Hypothesis: The question of why aqueous solutions of some surfactants demonstrate a rapid spreading (superspreading) over hydrophobic solid substrates, while solutions of other similar surfactants do not, has no definitive explanation despite numerous previous studies. The suggested hypothesis for this study assumes that once the spreading coefficient of surfactant is positive, there is a concentration range for solutions of any surfactant which demonstrates rapid spreading. As it is impossible to calculate spreading coefficients for solid substrates, we compare the spreading performance of known superspreaders and non-superspreaders on liquid (oil) substrate., Experiments: The kinetics of spreading of aqueous solutions of a series of branched ionic surfactants and non-ionic trisiloxane surfactants on two liquid substrates was studied and compared with the spreading of a surfactant-free liquid, silicone oil. Both dynamic and equilibrium spreading coefficients were calculated using measured surface and interfacial tensions., Findings: There is no difference in spreading rate on liquid substrate between solutions of surfactants proven as superspreaders (while spreading on solid substrate) or non-superspreaders. A rapid spreading (superspreading) with the characteristic rate of spreading O(10 2 -10 3 ) mm 2 /s occurs if the dynamic spreading coefficients exceeds the positive threshold value. If the dynamic spreading coefficient is negative or slightly positive, complete wetting still occurs, but the spreading is slow with the spreading rate is O(1) mm 2 /s. Spreading exponents for surfactant solutions in the rapid spreading regime are considerably larger than for the surfactant-free liquid. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) compromises walking and physical activity, which results in further loss of skeletal muscle. The cross-sectional area of the thigh muscle has been shown to be correlated with systemic skeletal muscle volume. In our previous pilot study, we observed an increase in thigh muscle mass following endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with proximal vascular lesions affecting the aortoiliac and femoropopliteal arteries. Considering the potential interactions between skeletal muscle, lipid profile, and glucose metabolism, we aimed to investigate the relationship between thigh muscle mass and apolipoproteins as well as glucose metabolism in PAD patients undergoing EVT. This study is a prespecified sub-study conducted as part of a pilot study. We prospectively enrolled 22 symptomatic patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and above-the-knee lesions, specifically involving the blood vessels supplying the thigh muscle. The mid-thigh muscle area was measured with computed tomography before and 6 months after undergoing EVT. Concurrently, we measured levels of apolipoproteins A1 (Apo A1) and B (Apo B), fasting blood glucose, 2 h post-load blood glucose (using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test), and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Changes in thigh muscle area (delta muscle area: 2.5 ± 8.1 cm 2 ) did not show significant correlations with changes in Apo A1, Apo B, fasting glucose, 2 h post-oral glucose tolerance test blood glucose, HbA1c, or Rutherford classification. However, among patients who experienced an increase in thigh muscle area following EVT (delta muscle area: 8.41 ± 5.93 cm 2 ), there was a significant increase in Apo A1 (pre: 121.8 ± 15.1 mg/dL, 6 months: 136.5 ± 19.5 mg/dL, p < 0.001), while Apo B remained unchanged (pre: 76.4 ± 19.2 mg/dL, 6 months: 80.5 ± 4.9 mg/dL). Additionally, post-oral glucose tolerance test 2 h blood glucose levels showed a decrease (pre: 189.7 ± 67.5 mg/dL, 6 months: 170.6 ± 69.7 mg/dL, p = 0.075). Patients who exhibited an increase in thigh muscle area demonstrated more favorable metabolic changes compared to those with a decrease in thigh muscle area (delta muscle area: -4.67 ± 2.41 cm 2 ). This pilot sub-study provides insights into the effects of EVT on thigh muscle, apolipoproteins, and glucose metabolism in patients with PAD and above-the-knee lesions. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and establish their clinical significance. Background and Aims: As the population of aging societies continues to grow, the prevalence of complex coronary artery diseases, including calcification, is expected to increase. Rotational atherectomy (RA) is an essential technique for treating calcified lesions. This study aimed to assess the usefulness of the drilling noise produced during rotablation as a parameter for evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the procedure., Methods: A human body model mimicking calcified stenotic coronary lesions was constructed using plastic resin, and burrs of sizes 1.25 and 1.5 mm were utilized. To identify the noise source during rotablation, we activated the ROTAPRO™ rotablator at a rotational speed of 180,000 rpm, recording the noise near the burr (inside the mock model) and advancer (outside). In addition to regular operation, we simulated two major complications: burr entrapment and guidewire transection. The drilling noise recorded in Waveform Audio File Format files was converted into spectrograms for analysis and an autoencoder analyzed the image data for anomalies., Results: The drilling noise from both inside and outside the mock model was predominantly within the 3000 Hz frequency domain. During standard operation, intermittent noise within this range was observed. However, during simulated complications, there were noticeable changes: a drop to 2000 Hz during burr entrapment and a distinct squealing noise during guidewire transection. Background: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is a high-risk factor for stent thrombosis, but little is known about the difference in neointimal healing between CTO and non-CTO lesions regarding implanted stents. We investigated factors affecting neointimal healing after stent implantation for CTO and non-CTO lesions using angioscopy., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 106 stents in 85 consecutive patients between March 2016 and July 2020. Their average age was 68 ± 11 years, and participants (73 male and 12 female) underwent follow-up angiography and angioscopy 1 year after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The stents (n = 106) were divided into three groups according to the lesion status at the previous PCI: CTO (n = 17), acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (n = 35), and stable coronary artery disease without CTO or non-CTO (n = 54)., Results: The neointimal stent coverage grade was significantly lower in the CTO and ACS groups than in the non-CTO group (0.4 ± 0.5, 0.9 ± 0.8, and 1.4 ± 0.8, respectively, p < 0.001). Thrombi were significantly more frequent in CTO and ACS than in non-CTO (71 %, 51 %, and 15 %, respectively, p < 0.001). The yellow grade in CTO was comparable to that in ACS but significantly higher in CTO than in non-CTO (CTO vs. ACS vs. non-CTO 1.5 ± 0.7, 1.4 ± 0.6, and 0.9 ± 0.7, respectively, p = 0.007)., Conclusions: Delayed healing occurs in stents implanted for CTO lesions. Problem: Systemic inflammation induced by infection, which is associated with testicular inflammation, predisposes males to subfertility. Recently, the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat-, and pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome was identified as a key mediator of inflammation, and excessive activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome was shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of a wide variety of diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying infectious inflammation in the testis remain unclear. We investigated the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced systemic inflammation on the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in murine testes., Method of Study: We performed in vivo and in vitro studies using an LPS-induced model of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and testicular