Context is essential in virtually all human activities. Yet some logical notions seem to be context-free. For example, the nature of the universal quantifier, the very meaning of “all”, seems to be independent of the context. At the same time, there are many quantifier expressions, and some are context-independent, while others are not. Similarly, purely logical consequence seems to be context-independent. Yet often we encounter strong inferences, good enough for practical purposes, but not valid. The two types of examples suggest a general problem: how to characterise the context-free logical concepts in their natural environment, that is, in the field of their context-dependent associates. A general Thesis on Quantifiers is formulated: among all quantifiers, the context-free ones are just those definable by the universal quantifier. The issue of inferences is treated following the approach introduced by Richard L. Epstein: valid ones are an extreme case, the result of the disappearance of context-dependence. This idea can be applied to an analysis of a form of abduction, called “reductive inference” in Polish literature on logic. A tentative Thesis on Inferences identifies the validity of a strong inference that is context-independent.

The Euclidean ideal of mathematics as well as all the foundational schools in the philosophy of mathematics have been contested by the new approach, called the “maverick” trend in the philosophy of mathematics. Several points made by its main representatives are mentioned – from the revisability of actual proofs to the stress on real mathematical practice as opposed to its idealized reconstruction. Main features of real proofs are then mentioned; for example, whether they are convincing, understandable, and/or explanatory. Therefore, the new approach questions Hilbert’s Thesis, according to which a correct mathematical proof is in principle reducible to a formal proof, based on explicit axioms and logic.

20. Die gegenwärtige Situation der Juden in Polen - Anzahl: verschwindend gering, Präsenz: bedeutend, Religiosität: zunehmend

- Abstract

The article discusses the author's perception of Canada and its Jewish community before and after reading a book about Canadian Jewry. The author initially viewed Canada as an addendum to the United States, with a small Jewish community. However, the book changed their perception by highlighting the size and diversity of the Canadian Jewish community, as well as the significant role of Yiddish. The author also compares the experiences of Polish Jews, who underwent a process of de-assimilation, with the more organically Jewish community in Canada. The article concludes by discussing the presence of large numbers of Ukrainians in Poland and the potential for a special connection between Poland and Canada. [Extracted from the article]

24. Theological Metaphors in Mathematics

History of scholarship and learning. The humanities ,AZ20-999 - Abstract
Examples of possible theological influences upon the development of mathematics are indicated. The best known connection can be found in the realm of infinite sets treated by us as known or graspable, which constitutes a divine-like approach. Also the move to treat infinite processes as if they were one finished object that can be identified with its limits is routine in mathematicians, but refers to seemingly super-human power. For centuries this was seen as wrong and even today some philosophers, for example Brian Rotman, talk critically about “theological mathematics”. Theological metaphors, like “God’s view”, are used even by contemporary mathematicians. While rarely appearing in official texts they are rather easily invoked in “the kitchen of mathematics”. There exist theories developing without the assumption of actual infinity the tools of classical mathematics needed for applications (For instance, Mycielski’s approach). Conclusion: mathematics could have developed in another way. Finally, several specific examples of historical situations are mentioned where, according to some authors, direct theological input into mathematics appeared: the possibility of the ritual genesis of arithmetic and geometry, the importance of the Indian religious background for the emergence of zero, the genesis of the theories of Cantor and Brouwer, the role of Name-worshipping for the research of the Moscow school of topology. Neither these examples nor the previous illustrations of theological metaphors provide a certain proof that religion or theology was directly influencing the development of mathematical ideas. They do suggest, however, common points and connections that merit further exploration.

Invasive treatment largely contributes to the reduction of mortality, cardiac complications and improves the quality of life of patients. Paying attention to the quality of life of people after cardiac episodes, can help to modify and achieve better therapeutic effects. The aim of a study: Assessment of the impact of health behaviours on the quality of life of patients following intervention cardiology procedures. Material and methods: The study was carried out on a group of 100 people, treated in the Department of Cardiology, the Department of Intensive Cardiac Supervision, the Hemodynamic Work of the Multidisciplinary Hospital of Ludwik Blazek in Inowroclaw. A questionnaire consisting of 22 single-choice questions was used to assess the quality of life of patients. Conclusions: 1. Close to 60% of respondents positively determines their quality of life. 2. The relationship between the effects of pro-health behaviours and quality of life has not been demonstrated. 3. The level of patient awareness of positive health behaviours is small, only a minority progresses according to their principles. 4. Unconsciousness of the health status of patients of the branch causes no reference to staff recommendations. 5. Alarming is prefering anti-health behaviour. Key words: quality of life, diseases of the cardiovascular system

