS systems. In the latter model, we assume that the line of sight connectivity is inaccessible between the two HAPS systems due to high attenuation caused by large propagation distances. Thereby, we propose a low Earth orbit satellite-aided mixed RF/FSO/FSO/RF communication. For the proposed scenarios, closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP) and bit error rate are derived. In addition, to illustrate the asymptotic behavior of the proposed models, diversity gains are obtained. Furthermore, ergodic capacity and energy efficiency (EE) are provided for both scenarios. Finally, the simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical derivations. The results show that satellite-aided mixed RF/FSO/FSO/RF scenarios achieve better OP, whereas HAPS-aided mixed RF/FSO/RF scenario can achieve higher EE.

Non-terrestrial networks have been attracting much interest from the industry and academia. Satellites and high altitude platform station (HAPS) systems are expected to be the key enablers of next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel downlink satellite communication (SatCom) model where free-space optical (FSO) communication is adopted between a satellite and a HAPS node. A hybrid FSO/radio-frequency (RF) transmission model is used between the HAPS node and ground station (GS). In the first phase of transmission, the satellite selects the HAPS node that provides the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In the second phase, the selected HAPS decodes and forwards the signal to the GS. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system, outage probability expressions are derived for exponentiated Weibull (EW) and shadowed-Rician fading models while considering the atmospheric turbulence, stratospheric attenuation, and attenuation due to scattering, path loss, and pointing errors. Additionally, asymptotic analysis is carried out and diversity gain is provided. Furthermore, the impact of aperture averaging technique, temperature, and wind speed are investigated. We also provide some important guidelines that can be helpful for the design of practical HAPS-aided SatCom. Finally, the results show that the use of HAPS improves the system performance and that the proposed model performs better than all other existing models.

Towards sixth-generation networks (6G), satellite communication systems, especially based on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) networks, become promising due to their unique and comprehensive capabilities. These advantages are accompanied by a variety of challenges such as security vulnerabilities, management of hybrid systems, and high mobility. In this paper, firstly, a security deficiency in the physical layer is addressed with a conceptual framework, considering the cyber-physical nature of the satellite systems, highlighting the potential attacks. Secondly, a learning-driven detection scheme is proposed, and the lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) is designed. The performance of the designed CNN architecture is compared with a prevalent machine learning algorithm, support vector machine (SVM). The results show that deficiency attacks against the satellite systems can be detected by employing the proposed scheme.

Recent studies have shown that satellite communication (SatCom) will have a fundamental role in the next generation non-terrestrial networks (NTN). In SatCom, radio-frequency (RF) or free-space optical (FSO) communications can be used depending on the communication environment. Motivated by the complementary nature of RF and FSO communication, we propose a hybrid RF/FSO transmission strategy for SatCom, where the satellite selects RF or FSO links depending on the weather conditions obtained from the context-aware sensor. To quantify the performance of the proposed network, we derive the outage probability expressions by considering different weather conditions. Moreover, asymptotic analysis is conducted to obtain the diversity order. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of non-zero boresight pointing errors and illustrate the benefits of the aperture averaging to mitigate the effect of misalignment and atmospheric turbulence. Finally, we suggest effective design guidelines that can be useful for system designers. The results have shown that the proposed strategy performs better than the dual-mode conventional hybrid RF/FSO communication in terms of outage probability offering some power gain.

Edge intelligence, a new paradigm to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) applications by leveraging computing resources on the network edge, can be used to improve intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, due to physical limitations and energy-supply constraints, the computing powers of edge equipment are usually limited. High altitude platform station (HAPS) computing can be considered as a promising extension of edge computing. HAPS is deployed in the stratosphere to provide wide coverage and strong computational capabilities. It is suitable to coordinate terrestrial resources and store the fundamental data associated with ITS-based applications. In this work, three computing layers,i.e., vehicles, terrestrial network edges, and HAPS, are integrated to build a computation framework for ITS, where the HAPS data library stores the fundamental data needed for the applications. In addition, the caching technique is introduced for network edges to store some of the fundamental data from the HAPS so that large propagation delays can be reduced. We aim to minimize the delay of the system by optimizing computation offloading and caching decisions as well as bandwidth and computing resource allocations. The simulation results highlight the benefits of HAPS computing for mitigating delays and the significance of caching at network edges.

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks (SatNets) are envisioned to play a crucial role in providing global and ubiquitous connectivity efficiently. Accordingly, in the coming years, thousands of LEO satellites will be launched to create ultradense LEO mega-constellations, and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is working on evolving fifth-generation (5G) systems to support such non-terrestrial networks (NTN). However, many challenges are associated with the deployment of LEOs from communications and networking perspectives. In this paper, we propose a novel cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) based architecture for future ultra-dense LEO SatNets. We discuss various aspects of network design, such as duplexing mode, pilot assignment, beamforming, and handover management. In addition, we propose a joint optimization framework for the power allocation and handover management processes to maximize the network throughput and minimize the handover rate while ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) satisfaction for users. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce and study CF-mMIMO-based LEO SatNets. In this work, we propose a new physical layer security framework for optical space networks. More precisely, we consider two practical eavesdropping scenarios: free-space optical (FSO) eavesdropping in the space and FSO eavesdropping in the air. In the former, we assume that a high altitude platform station (HAPS) is trying to capture the confidential information from the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite, whereas in the latter, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) eavesdropper is trying to intercept the confidential information from the HAPS node. To quantify the overall performance of both scenarios, we obtain closed-form secrecy outage probability (SOP) and probability of positive secrecy capacity (PPSC) expressions and validate with Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, we provide important design guidelines that can be helpful in the design of secure non-terrestrial networks.

In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of radio frequency (RF) eavesdropping for a high altitude platform station (HAPS) aided satellite communication (SatCom) system. More precisely, we propose a new SatCom scheme where a HAPS node is used as an intermediate relay to transmit the satellite's signal to the ground station (GS). In this network, free-space optical (FSO) communication is adopted between HAPS and satellite, whereas RF communication is used between HAPS and GS as the line-of-sight (LoS) communication cannot be established. To quantify the overall secrecy performance of the proposed scheme, closed-form secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of positive secrecy capacity (PPSC) expressions are derived. Moreover, we investigate the effect of pointing error and shadowing severity parameters. Finally, design guidelines that can be useful in the design of practical SatCom networks are presented.

The impact of localization systems in our daily lives is increasing. As next-generation networks will introduce hyperconnectivity with the emerging applications, this impact will undoubtedly further increase, proliferating the importance of the location information's reliability. As society becomes more dependent on this information in terms of the products and services, security solutions will have to be enriched to provide countermeasures sufficiently advanced to ever-evolving threats, forcing the joint design of communication and localization systems. This paper envisions integrated communication and localization systems by focusing on localization security.