inflammation., Results: Intraperitoneal administration of LPS significantly impaired sperm motility in the epididymis of wild type (WT) and NLRP3-knockout (KO) mice. LPS administration stimulated interleukin (IL)-1β production and secretion in the testes of WT mice, and these adverse effects were improved in the testes of NLRP3-KO mice. LPS administration also stimulated neutrophil infiltration as well as its chemoattractant C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) in WT testes, which were suppressed in NLRP3-KO testes. In in vitro cell culture, treatment with LPS and NLRP3 inflammasome activation significantly induced IL-1β and CCL2 secretion from WT but not NLRP3-KO testicular cells., Conclusions: Taken together, our results suggest that testicular cells have the potential to secrete IL-1β and CCL2 in an NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent manner and that these cytokines from the testis may further exacerbate testicular function, resulting in subfertility during infectious diseases., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. The immune system contributes to the regulation of pregnancy, and the disruption of well-controlled immune functions leads to pregnancy complications. Recently, the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat-, and pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome mechanisms [(a protein complex of NLRP3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC), and caspase-1)] have been reported to play roles in controlling placental inflammation involved in pregnancy pathologies. The ketone body β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) can suppress NLRP3 inflammasome activation and improve various inflammatory diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that BHB could suppress activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in the placenta, resulting in the improvement of pregnancy complications. In human placental tissue culture, treatment with BHB suppressed the secretion levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and IL-8, but did not affect the mRNA expression levels of NLRP3 inflammasome-associated factors. Treatment with BHB reduced IL-1β secretion and the amount of mature IL-1β protein induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in the placenta. In human trophoblast cells, BHB reduced ASC and activated-caspase-1 expression, resulting in the inhibition of IL-1β secretion. To investigate the effect of BHB during pregnancy, we used an animal model of LPS (100 μg/kg intraperitoneally [i.p.] on gestational day 14)-induced pregnancy complications. Administration of BHB (100 mg/kg i.p.) clearly suppressed the absorption rate and IL-1β production in the placenta induced by LPS in pregnant mice. Moreover, LPS-induced pregnancy abnormalities were improved in NLRP3-deficient mice. Aims: To investigate the variability between site and core laboratory (CL) calculation of the anatomical SYNTAX score (SS) based on coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) alone and functional SS based on coronary CTA and fractional flow reserve derived from computed tomography (FFRCT) in the SYNTAX III trial., Methods and Results: The SYNTAX III trial was a multicentre, international study that included 223 patients with three-vessel disease with or without left main involvement. Functional SS was computed by subtracting non-flow limiting stenoses (FFRCT > 0.80) from anatomical SS. SS was combined with clinical information to generate the SYNTAX score II (SS II) that provides treatment recommendations. The mean anatomical SS based on coronary CTA alone was 33.4 ± 12.7 by sites and 37.1 ± 13.4 by CL (P < 0.001). The mean functional SS based on coronary CTA and FFRCT was 30.5 ± 13.0 by sites and 33.3 ± 13.6 by CL (P < 0.001). The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.49 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.37-0.59) in anatomical SS and 0.62 (95% CI 0.52-0.70) in functional SS. The Cohen's κ comparing treatment recommendation between sites and CL was 0.68 (95% CI 0.58-0.78) based on anatomical SS and 0.71 (95% CI 0.60-0.82) based on functional SS., Conclusion: The mean anatomical SS derived from coronary CTA alone and functional SS based on coronary CTA and FFRCT were higher when assessed by the CL than by the sites themselves. Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) causes fatal vascular complications due to vascular fragility. However, invasive therapeutic procedures are generally avoided except in emergencies. We report a case of vEDS presenting with rapid expansion of a hepatic arterial aneurysm successfully treated using prophylactic endovascular therapy. A 43-year-old woman with vEDS confirmed by genetic testing was hospitalized for a symptomatic hepatic arterial aneurysm that expanded rapidly within a week. Prophylactic coil embolization was then successfully performed. β3-Adrenergic receptor expression is enhanced in the failing heart, but its functional effects are unclear. We tested the hypothesis that a β 3-agonist improves left ventricular (LV) performance in heart failure. We examined the chronic effects of a β 3-agonist in the angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced cardiomyopathy mouse model. C57BL/6J mice were treated with Ang II alone or Ang II + BRL 37344 ( β 3-agonist, BRL) for 4 weeks. Systolic blood pressure in conscious mice was significantly elevated in Ang II and Ang II + BRL mice compared with control mice. Heart rate was not different among the three groups. Systolic performance parameters that were measured by echocardiography and an LV catheter were similar among the groups. LV end-diastolic pressure and end-diastolic pressure-volume relationships were higher in Ang II mice compared with control mice. However, the increase in these parameters was prevented in Ang II + BRL mice, which suggested improvement in myocardial stiffness by BRL. Pathologic analysis showed that LV hypertrophy was induced in Ang II mice and failed to be prevented by BRL. However, increased collagen I/III synthesis, cardiac fibrosis, and lung congestion observed in Ang II mice were inhibited by BRL treatment. The cardioprotective benefits of BRL were associated with downregulation of transforming growth factor- β 1 expression and phosphorylated-Smad2/3. Chronic infusion of a β 3-agonist has a beneficial effect on LV diastolic function independent of blood pressure in the Ang II-induced cardiomyopathy mouse model. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Chronic infusion of a β 3-adrenergic receptor agonist attenuates cardiac fibrosis and improves diastolic dysfunction independently of blood pressure in an angiotensin II-induced hypertensive mouse model. Purpose: Angiopoietin (Ang), a ligand of the endothelium-specific receptor Tie-2 system, is associated with tumor growth and progression that depend on angiogenesis. The present study aimed to investigate the predictive potential of angiopoietin factors in incurable stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who have undergone primary tumor resection., Methods: The study included 40 consecutive patients with incurable stage IV CRC who underwent primary tumor resection at our hospital between 2011 and 2015. Patients were divided into subgroups of low and high Ang-1, Ang-2, and Tie-2. Patient age and sex, tumor location, TNM stages, vascular invasion, chemotherapy, and overall survival were assessed., Results: The cut-off values of Ang-1, Ang-2, and Tie-2 were 0.4, 1.8, and 15.0 ng/mL, respectively. Overall survival was significantly longer in the low Ang-2 group than in the high Ang-2 group. High Ang-2 levels were associated with age, N stage, and chemotherapy. Immunofluorescent staining of Ang-2 revealed that endothelial cells and cancer cells expressed Ang-2 in each case., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the serum Ang-2 level is associated with disease progression and is an important predictor of mortality in incurable stage IV CRC patients. Thus, it may be a useful prognostic biomarker in these patients.

