The volume models that have been used in Finland for the last 40 years, while generally well thought-out, exhibit an illogical behaviour for small trees. In recent studies, tree stem form was observed to have changed in time and also involve spatial variation attributable to environmental factors. It is yet unclear how the stem taper has actually changed. To overcome these problems, we fitted a completely new set of volume and taper curve models and examined whether this change is attributable to the changes in management and environmental factors rather than to measurement errors in the previously used datasets. For the latter, we added a dataset into the analysis, which was smaller but of higher quality due to the destructive nature of the stem taper measurements. We aim at (1) developing a new non-linear variable form factor volume function that works with trees of all sizes, (2) improving the description of the variation of the stem form in time and space by including temperature sum and soil type as predictors, (3) understanding the changes in the stem form by fitting new taper curve models and (4) improving the statistical properties of the predictions by using mixed model techniques and by addressing the effect of parameter uncertainty. To assess the impact of renewing the models, we (5) predicted the mean volume and its confidence interval with each model for forest inventory data at country level. The results show that the tree stem form has a spatial trend that can be described with the temperature sum. Moreover, the changes in stem form also have a spatial trend, with largest changes in Lapland. The difference is mostly observable in the lowest part of the stem, and it is especially large in the largest pines. We conclude that environmental variables can help to improve national stem taper functions in countries with pronounced environmental gradients.

Reporting the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the LULUCF sector in the GHG inventory requires sound methods for estimating both the inputs and outputs of carbon (C) in managed ecosystems. Soil CO2 balance of forests consists of the CO2 released from decomposing soil organic matter (SOM) and the C entering the soil through aboveground and belowground plant litter input. Peatlands drained for forestry release soil C as CO2 because the drainage deepens the oxic peat layer prone to SOM decomposition. IPCC Guidelines provide default CO2 emission factors for different climatic zones and the defaults or locally adapted static emission factors are commonly in use in GHG inventory reporting for drained peatlands. In this paper, we describe a new dynamic method to estimate the CO2 balance of drained peatland forest soils in Finland. Contrary to static emission factors, the annual CO2 release from soil is in our method estimated using empirical regression models driven by time series of tree basal area (BA), derived from the national forest inventories in Finland, time series of air temperature and the drained peatland forest site type. Aboveground and belowground litter input is also estimated using empirical models with newly acquired turnover rates for tree fine roots and BA as a dynamic driver. All major components of litter input from ground vegetation and live, harvested and naturally died trees are included. Our method produces an increasing trend of emissions from 1.4 to 7.9 Mt CO2 for drained peatland forest soils in Finland for the period 1990–2021, with a statistically significant difference between years 1990 and 2021. Across the period 1990–2021, annual emissions are on average 3.4 Mt and −0.3 Mt in southern and northern parts of Finland, respectively. When combined with data of the CO2 sink created by trees, it appears that in 2021 drained peatland forest ecosystems were a source of 2.3 Mt CO2 in southern Finland and a sink of 2.5 Mt CO2 in northern Finland. We compare the emissions produced by the new method with those produced by the old GHGI method of Finland and discuss the strengths and vulnerabilities of our method in comparison to static emission factors.

Intense pressure on water resources has led to efforts to reuse reclaimed processing wastewater in the food industry. There are tight rules for water quality, but efficient separation technologies such as reverse osmosis possess good possibilities for water reuse. This study developed a membrane-based reuse water concept for wastewater from the candy industry emphasizing the pre-treatment stage in the concept to reduce fouling. The wastewater contained suspended solids, sugar compounds and the ingredients for candy gelation, which had a tendency to foul membranes, making pre-treatment essential for a successful concept. Cross-rotational ultrafiltration, which featured enhanced fouling prevention for membranes, functioned well for the removal of challenging substances. Conventional filtration technologies were impractical due to a low flux, even when the viscosity of the wastewater was reduced using surfactants. The wastewater had a high chemical oxygen demand, meaning that there was a strong fouling potential for reverse osmosis membranes, but also high osmotic pressure. A spiral wound reverse osmosis functioned well when the wastewater was pre-treated, and it produced good quality water with respect to all the other studied parameters except the chemical oxygen demand. However, chemical oxygen demand rejection was 99% since the concentration in the wastewater was originally very high. HIGHLIGHTS A membrane-based concept was successfully applied for water reuse from wastewater.; Cross-rotational ultrafiltration technology enabled chemical-free pre-treatment for wastewater.; Spiral wound reverse osmosis achieved good filtration performance with developed pre-treatment.; Techno-economic evaluation is available for the functional concept.

