1. Rapid post-disaster infrastructure damage characterisation enabled by remote sensing and deep learning technologies -- a tiered approach

Abstract

Critical infrastructure, such as transport networks and bridges, are systematically targeted during wars and suffer damage during extensive natural disasters because it is vital for enabling connectivity and transportation of people and goods, and hence, underpins national and international economic growth. Mass destruction of transport assets, in conjunction with minimal or no accessibility in the wake of natural and anthropogenic disasters, prevents us from delivering rapid recovery and adaptation. As a result, systemic operability is drastically reduced, leading to low levels of resilience. Thus, there is a need for rapid assessment of its condition to allow for informed decision-making for restoration prioritisation. A solution to this challenge is to use technology that enables stand-off observations. Nevertheless, no methods exist for automated characterisation of damage at multiple scales, i.e. regional (e.g., network), asset (e.g., bridges), and structural (e.g., road pavement) scales. We propose a methodology based on an integrated, multi-scale tiered approach to fill this capability gap. In doing so, we demonstrate how automated damage characterisation can be enabled by fit-for-purpose digital technologies. Next, the methodology is applied and validated to a case study in Ukraine that includes 17 bridges, damaged by human targeted interventions. From regional to component scale, we deploy technology to integrate assessments using Sentinel-1 SAR images, crowdsourced information, and high-resolution images for deep learning to facilitate automatic damage detection and characterisation. 22. Probability distributions of geotechnical properties for heterogeneous lignite mine spoils.

Abstract

During surface coal mining, large amounts of overburden waste materials, known as spoils, are excavated and dumped, creating massive heaps. The sustainable management of these areas is a global priority, but a comprehensive geotechnical characterization has not yet been achieved due to limited research on the spoils' geotechnical properties. This study conducts an advanced statistical analysis of lignite mine spoil materials from a large heap in Greece to determine suitable probability distributions. Five distributions - normal, lognormal, Weibull (2 and 3 parameters), and Gamma - were evaluated, considering the high variability of spoil material properties. The lognormal and Weibull distributions were found to best fit most geotechnical parameters, except for cohesion, which showed an uncommon distribution. In some cases, the normal distribution can be used for a simplified analysis. The findings can guide the analysis of spoil materials, as advanced numerical and stochastic methods are essential for robust geotechnical design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Numerical analysis of rainfall effects on the slope stability of open pit coal mines

Abstract

As the world transitions away from coal, vast areas of closed coal mines and waste dumps must be appropriately reclaimed. One critical element for these areas’ safety is slope stability, given the massive slopes of these mines and dumps. This work examines the effect of extreme rainfall on coal mines’ slopestability by incorporating unsaturated soil mechanics principles in a practical way. Past extreme rainfall events recorded for a Greek lignite mining area were used, and climate projections concluded that this intensity is not expected to change. Then, rainfall infiltration was simulated using the Finite Element Method; a typical slope was employed concerning a lignite mining excavation of 200m height and 14° inclination on fine-grained soils. Finally, the stability was calculated using the Limit Equilibrium Method. Rainfall infiltration caused the Safety Factor to decrease, leading to failure. The groundwater rose at theslope’s face from the slope’s toe upwards and led to the development of a smaller and more local than the initial (before rainfall) sliding surface with a lower Safety Factor. Although this is a smaller surface than the initial one, it is still more than 50m high, proposing a significant hazard with severe consequences for the area.

Abstract

Background: It is widely acknowledged that carbon dioxide (CO 2), a greenhouse gas, is largely responsible for climatic changes that can lead to warming or cooling in various places. This disturbs natural processes, creating instability and fragility of natural and social ecosystems. To combat climate change, without compromising technology advancements and maintaining production costs at acceptable levels, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies can be deployed to advance a non-disruptive energy transition. Capturing CO 2 from industrial processes such as thermoelectric power stations, refineries, and cement factories and storing it in geological mediums is becoming a mature technology. Part of the Mesohellenic Basin, situated in Greek territory, is proposed as a potential area for CO 2 storage in saline aquifers. This follows work previously done in the StrategyCCUS project, funded by the EU. The work is progressing under the Pilot Strategy, funded by the EU. Methods: The current investigation includes geomechanical and petrophysical methods to characterise sedimentary formations for their potential to hold CO 2 underground. Results: Samples were found to have both low porosity and permeability while the corresponding uniaxial strength for the Tsotyli formation was 22 MPa, for Eptechori 35 MPa and Pentalofo 74 MPa. Conclusions: The samples investigated indicate the potential to act as rock caps due to low porosity and permeability, but fluid pressure within the rock should remain within specified limits; otherwise, the rock may easily fracture and result in CO2 leakage or/and deform to allow the flow of CO 2. Further investigation is needed to identify reservoir rocks as well more sampling to allow for statistically significant results.

[EN] Over the last decade, Europe has experienced a sharp increase in infrastructure expenditure due to the severe and frequent natural phenomena related to climate change. Local consequences, such as habitat destruction, finite freshwater availability and food scarcity exert significant pressure on the available ecological space. Therefore, there is a growing interest in assessing risks and vulnerabilities to climate change, which has already led to a wide range of impacts on environmental systems and society, including destabilising security. Increased environmental, social, and financial damage costs are expected in the future. Many of these imminent or ongoing challenges are related to the overexploitation of resources and the energy transition, requiring a more holistic approach to encouraging new technologies, that involves a whole-of-society approach and stakeholder participation. State-of-the-art CCUS and hydrogen energy technologies, offer sustainable solutions to mitigate the current situation, allowing a reduction in carbon emissions, a transition towards a low-carbon economy, and an increased overall resilience of the international community to climate change.

Abstract

Three different types of biomass samples from Greece were studied (reed, olive kernel, and sawdust) and compared to lignite samples from coal deposits of Western Macedonia, Greece. All biomass samples exhibit higher calorific values (both as received and in dry basis) not only from the studied lignite but also from many other Greek coals. Despite its lower C content on a dry ash-free (daf) basis, the sawdust sample exhibits the highest calorific values, probably due to its lower total moisture content. It also exhibits the lower S and Cl content. As far as the ash content, reed and olive kernel presented higher values than the sawdust. Sylvite was identified in the biomass ashes. The presence of sylvite indicates the abundance of K in the organic matter that bonds with Cl and S during combustion. This explains the formation of arcanite that was identified in the reed and the olive kernel ashes. Abstract

This review presents a mineralogical and physicochemical comparison of coal seams located in the regions of Northwest and Central Greece. The comparison extends to the fly ash derivatives from the coal combustion for energy production, in the cases where data are available. Coal occurrences from Northwest Greece tend to exhibit higher content of rare earth elements (REE) compared to those of Central Greece. Moreover, fly ash products show similar trends in Light-REE compared to their coal parent rocks. The observed REE distribution seems to be correlated with the occurrence of specific minerals such as allanite, monazite, as well as with Fe-contents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