Copy number alterations detected by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) can lead to the identification of novel cancer-related genes. We analyzed chromosomal aberrations in a set of 100 human primary colorectal cancers (CRCs) using CGH and found a solute carrier (SLC) 7A1 gene, which encodes cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT1) with 14 putative transmembrane domains, in a chromosome region (13q12.3) with a high frequency of gene amplifications. SLC7A1/CAT1 is a transporter responsible for the uptake of cationic amino acids (arginine, lysine, and ornithine) essential for cellular growth. Microarray and PCR analyses have revealed that mRNA transcribed from CAT1 is overexpressed in more than 70% of human CRC samples, and RNA interference-mediated knockdown of CAT1 inhibited the cell growth of CRCs. Rats were immunized with rat hepatoma cells expressing CAT1 tagged with green fluorescent protein (GFP), and rat splenocytes were fused with mouse myeloma cells. Five rat monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (CA1 ~ CA5) reacting with HEK293 cells expressing CAT1-GFP in a GFP expression-dependent manner were selected from established hybridoma clones. Novel anti-CAT1 mAbs selectively reacted with human CRC tumor tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues according to immuno-histochemical staining and bound strongly to numerous human cancer cell lines by flow cytometry. Anti-CAT1 mAbs exhibited internalization activity, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and migration inhibition activity against CRC cell lines. Background and Aims: Peripheral artery disease (PAD), intermittent claudication, and impaired mobility contribute to the loss of skeletal muscle. This study investigated the impact of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients suffering from PAD above the knee and its relation to baseline glycemic control., Methods and Results: Mid-thigh muscle volume was measured before EVT, 3 months after EVT and 6 months after EVT. Mid-thigh muscle volumes of ipsilateral PAD patients with ischemic and non-ischemic legs were compared. Correlations between total thigh muscle volume and clinical characteristics were analyzed using univariable and multivariable analysis. Overall, thigh muscle volume increased after EVT. The mid-thigh muscle volume was significantly lower in patients with ipsilateral lesions and in those with ischemic lower limbs. The thigh muscle volume of those with ischemic lower limbs increased after EVT. Baseline glycated hemoglobin was the only factor that was negatively correlated with changes in the muscle volume after EVT. Muscle volume significantly increased in normoglycemic HbA1c<6.5% (47 mmol/mol) patients. There was no significant alteration in the muscle volume of hyperglycemic HbA1c ≥ 6.5% patients., Conclusion: Ischemic muscle atrophy was ameliorated after EVT in normoglycemic patients. Histamine H 3 receptor antagonists/inverse agonists are known to enhance the activity of histaminergic neurons in the brain, thereby promoting arousal and cognition. Here, we report the in vitro and in vivo pharmacological profiles for a newly synthesized histamine H 3 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist: [1-(4-{3-[(2 R )-2-methylpyrrolidin-1-yl]propoxy}phenyl)-1 H -pyrazol-4-yl](morpholin-4-yl)methanone monohydrochloride (enerisant hydrochloride). In vitro assays showed that enerisant was a competitive antagonist/inverse agonist with a high affinity and selectivity for human and rat histamine H 3 receptors. Enerisant showed antagonist activity in vivo, as assessed using R - α -methylhistamine (a histamine H 3 receptor agonist)-induced dipsogenia, and occupied the histamine H 3 receptor in the frontal cortex in a dose-dependent manner. Enerisant also enhanced the extracellular levels of histamine in the posterior hypothalamus and the levels of dopamine and acetylcholine in the medial prefrontal cortex of rats. Enerisant exerted a procognitive effect or reversed scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in a social recognition test and a novel object recognition test in rats at doses at which less than 50% of the histamine H 3 receptor were occupied (0.03-0.3 mg/kg, p.o.). In contrast, higher doses (3-10 mg/kg, p.o.) at which nearly all the histamine H 3 receptors were occupied were needed to exert wake-promoting effects in rats. These results indicate that enerisant is a potent and selective histamine H 3 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist with the potential to promote arousal and procognition in rats. Moreover, the results also suggest that the histamine H 3 receptor occupancy required to exert a pharmacological effect may vary depending on the domain that is being tested. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Enerisant is a novel histamine H 3 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist that exerts wake-promoting and procognitive effects in addition to increasing the release of neurotransmitters related to these pharmacological effects in rodents. Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of ticagrelor monotherapy following 1-month dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for bifurcation lesions., Methods: GLOBAL LEADERS was a randomized, superiority, all-comers trial comparing 1-month DAPT with ticagrelor and aspirin followed by 23-month ticagrelor monotherapy (experimental treatment) with standard 12-month DAPT followed by 12-month aspirin monotherapy (reference treatment) in patients treated with a biolimus A9-eluting stent. The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death or new Q-wave myocardial infarction (MI) at 2 years., Results: Among the 15,845 patients included in this subgroup analysis, 2,498 patients (15.8%) underwent PCI for at least one bifurcation lesion. The incidence of the primary endpoint was similar between the bifurcation and nonbifurcation groups (4.7 vs. 4.0%, p = .083). The experimental treatment had no significant effect on the primary endpoint according to the presence/absence of a bifurcation lesion (bifurcation: hazard ratio [HR]: 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.51-1.07; nonbifurcation: HR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.76-1.07, p for interaction = .343), but was associated with significant reduction in definite or probable stent thrombosis (p for interaction = .022) and significant excess of stroke (p for interaction = .018) when compared with the reference treatment., Conclusions: After PCI for bifurcation lesions using 1-month of DAPT followed by ticagrelor monotherapy for 23 months did not demonstrate explicit benefit regarding all-cause death or new Q-wave MI as in the overall trial., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Background: Bifurcation PCI is associated with a lower rate of procedural success, especially in multivessel