1. Demystifying the use of Compression in Virtual Production

Abstract: Virtual Production (VP) technologies have continued to improve the flexibility of on-set filming and enhance the live concert experience. The core technology of VP relies on high-resolution, high-brightness LED panels to playback/render video content. There are a number of technical challenges to effective deployment e.g. image tile synchronisation across the panels, cross panel colour balancing and compensating for colour fluctuations due to changes in camera angles. Given the complexity and potential quality degradation, the industry prefers "pristine" or lossless compressed source material for displays, which requires significant storage and bandwidth. Modern lossy compression standards like AV1 or H.265 could maintain the same quality at significantly lower bitrates and resource demands. There is yet no agreed methodology for assessing the impact of these standards on quality when the VP scene is recorded in-camera. We present a methodology to assess this impact by comparing lossless and lossy compressed footage displayed through VP screens and recorded in-camera. We assess the quality impact of HAP/NotchLC/Daniel2 and AV1/HEVC/H.264 compression bitrates from 2 Mb/s to 2000 Mb/s with various GOP sizes. Several perceptual quality metrics are then used to automatically evaluate in-camera picture quality, referencing the original uncompressed source content through the LED wall. 5. Interaction with End-Users in Design and Technology Education: A Systematic Review

Abstract: This paper is a systematic literature review of works focused on user-centred design practices and their potential application in pedagogical contexts in design and technology (D&T) education. It is a response to the increasingly complex demand of allowing students to develop so-called 21st-century skills within a D&T curriculum, which is often constrained by time, resources, and policy restrictions. This review highlights a range of studies that have been completed in various countries and phases of education, which enabled students to develop empathy with end-users whilst designing specifically for (and in some cases with) them. A Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) model was used to extract works published concerning established inclusion criteria. The articles were analysed according to their relation to user-centred design in a formal education setting and categorised based on the focus of each study. NVIVO was used to code the included literature to establish themes and to support analysis. The literature highlights many advantages to students in engaging in user-centred practices, both contributing towards improved design outcomes as well as improved social and emotional skills. It presents a need to further explore user-centred design methodologies in schools, feasibly through the lens of 21st-century skill development.

Abstract: Group formation and coordination are fundamental characteristics of living systems, essential for performing tasks and ensuring survival. Interactions between individuals play a key role in group formation, and the impact of resource distributions is a vibrant area of research. Using active particles in a tuneable optical environment as a model system, we demonstrate that heterogeneous energy source distributions result in smaller, more stable groups with reduced individual exchange between clusters compared to homogeneous conditions. Reduced group sizes can be beneficial to optimise resources in heterogeneous environments and to control information flow within populations. Devoid of biological complications, our system provides insights into the importance of patchy landscapes in ecological dynamics and holds implications for refining swarm intelligence algorithms and enhancing crowd control techniques., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

7. Measuring the Robustness of Predictive Probability for Early Stopping in Experimental Design

Abstract: Physical experiments in the national security domain are often expensive and time-consuming. Test engineers must certify the compatibility of aircraft and their weapon systems before they can be deployed in the field, but the testing required is time consuming, expensive, and resource limited. Adopting Bayesian adaptive designs are a promising way to borrow from the successes seen in the clinical trials domain. The use of predictive probability (PP) to stop testing early and make faster decisions is particularly appealing given the aforementioned constraints. Given the high-consequence nature of the tests performed in the national security space, a strong understanding of new methods is required before being deployed. Although PP has been thoroughly studied for binary data, there is less work with continuous data, which often in reliability studies interested in certifying the specification limits of components. A simulation study evaluating the robustness of this approach indicate early stopping based on PP is reasonably robust to minor assumption violations, especially when only a few interim analyses are conducted. A post-hoc analysis exploring whether release requirements of a weapon system from an aircraft are within specification with desired reliability resulted in stopping the experiment early and saving 33% of the experimental runs.