The aim of the study is to assess the patients disability degree using the Extended Scale of Disability in various forms of multiple sclerosis. Material and Methods. The study was conducted on a group of 40 people suffering from multiple sclerosis, diagnosed and treated in the Neurology Clinic of the 10th Military Clinical Hospital in Bydgoszcz. In order to assess the patients disability degree, the Extended Disability Management Scale was used. The other information needed for statistical analysis was obtained from the clinical observation chart established for each patient. Results. The disability degree of patients with multiple sclerosis is determined by many variables. The Expanded Disability Rating Scale is a good tool to assess the degree of disability of patients with multiple sclerosis. Conclusion. 1. In the group of people with relapsing remitting MS, the average value of the degree of disability in the Expanded Disability Scale was the smallest. 2. The childbirth during the course of multiple sclerosis causes exacerbation of clinical symptoms immediately after the childbirth. 3. Optic neuritis as the initial symptom of multiple sclerosis predisposes to a milder course of the disease. 4. Symptoms of the first relapse of multiple sclerosis that support faster progression of disability are: lower limb paresis, sphincter dysfunction and balance disorders. 5. Multifocal symptomatology of the first relapse of multiple sclerosis speaks for faster progression of disability in relation to patients with the first relapse characterized only by one symptom. The main aim of the paper is analysis connection between hamstrings contracture and fault posture. Methods. Examination covered a group of 40 children aged 4-6 from nonpublic kindergarten “Buziaczek” in Bydgoszcz. The study was divided into two parts. The first part included: evaluation of child’s figure, analysis of specified anthropometric points and identification of posture defects in particular areas of child’s body. The second part of study involved tests: "the end of the toe" and "fingers-floor" and measurement of hip joint’s range of mobility. Results. Executed tests shown that 47,5% from examined group of children have fault posture. Occurrence of hamstrings contracture, which was diagnosed in 40%, disrupts pelvis balance causing oblique position of pelvis. Conclusion. 1. Posture faults are major problem in our population. During examination near half of the group possessed at least one of the fault posture. 2. Hamstrings contracture disrupts pelvis balance causing oblique position of pelvis. Further it leads to increase frequency of fault posture. 3. Proper rehabilitation can prevent hamstring contracture, in advance prevents also occurrence of fault posture. 4. Rehabilitation study, in which analysis of specified anthropometric points and a few functional tests will be a component, can detect and correct diagnose fault posture among children.

Methods: There was a study conducted on 150 people divided into three age groups: 25-30, 35-40 and 45-50 years old. The study was conducted by using its own questionnaire. The evaluated factors were health status, material status, life satisfaction, attitudes to drugs and drug use, ways of spending free time, the ratio of physical activity or cultivated forms of activity. In order to carry out the correlation analysis between the subjective assessment of quality of life and physical activity there were numerical indicators of quality of life and physical activity introduced. Results: The correlation between these indicators for all examined and for different age groups was assessed. The most evident correlation appeared in the oldest group. Conclusions: The examined are aware that taking up physical activity regularly is conducive to improving their well-being, physical condition and appearance. The subjective evaluation of the level of general fitness and the frequency of doing physical activity tend to fall with age. Physical activity influences not only the physical and psychological health, but also indirectly conditions the capability of succeeding in other areas of life.

