This study investigated the impact of hands-on participant team teaching (HPTT) on children’s basic handwriting skills. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to measure changes in accuracy, correct strokes, consistency, control, grip, independence, and neatness. Initial observations revealed a teaching approach that heavily relied on parental assistance, which raised concerns about the student’s proficiency in basic handwriting skills. This monadic experimental study used seven early childhood pupils at a San Jose City, Philippines public school. Three researchers immersed themselves in teaching the selected students using HPTT, after a pre-test followed by a series of interventions then ended with a post-test. Experts validated rubrics used for scoring the pre-test and post-test. Qualitative data were gathered using semi-structured interviews. The pre-test results indicated a substantial deficit in basic handwriting skills. However, following the implementation of HPTT, the mean post-test score substantially increased, underscoring the effectiveness of the team-teaching intervention. Another critical finding is that guidance and personalized support play a pivotal role. Students who receive consistent help, especially in managing strokes and grips, consistently improve their handwriting abilities. This study highlights the impact of structured interventions and personalized assistance in honing handwriting skills. This highlights the potential of HPTT as an effective teaching method for enhancing children’s basic handwriting skills. The study underscores the importance of innovative and interactive teaching strategies and calls for further research to explore these findings’ long-term effects and generalizability to diverse student populations and settings.

This paper sought to determine the impact of School heads' instructional supervision on Teachers' Job Satisfaction. The participants were the Elementary School Teachers in the City Schools Division of City of Malolos, Bulacan. The study made use of standardized instruments as the primary data gathering tool. To gather significant information, two different survey questionnaires were utilized to examine School Head's Instructional Supervision and the Teacher's Job Satisfaction. Regression analysis was used to determine the relationship that exists between variables. The result indicates that School Head's instructional supervision in terms of Designing various interventions is statistically significant with a p-value of 0.043, less than the significance level of 0.05 a while the three indicators (Classroom Observation, Portfolio Supervision, and Identifying Strengths and Limitations) are correlated with teachers' job satisfaction but not to a significant extent. The analysis of variance revealed an F-value of 3.761 with a p-value of 0.008 less than the significance alpha of 0.05. This means that all four predictor variables jointly impact teachers' job satisfaction, but the best predictor is designing various interventions.

In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) postmortem tissue and the SOD1 mouse model at mid-disease, death of hypoglossal motor neurons (XII MNs) is evident. These XII MNs innervate the intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles, and despite their importance in many oral and lingual motor behaviours that are affected by ALS (e.g., swallowing, speech, and respiratory functions), little is known about the timing and extent of tongue muscle denervation. Here in the well-characterised SOD1G93A (high-copy) mouse model, we evaluated XII MN numbers and intrinsic tongue muscle innervation using standard histopathological approaches, which included stereological evaluation of Nissl-stained brainstem, and the presynaptic and postsynaptic evaluation of neuromuscular junctions (NMJs), using synapsin, neurofilament, and α-bungarotoxin immunolabelling, at presymptomatic, onset, mid-disease, and endstage timepoints. We found that reduction in XII MN size at onset preceded reduced XII MN survival, while the denervation of tongue muscle did not appear until the endstage. Our study suggests that denervation-induced weakness may not be the most pertinent feature of orolingual deficits in ALS. Efforts to preserve oral and respiratory functions of XII MNs are incredibly important if we are to influence patient outcomes.

Little research exists on the specific ways that Indigenous Knowledge is integrated into institutions of higher education across the U.S.-affiliated islands of Micronesia. This research study highlights the existence of Palauan Knowledge within Palau Community College. An Indigenous paradigm (Wilson, 2003) is utilized to align with Palauan values of respect (omenguul), responsibility (ngerachel), care and compassion (klechubechub). Through interviews (chelededuch) with nine collaborators, in addition to field notes, observations, and archival documents, this study was guided by the following questions: How is Indigenous Knowledge incorporated within Palau Community College (PCC)? Secondly, how do stories from Indigenous teachers and Indigenous learning environments inform PCC? Findings from this study reveal experiences of separation from Palauan Knowledge and the actions some collaborators took to preserve Palauan Knowledge. Collaborators’ narratives highlight several instances where Palauan knowledge is honored within the college through visual and oral representations and with academic and community programming. Continuity of Palauan Knowledge through ongoing opportunities to sustain practices in and outside the college is explored in the final reflections of collaborators. They continue to challenge perspectives that Indigenous Knowledge is in the past and instead is evolving. Ultimately, this study lays a foundation for continued inquiry and reflection of the college to continue to interrogate the ways that Palau Community College elevates Indigenous Knowledge.