Abstract: Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research (BER), and Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) programs organized and held the Artificial Intelligence for Earth System Predictability (AI4ESP) workshop series. From this workshop, a critical conclusion that the DOE BER and ASCR community came to is the requirement to develop a new paradigm for Earth system predictability focused on enabling artificial intelligence (AI) across the field, lab, modeling, and analysis activities, called ModEx. The BER's `Model-Experimentation', ModEx, is an iterative approach that enables process models to generate hypotheses. The developed hypotheses inform field and laboratory efforts to collect measurement and observation data, which are subsequently used to parameterize, drive, and test model (e.g., process-based) predictions. A total of 17 technical sessions were held in this AI4ESP workshop series. This paper discusses the topic of the `AI Architectures and Co-design' session and associated outcomes. The AI Architectures and Co-design session included two invited talks, two plenary discussion panels, and three breakout rooms that covered specific topics, including: (1) DOE HPC Systems, (2) Cloud HPC Systems, and (3) Edge computing and Internet of Things (IoT). We also provide forward-looking ideas and perspectives on potential research in this co-design area that can be achieved by synergies with the other 16 session topics. These ideas include topics such as: (1) reimagining co-design, (2) data acquisition to distribution, (3) heterogeneous HPC solutions for integration of AI/ML and other data analytics like uncertainty quantification with earth system modeling and simulation, and (4) AI-enabled sensor integration into earth system measurements and observations. Abstract: Optical tweezers are tools made of light that enable contactless pushing, trapping, and manipulation of objects, ranging from atoms to space light sails. Since the pioneering work by Arthur Ashkin in the 1970s, optical tweezers have evolved into sophisticated instruments and have been employed in a broad range of applications in the life sciences, physics, and engineering. These include accurate force and torque measurement at the femtonewton level, microrheology of complex fluids, single micro- and nano-particle spectroscopy, single-cell analysis, and statistical-physics experiments. This roadmap provides insights into current investigations involving optical forces and optical tweezers from their theoretical foundations to designs and setups. It also offers perspectives for applications to a wide range of research fields, from biophysics to space exploration.

13. The end of the middle : middle-class downward mobility in the contemporary autofiction novel

Abstract: The last two decades have seen the autofiction novel become a cultural hegemon in North American and European literature. While many scholars have argued that the form's popularity is purely the result of an aesthetic turn away from postmodernism towards new experiments with sincerity and the 'real', I instead argue that this aesthetic turn has economic determinants. Since the 1970s, the middle-classes of North America and Europe have seen their living standards eroded and have increasingly faced the same insecurities of temporary work and renting as the working-class. Autofiction is frequently used by authors such as Dave Eggers, Megan Boyle, Heike Geissler and Lauren Oyler to narrate their experiences of downward mobility. I argue that the inclusion of the onomastic author-protagonist as a volatile blend of real and fictional, textual and extratextual, stable and unstable expresses the cultural and economic volatilities that have attended the gradual erosion of the North American and European middle-class and the bourgeois values that undergird it. Autofiction captures in a range of formally inventive ways both the personal experience and impersonal economic structures associated with downward mobility. Scholars have argued that in the nineteenth century realism gave downwardly mobile writers a form in which the world came to seem more stable and solid. Today, I argue, this aesthetic role has largely fallen to autofiction. Its central focus being the inner world of the self rather than the outer world of tangible things, autofiction expresses a class that tends to understand downward mobility less overtly through the disappearance of a solid world of commodities and property but instead through the oscillations of "human capital", an ideological dominant during the neoliberal period. The promise of stability is found in the literary construction of an authentic image of selfhood, in ways that often register the social phenomenon of "self-branding". These rich portrayals of the author's self-image often substitute for sensuous descriptions of the outer world. Unlike literary forms such as naturalism that in many instances demonstrated the bourgeoisie's mastery over reality by mapping the world of objects in luscious detail, autofiction tends to withdraw from sensuous experience. To varying degrees, the fictional worlds that feature in this thesis are sparse, even minimalist, and certainly do not open out into the thick descriptions of reality readers have come to associate with bourgeois realism. This absence, I argue, displays a terminal point in the fortunes of the middle-class, whereby the tangible world of property can no longer be relied on to offer stability. Most writers of autofiction came of age when the aspirational promises of the bourgeois 'good life' were ubiquitous in popular culture, even as the economic prospects of the middle-class had entered decline, leaving a cleavage between expectations and lived reality. As this thesis shows, disappointment, regret and disorientation are among the most persistent affective experiences of the downwardly mobile. Autofiction's undecidable facticity, its tendency to drift between the real and the imaginary, lends itself to narratives that are very often about reality not turning out as expected. Contemporary autofiction is often a fiction of economic trauma, insecurity and immobility.

Abstract: Given the current trend of increasing size and complexity of machine learning architectures, it has become of critical importance to identify new approaches to improve the computational efficiency of model training. In this context, we address the advantages of floating-point over fixed-point representation, and present an in-depth study on the use of 8-bit floating-point number formats for activations, weights, and gradients for both training and inference. We explore the effect of different bit-widths for exponents and significands and different exponent biases. The experimental results demonstrate that a suitable choice of these low-precision formats enables faster training and reduced power consumption without any degradation in accuracy for a range of deep learning models for image classification and language processing.