disease patients. We aimed to determine the impact of bifurcation treatment on 2-years clinical outcomes when a state-of-the-art PCI strategy (heart team decision-making using the SYNTAX score II, physiology guided coronary stenosis assessment, thin strut bioresorbable polymer drug-eluting stent, and intravascular ultrasound guidance) is followed., Methods: Three-vessel disease patients enrolled in the SYNTAX II trial (n = 454) were categorized in patients with (a) ≥1 treated bifurcation (n = 126), and (b) without bifurcation (n = 281). The primary endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse cardio and cerebrovascular events (MACCE-a composite of all-cause death, stroke, any myocardial infarction, or any revascularization) at 2 years. Secondary endpoints were the occurrence of target lesion failure (TLF) defined as cardiac death, target-vessel myocardial infarction and ischemia-driven target lesion revascularization, and the individual components of the composite primary endpoint, as well as stent thrombosis., Results: A total of 145 bifurcation were treated in 126 patients. At 2 years, MACCE occurred in 75/407 patients (20.7% for bifurcation versus 17.5% for nonbifurcation, hazard ratio [HR] of 1.28, CI95% 0.78-2.08, p = .32). TLF presented a trend toward higher occurrence in bifurcation (16.8% vs. 10.8%, HR 1.75, CI95% 0.99-3.09, p = .053). Emerging evidence supports the theory that tumor cell clusters efficiently metastasize to distant organs. However, the roles of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in metastasizing tumor cell clusters have not yet been fully elucidated. To investigate this issue, tumor fragments were dissected from 40 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and implanted subcutaneously into immunodeficient mice. We observed that tumors developed from the tumor fragments obtained from 28 of the 40 CRC patients. The tumors were then dissociated into cell suspensions to be orthotopically injected into secondary mice. The tumors from 13 of the 28 patients progressed. Furthermore, metastases formed spontaneously in the liver and lungs from the tumor fragments obtained from 8 of these 13 patients. Moreover, employing a mathematical analysis, we showed that tumor cell clusters seeded these metastases significantly more often than did single tumor cells. Membrane E-cadherin- and nuclear ZEB1-positive tumor cells indicating the hybrid epithelial/mesenchymal state were also detected in primary tumors of various CRC patients, and in the corresponding patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) and circulating tumor cell clusters in the bloodstreams of mice. In contrast, ZEB1 staining was barely detectable in the patient-matched liver metastases presumably developing through mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition. Inhibition of E-cadherin or ZEB1 expression by shRNA notably prevented the PDX-derived tumor organoids from colonizing the liver, when injected intrasplenically into mice, indicating E-cadherin and ZEB1 expressions to be required for their metastatic colonization. The current study clarified the accuracy of a circulating tumor cell (CTC) detection system to diagnose colorectal cancer using blood samples. The system uses the 'polymeric CTC-chip,' (CTC-chip), which is a microfluidic device that is used for CTC isolation. CTCs are considered sensitive diagnostic biomarkers. However, their concentration in the peripheral blood is low and requires highly sensitive and specific capturing techniques. The capture efficiency of the polymeric CTC-chip was first assessed using cell suspensions of the colorectal cancer cell line HCT-116, which was reported as 90.9% in a phosphate-buffered saline suspension and 65.0% in the blood. The CTC-chip was then used to detect CTCs in blood samples obtained from 13 patients with stage II-IV colorectal cancer. On average, the CTCs/ml was lower in patients with stages II and III colorectal cancer (3.3±2.3) than in those with stage IV (7.0±6.2). In patients with stages II-IV, 92% had ≥1 CTC per ml, which was significantly higher than the positive rate (15%) detected using the carbohydrate antigen 19-9 test (CA19-9). Furthermore, CTCs were detected in all patients with stage II and III colorectal cancer, including a number of patients with negative results for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CA19-9 tests. With the polymeric CTC-chip detection system, CTCs can be effective cancer markers, particularly for patients with stage II and III colorectal cancer who often exhibit negative conventional serum marker test results. Importance: Women experience worse ischemic and bleeding outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)., Objectives: To assess the association of sex with patient outcomes at 2 years after contemporary PCI and with the efficacy and safety of 2 antiplatelet strategies., Design, Setting, and Participants: This study is a prespecified subgroup analysis of the investigator-initiated, prospective, randomized GLOBAL LEADERS study evaluating 2 strategies of antiplatelet therapy after PCI in an unselected population including 130 secondary/tertiary care hospitals in different countries. The main study enrolled 15 991 unselected patients undergoing PCI between July 2013 and November 2015. Patients had an outpatient clinic visit at 30 days and 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after the index procedure. Data were analyzed between January 1, 2019, and March 31, 2019., Interventions: Eligible patients were randomized to either the experimental or reference antiplatelet strategy. Experimental strategy consisted of 1 month of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) followed by 23 months of ticagrelor monotherapy, while the reference strategy comprised of 12 months of DAPT followed by 12 months of aspirin monotherapy., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary efficacy end point was the composite of all-cause mortality and new Q-wave myocardial infarction at 2 years. The secondary safety end point was Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 or 5 bleeding., Results: Of the 15 968 patients included in this study, 3714 (23.3%) were women. The risk of the primary end point at 2 years was similar between women and men (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.00; 95% CI, 0.83-1.20). Compared with men, women had higher risk of Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 or 5 bleeding (adjusted HR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.04-1.67) and hemorrhagic stroke at 2 years (adjusted HR, 4.76; 95% CI, 1.92-11.81). At 2 years, there was no between-sex difference in the efficacy and safety of the 2 antiplatelet strategies. At 1 year, compared with DAPT, ticagrelor monotherapy was associated with a lower risk of bleeding in men (HR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.53-0.98) but