Abstract The unintentional consumption of fentanyl is a serious health risk for people who use illicit drugs. In an ongoing community-based study regarding polysubstance use among people who use opioids, we found that 17 of 58 (29%) of participants who did not endorse fentanyl use in the past thirty days tested positive for fentanyl during point-of-care urinalysis (UA). This paper describes the reactions and experiences of participants who were informed they had consumed fentanyl unintentionally, as well as how the research team handled the unanticipated occurrence of discordant results. Consistent with other recent studies, we found that people learning of unintentional fentanyl use expressed strong concerns about accidental overdose. It was common for participants to reflect on recent substance use experiences that were atypical and might have involved fentanyl, as well as to examine sources of recent drug purchases. While not all participants were surprised that they had unintentionally consumed fentanyl, all felt that learning their positive results was important due to risk of overdose. Research and medical staff have an opportunity to promote awareness of possible contamination by sharing and discussing UA test results with people who use drugs in non-judgmental manner. In addition to the widely promoted harm reduction strategy of testing drugs with fentanyl test strips, self-administered point-of-care UA, particularly after an unexpected reaction to using a drug, could provide useful information for people buying and using illicit drugs.

Purpose: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a common inborn error of metabolism diagnosed in the Philippines. A family may experience stress, anxiety, sorrow, or feelings of helplessness when a child is diagnosed to have a genetic disorder, which can lead to chronic care and disability. This study aims to explore the psychosocial issues experienced by Filipino parents with children having MSUD. Methods: This is a descriptive and qualitative study. One-to-one interviews using a semi-structured set of questions were done between the months of November 2015 to March 2016. A total of 12 parents were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used. Results: The diagnosis of MSUD in a child is, indeed, a stressful event for the family. Parents experienced fear, confusion, and hurt, among other emotions. Having a child with MSUD had a negative impact on their families, especially in terms of financial burden, dietary restriction, and marital conflicts leading to separation. However, some parents reported positive effects, such as increased confidence in one’s abilities to care for the affected child and closer relationships among family members. Conclusion: A diagnosis of MSUD on the child places considerable caregiver burden on the parents. Findings have important implications for genetic counselors.

Background: The shift to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns and heightened anxiety levels, especially among student nurses adapting to academic and clinical challenges. Objective: This study aimed to assess the anxiety levels of student nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic, examining gender and year-level differences and identifying contributing factors. Methods: A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, involving 305 student nurses from Levels 1 to 4, selected using proportionate stratified and systematic random sampling at a Philippine nursing school. Data were collected in March 2022 using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and a self-made questionnaire. This study used a questionnaire for quantitative research instruments and has also used a customized method such as an online survey for the study. This study was conducted to explore the different factors that affect students’ academic performance. This study states that the students' environment has excellent effects, enhancing or weakening their academic performance. There are various factors inside and outside school that contribute to the quality of academic performance of students, such as, Parenting Style, Characteristics of the Students, Level of Internet Effectiveness, Teachers Effectiveness, Lack of Motivation, and Students Career Choice are the factors that affect students’ academic performance.