Recycled bed sand from a power plant’s fluidized bed reactor was used to remove humic substances (HSs) from surface water samples. The performance of sand samples screened into different size fractions together with unscreened sand was evaluated in removing HSs by performing shaking and column experiments, and by monitoring the quality of the treated water samples in terms of pH, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and colour. At the beginning of the column experiments, the used sand fractions removed HSs with over 80% efficiency. However, as the experiments proceeded, the removal efficiency rapidly decreased, reaching a steady state during which a column filled with small-particle-size screened sand removed 20–25% of the COD and colour at a 2.2 kg/h flow speed, and 25–35% of the COD and 30–35% of the colour at a slow 0.5 kg/h flow speed. With unscreened sand, the corresponding COD and colour removal efficiencies were 10–20% (COD) and 10–18% (colour) for fast column experiments, and 22–27% for COD and 25–30% for colour during slow column experiments. Elemental analysis revealed that recycled fluidized bed sand contained several cationic compounds known to form complexes with HSs. Especially calcium together with aluminium and iron are potential candidates for removing colour and COD from the water samples. Highlights: Recycled fluidized bed sand could be used as a low-cost adsorbent material for removing HSs from surface water samples Especially the COD and colour of the water samples could be reduced by the sand treatments Fluidized bed sand contained several cationic compounds forming complexes with HSs No significant amounts of heavy metals were leached during the sand treatments.

Background The local pivotal method (LPM) utilizing auxiliary data in sample selection has recently been proposed as a sampling method for national forest inventories (NFIs). Its performance compared to simple random sampling (SRS) and LPM with geographical coordinates has produced promising results in simulation studies. In this simulation study we compared all these sampling methods to systematic sampling. The LPM samples were selected solely using the coordinates (LPMxy) or, in addition to that, auxiliary remote sensing-based forest variables (RS variables). We utilized field measurement data (NFI-field) and Multi-Source NFI (MS-NFI) maps as target data, and independent MS-NFI maps as auxiliary data. The designs were compared using relative efficiency (RE); a ratio of mean squared errors of the reference sampling design against the studied design. Applying a method in NFI also requires a proven estimator for the variance. Therefore, three different variance estimators were evaluated against the empirical variance of replications: 1) an estimator corresponding to SRS; 2) a Grafström-Schelin estimator repurposed for LPM; and 3) a Matérn estimator applied in the Finnish NFI for systematic sampling design. Results The LPMxy was nearly comparable with the systematic design for the most target variables. The REs of the LPM designs utilizing auxiliary data compared to the systematic design varied between 0.74–1.18, according to the studied target variable. The SRS estimator for variance was expectedly the most biased and conservative estimator. Similarly, the Grafström-Schelin estimator gave overestimates in the case of LPMxy. When the RS variables were utilized as auxiliary data, the Grafström-Schelin estimates tended to underestimate the empirical variance. In systematic sampling the Matérn and Grafström-Schelin estimators performed for practical purposes equally. Conclusions LPM optimized for a specific variable tended to be more efficient than systematic sampling, but all of the considered LPM designs were less efficient than the systematic sampling design for some target variables. The Grafström-Schelin estimator could be used as such with LPMxy or instead of the Matérn estimator in systematic sampling. Further studies of the variance estimators are needed if other auxiliary variables are to be used in LPM.

This study focused on tree mortality in spruce-dominated stands managed using the single-tree selection method in southern Finland. Together with regeneration and tree growth, mortality is one of the basic elements of the stand structure and dynamics in selection stands. The study was based on data acquired from a set of 20 permanent experimental plots monitored with repeated measurements for 20 years. The average mortality in the number of stems (N) was 4.45 trees ha−1a−1, in basal area (G) 0.07 m2 ha−1a−1, and in stemwood volume (V) 0.56 m3 ha−1a−1. In relative terms it was 0.50% of N, 0.30% of G and 0.27% of V, respectively. Wind and snow were the most common causes of mortality, while deaths by biotic causes (mammals, insects, pathogens) were extremely rare. Some 6–10% of the total loss in the number of stems and volume was attributable to the loss or removal of trees that sustained serious damage in harvesting. Most of the mortality occurred in the smallest diameter classes of up to 20 cm. Such a high mortality among small trees can have an adverse influence on the sustainability of selection structures if not successfully checked in harvesting and management.