not in women (HR, 1.23; 95% CI, 0.80-1.89; P for interaction = .045)., Conclusions and Relevance: Compared with men, women experienced a higher risk of bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke after PCI. Q-wave myocardial infarction (QWMI) comprises 2 entities. First, a clinically evident MI, which can occur spontaneously or be related to a coronary procedure. Second, silent MI which is incidentally detected on serial electrocardiographic (ECG) assessment. The prevalence of silent MI after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the drug-eluting stent era has not been fully investigated. The GLOBAL LEADERS is an all-comers multicenter trial which randomized 15,991 patients who underwent PCI to 2 antiplatelet treatment strategies. The primary end point was a composite of all-cause death or nonfatal new QWMI at 2-years follow-up. ECGs were collected at discharge, 3-month and 2-year visits, and analyzed by an independent ECG core laboratory following the Minnesota code. All new QWMI were further reviewed by a blinded independent cardiologist to identify a potential clinical correlate by reviewing clinical information. Of 15,968 participants, ECG information was complete in 14,829 (92.9%) at 2 years. A new QWMI was confirmed in 186 (1.16%) patients. Transient new Q-waves were observed in 28.5% (53 of 186) of them during the follow-up. The majority of new QWMI (78%, 146 of 186) were classified as silent MI due to the absence of a clinical correlate. Silent MI accounted for 22.1% (146 of 660) of all MI events. The prevalence of silent MI did not differ significantly between treatment strategies (experimental vs reference: 0.88% vs 0.98%, p = 0.5027). Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) quantitative flow ratio (QFR) on clinical outcomes in patients with de novo 3-vessel disease (3VD) treated with contemporary PCI., Background: The clinical impact of post-PCI QFR in patients treated with state-of-the-art PCI for de novo 3VD is undetermined., Methods: All vessels treated in the SYNTAX (SYNergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with TAXus and cardiac surgery) II trial were retrospectively screened and analyzed for post-PCI QFR. The primary endpoint of this substudy was vessel-oriented composite endpoint (VOCE) at 2 years, defined as the composite of vessel-related cardiac death, vessel-related myocardial infarction, and target vessel revascularization. The receiver-operating characteristic curve was used to calculate the optimal cutoff value of post-PCI QFR for predicting 2-year VOCE. All the analyzable vessels were stratified on the basis of the optimal cutoff value., Results: A total of 968 vessels treated with PCI were screened. Post-PCI QFR was analyzable in 771 (79.6%) vessels. A total of 52 (6.7%) VOCEs occurred at 2 years. The mean value of post-PCI QFR was 0.91 ± 0.07. The diagnostic performance of post-PCI QFR to predict 2-year VOCE was moderate (area under the curve: 0.702; 95% confidence interval: 0.633 to 0.772), with the optimal cutoff value of post-PCI QFR for predicting 2-year VOCE 0.91 (sensitivity 0.652, specificity 0.635). The incidence of 2-year VOCE in the vessels with post-PCI QFR <0.91 (n = 284) was significantly higher compared with vessels with post-PCI QFR ≥0.91 (n = 487) (12.0% vs. 3.7%; hazard ratio: 3.37; 95% confidence interval: 1.91 to 5.97; p < 0.001)., Conclusions: A higher post-PCI QFR value is associated with improved vessel-related clinical outcomes in state-of-the art PCI practice for de novo 3VD. Achieving a post-PCI QFR value ≥0.91 in all treated vessels should be a target when treating de novo 3VD. Aims: To evaluate the impact of an experimental strategy [23-month ticagrelor monotherapy following 1-month dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)] vs. a reference regimen (12-month aspirin monotherapy following 12-month DAPT) after complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)., Methods and Results: In the present post hoc analysis of the Global Leaders trial, the primary endpoint [composite of all-cause death or new Q-wave myocardial infarction (MI)] at 2 years was assessed in patients with complex PCI, which includes at least one of the following characteristics: multivessel PCI, ≥3 stents implanted, ≥3 lesions treated, bifurcation PCI with ≥2 stents, or total stent length >60 mm. In addition, patient-oriented composite endpoint (POCE) (composite of all-cause death, any stroke, any MI, or any revascularization) and net adverse clinical events (NACE) [composite of POCE or Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) Type 3 or 5 bleeding] were explored. Among 15 450 patients included in this analysis, 4570 who underwent complex PCI had a higher risk of ischaemic and bleeding events. In patients with complex PCI, the experimental strategy significantly reduced risks of the primary endpoint [hazard ratio (HR): 0.64, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.48-0.85] and POCE (HR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.69-0.93), but not in those with non-complex PCI (Pinteraction = 0.015 and 0.017, respectively). The risk of BARC Type 3 or 5 bleeding was comparable (HR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.67-1.40), resulting in a significant risk reduction in NACE (HR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.69-0.92; Pinteraction = 0.011)., Conclusion: Ticagrelor monotherapy following 1-month DAPT could provide a net clinical benefit for patients with complex PCI. We report a case of systemic chemotherapy after biliary stent placement for obstructive jaundice due to hepatic portal lymph node metastasis after colorectal cancer surgery. The patient was a 40s woman. Laparoscopic anterior resection for rectosigmoidRS cancer was performed. The pathological diagnosis was T3N0M0PUL0R0, pStage Ⅱ according to the 8th edition of colorectal cancer handling regulations. Because multiple liver metastases were observed 8 months after the surgery, partial resection of the posterior region of the liver was performed. Multiple lung metastases were observed 1 year after hepatectomy, but she wantedto undergo follow-up observation. Jaundice was observed 1 year after the diagnosis of lung metastasis, and obstructive jaundice due to hepatic portal lymph node metastasis was diagnosed. Endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage(ERBD)was performed, and a bile duct stent was placed. After improving jaundice, 12 courses of mFOLFOX6 plus cetuximab therapy were performed. Currently, because of the exacerbation of lung metastasis, FOLFIRI plus bevacizumab therapy is being administered. Systemic chemotherapy containing a molecular-targeted drug is being administered in our case, but complications relatedto the biliary stent have not been observed. There are few reports on similar cases, andfollow - up observation with careful attention to long-term safety is necessary.