Adolescents in the United States live amid high levels of concentrated poverty and increasing income inequality. Poverty is robustly linked to adolescents' mental health problems; however, less is known about how perceptions of their social status and exposure to local area income inequality relate to mental health. Participants consisted of a population-representative sample of over 2,100 adolescents (ages 10-16), 395 of whom completed a 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study. Participants' subjective social status (SSS) was assessed at the start of the EMA, and mental health symptoms were measured both at baseline for the entire sample and daily in the EMA sample. Adolescents' SSS tracked family, school, and neighborhood economic indicators (|r| ranging from .12 to .30), and associations did not differ by age, race, or gender. SSS was independently associated with mental health, with stronger associations among older (ages 14-16) versus younger (ages 10-13) adolescents. Adolescents with lower SSS reported higher psychological distress and inattention problems, as well as more conduct problems, in daily life. Those living in areas with higher income inequality reported significantly lower subjective social status, but this association was explained by family and neighborhood income. Findings illustrate that adolescents' SSS is correlated with both internalizing and externalizing mental health problems, and that by age 14 it becomes a unique predictor of mental health problems. This descriptive pre-experimental quantitative study employing pre-test and post-test approach aimed to address low reading comprehension levels among the 33 identified non-readers in Grade 9 students at Asuncion National High School through the Comp-Reading Initiative. Statistical tools are used to analyze the data obtained from the respondents. Pre-test and post-test results across four indicators showed significant improvements. Prior to the intervention, Positive Attitude Towards Reading had a mean score of 2.67 (Low) in the pre-test and 4.56 (Very High) in the post-test; Main Idea Identification and Question Answering improved from 2.52 (Low) to 4.37 (Very High); Vocabulary Understanding and Development rose from 2.90 (Moderate) to 4.55 (Very High); and Reading Fluency increased from 2.65 (Low) to 4.50 (Very High). These results indicate substantial enhancement in students' reading comprehension skills. Significant difference of the tests' scores shows the T-value of -20.949 and p-value of <.001 which indicates that the null hypothesis will be rejected, since the p-value is less than 0.05 level of significance. Indepth interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders provided further insights. Themes from the interviews included Pre-initiative Challenges, Varied Levels of Comprehension, and Identified Areas for Improvement regarding pre-intervention reading comprehension. Post-intervention, themes such as Improved Comprehension Skills, Evidence of Enhanced Reading Comprehension, and Overall Positive Shift in Comprehension Levels emerged. Stakeholder perspectives highlighted themes like Diverse Interventions, Intended Outcomes and Goals, and Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration, demonstrating comprehensive support for the intervention's effectiveness. Overall, the study underscores the success of the Comp-Reading Initiative in significantly improving Grade 9 students' reading comprehension levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To describe the etiology, clinical profile, duration of lagophthalmos cases and thereby, framing a decision for the management based on the severity of Exposure keratitis (EK), Facial palsy (FP) with each etiology and to describe the outcome of the management options. Methods: The method was a prospective review of 120 lagophthalmos cases treated at a single tertiary center from January 2018 to January 2019. The main outcome measures were analysing the association between age, etiology, duration and management of lagophthalmos. Results: Of the 120 patients studied, paralytic etiology was noted in 86 and eyelid etiology in 34 patients. The percentage of various lagophthalmos etiology documented were Bell's palsy (35.83%), lagophthalmos in ICU patients (15%), traumatic facial palsy(FP) (10.80%), stroke associated FP (6.67%), infection associated FP (6.67%), iatrogenic FP, cicatricial lagophthalmos (5%), lagophthalmos post eyelid surgeries (5%), neoplastic FP(3.33%), congenital FP (1.67%), proptosis induced lagophthalmos (1.67%), floppy eyelid syndrome induced lagophthalmos (0.83%) and lid coloboma associated lagophthalmos (0.83%). A statistically significant correlation was noted between exposure keratitis and age, with an increased prevalence age advances. The management showed significant variation with individual etiology, with some etiologies unquestionably requiring surgical management. Surgical management is crucial as the duration of lagophthalmos increases more than 6 weeks, EK involving pupillary axis and poor FP recovery. Conclusion: This study concludes that the conservative management was sufficient in all cases when the duration is less than 1 week, Exposure keratitis not involving the pupillary axis (EK< Grade II) and FP with good functional recovery ( FP < Grade III). The predominant causes being Bell's palsy, lagophthalmos in ICU patients and vascular FP. Whereas, cases with poor functional recovery of facial palsy(FP) and permanent eyelid deformation require definitive surgical management like Traumatic FP & cicatricial lagophthalmos.