Abstract: This work documents version two of the Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). E3SMv2 is a significant evolution from its predecessor E3SMv1, resulting in a model that is nearly twice as fast and with a simulated climate that is improved in many metrics. We describe the physical climate model in its lower horizontal resolution configuration consisting of 110 km atmosphere, 165 km land, 0.5° river routing model, and an ocean and sea ice with mesh spacing varying between 60 km in the mid-latitudes and 30 km at the equator and poles. The model performance is evaluated with Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Characterization of Klima simulations augmented with historical simulations as well as simulations to evaluate impacts of different forcing agents. The simulated climate has many realistic features of the climate system, with notable improvements in clouds and precipitation compared to E3SMv1. E3SMv1 suffered from an excessively high equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) of 5.3 K. In E3SMv2, ECS is reduced to 4.0 K which is now within the plausible range based on a recent World Climate Research Program assessment. However, a number of important biases remain including a weak Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, deficiencies in the characteristics and spectral distribution of tropical atmospheric variability, and a significant underestimation of the observed warming in the second half of the historical period. An analysis of single-forcing simulations indicates that correcting the historical temperature bias would require a substantial reduction in the magnitude of the aerosol-related forcing.

28. Towards implementation of quantum noise reduction schemes in 3rd generation gravitational wave detectors

Abstract: Since the initial detection of gravitational waves in 2015, a slow and steady stream of events has been recorded. The next step is to detect more and weaker sources, probing deeper into the universe. In order to do so, our interferometers must be pushed to even greater extremes, to suppress the noise that would otherwise obscure such faint signals. Quantum noise is perhaps the most fundamental source of noise in a laser interferometer. Arising from the inherent uncertainty in the amplitude and phase of any light source, it limits the sensitivity of all current and proposed future interferometers, especially at higher signal frequencies. The second generation detectors currently in use, such as Advanced LIGO and Virgo, are operating around the standard quantum limit---the maximum sensitivity that can be reached by employing classical techniques. For future upgrades and new detectors, advanced quantum techniques must be employed to further increase sensitivity. Advanced LIGO has already demonstrated its ability to surpass the standard quantum limit over a small range of frequencies by making use of squeezed states of light, and future improvements will increase the magnitude and frequency range of this sensitivity enhancement. In this thesis, I will detail my work on these quantum techniques, aimed particularly at the upcoming third generation of gravitational wave detectors. This covers a wide variety of topics: different arrangements of filter cavities for improved squeezing, an alternate detection scheme that reduces both quantum and more technical noises, a mechanism that operates via complex optomechanical interactions, and more. In each of these subjects, my role has largely been to perform validation of new ideas and techniques, and to investigate the effects of varying detector parameters on the proposed scheme. To this end, I have made extensive use of a numerical frequency domain interferometer simulation tool known as finesse. Widely used throughout the interferometer community, finesse allows the fast and accurate modelling of optical layouts. Certain advanced techniques, however, were beyond finesse's capabilities when I started my work. This thesis therefore also describes my contributions towards a full rewrite of this tool, called finesse 3. I performed a complete reimplementation of the quantum noise calculations in finesse 3, and added features necessary to model new and exciting ideas. I will explain the mathematics that finesse 3 uses to simulate interferometers, before finally giving a broader overview of its design, usage, and the great potential it has to allow investigation of ever more complex techniques for the foreseeable future.