Natal dispersal affects the gene flow, distribution, dynamics and social structure of a population. In many solitary mammals, dispersal is often male-biased, while females may remain philopatric. For the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), dispersal distances vary greatly and may be explained by sex or by habitat characteristics, such as fragmentation. Juvenile lynx habitat selection during dispersal has not been studied before, but resident lynx select heterogeneous forested habitats and avoid human settlements and infrastructure through distinct temporal activity patterns. We studied movement patterns and habitat selection during the dispersal of 22 Eurasian lynx (7 females, 15 males) in Finland. We found no differences between the sexes in the onset age, duration, distance, route or route linearity. Dispersal took place mostly during the evening and at night but also during the day. Of the four most used habitats, the mixed forests and transitional woodlands were used more frequently than would be expected according to their availability, and conifer forests and fields less than would be expected. Housing and other human infrastructure, including roads, were the least frequently used categories. There was a highly significant difference between the used and available habitats in general. The lynx selected the habitat more carefully during the day than during the night.

National forest inventories (NFIs) are designed to provide accurate information on forest resources at the national and regional levels, but there is also a demand for such information at smaller spatial scales. Auxiliary data such as satellite imagery have been used to facilitate small-area estimation. The commonly used method, k-nearest neighbour (k-NN), provides a model-based estimator for small areas, but a design-unbiased estimator for the mean square error is not available. Post-stratification (PS) is an alternative approach to using auxiliary information that allows for design-based variance estimation. In a case study using real inventory data of the Finnish NFI, we applied this method to the municipality level to explore the lower limit to the area for which the key forest parameters, forest area and growing stock volumes, can be estimated with sufficient precision. For PS, we employed exogenous forest resources maps based on the previous NFI round. In the municipalities of the two study provinces, the relative standard errors of total volume estimates ranged from 2.3% to 26.9%. They were smaller than 10% for municipalities with an area of 390 km2 or larger, corresponding to approximately 100 or more sample plots on forestland. We also demonstrated the usefulness of design-unbiased variance estimation in showing discrepancies between design-based PS and model-based k-NN estimates.

Since the 1990s, forest resource maps and forest variable estimates for small areas have been produced by combining national forest inventory (NFI) field plot data, optical satellite images and numerical map data. A non-parametric $k$-NN method has frequently been employed. In Finland, such multi-source NFI (MS-NFI) forest variable estimates for municipalities have been produced eight times. A relatively large variation has been observed between subsequent estimates. In this study, a large-scale evaluation of small-area estimates from an MS-NFI conducted in 2013 was carried out in comparison with pure NFI field data-based estimates and error estimates. The proportion of municipalities with significant differences was larger than expected, e.g. over 10% for the mean volume, which indicates systematic error in the small-area estimates. A multi-temporal data fusion combining MS-NFI estimators from three time points—2011, 2013 and 2015—was tested as a means to improve single time point MS-NFI estimates of the mean volumes of growing stock and of tree species groups. A generalized least squares (GLS) technique and unweighted averaging were tested. The improvement was small but consistent when validated against the NFI field data-based estimates for the municipalities. The unweighted averaging worked nearly as well as a GLS estimator.

Forecasting the impact of future global warming on biodiversity requires understanding how temperature limits the distribution of species. Here we rely on Liebig's Law of Minimum to estimate the effect of temperature on the maximum potential abundance that a species can attain at a certain location. We develop 95%-quantile regressions to model the influence of effective temperature sum on the maximum potential abundance of 25 common understory plant species of Finland, along 868 nationwide plots sampled in 1985. Fifteen of these species showed a significant response to temperature sum that was consistent in temperatura-only models and in all-predictors models, which also included cumulative precipitation, soil texture, soil fertility, tree species and stand maturity as predictors. For species with significant and consistent responses to temperature, we forecasted potential shifts in abundance for the period 2041-2070 under the IPCC A1B emission scenario using temperatura-only models. We predict major potential changes in abundance and average northward distribution shifts of 6-8 km y r-1. Our results emphasize inter-specific differences in the impact of global warming on the understory layer of boreal forests. Species in all functional groups from dwarf shrubs, herbs and grasses to bryophytes and lichens showed significant responses to temperature, while temperature did not limit the abundance of 10 species. We discuss the interest of modelling the 'maximum potential abundance' to deal with the uncertainty in the predictions of realized abundances associated to the effect of environmental factors not accounted for and to dispersal limitations of species, among others. The pipe model approach was compared with foliage biomass models by using the cross-sectional area at the tree crown base for predicting foliage biomass of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). We evaluated the impacts of site type, fertilization, and climate on the relationship between foliage biomass and cross-sectional area at the tree crown base, referred as to the pipe model ratio. Our hypotheses were that (i) the pipe model approach is a more precise and accurate method for foliage prediction than the traditional biomass models and (ii) the pipe model ratio for foliage does not explicitly depend on any single environmental driver. Data used here consisted of felled trees from Finnish and Swedish biomass studies. These data were analyzed by linear mixed models with different covariates, and the uncertainties of different modelling approaches were evaluated. The pipe model outperformed other models for Scots pine but not for Norway spruce. Results showed larger pipe model ratios for Scots pine in herb-rich forests compared with those of trees in subxeric heath forest. Results from fertilized trees indicated that the addition of nitrogen temporarily increased foliage biomass.