Key words: rehabilitation, multiple sclerosis. WSTĘP. Stwardnienie rozsiane (łac. sclerosis multiplex, SM) jest to choroba o podłożu zapalno-demielinizacyjnym ośrodkowego układu nerwowego, w której dochodzi do wieloogniskowych zmian. Ewentualne znalezienie takich zależności w konsekwencji pozwoliłoby na wczesne ukierunkowanie procesu rehabilitacji dostosowanej do potrzeb pacjentów z określonym typem klinicznym choroby. MATERIAŁ I METODA. Zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego z wykorzystaniem standaryzowanych kwestionariuszy, typowych do oceny funkcji u chorych na stwardnienie rozsiane (EDSS, MFIS, MDST, HADS, EQUI – SCAL). Do obliczeń statystycznych wykorzystano program Statistica 10 firmy StatSoft. WYNIKI. INTRODUCTION. Multiple sclerosis (eng. Multiple sclerosis, MS) is an inflammatory-demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, wherein the multifocal changes occur. Etiopathogenesis is related to genetics and immune. Lesions are characterized by rapid progression and are mainly found in the white matter, brainstem, cerebellum, spinal cord and optic nerve. In remission, remyelination occurs, following which the inflammation subsides. Multiple sclerosis can run with or without relapses. Clinical form of primary progressive (PPMS), multiple sclerosis occurring without relapses, other clinical forms: relapsing - remitting (RRMS), secondary progressive (SPMS) and progressive - relapsing (PRMS) are characterized by the appearance of relapses, a form of benign (BNMS) may be present without relapses. OBJECTIVES. The main objective of this study was to examine correlations between the diversity of physical and social functions in patients with multiple sclerosis and the type and form of the disease. Possible to find such relations, in consequence, would enable an early orientation of rehabilitation process for needs of patients with a particular type and form of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The study involved 313 patients (215 women and 98 men) diagnosed with multiple sclerosis staying on the four-week rehabilitation courses at the Pope John Paul II Center of Rehabilitation for People with Multiple Sclerosis in Borne Sulinowo. The method of diagnostic survey, based on a survey technique using standardized scales and questionnaires to assess the typical functions in patients with multiple sclerosis (EDSS, MFIS, MDST, HADS, EQUI - SCAL). For the statistical calculation StatSoft Statistica 10 was used. RESULTS. On the basis of the Kruskal – Wallis test statistically significant differences in the level of physical failure were found - EDSS (p CONCLUSIONS. 1. The level of fatigue, imbalances, motor failure experienced by the patient depends on the clinical form of MS and shows no variation with respect to the type of disease. 2. Level of anxiety and depression symptoms does not have diversity in terms of form of multiple sclerosis. 3. Despite the prevalence of certain differentiation in some of the physical and social functions depending on the form and type of multiple sclerosis, it seems difficult to orientate rehabilitation based on these assumptions. It seems more important to individualize the process based on the nature and pace of the disease and taking into account the current patient's symptoms.

Cerebral palsy is one of the most common causes of disability among children. When predicting the future of a child, its functioning mode and locomotion, many factors should be considered, i.e. the degree of brain injury, the moment of implementing therapy, cognitive abilities of the child, level of mental retardation, epileptic seizures, hearing and vision impairment, etc. The goal of the therapy and its effectiveness depends on the appropriate assessment, and this determines the prediction of the patient’s future. The Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) can be a useful tool in predicting a child’s functional performance. Keywords: CP, prediction

The alleged proof of the non-mechanical, or non-computational, character of the human mind based on Gödel's incompleteness theorem is revisited. Its history is reviewed. The proof, also known as the Lucas argument and the Penrose argument, is refuted. It is claimed, following Gödel himself and other leading logicians, that antimechanism is not implied by Gödel's theorems alone. The present paper sets out this refutation in its strongest form, demonstrating general theorems implying the inconsistency of Lucas's arithmetic and the semantic inadequacy of Penrose's arithmetic. On the other hand, the limitations to our capacity for mechanizing or programming the mind are also indicated, together with two other corollaries of Gödel's theorems: that we cannot prove that we are consistent (Gödel's Unknowability Thesis), and that we cannot fully describe our notion of a natural number. - Abstract
An archive of sorts can exist within one’s body, cf. memory or DNA. Hidden archive containing the knowledge of one’s ancestors can sometimes induce a change of identity. Some Poles with Jewish roots have gone the way of de-assimilation, or the reversal of assimilation. Almost never does it lead to de-Polonizasummariestion. At present, virtually all Polish Jews exist as Jews due to the process of de-assimilation. In the paper, a list of circumstances facilitating the process is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
By limiting available measures we render ourselves weaker, but if we attain our goal then we demonstrate strength - the sort that would otherwise remain concealed. This is the case in classical mountain climbing and mathematics. First examples are to be found in the Bible: the Torah tells the story of Jacob and Esau: the strength of the latter gives way to the weakness of the former. Nonetheless, subsequently Jacob's strength is demonstrated; obviously, his mission calls for self-restriction. True, an unconstrained battle waged in accordance with the ideal of non-violence is extremely difficult. Even Gandhi, its most renowned propagator, was well of aware of this fact. The limitation of this ideal in relation to the situation of the Jews was indicated by Martin Buber, otherwise a radical adherent of non-violence solutions worth applying whenever it is possible. A new epoch - that of messianism - must take place so that weakness could become the prime source of strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Describe something comprehensively with words? As a rule, it suffices to describe to a degree necessary for understanding. God is totally elusive. Infinity is partly so, and the same is even true of natural numbers, premonitions, hopes, and atmosphere. Even if something can be expressed it is still impossible to grasp numerous aspects. This is even the case when we limit ourselves to issues well known to everyone around us and, presumably, experienced by all in the same way or at the very least extremely similarly. My example pertains to one of the most banal forms of our behaviour: saying "good day" to others on a mountain trail. If I am correct, then there unavoidably appears a sui generis "apophatic anthropology": we experience man and human issues without differing among each other - if not in reference to all people then at least to an accepted group - but are incapable of describing this.