29. Defining major surgical complications using administrative data in Ontario: a validation study

Abstract: Background: Although surgical complications are often included as an outcome of surgical research conducted using administrative data, little validation work has been performed. We sought to evaluate the diagnostic performance of an algorithm designed to capture major surgical complications using health administrative data. Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent high-risk elective general surgery at a single institution in Ontario, Canada, from Sept. 1, 2016, to Sept. 1, 2017. Patients were identified for inclusion using the local operative database. Medical records were reviewed by trained clinicians to abstract postoperative complications. Data were linked to administrative data holdings, and a series of code-based algorithms were applied to capture a composite indicator of major surgical complications. We used sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy to evaluate the performance of our administrative data algorithm, as compared with data abstracted from the institutional charting system. Results: The study included a total of 270 patients. According to the data from the chart audit, 55% of patients experienced at least 1 major surgical complication. Overall sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy for the composite outcome was 72%, 80%, 82%, 70% and 76%, respectively. Diagnostic performance was poor for several of the individual complications. Conclusion: Our results showed that administrative data holdings can be used to capture a composite indicator of major surgical complications with adequate sensitivity and specificity. Additional work is required to identify suitable algorithms for several specific complications. Abstract: BackgroundPatients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) complicated by an out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrest (OHCA) may vary widely in their probability of dying. Large variation in mortality may have implications for current national efforts to benchmark operator and hospital mortality rates for coronary angiography. We aimed to build a risk-adjustment model of in-hospital mortality among OHCA survivors with concurrent STEMI.MethodsWithin the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), we included adults with OHCA and STEMI who underwent emergent angiography within 2 hours of hospital arrival between January 2013 and December 2019. Using multivariable logistic regression to adjust for patient and cardiac arrest factors, we developed a risk-adjustment model for in-hospital mortality and examined variation in patients' predicted mortality.ResultsOf 2,999 patients (mean age 61.2 ± 12.0, 23.1% female, 64.6% white), 996 (33.2%) died during their hospitalization. The final risk-adjustment model included higher age (OR per 10-year increase, 1.50 [95% CI: 1.39-1.63]), unwitnessed OHCA (OR, 2.51 [1.99-3.16]), initial non-shockable rhythm [OR, 5.66 [4.52-7.13]), lack of sustained pulse for > 20 minutes (OR, 2.52 [1.88-3.36]), and longer resuscitation time (increased with each 10-minute interval) (c-statistic = 0.804 with excellent calibration). There was large variability in predicted mortality: median, 25.2%, inter-quartile-range: 14.0% to 47.8%, 10th-90th percentile: 8.2 % to 74.1%.ConclusionsIn a large national registry, we identified 5 key predictors for mortality in patients with STEMI and OHCA and found wide variability in mortality risk. Our findings suggest that current national benchmarking efforts for coronary angiography, which simply adjusts for the presence of OHCA, may not adequately capture patient case-mix severity.

Abstract: In order to treat the multiple time scales of ocean dynamics in an efficient manner, the baroclinic-barotropic splitting technique has been widely used for solving the primitive equations for ocean modeling. Based on the framework of strong stability-preserving Runge-Kutta approach, we propose two high-order multirate explicit time-stepping schemes (SSPRK2-SE and SSPRK3-SE) for the resulting split system in this paper. The proposed schemes allow for a large time step to be used for the three-dimensional baroclinic (slow) mode and a small time step for the two-dimensional barotropic (fast) mode, in which each of the two mode solves just need to satisfy their respective CFL conditions for numerical stability. Specifically, at each time step, the baroclinic velocity is first computed by advancing the baroclinic mode and fluid thickness of the system with the large time-step \textcolor{black}{and the assistance of some intermediate approximations of the baroctropic mode obtained by substepping with the small-time step}; then the barotropic velocity is corrected by using the small time step to re-advance the barotropic mode under an improved barotropic forcing produced by interpolation of the forcing terms from the preceding baroclinic mode solves; lastly, the fluid thickness is updated by coupling the baroclinic and barotropic velocities. Additionally, numerical inconsistencies on the discretized sea surface height caused by the mode splitting are relieved via a reconciliation process with carefully calculated flux deficits. Two benchmark tests from the "MPAS-Ocean" platform are carried out to numerically demonstrate the performance and parallel scalability of the proposed SSPRK-SE schemes.

Abstract: BackgroundHealth status outcomes are increasingly being promoted as measures of health care quality, given their importance to patients. In heart failure (HF), an American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force proposed using the proportion of patients with preserved health status as a quality measure but not as a performance measure because risk adjustment methods were not available.MethodsWe built risk adjustment models for alive with preserved health status and for preserved health status alone in a prospective registry of outpatients with HF with reduced ejection fraction across 146 US centers between December 2015 and October 2017. Preserved health status was defined as not having a ≥5-point decrease in the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire Overall Summary score at 1 year. Using only patient-level characteristics, hierarchical multivariable logistic regression models were developed for 1-year outcomes and validated using data from 1 to 2 years. We examined model calibration, discrimination, and variability in sites' unadjusted and adjusted rates.ResultsAmong 3932 participants (median age [interquartile range] 68 years [59-75], 29.7% female, 75.4% White), 2703 (68.7%) were alive with preserved health status, 902 (22.9%) were alive without preserved health status, and 327 (8.3%) had died by 1 year. The final risk adjustment model for alive with preserved health status included baseline Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire Overall Summary, age, race, employment status, annual income, body mass index, depression, atrial fibrillation, renal function, number of hospitalizations in the past 1 year, and duration of HF (optimism-corrected C statistic=0.62 with excellent calibration). Similar results were observed when deaths were ignored. The risk standardized proportion of patients alive with preserved health status across the 146 sites ranged from 62% at the 10th percentile to 75% at the 90th percentile. Variability across sites was modest and changed minimally with risk adjustment.ConclusionsThrough leveraging data from a large, outpatient, observational registry, we identified key factors to risk adjust sites' proportions of patients with preserved health status. These data lay the foundation for building quality measures that quantify treatment outcomes from patients' perspectives.