Continuous cover forestry (CCF) has been promoted as an environmentally sustainable option for drained peatlands. The CCF management has been challenged due to potentially lower tree growth compared to tradi-tional even-aged management, especially with suppressed trees that are released during a selection harvesting under CCF management. Our objective was to quantify the time lag of stem diameter growth response of suppressed Norway spruce trees (Picea abies Karst.) after a selection harvesting compared to that of dominant trees. We also tested if the carbon assimilation of the trees increased immediately after selection harvesting. We used radial increment cores from suppressed Norway spruce trees to estimate the impact of selection harvesting on the diameter growth and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE). We measured carbon isotope composition (delta 13C) of wood, to quantify how the reduced competition between trees altered iWUE and its components, the photosynthetic rate (A) and sto-matal conductance (g). The study was conducted in the Lettosuo experimental site on fertile forestry drained peatland area in southern Finland. Approximately 70 % of the initial stand area (18.5 ha) was harvested according to CCF principles by applying selection harvesting, and the rest of the area was divided to intact control area and to clear-cut area. In the study site, by selection harvest, trees were removed from multiple age classes, but especially mature trees individually or in a small groups were taken away to maintain uneven-aged structure of the forest. All the target trees grew in the similar competitive position before selection harvesting. Our results show that there was a delay with the diameter growth of the suppressed trees to selection har-vesting, whereas the most significant growth-enhancing effect occurred three-four years after selection har-vesting. In contrast to the delay in the increment, the photosynthetic rate relative to stomatal conductance increased immediately after selection harvesting, as shown by the instant 2.5 parts per thousand increase in delta 13C to a post-harvest level. Our results show that carbon uptake increased immediately for suppressed Norway spruce trees after selection harvesting, but the harvest did not induce a clear increase in stem diameter growth during the first years after the harvest.

Water reuse from wastewater treatment plants can significantly reduce freshwater demand. Additionally municipal sewage and some industrial wastewaters could be used as sources of nutrients and carbon more effectively than they are used today. Biological treatments have attracted the most attention in wastewater purification, whereas, so far, only a little attention has been paid to the physico-chemical technologies. These technologies could, however, have great potential to recover nutrients when purifying wastewater. In this study, the main emphasis was to study the possibilities to utilize existing physico-chemical unit operations for wastewater purification and nutrients as well as carbon recovery. Unit operations were selected so that they could produce exploitable circular economy products from wastewaters and be assembled in a mobile container for carrying out recovery anywhere that is suitable. The results showed that in a mobile container, solids could be successfully separated from the studied wastewaters by flocculation-assisted solid/liquid separation and then processed into hydrochar by hydrothermal carbonization. Phosphate was precipitated using lime milk as calcium phosphate, and ammonium nitrogen was captured from the wastewater using membrane contactor technology resulting in ammonium sulphate for fertilizer use. Additionally, reverse osmosis retained residual impurities well, producing good quality water for reuse. The techno-economic feasibility seems promising.