Adolescents are spending an unprecedented amount of time using digital technologies (especially mobile technologies), and there are concerns that adolescents' constant connectivity is associated with poor mental health, particularly among at-risk adolescents. Participants included 151 adolescents at risk for mental health problems (Mage  = 13.1) who completed a baseline assessment, 30-day ecological momentary assessment, and 18 month follow-up assessment. Results from multilevel regression models showed that daily reports of both time spent using digital technologies and the number of text messages sent were associated with increased same-day attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms. Adolescents' reported digital technology usage and text messaging across the ecological momentary assessment (EMA) period was also associated with poorer self-regulation and increases in conduct problem symptoms between the baseline and follow-up assessments.

Potassium ions have widespread roles in cellular homeostasis and activation as a consequence of their large outward concentration gradient across the surface membrane and ability to rapidly move through K+-selective ion channels. In platelets, the predominant K+ channels include the voltage-gated K+ channel Kv1.3, and the intermediate conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel KCa3.1, also known as the Gardos channel. Inwardly rectifying potassium GIRK channels and KCa1.1 large conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels have also been reported in the platelet, although they remain to be demonstrated using electrophysiological techniques. Whole-cell patch clamp and fluorescent indicator measurements in the platelet or their precursor cell reveal that Kv1.3 sets the resting membrane potential and KCa3.1 can further hyperpolarize the cell during activation, thereby controlling Ca2+ influx. Kv1.3-/- mice exhibit an increased platelet count, which may result from an increased splenic megakaryocyte development and longer platelet lifespan. This review discusses the evidence in the literature that Kv1.3, KCa3.1. GIRK and KCa1.1 channels contribute to a number of platelet functional responses, particularly collagen-evoked adhesion, procoagulant activity and GPCR function. Putative roles for other K+ channels and known accessory proteins which to date have only been detected in transcriptomic or proteomic studies, are also discussed.

Online shopping has accelerated during to the pandemic and an increase in online shopping cart abandonment (SCA) was also evident. The growth of online shopping is contributed by the rising middle class, high consumer spending, millennials, and a tech-savvy population which is valuable to the growth of e-commerce. This study aimed to predict the factors that affect SCA during the COVID-19 Pandemic utilizing the SEM-RFC hybrid. Several factors such as self-efficacy, attribute conflicts, hesitation at checkout, emotional ambivalence, choice process satisfaction, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were analyzed simultaneously. This study integrated the cognition-affect-behavior paradigm with the Theory of Planned Behavior to provide a conceptual framework measured through an online survey questionnaire answered by 1015 valid responses collected by convenience sampling. Results showed that Attitude, Attribute Conflict, Self-Efficacy, and Emotional Ambivalence are the primary significant factors affecting SCA. Amidst the pandemic, consumers still value the ease of use, convenience and safety of the mobile online shopping applications that they have, which they do not positively experience at this time. The findings of this study may be applied and extended by researchers, online retailers, and businesses to understand consumer's abandonment intentions. Moreover, the results and framework of this study may be capitalized on by the business sector to create marketing strategies and develop business models for a sustainable online shopping business worldwide.

Abstract Magnesium is an essential element that is involved in critical metabolic pathways. A diet deficient in magnesium is associated with an increased risk of developing cancer. Few studies have reported whether a serum magnesium level below the reference range (RR) is associated with prognosis in patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Using a retrospective approach in DLBCL patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplant (AHSCT), we evaluated the association of hypomagnesemia with survival. Totally, 581 patients eligible for AHSCT with a serum magnesium level during the immediate pre-transplant period were identified and 14.1% (82/581) had hypomagnesemia. Hypomagnesemia was associated with an inferior event-free (EFS) and overall survival (OS) compared to patients with a serum magnesium level within RR; median EFS: 3.9 years (95% CI: 1.63–8.98 years) versus 6.29 years (95% CI: 4.73–8.95 years) with HR 1.63 (95% CI: 1.09–2.43, p = 0.017) for EFS, and median OS: 7.3 years (95% CI: 2.91—upper limit not estimable) versus 9.7 years (95% CI: 6.92–12.3 years) with HR 1.90 (95% CI: 1.22–2.96, p = 0.005) for OS months 0–12, respectively. These findings suggest a potentially actionable prognostic factor for patients with DLBCL undergoing AHSCT.