Abstract: Precision measurements using traditional heterodyne readout suffer a 3dB quantum noise penalty compared with homodyne readout. The extra noise is caused by the quantum fluctuations in the image vacuum. We propose a two-carrier gravitational-wave detector design that evades the 3dB quantum penalty of heterodyne readout. We further propose a new way of realising frequency-dependent squeezing utilising two-mode squeezing in our scheme. It naturally achieves more precise audio frequency signal measurements with radio frequency squeezing. In addition, the detector is compatible with other quantum nondemolition techniques.

Abstract: \textsc{Pykat} is a Python package which extends the popular optical interferometer modelling software \textsc{Finesse}. It provides a more modern and efficient user interface for conducting complex numerical simulations, as well as enabling the use of Python's extensive scientific software ecosystem. In this paper we highlight the relationship between \textsc{Pykat} and \textsc{Finesse}, how it is used, and provide an illustrative example of how it has helped to better understand the characteristics of the current generation of gravitational wave interferometers.

Abstract: The design of a complex instrument such as Einstein Telescope (ET) is based on a target sensitivity derived from an elaborate case for scientific exploration. At the same time it incorporates many trade-off decisions to maximise the scientific value by balancing the performance of the various subsystems against the cost of the installation and operation. In this paper we discuss the impact of a long signal recycling cavity (SRC) on the quantum noise performance. We show the reduction in sensitivity due to a long SRC for an ET high-frequency interferometer, provide details on possible compensations schemes and suggest a reduction of the SRC length. We also recall details of the trade-off between the length and optical losses for filter cavities, and show the strict requirements for an ET low-frequency interferometer. Finally, we present an alternative filter cavity design for an ET low-frequency interferometer making use of a coupled cavity, and discuss the advantages of the design in this context., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer that has remained clinically challenging to manage. Here we employ an RNAi-based in vivo functional genomics platform to determine epigenetic vulnerabilities across a panel of patient-derived PDAC models. Through this, we identify protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) as a critical dependency required for PDAC maintenance. Genetic and pharmacological studies validate the role of PRMT1 in maintaining PDAC growth. Mechanistically, using proteomic and transcriptomic analyses, we demonstrate that global inhibition of asymmetric arginine methylation impairs RNA metabolism, which includes RNA splicing, alternative polyadenylation, and transcription termination. This triggers a robust downregulation of multiple pathways involved in the DNA damage response, thereby promoting genomic instability and inhibiting tumor growth. Taken together, our data support PRMT1 as a compelling target in PDAC and informs a mechanism-based translational strategy for future therapeutic development.Statement of significancePDAC is a highly lethal cancer with limited therapeutic options. This study identified and characterized PRMT1-dependent regulation of RNA metabolism and coordination of key cellular processes required for PDAC tumor growth, defining a mechanism-based translational hypothesis for PRMT1 inhibitors.

Abstract: IntroductionEvaluation of health status benefits, cost-effectiveness, and value of new heart failure therapies is critical for supporting their use. The Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) measures patients' heart failure-specific health status but does not provide utilities needed for cost-effectiveness analyses. We mapped the KCCQ scores to EQ-5D scores so that estimates of societal-based utilities can be generated to support economic analyses.MethodsUsing data from two US cohort studies, we developed models for predicting EQ-5D utilities (3L and 5L versions) from the KCCQ (23- and 12-item versions). In addition to predicting scores directly, we considered predicting the five EQ-5D health state items and deriving utilities from the predicted responses, allowing different countries' health state valuations to be used. Model validation was performed internally via bootstrap and externally using data from two clinical trials. Model performance was assessed using R2, mean prediction error, mean absolute prediction error, and calibration of observed vs. predicted values.ResultsThe EQ-5D-3L models were developed from 1000 health status assessments in 547 patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), while the EQ-5D-5L model was developed from 3925 patients with HFrEF. For both versions, models predicting individual EQ-5D items performed as well as those predicting utilities directly. The selected models for the 3L had internally validated R2 of 48.4-50.5% and 33.7-45.6% on external validation. The 5L version had validated R2 of 57.7%.ConclusionMappings from the KCCQ to the EQ-5D can yield the estimates of societal-based utilities to support cost-effectiveness analyses when EQ-5D data are not available.