Membrane-based concept comprising microfiltration and nanofiltration pre-treatments, reverse osmosis pre-concentration, and membrane distillation used for final concentration was applied for producing purified and concentrated recycled deicing fluid. Additionally, a techno-economic assessment was conducted to determine the economic viability of the recycling concept. By a straightforward membrane-based concept, ∼95% of solid and colloidal impurities together with certain deicing fluid additives such as colorants and surfactants could be efficiently removed (removal efficiencies of ∼90% and ∼93%, respectively), and resulting purified deicing fluid could be concentrated to ∼60 wt% glycol solution, enabling its recycling in deicing operations. Preliminary techno-economic assessment indicated that a membrane-based concept can be used as an economically viable alternative for recycling the spent deicing fluid at airports. The techno-economic case study at an airport consuming 4,000 tonnes of deicing fluid during 6 months annually showed the concept to be economically feasible when the price of purchased propylene glycol is over 1,000 EUR/tonne. In addition to the purchase price of the propylene glycol, the most important cost factors were labor cost and the annual consumption of deicing fluid. Integrating the membrane concept with other operations at airport has potential to decrease the labor cost and further improve the economic feasibility of the concept. HIGHLIGHTS Membrane concept was successfully utilized for purification and concentration of spent deicing fluid.; By the applied membrane concept, a glycol solution having ∼60 wt% of glycol could be produced.; Utilized concept was able to remove over 90% of impurities.; TEA indicated the concept to be economically feasible.; Integrating the operation of the concept with other operations at airport can potentially decrease the labor cost.

Frequency distributions of tree diameters are a powerful tool for analyzing changes of tree populations in large areas. We analyzed the densities and mean volume estimates of trees in different size classes for the Finnish forests over the time-span of the National Forest Inventories (1921–2013). The results display a general increase in trees in all size classes, species group and geographical area, mainly after the 1970s. The densities of medium- and large-sized conifers showed large increases in the southern boreal subzone, spruces even more than pines. Small- to medium-sized pines have increased in the middle and northern boreal subzones. The shifts in growing stock are related to changing land use, resulting from the development of the society. The low quantities of both growing stock and large trees during the 1920s reflect a poor initial state of forests. Several land use forms of the former agriculture-based society were detrimental to forests, including slash and burn agriculture, cattle grazing and tar production. The pressure from alternative land use forms was stronger in southern Finland, where the population density (people per km2) is much higher. Between 1971 and 2013, the changes in size-class structure can be attributed mainly to intensified silviculture boosted by actions of the Finnish governments, including both legislation and financial support for management activities. Not only the development of growing stock has exceeded expectations, but the increase has also concentrated in the economically valuable trees in the large size classes.

An adequate supply of micronutrients is essential for balanced plant growth. In Africa, micronutrient constraints are known to restrict crop productivity and impair human welfare and health. We analyzed a total of 816 topsoil and 796 subsoil samples from Sub-Saharan Africa, to provide baseline information on their readily available Al, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn concentrations. This work builds on previous global micronutrient surveys. The studied soils were low in hot water-extractable B, acid ammonium acetate-EDTA-extractable micronutrients, and potentially harmful metals. In comparison with tentative critical level values, B, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Fe in a considerable number of samples seemed to be at a low level for crop production. Apart from Al, Mo, V, Pb, and Cr, readily available element concentrations were higher in topsoil than subsoil. Concentrations of harmful metals (Cd, Ni, Pb) and of Mn and Mo were enriched in cultivated soils in comparison with semi-natural sites. Among the 11 Reference Soil Groups represented in the study, Arenosols were discernible as poor in Cr, Cu, and Fe. Other significant differences in microelement concentrations between soil groups were found only for Ni and V.

Large and old trees have a vital role in preserving biodiversity in forest ecosystems. We used National Forest Inventory data from 1921 to 2013 for studying changes in densities (stems per ha) of large trees (diameter ≥40 cm) in Finland. In addition, densities of old trees (age ≥150 years) are reported from 1971 to 2013. We present results separately for the three subzones of the boreal biogeographical zone. Large trees have increased as much as 325%. The change has occurred mainly since the 1970s. On country level, old trees have become slightly less common (−4%) since the 1970s, although a decrease was actually observed only in the northern boreal subzone. The large majority of old trees in Finland are quite small in diameter, however. Trees that are both large and old show a notable increase from 1971 to 2013. During the 2010s, densities of large trees were higher in the southern boreal subzone than in the northern boreal subzone, but in the 1920s the opposite was true. Densities of old trees have been much higher in the northern boreal subzone. The observed densities of large trees are still considerably smaller than those observed in unmanaged old-growth forests in Scandinavia. High densities of large and/or old trees were observed in areas with restrictions on wood production emphasizing their role in maintaining biodiversity. The results reflect the destructive effects of former land use and the transition from dimensional cuttings to clear cuts and thinning from below after the 1940s. Proportionally larger changes were observed for southern Finland, where a higher human population density and the resulting more intensive land use had more severe detrimental effects on forests. As the densities of large trees and old trees have developed in a completely different manner in Finland, our results suggest that monitoring only the size distribution of trees will not sufficiently describe the role of old trees as constituents of biodiversity. Thereagainst, densities of large trees and large old trees developed in a similar manner.