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) that perform more efficiently under artificial indoor lighting conditions than they do under sunlight are attracting growing interest as they can potentially serve as ambient energy harvesters for powering low-power electronics and portable devices for the Internet of Things. Herein, solution-processed small-molecule OPVs are demonstrated to exhibit high power conversion efficiencies exceeding 16% under white LED illumination, delivering high output power densities of up to 12.4 and 65.3 μW cm -2 at 200 and 1000 lx, respectively. Increasing the open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of OPVs is a critical factor for achieving higher indoor photovoltaic performance. Toward real applications, this small-molecule OPV system is adopted to fabricate six series-connected modules with an active area of ∼10 cm 2 that are capable of generating a high output power surpassing 100 μW and a high V oc of over 4.2 V even under dimly lit indoor conditions of 200 lx. These results indicate that OPVs are promising as indoor electric power sources for self-sustainable electronic devices.

Electron photoemission and ponderomotive acceleration by surface enhanced optical fields is considered as a plausible mechanism of terahertz radiation from metallic nanostructures under ultrafast laser excitation. To verify this mechanism, we studied experimentally terahertz emission from an array of gold nanorods illuminated by intense (~10-100 GW/cm 2 ) femtosecond pulses of different central wavelengths (600, 720, 800, and 1500 nm). We found for the first time that the order of the dependence of the terahertz fluence on the laser intensity is, unexpectedly, almost the same (~4.5-4.8) for 720, 800, and 1500 nm and somewhat higher (~6.6) for 600 nm. The results are explained by tunneling currents driven by plasmonically enhanced laser field. In particular, the pump-intensity dependence of the terahertz fluence is more consistent with terahertz emission from the sub-cycle bursts of the tunneling current rather than with the ponderomotive mechanism.

Background: Little is known about serial changes in lumen and device dimensions after bioresorbable scaffold implantation in a growing animal model., Methods and results: ABSORB (n=14) or bare metal stents (ICROS amg [Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA, USA], Winsen-Luhe, Germany; n=15) were implanted in the coronary arteries of domestic swine (a hybrid of Finnish-Norwegian Landrace swine) weighing 30-35 kg. Angiography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed immediately after implantation and repeated at 7 days, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the index procedure. One month after implantation, mean lumen area decreased relative to baseline in both groups (relative area change from baseline, -41.4±15.6% for ABSORB vs. -20.9±18.6% for ICROS) while mean device area decreased only in the ABSORB group (relative area change: -11.1±9.4% vs. +0.14±7.95%, respectively). At 12 months, mean lumen area increased relative to baseline in both groups (relative area change from baseline, +55.6±22.4% vs. +32.3±83.6%, respectively) in accordance with the swine growth weighing up to 260-300 kg. Mean device area in the ICROS group remained stable whereas that in the ABSORB group began to increase between 3 and 6 months along with the vessel growth (relative area change: +107.8±25.7% vs. +0.14±7.95%)., Conclusions: In the growing porcine model, ABSORB was associated with greater extent of recoil 1 month after implantation compared with ICROS but demonstrated substantial adaptability to vessel growth in late phase.

Narrow-band-gap small molecules with π-extended backbones are promising donor materials for solution-processed bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a series of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) photovoltaic small molecules incorporating thienylene-vinylene-thienylene (TVT) as a central D unit and alkyl-substituted rhodanine or 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)rhodanine as terminal A units are designed and synthesized. Their physical properties including photoabsorption, electronic energy levels, hole mobility, and morphological characteristics are systematically investigated. Using solvent vapor annealing (SVA), the morphologies of the BHJ photoactive layers composed of these small-molecule donors and a [6,6]-phenyl-C 71 -butyric acid methyl ester (PC 71 BM) acceptor can be properly modulated. As a result of increased crystallinity of the donors and desired phase segregation between the donors and PC 71 BM upon rapid SVA treatment, the photovoltaic performances of the resultant OSC devices undergo drastic enhancement. The results reported here indicate that high-efficiency small-molecule OSCs can be achieved through rational design of the TVT-based molecular framework and optimization of the nanoscale phase-segregated morphology via proper SVA treatment.

