11. Unpinned Dirac-Fermions in Carbon-Phosphorous-Arsenic Based Ternary Monolayer

Abstract

We predict energetically and dynamically stable ternary Carbon-Phosphorous-Arsenic (CPAs2) monolayers in buckled geometric structure by employing density functional theory based calculations. We consider three different symmetric configurations, namely, inversion (i), mirror (m) and rotational (r). The low-energy dispersions in electronic band structure and density of states (DOS) around the Fermi level contain two contrasting features: (a) parabolic dispersion around highly symmetric Gamma point with a step function in DOS due to nearly-free-particle-like Schroedinger-Fermions and (b) linear dispersion around highly symmetric K point with linear DOS due to massless Dirac-Fermions for i-CPAs2 monolayer. The step function in DOS is a consequence of two-dimensionality of the system in which the motion of nearly-free-particles is confined. However, a closer look at (b) reveals that the ternary monolayers possess distinct characters, namely (i) massless-gapless, (ii) slightly massive-gapped and (iii) unpinned massless-gapless Dirac-Fermions for i, m and r-CPAs2 configurations respectively. Thus, the nature of states around the Fermi level depends crucially on the symmetry of systems. In addition, we probe the influence of mechanical strain on the properties of CPAs2 monolayer. The results indicate that the characteristic dispersions of (a) and (b) move in opposite directions in energy which leads to a metal-to-semimetal transition in i and r-CPAs2 configurations, for a few percentages of tensile strain. On the other hand, a strain induced metal-to-semiconductor transition is observed in m-CPAs2 configuration with a tunable energy band gap. Interestingly, unlike graphene, the Dirac cones can be unpinned from highly symmetric K (and K') point, but they are restricted to move along the edges (K-M'-K') of first Brillouin zone due to C2 symmetry in i and r-CPAs2 configurations., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

12. Unconventional spin polarization at Argon ion milled SrTiO3 Interfaces

Abstract

Interfacial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the perovskite-type oxide, such as SrTiO3, has attracted significant attention due to its properties of ferromagnetism, superconductivity, and its potential application in oxide-based low-power consumption electronics. Recent studies have investigated spin-to-charge conversion at the STO interface with different materials, which could affect the efficiency of this 2DEG interface. In this report, we presented an Ar^+ ion milling method to create a 2DEG at STO directly by inducing oxygen vacancies. To quantify the spin-to-charge conversion of this interface, we measured the angular-dependent spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) spectra, revealing an unconventional spin polarization at the interface of Argon ion-milled STO and NiFe. Furthermore, a micromagnetic simulation for angular-dependent spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) has been performed, confirming the large unconventional spin polarization at the interface.

Abstract

3D pitch rotation of microparticles and cells assumes importance in a wide variety of applications in biology, physics, chemistry and medicine. Applications such as cell imaging and injection benefit from pitch-rotational manipulation. Generation of such motion in single beam optical tweezers has remained elusive due to complicacies of generating high enough ellipticity perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Further, trapping an extended object at two locations can only generate partial pitch motion by moving one of the foci in the axial direction. Here, we use hexagonal-shaped upconverting particles and single cells trapped close to a gold-coated glass cover slip in a sample chamber to generate complete 360 degree and continuous pitch motion even with a single optical tweezers beam. The tweezers beam passing through the gold surface is partially absorbed and generates a hot-spot to produce circulatory convective flows in the vicinity which rotates the objects. The rotation rate can be controlled by the intensity of the laser light and the thickness of the gold layer. Thus such a simple configuration can turn the particle in the pitch sense. The circulatory flows in this technique have a diameter of about 5 $\mu$m which is smaller than those reported using acousto-fluidic techniques.

Abstract

The mathematical foundation for this research study is based on classical beam theories. The equivalent Stiffness approach was used to do free vibration analysis on simply supported thin curved beams. A complete parametric investigation of the free vibration response of a hypothetical bimodular compoᵴite material laminated simply supported curved beam was reported. Bimodular composite laminated structures are more complex to analyse than unimodular materials. The motion equations are derived from Hamilton's energy equation and solved using a matrix technique. Abstract

Considering the volume of thermal energy consumed by humans, every breakthrough in thermal energy management strategies can have a significant social impact. Thermal energy storage (TES) serves an important purpose in thermal energy management. Thermal energy storage is critical for balancing energy demand as well as supply, ensuring system stability, along with maximizing the potential of intermittent renewable energy sources. It may not only maximize the use of renewable energy and reduce the price of electricity at nighttime, but also give flexibility as well as auxiliary services for addressing future power supply/demand concerns. Abstract