Modern pulp mills can produce biofuels and value-added bio-products, such as lignin products. However, these bio-products are often present in solutions that are too dilute to be separated in a cost-efficient manner, and concentration by filtration is difficult due to their high fouling properties. In this research, challenging liquor, tannin-containing spruce bark extract, was concentrated by forward osmosis using soda ash from the soda recovery boiler as a draw solution. Soda ash, which consists of about 90% sodium sulphate, could be considered as a cost-free draw solution, since part of it needs to be discharged daily in order to prevent enrichment of potassium and chloride in the chemical circulation of pulp mills. Draw properties of soda ash solution were compared with the properties of pure salts, namely sodium sulphate and sodium chloride. Soda ash generated the same osmotic pressure and similar flux than sodium sulphate, but was a weaker draw solution compared with sodium chloride. When the draw solution concentration was 20% at 40°C, the flux was 16 and 13 LMH with soda ash and sodium sulphate, respectively. Using FO, water recovery over 80% could be reached, which is double compared with water recovery obtained by nanofiltration. However, the salt concentration of the feed solution was increased due to the reverse salt flux of the draw solution, which may hinder the further processing of tannin-containing spruce bark extract.

Forest management and land use can strongly alter the forest ecosystem with long-lasting legacy effects by shaping e.g. species composition and age structure in stand and landscape scales. These changes may lead to changes in the local disturbance regime. In addition, forest management may directly affect the dynamics of disturbance agents. Heterobasidion root rot is one of the most important diseases of conifers in the Northern hemisphere. The epidemiology of the fungus relies heavily on the availability of fresh wood material which the spores need to cause an infection. In managed forests, fresh stump surfaces provide massive amounts of perfect growth media. Once the fungus has infected a stand, the disease remains in there over tree generations slowly deteriorating the timber quality, killing trees and predisposing trees to subsequent disturbance agents such as wind. Thus, host availability in landscape scale, stand conditions and the management history all are assumed to play an important role in the epidemiology. The aim of this study was to analyze the drivers of current distribution of Heterobasidion root rot in Finland in order to understand the disease dynamics better and to manage the disease in the future. Specifically, we asked how important the legacies of different past management and land-use methods are. The National Forest Inventory (NFI) in Finland has recorded root rot observations since 1995 covering in total over 348 000 sample plots over four inventories. We combined that database with 20 different explanatory variables with a hypothetical relation to the biology and epidemiology of the fungus. The variables were categorized to three categories; (i) management legacies, (ii) landscape structure, and (iii) site conditions. Management legacies included for example the historical locations of sawmills and the share of forest pastures. Landscape structure combined structural characteristics, such as Norway spruce and old forest (120+ years) shares from different time periods. Site conditions were described with e.g. temperature sum and Shannon index for tree species richness. By using Boosted Regression Tree and Generalized Liner Models, we found that variables from all the three categories contributed to the presence of Heterobasidion root rot. The distance from an NFI plot to the nearest sawmill operating in 1910 (historical intensity of logging) and the distance to a waterway (timber rafting as main transportation methods) were shown to be one of the most important variables together with temperature sum and current Norway spruce share in landscape scale. This indicates that the management legacies, especially the past management intensity, has a significant effect on the epidemiology of Heterobasidion root rot.

The genetic structure of populations at the edge of species distribution is important for species adaptation to environmental changes. Small populations may experience non-random mating and differentiation due to genetic drift but larger populations, too, may have low effective size, e.g., due to the within-population structure. We studied spatial population structure of pedunculate oak, Quercus robur, at the northern edge of the species’ global distribution, where oak populations are experiencing rapid climatic and anthropogenic changes. Using 12 microsatellite markers, we analyzed genetic differentiation of seven small to medium size populations (census sizes 57–305 reproducing trees) and four populations for within-population genetic structures. Genetic differentiation among seven populations was low (Fst = 0.07). We found a strong spatial genetic structure in each of the four populations. Spatial autocorrelation was significant in all populations and its intensity (Sp) was higher than those reported in more southern oak populations. Significant genetic patchiness was revealed by Bayesian structuring and a high amount of spatially aggregated full and half sibs was detected by sibship reconstruction. Meta-analysis of isoenzyme and SSR data extracted from the (GD)2 database suggested northwards decreasing trend in the expected heterozygosity and an effective number of alleles, thus supporting the central-marginal hypothesis in oak populations. We suggest that the fragmented distribution and location of Finnish pedunculate oak populations at the species’ northern margin facilitate the formation of within-population genetic structures. Information on the existence of spatial genetic structures can help conservation managers to design gene conservation activities and to avoid too strong family structures in the sampling of seeds and cuttings for afforestation and tree improvement purposes.