Aims: Coronary angioscopy (CAS) is a robust imaging methodology for evaluation of vascular healing response after stenting. However, the procedure requires a guiding catheter with a diameter of more than 6 Fr, which is rather invasive at follow-up angiography. Recently, coronary angioscopes of a smaller diameter have been able to pass through a 4 Fr guiding catheter. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of slender CAS observation using a 4 Fr guiding catheter., Methods and Results: Thirty-three consecutive patients who underwent follow-up angiography were evaluated. Following usual angiography via the radial artery, the stent segment was observed by non-occlusive CAS through a 4 Fr guiding catheter. Low molecular weight dextran-L (4 mL/sec) was flushed from a guiding catheter to replace coronary blood. The success rate, anatomical or procedural factors related to the success, and incidence of adverse events were examined. The success rate was 84.8% (n=28/33). The luminal diameter at the orifice of the target vessel was larger in the successful than in the failed group (4.03±0.61 mm vs. 3.39±0.61 mm, respectively; p=0.009). The presence of deep engagement of the guiding catheter into the target vessel was a key factor for sufficient observation (100% in the successful group vs. 0% in the failed group; p<0.0001). No adverse events, such as dissection or acute coronary syndrome, were reported., Conclusions: The new method of CAS through a 4 Fr guiding catheter demonstrated high feasibility and safety. Despite current advances in human colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment, few radical therapies are effective for the late stages of CRC. To overcome this clinical challenge, tumor xenograft mouse models using long-established human carcinoma cell lines and many transgenic mouse models with tumors have been developed as preclinical models. They partially mimic the features of human carcinomas, but often fail to recapitulate the key aspects of human malignancies including invasion and metastasis. Thus, alternative models that better represent the malignant progression in human CRC have long been awaited. We herein show generation of patient-derived tumor xenografts (PDXs) by subcutaneous implantation of small CRC fragments surgically dissected from a patient. The colon PDXs develop and histopathologically resemble the CRC in the patient. However, few spontaneous micrometastases are detectable in conventional cross-sections of affected distant organs in the PDX model. To facilitate the detection of metastatic dissemination into distant organs, we extracted the tumor organoid cells from the colon PDXs in culture and infected them with GFP lentivirus prior to injection into highly immunodeficient NOD/Shi-scid IL2Rγ null (NOG) mice. Orthotopically injected PDX-derived CRC organoid cells consistently form primary tumors positive for GFP in recipient mice. Moreover, spontaneously developing micrometastatic colonies expressing GFP are notably detected in the lungs of these mice by fluorescence microscopy. Moreover, intrasplenic injection of CRC organoids frequently produces hepatic colonization. Taken together, these findings indicate GFP-labelled PDX-derived CRC organoid cells to be visually detectable during a multistep process termed the invasion-metastasis cascade. The described protocols include the establishment of PDXs of human CRC and 3D culture of the corresponding CRC organoid cells transduced by GFP lentiviral particles.

Solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs) based on narrow-band gap small molecules hold great promise as next-generation energy-converting devices. In this paper, we focus on a family of A-π-D-π-A-type small molecules, namely, BDT- nT-ID ( n = 1-4) oligomers, consisting of benzo[1,2- b:4,5- b']dithiophene (BDT) as the central electron-donating (D) core, 1,3-indandione (ID) as the terminal electron-accepting (A) units, and two regioregular oligo(3-hexylthiophene)s ( nT) with different numbers of thiophene rings as the π-bridging units, and elucidate their structure-property-function relationships. The effects of the length of the π-bridging nT units on the optical absorption, thermal behavior, morphology, hole mobility, and OSC performance were systematically investigated. All oligomers exhibited broad and intense visible photoabsorption in the 400-700 nm range. The photovoltaic performances of bulk heterojunction OSCs based on BDT- nT-IDs as donors and a fullerene derivative as an acceptor were studied. Among these oligomers, BDT-2T-ID, incorporating bithiophene as the π-bridging units, showed better photovoltaic performance with a maximum power conversion efficiency as high as 6.9% under AM 1.5G illumination without using solvent additives or postdeposition treatments. These favorable properties originated from the well-developed interpenetrating network morphology of BDT-2T-ID, with larger domain sizes in the photoactive layer. Even though all oligomers have the same A-D-A main backbone, structural modulation of the π-bridging nT length was found to impact their self-organization and nanostructure formation in the solid state, as well as the corresponding OSC device performance.

Annealing of block copolymers has become a tool of great importance for the reconfiguration of nanoparticles. Here, we present the experimental results of annealing block copolymer nanoparticles and a theoretical model to describe the morphological transformation of ellipsoids with striped lamellae into onionlike spheres. A good correspondence between the experimental findings and predictions of the model was observed. The model based on finding the steepest direction of descent of an appropriate free energy leads to a set of Cahn-Hilliard equations that correctly describe the dynamical transformation of striped ellipsoids into onionlike spheres and reverse onionlike particles, regardless of the nature of the annealing process. This universality makes it possible to describe a variety of experimental conditions involving nanoparticles underlying a heating process. A notable advantage of the proposed approach is that it enables selective control of the interaction between the confined block copolymer and the surrounding medium. This feature endows the model with a great versatility to enable the reproduction of several combined effects of surfactants in diverse conditions, including cases with reverse affinities for the block copolymer segments. A phase diagram to describe a variety of morphologies is presented. We employ the relationship between the temperature-dependent Flory-Huggins parameter and the width of the interfaces to account for changes in temperature due to the heating process. Simulation results correctly show how the transformation evolves as the temperature increases. This increment in temperature corresponds to progressively smaller values of the interfacial width. Deep-blue emitters that can harvest both singlet and triplet excited states to give high electron-to-photon conversion efficiencies are highly desired for applications in full-color displays and white lighting devices based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules based on highly twisted donor-acceptor (D-A) configurations are promising emitting dopants for the construction of efficient deep-blue OLEDs. In this study, a simple and versatile D-A system combining acridan-based donors and pyrimidine-based acceptors has been developed as a new platform for high-efficiency deep-blue TADF emitters. The designed pre-twisted acridan-pyrimidine D-A molecules exhibit small singlet-triplet energy splitting and high photoluminescence quantum yields, functioning as efficient deep-blue TADF emitters. The OLEDs utilizing these TADF emitters display bright blue electroluminescence with external quantum efficiencies of up to 20.4%, maximum current efficiencies of 41.7 cd A -1 , maximum power efficiencies of 37.2 lm W -1 , and color coordinates of (0.16, 0.23). The design strategy featuring such acridan-pyrimidine D-A motifs can offer great prospects for further developing high-performance deep-blue TADF emitters and TADF-OLEDs.