The machining of super alloy is still a very tedious task for the manufacturing industries due to their high stiffness and strength. The applications of such alloys are increasing day by day due to high reliability, repeatability and prolong life. However, the machining of such materials requires huge cost that directly affects the cost of product. Additionally, the optimized conditions that provide high material removal rate (MRR) as well as better surface integrity is indeed requirement for higher production. So, in this investigation the optimized condition for super alloy (EN-24 steel) as work piece are revealed during machining on wire EDM. The parametric study is based on pulse on time (Ton), peak current (Ip) and pulse off time (Toff) as variable parameters in order to achieve maximum MRR and minimum surface roughness. The investigation observed peak current as highest contributor on the MRR and surface roughness. The optimized condition for MRR is noticed as Ip(5 A), Ton(20 µ sec), Toff(15 µ) sec, whereas, for surface roughness the optimum condition observed as i.e. Ip as 1 A, Ton as 10 µ sec and Toff 5 µ sec. The result also suggested that the contribution of current on surface integrity is high and minimum value i.e. 6.39 micron is observed at 1A, whereas, maximum MRR i.e. 7.701 mm3/min is obtained for pulse on time as 20 µ sec. 47. Dirac States versus Nearly-Free-Electron States in Ternary C2As6(1–x)P6xMonolayers – A Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract

Using density functional theory-based calculations, we study the stability, geometric, and electronic properties of ternary C2As6(1–x)P6xmonolayers in a buckled honeycomb lattice. As the composition of P atoms (x) varies from 0 to 1 in steps of 1/6, we generated a total of 13 different possible geometric configurations. Binding energy calculations and ab initiomolecular dynamics simulations under ambient conditions predict the stability of the ternary monolayers. Their electronic band structure and density of states calculations reveal a rich variety of electronic properties, ranging from semimetal to semiconducting or metallic, depending on the value of xand the crystal symmetry. The ternary C2As6(1–x)P6xmonolayers possess two distinct electronic dispersions near the Fermi level: a linear dispersion (Dirac cone) around the high-symmetry Kpoint and a nearly-free-electron (NFE)-like parabolic dispersion around the high-symmetry Γ point in the Brillouin zone. Isoelectronic substitution breaks some spatial symmetries, causing the Dirac cones to become anisotropic and unpinned from the Kpoint. It also leads to the opening of a small energy gap between the Dirac cone states. In contrast, the nature of the NFE-like parabolic dispersion remains nearly unaltered by the crystal symmetry. Notably, the minimum energy of the NFE band and the effective mass of the electron can be tuned by the composition of the ternary monolayers. Detailed orbital analysis reveals that the contributions of sand pzorbitals of C atoms play a crucial role in tuning the NFE states. Overall, we reveal the novel and versatile electronic properties of the ternary monolayers and demonstrate their tunability via composition.

Abstract

Enhancing mixing efficiency in microscale processes for sensitive biomedical, pharmaceutical, and chemical applications is crucial, particularly when operating under low-velocity constraints. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the impact of various factors on microfluidic mixing within a circular mixing chamber micromixer, utilizing electroosmotic principles. The governing equations are solved numerically using the finite element technique-based solver. This research examines the effects of microchamber diameter (D), inlet velocity (uo), alternating current (AC) voltage amplitude (ϕo), and AC frequency (f) on fluid mixing dynamics. Several key findings are noted from this study. The reduction of the circular microchamber diameter decreases the linear distance between cross-reciprocally placed microelectrodes, resulting in increased electroosmosis force and mixing efficiency. The voltage amplitude within the specified range shows increased mixing efficiency when fluid species are combined at appropriate velocity and AC frequency. The highest mixing efficiency of 98.84% is achieved with the following parameters: flow velocity (uo) of 150 μm/s, AC frequency of 4 Hz, voltage amplitude of 500 mV, and microchamber diameter of 20 μm. At a frequency of 12 Hz and voltage amplitude of 500 mV, the mixing efficiency exceeds 94.66% across a wide range of input velocities (100–200 μm/s), enabling versatile control in microfluidic devices. The nonlinear interaction between electroosmotic flow and microchamber geometry significantly contributes to this enhanced mixing efficiency. These results demonstrate the potential for optimizing microfluidic mixing processes through careful parameter tuning, particularly in applications requiring high efficiency at low flow rates. Abstract

Despite extensive research on particulate matter (PM) pollution in India's Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), source apportionment remains challenging. This study investigates the effect of particulate matter (PM10)-associated water soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) on ambient air concentration across the middle IGP from January to December 2018. Moreover, the seasonal fluctuation and chemical characterization of PM10 were assessed for the year 2018. The results revealed a high concentration of PM10 (156 µg/m3), exceeding the WHO and National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) limits. The highest PM10 levels were observed during autumn, winter, summer, and the rainy season. The study identified SO42− and NH4+ as the most common WSIIs, constituting 46% and 23% of the total WSIIs. Source apportionment analysis indicated that street dust, biomass burning, and vehicle and industrial emissions together with secondary formation significantly contributed to IGP's PM pollution. Additionally, the investigation of air mass back trajectory suggests that air quality in IGP is largely influenced by eastern and western Maritime air masses originated from the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, Gujarat, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