The tree stem volume models of Norway spruce, Scots pine and silver and downy birch currently used in Finland are based on data collected during 1968–1972. These models include four different formulations of a volume model, with three different combinations of independent variables: 1) diameter at height of 1.3 m above ground (), 2) and tree height () and 3) , and upper diameter at height of 6 m (). In recent National Forest Inventories of Finland, a difference in the mean volume prediction between the models with and without the upper diameter as predictor has been observed. To analyze the causes of this difference, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) was used to acquire a large dataset in Finland during 2017–2018. Field-measured predictors and volumes predicted using spline functions fitted to the TLS data were used to re-calibrate the current volume models. The trunk form is different in these two datasets. The form height is larger in the new data for all diameter classes, which indicates that the tree trunks are more slender than they used to be. One probable reason for this change is the increase in stand densities, which is at least partly due to changed forest management. In models with both and as predictors, the volume is smaller a given class in the data new data than in the old data, and vice versa for the diameter classes. The aim of this study was to compare how logging residues of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) affect the dynamics of N and C cycling processes in forest soil after final felling. The study site was located in southeastern Finland. After clear-cutting, piles consisting of 40 kg m−2 of fresh logging residues of each tree species were established, together with a control plot as an additional treatment. Samples were taken from the organic layer and uppermost mineral soil at the beginning of the experiment and each spring and autumn in the two following years. Logging residues stimulated net N mineralization and net nitrification and increased both NH4- and NO3-N concentrations in the organic layer. Logging residues increased the soil pH, organic matter content (%) and C mineralization, whereas microbial biomass C and N decreased. No major, consistent differences were observed between the effects of the separate tree species, although there were tree-species-specific differences on the dynamics of soil processes. Logging residues of spruce, pine and birch all strongly accelerated the processes of soil N cycling soon after clear-cutting. This study provides new information for the discussion on the sustainability of logging residue distribution and harvesting in boreal forests.

The National Forest Inventory of Finland (NFI) produces national- and regional-level statistics for sustainability assessment and strategical-level decision making. So far, the regional-level statistics are based on a systematic sampling design with geographical stratification. Auxiliary information such as remote sensing is not used for design or estimation at the regional level, but it is used at the small-area level, i.e., for municipality-level results. To improve the cost efficiency of the NFI, possibilities for using auxiliary data in both the design and estimation are of interest. We assessed the improvements obtainable by using an interpreted satellite image — the multisource NFI result from a previous NFI — as auxiliary information in the design phase. The results show that even though the multisource NFI map is not very accurate, significant improvements in efficiency can be obtained by using either the local pivotal method (LPM) or stratification. LPM improves efficiency by matching the sample distribution to population distribution. These results encourage us to further investigate (i) what would be the improvement with more accurate auxiliary information, for example, laser scanning data, and (ii) how LPM fits in a real-life situation where part of the plots are permanent and it would be used to select only the temporary plots.

Information on carbon stocks and the rate of carbon accumulation is needed to harness the climate change mitigation potential of boreal forests. While previous studies have revealed general patterns and mechanisms for age-dependence of stand biomass, simple stand-level models that address the age-biomass relationship on average in managed boreal forests in different environmental conditions are largely missing. We developed models for the relationship between stand age and biomass by forest types on peatlands and mineral soils across climate zones in managed forests in Finland based on National Forest Inventory measurements from 1996 to 2018. In addition, we analyzed at which rate biomass accumulates when managed forest ages in different growth conditions. In northern Finland the maximum biomass change rate was one third, and the maximum biomass stock less than half of the corresponding values in sub-xeric heath forests on minerals soils in southern Finland. On drained peatlands the maximum biomass growth rate was approximately half, and on undrained peatlands one third of the maximum growth rate on mineral soils. On most fertile sites on mineral soils the maximum biomasses were three times larger than on the poorest sites. Correspondingly, the maximum biomass stock change rates were almost eight times faster on most fertile sites. In the example cases presented, the highest annual biomass change rates were achieved in young forests on average at the stand ages of 7–32 years, whereas the 95% of the maximum stock were reached on average in stands of 63–147 years. At the age of highest biomass growth rate stands contained 27–59% of the maximum biomass stocks. The developed models can be used in practical applications such as accounting of biogenic carbon in life-cycle assessments, mapping carbon, or creating simple predictions of biomass stock development in regions, or estimating the mitigation potential of afforestation and reforestation or estimating the magnitude of carbon offsets projects.