Colorectal cancer is a prevalent malignancy worldwide, and investigations are required to elucidate the underlying carcinogenic mechanisms. Amongst these mechanisms, de novo carcinogenesis and the adenoma to carcinoma sequence, are the most understood. Metastasis of colorectal cancer to the liver often results in fatality, therefore, it is important for any associated risk factors to be identified. Regarding the treatment of the disease, it is important to manage not only the primary colorectal tumor, but also the liver metastases. Previously, through gene variation analysis, chromosomal loss has been indicated to serve an important role in liver metastasis. Such analysis may aid in the prediction of liver metastasis risk, alongside individual responses to treatment, thus improving the management of colorectal cancer. In the present study, we aimed to clarify a cause of the liver metastasis of colorectal cancer using comparative genomic hybridization analysis. A total of 116 frozen samples were analyzed from patients with advanced colorectal cancer that underwent surgery from 2004 to 2011. The present study analyzed mutations within tumor suppressor genes non-metastatic gene 23 (NM23), deleted in colorectal carcinoma (DCC) and deleted in pancreatic carcinoma, locus 4 (DPC4), which are located on chromosomes 17 and 18 and have all been reported to affect liver metastasis of colorectal cancer. The association between chromosomal abnormalities (duplication and deletion) and liver metastasis of colorectal cancer was evaluated using comparative genomic hybridization. Cluster analysis indicated that the group of patients lacking the long arm of chromosome 17 demonstrated the highest rate of liver metastasis. No significant association was observed between the frequency of liver metastases for synchronous and heterochronous colorectal cancer cases and gene variation (P=0.206). However, when these liver metastasis cases were divided into the synchronous and heterochronous types, the ratio of each was significantly different between gene variation groups, classified by the existence of the 17q deletion (P=0.023). These results indicate that the deletion of 17q may act as a predictive marker of liver metastasis in postoperative states.

Background: We investigated the influence of geographical predisposition on the spatial distribution and composition of coronary plaques., Methods: Thirty coronary arteries were evaluated. A total of 1441 cross-sections were collected from intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and radio-frequency signal-based virtual histology (VH-IVUS) imaging. To exclude complex geographical effects of side branches and to localise the plaque distribution, we analysed only eccentric plaques in non-branching regions. The spatial distribution of eccentric plaques in the coronary artery was classified into myocardial, lateral, and epicardial regions. The composition of eccentric plaques was analysed using VH-IVUS., Results: The plaque was concentric in 723 sections (50.2%) and eccentric in 718 (49.9%). Eccentric plaques were more frequently distributed towards the myocardial side than towards the epicardial side (46.7 ± 7.5% vs. 12.5 ± 4.2%, p = 0.003). No significant difference was observed between the myocardial and lateral sides (46.7 ± 7.5% vs. 20.8 ± 5.0%) or between the lateral and epicardial sides. Eccentric thin-capped fibroatheromas were more frequently distributed towards the myocardial side than towards the lateral side (p = 0.024) or epicardial side (p = 0.005)., Conclusion: Geographical predisposition is associated with distribution, tissue characterisation, and vulnerability of plaques in non-branching coronary arteries.

Although an association has been reported between the microvascular complications of diabetic patients and their poor prognosis after cardiovascular events related to advanced atherosclerosis, it is not clear whether there is a relation between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and the severity of plaque vulnerability. Fifty-seven diabetic patients with coronary artery disease, classified as non-DR (n = 42) or DR (n = 15), underwent angioscopic observation of at least 1 entire coronary artery. The number of yellow plaques (NYP) through the observed coronary artery was counted and their color grades, defined as 1 (light yellow), 2 (yellow), or 3 (intense yellow), were evaluated. The NYP per vessel and the maximum yellow grade were determined. The association between the presence of DR and incidences of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was analyzed during the follow-up period (mean 7.1 ± 3.3 years; range, 0.83 to 11.75 years). Mean NYP per vessel and maximum yellow grade were significantly greater in DR than in non-DR patients (2.08 ± 1.01 vs 1.26 ± 0.77, p = 0.002, and 2.40 ± 0.74 vs 1.90 ± 0.82, p = 0.044, respectively). The cumulative incidences of ACS were higher in the DR group (p = 0.004), and the age-adjusted hazard ratio for ACS was 6.943 (95% CI 1.267 to 38.054; p = 0.026) for DR compared with non-DR patients. Our findings indicate that coronary atherosclerosis and plaque vulnerability are more severe in patients with DR. Solution-processable star-shaped and linear π-conjugated oligomers consisting of an electron-donating tetrathienoanthracene (TTA) core and electron-accepting diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) arms, namely, TTA-DPP4 and TTA-DPP2, were designed and synthesized. Based on density functional theory calculations, the star-shaped TTA-DPP4 has a larger oscillator strength than the linear TTA-DPP2, and consequently, better photoabsorption property over a wide range of visible wavelengths. The photovoltaic properties of organic solar cells based on TTA-DPP4 and TTA-DPP2 with a fullerene derivative were evaluated by varying the thickness of the bulk heterojunction active layer. As a result of the enhanced visible absorption properties of the star-shaped π-conjugated structure, better photovoltaic performances were obtained with relatively thin active layers (40-60 nm).

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) π-conjugated polymers are developed for solution-processed TADF-OLEDs. Benzophenone-based alternating donor-acceptor structures contribute to the small ∆EST , enabling efficient exciton-harvesting through TADF. The main aim of the present work is to precisely understand the sole effect of nitrogen doping on the electrochemical performance of porous carbon materials. To achieve this objective, the whole surface of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) was coated with a thin layer of carbon (about 0.4 nm) with and without N-doping by using acetonitrile and acetylene chemical vapor deposition, respectively. The resulting N-doped and nondoped carbon-coated silica samples have mesopore structures identical to those in the original SBA-15, and they are practically the same in terms of not only the pore size and pore structure but also the particle size distribution and particle morphology, with the exception of N-doping, which makes them unique model materials to extract the sole effect of nitrogen on the performances of electrochemical capacitors and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction. Moreover, the outstanding features of the carbon-coated silica samples allow even a quantitative understanding of the pseudocapacitance induced by nitrogen functionalities on the carbon surface in an acidic aqueous electrolyte.