Hardwood organosolv lignin (OSL) and enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) from softwood were cationized by glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTAC) as new lignin starting materials for the reaction. The products were in detail characterized by 31P-NMR to elucidate the reactivity of different lignin functionalities in cationization with GTAC. For OSL, a high cationization level (degree of substitution 0.74) was reached leading to a water-soluble product. For EHL, low solubility and lower reactivity were observed, likely due to the high saccharide content. Further, lower reactivity of the guaiacyl type lignin present in softwood, compared to syringyl type lignin in hardwoods, which was shown to react efficiently during the derivatization of OSL, probably played a role. In parallel to cationization, an increase of carboxylic acids (from 0.03 up to 0.55 mmol/g) in the lignin was observed as an unexpected side reaction, possibly as a result of alkaline oxygen oxidation. The applicability of the cationized lignins was tested for water purification applications in three model systems which have only sparingly been studied with cationized lignins. GTAC-OSL and GTAC-EHL were found promising for sulfate removal, with sulfate sorption capacities of up to 54 mg/g. GTAC-OSL was also found suitable for promoting kaolin settling and to some extent for humic acid coagulation.

Internal concentration polarization (ICP) severely limits water flux performance in forward osmosis (FO). We investigated the use of ultrasound to mitigate ICP. Various parameters affecting the performance of the novel ultrasonically-assisted FO were studied, such as ultrasonic frequency and constant versus pulsed operation. With either deionized water or polyphenolic tannin solution as the feed and sodium sulphate as the draw solution, the water flux was nearly doubled for a thin film composite FO membrane upon the application of a 20 kHz ultrasound, with stronger enhancement achieved when the ultrasound was applied to the support layer of the membrane. High frequencies of 573 and 1136 kHz had much weaker effects. Pulsed application of ultrasound can significantly reduce the energy consumption of sonication. For the first time, the current study provides compelling evidence that ultrasonic vibrations applied to porous support structure of an FO membrane is highly effective in mitigating ICP.

Chemical, physical and biological technologies for removal of sulphate from mine tailings pond water (8 g SO42−/L) were investigated. Sulphate concentrations of approximately 1,400, 700, 350 and 20 mg/L were obtained using gypsum precipitation, and ettringite precipitation, biological sulphate reduction or reverse osmosis (RO) after gypsum pre-treatment, respectively. Gypsum precipitation can be widely utilized as a pre-treatment method, as was shown in this study. Clearly the lowest sulphate concentrations were obtained using RO. However, RO cannot be the only water purification technology, because the concentrate needs to be treated. There would be advantages using biological sulphate reduction, when elemental sulphur could be produced as a sellable end product. Reagent and energy costs for 200 m3/h tailings pond water feed based on laboratory studies and process modelling were 1.1, 3.1, 1.2 and 2.7 MEur/year for gypsum precipitation, ettringite precipitation, RO and biological treatment after gypsum precipitation, respectively. The most appropriate technology or combination of technologies should be selected for every industrial site case by case.

The Heterobasidion annosum species complex is a widely distributed group of fungal conifer pathogens causing root and butt rots. We studied the key processes of Heterobasidion epidemiology by compiling models that rely on biological processes. Models were included in the mechanistic model with stochastic elements, Hmodel, simulating the fungal dynamics in even-aged Norway spruce stands. The results from the modelling and stand-level simulations indicated that primary infections are affected by the stump size and spore deposition. In addition, we found that Heterobasidion dynamics at the scale of the stand are driven by several infections in large stumps, rather than by numerous infections in small stumps. We assessed the need for quantitative results in Heterobasidion biology, especially in the spread mechanisms, to support the development of complex mechanistic models.
